Although cemented soil as a subgrade fill material can meet certain performance requirements, it is susceptible to capillary erosion caused by groundwater. In order to eliminate the hazards caused by capillary water rise and to summarize the relevant laws of water transport properties, graphene oxide (GO) was used to improve cemented soil. This paper conducted capillary water absorption tests, unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests, softening coefficient tests, and scanning electron microscope (SEM) tests on cemented soil using various contents of GO. The results showed that the capillary water absorption capacity and capillary water absorption rate exhibited a decreasing and then increasing trend with increasing GO content, while the UCS demonstrated an increasing and then decreasing trend. The improvement effect is most obvious when the content is 0.09%. At this content, the capillary absorption and capillary water absorption rate were reduced by 25.8% and 33.9%, respectively, and the UCS at 7d, 14d, and 28d was increased by 70.32%, 57.94%, and 61.97%, respectively. SEM testing results demonstrated that GO reduces the apparent void ratio of cemented soil by stimulating cement hydration and promoting ion exchange, thereby optimizing the microstructure and improving water resistance and mechanical properties. Water stress can trigger acclimation responses and damage plants. The aim of this study was to evaluate the integrative responses of cotton hydraulic conductance, leaf photosynthesis, and carbon metabolism to short-term drought and subsequent rewatering. A water-controlled pot experiment was conducted in 2020, with soil water drying continuing for one day (D1), two days (D2), and three days (D3) after it reached 40% ± 5% of the soil water holding capacity at the blooming stage of cotton, and the soil was then rewatered to the soil water holding capacity. We investigated how the stem hydraulic conductance, gas exchange, and biochemical traits of cotton were affected by imposed drought stress and subsequent rewatering. The hydraulic characteristics of cotton in the D2 and D3 treatments evolved with damage, complete closure of stomatal conductance, and complete deterioration of photosynthesis, in addition to severe floating changes in the carbon metabolism affected by drought. The leaves' functional characteristics after rewatering cannot be completely recovered to full-irrigation levels, and the recovery extent was strongly linked to the duration. Consequently, it is considered desirable to maintain normal physiological activity during the cotton reproductive period, and the drought episode can be sustained for 1 day in a long-term perspective when the soil water content is depleted to 40% ± 5% of the soil water holding capacity. These results can provide in-depth ideas for better understanding the hydraulic and physiological responses of cotton to drought episodes and rewatering, and they can help drought-affected cotton to cope with future climate change. Economic benefits and risk premiums significantly affect the production system decision making of farmers and government departments. This study evaluated the economic feasibility and estimated the risk premium of 12 rainfed soybean production systems with various planting densities, fertilization rates and planting patterns by considering the impact of soybean price fluctuation. There were two planting densities (D1: 160,000 plants ha−1 and D2: 320,000 plants ha−1), two fertilization rates (F1: 20 kg ha−1 N, 30 kg ha−1 P, 30 kg ha−1 K; F2: 40 kg ha−1 N, 60 kg ha−1 P, 60 kg ha−1 K) and three planting patterns (F+W0: flat cultivation with no irrigation; R+W0: plastic-mulched ridge-furrow cultivation (PMRF) with no irrigation; R+W1: PMRF with supplemental irrigation of 30 mm at the pod-filling stage). Based on the two-year (2019–2020) field data in a semi-humid drought-prone region of northwest China and soybean price fluctuation from January 2014 to June 2021, the net income (NI) was calculated by considering the impact of soybean price fluctuation and assuming constant soybean production costs. The net present value (NPV) method and the stochastic efficiency with respect to a function (SERF) method were used to evaluate the profitability of protective alternatives and the risk of these alternatives. The results showed that the 12 proposed soybean production systems were economically feasible. Reducing the fertilization rate reduced the input costs, but it did not necessarily result in a decrease in soybean yield and NI. The payback period of all production systems was within two years for farmers investing through loans. High-fertilizer and high-density production systems made personal investment obtain the highest economic benefit in this study, which was not the best investment strategy from the perspective of production-to-investment ratio and environmental protection departments. The preferences of farmers with various risk aversion and environmental protection departments in terms of risk premium were also proposed. The economic and risk assessment framework of this study can enhance the understanding of the adjustment of production systems from different perspectives, and provide strategies for promoting the protection of economic, environmental and socially sustainable agricultural systems. To improve the problem of collapsibility of loess, adding industrial materials such as cement is common engineering treatment, but this seriously damages the reclamation performance of soil. Calcium lignosulfonate (CLS) from paper plant waste fluids is a natural bio-based polymer with good application prospects as a soil improver. In this paper, the collapsibility and mechanical properties of CLS improved loess were investigated using a collapsibility test, gray correlation analysis, and an unconfined compressive strength test (UCS). In addition, the strengthening mechanism of CLS-improved loess was also explored based on scanning electron microscopy (SEM), microstructure parameters, and X-ray diffraction. The collapsibility coefficient decreased rapidly after CLS was admixed, and the single and double-oedometer methods showed the same change trend. The order of grey correlation degree of collapsibility on each index from large to small was: moisture content, pore ratio, dry density, and CLS content. The dosage of CLS greatly influenced the mechanical properties and collapsibility of stabilized loess. The optimum amount of CLS for Xi'an loess was 3%, at which the collapsibility coefficient was reduced by more than 95%, and the 28 d UCS increased by 180.01%. From the microstructure and mineral composition analysis perspective, CLS plays a role in filling pores and linking soil particles. After the protonation and ion exchange effect of CLS, the grain size and double electric layer thickness of mineral composition were reduced, and the structural compactness was increased. To explore the potential of smashing ridge tillage irrigation, it is necessary to investigate how smashing ridge tillage technology with mulched drip irrigation affects soil water, salinity, and cotton yield in saline fields. We conducted a two-year (2020–2021) field experiment to study the effects of different smashing ridge tillage depths on soil bulk density, moisture, salinity, dry matter production, yield, and its constituents (effective bolls, 100-bell weight). There were three smashing ridge tillage depths: A (20 cm), B (40 cm), and C (60 cm), with traditional tillage as the CT. The results showed that all of the smashing ridge tillage could reduce soil bulk density, improve the utilization and uptake of deep soil water during the rapid growth period, and reduce the soil salt content. Compared with the CT treatment, the average soil bulk density of the 0–60 cm soil layer in treatments A, B, and C in 2020 and 2021 decreased by 3.05%, 5.87%, 10.09%, and 1.65%, 4.48%, and 8.49%, respectively. The average soil water content in the 0–120 cm soil layer at the flowering and boll stage decreased by 3.68%, 6.28%, 9.04%, and 3.59%, 6.52%, and 9.98%, respectively; the soil salt content in the 0–120 cm soil layer at the boll opening stage decreased by 4.21%, 6.75%, 11.95%, and 5.47%, 24.25%, and 54.13%, respectively. Cotton dry matter production and yield tended to increase with an increasing depth of smash ridge tillage. Treatment C obtained the maximum dry matter production, seed cotton yield, effective bolls, and 100-boll weight. The dry matter production at the boll opening stage was significantly increased by 17.16% and 15.91%, and the yield was significantly increased by 65.24% and 84.14% in treatments C in 2020 and 2021, respectively, compared to CT. The smashing ridge tillage of 60 cm can optimize the structure of the soil tillage layer and also reduce soil salinity and increase yield, which is the suitable depth of smashing ridge tillage for saline cotton fields in the south of Xinjiang. The findings of the study can provide some theoretical basis and practical experience for the improvement of saline soils and sustainable agricultural development in South Xinjiang, China. Winter irrigation is an effective means of salt leaching, but the long-term effect on salinity is unclear. In 2008–2019, three different soil types of farmlands were selected as the study area by drip irrigation under film mulch combined with periodic winter irrigation in the non-growth period. The salinity of 0–150 cm as well as the survival rate and yield of cotton in the non-growth and growth periods were monitored, respectively. The mass fraction of soil salt decreased rapidly under winter irrigation, and then, the salt content in each observation layer increased with years of cultivation. After 10 years of application, the soil salt content basically stabilized at a low level. In 2008, the salinity of the 0–150 cm observation layer of loamy clay, loam, and sandy loam varied within 6–60, 10–65, and 4–22 g·kg−1; after four winter irrigations in 2019, corresponding values dropped below 5.74, 3, and 4.76 g·kg−1, respectively. The salinity returns rate of the different observation layers all exceeded 40%. The desalination rate of the different soils after four winter irrigations all exceeded 63.52%. Cotton survival rate and yield in different soils were directly proportional to each other. After the second winter irrigation, the survival rates on the different soils all exceeded 60%. The results of this study can provide technical support for the sustainable development of different types of soil, farmers' income increase, and salinization land improvement. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
