Electric power systems worldwide are receiving an increasing volume of wind power generation (WPG) because of environmental concerns and cost declines associated with technological innovation. To manage the uncertainty of WPG, a system operator must commit sufficient conventional generators to provide an appropriate reserve. At times, frequent start and stop operations are applied to certain generators, which incurs maintenance costs associated with thermal-mechanical fatigue. In this paper, we suggest a comprehensive approach to unit commitment (UC) that considers maintenance cost: the parameters of equivalent start (ES) and equivalent base load hours (EBHs) are adopted in the UC problem to determine optimal generation scheduling. A new formulation for the maintenance cost that can be readily combined with an existing mixed integer linear programming algorithm is presented. The effectiveness of the proposed UC method is verified through simulations based on an IEEE 118-bus test system. The simulation results show that considering maintenance cost in the UC problem effectively restricts frequent start and stop operation scheduling. Furthermore, the operating cost is reduced, the required reserve level is maintained, and the computational time is comparable with that of the conventional UC method. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With increase in power demand, load demand values have also risen to a greater extent. Sometimes, these demands are met with the great difficulties. All these difficulties drive us to seek other alternative ways. One such a way demand response (DR) is considered in this paper, it is a new concept that is introduced in the system in order to reduce peak hour stresses. When implementing the demand response, the main setbacks that arise is the load kickback effect, which the sudden rise in demand during non-peak hours that is caused by the overuse of power by consumers, after their constant reduction of power during peak hours. This paper discusses the various kickback load types, and an effective approach to avoid and tackle kickback effect, by an effective method Cat Swarm Optimization (CSO), which is based on studying the movement of cats. The development of advanced metering technologies makes demand response (DR) able to provide fast response services, e.g., primary frequency control. It is recognized that DR can contribute to the primary frequency control like thermal generators. This paper proposes a day-ahead scheduling method that considers DR as a frequency control resource, so that the DR resources can be dispatched properly with other resources. In the proposed method, the objective of frequency control is realized by defining a frequency limit equation under a supposed contingency. The frequency response model is used to model the dynamics of system frequency. The nonlinear frequency limit equation is transformed to a linear arithmetic equation by piecewise linearization, so that the problem can be solved by mixed integer linear programming (MILP). The use of appropriate hourly reserve margins can maintain power system security by balancing supply and demand in the presence of errors in the forecast demand, generation outages, or errors in the forecast of wind power generation. Because the cost of unit commitment increases with larger reserve margins, cost analysis to determine the most economical reserve margin is an important issue in power system operation. Here, we define the "short-term reliability of balance" and describe a method to determine the reserve margin based on the short-term reliability of balance. We describe a case study, in which we calculate the reserve margin using this method with various standards of short-term reliability of balance. A cost analysis is then performed to determine the most economic standard, and a comparison between our method and a conventional method is carried out. The results show that our method with an economic short-term reliability of balance enables more reliable and efficient operation of the power system. Moreover, with an hourly reserve margin, we show that an increase in wind power generation can result in a significant decrease in the operating cost, which makes wind power generation economically viable. In this paper, the uncertainty of wind, solar and load; smart charging and discharging of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) to and from various energy sources; and the coordination of wind, solar power, PHEVs and cost-emission are considered in the smart grid unit commitment (UC). First, a multi-scenario simulation is used in which a set of valid scenarios is considered for the uncertainties of wind and solar energy sources and load. Then the UC problem for the set of scenarios is decomposed into the optimization of interactive agents by multi-agent technology. Agents' action is represented by a genetic algorithm with adaptive crossover and mutation operators. The adaptive co-evolution of agents is reached by adaptive cooperative multipliers. Finally, simulation is implemented on an example of a power system containing thermal units, a wind farm, solar power plants and PHEVs. The results show the effectiveness of the proposed method. Thermal units, wind, solar power and PHEVs are mutually complementarily by the adaptive cooperative mechanism. In this paper, a two-stage stochastic unit commitment (UC) model considering flexible scheduling of demand response (DR) is proposed. In the proposed UC model, the DR resources can be scheduled: (1) in the first stage, as resources on a day-ahead basis to integrate the predicted wind fluctuation with lower uncertainty; (2) in the second stage, as resources on an intra-day basis to compensate for the deviation among multiple wind power scenarios considering the coupling relationship of DR on available time and capacity. Simulation results on the Pennsylvania-New Jersey-Maryland (PJM) 5-bus system and IEEE 118-bus system indicate that the proposed model can maximize the DR value with lower cost. Moreover, different types of DR resources may vary in the contract costs (capacity costs), the responsive costs (energy costs), the time of advance notice, and the minimum on-site hours. The responsive cost is considered as the most important factor affecting DR scheduling. In addition, the first-stage DR is dispatched more frequently when transmission constraints congestion occurs. This paper presents an online economic re-dispatch scheme based on the generation cost optimization with security constraints to mitigate line overloads before and after line and generation contingencies. The proposed optimization model considers simplification of mathematical expressions calculated from online variables as the power transfer distribution factor (PTDF) and line outage distribution factor (LODF). Thus, a first algorithm that calculates economic re-dispatch for online operation to avoid overloads during the normal operation and a second algorithm that calculates online emergency economic re-dispatch when overloads occur due to line and generator contingencies are proposed in this paper. The results show that the proposed algorithms avoid overload before and after contingencies, improving power system security, and at the same time reducing operational costs. This study proposes a mixed-integer linear programming (MILP) model to figure out the transmission-constrained direct current (DC)-based unit commitment (UC) problem using the generalized generation distribution factors (GGDF) for modeling the transmission network constraints. The UC problem has been reformulated using these linear distribution factors without sacrificing optimality. Several test power systems (PJM 5-bus, IEEE-24, and 118-bus) have been used to validate the introduced formulation. Results demonstrate that the proposed approach is more compact and less computationally burdensome than the classical DC-based formulation, which is commonly employed in the technical literature to carry out the transmission network constraints. Therefore, there is a potential applicability of the accomplished methodology to carry out the UC problem applied to medium and large-scale electrical power systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
