This letter derives and discusses the superiority of a simple dc-link capacitor voltage control configuration for multilevel neutral-point-clamped converters with any number of levels. The control involves n − 2 control loops regulating the difference between the voltage of neighbor capacitors. These control loops are inherently decoupled, i.e., they are independent and the control action of one loop does not affect the others. This method is proven to be equivalent to previously published approaches, with the added advantages of increased simplicity and scalability to a higher number of levels, all while imposing a lower computational burden. Neutral-point-clamped multilevel converters are a suitable solution to the implementation of low–medium voltage and power applications at present, thanks to their intrinsic superior voltage and current quality. The conventional configurations of these converters present uneven power loss distribution, causing thermal stress in some power semiconductors, which weakens the power converter reliability. To overcome this, an implementation of the neutral-point-clamped multilevel converter based on a switching-cell array is introduced, adding redundant conduction paths on one side and more options to distribute the switching losses on the other side. An active thermal control is proposed to balance the temperature distribution in the converter. A four-level converter has been implemented to evaluate the proposed solution. The experimental results show that the proposed implementation and active thermal control presents an enhanced temperature distribution in the converter and, therefore, reduced thermal stress and better reliability. Nowadays, the internal combustion engine in vehicles is being replaced by electric motors, giving way to the electric vehicle, which results in reduced environmental impact, higher efficiency and lower emission of greenhouse gases. The powertrain of an electric vehicle is its most prominent subsystem, with the batteries and traction inverter being key components. Thus, due to their relevance, advances in the design of both components are of paramount importance. In this paper, the potential benefits achieved through a powertrain design approach based on combining a modular battery bank with multilevel NPC traction inverter topologies were analyzed, in comparison to a conventional two-level powertrain design. Several aspects were analyzed: modularity, complexity, battery-pack state-of-charge balancing, inverter loss, motor ac voltage harmonic distortion, motor common-mode voltage and reliability. Particularly, from the comparison study developed under the selected design scenario, the proposed design approach, based on modular battery packs and multilevel technology, shows a potential reduction of up to 55% in inverter losses, up to 65% in motor ac-voltage total harmonic distortion, and up to 75% in rms common-mode voltage. Neutral-point-clamped (NPC) power conversion topologies are among the most popular multilevel topologies in current industrial products and in industrial and academic research. The proper operation of multilevel three-phase NPC DC–AC converters requires the use of specific pulse-width modulation (PWM) strategies that maintain the DC-link capacitor voltage balance and concurrently optimize various performance factors such as efficiency and harmonic distortion. Although several such PWM strategies have been proposed in the literature, their formulation is often complex and/or covers only particular cases and operating conditions. This manuscript presents a simple formulation of the original virtual-vector-based PWM, which enables capacitor voltage balance in every switching cycle. The formulation is presented, for the general case, in terms of basic phase voltage modulating signals, with no reference to space vectors, involving any number of levels and for any operating conditions, including the overmodulation region. The equivalence of the presented formulation to the original PWM strategy is demonstrated through simulation under different scenarios and operating conditions. Thus, this manuscript offers in a one-stop source a simple, effective, and comprehensive PWM formulation to operate multilevel three-phase NPC DC–AC converters with any number of levels in any operating condition. Neutral-point-clamped multilevel converters are currently a suitable solution for a wide range of applications. It is well known that the capacitor voltage balance is a major issue for this topology. In this paper, a brief summary of the basic topologies, modulations, and features of neutral-point-clamped multilevel converters is presented, prior to a detailed description and analysis of the capacitor voltage balance behavior. Then, the most relevant methods to manage the capacitor voltage balance are presented and discussed, including operation in the overmodulation region, at low frequency-modulation indexes, with different numbers of AC phases, and with different numbers of levels. Both open- and closed-loop methods are discussed. Some methods based on adding external circuitry are also presented and analyzed. Although the focus of the paper is mainly DC–AC conversion, the techniques for capacitor voltage balance in DC–DC conversion are discussed as well. Smart integration of the upcoming proliferation of electric forms of transport in our energy system is the key in order to make it more robust and ready for a greener future. As such, technologies as Vehicle to Home are key in order to optimize the house consumption on an individual level. This paper develops the key blocks of a modified Vehicle to Home system, where in addition to the EV, a stationary battery pack is added. The paper presents models for household consumption, bidirectional AC/DC converter, its control system, dc/dc controllers, and their controllers. The goal is to design a system capable of consuming a desired power over time from the AC grid. Any energy difference is used to charge or discharge the available energy sources. As such, optimal control strategies are developed for the control of both the charging/discharging process. The presented optimized models allow for system level simulation for several weeks on a typical computer. This paper proposes a hybrid converter to supply power from solar power source to load. Since power is generated by solar power, which depends on the intensity of solar power, the power generated by the solar power does not keep at a constant power. Therefore, the proposed system needs a battery to balance power between solar power and load. When the proposed one uses the battery to balance powers, the proposed circuit requires a charger and discharger. To simplify the proposed converter, a buck-boost converter and flyback converter can be combined to implement the battery charging and discharging functions. With this approach, the proposed converter can be operated with zero-voltage switching (ZVS) at turn-on transition to reduce switching loss of switch when the proposed one is operated in the discharging mode. In addition, the proposed hybrid converter has several merits, which are less component counts, lighter weight, smaller size and higher conversion efficiency. As compared with the conventional counterparts with hard-switching circuit, the proposed one can increase conversion efficiency of 4% and achieve efficiency of 85% under full load condition when the proposed one is operated in the discharging mode. Experimental results which are obtained from a prototype with output voltage of 10 V and maximum output power 20 W have been implemented to verify its feasibility. Currently, the total generator capacity installed in most ships is greater than the required capacity. In addition, due to new environmental regulations, various auxiliary gears are required to avoid breaking the law. Therefore, the internal environments of ships, such as their machine rooms, have become narrower, making creating space more important than ever before. This paper provides a method for optimizing generator capacity through an analysis of total load data in order to avoid overestimating the generator capacity. In addition, an actual situation in which the generator capacity is determined by the number of cylinders is considered. Three practical case studies with different possible combinations of generators and varying capacities are presented. Therefore, this method can secure space and reduce weight, which can be beneficial in many ways. This paper proposes a closed-loop control implementation fully-embedded into an FPGA for a permanent-magnet synchronous motor (PMSM) drive based on a four-level active-clamped converter. The proposed FPGA controller comprises a field-oriented control to drive the PMSM, a DC-link voltage balancing closed-loop control (VBC), and a virtual-vector-based modulator for a four-level active-clamped converter. The VBC and the modulator operate in consonance to preserve the DC-link capacitor voltages balanced. The FPGA design methodology is carefully described and the main aspects to achieve an optimal FPGA implementation using low resources are discussed. Experimental results under different operating conditions are presented to demonstrate the good performance and the feasibility of the proposed controller for motor-drive applications.
