Lost circulation is a pervasive problem in geothermal wells that can create prohibitive costs during drilling. The main issue with treatment is that the mechanism of plug formation is poorly understood. Here we applied two experimental approaches to characterize the clogging effectiveness of different materials. Fracture flow tests with different geometries were conducted with various individual materials and mixtures at relevant conditions. A high-temperature flow loop system was also developed to inject single- and mixed-material plugs into a gravel pack with a non-uniform geometry to compare with the fracture tests. The fracture tests revealed that single materials tended to form no plug or an unstable plug, while mixtures of materials were uniformly better at sealing fractures. Gravel pack tests at high temperatures show most of the materials are intact but degraded. The fibrous materials can create partial or unstable plugs in the gravel pack, but mixed-material plugs are far more effective at clogging. Both test types suggest that (1) mixed materials are more effective at blocking fluid flow and (2) fibrous materials seal fracture openings better, while granular materials seal inside fractures or pore throats better. The thermodynamic analysis of an increasing-pressure endothermic power cycle (IPEPC) integrated with closed-loop geothermal energy extraction (CLGEE) in a geothermal well at a depth from 2 km to 5 km has been carried out in this study. Using CLGEE can avoid some typical problems associated with traditional EGS technology, such as water contamination and seismic-induced risk. Simultaneous optimization has been conducted for the structural parameters of the downhole heat exchanger (DHE), the CO2 mixture working fluid type, and the IPEPC operating parameters. The CO2-R32 mixture has been selected as the optimal working fluid for the IPEPC based on the highest net power output obtained. It has been found that, when the DHE length is 4 km, the thermosiphon effect is capable of compensating for 53.8% of the pump power consumption. As long as the DHE inlet pressure is higher than the critical pressure, a lower DHE inlet pressure results in more power production. The power generation performance of the IPEPC has been compared with that of the organic Rankine cycle (ORC), trans-critical carbon dioxide cycle (t-CO2), and single-flash (SF) systems. The comparison shows that the IPEPC has more net power output than other systems in the case that the DHE length is less than 3 km, along with a DHE outer diameter of 0.155 m. When the DHE outer diameter is increased to 0.22 m, the IPEPC has the highest net power output for the DHE length ranging from 2 km to 5 km. High-temperature (HT) geothermal wells can provide green power 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Under harsh environmental and operational conditions, the long-term durability requirements of such wells require special cementitious composites for well construction. This paper reports a comprehensive assessment of geothermal cement composites in cyclic pressure function laboratory tests and field exposures in an HT geothermal well (300–350 °C), as well as a numerical model to complement the experimental results. Performances of calcium–aluminate cement (CAC)-based composites and calcium-free cement were compared against the reference ordinary Portland cement (OPC)/silica blend. The stability and degradation of the tested materials were characterized by crystalline composition, thermo-gravimetric and elemental analyses, morphological studies, water-fillable porosity, and mechanical property measurements. All CAC-based formulations outperformed the reference blend both in the function and exposure tests. The reference OPC/silica lost its mechanical properties during the 9-month well exposure through extensive HT carbonation, while the properties of the CAC-based blends improved over that period. The Modified Cam-Clay (MCC) plasticity parameters of several HT cement formulations were extracted from triaxial and Brazilian tests and verified against the experimental results of function cyclic tests. The repetitive process of shut-in and production in geothermal wells promotes thermal stress on the wellbore components, including annular cement. A cement sheath at a relatively shallow depth undergoes the most significant stress change due to the high differential temperature between the geothermal gradient and the production fluid's temperature. Understanding the impact of cyclical thermal stresses on cement is critical for assessing the barrier integrity at a shallow depth that serves as aquifer protection. A novel large-scale setup simulating a 1.5 m-long casing-cement-casing well section was built to study the changes in cement's sealing performance of low-enthalpy geothermal wells during production. Using this setup, a cement sheath can be cured similarly to the in situ conditions, and the annular temperature can be cycled under realistic operating conditions. The change in flow rate through the cement sheath before and after cycling is quantified through leak tests. UV dye is injected at the end of the experiment to identify the location and type of damage in the cement sheath. A hydromechanically coupled finite element model was used to estimate the stress evolution in cement during the tests. The model incorporated the impact of cement hydration and strength development during curing. The numerical results were used as a guide to ensure the test design closely mimicked in situ conditions. The results show the presence of a small microannulus immediately after curing due to hydration shrinkage. Thermal cycles reduced the permeability of the microannulus. The size of the micro-annulus was observed to be sensitive to the backpressure applied to the cement sheath, indicating the need for pressure to maintain an open microannulus. Thirty-nine thermal cycles between 80 and 20 °C did not change the permeability of the cement sheath significantly. Tensile cracks in the cement sheath were not continuous and may not be a significant pathway. The new setup allows for measuring cement's effectiveness in withstanding in situ stress conditions when exposed to thermal cycles such as geothermal and CCS wells. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Climate change and the energy crisis forced industrialized countries to contain CO2 emissions and use indigenous renewable energy sources. Geothermal energy undoubtedly has great potential, particularly thermal energy, given that 48% of the final energy consumption in the EU20 countries in 2021 was related to heating and cooling systems. The present study verifies and compares the feasibility of realizing district heating systems in two different contexts: (i) depleted hydrocarbon fields with the repurposing of existing hydrocarbon wells into geothermal wells and (ii) areas with documented geothermal resources. The two selected case studies are located, respectively, near Romentino (Northern Italy, province of Novara) and Tuscania (Central Italy, province of Viterbo). Following an assessment of the geothermal resources in the two selected case studies, specific methodological tools have been developed to evaluate the energy demand in the municipalities and determine the projects' economics. Both case studies show positive economic indices assuming heat tariffs aligned with the values recorded in the 2020–2021 period. However, our results show how reusing hydrocarbon wells in geothermal wells constitutes an excellent opportunity to access geothermal resources, significantly reducing the necessary investment and the mining risk and strongly improving the economics of the projects. Low-enthalpy geothermal wells are considered a sustainable energy source, particularly for district heating in the Netherlands. The cement sheath in these wells experiences thermal cycles. The stability of cement recipes under such conditions is not well understood. In this work, thermal cycling experiments for intermediate- and low-temperature geothermal well cements have been conducted. The samples were cured either under ambient conditions or under realistic pressure and temperature for 7 days. The samples did not show any signs of failure after performing 10 cycles of thermal treatment between 100 °C and 18 °C. We also tested cement formulations under drying conditions. Drying shrinkage is caused by a reduction in the water content of cement, which leads to capillary forces that can damage cement. Such circumstances lead to tensile stresses causing radial cracks. Most samples exhibited cracks under low humidity conditions (drying). Fiber reinforcement, especially using short PP fibers, improved the cement's resilience to temperature and humidity changes. The absence of regional electrical data has constrained our comprehension of the deep geological structures in the Jizhong Depression. This limitation has impeded the exploration of factors and principles governing geothermal reservoirs. Historically, studies on these factors primarily centered on geothermal field attributes, such as anomalous geothermal flux, geothermal gradients, and deep Moho variations. In our research, we undertook an exhaustive interpretation of extended-period magnetotelluric readings. This was amalgamated with prior regional geological and geophysical studies to discern deep geological structural details pertinent to geothermal resource components, encompassing heat sources, pathways, reservoirs, and cap rocks. Our analysis spanned the foundational surface of the Cenozoic era, fault configurations, carbonate formation distribution, and layers with low velocity yet high conductivity. We also statistically evaluated geothermal wells, their density, and the water temperature attributes across various structural entities. This aided in comprehending how structural units influence thermal well features. Our research delineated the spatial interrelation between geothermal well distribution and deep geological structures, including carbonate rock distribution, Cenozoic thickness, fault patterns, and profound low-velocity, high-conductivity layers. Moreover, we scrutinized how structural unit types impact thermal well attributes, offering insights into the formation principles of deep carbonate geothermal reservoirs within the Jizhong Depression. Our findings suggest that the genesis of deep geothermal resources in the Jizhong Depression is swayed by regional geological conditions. Notably, the distribution of regional and especially deep geothermal wells is intimately tied to regional stratigraphy, structural designs, and profound geological structural traits. Furthermore, the temperature within geothermal wells correlates strongly with the burial depth, carbonate formation thickness, Cenozoic thickness, and proximity to fault channels responsible for fluid movement and heat transmission. A model that can be used to quantify silica deposition from superheated depressurized steam is developed. Classical nucleation theory, agglomeration and deposition onto a wall are combined in a numerical model that calculates the concentration profile, the particle size distribution and the deposition in a flow through a pipeline after a sudden increase in supersaturation. The work presented here is an important step in understanding the mechanisms governing precipitation from supercritical and superheated steam as produced by deep geothermal wells drilled in magmatic areas. The power potential in such systems can be significantly higher than for conventional systems if utilized efficiently. The presented results can be applied to improve industrial designs and decrease energy costs. The model predicts the amount of precipitation along a pipe at various supersaturations, and the resulting deposition velocity in a straight pipe correlates fairly well with recent experimental results. There is a high number of nanocolloids formed close to the pressure reduction position, where deposition is at its maximum. Downstream, larger agglomerates develop, and deposition decreases as the number of particles and the overall concentration decreases. The local maximum deposition rate increases with increasing supersaturation. The calculations show that deposition mechanisms are as important as the chemical process of solidification when estimating where and how most material will be deposited. Energy losses can be significantly reduced if thermally insulating cement is used for energy storage and recovery. The thermal conductivity (TC) of the currently used cement is between 1 and 1.2 W/mK. In this study we assessed the ability of polystyrene (PS)–polybutadiene (PB)–polyacrylic acid (PAA) terpolymer (cross-linked styrene–butadiene rubber, XSBR) latex to improve thermal insulating properties and thermal shock (TS) resistance of class G ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and fly ash cenosphere (FCSs) composites in the temperature range of 100–175 °C. The composites autoclaved at 100 °C were subjected to three cycles, one cycle: 175 °C heat → 25 °C water quenching). In hydrothermal and thermal (TS) environments at elevated temperatures in cement slurries the XSBR latex formed acrylic calcium complexes through acid–base reactions, and the number of such complexes increased at higher temperatures due to the XSBR degradation with formation of additional acrylic groups. As a result, these complexes offered the following five advanced properties to the OPC-based composites: (1) enhanced hydrophobicity; (2) decreased water-fillable porosity; (3) reduced TC for water-saturated composites; (4) minimized loss of compressive strength, Young's modulus, and compressive fracture toughness after TS; and (5) abated pozzolanic activity of FCSs, which allowed FCSs to persist as thermal insulators under strongly alkaline conditions of cement slurries. Additionally, XSBR-modified slurries possessed improved workability and decreased slurry density due to the air-entraining effect of latex, which resulted in further improvement of thermal insulation performance of the modified composites. The Hellisheidi geothermal power plant, located in Iceland, is a combined heat and power double-flash geothermal plant with an installed capacity of 303.3 MW of electricity and 133 MW of hot water. This study aimed to elucidate the environmental impacts of the electricity and heat production from this double-flash geothermal power plant. In this vein, firstly, the most updated inventory of the plant was generated, and secondly, a life-cycle assessment approach based on the exergy allocation factor was carried out instead of applying the traditionally used allocations in terms of mass and energy. The functional unit was defined as the production of 1 kWh of electricity and 1 kWh of hot water for district heating. The life-cycle stages included the (i) construction, (ii) operation (including abatement operations and maintenance), and (iii) well closure of the geothermal plant. All of the life-cycle stages from construction to dismantling were considered. Finally, the results on the partitioning of the environmental impact to electricity and heat with exergy allocations showed that most of the impact should be charged to electricity, as expected. Furthermore, the distribution of the environmental impacts among the life-cycle stages determined that the construction stage was the most impactful for the electricity and heat production. This result was attributable to the large consumption of steel that was demanded during the construction of the geothermal power plant (geothermal wells, equipment, and buildings). Impacts due to the abatement stage demonstrated that this stage satisfactorily reduced the total impact attributed to the three life-cycle stages of the geothermal power plant. In China, sandstone geothermal reservoirs are large in scale and widely distributed, but their exploitation is hindered by low recharge efficiency. In this paper, an unblocking and permeability enhancement technology using a rotary water jet for low recharge efficiency wells in sandstone geothermal reservoirs is proposed to solve this problem. This paper presents a series of studies about the proposed technology, including experiments, simulation and field application. Firstly, an experiment was carried out to verify the scale removal effect of a high-pressure water jet on the inner wall of the screen tube and its impact on sandstone. Secondly, the numerical models of the rotary jet flow field in the wellbore were established by ANSYS Fluent to study the influence of parameters. Finally, based on the simulation and experiment results, a rotary jet tool applicable to unblocking and descaling low-efficiency wells was designed, and a field application for low-efficiency wells in sandstone thermal reservoirs was conducted. The study results show that the unblocking and permeability enhancement technology using a rotary water jet is effective in removing the blockages and improving the permeability near the well. In conclusion, the presented technology can solve the problem of low efficiency during the reinjection of cooled thermal waters back into sandstone geothermal reservoirs and has great effectiveness in field application. Asal rift is an aerial rift segment resulting from the westward propagation of the Aden ridge into the Afar Depression. Geothermal manifestations such as hot springs and fumaroles, fault creep, conductivity anomaly, and high geothermal gradient were observed both at the surface and in the subsurface. Despite many scientific works conducted in Asal to understand the rifting mechanisms, the hydrothermal fluid circulation still needs to be evaluated since it is based on simplified conceptual models. To further contribute and progress toward a quantitative evaluation of fluid circulation, a 2D numerical model perpendicular to the rift axis was developed with the objective of better understanding the role of subsurface anisotropy in fluid flow and heat transfer in the Asal rift. Numerical modeling of multiphase flow and heat transfer was carried out with an equivalent porous medium intersected by fault zones having greater permeability. Horizontal anisotropic permeability and magmatic fluid release were taken into account with different simulation scenarios. The results indicate that fault zones act as recharge/discharge areas depending on their location, permeability, and number. Simulations considering horizontal anisotropic permeability allowed the reproduction of the thermal state observed in geothermal wells with the expected general pattern of fluid circulation in the Asal rift. Comparing our result with a recent study made with a 2D numerical modeling parallel to the rift axis, we suggest the presence of a saddle point where fluid flow is both to the northeast and to the southwest direction of the rift. Moreover, magmatic fluid release assumed in two simulation scenarios showed to have an impact on the hydrological behavior of fault zones and facilitate the development of super-critical flow at the center of the rift. It is difficult for the commonly used Class G oil well cement to withstand the high-temperature environment of geothermal wells, and it is easy to deteriorate the mechanical properties and damage the integrity of the cement sheath. Industrial solid waste red mud can be used as supplementary cementing materials (SCMs) to improve its mechanical properties at high temperatures. In addition, compared to Class G oil well cement, high belite cement (HBC) has lower energy consumption and better mechanical properties at high temperatures. In this study, the mechanical properties of HBC as a gel material and quartz sand and red mud as SCMs were studied at high temperatures. The ratio of HBC to SCMs and the ratio of quartz sand to red mud in SCMs were optimized using the response surface method (RSM). The response surface was established using the three-level factorial design model, which fit well with the experimental data. The optimization results show that the best mass ratio of SCMs/HBC is 37.5% and that the best quality ratio of quartz sand/red mud is 9 under the curing conditions of 180 °C. However, the best mass ratio of SCMs/HBC is 49.3%, and the best quality ratio of quartz sand/red mud is 7 under 220 °C. With the addition of SCMs, the silicon-to-calcium ratio of HBC hydration products decreases, and high-temperature-stable xonotlite and tobermorite can be formed. In this paper, the 4E assessment (Energetic, Exergetic, Exergoeconomic and Exergoenvironmental) of a low-temperature ORC activated by two different alternatives is presented. The first alternative (S1) contemplates the activation of the ORC through the recovery of waste heat from a flash–binary geothermal power plant. The second alternative (S2) contemplates the activation of the ORC using direct heat from a geothermal well. For both alternatives, the energetic and exergetic models were established. At the same time, the economic and environmental impact models were developed. Finally, based on the combination of the exergy concepts and the economic and ecological indicators, the exergoeconomic and exergoenvironmental performances of the ORC were obtained. The results show higher economic, exergoeconomic and exergoenvironmental profitability for S1. Besides, for the alternative S1, the ORC cycle has an acceptable economic profitability for a net power of 358.4 kW at a temperature of 110 °C, while for S2, this profitability starts being attractive for a power 2.65 times greater than S1 and with a temperature higher than 135 °C. In conclusion, the above represents an area of opportunity and a considerable advantage for the implementation of the ORC in the recovery of waste heat from flash–binary geothermal power plants. Ordinary Portland cement (OPC) is currently the preferred material for the creation of barriers in wells during their construction and abandonment globally. OPC, however, is a very carbon-intensive material with some inherent technical weaknesses. These include a low casing-to-cement bond strength which may allow for the formation of micro-annuli, which in turn can become a conduit for greenhouse gas transport (primarily of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas) to surface. Alkali-activated materials (AAMs), also known as geopolymers, have a much lower manufacturing carbon footprint than OPC and can be a good alternative to OPC for primary and remedial well cementing applications. This paper reports on a comprehensive study into the use of Class F fly ash-based geopolymers for a large variety of downhole well conditions, ranging from lower-temperature surface and intermediate casing cementing conditions to much higher temperature conditions (up to 204 °C (400 °F)) that can be encountered in high-pressure, high-temperature (HPHT) wells and geothermal wells. The rheological and mechanical properties of alkali-activated fly ash with six different sodium and potassium-based hydroxide and silicate activators were measured and compared to OPC. The results show that geopolymer formulation properties can be tuned to a variety of downhole cementing conditions. With the application of a suitable alkaline activator, geopolymers exhibit good compressive and tensile strength and an outstanding casing-to-cement bond strength of up to 8.8 MPa (1283 psi), which is more than an order of magnitude higher than OPC. This has important implications for preventing the creation of micro-annuli as a result of casing-to-cement interface debonding, thereby preventing the potential leakage of methane to the atmosphere on future wells that use geopolymers rather than OPC for barrier creation. This paper aims to fill the research gap on the effect of steam quality and non-condensable gas on heat-carrying fluid productivity, system performance and optimization. First, the effect of the temperature and quality of the heat-carrying fluid and non-condensable gas (NCG) content on the production parameters was evaluated. After that, three energy conversion systems which included a single flash (SF) system, an organic Rankine cycle (ORC) system and a single flash combined ORC (SFORC) system were constructed in this paper to utilize the heat-carrying two-phase flow with non-condensable gas. Finally, based on thermodynamic modeling, the effects of the temperature and quality of the heat-carrying fluid and non-condensable gas content on the performance and optimization of the three power conversion systems were investigated. The results show that single-phase heat-carrying fluids are more productive than two-phase heat-carrying fluids. NCG is always detrimental. The heat-carrying fluid temperature and quality are positively correlated with system efficiency and negatively correlated with the net power output. In the comparison of comprehensive performances, the SFORC system is the better, and the ORC system and the SF system are the worse. The optimal net power output of the SF system, the ORC system and the SFORC system is 4883 kW, 6557 kW and 7251 kW, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Conventional cements and plugs are challenged by corrosion in CO2-rich and extreme geothermal environments, due to the hostile chemistry and high temperatures. Thermite-based sealing and well intervention technologies are being applied in the oil and gas industry, combining the energy delivery capability of thermite materials with the sealing characteristics of low melt temperature alloys. The thermite reaction products (ceramics) and the sealing alloys used in these plugs both have very attractive corrosion properties, and their operating envelopes extend into geothermal conditions. Thermite plugs and platforms, without supplemental sealing materials, have been considered for nuclear waste isolation, carbon sequestration, and geothermal applications due to the geochemical stability of the ceramic product and its very high service temperature. This study addresses corrosion resistance of the thermite reaction products. A range of engineered thermite systems which yield thermite reaction products including pure aluminum oxide, feldspar, or aluminosilicate solid solutions (in addition to the iron produced in thermite reactions) was developed. These materials were evaluated for their strong acid resistance (pH 1), carbonate resistance (sodium carbonate) and thermal shock resistance (600 °C heating → cold water quenching repeated three times). Performance of different materials was evaluated based on the changes in mechanical properties, water-fillable porosity, phase changes under stress conditions. The aluminosilicate product exhibited very good corrosion resistance, both from material loss and strength perspectives, while the other products performed with varying degrees of stability. This paper presents the results of the thermite corrosion studies and describes the novel tools being deployed, and under development, to satisfy challenging barrier and intervention applications. Hydraulic fracturing (HF) has been used for years to enhance oil and gas production from conventional and unconventional reservoirs. HF in enhanced geothermal systems (EGS) has become increasingly common in recent years. In EGS, hydraulic fracturing creates a geothermal collector in impermeable or low-permeable hot dry rocks. Artificial fracture networks in the collector allow for a continuous flow of fluid in a loop connecting at least two wells (injector and producer). However, it is challenging to assess the fracability of geothermal reservoirs for EGS. Consequently, it is necessary to design a method that considers multiple parameters when evaluating the potential of geothermal development. This study proposes an improved fracability index model (FI) based on the influences of fracability-related geomechanical and petrophysical properties. These include brittle minerals composition, fracture toughness, minimum horizontal in-situ stress, a brittleness index model, and temperature effect to quantify the rock's fracability. The hierarchical analytic framework was designed based on the correlation between the influencing factors and rock fracability. The results of the qualitative and quantitative approaches were integrated into a mathematical evaluation model. The improved fracability index model's reliability was evaluated using well logs and 3D seismic data on low-permeable carbonate geothermal reservoirs and shale gas horizontal wells. The results reveal that the improved FI model effectively demonstrates brittle regions in the low-permeable carbonate geothermal reservoir and long horizontal section of shale reservoir. We divide the rock fracability into three levels: FI > 0.59 (the rock fracability is good); 0.59 > FI > 0.32 (the rock fracability is medium); and FI < 0.32, (the rock fracability is poor). The improved FI model can assist in resolving the uncertainties associated with fracability interpretation in determining the optimum location of perforation clusters for hydraulic fracture initiation and propagation in enhanced geothermal systems. Energy is an essential component for prosperity, economic growth, and development and has become a basic necessity for humans, but at the same time, it has an impact on the environment. Therefore, it is believed that, in the coming future, renewable energy will play an important part in fulfilling the energy demand. In that respect, geothermal energy will be vital as it is a continuous source of energy that is not affected by metrological conditions and can be used in power generation or domestic heating. Many countries around the globe are actively producing energy from geothermal resources. However, the extraction of the heat from the subsurface comes with challenges such as subsurface environment, wellbore instability, corrosion, loss of circulation, and cementing operation. However, one of the most challenging and critical tasks is the zonal isolation of the geothermal well. A packer is a tool that is used for the zonal isolation of a well, and at high pressure and high temperature (HPHT) conditions, which is common for geothermal wells. Most of the components of packers fail, causing well integrity issues. This paper gives a review of the forces acting on packers, testing standards, problems encountered by a packer in the HPHT subsurface environment, and designs to overcome those problems. The spatial distribution of rock fractures during water injection in hot dry rock (HDR) geothermal is essential information for evaluating geothermal well fracturing. The rock fractures produce anisotropic electrical characteristics, which may facilitate geophysical methods for monitoring fracture distribution. This paper studies the anisotropic magnetotelluric (MT) response in water injection fracturing based on the finite difference method (FEM). It uses the residual phase tensor (PT) method to calculate the characteristics of fracture strike and dip angle. The feasibility analysis of the technique under a different angle and resistivity conditions in geothermal reservoir investigation is discussed in detail. The results demonstrate that the MT can explain the characteristics of anisotropic resistivity structure changes from the water injection fracturing of HDR at the 5 km depth. Research on the utilization of the Earth's heat focuses mainly on effective sourcing of energy accumulated in rock mass. One of the most important parameters is thermal conductivity, which can be modified using various compositions of cement grouts. Hardened cement slurry is intended to improve thermal conductivity. It should function as a sort of extension of the rock mass to the outer diameter of heat exchanger tubes. Regardless of the thermal conductivity of the rock, high conductivity of the grout increases the energy efficiency of the BHE. Heat accumulated in the rock mass can be extracted using borehole heat exchangers (BHE), in which high thermal conductivity of cement slurry is wanted over the entire length of the exchanger. Generally, in case of deep borehole heat exchangers (DBHE), it is recommended to use two types of cement slurry, one with reduced thermal conductivity in the upper part of the exchanger and grout with increased thermal conductivity in its lower part. When cementing geothermal wells, cement grout with decreased thermal conductivity along the entire length of the borehole is most commonly used. Geothermal boreholes extract geothermal water which, at the surface, is used for heating, for example. Then, after use, the cooled water is injected through injection holes. In this article, two different basalt dusts are examined. These dusts were obtained by crushing basalt boulders in open-pit mines. They were examined for their effect on thermal conductivity when added to grout. According to the Polish Ordinance of the Minister of Environment dated 9 December 2014 regarding the waste catalogue, they were classified as waste. The materials, named basalt dust A and basalt dust B, were used to create cement slurries with a water–cement ratio of 0.5–0.7 with a wide range of percentage concentration of basalt dust. The test results show that as concentrations in the slurry increase, the values of thermal conductivity and strength decrease. This correlation occurred for both tested additives. During geothermal energy development, the bottom high-temperature fluid continuously exchanges heat with the upper low-temperature wellbore and the stratum during its rising process. Thermal insulation cement (TIC) can increase the outlet temperature, thus effectively reducing the heat loss of the geothermal fluid and improving energy efficiency. In this study, vitrified microbubbles (VMB) were screened out by conducting an orthogonal test of compressive strength (CS) and thermal conductivity (TC) on three inorganic thermal insulation materials (VMB, expanded perlite (EP), and fly-ash cenosphere (FAC)). Fumed silica (FS) was introduced into the cement with VMBs, as its significant decreasing effect on the TC. Moreover, a cement reinforcing agent (RA) and calcium hydroxide [CH] were added to further improve the CS of TIC at 90 °C. The fresh properties, CS, TC, hydration products, pore-size distribution, and the microstructure of the cement were investigated. As a result, a TIC with a TC of 0.1905 W/(m·K) and CS of 5.85 MPa was developed. The main conclusions are as follows: (1) Increasing the mass fraction of the thermal insulation material (TIM) is an effective method to reduce TC. (2) The CH content was reduced, but the C–S–H gel increased as FS content increased due to the pozzolanic reaction of the FS. (3) As the C–S–H gel is the main product of both the hydration and pozzolanic reactions, the matrix of the cement containing 60% FS and VMBs was mainly composed of gel. The magnetotelluric sounding (MT) method is used to detect and study the deep stratigraphic structure and hidden faults in the Shangqiu Uplift. A total of 4 MT profiles are arranged, and 97 stations are collected. The nonlinear conjugate gradient (NLCG) two-dimensional inversion method is used to jointly invert data from both the TE and TM modes after a dimensionality analysis and impedance tensor decomposition; reliable two-dimensional resistivity models are produced since the data quality is excellent. Three-dimensional inversion is carried out to full impedance tensor as well to produce a three-dimensional resistivity model of the study area, which shows good consistency with the two-dimensional models. The results show that the electrical structure of the Shangqiu Uplift has typical layered characteristics, which can be divided into three layers from top to bottom, namely low-, medium-to-high-, and high-resistivity layers. According to the resistivity models and in combination with the gravity, aeromagnetic, seismic, and regional geological data of the study area, a geological map of the basement rock of the Shangqiu Uplift is produced. Two prospective geothermal anomaly areas are proposed according to the distribution of the high-resistivity anomaly formed by the basement uplift, which has a good corresponding relationship with the high-value area of the regional geothermal field. A geothermal exploration well (SR-1) is constructed in one of the inferred prospective geothermal anomaly areas. The well is 1702 m deep, with a water output of 1500 m3/day and a wellhead water temperature of 51.5 °C. This is the geothermal well with the largest water yield in the Shangqiu area at present, which provides a new basis for future geothermal exploration, development, and utilization. Groundwaters circulating in Upper Mesozoic carbonates are of great interest for geothermal heat production and storage applications in the Geneva area. This study aims at providing new insights and proposing new interpretations about the mineral-water reactions and the fluid-flow paths mechanisms across the Geneva Basin (GB). Data from previous studies are combined and improved by new ones collected from cold and hot springs and geothermal exploration wells in 2018 and 2020 in the framework of the GEothermies program and HEATSTORE project. Major ions, trace elements, and the isotopes of Oxygen, Hydrogen, Sulfur, Strontium, and Carbo have been analysed and the results show that the sampled waters have a meteoric origin, the carbonate aquifers act as preferential host rocks for geothermal waters, and partial contribution from the Cenozoic sediments can be observed in some samples. The Jura Mountains and the Saleve Ridge are the main catchment areas and an evolution from a pure Ca-HCO3 footprint for the cold springs, to a Na > Ca-HCO3 and a Na-Cl composutions, is observed at the two geothermal wells. The accurate control of the wellbore pressure not only prevents lost circulation/blowout and fracturing formation by managing the density of the drilling fluid, but also improves productivity by mitigating reservoir damage. Calculating the geothermal pressure of a geothermal well by constant parameters would easily bring big errors, as the changes of physical, rheological and thermal properties of drilling fluids with temperature are neglected. This paper researched the wellbore pressure coupling by calculating the temperature distribution with the existing model, fitting the rule of density of the drilling fluid with the temperature and establishing mathematical models to simulate the wellbore pressures, which are expressed as the variation of Equivalent Circulating Density (ECD) under different conditions. With this method, the temperature and ECDs in the wellbore of the first medium-deep geothermal well, ZK212 Yangyi Geothermal Field in Tibet, were determined, and the sensitivity analysis was simulated by assumed parameters, i.e., the circulating time, flow rate, geothermal gradient, diameters of the wellbore, rheological models and regimes. The results indicated that the geothermal gradient and flow rate were the most influential parameters on the temperature and ECD distribution, and additives added in the drilling fluid should be added carefully as they change the properties of the drilling fluid and induce the redistribution of temperature. In this paper, a two-dimensional (2-D) Finite Element (FE) analysis of a geothermal well was performed with respect to five different cross-sections corresponding to the design specifications for the geothermal well that is currently constructed in Pohang, South Korea. Among the essential components (such as ground formation, casing, and cementing) of a geothermal well, the thermal and mechanical stability of the cementing component was discussed based on a series of parametric studies with consideration of the thermal conductivity and Young's modulus of the cementing component. With increasing number of casing layers, the cementing component experiences less stress concentration. In addition, the lower thermal conductivity of the cementing material is advantageous for effectively controlling radial displacement. Consequently, it should be noted in geothermal well cementing construction that long-term strength degradation of the cementing might cause the severe structural instability of an entire geothermal well. In consideration of the insolubility in water, sensitivity to heat and wide application in the oil and gas industry as a degradable additive, this paper introduces polylactic acid (PLA) to a self-degradable temporary sealing material (SDTSM) to investigate its effect on the SDTSM performance and evaluate its potential to improve the rheological properties and further promote the self-degradation of the material. The thermal degradation of PLA, the rheological properties, compressive strength, hydrated products and water absorption of SDTSMs with different PLA dosages were tested. The analysis showed that the addition of 2% PLA increased the fluidity by 13.18% and reduced the plastic viscosity by 38.04%, when compared to those of the SDTSM without PLA. PLA increased the water absorption of 200 °C-heated SDTSM and had small effect on the types but decreased the hydrate products of 85 °C-cured SDTSM, and created plenty of pores in 200 °C-heated SDTSM. PLA enhanced the self-degradation level of SDTSM by generating a large amount of pores in cement. These pores worked in two ways: one was such a large amount of pores led to a looser microstructure; the other was these pores made the water impregnate the cement more easily, and then made the dissolution of substances in the 200 °C-heated SDTSM progress faster to generate heat and to destruct the microstructure. Deep geothermal heat pump systems have considerable energy saving potential for heating and cooling systems that use stable ground temperature and groundwater as their heat sources. However, deep geothermal systems have several limitations for real applications such as a very high installation cost and a lack of recognition as heating and cooling systems. In this study, we performed a feasibility assessment of a Standing Column Well (SCW) system using a deep geothermal well, based on a real-scale experiment in Korea. The results showed that the temperature of the heat source increased up to 42.04 °C in the borehole after the heating experiment, which is about 30 °C higher than that of normal shallow geothermal wells. Furthermore, the coefficient of performance (COP) of the heat pump during 3 months of operation was 5.8, but the system COP was only 3.6 due to the relatively high electric consumption of the pump. Moreover, the payback period of the system using a deep well for controlled horticulture in a glass greenhouse was calculated as 6 years compared with using a diesel boiler system. The energy industry must change dramatically in order to reduce CO2-emissions and to slow down climate change. Germany, for example, decided to shut down all large nuclear (2022) and fossil thermal power plants by 2038. Power generation will then rely on fluctuating renewables such as wind power and solar. However, thermal power plants will still play a role with respect to waste incineration, biomass, exploitation of geothermal wells, concentrated solar power (CSP), power-to-heat-to-power plants (P2H2P), and of course waste heat recovery (WHR). While the multistage axial turbine has prevailed for the last hundred years in power plants of the several hundred MW class, this architecture is certainly not the appropriate solution for small-scale waste heat recovery below 1 MW or even below 100 kW. Simpler, cost-effective turbo generators are required. Therefore, the authors examine uncommon turbine architectures that are known per se but were abandoned when power plants grew due to their poor efficiency compared to the multistage axial machines. One of these concepts is the so-called Elektra turbine, a velocity compounded radial re-entry turbine. The paper describes the concept of the Elektra turbine in comparison to other turbine concepts, especially other velocity compounded turbines, such as the Curtis type. In the second part, the 1D design and 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) optimization of the 5 kW air turbine demonstrator is explained. Finally, experimentally determined efficiency characteristics of various early versions of the Elektra are presented, compared, and critically discussed regarding the originally defined design approach. This study assessed the possibility of using polymethylhydrosiloxane (PMHS)-treated fly ash cenospheres (FCS) for formulating a thermally insulating and thermal shock (TS)-resistant cementitious blend with calcium aluminate cement. To prevent FCS degradation in an alkaline cement environment at high temperatures, the cenospheres were pre-treated with sodium metasilicate to form silanol and aluminol groups on their surface. These groups participated in a dehydrogenation reaction with the functional ≡Si–H groups within PMHS with the formation of siloxane oxygen-linked M-FCS (M: Al or Si). At high hydrothermal temperatures of 175 and 250 °C, some Si–O–Si and SiCH3 bonds ruptured, causing depolymerization of the polymer at the FCS surface and hydroxylation of the raptured sites with the formation of silanol groups. Repolymerization through self-condensation between the silanol groups followed, resulting in the transformation of siloxane to low crosslinked silicon-like polymer as a repolymerization-induced product (RIP) without carbon. The RIP provided adequate protection of FCS from pozzolanic reactions (PR), which was confirmed by the decline in zeolites as the products of PR of FCS. Cements with PMHS-treated FCS withstood both hydrothermal and thermal temperature of 250 °C in TS tests, and they also showed improved compressive strength, toughness, and water repellency as well as decreased thermal conductivity. There are numerous oil fields that are approaching the end of their lifetime and that have great geothermal potential considering temperature and water cut. On the other hand, the oil industry is facing challenges due to increasingly stringent environmental regulations. An example of this is the case of France where oil extraction will be forbidden starting from the year 2035. Therefore, some oil companies are considering switching from the oil business to investing in geothermal projects conducted on existing oil wells. The proposed methodology and developed conversions present the evaluation of existing geothermal potentials for each oil field in terms of water temperature and flow rate. An additional important aspect is also the spatial distribution of existing oil wells related to the specific oil field. This paper proposes a two-stage clustering approach for grouping similar wells in terms of their temperature properties. Once grouped on a temperature basis, these clusters should be clustered once more with respect to their spatial arrangement in order to optimize the location of production facilities. The outputs regarding production quantities and economic and environmental aspects will provide insight into the optimal scenario for oil-to-water conversion. The scenarios differ in terms of produced energy and technology used. A case study has been developed where the comparison of overall fields and clustered fields is shown, together with the formed scenarios that can further determine the possible conversion of petroleum assets to a geothermal assets. With the growing interest in geothermal energy as a renewable and sustainable energy source, nowadays engineers and researchers are facing technological and environmental challenges during geothermal wells' operation or energy recovery improvement by optimizing surface installations. One of the major problems encountered is the degassing of geothermal brines which are often loaded with dissolved gases, resulting in technical problems (scale formation, corrosion, reduced process efficiency, etc.) and environmental problems through the possible emission of greenhouse gases (CO2, CH4 and water vapor) into the atmosphere. In this work, a method to predict, from readily available information such as temperature and GLR, the bubble point pressure of geothermal fluids as well as the GHG emission rate depending on the surface conditions is presented. This method is based on an extended version of the Soreide and Whitson model with new parameters optimized on the solubility data of several gases (CO2, CH4, N2, O2 and H2) in brine (NaCl + CaCl2 + KCl). The developed approach has been successfully used for the prediction of water content of different gases and their solubilities in different types of brines over a wide temperature and pressure range, and has been applied for the prediction of bubble point pressure and GHG emissions by comparing the results with available industrial data of geothermal power plants including the Upper Rhine Graben sites. Hundreds of geothermal wells have been drilled in Hungary to exploit Pannonian Basin sandstones for district heating, agriculture, and industrial heating projects. Most of these sites suffer from reinjection issues, limiting efficient use of this vast geothermal resource and imposing significant extra costs for the required frequent workovers and maintenance. To better understand the cause of this issue requires details of reservoir rock porosity, permeability, and mineralogy. However, publicly available data for the properties of reservoir rocks at geothermal project sites in Hungary is typically very limited, because these projects often omit or limit data acquisition. Many hydrocarbon wells in the same rocks are more extensively documented, but their core, log, or production data are typically decades old and unavailable in the public domain. Furthermore, because many Pannonian sandstone formations are poorly consolidated, coring was always limited and the collected core often unsuitable for conventional analysis, only small remnant fragments typically being available from legacy hydrocarbon wells. This study aims to reduce this data gap and to showcase methods to derive reservoir properties without using core for flow experiments. The methods are thin-section analysis, XRD analysis and mercury intrusion porosimetry, and X-CT scanning followed by numerical flow simulation. We validate our results using permeability data from conventional production testing, demonstrating the effectiveness of our method for detailed reservoir characterization and to better constrain the lateral variation in reservoir properties across the Pannonian Basin. By eliminating the need for expensive bespoke coring to obtain reservoir properties, such analysis will contribute to reducing the capital cost of developing geothermal energy projects, thus facilitating decarbonization of global energy supply. Geothermal energy can be useful after extraction from geothermal wells, borehole heat exchangers and/or natural sources. Types of geothermal boreholes are geothermal wells (for geothermal water production and injection) and borehole heat exchangers (for heat exchange with the ground without mass transfer). The purpose of geothermal production wells is to harvest the geothermal water present in the aquifer. They often involve a pumping chamber. Geothermal injection wells are used for injecting back the produced geothermal water into the aquifer, having harvested the energy contained within. The paper presents the parameters of geothermal boreholes in Poland (geothermal wells and borehole heat exchangers). The definitions of geothermal boreholes, geothermal wells and borehole heat exchangers were ordered. The dates of construction, depth, purposes, spatial orientation, materials used in the construction of geothermal boreholes for casing pipes, method of water production and type of closure for the boreholes are presented. Additionally, production boreholes are presented along with their efficiency and the temperature of produced water measured at the head. Borehole heat exchangers of different designs are presented in the paper. Only 19 boreholes were created at the Laboratory of Geoenergetics at the Faculty of Drilling, Oil and Gas, AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow; however, it is a globally unique collection of borehole heat exchangers, each of which has a different design for identical geological conditions: heat exchanger pipe configuration, seal/filling and shank spacing are variable. Using these boreholes, the operating parameters for different designs are tested. The laboratory system is also used to provide heat and cold for two university buildings. Simple Summary: Hyperthermophiles grow optimally above 80 °C and include mostly microorganisms belonging to the Archaea domain and are thriving in terrestrial and seafloor geothermal vents as well as in subsurface environments. From an anaerobic hyperthermophilic mixed culture obtained from water produced from a deep and hot oil reservoir we isolated and characterized a starch-degrading strain. Based on phylogenomic analysis, the strain represents a novel hyper-thermophilic species belonging to genus Thermococcus, for which we propose the name Thermococcus bergensis sp. nov. A novel hyperthermophilic archaeon, termed strain T7324T, was isolated from a mixed sulfate-reducing consortium recovered from hot water produced from a deep North Sea oil reservoir. The isolate is a strict anaerobic chemo-organotroph able to utilize yeast extract or starch as a carbon source. The genes for a number of sugar degradation enzymes and glutamate dehydrogenase previously attributed to the sulfate reducing strain of the consortium (Archaeoglobus fulgidus strain 7324) were identified in the nearly completed genome sequence. Sequence analysis of the 16S rRNA gene placed the strain in the Thermococcus genus, but with an average nucleotide identity that is less than 90% to its closest relatives. Phylogenomic treeing reconstructions placed the strain on a distinct lineage clearly separated from other Thermococcus spp. The results indicate that the strain T7324T represents a novel species, for which the name Thermococcus bergensis sp. nov. is proposed. The Xining Basin in Qinghai Province, China, is rich in mid–low temperature geothermal resources, but the reinjection of geothermal water has not yet started. In this paper, the physical properties of rocks sampled from the newly drilled geothermal well DR2018 were analyzed, and a series of core flooding experiments was conducted to assess the formation blockage risk during water reinjection. The experimental results show that the geothermal reservoir has a low porosity of 1.64–18.68% and a low permeability of 0.04–7.23 md. The rocks are weakly consolidated, and the movable clay and sand particles account for 0.18–23.42 wt %, which results in a significant rate and salinity sensitivity. Even at low water flow velocity of 0.31–1.64 cm/min, the core permeability will drop by 35–53% after 25-144PV injection. An obvious fluctuation and decline in core permeability can also be observed as the injected water salinity decreases. The blockage risk induced by the invasion of low-content scaling and suspended particles in injected water can be covered up by the migration of movable particles in cores. The particle migration and blockage in the near-wellbore formation will be the main reason to cause the decline in the well's geothermal reinjection capacity. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lost circulation occurs when the returned fluid is less than what is pumped into the well due to loss of fluid to pores or fractures. A lost-circulation event is a common occurrence in a geothermal well. Typical geothermal reservoirs are often under-pressured and have larger fracture apertures. A severe lost-circulation event is costly and may lead to stuck pipe, well instability, and well abandonment. One typical treatment is adding lost-circulation materials (LCMs) to seal fractures. Conventional LCMs fail to properly seal fractures because their mechanical limit is exceeded at elevated temperatures. In this paper, parametric studies in numerical simulations are conducted to better understand different thermal effects on the sealing mechanisms of LCMs. The computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) and the discrete element method (DEM) are coupled to accurately capture the true physics of sealing by granular materials. Due to computational limits, the traditional Eulerian–Eulerian approach treats solid particles as a group of continuum matter. With the advance of modern computational power, particle bridging is achievable with DEM to track individual particles by modeling their interactive forces between each other. Particle–fluid interactions can be modeled by coupling CFD algorithms. Fracture sealing capability is investigated by studying the effect of four individual properties including fluid viscosity, particle size, friction coefficient, and Young's modulus. A considerable number of rock bodies with varying percentages of supercritical fluid exist around the brittle–ductile transition (BDT) zone at a depth of several kilometers from the surface of the Earth, in northeastern Japan. As the BDT zone in the granitic basement of the continental crust is estimated to occur at about 380 °C, the identification of the depth corresponding to 380 °C is important to utilize the thermal energy inside the "supercritical geothermal systems". In this study, we focused on an estimation method to determine the depth of the isothermal layer corresponding to 380 °C, using the activity index (AI) obtained from the maximum-temperature data of the geothermal wells and hot springs. The thermal profiles of deep and hot exploration boreholes and the hypocentral distribution of natural earthquakes were used to evaluate the characteristics and accuracy of the deep thermal structure, using the activity index. The estimated depth corresponding to 380 °C tended to be higher than the actual depth, with a maximum possible estimation error of approximately 9.7 km. Distribution maps showing the depth of the isothermal layer corresponding to 380 °C were created for six major geothermal fields in northeastern Japan, using the results from this study. The Saudi Arabian Glass Earth Pilot Project is a geophysical exploration program to explore the upper crust of the Kingdom for minerals, groundwater, and geothermal resources as well as strictly academic investigations. The project began with over 8000 km2 of green-field area. Airborne geophysics including electromagnetic (EM), magnetics, and gravity were used to develop several high priority targets for ground follow-up. Based on the results of airborne survey, a spectral induced polarization (SIP) survey was completed over one of the prospective targets. The field data were collected with a distributed array system, which has the potential for strong inductive coupling. This was examined in a synthetic study, and it was determined that with the geometries and conductivities in the field survey, the inductive coupling effect may be visible in the data. In this study, we also confirmed that time domain is vastly superior to frequency domain for avoiding inductive coupling, that measuring decays from 50 ms to 2 s allow discrimination of time constants from 1 ms to 5 s, and the relaxation parameter C is strongly coupled to intrinsic chargeability. We developed a method to fully include all 3D EM effects in the inversion of induced polarization (IP) data. The field SIP data were inverted using the generalized effective-medium theory of induced polarization (GEMTIP) in conjunction with an integral equation-based modeling and inversion methods. These methods can replicate all inductive coupling and EM effects, which removes one significant barrier to inversion of large bandwidth spectral IP data. The results of this inversion were interpreted and compared with results of drill hole set up in the survey area. The drill hole intersected significant mineralization which is currently being further investigated. One potential opportunity for the decarbonisation of heat supply in the UK is the repurposing of onshore hydrocarbon wells for the production and/or storage of geothermal heat. This paper reports an investigation into the most favourable candidate sites for such repurposing, taking into consideration the available thermal energy outputs and technological options for heat use. A GIS mapping model was generated, combining public domain data on onshore wells and production data from onshore fields, provided by the UK Oil and Gas Authority, with available subsurface temperature data. This model has thus integrated information on location, depth, operational status, and bottom-hole temperature for onshore hydrocarbon wells with production rates from onshore fields in the UK. Of the 2242 onshore hydrocarbon wells thus reported, 560 have the potential to be repurposed, 292 of which are currently operating. Using aggregated water production data for all operating wells in each field, the fields with the greatest potential for geothermal repurposing are ranked. Two of these, the Wytch Farm and Wareham fields, are selected for more detailed analysis. Wytch Farm, the largest onshore oilfield in western Europe, produces water at ~65 °C that might yield a feasible thermal power output of ~90 MW. If an end use could be found where it might substitute for burning of natural gas, the value of this output would be ~£90,000 per day or ~£30 million per year. However, this field is located in a protected landscape where local development would be restricted by planning regulations. The Wareham field is not in a protected landscape, but the low temperature, ~44 °C, and low flow rate limit the scope of potential end uses. Nonetheless, these and the other highly ranked fields have potential heat outputs that are significant compared with other geothermal heat projects, thus offering the possibility of making useful contributions to the decarbonisation of UK energy use. The meaningful utilization of artificially created multiple fractures in tight formations is associated with the performance behavior of such flow channels, especially in the case of thermal energy extraction from sedimentary geothermal system. In this study, an innovative idea is presented to develop a numerical model for geothermal energy production based on concrete physical performance of an artificially created tensile multi-fracture system in a simplified manner. The state-of-the-art software FLAC3Dplus-TOUGH2MP-TMVOC are integrated to develop a coupled thermo-hydro-mechanical (THM) fictive model for constructing a multi-fracture scheme and estimating heat extraction performance. By incorporating the actual fracture width of newly created subsequent fracture under the effect of stress shadow, cubic law is implemented for fluid flow and geothermal energy production. The results depict that fracture spacing plays a vital role in the energy contribution through multiple fractures. Afterwards, a field case study to design huge multiple hydraulic fractures was performed in the geothermal well GB X1 in North Germany. The attenuation of fracture propagation becomes more significant when massive multiple fracturing operation is performed especially in the case of lower fracture spacing. Geothermal energy is becoming essential to deal with the catastrophic effect of climate change. Although the totality of the Earth's crust allows the exploitation of shallow geothermal resources, it is important to identify those areas with higher thermal possibilities. In this sense, geophysical prospecting plays a vital role in the recognition and estimation of potential geothermal resources. This research evaluates the geothermal conditions of a certain area located in the center of Spain. The evaluation is mainly based on geological and geophysical studies and, in particular, the Time Domain Electromagnetic Method and the Electrical Resistivity Tomography. Once we analyzed the geology and the historical thermal evidence near the study area, our geophysical results were used to define the geothermal possibilities from a double perspective. In relation to anomalous heat gradient, the identification of a fault and the contact with impermeable granitic materials at the depth of 180 m denotes a potential location for the extraction of groundwater. Regarding the common ground-source heat-pump uses, the analysis has allowed the determination of the most appropriate area for the location of the geothermal well field. The energy reserves in hot dry rock and hydrothermal systems are abundant in China, however, the developed resources are far below the potential estimates due to immature technology of enhanced geothermal system (EGS) and scattered resources of hydrothermal systems. To circumvent these problems and reduce the thermal resistance of rocks, here a shallow depth enhanced geothermal system (SDEGS) is proposed, which can be implemented by fracturing the hydrothermal system. We find that, the service life for SDEGS is 14 years with heat output of 4521.1 kW. To extend service life, the hybrid SDEGS and solar energy heating system is proposed with 10,000 m2 solar collectors installed to store heat into geothermal reservoir. The service life of the hybrid heating system is 35 years with geothermal heat output of 4653.78 kW. The novelty of the present work is that the hybrid heating system can solve the unstable and discontinuous problems of solar energy without building additional back-up sources or seasonal storage equipment, and the geothermal thermal output can be adjusted easily to meet the demand of building thermal loads varying with outside temperature. This work presents a thermoeconomic comparison between two different solar energy technologies, namely the evacuated flat-plate solar collectors and the photovoltaic panels, integrated as auxiliary systems into two renewable polygeneration plants. Both plants produce electricity, heat and cool, and are based on a 6 kWe organic Rankine cycle (ORC), a 17-kW single-stage H2O/LiBr absorption chiller, a geothermal well at 96 °C, a 200 kWt biomass auxiliary heater, a 45.55 kWh lithium-ion battery and a 25 m2 solar field. In both configurations, electric and thermal storage systems are included to mitigate the fluctuations due to the variability of solar radiation. ORC is mainly supplied by the thermal energy produced by the geothermal well. Additional heat is also provided by solar thermal collectors and by a biomass boiler. In an alternative layout, solar thermal collectors are replaced by photovoltaic panels, producing additional electricity with respect to the one produced by the ORC. To reduce ORC condensation temperature and increase the electric efficiency, a ground-cooled condenser is also adopted. All the components included in both plants were accurately simulated in a TRNSYS environment using dynamic models validated versus literature and experimental data. The ORC is modeled by zero-dimensional energy and mass balances written in Engineering Equation Solver and implemented in TRNSYS. The models of both renewable polygeneration plants are applied to a suitable case study, a commercial area near Campi Flegrei (Naples, South Italy), a location well-known for its geothermal sources and good solar availability. The economic results suggest that for this kind of plant, photovoltaic panels show lower pay back periods than evacuated flat-plate solar collectors, 13 years vs 15 years. The adoption of the electric energy storage system leads to an increase of energy-self-sufficiency equal to 42% and 47% for evacuated flat-plate solar collectors and the photovoltaic panels, respectively. Numerical models of geothermal doublet allows us to reduce the high risk associated with the selection of the most effective location of a production well. Furthermore, modeling is a suitable tool to verify possible changes in operational geothermal parameters, which guarantees liveliness of the system. An appropriate selection of software as well as the methodology used to generate numerical models significantly affects the quality of the obtained results. In this paper, the authors discuss the influence of such parameters as grid density and distance between wells on the efficiency of geothermal heating plant. The last stage of the analysis was connected with estimation of geothermal power potential for a hypothetical geothermal doublet. Numerical simulations were carried out using the TOUGH2 code, which applies the finite-difference method. The research was conducted in the Szczecin Trough area (NW Poland), based on archival data from Choszczno IG-1 well. The results demonstrated that in the studied case of the Choszczno region, the changes in the distance of boreholes can have a visible influence on obtained results; however the grid density of the numerical model did not achieve a significant impact on it. The Zagros thrust belt is a large orogenic zone located along the southwest region of Iran. To obtain a better knowledge of this important mountain chain, we elaborated the first 3-D model reproducing the thermal structure of its northwestern part, i.e., the Lurestan arc. This study is based on a 3-D structural model obtained using published geological sections and available information on the depth of the Moho discontinuity. The analytical calculation procedure took into account the temperature variation due to: (1) The re-equilibrated conductive state after thrusting, (2) frictional heating, (3) heat flow density data, and (4) a series of geologically derived constraints. Both geotherms and isotherms were obtained using this analytical methodology. The results pointed out the fundamental control exerted by the main basement fault of the region, i.e., the Main Frontal Thrust (MFT), in governing the thermal structure of the crust, the main parameter being represented by the amount of basement thickening produced by thrusting. This is manifested by more densely spaced isotherms moving from the southwestern foreland toward the inner parts of orogen, as well as in a lateral variation related with an along-strike change from a moderately dipping crustal ramp of the MFT to the NW to a gently dipping crustal ramp to the SE. The complex structural architecture, largely associated with late-stage (Pliocene) thick-skinned thrusting, results in a zone of relatively high geothermal gradient in the easternmost part of the study area. Our thermal model of a large crustal volume, besides providing new insights into the geodynamic processes affecting a major salient of the Zagros thrust belt, may have important implications for seismotectonic analysis in an area recently affected by a Mw = 7.3 earthquake, as well as for geothermal/hydrocarbon exploration in the highly perspective Lurestan region. Power conversion systems based on the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) have been identified as a potential technology especially in converting low-grade renewable sources or waste heat. However, it is necessary to improve efficiency of ORC systems. This paper focuses on use of low geothermal resources (for temperature range of 80–128 °C and mass flow 100 kg/s) by using modified ORC. A modification of conventional binary power plant is conducted by combining gas turbines to increase quality of steam from a geothermal well. An analysis has been conducted for three different working fluids: R245fa, R1233zd(E) and R600. The paper discusses the impact of parameter changes not only on system efficiency but on other performance indicators. The results were compared with a conventional geothermal Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC). Increasing of geothermal steam quality by supplying exhaust gas from a gas turbine to the installation has a positive effect on the system efficiency and power. The highest efficiency of the modified ORC system has been obtained for R1233zd(E) as a working fluid and it reaches values from 12.21% to 19.20% (depending on the temperature of the geothermal brine). The article presents an assessment of the potential for using low enthalpy geothermal resources for electricity generation on the basis of the Małopolskie Voivodeship (southern Poland). Identification the locations providing the best prospects with the highest efficiency and possible gross power output. Thermodynamic calculations of power plants were based on data from several geothermal wells: the Bańska PGP-1, Bańska IG-1, Bańska PGP-3 and Chochołów PIG-1 which are working wells located in one of the best geothermal reservoirs in Poland. As the temperature of geothermal waters from the wells does not exceed 86 °C, considerations include the use of binary technologies—the Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) and Kalina Cycle. The potential gross capacity calculated for existing geothermal wells will not exceed 900 kW for ORC and 1.6 MW for Kalina Cycle. In the case of gross electricity, the total production will not exceed 3.3 GWh/year using the ORC, and will not exceed 6.3 GWh/year for the Kalina Cycle. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
