Monitoring coastal seabed in very shallow waters (0–5 m) is a challenging methodological issue, even though such data is of major importance to many scientific and technical communities. Over the years, Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry has emerged as a flexible and inexpensive method able to provide both a 3D model and high-resolution imagery of the seabed (~cm level). In this study, we propose a low-cost (about USD 1500), adaptable, lightweight and easily dismantled system called POSEIDON (for Platform Operating in Shallow-water Environment for Imaging and 3D reconstructiON). This prototype combines a floating support (typically a bodyboard), two imagery sensors (here, GoPro® cameras) and an accurate positioning system using Real Time Kinematic GNSS. Validation of this method was deployed in a macrotidal zone, comparing on the foreshore the point cloud provided by POSEIDON "SfM bathymetry" and by classical terrestrial SfM survey. Mean deviation was 5.2 cm and standard deviation was 4.6 cm. Coralline algal beds are comprised of biogenic calcareous formations considered a habitat of high conservation interest, hosting a high great biodiversity. To assess the status of this habitat in the Italian seas, we report results from a systematic analysis of the available scientific literature. Italian rhodolith/maerl beds are reported on 31 Italian sites mostly located around islands, shoals, banks, terraces, and gentley sloping shelves, from 9 m to 130 m water depth (with a mean depth of about 56 m). The dominant species occurring in the Italian submarine sites are Phymatolithon calcareum and Lithothamnion corallioides, with a rich associated fauna including sponges, bryozoans, hydrozoans, polichaetes, molluscs, amphipods, gastropods, echinoderms. Despite the high biodiversity characterizing the Italian rhodolith/maerl beds, only seven submarine sites hosting this sensitive habitat are part of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). This evidence highlights the need for actions focused on the implementation of effective management and proper conservation measures to preserve such precious habitats. Protection of this habitat cannot be effectively provided without access to multidisciplinary data (e.g., geospatial, biological, geophysical, geomorphological data) capable of assessing its spatial distribution and biological characteristics over wide areas. Despite the high accuracy of conventional acoustic hydrographic systems, measurement of the seabed along coastal belts is still a complex problem due to the limitations arising from shallow water. In addition to traditional echo sounders, airborne LiDAR also suffers from high application costs, low efficiency, and limited coverage. On the other hand, remote sensing offers a practical alternative for the extraction of depth information, providing fast, reproducible, low-cost mapping over large areas to optimize and minimize fieldwork. Satellite-derived bathymetry (SDB) techniques have proven to be a promising alternative to supply shallow-water bathymetry data. However, this methodology is still limited since it usually requires in situ observations as control points for multispectral imagery calibration and bathymetric validation. In this context, this paper illustrates the potential for bathymetric derivation conducted entirely from open satellite data, without relying on in situ data collected using traditional methods. The SDB was performed using multispectral images from Sentinel-2 and bathymetric data collected by NASA's ICESat-2 on two areas of relevant interest. To assess outcomes' reliability, bathymetries extracted from ICESat-2 and derived from Sentinel-2 were compared with the updated and reliable data from the BathyDataBase of the Italian Hydrographic Institute. The monitoring of coastal areas using remote sensing techniques is an important issue to determine the bio-optical properties of the water column and the seabed composition. New hyperspectral satellite sensors (e.g., PRISMA, DESIS or EnMap) are developed to periodically observe ecosystems. The uncertainties in the retrieved geophysical products remain a key issue to release reliable data useful for the end-users. In this study, an analytical approach based on Information theory is proposed to investigate the Cramér–Rao lower Bounds (CRB) for the uncertainties in the ocean color parameters. Practically, during the inversion process, an a priori knowledge on the estimated parameters is used since their range of variation is supposed to be known. Here, a Bayesian approach is attempted to handle such a priori knowledge. A Bayesian CRB (BCRB) is derived using the Lee et al. semianalytical radiative transfer model dedicated to shallow waters. Both environmental noise and bio-optical parameters are supposed to be random vectors that follow a Gaussian distibution. The calculation of CRB and BCRB is carried out for two hyperspectral images acquired above the French mediterranean coast. The images were obtained from the recently launched hyperspectral sensors, namely the DESIS sensor (DLR Earth Sensing Imaging Spectrometer, German Aerospace Center), and PRISMA (Precursore IpperSpettrale della Mission Applicativa—ASI, Italian Space Adjency) sensor. The comparison between the usual CRB approach, the proposed BCRB approach and experimental errors obtained for the retrieved bathymetry shows the better ability of the BCRB to determine minimum error bounds. Extended shallow carbonate platform, pelagic, and drift deposits were drilled during International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) Expedition 359 in the Inner Sea of the Maldives. These sediments yield rich and well-diversified benthic, planktonic foraminiferal and nannofossil assemblages spanning from the early Oligocene to the Recent. We present here the shore-based revised integrated biostratigraphy of these microfossil groups at IODP Hole 359-U1468A together with the paleobathymetric reconstruction. Our data suggests the presence of a late Oligocene carbonate platform, marked by the shallowest water depths of the entire sequence of around 80 m. This carbonate platform sequence occurred from around 29 Ma, the extrapolated minimum age estimate, at least up to 27.5 Ma and possibly up to 25.4 Ma. Up the sequence, similar carbonate production conditions occurred until 22.5 Ma across the Oligocene–Miocene transition, equated at 23.04 Ma, with increased water depths >120 m. Notably, in the time interval approximately from 24 to 21.5 Ma, orbitally induced sapropel layers indicate a change of open to restricted circulation. However, at around 22.5 Ma, pelagic deposition at a distal slope occurred with sedimentation rates of 3 cm/years. This initially occurred in water depths of >350 m but gradually reached deposition in water depths of >500 m, which persisted from 21.12 Ma until approximately the extrapolated age of 12.8 Ma. Sedimentation rates gradually increased to 10.5 cm/1000 years at around 450 m below sea floor, marking the initiation of the drift sequence as identified in seismic lines with an age estimate of 12.8 Ma. The initiation of the drift sequence is also marked by a drastic decrease in the preservation of benthic and planktonic foraminifera from good to very poor at around 12.8 Ma. The drift sequence essentially continued to the present day but was interrupted by two events: the deposition of distinct shallow water benthic shoals and a large hiatus. From 12.8 Ma, a shallowing upward bathymetry is suggested by the occurrence of shallow benthic foraminiferal assemblages that close to around 11.93 Ma reached a maximum water depth of 80 m. This shoal then prograded into the basin and persisted at least until 9.89 Ma. Basin conditions with water depths exceeding 500 m were re-established in the upper part of the sedimentary succession after a hiatus spanning approximately from 9.83 Ma to 2.39 Ma, implying that renewed open ocean conditions occurred in the Pliocene–Pleistocene part of the sedimentary record. The receiver hydrophone array is the signal front-end and plays an important role in matched field processing, which usually covers the whole water column from the sea surface to the bottom. Such a large aperture array is very difficult to realize. To solve this problem, an approach called matched field processing based on least squares with a small aperture hydrophone array is proposed, which decomposes the received acoustic fields into depth function matrix and amplitudes of the normal modes at the beginning. Then all the mode amplitudes are estimated using the least squares in the sense of minimum norm, and the amplitudes estimated are used to recalculate the received acoustic fields of the small aperture array, which means the recalculated ones contain more environmental information. In the end, lots of numerical experiments with three small aperture arrays are processed in the classical shallow water, and the performance of matched field passive localization is evaluated. The results show that the proposed method can make the recalculated fields contain more acoustic information of the source, and the performance of matched field passive localization with small aperture array is improved, so the proposed algorithm is proved to be effective. Monitoring chlorophyll-a concentration or turbidity is crucial for understanding and managing oligo- to mesotrophic coastal waters quality. However, mapping bio-optical components from space in such shallow settings remains challenging because of the strong interference of the complex bathymetry and various seabed colors. Correcting the total satellite reflectance signal from the seabed reflectance in ocean color with high resolution sensors is promising. This article shows how unsupervised clustering approaches can be applied to Sentinel-2 images to classify seabed colors in shallow waters of a tropical oligotrophic lagoon in New Caledonia. Data processing included Lyzenga correction for estimating the water column reflectance, optical spectra standardization for attenuating water absorption effects and clustering using the unsupervised k-means method. This methodological approach was applied on the 497, 560, 664 and 704 nm optical bands of the selected Sentinel-2 image. When applied on non-standardized data, our unsupervised classification retrieved three seafloor clusters, whereas five seafloor clusters could be retrieved using standardized data. For each of these two trials, the computed membership values explained more than 75% of the inertia in each Sentinel-2 wavelength band used for the clustering. However, the accuracy of the method was slightly improved when applied on standardized data. Confusion index mapping of the unsupervised clustering retrieved from these data emphasized the relevance and robustness of our methodological approach. Such an approach for seabed colors classification in optically complex shallow settings will be particularly helpful to improve remote sensing of biogeochemical indicators such as chlorophyll-a concentration and turbidity in fragile coastal environments. This study presents a novel method to identify optically deep water using purely spectral approaches. Optically deep waters, where the seabed is too deep for a bottom reflectance signal to be returned, is uninformative for seabed mapping. Furthermore, owing to the attenuation of light in the water column, submerged vegetation at deeper depths is easily confused with optically deep waters, thereby inducing misclassifications that reduce the accuracy of these seabed maps. While bathymetry data could mask out deeper areas, they are not always available or of sufficient spatial resolution for use. Without bathymetry data and based on the coastal aerosol blue green (1-2-3) bands of the Sentinel-2 imagery, this study investigates the use of band ratios and a false colour HSV transformation of both L1C and L2A images to separate optically deep and shallow waters across varying water quality over four tropical and temperate submerged sites: Tanzania, the Bahamas, the Caspian Sea (Kazakhstan) and the Wadden Sea (Denmark and Germany). Two supervised thresholds based on annotated reference data and an unsupervised Otsu threshold were applied. The band ratio group usually featured the best overall accuracies (OA), F1 scores and Matthews correlation coefficients, although the individual band combination might not perform consistently across different sites. Meanwhile, the saturation and hue band yielded close to best performance for the L1C and L2A images, featuring OA of up to 0.93 and 0.98, respectively, and a more consistent behaviour than the individual band ratios. Nonetheless, all these spectral methods are still susceptible to sunglint, the Sentinel-2 parallax effect, turbidity and water colour. Both supervised approaches performed similarly and were superior to the unsupervised Otsu's method—the supervised methods featuring OA were usually over 0.70, while the unsupervised OA were usually under 0.80. In the absence of bathymetry data, this method could effectively remove optically deep water pixels in Sentinel-2 imagery and reduce the issue of dark pixel misclassification, thereby improving the benthic mapping of optically shallow waters and their seascapes. Events of a seismic nature followed by catastrophic floods caused by tsunami waves (the incidence of which has increased in recent decades) have an important impact on the populations of littoral regions. On the coast of Japan and Kamchatka, it takes nearly 20 min for tsunami waves to approach the nearest dry land after an offshore seismic event. This paper addresses an important question of fast simulation of tsunami wave propagation by mapping the algorithms in use in field-programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) with the help of high-level synthesis (HLS). Wave propagation is described by the shallow water system, and for numerical treatment the MacCormack scheme is used. The MacCormack algorithm is a direct difference scheme at a three-point stencil of a "cross" type; it happens to be appropriate for FPGA-based parallel implementation. A specialized calculator was designed. The developed software was tested for precision and performance. Numerical tests computing wave fronts show very good agreement with the available exact solutions (for two particular cases of the sea bed topography) and with the reference code. As the result, it takes just 17.06 s to simulate 1600 s (3200 time steps) of the wave propagation using a 3000 × 3200 computation grid with a VC709 board. The step length of the computational grid was chosen to display the simulation results in sufficient detail along the coastline. At the same time, the size of data arrays should provide their free placement in the memory of FPGA chips. The Global Navigation Satellite System combined with acoustic technique has achieved great economic benefits in positioning of ocean bottom seismometers, with hundreds of underwater transponders attached to seismometers typically being deployed during oil exploration. The previous single transponder positioning method ignored the similar underwater environments between the transponders. Due to the refraction effect of sound, the technique usually showed poor positioning accuracy in shallow water when the incidence angles are large. In this paper, the effect of sound ray bending is analyzed based on the sound ray tracing method in shallow water, and a new piecewise incidence angle model is proposed to improve the positioning accuracy of multiple objects in order to estimate the sound ray bending correction. The parameters of the new model are divided into groups and estimated by sequential least squares method, together with all of the transponders. The observability analysis is discussed in simulation and testing experiments in the South China Sea. The results show that the newly proposed method is able to make full use of the acoustic observation data of hundreds of transponders to accurately estimate the SRB correction, which could also significantly improve the positioning accuracy of multiple transponders. Coastal ecosystems experience multiple anthropogenic and climate change pressures. To monitor the variability of the benthic habitats in shallow waters, the implementation of effective strategies is required to support coastal planning. In this context, high-resolution remote sensing data can be of fundamental importance to generate precise seabed maps in coastal shallow water areas. In this work, satellite and airborne multispectral and hyperspectral imagery were used to map benthic habitats in a complex ecosystem. In it, submerged green aquatic vegetation meadows have low density, are located at depths up to 20 m, and the sea surface is regularly affected by persistent local winds. A robust mapping methodology has been identified after a comprehensive analysis of different corrections, feature extraction, and classification approaches. In particular, atmospheric, sunglint, and water column corrections were tested. In addition, to increase the mapping accuracy, we assessed the use of derived information from rotation transforms, texture parameters, and abundance maps produced by linear unmixing algorithms. Finally, maximum likelihood (ML), spectral angle mapper (SAM), and support vector machine (SVM) classification algorithms were considered at the pixel and object levels. In summary, a complete processing methodology was implemented, and results demonstrate the better performance of SVM but the higher robustness of ML to the nature of information and the number of bands considered. Hyperspectral data increases the overall accuracy with respect to the multispectral bands (4.7% for ML and 9.5% for SVM) but the inclusion of additional features, in general, did not significantly improve the seabed map quality. Marine controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) is an efficient offshore hydrocarbon exploration method that has been developed during the last 18 years. Sea Bed Logging (SBL) and towed streamer electromagnetic (TSEM) are two different data acquisition systems. We compared these two methods by using 1D sensitivity modeling and 2D Occam’s inversion. Based on this research, we tested the effect of frequency, offset range, water depth, reservoir size, and reservoir depth on the detection capability of the two acquisition methods in terms of sensitivity. In order to test the methodology clearly and simply, the geological model was extremely simplified for the inversion. The effect of these parameters on resolution was checked as another purpose. To easily evaluate our inversion results, a simple quantity was employed that we called the anomaly transverse resistance ratio. In the shallow water environment, both the SBL and the TSEM systems had a good sensitivity to the high resistivity targets. However, in the deep water environment, the SBL system had a low noise floor. Then, it could provide better detectability to the deep target. The TSEM had the advantage in terms of the horizontal resolution because of the dense in-line sampling of the electric field. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
