This study describes the implementation of Internet of Things (IoT) sensors in flow meters installed in drinking water systems and in fog catchers built in low-income, high-altitude communities in the Andes region of Ecuador, taking studies at the University de las Fuerzas Armadas ESPE as our reference. The influence and management of these intelligent sensors are analyzed, as well as a basic review of the materials and methods used in their implementation. The importance of validating the accuracy and reliability of IoT sensors compared to professional devices is highlighted, especially in mountain areas with difficult access. Additionally, the cost–benefit of using IoT sensors in fog catchers and drinking water distribution networks is mentioned, which depends on several factors such as the scale of the project, the objectives to be achieved concerning monitoring, and the available resources. Finally, it is highlighted that using Internet of Things (IoT) sensors in construction and water collection systems has proven beneficial in detecting possible effects on its operation and determining consumption and supply flows for a given population. Increasing awareness of the structure of microtubules has made tubulin a relevant target for the research of novel chemotherapies. Furthermore, the particularly high sensitivity of glioblastoma multiforme (GBM) cells to microtubule disruption could open new doors in the search for new anti-GBM treatments. However, the difficulties in developing potent anti-tubulin drugs endowed with improved pharmacokinetic properties necessitates the expansion of medicinal chemistry campaigns. The application of an ensemble pharmacophore screening methodology helped to optimize this process, leading to the development of a new tetrazole-based tubulin inhibitor. Considering this scaffold, we have synthesized a new family of tetrazole derivatives that achieved remarkable antimitotic effects against a broad panel of cancer cells, especially against GBM cells, showing high selectivity in comparison with non-tumor cells. The compounds also exerted high aqueous solubility and were demonstrated to not be substrates of efflux pumps, thus overcoming the main limitations that are usually associated with tubulin binding agents. Tubulin polymerization assays, immunofluorescence experiments, and flow cytometry studies demonstrated that the compounds target tubulin and arrest cells at the G2/M phase followed by induction of apoptosis. Targeted therapy against cancer plays a key role in delivering safer and more efficient treatments. In the last decades, ion channels have been studied for their participation in oncogenic processes because their aberrant expression and/or function have been associated with different types of malignancies, including ovarian, cervical, and endometrial cancer. The altered expression or function of several ion channels have been associated with tumor aggressiveness, increased proliferation, migration, invasion, and metastasis of cancer cells and with poor prognosis in gynecological cancer patients. Most ion channels are integral membrane proteins easily accessible by drugs. Interestingly, a plethora of ion channel blockers have demonstrated anticancer activity. Consequently, some ion channels have been proposed as oncogenes, cancer, and prognostic biomarkers, as well as therapeutic targets in gynecological cancers. Here, we review the association of ion channels with the properties of cancer cells in these tumors, which makes them very promising candidates to be exploited in personalized medicine. The human papilloma virus (HPV) group comprises approximately 200 genetic types that have a special affinity for epithelial tissues and can vary from producing benign symptoms to developing into complicated pathologies, such as cancer. The HPV replicative cycle affects various cellular and molecular processes, including DNA insertions and methylation and relevant pathways related to pRb and p53, as well as ion channel expression or function. Ion channels are responsible for the flow of ions across cell membranes and play very important roles in human physiology, including the regulation of ion homeostasis, electrical excitability, and cell signaling. However, when ion channel function or expression is altered, the channels can trigger a wide range of channelopathies, including cancer. In consequence, the up- or down-regulation of ion channels in cancer makes them attractive molecular markers for the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of the disease. Interestingly, the activity or expression of several ion channels is dysregulated in HPV-associated cancers. Here, we review the status of ion channels and their regulation in HPV-associated cancers and discuss the potential molecular mechanisms involved. Understanding the dynamics of ion channels in these cancers should help to improve early diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment in the benefit of HPV-associated cancer patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This article focuses on the development of a system based on the long-range network (LoRa), which is used for monitoring the agricultural sector and is implemented in areas of the Andean region of Ecuador. The LoRa network is applied for the analysis of climatic parameters by monitoring temperature, relative humidity, soil moisture and ultraviolet radiation. It consists of two transmitter nodes and one receiver node, a LoRa Gateway with two communication channels for data reception and one for data transmission, and an IoT server. In addition, a graphical user interface has been developed in Thinger.io to monitor the crops and remotely control the actuators. The research conducted contains useful information for the deployment of a LoRa network in agricultural crops located in mountainous areas above 2910 m.a.s.l., where there are terrains with irregular orography, reaching a coverage of 50 hectares and a range distance of 875 m to the farthest point in the community of Chirinche Bajo, Ecuador. An average RSSI of the radio link of −122 dBm was obtained in areas with a 15% slope and 130 m difference in height according to the Gateway, where the presence of vegetation, eucalyptus trees and no line-of-sight generated interference to the radio signal. The success rate of PDR packet delivery with an SF of nine, had a better performance, with values of no less than 76% and 92% in uplink and downlink respectively. Finally, the technological gap is reduced, since the network reaches places where traditional technologies do not exist, allowing farmers to make timely decisions in the production process in the face of adverse weather events. In this study, electro-oxidation (EOx) and in situ generation of ferrate ions [Fe(VI)] were tested to treat water contaminated with Blue BR dye (BBR) using a boron-doped diamond (BDD) anode. Two electrolytic media (0.1 M HClO4 and 0.05 M Na2SO4) were evaluated for the BDD, which simultaneously produced oxygen radicals (•OH) and [Fe(VI)]. The generation of [Fe(VI)] was characterized by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and the effect of different current intensity values (e.g., 7 mA cm−2, 15 mA cm−2, and 30 mA cm−2) was assessed during BBR degradation tests. The discoloration of BBR was followed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry. When the EOx process was used alone, only 78% BBR discoloration was achieved. The best electrochemical discoloration conditions were found using 0.05 M Na2SO4 and 30 mA cm−2. Using these conditions, overall BBR discoloration values up to 98%, 95%, and 87% with 12 mM, 6 mM, and 1 mM of FeSO4, respectively, were achieved. In the case of chemical oxygen demand (COD) reduction, the EOx process showed only a 37% COD reduction, whereas combining [Fe(VI)] generation using 12 mM of FeSO4 achieved an up to 61% COD reduction after 90 min.
