The middle reaches of the Yellow River (MRYR) are a key area for carrying out China's vegetation restoration project. However, the impact of vegetation variation on runoff in the MRYR is still unclear. For quantitatively evaluating the contribution rate of vegetation variation to runoff in the MRYR, this paper quantified the relationship between Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Budyko parameters (w). Then, we used multiple linear regression to quantitatively calculate the contribution rate of different factors on vegetation variation. Finally, an adjusted Budyko formula was constructed to quantitatively calculate the influence of vegetation variation on runoff. The results showed that there is a linear relationship between NDVI and Budyko parameters (w) (p < 0.05); the fitting parameter and constant term were 12.327 and −0.992, respectively. Vegetation change accounted for 33.37% in the MRYR. The contribution of climatic and non-climatic factors on vegetation change is about 1:99. The contribution of precipitation, potential evaporation, anthropogenic activities on the runoff variation in the MRYR are 23.07%, 13.85% and 29.71%, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The clarification of the impact of human activities on vegetation in mining areas contributes to the harmonization of mining and environmental protection. This study utilized Geographically and Temporally Weighted Regression (GTWR) to establish a quantitative relationship among the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), temperature, precipitation, and Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Furthermore, residual analysis was performed to remove the impact of natural factors and separately assess the impact of human activities on vegetation restoration. The experiment was carried out in Shangwan Mine, China, and following results were obtained: (1) During the period of 2000 to 2020, intensified huan activities corresponded to positive vegetation changes (NDVI-HA) that exhibited an upward trend over time. (2) The spatial heterogeneity of vegetation restoration was attributed to the DEM. It is negatively correlated with NDVI in natural conditions, while under the environment of mining activities, there is a positive correlation between NDVI-HA and DEM. (3) The contribution of human activities to vegetation restoration in mining areas has been steadily increasing, surpassing the influences of temperature and precipitation since 2010. It is essential to monitor the dynamics of vegetation at different scales in space and time to promote the sustainable development of terrestrial ecosystems. We used the Google Earth Engine (GEE) cloud platform to perform a comprehensive analysis of the changes in normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) Mann-Kendall (MK) + Sen trend in the hinterland region of the Maowusu sandland in China over the last two decades. We performed bias-correlation studies using soil and climate data. Furthermore, we performed a partial Mantel test to analyze the spatial and temporal fluctuations of vegetation health-related indices. Additionally, we developed a logistic dual model of the phenology index using the Lenvenberg–Marquardt technique. The objective was to uncover the factors contributing to the regional shifts in vegetation dynamics. We provide a comprehensive analytic method designed to monitor vegetation over some time and forecast its future recovery. The findings indicate that over the past 20 years, more than 90% of the regional NDVI in the study area has exhibited a consistent and significant upward trend. This trend is primarily influenced by the adverse impact of temperature and the beneficial impact of precipitation. Additionally, long-term phenological indicators in the study area reveal that the vegetation's growth cycle commences on the 125th day of the year and concludes on the 267th day of the year. This suggests that the shorter duration of the vegetation's growth season may be attributed to the local climate and unfavorable groundwater depth conditions. levated temperatures throughout the next spring and autumn seasons would significantly affect the wellbeing of plants, with soil moisture being a crucial determinant of plant development in the examined region. The Southwest Alpine Canyon Area (SACA), a well-known ecological vulnerability region, plays a very important role in China. Identifying the driving force of the spatial heterogeneity of vegetation and the response of interannual vegetation changes to climate change and human activities would be helpful for ecosystem management. Based on the NDVI dataset, the study analyzed the trend of NDVI change from 2000 to 2019 using the Theil–Sen trend analysis and the Mann–Kendal significance test, detected the driving forces of the spatial heterogeneity of NDVI by the means of the geographical detector, and analyzed the relative contribution of climate change and human activities to interannual NDVI changes using residual analysis model. The results showed that, in terms of the spatial distribution, the pattern of NDVI showed that it is higher in the southeast and lower in the northwest region of the SACA. Elevation was the dominant factor influencing the spatial heterogeneity of NDVI, with the explanatory power of 64%, much larger than other factors, and vegetation type, temperature, precipitation, land use type, and soil type were the main factors. In addition, the explanatory power of the dual factor interaction was higher than that of the single factor effect, which showed two kinds of interaction relationships: bivariate enhancement and nonlinear enhancement. In terms of the temporal variation, 85.59% of the study area showed an increasing trend, and only 14.41% of the area showed a decreasing trend. The main factor affecting NDVI changes was human activities, and climate change was the secondary factor, with relative contributions of 71.35% and 28.65%, respectively. The study will promote a better understanding of the complex mechanisms of vegetation changes and provide scientific recommendations for the prevention of vegetation degradation and vegetation restoration in the SACA. How to distinguish the relative role of climate change and human activities in vegetation dynamics has attracted increasing attention. However, most of the current studies concentrate on arid and semiarid regions, while the relative contributions of climate change and human activities to vegetation changes remain unclear in warm-humid regions. Based on the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and climatic variables (temperature, precipitation, radiation) during 2001–2020, this study used the Theil–Sen median trend analysis, partial correlation analysis, and residual trend analysis to analyze the spatiotemporal pattern of vegetation trends, the response of vegetation to climate variations, and the climatic and anthropogenic contributions to vegetation dynamics in the warm and humid Guangdong Province of south China. Results showed that the NDVI in most areas exhibited an increasing trend. Changes in climatic variables displayed different spatial variations which, however, were not significant in most areas. Vegetation responded diversely to climate change with temperature as the most important climatic factor for vegetation improvement in most areas, while precipitation was the dominant climatic factor in the southern edge region and radiation was the dominant climatic factor in the central and western regions. Vegetation in most areas was influenced by both climate change and human activities, but the contribution rate of human activities was commonly much higher than climate change. The findings of this study are expected to enhance our understanding of the relative climatic and anthropogenic contributions to vegetation changes in warm-humid regions and provide a scientific basis for future ecological policies and ecosystem management in highly urbanized regions. Desert farmland provides food for desert areas, but water is the main limiting factor of this region, thus desert farmland has an extremely fragile ecological environment. This study investigated the temporal and spatial variations of vegetation NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) in the Ulan Buh Desert, China, from 1990 to 2022, using long-term Landsat satellite data obtained from the Google Earth Engine platform and local statistical data. The results showed that from 1990 to 2022, the NDVI exhibited relatively small fluctuations and a steady increase. Furthermore, the study analyzed the impact of climate factors, namely precipitation and temperature, on NDVI, and collected the groundwater lever changes under irrigation and farmland development. The results demonstrated a positive correlation between NDVI and both precipitation and temperature from 1990 to 2006. The study area experienced an overall trend of increasing humidity. Specifically, from 1990 to 2006, significant positive correlations with precipitation and temperature were observed in 4.4% and 5.5% of the region, respectively. From 2007 to 2022, significant positive correlations were observed in 5.4% and 72.8% of the region for precipitation and temperature, respectively. These findings suggest that temperature has become increasingly influential on vegetation NDVI, while the impact of precipitation remains relatively stable. Moreover, the study assessed the impact of human activities on vegetation NDVI. The results revealed that from 1990 to 2006, human activities contributed to 43.1% of the promotion of local vegetation NDVI, which increased to 90.9% from 2007 to 2022. This study provides valuable insights into the dynamics of vegetation in the Ulan Buh Desert and its response to climatic changes and human activities. As a vital ecological barrier in China, Yellow River Basin (YRB) is strategically significant for China's national development and modernization. However, YRB has fragile ecosystems, and is sensitive to climatic change. Extreme climate events (e.g., heavy precipitation, heatwaves, and extreme hot and cold) occur frequently in this basin, but the implications (positive and negative effects) of these events on vegetation dynamics remains insufficiently understood. Combing with net primary productivity (NPP), the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and extreme climate indexes, we explored the spatio–temporal characteristics of plants' growth and extreme climate, together with the reaction of plants' growth to extreme climate in the Yellow River Basin. This study demonstrated that annual NPP and NDVI of cropland, forest, and grassland in the study region all revealed a climbing tendency. The multi-year monthly averaged NPP and NDVI were characterized by a typical unimodal distribution, with the maximum values of NPP (66.18 gC·m−2) and NDVI (0.54) occurring in July and August, respectively. Spatially, multi–year averaged of vegetation indicators decreased from southeast to northwest. During the study period, carbon flux (NPP) and vegetation index (NDVI) both exhibited improvement in most of the YRB. The extreme precipitation indexes and extreme high temperature indexes indicated an increasing tendency; however, the extreme low temperature indexes reduced over time. NPP and NDVI were negatively associated with extreme low temperature indexes and positively correlated with extreme high temperature indexes, and extreme precipitation indicators other than consecutive dry days. Time lag cross–correlation analysis displayed that the influences of extreme temperature indexes on vegetation indexes (NPP and NDVI) were delayed by approximately six months, while the effects of extreme precipitation indexes were immediate. The study outcomes contribute to our comprehension of plants' growth, and also their reaction to extreme climates, and offer essential support for evidence–based ecological management practices in the Yellow River Basin. Remote sensing has frequently been employed to monitor extreme climatic events, especially droughts, by identifying the anomalies of vegetation activity from the regional to global scale. However, limited research has addressed the performance of remote sensing on detecting extreme precipitation events. By using the Middle and Lower Reaches of the Yangtze River (MLR-YR) in China as an example, this paper examines the application of the satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) for detecting the change of extreme precipitation events from 1982 to 2012. The performances of three NDVI-based indices, including minimum, mean, and maximum NDVIs, were examined to capture the sensibility of vegetation activity to changes in extreme precipitation events. The results show not only common enhanced trends, but also obvious spatial discrepancies between the intensity and frequency of extreme precipitation events in the MLR-YR. As to its application on terrestrial vegetation, changes in extreme precipitation intensity coincided with that of the vegetation activity, which was represented as the maximum and the minimum NDVIs, especially the maximum NDVI. In addition, similar patterns were found between the standard deviation of the maximum NDVI and the trend of extreme precipitation intensity. Furthermore, the correlation coefficients were relatively greater between the maximum NDVI and extreme precipitation intensity than that of the minimum NDVI. Our results support the hypothesis that maximum NDVI is more suited to capture the response of vegetation activity to extreme precipitation events in the MLR-YR region, in comparison to the other two NDVI indices. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is one of the most common metrics used to describe vegetation dynamics. Unfortunately, low-quality pixels resulting from contamination (by features including clouds, snow, aerosols, and mixed factors) have impeded NDVI products' widespread application. Researchers have thought of several ways to improve NDVI quality when contamination occurs. However, most of these algorithms are based on the noise-negative deviation principle, which aligns low-value NDVI products to an upper line but ignores cases where absolute surface values are low. Consequently, to fill in these research gaps, in this article, we use the random forest model to produce a set of high-quality NDVI products to represent actual surface characteristics more accurately and naturally. Climate and geographical products are used as model inputs to describe environmental factors. They represent the random forest (RF) model that establishes relationships between MODIS NDVI products and meteorological products in high-quality areas. In addition, auxiliary data and empirical knowledge are employed to meet filling requirements. Notably, the random forest (RF) algorithm exhibits a mean absolute error (MAE) of 0.024 and a root mean squared error (RMSE) of 0.034, in addition to a coefficient of determination (R2) value of 0.974. Furthermore, the MAE and RMSE of the RF-based method decreased by 0.014 and 0.019, respectively, when compared to those of the STSG (spatial–temporal Savitzky–Golay) plan and by 0.013 and 0.015, respectively, when compared to the LSTM (long short-term memory) method. R2 increased by 0.039 and 0.027, respectively, compared to the STSG and LSTM methods. We introduced a novel series of NDVI products that demonstrated consistent spatial and temporal connectivity. The novel product exhibits enhanced adaptability to intricate environmental conditions and promises the potential for utilization in investigating vegetation dynamics within the Chinese region. Extreme drought is increasing in frequency and intensity in many regions globally. Understanding the changes in vegetation resistance and resilience under aggravated drought is essential for maintaining regional ecosystem stability. In this study, a drought event–vegetation response framework was developed to explore vegetation resistance and resilience changes. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was correlated with the standardized precipitation evapotranspiration index (SPEI) at multiple timescales to screen out the vegetation response time to drought. Then, the SPEI for the response time was detected using run theory to identify drought events during the period 2000–2017. Finally, drought-induced NDVI anomaly changes were identified using a sliding window to explore the changes in resistance and resilience to drought. This study focuses on Jilin province, China, which contains a famous environmentally vulnerable area. The results illustrate that the response time of vegetation to drought is 3 months. The northwest of Jilin province is considered to be drought-vulnerable because it has suffered the most drought events, i.e., 19–21 times, with severities in the range of 2.6–3.2 and durations in the range of 3.6–4.1 months. Grassland shows the weakest resistance and the strongest resilience, and tree cover shows the strongest resistance and the weakest resilience under severe drought disturbance among all vegetation. As the severity and duration of drought increase, the resistance decreases, and the resilience increases. During the growing season, the drought from May to July significantly impacts the vegetation resistance. Drought occurring from June to July has much less impact on resilience. Drought in August to September has less impact on resistance and a more significant impact on resilience. In the context of global climate change, many studies have focused on the interannual vegetation variation trends and their response to precipitation and temperature, but ignored the effects of seasonal variability. This study explored the relationship between normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and seasonal climate elements in the Wuliangsu Lake Basin area from 1990 to 2020, and quantified the impacts of human activities on vegetation dynamics. We used Landsat series data to analyze the spatial and temporal variation of the NDVI using the trend analysis method, the Theil–Sen median, the Mann–Kendall test, and the Hurst index. Then, we used meteorological data and land use data to quantify the effects of human activities using residual analysis, and correlation methods to determine the driving forces of NDVI variations. The results showed that the NDVI changes presented obvious regional characteristics, with a decreasing trend from southeast to northwest in Wuliangsu Lake Basin. Due to global warming, the start of the growing season (SOS) is 4.3 days (2001 to 2010) and 6.8 days (2011 to 2020) earlier compared with 1990 to 2000. The end of the season (EOS) is advanced by 3.6 days (2001 to 2010), and delayed by 8.9 days (2011 to 2020). Seasonal (spring, summer, autumn, and winter) NDVIs with precipitation and temperature show spatial heterogeneity. Further, changes in grasslands and woodlands were vulnerable to climate change and human activities. Since the beginning of the 21st century, human activity was the driving force for vegetation improvement in the Dengkou, west-central, north and southwest regions, where ecological instability is weak. This finding can provide a theoretical basis for the implementation of the same type of ecological restoration projects and the construction of ecological civilization, and contribute to the regional green and sustainable development. Terrestrial vegetation, a critical component of the Earth's land surface, directly impacts the planet's material and energy balance. This study investigated the dynamics of terrestrial vegetation in China from 2000 to 2019 using three remote sensing products (NDVI, EVI, and SIF) and explored the driving mechanisms behind these changes. We considered three meteorological factors, nine land use types, and two socio-economic factors while employing mathematical models to analyze the data. Additionally, we used the CA–Markov model to predict the spatial distribution of vegetation remote sensing products for 2020–2025. Our findings indicate the following: (1) Throughout the study period, the vegetation indices, NDVI, EVI, and SIF, all exhibited increasing trends. The SIF showed a more direct response to vegetation cover changes and was less influenced by other driving factors. The SIF outperforms the NDVI and EVI in detecting vegetation trend changes, particularly regarding sensitivity. (2) Vegetation cover changes are driven by multiple meteorological factors, such as temperature, precipitation, and relative humidity. These factors exhibit a strong spatial correlation with the distribution of vegetation remote sensing products. Among these factors, the SIF shows a higher sensitivity to temperature compared to the NDVI and EVI, while the NDVI and EVI display greater sensitivity to precipitation and relative humidity. (3) Within the study area, land use types reveal a gradient from northwest to southeast, which is consistent with the spatial distribution of the vegetation remote sensing products. For green vegetation types, the three remote sensing products exhibit varying sensitivity levels, with the SIF demonstrating the highest sensitivity to green vegetation types. (4) Overall, the future vegetation outlook in China is promising, especially in the southeastern regions where significant vegetation improvement trends are evident. However, the vegetation conditions in some northwestern areas remain less favorable, necessitating the reinforcement of ecological construction and improvement measures. Additionally, a significant positive correlation exists between population size, GDP, and vegetation remote sensing products. This study highlights the variability in the dynamics and driving mechanisms of terrestrial vegetation remote sensing products in China and employs the CA–Markov model for predicting future vegetation patterns. In recent decades, the vegetation of the Sanjiangyuan region has undergone a series of changes under the influence of climate change, and ecological restoration projects have been implemented. In this paper, we analyze the spatiotemporal dynamics of vegetation in this region using the satellite-retrieved normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from the global inventory modeling and mapping studies (GIMMS) and moderate resolution imaging and spectroradiometer (MODIS) datasets during the past 34 years. Specifically, the characteristics of vegetation changes were analyzed according to the stage of implementation of different ecological engineering programs. The results are as follows. (1) The vegetation in 65.6% of the study area exhibited an upward trend, and in 53.0% of the area, it displayed a large increase, which was mainly distributed in the eastern part of the study area. (2) The vegetation NDVI increased to differing degrees during stages of ecological engineering. (3) The NDVI in the western part of the Sanjiangyuan region is mainly affected by temperature, while in the northeastern part, the NDVI is affected more by precipitation. In the southern part, however, vegetation growth is affected neither by temperature nor by precipitation. On the whole region, vegetation growing is more affected by temperature than by precipitation. (4) The impacts of human activities on vegetation change are both positive and negative. In recent years, ecological engineering projects have had a positive impact on vegetation growth. This study can help us to correctly understand the impact of climate change on vegetation growth, so as to provide a scientific basis for the evaluation of regional ecological engineering effectiveness and the formulation of ecological protection policies. Engineering corridors on the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau have substantially modified the regional ecosystem functions and environment, resulting in changes in the alpine ecosystem. In addition, the building and operation of these engineering corridors have led to rapid permafrost degradation, which in turn has impacted local vegetation along these corridors. This study investigated vegetation changes and their driving factors by the methods of coefficient of variation, correlation analysis, and GeoDetector in a 30 km wide buffer zone at each side along the National Highway G214 (G214) at the northern and southern flanks of the Bayan Har Mountains in part of the source area of the Yellow and Yangtze rivers on the southern Qinghai Plateau, West China. The following results were obtained: (1) The Normalized Difference Vegetation Index in Growing Season (NDVIgs) rose slightly in 2010–2019, with an average annual change rate of 0.006/a. Patterns of NDVIgs along the G214 exhibited "low at the northern flank and high at the southern flank of the Bayan Har Mountains". (2) Spatially, average NDVIgs increased from the first buffer zone at the distance of 0–10 km from the highway centerline to the second buffer zone at 20–30 km perpendicularly away from the G214. Furthermore, the first buffer zone had the lowest coefficient of variation, possibly due to a low vegetation recovery as a result of the greatest influence of the G214 on NDVIgs at 0–10 km. (3) Furthermore, annual precipitation (AP) was the dominant factor for significantly (p < 0.01) and positively influencing the variations in NDVIgs (R = 0.75, p < 0.01). Additionally, NDVIgs was more strongly influenced by the two combined factors than any single one, with the highest q-value (0.74) for the interactive influences of AP and annual average air temperature (AAAT) and followed by that of the AP and mean annual ground temperature (MAGT) at the depth of zero annual amplitude (15 m). Evidently, the construction and operation of the G214 have directly and indirectly affected vegetation through changing environmental variables, with significant impacts on NDVIgs extended at least 20 km outwards from the highway. Vegetation change and ecological quality of the Loess Plateau (LP) are directly related to ecological protection and high-quality development of the Yellow River Basin. Based on LP ecological zoning and multisource remote sensing data, we analyzed vegetation change and its relationship with climate, terrestrial water storage (TWS), and land use/cover change from 2000 to 2020, using the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI), fraction of vegetation cover (FVC), and net primary productivity (NPP). And ecological environmental quality was evaluated based on the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI). The results showed that the spatial distribution pattern of NDVI, FVC and NPP decreased from southeast to northwest in the LP as a whole. Vegetation in the LP recovered significantly, and NDVI, FVC, and NPP showed significant increases of 35.66%, 34%, and 54.69%, respectively. The average NDVI and FVC in the earth–rocky mountainous region and river valley plain region (Area D) were the highest, but the growth rate was the slowest. The average NDVI, FVC, and growth rates in the loess hilly and gully regions (Area B) were slightly higher than those in the loess sorghum gully region (Area A). The average NDVI, FVC, and NPP in the sandy land and agricultural irrigation regions (Area C) were the lowest but showed significant increase. RSEI in most LP areas changed from poor to medium, increasing by 43.45%. Precipitation is the basic factor affecting vegetation cover pattern, with the increase (40.79 mm/10a) promoting vegetation restoration in the LP. Vegetation restoration lost much TWS (−0.6 mm/month), and Area D had the highest average NDVI, FVC, and NPP but the largest TWS loss. Anthropogenic land use/cover change (LUCC) (decrease in cultivated land and unused land; increase in forest, grassland, and construction land) is the primary factor affecting LP vegetation change. As the main carbon sink in the carbon cycle process, vegetation is an important support for achieving "carbon peaking" and "carbon neutrality. How does the vegetation coverage of urban built-up areas change in the process of urbanization in China? Taking advantage of Landsat remote sensing data, we extract urban built-up areas, calculate the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), estimate fractional vegetation cover (FVC), and analyze the temporal and spatial dynamics of vegetation coverage in built-up areas of provincial capitals from the national and individual city levels in China. Major conclusions are as follows: (1) The FVC in the urban built-up areas has increased by 7.97%, and the urban green space has gradually changed from the "green core" distribution model to the "green vein" distribution mode. (2) The disparities in FVC of built-up areas of provincial capitals are notable, presumably due to a variety of factors that include the natural geographic environment, economic development level, built-up area expansion, land type conversion, afforestation of greening policy, etc. (3) Not just simply raise or lower, the FVC curves in the built-up areas of provincial capital cities present oscillating patterns with gradually weakening amplitude. Our study is expected to provide scientific references of an important theoretical basis for urban ecological construction and practical support for promoting the harmonious development of urban residents and urban environments in China. Sanjiang Plain is the most extensive marsh distribution region in China. Marshes in this region can protect biodiversity, regulate climate, and provide habitats for wild animals and plants. The normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) is a crucial indicator of vegetation coverage, which may reflect ecosystem structure and functional features. Clarifying the spatiotemporal change of marsh coverage and its climatic drivers is vital for observing and predicting vegetation change in Sanjiang Plain. Using meteorological dataand MODIS NDVI data from 2000 to 2020, we analyzed the spatiotemporal variation in marsh vegetation coverage and climatic change effects in Sanjiang Plain. We found that the growing season vegetation NDVI of marsh increased significantly at a rate of 0.011/decade, indicating that the marsh vegetation growth has obviously improved during the past 21 years. Furthermore, we found that the increase of minimum (Tmin) and maximum (Tmax) temperature in July can significantly promote the marsh plant growth, and increasing nighttime Tmin has a stronger impact on promoting the growth than increasing daytime Tmax in this month. In addition, the increase of daytime Tmax in August can promote the marsh vegetation growth, whereas the increasing precipitation in August was unfavorable for the growth in Sanjiang Plain. Changes in meteorology, hydrology, and vegetation will have significant impacts on the ecological environment of a basin, and the middle-upper reach of Huaihe River (MUHR) is one of the key regions for vegetation restoration in China. However, less studies have quantitatively accounted for the contribution of vegetation changes to land surface discharge in the MUHR. To quantitatively evaluate the influence of vegetation changes on land surface discharge in the MUHR, the Bernaola–Galavan (B–G) segmentation algorithm was utilized to recognize the mutation year of the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) time sequence data. Next, the functional relationship between the underlying surface parameter and the NDVI was quantitatively analyzed, and an adjusted Budyko formula was constructed. Finally, the effects of vegetation changes, climate factors, and mankind activities on the surface discharge in the MUHR were computed using the adjusted Budyko formula and elastic coefficient method. The results showed the following: (1) the surface runoff and precipitation from 1982 to 2015 in the MUHR presented a falling trend, yet the NDVI and potential evaporation presented an upward trend; (2) 2004 was the mutation year of the NDVI time series data, and the underlying surface parameter showed a significant linear regression relationship with the NDVI (p < 0.05); (3) the vegetation variation played a major role in the runoff variation during the changing period (2005–2015) in the MUHR. Understanding the driving mechanisms of vegetation development is critical for maintaining terrestrial ecosystem function in mountain areas, especially under the background of climate change. The Qinba Mountains (QBM), a critical north–south transition zone in China, is an environmentally fragile area that is vulnerable to climate change. It is essential to characterize how its ecological environment has changed. Currently, such a characterization remains unclear in the spatiotemporal patterns of the nonlinear effects and interactions between environmental factors and vegetation changes in the QBM. Here, we utilized the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), obtained from Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform, as an indicator of terrestrial ecosystem conditions. Then, we measured the spatiotemporal heterogeneity for vegetation variation in the QBM from 2003 to 2018. Specifically, the Geodetector method, a new geographically statistical method without linear assumptions, was employed to detect the interaction between vegetation and environmental driving factors. The results indicated that there is a trend of a general increase in vegetation growth amplitude (the average NDVI increased from 0.810 to 0.858). The areas with an NDVI greater than 0.8 are mainly distributed in the Qinling Mountains and the Daba Mountains, which account for more than 76.39% of the QBM area. For the entire region, the global Moran's index of the NDVI is greater than 0.95, indicating that vegetation is highly concentrated in the spatial domain. The Geodetector identified that landform type was the primary factor in controlling vegetation changes, contributing 24.19% to the total variation, while the explanatory powers of the aridity index and the wetness index for vegetation changes were 22.49% and 21.47%, respectively. Furthermore, the interaction effects between any two factors outperformed the influence of a single environmental variable. The interaction between air temperature and the aridity index was the most significant element, contributing to 47.10% of the vegetation variation. These findings can not only improve our understanding in the interactive effects of environmental forces on vegetation change, but also be a valuable reference for ecosystem management in the QBM area, such as ecological conservation planning and the assessment of ecosystem functions. Global climate change profoundly influences the patterns of vegetation growth. However, the disparities in vegetation responses induced by regional climate characteristics are generally weakened in large-scale studies. Meanwhile, distinct climatic drivers of vegetation growth result in the different reactions of different vegetation types to climate variability. Hence, it is an extraordinary challenge to detect and attribute vegetation growth changes. In this study, the spatiotemporal distribution and dynamic characteristics of climate change effects on vegetation growth from 2000 to 2020 were investigated by the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) dataset during the growing season (April–October). Meanwhile, we further detected the climate-dominated factor between different vegetation types (i.e., forest, shrub, and grass) within the Chaohe watershed located in temperate northern China. The results revealed a continuous greening trend over the entire study period, despite slowing down since 2007 (p < 0.05). Growing-season precipitation (P) was identified as the dominant climatic factor of the greening trend (p < 0.05), and approximately 34.83% of the vegetated area exhibited a significant response to increasing P. However, continued warming-induced intensive evaporation demand caused the vegetation growth to slow down. Hereinto, the areas with a significantly positive response of forest growth to temperature decreased from 24.38% to 18.06% (p < 0.05). In addition, solar radiation (SW) corresponds to the vegetation trend in the watershed (p < 0.05), and the significantly positive SW-influenced areas increased from 9.24% and 2.64% to 11.78% and 3.37% in forests and shrubland, respectively (p < 0.05). Our findings highlight the nonlinearity of long-term vegetation growth trends with climate variation and the cause of this divergence, which provide vital insights into forecasting vegetation responses to future climate change. Vegetation in the terrestrial ecosystem, sensitive to climate change and human activities, exerts a crucial influence on the carbon cycles in land, ocean, and atmosphere. Discrimination between climate and human-induced vegetation dynamics is advocated but still limited, especially in coastal China, which is characterized by a developed economy, a large population, and high food production, but also by unprecedented climate change and warming. Taking coastal China as the research area, our study used the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in growing seasons, as well as precipitation, temperature, and sunlight hours datasets, adopted residual trend analysis at pixel and regional scales in coastal China from 2000–2019 and aims to (1) delineate the patterns and processes of vegetation changes, and (2) separate the relative contributions of climate and human activities by adopting residual trend analysis. The results indicated that (1) coastal China experienced the most vegetation greening (83.04% of the whole region) and partial degradation (16.86% of the whole region) with significant spatial heterogeneity; (2) compared with climate change, human activities have a greater positive impact on NDVI, and the regions were mainly located in the north of the North China Plain and the south of southern China; (3) the relative contribution rates of climate change and human activities were detected to be 0–60% and 60–100%, respectively; (4) in the northern coastal areas, the improvement of cultivated land management greatly promoted the greening of vegetation and thus the increase of grain yield, while in southern coastal areas, afforestation and the restoration of degraded forest were responsible for vegetation restoration; and (5) similar results obtained by partial correlation between nighttime lights and NDVI indicated the reliability of the residual trend analysis. The linear relationships of precipitation, temperature, and radiation on NDVI may limit the accurate estimation of climate drivers on vegetation, and further ecosystem process-modeling approaches can be used to estimate the relative contribution of climate change and human activities. Over the past few decades, concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2), a key greenhouse gas, have risen at a global rate of approximately 2 ppm/a. China is the largest CO2 emitter and is the principle contributor to the increase in global CO2 levels. Based on a satellite-retrieved atmospheric carbon dioxide column average dry air mixing ratio (XCO2) dataset, derived from the greenhouse gas observation satellite (GOSAT), this paper evaluates the spatial and temporal variations of XCO2 characteristics in China during 2009–2016. Moreover, the factors influencing changes in XCO2 were investigated. Results showed XCO2 concentrations in China increased at an average rate of 2.28 ppm/a, with significant annual seasonal variations of 6.78 ppm. The rate of change of XCO2 was greater in south China compared to other regions across China, with clear differences in seasonality. Seasonal variations in XCO2 concentrations across China were generally controlled by vegetation dynamics, characterized by the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI). However, driving factors exhibited spatial variations. In particular, a distinct belt (northeast–southwest) with a significant negative correlation (r < −0.75) between XCO2 and NDVI was observed. Furthermore, in north China, human emissions were identified as the dominant influencing factor of total XCO2 variations (r > 0.65), with forest fires taking first place in southwest China (r > 0.47). Our results in this study can provide us with a potential way to better understand the spatiotemporal changes of CO2 concentration in China with NDVI, human activity and biomass burning, and could have an enlightening effect on slowing the growth of CO2 concentration in China. The dynamic monitoring and analysis of wetland vegetation play important roles in revealing the change, restoration and reconstruction of the ecosystem environment. The increasing availability of high spatial-temporal resolution remote sensing data provides an unprecedented opportunity for wetland dynamic monitoring and change detection. Using the reconstructed dense monthly Landsat time series, this study focuses on the continuous monitoring of vegetation dynamics in Dongting Lake wetland, south China, in the last two decades (2000–2019) by using the Bayesian estimator of abrupt change, seasonal change, and trend (BEAST) method. Firstly, the flexible spatiotemporal data fusion (FSDAF) model is applied to blend Landsat and moderate-resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) images on the basis of the input image pair selection strategy named "cross-fusion" to generate the monthly time-series normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) with the spatial resolution of 30 m. Then, the abrupt changes, trend, and seasonality of the vegetation in the study area as well as the uncertainties of change detection are estimated by the BEAST method. Results show that there is a close relationship between the ground true data and the estimated changepoints. A high overall accuracy (OA) of 87.37% and Kappa coefficient of 0.85 were achieved by the proposed framework. Additionally, the temporal validation got the interval intersection of 86.57% and the absolute difference of mean interval length of 6.8 days. All of the results demonstrate that the vegetation changes in the Dongting Lake wetland varied spatially and temporally in the last two decades, because of extreme weathers and anthropogenic factors. The presented approach can accurately identify the vegetation changes and time of disturbance in both the spatial and temporal domains, and also can retrieve the evolution process of wetland vegetation under the influence of climate changes and human activities. Vegetation is an important part of terrestrial ecosystems. Although vegetation dynamics have explicit spatial and temporal dimensions, the study of the temporal process is in its infancy. Evaluation of temporal scaling behavior could provide a unique perspective for exploring the temporal nature of vegetation dynamics. In this study, the Global Inventory Modeling and Mapping Studies (GIMMS) Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) was used to reflect vegetation dynamics, and the temporal scaling behavior of the NDVI in China was determined via detrended fluctuation analysis (DFA). Our main objectives were to reveal the temporal scaling behavior of NDVI time series and to understand variation among vegetation types. First, DFA revealed similar exponents, which ranged from 0.6 to 0.9, for all selected pixels, implying that a long-range correlation was generally present in the NDVI time series at the individual pixel scale. We then extended the analysis to all of China and found that 99.30% of the pixel exponents ranged from 0.5 to 1. These results suggest that the NDVI time series displays strong long-range correlation throughout most of China; however, the exponents exhibited regional variability. To explain these differences, we further analyzed the exponents for 12 vegetation types based on a vegetation map of China. All of the vegetation types exhibited well-defined long-range correlation, with exponents ranging from 0.7189 to 0.8436. For all vegetation types, the maximum and average value and standard deviation of the exponents decreased with increasing annual maximum NDVI values, suggesting that low vegetation density is much more sensitive to external factors. This study investigated the spatiotemporal variation of vegetation growth and the influence of climatic drivers from 1982 to 2011 across China using datasets from the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and climatic drivers. Long term trends, significance and abrupt change points of interannual NDVI time series were analyzed. We applied both simple regression and multi-regression models to quantify the effects of climatic drivers on vegetation growth and compare their relative contributions. Results show that on average, the growing season NDVI significantly increased by 0.0007 year-1, with 76.5% of the research area showed increasing NDVI from 1982 to 2011. Seasonally, NDVI increased at high rates during the spring and autumn while changed slightly during the summer. At a national scale, the growing season NDVI was significantly and positively correlated to temperature and precipitation, with temperature being the dominant factor. At regional scales, the growing season NDVI was dominated by increasing temperature in most forest-covered areas in southern China and dominated by precipitation in most grassland in northern China. Within the past three decades, the increasing trend of national mean NDVI abruptly changed in 1994, slowing down from 0.0008 year-1 to 0.0003 year-1. To be regional specific, the growing season NDVI in forest covered southern China has accelerated together with temperature since mid 1990s, while parts of the grassland in northern China have undergone stalled NDVI trends corresponding to slowed temperature increment and dropped precipitation since around 2000. Typical region analysis suggested that apart from long term trends and abrupt change points of climatic drivers, the processes of NDVI variation were also affected by other external factors such as drought and afforestation. Vegetation regulates the exchange of terrestrial carbon and water fluxes and connects the biosphere, hydrosphere, and atmosphere. Over the last four decades, vegetation greening has been observed worldwide using satellite technology. China has also experienced a notably widespread greening trend. However, the responsiveness of vegetation dynamics to elevated CO2 concentration, climate change, and human activities remains unclear. In this study, we attempted to explore the impact of natural (precipitation, air temperature), biogeochemical (CO2), and anthropogenic drivers (nighttime light, afforestation area) on changes in vegetation greenness in the Haihe River Basin (HRB) during 2002–2018 at the county-level. We further determined the major factors affecting the variation in satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) from moderate resolution imaging spectroradiometer (MODIS) for each county. The results indicated that over 85% of the counties had a significantly increased NDVI trend, and the average linear trend of annual NDVI across the study region was 0.0037 per year. The largest contributor to the NDVI trend was CO2 (mean contribution 45%), followed by human activities (mean contribution of 27%). Additionally, afforestation was a pronounced driving force for NDVI changes in mountainous areas, resulting from ecosystem restoration efforts. Our findings emphasize the crucial role of CO2 fertilization in vegetation cover change, while considering CO2 concentration, climate change, and human activities, and shed light on the significant influences of afforestation programs on water resources, especially in mountainous areas. Understanding the driving mechanism of vegetation changes is essential for vegetation restoration and management. Vegetation coverage in the Poyang Lake basin (PYLB) has changed dramatically under the context of climate change and human activities in recent decades. It remains challenging to quantify the relative contribution of natural and anthropogenic factors to vegetation change due to their complicated interaction effects. In this study, we selected the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) as an indicator of vegetation growth and used trend analysis and the Mann-Kendall test to analyze its spatiotemporal change in the PYLB from 2000 to 2020. Then we applied the Geodetector model, a novel spatial analysis method, to quantify the effects of natural and anthropogenic factors on vegetation change. The results showed that most regions of the basin were experiencing vegetation restoration and the overall average NDVI value in the basin increased from 0.756 to 0.809 with an upward yearly trend of +0.0026. Land-use type exerted the greatest influence on vegetation change, followed by slope, elevation, and soil types. Except for conversions to construction land, most types of land use conversion induced an increase in NDVI in the basin. The influence of one factor on vegetation NDVI was always enhanced when interacting with another. The interaction effect of land use types and population density was the largest, which could explain 45.6% of the vegetation change, indicating that human activities dominated vegetation change in the PYLB. Moreover, we determined the ranges or types of factors most suitable for vegetation growth, which can be helpful for decision-makers to optimize the implementation of ecological projects in the PYLB in the future. Large-scale ecological restoration (ER) projects have been implemented in northwest China in recent decades as a means to prevent desertification and improve ecosystem services. However, previous studies have demonstrated adverse impacts in the form of widespread soil water deficit caused by intensive ER activities. Understanding the role of climate change and ER efforts in vegetation dynamics and soil moisture consumption is essential for sustainable ecosystem management. Here, we used the break for additive season and trend (BFAST) method to analyse spatial patterns in the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) variation over the agro-pastoral ecotone of northwest China (APENC) for 2000–2015. From the combined use of generalized additive modelling (GAM) and residual-trend analysis (RESTREND), we distinguished and quantified the effects of climate and human management on vegetation and soil water dynamics. Approximately 78% of the area showed vegetation variations representing a significant change in NDVI, of which more than 68% were categorized as abrupt changes. Large areas of the abrupt change type, interrupted increase and monotonic increase in NDVI were observed before 2006, and small areas of the change type of negative reversals were observed after 2012. Anthropogenic activity was found to be the major driving factor of variation in vegetation (contribution rate of 56%) and soil moisture (contribution rate of 78%). The vegetation expansion, which was mainly related to the large number of ER programs that started in 2000, was found to increase soil moisture depletion. By comparing areas where anthropogenic activities had a high contribution rate to vegetation increase and areas where soil moisture consumption was severely increased, we identify and discuss hotspot areas of soil moisture consumption caused by the ER programs. Remote sensing vegetation index data contain important information about the effects of ozone pollution, climate change and other factors on vegetation growth. However, the absence of long-term observational data on surface ozone pollution and neglected air pollution-induced effects on vegetation growth have made it difficult to conduct in-depth studies on the long-term, large-scale ozone pollution effects on vegetation health. In this study, a multiple linear regression model was developed, based on normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) data, ozone mass mixing ratio (OMR) data at 1000 hPa, and temperature (T), precipitation (P) and surface net radiation (SSR) data during 1982–2020 to quantitatively assess the impact of ozone pollution and climate change on vegetation growth in China on growing season. The OMR data showed an increasing trend in 99.9% of regions in China over the last 39 years, and both NDVI values showed increasing trends on a spatial basis with different ozone pollution levels. Additionally, the significant correlations between NDVI and OMR, temperature and SSR indicate that vegetation activity is closely related to ozone pollution and climate change. Ozone pollution affected 12.5% of NDVI, and climate change affected 26.7% of NDVI. Furthermore, the effects from ozone pollution and climate change on forest, shrub, grass and crop vegetation were evaluated. Notably, the impact of ozone pollution on vegetation growth was 0.47 times that of climate change, indicating that the impact of ozone pollution on vegetation growth cannot be ignored. This study not only deepens the understanding of the effects of ozone pollution and climate change on vegetation growth but also provides a research framework for the large-scale monitoring of air pollution on vegetation health using remote sensing vegetation data. The spatiotemporal evolution of vegetation and its influencing factors can be used to explore the relationships among vegetation, climate change, and human activities, which are of great importance for guiding scientific management of regional ecological environments. In recent years, remote sensing technology has been widely used in dynamic monitoring of vegetation. In this study, the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and standardized precipitation–evapotranspiration index (SPEI) from 1998 to 2017 were used to study the spatiotemporal variation of NDVI in China. The influences of climate change and human activities on NDVI variation were investigated based on the Mann–Kendall test, correlation analysis, and other methods. The results show that the growth rate of NDVI in China was 0.003 year−1. Regions with improved and degraded vegetation accounted for 71.02% and 22.97% of the national territorial area, respectively. The SPEI decreased in 60.08% of the area and exhibited an insignificant drought trend overall. Human activities affected the vegetation cover in the directions of both destruction and restoration. As the elevation and slope increased, the correlation between NDVI and SPEI gradually increased, whereas the impact of human activities on vegetation decreased. The Qaidam Basin is a unique and complex ecosystem, wherein elevation gradients lead to high spatial heterogeneity in vegetation dynamics and responses to environmental factors. Based on the remote sensing data of Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) and Global Land Data Assimilation System (GLDAS), we analyzed the spatiotemporal variations of vegetation dynamics and responses to precipitation, accumulative temperature (AT) and soil moisture (SM) in the Qaidam Basin from 2001 to 2016. Moreover, the contribution of those factors to vegetation dynamics at different altitudes was analyzed via an artificial neural network (ANN) model. The results indicated that the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) values in the growing season showed an overall upward trend, with an increased rate of 0.001/year. The values of NDVI in low-altitude areas were higher than that in high-altitude areas, and the peak values of NDVI appeared along the elevation gradient at 4400–4600 m. Thanks to the use of ANN, we were able to detect the relative contribution of various environmental factors; the relative contribution rate of AT to the NDVI dynamic was the most significant (35.17%) in the low-elevation region (<2900 m). In the mid-elevation area (2900–3900 m), precipitation contributed 44.76% of the NDVI dynamics. When the altitude was higher than 3900 m, the relative contribution rates of AT (39.50%) and SM (38.53%) had no significant difference but were significantly higher than that of precipitation (21.97%). The results highlight that the different environmental factors have various contributions to vegetation dynamics at different altitudes, which has important theoretical and practical significance for regulating ecological processes. Changes in climate extremes have a profound impact on vegetation growth. In this study, we employed the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) and a recently published climate extremes dataset (HadEX3) to study the temporal and spatial evolution of vegetation cover, and its responses to climate extremes in the arid region of northwest China (ARNC). Mann-Kendall test, Anomaly analysis, Pearson correlation analysis, Time lag cross-correlation method, and Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator logistic regression (Lasso) were conducted to quantitatively analyze the response characteristics between Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and climate extremes from 2000 to 2018. The results showed that: (1) The vegetation in the ARNC had a fluctuating upward trend, with vegetation significantly increasing in Xinjiang Tianshan, Altai Mountain, and Tarim Basin, and decreasing in the central inland desert. (2) Temperature extremes showed an increasing trend, with extremely high-temperature events increasing and extremely low-temperature events decreasing. Precipitation extremes events also exhibited a slightly increasing trend. (3) NDVI was overall positively correlated with the climate extremes indices (CEIs), although both positive and negative correlations spatially coexisted. (4) The responses of NDVI and climate extremes showed time lag effects and spatial differences in the growing period. (5) Precipitation extremes were closely related to NDVI than temperature extremes according to Lasso modeling results. To forecast the terrestrial carbon cycle and monitor food security, vegetation growth must be accurately predicted; however, current process-based ecosystem and crop-growth models are limited in their effectiveness. This study developed a machine learning model using the extreme gradient boosting method to predict vegetation growth throughout the growing season in China from 2001 to 2018. The model used satellite-derived vegetation data for the first month of each growing season, CO2 concentration, and several meteorological factors as data sources for the explanatory variables. Results showed that the model could reproduce the spatiotemporal distribution of vegetation growth as represented by the satellite-derived normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The predictive error for the growing season NDVI was less than 5% for more than 98% of vegetated areas in China; the model represented seasonal variations in NDVI well. The coefficient of determination (R2) between the monthly observed and predicted NDVI was 0.83, and more than 69% of vegetated areas had an R2 > 0.8. The effectiveness of the model was examined for a severe drought year (2009), and results showed that the model could reproduce the spatiotemporal distribution of NDVI even under extreme conditions. Traditionally, scholars estimated this lag effect by considering the immediate prior lag (e.g., where vegetation in the current month is impacted by the climate in a certain prior month) or the lag accumulation (e.g., where vegetation in the current month is impacted by the last several months). The essence of these two methods is that vegetation growth is impacted by climate conditions in the prior period or several consecutive previous periods, which fails to consider the different impacts coming from each of those prior periods. Therefore, this study proposed a new approach, the weighted time-lag method, in detecting the lag effect of climate conditions coming from different prior periods. Essentially, the new method is a generalized extension of the lag-accumulation method. However, the new method detects how many prior periods need to be considered and, most importantly, the differentiated climate impact on vegetation growth in each of the determined prior periods. We tested the performance of the new method in the Loess Plateau by comparing various lag detection methods by using the linear model between the climate factors and the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). The case study confirmed four main findings: (1) the response of vegetation growth exhibits time lag to both precipitation and temperature; (2) there are apparent differences in the time lag effect detected by various methods, but the weighted time-lag method produced the highest determination coefficient (R2) in the linear model and provided the most specific lag pattern over the determined prior periods; (3) the vegetation growth is most sensitive to climate factors in the current month and the last month in the Loess Plateau but reflects a varied of responses to other prior months; and (4) the impact of temperature on vegetation growth is higher than that of precipitation. The new method provides a much more precise detection of the lag effect of climate change on vegetation growth and makes a smart decision about soil conservation and ecological restoration after severe climate events, such as long-lasting drought or flooding. The Tarim River (TR), the longest inland river at an arid area in China, plays a critical role in the sustainable development of the regional ecological environment. This study presents the spatial-temporal variations in the vegetation coverage at regional and pixel scales and its driving factors on the TR mainstream. The latest dataset of normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and a vegetation coverage index (fc) over the period from 2000–2015 were analyzed with the unary linear regression and the partial correlation. On the basis of land use data, we further built the landscape ecological risk index and assessed the ecological risk level of the mainstream. Our results suggest that the vegetation coverage index demonstrated fluctuations but denoted a generally upward trend in the TR mainstream, the vegetation improvement areas are far greater than the degraded areas during the study period. Apparently, the overflow days in the TR mainstream and the cumulative amount of water transport are the two main factors that dominate the vegetation coverage. The ecological risk level varies throughout the TR with a high-to-low spatial distribution from upstream to downstream, and the overall landscape ecological risk of the whole basin exhibits an upward tendency. Above all, our study provides a framework with the remote sensing data to assess vegetation coverage and landscape ecological risk which can help design and implement reliable strategies for the ecological management and vegetation restoration in the Tarim River Basin. Since other factors (soil properties, topography, etc.) under natural conditions are relatively invariant over one or two decades, climate variables (precipitation and temperature) and human activities are the two fundamental factors driving vegetation changes in global or large-scale areas. However, the combined effects of either single climatic factor and human activities on vegetation changes and the role of human activities itself in a specific region has not been fully discussed. In this study, the Hexi region, a typical dryland consisting of three inland river basins in northwest China was selected as a case area. A new classification framework combining Pearson correlation analysis and residual trend approach was proposed to assess their individual and conjoint contributions of climate variables and human activities in areas of significant vegetation changes. Our results indicated that most of vegetation covered areas in the Hexi region experienced significant changes during the period 2001−2017, and vegetation improvements were widespread except the interior of oases; significant changes in vegetation caused by human activities, precipitation, the interactions of precipitation and human activities, temperature, the interactions of temperature and human activities, the interactions of temperature and precipitation, and the interactions of the three factors accounted for 50.46%, 16.39%, 19.90%, 4.33%, 2.32%, 2.11%, and 4.49% of the total change areas, respectively. Generally, the influence of temperature was relatively weaker than that of precipitation, and the contributions of the interactions of climate variables and human activities on vegetation changes were greater than that of climate contributions alone. Moreover, the results of various investigations, according to the trends and the time of vegetation changes, indicate that decreasing trends of the normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) in the Hexi region were chiefly attributed to the adjustments of agricultural planting structure while the comprehensive treatment programs implemented in river basins supported a large proportion of vegetation improvements. Research on vegetation variation is an important aspect of global warming studies. The quantification of the relationship between vegetation change and climate change has become a central topic and challenge in current global change studies. The source region of the Yellow River (SRYR) is an appropriate area to study global change because of its unique natural conditions and vulnerable terrestrial ecosystem. Therefore, we chose the SRYR for a case study to determine the driving forces behind vegetation variation under global warming. Using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and climate data, we investigated the NDVI variation in the growing season in the region from 1998 to 2016 and its response to climate change based on trend analysis, the Mann–Kendall trend test and partial correlation analysis. Finally, an NDVI–climate mathematical model was built to predict the NDVI trends from 2020 to 2038. The results indicated the following: (1) over the past 19 years, the NDVI showed an increasing trend, with a growth rate of 0.00204/a. There was an upward trend in NDVI over 71.40% of the region. (2) Both the precipitation and temperature in the growing season showed upward trends over the last 19 years. NDVI was positively correlated with precipitation and temperature. The areas with significant relationships with precipitation covered 31.01% of the region, while those with significant relationships with temperature covered 56.40%. The sensitivity of the NDVI to temperature was higher than that to precipitation. Over half (56.58%) of the areas were found to exhibit negative impacts of human activities on the NDVI. (3) According to the simulation, the NDVI will increase slightly over the next 19 years, with a linear tendency of 0.00096/a. From the perspective of spatiotemporal changes, we combined the past and future variations in vegetation, which could adequately reflect the long-term vegetation trends. The results provide a theoretical basis and reference for the sustainable development of the natural environment and a response to vegetation change under the background of climate change in the study area. Actual evapotranspiration (Ea) plays a key role in the global water and energy cycles. The accurate quantification of the impacts of different factors on Ea change can help us better understand the driving mechanisms of Ea in a changing environment. Climate change and vegetation variations are well known as two main factors that have significant impacts on Ea change. Our study used three differential Budyko-type equations to quantify the contributions of climate change and vegetation variations to Ea change. First, in order to establish the relationship between the parameter n, which usually presents the land surface characteristics in the Budyko-type equations, with basic climatic variables and the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), the stepwise linear regression method has been used. Then, elasticity and contribution analyses were performed to quantify the contributions of different numbers of climatic factors and NDVI to Ea change. The North and South Panjiang basin in China was selected to investigate the efficiency of the modified Budyko-type equations and quantify the impacts of climate change and vegetation variations on Ea change. The empirical formal of the parameter n established in this study can be used to simulate the parameter n and Ea for the study area. The results of the elasticity and contribution analyses suggest that climate change contributed (whose average contribution is 149.6%) more to Ea change than vegetation variation (whose average contribution is −49.4%). Precipitation, NDVI and the maximum temperature are the major drivers of Ea change, while the minimum temperature and wind speed contribute the least to Ea change. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vegetation is known to be sensitive to both climate change and anthropogenic disturbance in the karst region. However, the relationship between an abrupt change in vegetation and its driving factors is unclear at multiple timescales. Based on the non-parametric Mann-Kendall test and the ensemble empirical mode decomposition (EEMD) method, the abrupt changes in vegetation and its possible relationships with the driving factors in the karst region of southwest China during 1982–2015 are revealed at multiple timescales. The results showed that: (1) the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) showed an overall increasing trend and had an abrupt change in 2001. After the abrupt change, the greening trend of the NDVI in the east and the browning trend in the west, both changed from insignificant to significant. (2) After the abrupt change, at the 2.5-year time scale, the correlation between the NDVI and temperature changed from insignificantly negative to significantly negative in the west. Over the long-term trend, it changed from significantly negative to significantly positive in the east, but changed from significantly positive to significantly negative in the west. The abrupt change primarily occurred on the long-term trend. (3) After the abrupt change, 1143.32 km2 farmland was converted to forests in the east, and the forest area had significantly increased. (4) At the 2.5-year time scale, the abrupt change in the relationships between the NDVI and climate factors was primarily driven by climate change in the west, especially rising temperatures. Over the long-term trend, it was caused by ecological protection projects in the east, but by rising temperatures in the west. The integration of the abrupt change analysis and multiple timescale analysis help assess the relationship of vegetation changes with climate changes and human activities accurately and comprehensively, and deepen our understanding of the driving mechanism of vegetation changes, which will further provide scientific references for the protection of fragile ecosystems in the karst region.
