The mining industry, critical for global resource supply, has historically been linked to significant environmental degradation and social challenges, including habitat disruption, water and soil contamination, as well as fatalities. But recently, the industry has been undergoing a transformative change to meet evolving environmental and societal expectations. Operations Research (OR) provides essential tools and techniques to optimize decision-making processes in this context. This paper presents a comprehensive review of different OR methods and their applications in balancing economic, social, and environmental objectives in surface mine planning. Of the 63 papers reviewed, 45 were published by researchers from three main countries: Canada, the United States, and Australia, with 73% of these papers appearing in journals. This review highlighted that linear programming (LP), dynamic programming (DP), Lagrangian relaxation (LR), stochastic programming, and metaheuristics are among the most widely applied methods in surface mine planning within a sustainable development (SD) context. By evaluating the strengths and limitations of these techniques, this review offers valuable insights for researchers and practitioners aiming to improve production efficiency and sustainability through advanced planning strategies. This review addresses the ongoing global challenge posed by emerging and evolving viral diseases, underscoring the need for innovative vaccine development strategies. It focuses on the modern approaches to creating vaccines based on recombinant proteins produced in different expression systems, including bacteria, yeast, plants, insects, and mammals. This review analyses the advantages, limitations, and applications of these expression systems for producing vaccine antigens, as well as strategies for designing safer, more effective, and potentially 'universal' antigens. The review discusses the development of vaccines for a range of viral diseases, excluding SARS-CoV-2, which has already been extensively studied. Pseudomonas aeruginosa is a pathogen of critical priority importance according to the WHO. Due to its multi-resistance and expression of various virulence factors, it is the causal agent of severe healthcare-acquired infections (HAIs). Effective strategies to control infections caused by P. aeruginosa must include early and specific detection of the pathogen for early and timely antibiotic prescription. The need to develop a specific and reproducible diagnostic technique is urgent, which must often be more sensitive and faster than current clinical diagnostic methods. In this study, we implement and standardize the loop-mediated isothermal amplification (LAMP) technique, coupled with the reverse line blot hybridization (RLBH) technique for the detection of P. aeruginosa. A set of primers and probes was designed to amplify a specific region of the P. aeruginosa 16s rRNA gene. The sensitivity of the LAMP-RLBH method was 3 × 10−4 ng/μL, 1000 times more sensitive than the PCR and LAMP technique (this work), with a sensitivity of 3 × 10−3 ng/μL. The LAMP-RLBH and LAMP techniques showed specific amplification and no cross-reaction with members of the ESKAPE group and other Pseudomonas species. The present investigation provides a technique that can be easily performed in less time, achieving a faster and more reliable alternative compared to traditional microbial diagnostic methods for the detection of P. aeruginosa. Background: The rarity and variability of MEN1-related primary hyperparathyroidism (mPHPT) has led to contradictory data regarding the bone phenotype in this patient population. Methods: A single-center retrospective study was conducted among young age- and sex-matched patients with mPHPT and sporadic hyperparathyroidism (sPHPT). The main parameters of calcium–phosphorus metabolism, bone remodeling markers, and bone mineral density (BMD) measurements were obtained during the active phase of hyperparathyroidism before parathyroidectomy (PTE) and 1 year after. Trabecular Bone Score (TBS) and 3D-DXA analysis of the proximal femur were used to evaluate the differences in bone architecture disruption between groups. Results: Patients with mPHPT had significant lower preoperative BMD compared to sPHPT at lumbar spine—LS (p = 0.002); femur neck—FN (p = 0.001); and total hip—TH (p = 0.002). 3D-DXA analysis showed the prevalence of cortical rather than trabecular bone damage in mPHPT compared to sPHPT: cortical thickness (p < 0.001); cortical surface BMD (p = 0.001); cortical volumetric BMD (p = 0.007); and trabecular volumetric BMD (p = 0.029). One year after, PTE DXA and 3D-DXA parameters were similar between groups, while 3D-visualisation showed more extensive regeneration in cortical sBMD and cortical thickness in mPHPT. Conclusions: mPHPT is associated with lower preoperative BMD values with predominant architecture disruption in the cortical bone. The absence of differences in DXA and 3D-DXA parameters 1 year after PTE between mPHPT/sPHPT combined with significantly lower BMD in mPHPT at the initial stage may indicate faster bone recovery after surgery in mPHPT than in sPHPT. Background: Lung cancer, including the major subtype lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD), is the leading cause of cancer deaths worldwide, largely due to metastasis. Improving survival rates requires new treatment strategies and a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that drive tumor progression within the tumor microenvironment (TME). This study investigated the impact of extracellular vesicles (EVs) derived from LUAD cells on lung fibroblasts. Methods: EVs were isolated from LUAD cell lines via ultracentrifugation and characterized using nanoparticle tracking analysis and Western blotting. Lung fibroblasts were treated with PBS, TGFβ, or EVs, and their activation was assessed through protein (Western blotting) and RNA analyses (RNA seq and RT-qPCR). Results: The results confirmed the TGFβ induced activation and showed that LUAD EVs could also activate fibroblasts, increasing cancer-associated fibroblast (CAF) markers. While EV-induced CAF activation displayed unique features, like an increase in proliferation-related genes, the EV and TGFβ treatments also shared some differentially expressed genes. The EV groups induced a higher expression of ECM remodeling and EMT-associated genes, but some of those genes were also upregulated in the TGFβ group. Mesenchymal genes POSTN and SPOCK1 were significantly upregulated in TGFβ- and EV-treated fibroblasts. Their secretion as proteins from the TGFβ- and EV-induced CAFs was not significant, confirmed through ELISA. Conclusions: These findings suggest that LUAD EVs play a role in CAF activation through both shared and distinct pathways compared to canonical TGFβ activation, potentially identifying novel gene expressions involved in CAF activation. The natural polyphenol resveratrol is a biologically active compound that interacts with DNA and affects the activity of some nuclear enzymes. Its effect on the interaction between nucleosomes and poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase-1 (PARP1) and on the catalytic activity of PARP1 was studied using Western blotting, spectrophotometry, electrophoretic mobility shift assay, and single particle Förster resonance energy transfer microscopy. Resveratrol inhibited PARP1 activity at micro- and sub-micromolar concentrations, but the inhibitory effect decreased at higher concentrations due to the aggregation of the polyphenol. The inhibition of PARP1 by resveratrol was accompanied by its binding to the enzyme catalytic center and a subsequent decrease in PARP1 affinity to nucleosomal DNA. Concurrent binding of talazoparib to the substrate binding pocket of PARP1, which occurs in the presence of resveratrol, restores the interaction of PARP1 with nucleosomes, suggesting that the binding sites of resveratrol and talazoparib overlap. The issue of forming a reliable and stable structure of a crumb-rubber-modified binder is an important scientific and technical task. The authors supplemented existing concepts of the mechanism of effective interaction with rubber crumb by introducing a preliminary first stage: controlled partial physical destruction of rubber crumb—producing rubber reclaim. Proposed physical methods of rubber crumb destruction include high shear force (roll mills), high temperature, and a plasticizing medium. The controllability and degree of devulcanization of rubber were determined by acetone-chloroform extraction in different time intervals. The degree of devulcanization of rubber in the rubber reclaim was found to be 22 ± 0.24%, with stability over 14 days. It was found that the size of the particles of the rubber reclaim in the bitumen is less than 2 µm. The properties of the structure of the binder modified with rubber reclaim, characterizing the stability and sustainability, have been studied and established. The developed modified binders are stable in storage. Rheological parameters of the structure characterizing intermolecular interaction, such as shear stability for original and RTFOT-aged, modified bitumen, meet requirements of the state standard at test temperature 64 °C. The elastic structural component of the crumb-rubber-modified binder, as indicated by the relative irreversible deformation parameter J3,2, does not exceed 2.6 kPa (<4.5 kPa) at 64 °C. Additionally, it was determined that the rheological structural parameter for fatigue resistance, which characterizes the durability of road pavement under intensive operational conditions, does not exceed 4699 kPa (<5000 kPa) at 16 °C. The use of 10% rubber reclaim combined with waste frying oil provided the opportunity to obtain a modified binder with a stable and sustainable structure without the introduction of additional stabilizers and agents. Environment plastic accumulation has been attracting the attention of both political and scientific communities, who wish to reduce global pollution. Plastic items have been detected everywhere, from oceans to the air, raising concerns about the fate of plastics within organisms. Leaked plastics are ingested by animals, entering the food chain and eventually reaching humans. Although a lot of studies focused on the evaluation of plastic particles in the environment and living organisms have already been published, the behavior of plastic at the cellular level is still missing. Here, we analyzed the bioaccumulation and extrusion trend of two differently sized plastic particles (1 and 2 µm), testing them on three human epithelial cell lines (liver, lung, and gut) that represent epithelial sites mainly exposed to plastic. A different behavior was detected, and the major plastic uptake was shown by liver cells, where the 1 µm beads accumulated with a dose-dependent profile. Moreover, a 60% reduction in the content of 1 µm particles in cells was evaluated after plastic removal. Finally, the viability and proliferation of the three human cell lines were not significantly affected by both the 1 and 2 µm beads, suggesting that cells might have a defense mechanism against plastic exposure risk. Objective: Preoperative negative affect is a risk factor for worse postoperative pain, but research investigating this association among patients undergoing thoracic surgery is inconsistent. Additionally, female patients often report greater negative affect and postoperative pain than males. This prospective observational study investigated the association between preoperative negative affect and postoperative pain after thoracic surgery and whether this association differed by sex. Methods: Patients (n = 105) undergoing thoracic surgery completed preoperative assessments of pain and negative affect (PROMIS anxiety and depression short forms). Patients reported their daily worst pain over the first 7 postoperative days, and an index score of acute postoperative pain was created. Six months after surgery, a subsample of patients (n = 60) reported their worst pain. Results: Higher levels of preoperative anxiety (r = 0.25, p = 0.011) and depression (r = 0.20, p = 0.042) were associated with greater acute postoperative pain, but preoperative negative affect was not related to chronic postsurgical pain (anxiety: r = 0.19, p = 0.16; depression: r = −0.01, p = 0.94). Moderation analyses revealed that the associations between both preoperative anxiety (b = 0.12, 95% CI [0.04, 0.21], p = 0.004) and depression (b = 0.15, 95% CI [0.04, 0.26], p = 0.008) with acute postoperative pain were stronger among females than males. Similarly, the association between preoperative anxiety and chronic postsurgical pain was stronger among females (b = 0.11, 95% CI [0.02, 0.20], p = 0.022), but the association between preoperative depression and chronic pain did not differ based on sex (b = 0.13, 95% CI [−0.07, 0.34], p = 0.201]). Conclusions: Our findings suggest that negative affect may be especially important to the experience of pain following thoracic surgery among female patients, whose degree of preoperative anxiety may indicate vulnerability to progress to a chronic pain state. Background: Acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF) is a condition with a high frequency of hospitalizations and mortality, and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common comorbidity. Continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy at home can be a good adjunctive non-drug therapy for these patients. Methods: We conducted a single-center, prospective cohort study from 150 consecutive patients hospitalized for heart failure exacerbation in the cardiology department. Of these, 57 patients had obstructive sleep apnea. After discharge, CPAP therapy at home was offered. We divided them into two groups and followed them for 1 year. All patients received optimal medical treatment. At the end of the period, patients underwent a follow-up physical examination, a follow-up echocardiography, and a follow-up evaluation of the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS). Results: From 81 patients with sleep apnea, 72.8% (n = 59) had obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and 27.2% (n = 22) had central sleep apnea (CSA). There was a statistically significant difference in body mass index (BMI), ESS, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF%) in the group with CPAP therapy compared to the no-CPAP group. The CPAP group had a median survival of 11.7 months vs. 10.1 months in the no-CPAP group (log-rank (Mantel–Cox) p = 0.044). Conclusions: This study suggests that obstructive sleep apnea is a common comorbidity in patients with acute decompensated heart failure. Experimental methods of single-molecule enzymology allow scientists to determine physicochemical properties of distinct single molecules of various enzymes and to perform direct monitoring of functioning of enzymes at different steps of their catalytic cycle. The approach based on the use of solid-state nanopores is a promising tool for studying the functioning of single-enzyme molecules. Herein, this approach is employed for monitoring the functioning of cytochrome P450 BM3, which represents a very convenient model of cytochrome P450-containing monooxygenase systems. A nanopore of ~5 nm in diameter has been formed in a 40 nm-thick silicon nitride chip by electron beam drilling (EBD), and a single molecule of the BM3 enzyme has been entrapped in the pore. The functioning of the enzyme molecule has been monitored by recording the time dependence of the ion current through the nanopore during the reaction of laurate hydroxylation. In our experiments, the enzyme molecule has been found to be active for 1500 s. The issue of forming a reliable and sustainable structure of crumb-rubber-modified binder is an important scientific and technical task. The quality of this task will increase the technical and economic efficiencies of road construction materials. This work is dedicated to developing a scientifically justified method of directed thermomechanical devulcanization, which ensures the solubility of the crumb rubber in the complex structure of a polydisperse composite material, preventing the formation of aggregates consisting of unsaturated crumb rubber particles, whose elastic aftereffect causes intensive cracking, especially during low-temperature road operations. The novelty in the first part of this article is due to the fact that, for the first time, the quantitative ratio of the polymer component in the crumb rubber was experimentally determined. The ratio of the polymer component to the total content of the other rubber components in the crumb rubber (CR) was determined to be, on average, 93.3 ± 1.8%. The stabilities of the compositions of crumb rubber from different batches were experimentally studied. The nature of the polymer component in the crumb rubber was determined. A hypothesis was formulated to obtain a thermodynamically stable and sustainable binder modified with crumb rubber. To evaluate the compatibility of hydrocarbon plasticizers with the studied CR samples, the following semi-empirical and thermodynamic compatibility parameters were calculated: Hildebrand solubility parameters based on evaporation energy and surface tension, Barstein's compatibility parameter |X|, Traxler coefficient, and the mass ratio of paraffin naphthene:asphaltenes. It was shown that for the substances under study, it is advisable to justify the choice of plasticizer based on chemical compatibility criteria. It was established that a supramolecular plasticization mechanism occurs in the "hydrocarbon plasticizer–crumb rubber" systems under consideration. In the development of the crumb-rubber-modified binder, it was found that the use of activated crumb rubber (ACR) from large tires does not ensure the achievement of a stable and resilient structure of the crumb-rubber-modified bitumen. Microbial colonization of plastic polymers in Antarctic environments is an under-investigated issue. While several studies are documenting the spread of plastic pollution in the Ross Sea, whether the formation of a plastisphere (namely the complex microbial assemblage colonizing plastics) may favor the spread of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB) in this marine environment is unknown yet. A colonization experiment was performed in this ecosystem, aiming at exploring the potential role of plastic polymers as a reservoir of antibiotic resistance. To this end, the biofilm-producing activity and the antibiotic susceptibility profiles of bacterial strains isolated from biofilms colonizing submerged polyvinylchloride and polyethylene panels were screened. The colonization experiment was carried out at two different sites of the Ross Sea, namely Road Bay and Tethys Bay. Most of bacterial isolates were able to produce biofilm; several multidrug resistances were detected in the bacterial members of biofilms associated to PVC and PE (also named as the plastisphere), as well as in the bacterial strains isolated from the surrounding water. The lowest percentage of ARB was found in the PE-associated plastisphere from the not-impacted (control) Punta Stocchino station, whereas the highest one was detected in the PVC-associated plastisphere from the Tethys Bay station. However, no selective enrichment of ARB in relation to the study sites or to either type of plastic material was observed, suggesting that resistance to antibiotics was a generalized widespread phenomenon. Resistance against to all the three classes of antibiotics assayed in this study (i.e., cell wall antibiotics, nucleic acids, and protein synthesis inhibitors) was observed. The high percentage of bacterial isolates showing resistance in remote environments like Antarctic ones, suffering increasing anthropic pressure, points out an emerging threat with a potential pathogenic risk that needs further deepening studies. Breast cancer (BC) represents the most prevalent cancer in women at any age after puberty. From a pathogenetic prospective, despite a wide array of risk factors being identified thus far, poor metabolic health is emerging as a putative risk factor for BC. In particular, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) provides a perfect example bridging the gap between poor metabolic health and BC risk. Indeed, T2DM is preceded by a status of hyperinsulinemia and is characterised by hyperglycaemia, with both factors representing potential contributors to BC onset and progression. Additionally, the aberrant secretome of the dysfunctional, hypertrophic adipocytes, typical of obesity, characterised by pro-inflammatory mediators, is a shared pathogenetic factor between T2DM and BC. In this review, we provide an overview on the effects of hyperglycaemia and hyperinsulinemia, hallmarks of type 2 diabetes mellitus, on breast cancer risk, progression, treatment and prognosis. Furthermore, we dissect the role of the adipose-tissue-secreted adipokines as additional players in the pathogenesis of BC. Finally, we focus on microalgae as a novel superfood and a source of nutraceuticals able to mitigate BC risk by improving metabolic health and targeting cellular pathways, which are disrupted in the context of T2DM and obesity. Here, we review the functioning and importance of deltaic coastal systems in the northern and southern Gulf of Mexico and how petroleum activities have impacted these two important systems. The Mississippi and Usumacinta-Grijalva Deltas are areas of high biological productivity and biodiversity that support the two largest fisheries in the Gulf. The north central Gulf receives inflow from the Mississippi river, the largest discharge in North America. The Mississippi Delta covers about 10,000 km2. The Usumacinta-Grijalva River is the second highest freshwater input to the Gulf and discharges to the Usumacinta-Grijalva/Laguna de Terminos deltaic complex. These two areas are the largest petroleum producing regions in the Gulf, involving both inshore and offshore production. Petroleum activities impact coastal ecosystems in two important ways. In inshore areas dominated by coastal wetlands, there has been enormous physical disruption of the natural environment that affected hydrology and system functioning. In both inshore and offshore areas, spilled oil and release of high salinity produced water has led to widespread toxic pollution. Documentation of petroleum activity impacts on coastal marine ecosystems is much more advanced in the Mississippi Delta. Here, we describe how petroleum production impacts coastal ecosystems and discuss how restoration and management can restore the functioning of impacted coastal ecosystems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this research, we investigated the observed spectra of the hot peculiar star HD25354 with an effective temperature T eff = 12,800 K, identified the lines of radioactive chemical elements, including the elements with short decay time, and estimated the abundances of these elements. We tried to confirm or reject the existence of promethium lines and lines of other radioactive elements which were detected in previous investigations of this star and explain the physical mechanisms which are responsible for the synthesis of these elements in the stellar atmosphere. We used two high-dispersion spectra of HD25354 observed with the 2 m telescope of Terskol observatory with resolving power near R = 60,000, and a signal to noise ratio near 200. The spectrum of the star from the archive of the 1.93 m telescope of Haute-Provence observatory was also used. The observations were compared with synthetic spectra and the abundance of promethium was found using the best four lines of this element in the observed spectra: log N (Pm) = 5.84 ± 0.16 in the scale logN(H) = 12. It is comparable to the abundances of stable lanthanides in the atmosphere of this star. The abundance of thorium derived from two lines of double-ionized thorium is log N (Th) = 3.59 ± 0.15. The upper limits for technetium, radium, actinium, uranium, and americium abundances are found to be equal to 4.0, 3.0, 1.25, 3.5, and 4.0, respectively. Maybe the existence of promethium lines and lines of other unstable chemical elements in the spectra of HD25354, as well as the other stars of our Galaxy, Magellanic Clouds, and Fornax dwarf galaxy, can be explained by contamination of its atmosphere by the products of kilonova outburst and by symmetric decay of chemical elements with long decay times located at the island of stability (atomic numbers Z = 110–128) of transfermium elements. Maybe the decay of superheavy elements of the island of stability can be one of the reasons for the enhanced abundances of rare earth lanthanides in different types of stars. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The most important phase in the endometrial pathologies diagnostics is the histological examination of tissue biopsies obtained under visual hysteroscopic control. However, the unclear visual diagnostics characteristics of subtle focal endometrial pathologies often lead to selection errors regarding suspicious endometrial lesions and to a subsequent false pathological diagnosis/underestimation of precancer or early-stage cancer. Methods: In this study, we investigate the potential of Multimodal Optical Coherence Tomography (MM OCT) to verify suspicious endometrial lesion regions before biopsy collection. We study the polarization (by cross-polarization OCT, CP OCT) and elastic (by compression OCT-elastography, C-OCE) properties of ex vivo endometrial tissue samples in normal conditions (proliferative and secretory phases to the menstrual cycle, atrophic endometrium) with endometrial hyperplasia (non-atypical and endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia) and endometrial cancer subtypes (low-grade, high-grade, clear cell and serous). Results: To the best of our knowledge, this is the first quantitative assessment of relevant OCT parameters (depth-resolved attenuation coefficient in co-[Att(co) values] and cross-[(Att(cross) values] polarizations and Young's elastic modulus [stiffness values]) for the selection of the most objective criteria to identify the clinically significant endometrial pathologies: endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia and endometrial cancer. The study demonstrates the possibility of detecting endometrial pathologies and establishing optimal threshold values of MM OCT criteria for the identification of endometrial cancer using CP OCT (by Att(co) values = 3.69 mm−1, Sensitivity (Se) = 86.1%, Specificity (Sp) = 92.6%; by Att(cross) values = 2.27 mm−1, Se = 86.8%, Sp = 87.0%) and C-OCE (by stiffness values = 122 kPa, Se = 93.2%, Sp = 91.1%). The study also differentiates endometrial intraepithelial neoplasia from non-atypical endometrial hyperplasia and normal endometrium using C-OCE (by stiffness values = 95 kPa, Se = 87.2%, Sp = 90.1%). Conclusions: The results are indicative of the efficacy and potential of clinical implementation of in vivo hysteroscopic-like MM OCT in the diagnosis of endometrial pathologies. Simple Summary: Left displaced abomasum is a common disease among Holstein cattle that is causing significant economic losses. The exact causes of the disease are unknown, but it is assumed that LDA is multifactorial in nature. Predisposition to the displacement has been shown to be inherited. We conducted a genome-wide study to identify statistical associations between certain mutations and left displaced abomasum in Holstein cows from several farms in the Leningrad region. We found suggestive statistical associations with this disease and several mutations located in a set of genes involved in a variety of physiological processes. Some of these processes may be directly related to the development of the disease being studied. In addition, we conducted runs of homozygosity analysis and found that cows with displaced abomasum are more likely than healthy cows to carry a specific state of genomic regions containing genes associated with body shape, including width. This may indicate the role of this trait in the development of the disease. Left displaced abomasum (LDA) is a multifactorial disease of cattle that occurs mainly during the transition postpartum period and is characterized by a decrease in milk production and an increased risk of culling. Several studies have been conducted confirming the hereditary nature of predisposition to this disease. The aim of our study is to identify genetic associations characterizing the genomic variability of susceptibility to LDA in Holstein cattle of the Leningrad region of the Russian Federation. The objects of this study were 360 highly productive dairy cows divided into two groups: animals with LDA, and healthy ones (control). Runs of homozygosity analysis revealed one ROH on BTA13 that was found to be significantly more prevalent in the group of animals with LDA than in the healthy group. Fourteen candidate SNPs were found to be nominally associated with left displacement of the abomasum (p-value < 1 × 10−4). When performing functional annotation of genes containing associated polymorphisms or located close to them, candidate genes presumably associated with the development of LDA were identified: ABCB11, SRP72, RGS18, SOX4, GSG1L, FBXL19, and PNPLA4. Grinding is an important process of ore beneficiation that consumes a significant amount of energy. Pretreating ore before grinding has been proposed to improve ore grindability, reduce comminution energy, and enhance downstream operations. This paper investigates hybrid thermal mechanical pretreatment to improve iron ore grinding behavior. Thermal pretreatment was performed using conventional and microwave approaches, while mechanical pretreatment was conducted with a pressure device using a piston die. Results indicate that conventional (heating rate: 10 °C; maximum temperature: 400 °C), microwave (2.45 GHz, 1.7 kW, 60 s), and mechanical (14.86 MPa, zero delay time) pretreatments improved the studied iron ore grindability by 4.6, 19.8, and 15.4%, respectively. Meanwhile, conventional-mechanical and microwave-mechanical pretreatments enhanced the studied iron ore grindability by 19.2% and 22.6%, respectively. These results suggest that stand-alone mechanical pretreatment or microwave pretreatment may be more beneficial in improving the grinding behavior of the studied fine-grain iron ore sample. Simple Summary: A severe, fatal COVID-19 disease is often associated with the occurrence of hemophagocytosis. Hemophagocytosis is particularly pronounced in the hilar lymph nodes, indicating compartmentalized human host responses to life-threatening infections. In systemic hyper-inflammation, as in severe COVID-19 disease, there are pronounced disorders of the hematological and lymphatic systems with prognostically relevant hemophagocytosis of the bone marrow. The current work aimed to address the importance of hemophagocytosis in the lymph nodes of patients with severe COVID-19 disease. From 28 patients who died of severe COVID-19 infection, samples of the vertebral bone marrow and lymph nodes from the cervical, hilar, para-aortic, mesenteric and inguinal locations were morphologically and immunohistologically (CD163, CD68, CD61, CD71, CD3, CD20, CD138) examined for the possible presence of hemophagocytosis. In the single-center study at the University Hospital Jena, a total of 191 hemophagocytes were found in the bone marrow and a total of 780 hemophagocytes in the lymph nodes in a standardized area of 21,924 mm2 per tissue sample. With 370 hemophagocytes, hilar lymph nodes were most frequently affected (370/780; 47.44%; 95%-CI: [43.94, 50.95]), followed by cervical lymph nodes (206/780; 26.41%; 95%-CI: [23.41, 29.59]), para-aortic lymph nodes (125/780; 16.03%; 95%-CI: [13.58, 18.73]) and inguinal/mesenteric lymph nodes (79/780; 10.13%; 95%-CI: [8.155, 12.4]). Based on the standard area (21,924 mm2), the difference in the number of hemophagocytes in the bone marrow and in the hilar lymph nodes was statistically significant (p < 0.05), while this did not apply to the lymph nodes from the other locations. In fatal COVID-19 disease, hemophagocytosis is particularly found in the hilar lymph nodes and is therefore a better indicator of the severity of the disease than hemophagocytosis in the bone marrow. Feijoa sellowiana (O. Berg) is a broadly widespread fruit tree species at a very early stage of domestication. Although appreciated for its flavored berries rich in nutrients and nutraceuticals, and as an ornamental plant, feijoa is still considered an underutilized species and little information is available about its genetic background, cultivar traceability and divergence. This study aimed to investigate, for the first time, the genetic diversity of feijoa through the application of AFLPs. Specifically, twenty cultivars from different countries and six wild types (WTs) from their area of origin (Misiones, Argentina) were analyzed. The AFLPs proved to be informative, revealing the values of the percentage of polymorphic loci (PPB), Nei's genetic diversity (h), and the Shannon index (I) at 69.36%, 0.27, and 0.43, respectively, consistent with the average of long-lived perennial and outcrossing species. However, despite the limited number of WTs examined, the genetic variability (h) was higher (approximately 37%) within the six samples compared to cultivars. The population structure analysis identified three clusters, with WTs forming a separated cluster (III) as expected. Cultivars were divided into two clusters (I and II), with cluster I exhibiting a closer genetic proximity to WTs compared to cluster II. This finding was further confirmed using the UPGMA dendrogram based on Provesti distances. This work raised awareness of the genetic variability among the feijoa's widespread cultivars and demonstrated that the limited genetic breeding programs over the last decades resulted in low diversity among them. Moreover, these results confirm the hypothesis that all varieties are derived from a single narrow ancestral population. Amino acids with unusual types of chirality and their derivatives have recently attracted attention as precursors in the synthesis of chiral catalysts and peptide analogues with unique properties. In this study, we have synthesized a new nido-carborane-based planar-chiral amino acid, in the molecule of which the amino group is directly bonded to the B(3) atom, and the carboxyl group is attached to the B(9) atom through the CH2S+(Me) fragment. 3-Amino-9-dimethylsulfonio-nido-carborane, prepared in three steps from 3-amino-closo-carborane in a high yield, was a key intermediate in the synthesis of the target planar-chiral amino acid. The carboxymethyl group at the sulfur atom was introduced by the demethylation reaction of the dimethylsulfonio derivative, followed by S-alkylation. The structure of new 3,9-disubstituted nido-carboranes was studied for the first time using NMR spectroscopy. The resonances of all boron atoms in the 11B NMR spectrum of 3-amino-9-dimethylsulfonio-nido-carborane were assigned based on the 2D NMR correlation experiments. Background: In staging for testicular germ cell tumor (GCT), current guidelines lack consensus regarding the measurement of retroperitoneal lymph node metastasis, concerning the recommended plane and dimension. This exploratory study aimed to assess its impact on clinical stage (cS) and therapy. Methods: We retrospectively examined 154 cSI (retroperitoneal lymph nodes < 10 mm in axial short-axis diameter (SAD)) GCT patients, without adjuvant therapy and a follow-up ≥ 24 months. Retroperitoneal lymph nodes were measured in staging images in different dimensions (SAD and long-axis diameter (LAD)) and planes (axial, sagittal and coronal). Results: Overall survival was 100%, with 82% free of recurrence after a median follow-up of 83 months. All patients were classified as cSI, based on axial SAD (RECIST 1.1). However, significantly more patients would have been classified as cSIIA (0% vs. 38% vs. 52%) or even cSIIB (0% vs. 1% vs. 25%) according to axial LAD (SWENOTECA, German S3 guideline) or maximum LAD in any plane (EAU, ESMO, AJCC and onkopedia) (p < 0.001). Overtreatment was predicted in 0%, 31% and 61% of patients based on axial SAD, axial LAD and maximum LAD, while undertreatment was estimated at 18%, 10% and 2%, respectively, (p < 0.001). Conclusions: These findings indicate considerable variability in cS based on current lymph node staging recommendations, suggesting that axial SAD (RECIST 1.1) could be the most appropriate parameter for standardized guideline recommendations. The aim of this research was to explore the innovative use of natural additives, containing phytochemicals with proven antimicrobial effects, in the production of epoxy–glass composites. This study was based on information regarding the antimicrobial effects of phytochemicals present in Cistus incanus, Zingiber officinale, and Armoracia rusticana. The additives were subjected to a gas chromatography (GC) analysis to determine their composition, and, subsequently, they were used to prepare resin mixtures and to produce epoxy–glass composites. Samples of the modified materials were tested against E. coli, S. aureus, and C. albicans. In addition, flammability and durability tests were also performed. It was found that the strongest biocidal properties were demonstrated by the material with the addition of cistus, which caused a reduction of microorganisms by 2.13 log units (S. aureus), 1.51 log units (E. coli), and 0.81 log units (C. albicans). The same material also achieved the most favorable results of strength tests, with the values of flexural strength and tensile strength reaching 390 MPa and 280 MPa, respectively. Public transport is a place particularly exposed to various types of pathogens. Currently, there are no solutions on the railway market that involve the use of composites modified in this respect. Background/Objectives: Electroencephalography (EEG) is considered a standard but powerful tool for the diagnosis of neurological and psychiatric diseases. With modern imaging techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), and magnetoencephalography (MEG), source localization can be improved, especially with low-resolution brain electromagnetic tomography (LORETA). The aim of this review is to explore the variety of modern techniques with emphasis on the efficacy of LORETA in detecting brain activity patterns in schizophrenia. The study's novelty lies in the comprehensive survey of EEG methods and detailed exploration of LORETA in schizophrenia research. This evaluation aligns with clinical objectives and has been performed for the first time. Methods: The study is split into two sections. Part I examines different EEG methodologies and adjuncts to detail brain activity in deep layers in articles published between 2018 and 2023 in PubMed. Part II focuses on the role of LORETA in investigating structural and functional changes in schizophrenia in studies published between 1999 and 2024 in PubMed. Results: Combining imaging techniques and EEG provides opportunities for mapping brain activity. Using LORETA, studies of schizophrenia have identified hemispheric asymmetry, especially increased activity in the left hemisphere. Cognitive deficits were associated with decreased activity in the dorsolateral prefrontal cortex and other areas. Comparison of the first episode of schizophrenia and a chronic one may help to classify structural change as a cause or as a consequence of the disorder. Antipsychotic drugs such as olanzapine or clozapine showed a change in P300 source density and increased activity in the delta and theta bands. Conclusions: Given the relatively low spatial resolution of LORETA, the method offers benefits such as accessibility, high temporal resolution, and the ability to map depth layers, emphasizing the potential of LORETA in monitoring the progression and treatment response in schizophrenia. Women have unique experiences with mental health challenges that require relevant strategies and interventions that effectively support their mental health. Empowerment interventions that vary in nature and format have the potential to play a key role in supporting women's mental health. The purpose of this scoping review is to outline empowerment interventions targeting improvement in the mental health of women living in Canada.A search was undertaken using major databases including Medline, Cumulative Index for Nursing and Allied Health Literature (CINAHL), PsycINFO, and the Cochrane Library for studies published between 2013 and 2023. A total of 243 articles were identified, from which 12 were ultimately included in this review. All included studies were conducted in Canada but were diverse in design, setting, and sample size. A total of four types of interventions were identified including mental health and emotional awareness, reading, peer support, and skill building and engagement. The findings of the review inform key insights for mental health care and service providers to focus on sustainable outcomes for women's mental health. Drought is one of the main abiotic stresses affecting plant growth and development. Reduced plant yield and quality are primarily caused by the reductions in photosynthesis, mineral uptake, metabolic disorders, damages from the increased production of reactive oxygen species, and many other disruptions. Plants utilize drought resistance mechanisms as a defense strategy, and the systems' activation is dependent upon several factors, including plant genotype, onthogenesis phase, drought intensity and duration, and the season in which the drought occurs. Impatiens walleriana is a worldwide popular flowering plant recognized for its vibrant flower colors, and is an indispensable plant in pots, gardens and other public areas. It prefers well-draining, moisturized soil, and does not perform well in overly dry or waterlogged conditions. Consequently, inadequate water supply is a common problem for this plant during production, transportation, and market placement, which has a substantial impact on plant performance overall. This review article outlines certain features of morphological, physiological, and molecular alterations induced by drought in ornamental, drought-sensitive plant species I. walleriana, as well as research carried out to date with the aim to improve the drought tolerance. Stress proteins aquaporins and dehydrins, whose molecular structure was described for the first time in this plant species, are highlighted specifically for their role in drought stress. Furthermore, the effective improvement of drought tolerance in I. walleriana by exogenous application of Plant Growth Regulators and Plant Growth-Promoting Bacteria is discussed in detail. Finally, this review can provide valuable insights for improving plant resilience and productivity in the face of water scarcity, which is critical for sustainable agriculture and horticulture. Despite more than 100 years of research, a number of questions concerning the evolution of the post-glacial connection between Lake Ladoga, the largest European lake, and the Baltic Sea remain unanswered. In particular, the location and chronological frames of the paleo-outlet from Lake Ladoga in the Holocene remain debatable. Paleolimnological studies were performed in small lakes in the northern part of the Karelian Isthmus (NW Russia), where the outlet from Lake Ladoga, the Heinjoki Strait, is thought to have existed until the lake drained to the south due to the tilting of its basin. The presence of the indicative "Ladoga species" (e.g., Aulacoseira islandica, Achnanthes joursacense, Cymbella sinuata, Ellerbeckia arenaria, Navicula aboensis, N. jaernefeltii, N. jentzschii, etc.) in the diatom assemblages is used as evidence for the influence of Lake Ladoga during the accumulation of coarse-grained sediments at the bottom of the ancient channel. It also confirms the functioning of the hypothetical northern local branch of the strait. Decreased abundances of the "Ladoga species" and the onset of the accumulation of fine-grained sediments suggest that the water discharge via this paleo-outlet rapidly reduced starting from ca. 4100 cal BP. The termination of the functioning of the Heinjoki Strait is recorded as an abrupt disappearance of the indicative taxa from the diatom record. This was dated to ca. 3500–3200 cal BP, which corresponds to the estimated ages of the birth of the River Neva, the present outlet from Lake Ladoga. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Given the high growth rates of cognitive decline among the elderly population and the lack of effective etiological treatments, early diagnosis of cognitive impairment progression is an imperative task for modern science and medicine. It is of particular interest to identify predictors of an unfavorable subsequent course of cognitive disorders, specifically, rapid progression. Our study assessed the informative role of various risk factors on the dynamics of cognitive impairment among mild cognitive impairment (MCI) patients. The study included patients with MCI (N = 338) who underwent neuropsychological assessment, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination, blood sampling for general and biochemical analysis, APOE genotyping, and polygenic risk score (PRS) evaluation. The APOE ε4/ε4 genotype was found to be associated with a diminished overall cognitive scores initial assessment and negative cognitive dynamics. No associations were found between cognitive changes and the PRS. The progression of cognitive impairment was associated with the width of the third ventricle and hematological parameters, specifically, hematocrit and erythrocyte levels. The absence of significant associations between the dynamics of cognitive decline and PRS over three years can be attributed to the provided suitable medical care for the prevention of cognitive impairment. The issue of antibiotic resistance represents a significant threat that extends beyond human health, encompassing animal welfare and the sustainability of the natural environment. The inappropriate use of antibiotics, poor sanitation and inadequate control measures have contributed to the emergence of drug-resistant bacteria, which can spread at the human–animal–environment interface. The documented presence of antimicrobials in agriculture, veterinary medicine and human medicine has convinced all stakeholders of the need to contribute to the development of a "One Health" approach, which recognises the interrelationships between animals, humans and their environment and the need to adopt a common strategy encompassing these sectors to limit the spread of bacterial antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Although a number of countries have implemented integrated surveillance systems to monitor antibiotic use and antimicrobial resistance, available data suggest that the use of antibiotics in humans, animals and the environment is increasing worldwide. Consequently, the emergence of antibiotic-resistant pathogens is becoming a recurring concern. Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) is a promising noninvasive alternative to epidural stimulation. However, further studies are needed to clarify how tSCS affects postural control. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of transcutaneous cervical spinal cord stimulation on postural stability in healthy participants via computerized stabilization. The center of pressure and the frequency spectrum of the statokinesiogram were assessed in 14 healthy volunteers under tSCS conditions with frequencies of 5 Hz or 30 Hz, subthreshold or suprathreshold stimulus strength, open or closed eyes, and hard or soft surfaces in various combinations. The results revealed that not all the changes in the center of the pressure oscillations reached statistical significance when the tSCS was used. However, tSCS at a frequency of 30 Hz with a suprathreshold stimulus strength improved postural stability. The use of subthreshold or suprathreshold tSCS at 5 Hz led to a shift of 60% of the signal power to the low-frequency range, indicating activation of the vestibular system. With tSCS at 30 Hz, the vestibular component remained dominant, but a decrease in the proportion of high-frequency oscillations was observed, which is associated with muscle proprioception. Thus, transcutaneous electrical stimulation of the cervical spinal cord may be an effective method for activating spinal cord neural networks capable of modulating postural control. Recent advances in all-solid-state battery (ASSB) research have significantly addressed key obstacles hindering their widespread adoption in electric vehicles (EVs). This review highlights major innovations, including ultrathin electrolyte membranes, nanomaterials for enhanced conductivity, and novel manufacturing techniques, all contributing to improved ASSB performance, safety, and scalability. These developments effectively tackle the limitations of traditional lithium-ion batteries, such as safety issues, limited energy density, and a reduced cycle life. Noteworthy achievements include freestanding ceramic electrolyte films like the 25 μm thick Li0.34La0.56TiO3 film, which enhance energy density and power output, and solid polymer electrolytes like the polyvinyl nitrile boroxane electrolyte, which offer improved mechanical robustness and electrochemical performance. Hybrid solid electrolytes combine the best properties of inorganic and polymer materials, providing superior ionic conductivity and mechanical flexibility. The scalable production of ultrathin composite polymer electrolytes shows promise for high-performance, cost-effective ASSBs. However, challenges remain in optimizing manufacturing processes, enhancing electrode-electrolyte interfaces, exploring sustainable materials, and standardizing testing protocols. Identifying biomarkers in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) can improve diagnosis and patient stratification. We evaluated plasmas and sera for interleukins (IL)-11, IL-6, IL-8, IL-17A, and IL-33 as biomarkers in primary NSCLC patients undergoing surgical treatment against normal volunteers. Exhaled-breath condensates (EBCs), a potential source without invasive procedures, were explored in normal individuals. Due to separate recruitment criteria and intrinsic cohort differences, the NSCLC and control cohorts were not well matched for age (median age: 65 vs. 40 years; p < 0.0001) and smoking status (p = 0.0058). Interleukins were first assessed through conventional ELISA. IL-11 was elevated in NSCLC plasma compared to controls (49.71 ± 16.90 vs. 27.67 ± 14.06 pg/mL, respectively, p < 0.0001) but undetectable in sera and EBCs by conventional ELISA. Therefore, high-sensitivity PCR-based IL-11 ELISA was repeated, albeit with concentration discrepancies. IL11 gene and protein upregulation by RT-qPCR and immunohistochemistry, respectively, were validated in NSCLC tumors. The lack of detection sensitivity across IL-6, IL-8, IL-17A, and IL-33 suggests the need for further, precise assays. Surprisingly, biomarker concentrations can be dissimilar across paired plasmas and sera. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM) is a cardiovascular pathology that is caused by variants in genes encoding sarcomere-associated proteins. However, the clinical significance of numerous variants in HCM-associated genes is still unknown. CRISPR/Cas9 is a tool of nucleotide sequence editing that allows for the unraveling of different biological tasks. In this study, introducing a mutation with CRISPR/Cas9 into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) of a healthy donor and the directed differentiation of the isogenic iPSC lines into cardiomyocytes were used to assess the pathogenicity of a variant of unknown significance, p.M659I (c.1977G > A) in MYH7, which was found previously in an HCM patient. Using two single-stranded donor oligonucleotides with and without the p.M659I (c.1977G > A) mutation, together with CRISPR/Cas9, an iPSC line heterozygous at the p.M659I (c.1977G > A) variant in MYH7 was generated. No CRISPR/Cas9 off-target activity was observed. The iPSC line with the introduced p.M659I (c.1977G > A) mutation in MYH7 retained its pluripotent state and normal karyotype. Compared to the isogenic control, cardiomyocytes derived from the iPSCs with the introduced p.M659I (c.1977G > A) mutation in MYH7 recapitulated known HCM features: enlarged size, elevated diastolic calcium level, changes in the expression of HCM-related genes, and disrupted energy metabolism. In Internal Radiotherapy, radiopharmaceutical dosimetry provides an accurate estimation of absorbed radiation doses to organs at risk and tumours. In this paper Velocity Theranostics (Varian Medical Systems), is investigated. Its performances are compared to OLINDA 2.0 in both an anthropomorphic phantom and a group of patients. Velocity Theranostics was evaluated with a cohort of patients (15) treated with 177Lu radiolabelled peptides. The absorbed doses were calculated for the liver, spleen and kidneys, separately with OLINDA 2.0 and Velocity Theranostics using the same set of images. To reduce the contribution of Time-integrated activities (TIAs) on the results and to merely compare the dose calculation algorithms, the OLINDA 2.0 absorbed doses were calculated using the TIA values calculated in Velocity Theranostics. The absorbed doses from Velocity Theranostics were found to be correlated with the doses from OLINDA 2.0 with the TIAs from Theranostics (Lin's coefficient = 0.894 and R2 = 0.9531). Absorbed doses from Velocity Theranostics are reliable at least as reliable as those for OLINDA 2.0, with many advantages regarding accuracy of calculations and robustness. In conclusion, the personalisation of dosimetry may be totally fulfilled by computational systems for absorbed dose in internal radiotherapy, equipped with a complete workflow and borrowed from external radiotherapy. The European population is ageing. Food Supplements (FSs) are foods with particular characteristics, consumed by elderly people for various purposes, including combating nutritional deficits. Their consumption in this age group, associated with a high prevalence of polypharmacy, can enhance interactions. Potential drug-food (or food supplements), drug-drug interactions and polypharmacy are common health issues among older adults. The prevalence of polypharmacy is high, and preliminary data also indicate that there is significant FS use, increasing the risk of the duplication of therapies and various adverse reactions as well as drug–FS and FS-FS interactions. Therefore, the intervention of health professionals in mitigating these risks is essential. This review highlights and discusses the association between FSs, polypharmacy, and adverse reactions due to the risk of potential interactions between these products. Moreover, it also provides current scientific evidence regarding the use of FSs by the elderly. A review of the challenges, advantages, and risks of using FSs in elderly people who are malnourished and/or polymedicated, focusing on the good practises needed to support healthy ageing, is presented. In this regard, this paper aims to help health professionals better deal with the issue of the use of multiple FSs and polypharmacy, overcome the malnutrition problem, and improve the health and well-being of older adults. The development of cross-reactive vaccines is one of the central aims of modern vaccinology. Continuous mutation and the emergence of new SARS-CoV-2 variants and subvariants create the problem of universal coronavirus vaccine design. Previously, the authors devised three recombinant coronavirus antigens, which were based on the sequence collected in 2019 (the Wuhan variant) and produced in an E. coli bacterial expression system. The present work has shown, for the first time, that these recombinant antigens induce the production of antibodies that clearly interact with produced in CHO full-length S-protein of the Omicron variant. The immunogenicity of these recombinant antigens was studied in formulations with different adjuvants: Freund's adjuvant, Al(OH)3 and an adjuvant based on spherical particles (SPs), which are structurally modified plant virus. All adjuvanted formulations effectively stimulated Omicron-specific IgG production in mice. These universal coronavirus antigens could be considered the main component for the further development of broad-spectrum coronavirus vaccines for the prevention of SARS-CoV-2 infection. The present work also provides evidence that the synthetic biology approach is a promising strategy for the development of highly cross-reactive vaccines. This article presents approaches for enhancing engineering-geological and geotechnical research for the restoration and reconstruction projects of cultural heritage objects in St. Petersburg's historical center. According to the Venice Charter, an interdisciplinary approach is recommended for developing a preservation program for cultural heritage objects. The authors consider the underground space as a multi-component system, where soils are a host medium for underground water with specific composition, complex physicochemical and biochemical conditions, the presence and vigorous activity of microorganisms, gases of various origins, and underground bearing and enclosing structures. The last of these components is crucial for the long-term stability of historical and cultural objects, as they interact in complex with water-saturated soils and microorganisms. This approach is not to be found in Russian cultural heritage preservation regulations. In engineering-geological and geotechnical research, multi-component underground space should be studied at the regional, local, and object levels. Assessing redox conditions in the underground environment is crucial for understanding the state of its components. Moreover, this can trigger hazardous processes such as changes in the stress–strain state and unconsolidation of the soil layer due to the generation of low-solubility gases and biocorrosion of ancient and modern building materials, causing premature destruction. Recommendations are provided for carrying out engineering-geological and geotechnical research based on cultural heritage objects, considering the multi-component underground space and features of its geoenvironmental state due to the long-term contamination and transformation of its components. Age-dependent cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is a common disease with a high social burden characterized by heterogeneity of forms and frequent comorbidity with Alzheimer's disease (AD). Previously, we identified two MRI types of CSVD with specific clinical presentation and, probably, different mechanisms. The present study included 34 patients with CSVD and white matter hyperintensity (WMH) of stage Fazekas (F) 3 (mean age 61.7 ± 8.9) and 11 volunteers (mean age 57.3 ± 9.7). Total RNA was isolated from peripheral blood leukocytes. The expression of 58 protein-coding genes associated with CSVD and/or AD and 4 reference genes were assessed as part of the original panel for the NanoString nCounter analyzer. Testing results were validated by real-time PCR. There was a significant decrease in the expression levels of the ACOX1, CD33, CD2AP, TNFR1, and VEGFC genes in MRI type 2 relative to the control group as well as a decrease in the expression level of the CD33 gene in MRI type 2 compared to MRI type 1. Processes associated with inflammatory pathways with decreased expression of the identified genes are important in the development of MRI type 2 of CSVD. The current study aims to synthesize and analyze both pure and La-doped TiO2, and evaluate the photocatalytic and antibacterial activity of as-prepared samples. Doped and undoped samples were prepared by the non-hydrolytic sol–gel method from titanium(IV) chloride, benzyl alcohol, and lanthanum(III) nitrate followed by thermal treatment. Lanthanum content in synthesized samples was 0.4, 1, and 5 mol%. The resulting nanopowders' structure and morphology were described using XRD, IR, and UV–Vis analysis. The average particle sizes of pure and doped TiO2 were about 6–15 nm and anatase was found to be a dominant crystalline phase in the samples. It was observed that particle sizes decreased on increasing La content. The photocatalytic activity of the pure and La-doped sol–gel powders was estimated in the decomposition of paracetamol in distilled water using ultraviolet light illumination. Doping with lanthanum ions has been shown to increase the photocatalytic properties on the degradation of paracetamol. Furthermore, the annealed catalysts (pure and La3+ doped) showed increased photocatalytic activity and degradation of the analgesic in comparison with non-annealed materials. In both cases, the highest photocatalytic efficiency is observed at the optimal La3+ (1 mol%) concentration. The antimicrobial activity of 1 mol% La/TiO2 was tested against a reference strain E. coli in the presence of ultraviolet light and in dark conditions. The number of viable bacterial cells was determined by a spread plate method, and kill curves were performed. The results showed that photoactivated 1 mol% La/TiO2 exhibited a strong bactericidal effect, and in concentration, 1 mg/mL efficiently killed bacteria at an initial cell density of about 105 colony forming units in 1 mL within 15 min. This study evaluates the antibacterial and antifungal effects of ethanol extracts from Gnaphalium uliginosum L. derived from freshly harvested plant biomass, including stems, leaves, flowers, and roots. The extract was analyzed using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) to determine its antimicrobial activity against phytopathogenic bacteria and fungi. Two methods were used in the experiments: agar well diffusion and double serial dilution. Extraction was carried out using the maceration method with different temperature regimes (25 °C, 45 °C, and 75 °C) and the ultrasonic method at various powers (63–352 W) for different durations (5 and 10 min). It was found that the 70% ethanol extract obtained through the ultrasonic experiment at 189 W power for 10 min and at 252 W power for 5 min had the highest antimicrobial activity compared to the maceration method. The most sensitive components of the extracts were the Gram-positive phytopathogenic bacteria Clavibacter michiganensis and the Gram-negative phytopathogenic bacteria Erwinia carotovora spp., with MIC values of 156 μg/mL. Among the fungi, the most sensitive were Rhizoctonia solani and Alternaria solani (MIC values in the range of 78–156 µg/mL). The evaluation of the antimicrobial activity of extracts using the diffusion method established the presence of a growth suppression zone in the case of C. michiganensis (15–17 mm for flowers, leaves, and total biomass), which corresponds to the average level of antimicrobial activity. Clouds and other data artefacts frequently limit the retrieval of key variables from remotely sensed Earth observations. We train a natural language processing (NLP)-inspired algorithm with high-fidelity ocean simulations to accurately reconstruct masked or missing data in sea surface temperature (SST) fields—one of 54 essential climate variables identified by the Global Climate Observing System. We demonstrate that the resulting model, referred to as Enki, repeatedly outperforms previously adopted inpainting techniques by up to an order of magnitude in reconstruction error, while displaying exceptional performance even in circumstances where the majority of pixels are masked. Furthermore, experiments on real infrared sensor data with masked percentages of at least 40% show reconstruction errors of less than the known uncertainty of this sensor (root mean square error (RMSE) ≲ 0.1 K). We attribute Enki's success to the attentive nature of NLP combined with realistic SST model outputs—an approach that could be extended to other remotely sensed variables. This study demonstrates that systems built upon Enki—or other advanced systems like it—may therefore yield the optimal solution to mitigating masked pixels in in climate-critical ocean datasets sampling a rapidly changing Earth. In the ongoing fight against Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19), researchers are exploring potential treatments to improve outcomes, especially in severe cases. This includes investigating the repurposing of existing medications, such as furosemide, which is widely available. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of furosemide on mortality rates among COVID-19 patients with severe or critical illness. We assessed a cohort of 515 hospitalized adults who experienced a high mortality rate of 43.9%. Using a multivariate analysis with adjusted risk ratios (AdRRs), factors like smoking (AdRR 2.48, 95% CI 1.53–4.01, p < 0.001), a high Pneumonia Severity Index (PSI) score (AdRR 7.89, 95% CI 5.82–10.70, p < 0.001), mechanical ventilation (AdRR 23.12, 95% CI 17.28–30.92, p < 0.001), neutrophilia (AdRR 2.12, 95% CI 1.52–2.95, p < 0.001), and an elevated neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (AdRR 2.39, 95% CI 1.72–3.32, p < 0.001) were found to increase mortality risk. In contrast, vaccination and furosemide use were associated with reduced mortality risk (AdRR 0.58, p = 0.001 and 0.60, p = 0.008; respectively). Furosemide showed a pronounced survival benefit in patients with less severe disease (PSI < 120) and those not on hemodialysis, with mortality rates significantly lower in furosemide users (3.7% vs. 25.7%). A Kaplan–Meier analysis confirmed longer survival and better oxygenation levels in patients treated with furosemide. Furthermore, a Structure–Activity Relationship analysis revealed that furosemide's sulfonamide groups may interact with cytokine sites such as tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α) and interleukin-6 (IL-6), potentially explaining its beneficial effects in COVID-19 management. Simple Summary: COVID-19 has had a dramatic impact on new cancer diagnoses and the treatment of cancer patients. This study examines how the COVID-19 pandemic affected prostate cancer diagnosis, staging, and treatment in Reggio Emilia, Northern Italy. Using data from the Cancer Registry from 2018 to 2021, we found a significant drop in new prostate cancer diagnoses during 2020, the height of the pandemic. The number of new cases decreased by 31% in 2020, with a slight recovery of 5% in 2021. We also observed a shift towards more advanced stages and aggressive forms of prostate cancer, with fewer early-stage diagnoses and more cases of metastatic cancer. Despite these changes, treatments such as surgery and radiation therapy have remained constant. The pandemic disrupted an increasing trend of prostate cancer diagnoses seen before 2019, highlighting the need for ongoing diagnostic services and healthcare delivery, even during global health emergencies. Our study highlights the significant impact of COVID-19 on prostate cancer management and the importance of healthcare system resilience. The aim of this work is to evaluate the impact of the pandemic on prostate cancer by evaluating whether there has been a shift towards more aggressive (Gleason) and more advanced tumors (stage IV) and a decline in treatments. The study was conducted on 1123 cases of prostate cancer incident in the Province of Reggio Emilia, Northern Italy, in the period of 2018–2021. In 2020, there was a decline in new diagnoses of prostate cancer (−31%), followed by a slight recovery in 2021 (+5%). While Gleason 7 and 8–10 values remained constant, a significant decrease was recorded in stage I (38.7%, 41.6%, 35.5%, and 27.7%) and an increase in stage IV (13.1%, 13%, 15.4%, and 20%) cases in the years 2018, 2019, 2020, and 2021, respectively. However, there was no impact on surgical treatment (which remained constant at around 35%) and radiotherapy (around 39%). Our findings underline the profound impact of COVID-19 on prostate cancer management, highlighting the importance of healthcare resilience in the face of unprecedented disruptions. In the prehistoric period on the Balkan Peninsula, the technology of white decoration underwent a drastic change. At the beginning of the Neolithic white pigment was applied as paint on a polished surface. At the end of the epoch, white paste was inlaid in incised channels on the surfaces of vessels. This study is focused on the identification of mineral pigments used for white decoration of Neolithic and Chalcolithic pottery from the territory of Bulgaria. The aim of this work is to answer the question of whether the composition of the white pigment varies according to the technique of decoration (paint and inlay). A set of 41 pottery fragments from 11 archaeological sites on the territory of Bulgaria was analyzed utilizing two spectroscopic techniques: laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). Additionally, the experimental data from the LIBS were statistically treated with the multivariate technique, principal component analysis (PCA). The results from the spectral analysis indicated that the main constituent in the white decorated sherds is calcite in various combinations with carrier materials like quartz, feldspars, and metal oxides. The statistical analysis revealed that the primal constituent in the inlaid sherds is calcite while in the painted part, the carrier material is dominant. In some particular sherds, gypsum, hydroxylapatite, kaolinite, and aragonite were also detected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
