Tropical cyclones (TCs) can cause severe wind and rain hazards. Unusual TC tracks and their extreme precipitation forecasts have become two difficult problems faced by conventional models of primitive equations. The case study in this paper finds that the numerical computation of the climatological component in conventional models restricts the prediction of unusual TC tracks. The climatological component should be a forcing quantity, not a predictor in the numerical integration of all models. Anomaly-based variable models can overcome the bottleneck of forecast time length or the one-week forecasting barrier, which is limited to less than one week for conventional models. The challenge in extreme precipitation forecasting is how to physically get the vertical velocity. The anomalous moisture stress modulus (AMSM), as an indicator of heavy rainfall presented in this paper, considers the two conditions associated with vertical velocity and anomalous specific humidity in the lower troposphere. The relation between the atmospheric entropy flow field and local rainfall is examined in terms of the theory of dissipative structures. In this paper, the entropy balance equation in a form suitable for describing the entropy budget of the Earth's atmosphere is derived starting from the Gibbs relation, and, as examples, the entropy flows of the two severe weather events associated with the development of an extratropical cyclone and a tropical storm are calculated, respectively. The results show that negative entropy flow (NEF) has a significant effect on the precipitation intensity and scope with an apparent matching of the NEF's pattern with the rainfall distribution revealed and, that the diagnosis of NEF is able to provide a good indicator for precipitation forecasting. Deep convection is a threat to many human activities, with a great impact on aviation safety. On 7 July 2017, a widespread torrential precipitation event (associated with a cut-off low at mid-levels) was registered in the vicinity of Madrid, causing serious flight disruptions. During this type of episode, accurate short-term forecasts are key to minimizing risks to aviation. The aim of this research is to improve early warning systems by obtaining the best WRF model setup. In this paper, the aforementioned event was simulated. Various model configurations were produced using four different physics parameterizations, 3-km and 1-km domain resolutions, and 0.25° and 1° initial condition resolutions. Simulations were validated using data from 17 rain gauge stations. Two validation indices are proposed, accounting for the temporal behaviour of the model. Results show significant differences between microphysics parameterizations. Validation of domain resolution shows that improvement from 3 to 1 km is negligible. Interestingly, the 0.25° resolution for initial conditions produced poor results compared with 1°. This may be linked to a timing error, because precipitation was simulated further east than observed. The current neighborhood probability (NP) method mainly considers the spatial displacement error in high-resolution precipitation forecasts, but the problem of the forecast time exceeding or lagging behind the observed field has not been properly solved. Therefore, a temporal factor was introduced into the NP method in this paper, and precipitation forecasts were evaluated in different spatial-temporal neighborhoods based on the improved NP method and fractions skill score (FSS), combined with the relative operating characteristic (ROC) curve. The results indicated that the forecasting accuracy of the ensemble forecast was higher than the control forecast. The neighborhood ensemble probability (NEP) and probability matched mean (PMM) methods were superior to the traditional ensemble mean (EM) method in forecasting heavy rainfall, which compensated for the limitations of the heavy rainfall forecasting ability of EM. For such squall line processes, a spatial scale of 15-45 km neighborhood radius could effectively rectify the displacement error of precipitation. There was a corresponding relationship between temporal scale and rainfall intensity in convective-scale precipitation forecast, so the temporal uncertainty of different levels of precipitation could be captured by different temporal scales. The spatial and temporal scales had interdependent influences on precipitation forecast effects, which could be affected by the intrinsic spatial-temporal scale of convective-scale weather systems. The improved NP method could simultaneously reflect the spatial and temporal uncertainties of convective-scale precipitation forecasts in high-resolution models, achieving a comprehensive assessment of spatial-temporal scale and providing probabilistic forecast results that match different levels of precipitation. Several types of non-precipitation echoes appear in radar images and disrupt the weather forecasting process. An anomalous propagation echo is an unwanted observation result similar to a precipitation echo. It occurs through radar-beam ducting because of the temperature, humidity distribution, and other complicated atmospheric conditions. Anomalous propagation echoes should be removed because they make weather forecasting difficult. In this paper, we suggest an ensemble classification method based on an artificial neural network and a clustering-based subset-selection method. This method allows us to implement an efficient classification method when a feature space has complicated distributions. By separating the input data into atomic and non-atomic clusters, each derived cluster will receive its own base classifier. In the experiments, we compared our method with a standalone artificial neural network classifier. The suggested ensemble classifier showed 84.14% performance, which was about 2% higher than that of the k-means clustering-based ensemble classifier and about 4% higher than the standalone artificial neural network classifier. This paper examines the spatial error structures of eight precipitation estimates derived from four different satellite retrieval algorithms including TRMM Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA), Climate Prediction Center morphing technique (CMORPH), Global Satellite Mapping of Precipitation (GSMaP) and Precipitation Estimation from Remotely Sensed Information using Artificial Neural Networks (PERSIANN). All the original satellite and bias-corrected products of each algorithm (3B42RTV7 and 3B42V7, CMORPH_RAW and CMORPH_CRT, GSMaP_MVK and GSMaP_Gauge, PERSIANN_RAW and PERSIANN_CDR) are evaluated against ground-based Asian Precipitation-Highly Resolved Observational Data Integration Towards Evaluation of Water Resources (APHRODITE) over Central Asia for the period of 2004 to 2006. The analyses show that all products except PERSIANN exhibit overestimation over Aral Sea and its surrounding areas. The bias-correction improves the quality of the original satellite TMPA products and GSMaP significantly but slightly in CMORPH and PERSIANN over Central Asia. 3B42RTV7 overestimates precipitation significantly with large Relative Bias (RB) (128.17%) while GSMaP_Gauge shows consistent high correlation coefficient (CC) (>0.8) but RB fluctuates between -57.95% and 112.63%. The PERSIANN_CDR outperforms other products in winter with the highest CC (0.67). Both the satellite-only and gauge adjusted products have particularly poor performance in detecting rainfall events in terms of lower POD (less than 65%), CSI (less than 45%) and relatively high FAR (more than 35%). Improving the quality of atmospheric precipitation measurements is crucial in the view of minimizing the uncertainty in weather forecasting, climate change impact assessment, water resource assessment and management, and drought and flood prediction. Remote sensing technology has considerably improved the spatio-temporal assessment of precipitation. Despite the advancement in the remote sensing technology, there is a need to investigate the robust approach towards integrating ground-based-measured and satellite-product precipitation to better understand the hydrologic process of any basin. Several data-merging methods have been proposed; however, the application of merged precipitation products for hydrological simulation has rarely been investigated. Thus, in this review, technical characteristics including basic assumptions, along with their procedures, are discussed. Moreover, the limitations of eight commonly used merging approaches, (1) Multiple Linear Regression, (2) Residual Inverse Distance Weighting, (3) Linearized Weighting, (4) Inverse Root-Mean-Square Error Weighting, (5) Optimal Interpolation, (6) Random-Forest-Based Merging Procedure, (7) Bayesian Model Averaging, and (8) the Kriging Method, and their advances with respect to hydrological simulation are discussed. The regional ensemble prediction system (REPS) of North China is currently under development at the Institute of Urban Meteorology, China Meteorological Administration, with initial condition perturbations provided by global ensemble dynamical downscaling. To improve the performance of the REPS, a comparison of two initial condition perturbation methods is conducted in this paper: (i) Breeding, which was specifically designed for the REPS, and (ii) Dynamical downscaling. Consecutive tests were implemented to evaluate the performances of both methods in the operational REPS environment. The perturbation characteristics were analyzed, and ensemble forecast verifications were conducted. Furthermore, a heavy precipitation case was investigated. The main conclusions are as follows: the Breeding perturbations were more powerful at small scales, while the downscaling perturbations were more powerful at large scales; the difference between the two perturbation types gradually decreased with the forecast lead time. The downscaling perturbation growth was more remarkable than that of the Breeding perturbations at short forecast lead times, while the perturbation magnitudes of both schemes were similar for long-range forecasts. However, the Breeding perturbations contained more abundant small-scale components than downscaling for the short-range forecasts. The ensemble forecast verification indicated a slightly better downscaling ensemble performance than that of the Breeding ensemble. A precipitation case study indicated that the Breeding ensemble performance was better than that of downscaling, particularly in terms of location and strength of the precipitation forecast. Lightning and deep convective precipitation have long been studied as closely linked variables, the former being viewed as a proxy, or estimator, of the latter. However, to date, no single methodology or algorithm exists for estimating lightning-derived precipitation in a gridded form. This paper, the third in a series, details the specific algorithm where convective rainfall was estimated with cloud-to-ground lightning occurrences from the U.S. National Lightning Detection Network (NLDN), for the North American Monsoon region. Specifically, the authors present the methodology employed in their previous studies to get this estimation, noise test, spatial and temporal neighbors and the algorithm of the Kalman filter for dynamically derived precipitation from lightning. Short-term high-resolution quantitative precipitation forecasting (QPF) is very important for flash-flood warning, navigation safety, and other hydrological applications. This paper proposes a subpixel-based QPF algorithm using a pyramid Lucas–Kanade optical flow technique (SPLK) for short-time rainfall forecast. The SPLK tracks the storm on the subpixel level by using the optical flow technique and then extrapolates the precipitation using a linear method through redistribution and interpolation. The SPLK compares with object-based and pixel-based nowcasting algorithms using eight thunderstorm events to assess its performance. The results suggest that the SPLK can perform better nowcasting of precipitation than the object-based and pixel-based algorithms with higher adequacy in tracking and predicting severe storms in 0–2 h lead-time forecasting. The accurate ground-based cloud classification is a challenging task and still under development. The most current methods are limited to only taking the cloud visual features into consideration, which is not robust to the environmental factors. In this paper, we present the novel joint fusion convolutional neural network (JFCNN) to integrate the multimodal information for ground-based cloud classification. To learn the heterogeneous features (visual features and multimodal features) from the ground-based cloud data, we designed the proposed JFCNN as a two-stream structure which contains the vision subnetwork and multimodal subnetwork. We also proposed a novel layer named joint fusion layer to jointly learn two kinds of cloud features under one framework. After training the proposed JFCNN, we extracted the visual and multimodal features from the two subnetworks and integrated them using a weighted strategy. The proposed JFCNN was validated on the multimodal ground-based cloud (MGC) dataset and achieved remarkable performance, demonstrating its effectiveness for ground-based cloud classification task. Considering recent weather events in Serbia (especially the floods in 2014), a need has arisen for research that would help in identifying extreme weather phenomena. Therefore, the aim of this paper is to determine the thresholds above which intense precipitation can be considered as extreme precipitation events in Serbia. In this study, we determined the frequency of precipitation occurring at an intensity above the threshold of an extreme phenomenon (1961–2015), as well as the frequency of precipitation occurring at or above the absolute daily maximum in the reference period (1961–1990). The study sample included daily rainfall observations from 28 stations from the national meteorological network in Serbia. Applying a decile method, all the stations recording precipitation above the threshold of dangerous phenomena on the same day are classified into the corresponding decile. The threshold value was determined as the average value of the extreme annual precipitation in the analyzed period. The cases that are due to the high prevalence listed in the last decile are considered extreme. The results showed that the critical number of observation points above which an event is considered extreme precipitation event is 6.21, and a warning of the danger could be ensured only in the case of neighboring stations in the network. The threshold of extreme precipitation events for the individual stations ranges up to 130 mm. Featured Application: A conceptual model of aerosol-cloud interaction is first built to explain the aerosol effect on Mei-Yu frontal precipitation, with possible application to reducing the significant uncertainties in weather and climate prediction. The Mei-Yu front is a significantly important summer precipitation system in eastern Asia. In recent years, anthropogenic air pollution over the Yangtze-Huaihe region of China has been aggravating continuously. A cloud-resolving model coupled with an idealized frontal model is used to investigate the response of aerosols on the Mei-Yu frontal precipitation. The results indicate that increasing droplet concentrations lead to significant precipitation enhancement with the current pollution levels in Mei-Yu frontal system. Under the polluted conditions, the enhanced cold-cloud process is of great importance. Moreover, with the "towing" of active cold-cloud process, cold-cloud and warm-cloud processes developed mutually. These account for the complicated and special microphysical mechanism for aerosol impacts on Mei-Yu frontal system. Furthermore, two types of "microphysical-dynamic positive feedback loop" caused by the interactions of various physical processes and effects (direct dynamic effect, frontogenesis effect, and vapor pump effect) can be found in the Mei-Yu precipitation, which in turn reinforce the microphysical processes. The combined effect is to increase Mei-Yu front precipitation. The interaction of microphysical processes and dynamic processes, and the positive feedback loops they create are the main physical mechanisms behind the significant impacts of aerosol on Mei-Yu frontal precipitation. Using the CMIP5 model outputs, a few characteristics of Indian Summer Monsoon (ISM) rainfall and Niño 3.4 temperature are analysed during June-July-August-September (JJAS). Focusing on specified regions around central-northeast India, some general characteristic features of ISM precipitation are studied, which are shown to be varying among models. The trend of decreasing rainfall in that region as noticed in observations suggests an inconsistency among models. The ENSO also shows variation, and its phasing indicates disagreement. Unlike other models, FGOALS-g2 is identified as not suggesting any trend in Niño 3.4 temperature and needs attention for model evaluation purposes. ISM and ENSO correlation in either historical or the RCP 8.5 scenario confirm a negative signature, agreeing with the usual ISM, ENSO connection. Precipitation over the globe shows a rising trend in an ensemble of CMIP5 model outputs for the RCP 8.5 scenario, though no consensus is reached for the Indian region. Precipitation time series around the Indian subcontinent vary widely among models. Analyses with various future scenarios indicate that the Indian subcontinent shows much larger uncertainty, in terms of precipitation, compared to that from the whole world. This study identifies a few areas where CMIP5 models are in agreement or disagreement with each other. Such an analysis could be useful for understanding various processes in CMIP5 models that involve ISM precipitation and can lead to improving the representation of processes in models. Multiple wind retrieval algorithms are performed to retrieve wind fields, based on which radar reflectivity is extrapolated to implement nowcasting. The frequently used nowcasting algorithm COTREC (continuity of tracking radar echo by correlation), based on the reflectivity and wind retrieval algorithm GVAD (gradient velocity azimuth display), based on radial velocity are used. The wind fields retrieved by the two methods are taken as motion vectors to give a 60-min forecast of radar reflectivity. Comparison analysis on precipitation events shows that GVAD can be used in operational nowcasting as COTREC performs and for stable precipitation duration, COTREC gives better nowcasting results than GVAD, while, for evolving precipitation duration, GVAD gives better nowcasting results than COTREC. This study applies Real-Time Recurrent Learning Neural Network (RTRLNN) and Adaptive Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) with novel heuristic techniques to develop an advanced prediction model of accumulated total inflow of a reservoir in order to solve the difficulties of future long lead-time highly varied uncertainty during typhoon attacks while using a real-time forecast. For promoting the temporal-spatial forecasted precision, the following original specialized heuristic inputs were coupled: observed-predicted inflow increase/decrease (OPIID) rate, total precipitation, and duration from current time to the time of maximum precipitation and direct runoff ending (DRE). This study also investigated the temporal-spatial forecasted error feature to assess the feasibility of the developed models, and analyzed the output sensitivity of both single and combined heuristic inputs to determine whether the heuristic model is susceptible to the impact of future forecasted uncertainty/errors. Validation results showed that the long lead-time--predicted accuracy and stability of the RTRLNN-based accumulated total inflow model are better than that of the ANFIS-based model because of the real-time recurrent deterministic routing mechanism of RTRLNN. Simulations show that the RTRLNN-based model with coupled heuristic inputs (RTRLNN-CHI, average error percentage (AEP)/average forecast lead-time (AFLT): 6.3%/49 h) can achieve better prediction than the model with non-heuristic inputs (AEP of RTRLNN-NHI and ANFIS-NHI: 15.2%/31.8%) because of the full consideration of real-time hydrological initial/boundary conditions. Besides, the RTRLNN-CHI model can promote the forecasted lead-time above 49 h with less than 10% of AEP which can overcome the previous forecasted limits of 6-h AFLT with above 20%-40% of AEP. We propose a weather prediction model in this article based on neural network and fuzzy inference system (NFIS-WPM), and then apply it to predict daily fuzzy precipitation given meteorological premises for testing. The model consists of two parts: the first part is the "fuzzy rule-based neural network", which simulates sequential relations among fuzzy sets using artificial neural network; and the second part is the "neural fuzzy inference system", which is based on the first part, but could learn new fuzzy rules from the previous ones according to the algorithm we proposed. NFIS-WPM (High Pro) and NFIS-WPM (Ave) are improved versions of this model. It is well known that the need for accurate weather prediction is apparent when considering the benefits. However, the excessive pursuit of accuracy in weather prediction makes some of the "accurate" prediction results meaningless and the numerical prediction model is often complex and time-consuming. By adapting this novel model to a precipitation prediction problem, we make the predicted outcomes of precipitation more accurate and the prediction methods simpler than by using the complex numerical forecasting model that would occupy large computation resources, be time-consuming and which has a low predictive accuracy rate. The South African Weather Service is mandated to issue warnings of hazardous weather events, including those related to heavy precipitation, in order to safeguard life and property. Flooding and flash flood events are common in South Africa. Frequent updates and real-time availability of precipitation data are crucial to support hydrometeorological warning services. Satellite rainfall estimation provides a very important data source for flash flood guidance systems as well as nowcasting of precipitation events for the data sparse regions of the African continent. Although low earth orbiting satellites with microwave instruments provide good quality rainfall estimates, their temporal and spatial resolution are not adequate for time-critical services. Precipitation estimation using geostationary satellites is less accurate, but provides excellent spatial coverage, is updated frequently and is available in real-time. This study compares different ways to use and combine satellite precipitation estimates and numerical weather prediction model fields over the South African domain in order to determine the optimal estimate of precipitation, which can also be applied in real-time to support flash flood guidance. Typhoon precipitation and intensity forecasting plays an important role in disaster prevention and mitigation in the typhoon landfall area. However, the issue of improving forecast accuracy is very challenging. In this study, the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model typhoon simulations on precipitation and central 10-m maximum wind speed (10-m wind) were improved using a systematic parameter optimization framework consisting of parameter screening and adaptive surrogate modeling-based optimization (ASMO) for screening sensitive parameters. Six of the 25 adjustable parameters from seven physics components of the WRF model were screened by the Multivariate Adaptive Regression Spline (MARS) parameter sensitivity analysis tool. Then the six parameters were optimized using the ASMO method, and after 178 runs, the 6-hourly precipitation, and 10-m wind simulations were finally improved by 6.83% and 13.64% respectively. The most significant improvements usually occurred with the maximum precipitation or the highest wind speed. Additional typhoon events from other years were simulated to validate that the WRF optimal parameters were reasonable. The results demonstrated that the improvements in 6-hourly precipitation and 10-m wind were 4.78% and 8.54% respectively. Overall, the ASMO optimization method is an effective and highly efficient way to improve typhoon precipitation and intensity simulation using a numerical weather prediction model. Mexico City constitutes one of the largest concentrations of population on the planet and is settled in a valley that, before the 16th century, had a lake system. The lakes were desiccated artificially, and currently, only small lakes remain. The impact of the lake system desiccation on precipitation was studied by performing numerical experiments: with the ancient lake system and without it. The experiments were carried out with the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model coupled with a lake model for two months, using identical initial and boundary conditions, where only the system and lake physics were changed. The mean daily accumulated precipitation reduced when the system was removed. Additionally, the hourly distribution of rainfall changed from a relatively small diurnal variability when there was a lake system to a larger variability with a peak in the afternoon when the system was removed. Extreme precipitation events became more intense in the simulations with lakes. When the lakes were removed, the diurnal temperature range increased, and the boundary layer height became more variable, with a higher daily maximum. Stratiform and convective rain types are associated with different cloud physical processes, vertical structures, thermodynamic influences and precipitation types. Distinguishing convective and stratiform systems is beneficial to meteorology research and weather forecasting. However, there is no clear boundary between stratiform and convective precipitation. In this study, a machine learning algorithm, K-nearest neighbor (KNN), is used to classify precipitation types. Six Doppler radar (WSR-98D/SA) data sets from Jiangsu, Guangzhou and Anhui Provinces in China were used as training and classification samples, and the 2A23 product of the Tropical Precipitation Measurement Mission (TRMM) was used to obtain the training labels and evaluate the classification performance. Classifying precipitation types using KNN requires three steps. First, features are selected from the radar data by comparing the range of each variable for different precipitation types. Second, the same unclassified samples are classified with different k values to choose the best-performing k. Finally, the unclassified samples are put into the KNN algorithm with the best k to classify precipitation types, and the classification performance is evaluated. Three types of cases, squall line, embedded convective and stratiform cases, are classified by KNN. The KNN method can accurately classify the location and area of stratiform and convective systems. For stratiform classifications, KNN has a 95% probability of detection, 8% false alarm rate, and 87% cumulative success index; for convective classifications, KNN yields a 78% probability of detection, a 13% false alarm rate, and a 69% cumulative success index. These results imply that KNN can correctly classify almost all stratiform precipitation and most convective precipitation types. Aerosol indirect effects on precipitation were investigated in this study using a Global/Regional Integrated Model system (GRIMs) linked with a chemistry package devised for reducing the heavy computational burden occurring in common atmosphere–chemistry coupling models. The chemistry package was based on the Goddard Chemistry Aerosol Radiation and Transport scheme of Weather Research and Forecasting with Chemistry (WRF-Chem), and five tracers that are relatively important for cloud condensation nuclei (CCN) formation were treated as prognostic variables. For coupling with the cloud physics processes in the GRIMs, the CCN number concentrations derived from the simplified chemistry package were utilized in the cumulus parameterization scheme (CPS) and the microphysics scheme (MPS). The simulated CCN number concentrations were higher than those used in original cloud physics schemes and, overall, the amount of incoming shortwave radiation reaching the ground was indirectly reduced by an increase in clouds owing to a high CCN. The amount of heavier precipitation increased over the tropics owing to the inclusion of enhanced riming effects under deep precipitating convection. The trend regarding the changes in non-convective precipitation was mixed depending on the atmospheric conditions. The increase in small-size cloud water owing to a suppressed autoconversion led to a reduction in precipitation. In this study, the China Hourly Merged Precipitation Analysis (CHMPA) data which combines the satellite-retrieved Climate Prediction Center Morphing (CMORPH) with the automatic weather station precipitation observations is firstly assimilated into the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model using the Four-Dimensional Variational (4DVar) method. The analyses and subsequent forecasts of heavy rainfall during Meiyu season occurred in July 2013 over eastern China is evaluated. Besides, the sensitivity of rainfall forecast skill of assimilating the CHMPA data to the rainfall error, the rainfall thinning distance, and the rainfall accumulation time within assimilation window are investigated in this study. Then, the impact of 4DVar data assimilation with and without CHMPA rainfall data is evaluated to show how the assimilation of CHMPA impacts the precipitation simulations. It is found that assimilation of the CHMPA data helps to produce a better short-range precipitation forecast in this study. The rainfall fields after assimilation of CHMPA is closer to observations in terms of quantity and pattern. However, the leading time of improved forecast is limited to about 18 hours. It is also found that CHMPA data assimilation produces stronger realistic moisture divergence, precipitabale water field and the vertical wind field in the forecasting fields, which eventually contributes to the improved forecast of heavy rainfall. This study can provide references for the assimilation of CHMPA data into the WRF model using 4DVar, which is valuable for limited-area numerical weather prediction and hydrological applications. Recent surface-water and flash floods have caused millions of pounds worth of damage in the UK. These events form rapidly and are difficult to predict due to their short-lived and localised nature. The interdisciplinary Flooding From Intense Rainfall (FFIR) programme investigated the feasibility of enhancing the integration of an end-to-end forecasting system for flash and surface-water floods to help increase the lead time for warnings for these events. Here we propose developments to the integration of an operational end-to-end forecasting system based on the findings of the FFIR programme. The suggested developments include methods to improve radar-derived rainfall rates and understanding of the uncertainty in the position of intense rainfall in weather forecasts; the addition of hydraulic modelling components; and novel education techniques to help lead to effective dissemination of flood warnings. We make recommendations for future advances such as research into the propagation of uncertainty throughout the forecast chain. We further propose the creation of closer bonds to the end users to allow for an improved, integrated, end-to-end forecasting system that is easily accessible for users and end users alike, and will ultimately help mitigate the impacts of flooding from intense rainfall by informed and timely action. This study investigated precipitation distribution patterns in association with atmospheric rivers (ARs). The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model was employed to simulate two strong atmospheric river events. The precipitation forecasts were highly sensitive to cloud microphysics parameterization schemes. Thus, radar observed and simulated Z H and Z D R were evaluated to provide information about the drop-size distribution (DSD). Four microphysics schemes (WSM-5, WSM-6, Thompson, and WDM-6) with nested simulations (3 km, 1 km, and 1/3 km) were conducted. One of the events mostly contained bright-band (BB) rainfall and lasted less than 24 h, while the other contained both BB and non-bright-band (NBB) rainfall, and lasted about 27 h. For each event, there was no clear improvement in the 1/3 km model, over the 1 km model. Overall, the WDM-6 microphysics scheme best represented the rainfall and the DSD. It appears that this scheme performed well, due to its relative simplicity in ice and mixed-phase microphysics, while providing double-moment predictions of warm rain microphysics (i.e., cloud and rain mixing ratio and number concentration). The other schemes tested either provided single-moment predictions of all classes or double-moment predictions of ice and rain (Thompson). Considering the shallow nature of precipitation in atmospheric rivers and the high-frequency of the orographic effect enhancing the warm rain process, these assumptions appear to be applicable over the southern San Francisco Bay Area. The aim of this study is to assess the sensitivity of convective precipitation modelled by the regional climate model MAR (Modèle Atmosphérique Régional) over 1987–2017 to four newly implemented convective schemes: the Bechtold scheme coming from the MESO-NH regional model and the Betts-Miller-Janjić, Kain-Fritsch and modified Tiedtke schemes coming from the WRF regional model. MAR version 3.9 is used here at a resolution of 10 km over a domain covering Belgium using the ERA-Interim reanalysis as forcing. The simulated precipitation is compared against SYNOP and E-OBS gridded precipitation data. Trends in total and convective precipitation over 1987–2017 are discussed. None of the MAR experiments compares better with observations than the others and they all show the same trends in (extreme) precipitation. Over the period 1987–2017, MAR suggests a significant increase in the mean annual precipitation amount over the North Sea but a significant decrease over High Belgium. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Interannual variability of cyclones that are generated over the eastern Asian continent and passed over the Yellow, Bohai, and East China seas (YBE cyclones) in spring is analyzed using reanalysis datasets for the period of 1979–2017. Possible causes for the variability are also discussed. Results show that the number of YBE cyclones exhibits significant interannual variability with a period of 4–5 years. Developing cyclones are further classified into two types: rapidly developing cyclones and slowly developing cyclones. The number of rapidly developing cyclones is highly related to the underlying sea surface temperature (SST) anomalies (SSTA) and the atmospheric baroclinicity from Lake Baikal to the Japan Sea. The number of slowly developing cyclones, however, is mainly affected by the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) in the preceding winter (DJF); it works through the upper-level jet stream over Japan and the memory of ocean responses to the atmosphere. Positive NAO phase in winter is associated with the meridional tripole pattern of SSTA in the North Atlantic Ocean, which persists from winter to the following spring (MAM) due to the thermal inertia of the ocean. The SSTA in the critical mid-latitude Atlantic region in turn act to affect the overlying atmosphere via sensible and latent heat fluxes, leading to an increased frequency of slowly developing cyclones via exciting an anomalous eastward-propagating Rossby wave train. Typhoon rainstorms often cause disasters in southern China. Quantitative precipitation estimation (QPE) with the use of polarimetric radar can improve the accuracy of precipitation estimation and enhance typhoon defense ability. On the basis of the observed drop size distribution (DSD) of raindrops, a comparison is conducted among the DSD parameters and the polarimetric radar observation retrieved from DSD in five typhoon and three squall line events that occurred in southern China from 2016 to 2017. A new piecewise fitting method (PFM) is used to develop the QPE estimators for landfall typhoons and squall lines. The performance of QPE is evaluated by two fitting methods for two precipitation types using DSD data collected. Findings indicate that the number concentration of raindrops in typhoon precipitation is large and the average diameter is small, while the raindrops in squall line rain have opposite characteristics. The differential reflectivity (ZDR) and specific differential phase (KDP) in these two precipitation types increase slowly with the reflectivity factor (ZH), whereas the two precipitation types have different ZDR and KDP in the same ZH. Thus, it is critical to fit the rainfall estimator for different precipitation types. Enhanced estimation can be obtained using the estimators for specific precipitation types, whether the estimators are derived from the conventional fitting method (CFM) or PFM, and the estimators fitted using the PFM can produce better results. The estimators for the developed polarimetric radar can be used in operational QPE and quantitative precipitation foresting, and they can improve disaster defense against typhoons and heavy rains. Subdaily rainfall data, though essential for applications in many fields, is not as readily available as daily rainfall data. In this work, regression approaches that use atmospheric data and daily rainfall statistics as predictors are evaluated to downscale daily-to-subdaily rainfall statistics on more than 700 hourly rain gauges in Spain. We propose a new approach based on machine learning techniques that improves the downscaling skill of previous methodologies. Results are grouped by climate types (following the Köppen–Geiger classification) to investigate possible missing explanatory variables in the analysis. The methodology is then used to improve the ability of Poisson cluster models to simulate hourly rainfall series that mimic the statistical behavior of the observed ones. This approach can be applied for the study of extreme events and for daily-to-subdaily precipitation disaggregation in any location of Spain where daily rainfall data are available. Performance of four satellite precipitation products, namely, the China Meteorological Forcing Dataset (CMFD), Climate Prediction Center morphing technique (CMORPH), as well as 3B42 calibrated and 3B42-RT dataset, which are derived from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Multi-satellite Precipitation Analysis (TMPA), were evaluated from daily to annual temporal scales over Beijing, using observations from 36 ground meteorological stations. Five statistical properties and three categorical metrics were used to test the results. The assessment showed that all four satellite precipitation products captured the temporal variability of precipitation. Although four satellite precipitation products captured the trend of more precipitation in the northeastern regions, all four products showed different distribution from the observations for 2001–2015 over Beijing. All precipitation products tended to overestimate moderate precipitation events and underestimate heavy precipitation events over Beijing, except for 3B42RT, which tended to overestimate most precipitation events. By comparison, the CMFD performed better than the CMORPH, 3B42 calibrated, and 3B42-RT datasets, having the higher correlation coefficient and low root mean squared difference, and mean absolute difference at all temporal scales. The average correlation coefficient of the CMFD, CMORPH, 3B42 calibrated, and 3B42-RT products for all 36 stations were 0.70, 0.60, 0.59, and 0.54 for daily precipitation and 0.78, 0.32, 0.74, and 0.44 for monthly precipitation. The Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) model has been successfully used in weather prediction, but its ability to simulate precipitation over areas with complex topography is not optimal. Consequently, WRF has problems forecasting rainfall events over Chilean mountainous terrain and foothills, where some of the main cities are located, and where intense rainfall occurs due to cutoff lows. This work analyzes an ensemble of microphysics schemes to enhance initial forecasts made by the Chilean Weather Agency in the front range of Santiago. We first tested different vertical levels resolution, land use and land surface models, as well as meteorological forcing (GFS/FNL). The final ensemble configuration considered three microphysics schemes and lead times over three rainfall events between 2015 and 2017. Cutoff low complex meteorological characteristics impede the temporal simulation of rainfall properties. With three days of lead time, WRF properly forecasts the rainiest N-hours and temperatures during the event, although more accuracy is obtained when the rainfall is caused by a meteorological frontal system. Finally, the WSM6 microphysics option had the best performance, although further analysis using other storms and locations in the area are needed to strengthen this result. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Understanding long-term changes in precipitation and temperature patterns is important in the detection and characterization of climate change, as is understanding the implications of climate change when performing impact assessments. This study uses a statistically robust methodology to quantify long-, medium- and short-term changes for evaluating the degree to which climate change and urbanization have caused temporal changes in precipitation and temperature in South Korea. We sought to identify a fingerprint of changes in precipitation and temperature based on statistically significant differences at multiple-timescales. This study evaluates historical weather data during a 40-year period (1973–2012) and from 54 weather stations. Our results demonstrate that between 1993–2012, minimum and maximum temperature trends in the vicinity of urban and agricultural areas are significantly different from the two previous decades (1973–1992). The results for precipitation amounts show significant differences in urban areas. These results indicate that the climate in urbanized areas has been affected by both the heat island effect and global warming-caused climate change. The increase in the number of rainfall events in agricultural areas is highly significant, although the temporal trends for precipitation amounts showed no significant differences. Overall, the impacts of climate change and urbanization in South Korea have not been continuous over time and have been expressed locally and regionally in terms of precipitation and temperature changes. We have produced a global ensemble mean of the four third-generation climate reanalysis models for the years 1981–2010. The reanalysis system models used in this study are National Centers for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) Climate Forecast System Reanalysis (CFSR), European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) Reanalysis Interim (ERA-I), Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) 55-year Reanalysis (JRA-55), and National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Modern-Era Retrospective Analysis for Research and Applications (MERRA). Two gridded datasets are used as a baseline, for temperature the Global Historical Climatology Network (GHCN), and for precipitation the Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC). The reanalysis ensemble mean is used here as a comparison tool of the four reanalysis members. Meteorological fields investigated within the reanalysis models include 2-m air temperature, precipitation, and 500-hPa geopotential heights. Comparing the individual reanalysis models to the ensemble mean, we find that each perform similarly over large domains but exhibit significant differences over particular regions. This study investigated potential changes in future precipitation, temperature, and drought across 10 hydrologic regions in California. The latest climate model projections on these variables through 2099 representing the current state of the climate science were applied for this purpose. Changes were explored in terms of differences from a historical baseline as well as the changing trend. The results indicate that warming is expected across all regions in all temperature projections, particularly in late-century. There is no such consensus on precipitation, with projections mostly ranging from −25% to +50% different from the historical baseline. There is no statistically significant increasing or decreasing trend in historical precipitation and in the majority of the projections on precipitation. However, on average, precipitation is expected to increase slightly for most regions. The increases in late-century are expected to be more pronounced than the increases in mid-century. The study also shows that warming in summer and fall is more significant than warming in winter and spring. The study further illustrates that, compared to wet regions, dry regions are projected to become more arid. The inland eastern regions are expecting higher increases in temperature than other regions. Particularly, the coolest region, North Lahontan, tends to have the highest increases in both minimum and maximum temperature and a significant amount of increase in wet season precipitation, indicative of increasing flood risks in this region. Overall, these findings are meaningful from both scientific and practical perspectives. From a scientific perspective, these findings provide useful information that can be utilized to improve the current flood and water supply forecasting models or develop new predictive models. From a practical perspective, these findings can help decision-makers in making different adaptive strategies for different regions to address adverse impacts posed by those potential changes. Daily time series from the Climate Prediction Center (CPC) Africa Rainfall Climatology version 2.0 (ARC2), Climate Hazards Group InfraRed Precipitation with Stations (CHIRPS) and Tropical Applications of Meteorology using SATellite (TAMSAT) African Rainfall Climatology And Time series version 2 (TARCAT) high-resolution long-term satellite rainfall products are exploited to study the spatial and temporal variability of East Africa (EA, 5S–20N, 28–52E) rainfall between 1983 and 2015. Time series of selected rainfall indices from the joint CCl/CLIVAR/JCOMM Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices are computed at yearly and seasonal scales. Rainfall climatology and spatial patterns of variability are extracted via the analysis of the total rainfall amount (PRCPTOT), the simple daily intensity (SDII), the number of precipitating days (R1), the number of consecutive dry and wet days (CDD and CWD), and the number of very heavy precipitating days (R20). Our results show that the spatial patterns of such trends depend on the selected rainfall product, as much as on the geographic areas characterized by statistically significant trends for a specific rainfall index. Nevertheless, indications of rainfall trends were extracted especially at the seasonal scale. Increasing trends were identified for the October–November–December PRCPTOT, R1, and SDII indices over eastern EA, with the exception of Kenya. In March–April–May, rainfall is decreasing over a large part of EA, as demonstrated by negative trends of PRCPTOT, R1, CWD, and R20, even if a complete convergence of all satellite products is not achieved.
