Shale oil saturated by high temperature (20 MPa) and high pressure (60 °C) conditions can not only realize the efficient saturation of shale, but also invert the shale oil return and drainage characteristics under the stratum temperature and pressure due to the heterogeneity of shale formations. In this study, the Chang 7 Member shale samples were collected, and the high-temperature and high-pressure containment device was utilized to saturate the shale oil efficiently under 20 MPa and 60 °C, and the differences of liquid hydrocarbon saturation and the degree of liquid hydrocarbon saturation for different types of pores and fractures in the shale were quantitatively characterized with a low-field nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) technology. The results show that under the condition of formation temperature (60 °C) and pressure (20 MPa), shale oil saturation can be reached after 14 d of saturation in the shale samples. The shale oil saturation process can be roughly divided into three stages according to the various saturation rates: the rapid saturation stage, the slow saturation stage, and the second rapid saturation stage, and the degree of saturation of shale oil is characterized by a V-shape. The shale oil was distributed into four types of pore-fracture systems: adsorption pores, micropores, seepage fractures, and layer fractures. Additionally, the fluid dominantly distributes in the micropores and seepage fractures, the shale oil saturation degree of the micropores features a continuous increase, while that for the seepage fractures presents a V-shape, which finally determines the shale oil saturation characteristics of the shale. In recent years, the Chang 7 member of the Mesozoic Triassic Yanchang Formation in the Ordos Basin has emerged as a significant repository of abundant and distinctive unconventional oil resources. The Heshui area boasts substantial shale oil reserves, with reported third-level reserves surpassing 600 million tons. However, the region in the southern part of Heshui is marked by pronounced variability in reservoir quality, intricate oil–water dynamics, low formation energy, and suboptimal fluid properties, leading to divergent development outcomes for horizontal wells. There is an imperative need to devise and refine new geological models to underpin the efficient exploitation of shale oil in the southern Heshui area. This study focuses on the shale oil reservoir of the Chang 7 member in the southern Heshui area of the Ordos Basin, conducting detailed stratigraphic correlation and establishing a refined isochronous stratigraphic framework. Utilizing PetrelTM modeling software (version 2018), we integrate deterministic and stochastic modeling approaches, adhering to the principles of isochronous and phased modeling. By assessing the thickness of sand and mudstone layers and the overall stratigraphic sequence, we derive a geological probability surface. Subsequently, this surface is harnessed to constrain the lithofacies, yielding a constrained lithofacies model. Employing sequential indicator simulation and sequential Gaussian stochastic simulation, we develop a reservoir attribute model that is anchored in the lithofacies model and its controls, culminating in a robust and dependable static model. Employing the geological probability surface constraint method, we meticulously construct the reservoir matrix model, amalgamating individual well data with the inherent certainty and randomness of reservoir plane thickness. The Chang 7 member of the Triassic Yanchang Formation in the Ordos Basin is a significant continent shale oil reservoir in China. Therefore, conducting an in-depth investigation into the pore structure and fluid mobility characteristics of the Chang 7 shale oil reservoir holds immense importance for advancing shale oil exploration. This study conducts a detailed analysis of the pore structures and their impact on fluid mobility of the Chang 7 shale oil reservoir using multiple methodologies, i.e., a cast thin section, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), high-pressure mercury injection (HPMI), low-temperature nitrogen adsorption (LTNA), and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). The results show that the sandstone in the Yanwumao area of the Chang 7 shale oil reservoir consists mainly of lithic arkose and feldspathic litharenite, which can be classified into three lithofacies (massive fine-grained sandstone (Sfm), silt-fine sandstone with graded bedding (Sfgb), and silt-fine sandstone with parallel bedding (Sfp)). Moreover, three pore structures (Type I, II, and III), and four pore spaces (nanopores, micropores, mesopores, and macropores) can be characterized. Pore structure Type I, characterized by large pores, exhibits bimodal pore diameter curves, resulting in the highest levels of movable fluid saturation (MFS) and movable fluid porosity (MFP). Pore structure Type II demonstrates unimodal pore structures, indicating robust connectivity, and higher MFS and MFP. Pore structure Type III primarily consists of dissolved and intercrystalline pores with smaller pore radii, a weaker pore configuration relationship, and the least fluid mobility. Furthermore, a correlation analysis suggests that the pore structure significantly impacts the fluid flowability in the reservoir. Favorable petrophysical properties and large pores enhance fluid flowability. Micropores and mesopores with high fractal dimensions have a greater impact on reservoir fluid mobility compared to macropores and nanopores. Mesopores mainly control MFS and MFP, while micropores govern the shift from bound fluid to movable fluid states. Among the lithofacies types, the Sfm lithofacies exhibit the highest fluid mobility due to their significant proportion of macropores and mesopores, whereas the Sfgb lithofacies have lower values because they contain an abundance of micropores. The Sfp lithofacies also dominate macropores and mesopores, resulting in medium fluid mobility levels. This study combines lithofacies types, micro-reservoir pore structure characteristics, and mobile fluid occurrence characteristics to better understand the dominant reservoir distribution characteristics of the Chang 7 shale oil reservoirs in the Ordos Basin and provide theoretical information for further optimization of production strategies. Organic geochemistry experiments, X-ray diffraction (XRD), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM), N2 adsorption, CO2 adsorption, and two-dimensional nuclear magnetic resonance (2D NMR) were performed on ten Chang 7 shale samples (Longdong area, Ordos Basin) to elucidate their pore structure and the characteristics of oil occurrence. Moreover, the factors influencing free oil were discussed, and an occurrence model was established. FE-SEM analysis reveals that the pore types include interparticle pores, intraplatelet pores within clay aggregates, rare fracture pores, and organic matter (OM) pores. The pores are predominantly slit-shaped. The development of micropores was mainly contributed to by OM. Quartz and clay minerals influence the development of macropores and mesopores, feldspar mainly controls macropore development, and pyrite most strongly affects micropore development. Micropores and mesopores constitute the main total pore specific surface area, while mesopores and macropores are the main contributors to the total pore volume. Pores > 2 nm are the main storage spaces for shale oil, and free oil mainly occurs in pores > 20 nm. Adsorbed oil and free oil were assessed by NMR T1–T2 mapping. The adsorbed oil signal intensities range from 7.5–23.4 a.u. per g of rock, and the free oil signal intensities range from 4.4–23.2 a.u. per g of rock. The free oil proportions are 15.9–70.6% (average of 44.2%). The free oil proportion is negatively correlated with the clay mineral content and total organic carbon (TOC) content but positively correlated with the saturated hydrocarbon content and volume of pores > 20 nm. A set of high-quality lacustrine shales at the bottom of the Chang 7 member of the Yanchang Formation in the Ordos Basin is one of the main source rocks of tight oil and gas and shale oil in the Yanchang Formation. Based on outcrop, core, drilling and seismic data, by the quantitative characterization of outcrops, fine characterization of logging facies and seismic facies, and geochemical tests, the lithofacies types, geophysical response characteristics and organic geochemical characteristics of this high-quality shale are clarified, and the formation paleoenvironment, including redox conditions, paleoclimate, paleosalinity and paleowater depth, is analyzed. The high-quality shale at the bottom of the Chang 7 member is divided into three lithofacies types: black shale, dark massive mudstone and silty mudstone. The organic matter in black shale is mainly interbedded or stratified, the organic matter in dark massive mudstone is dispersed and the organic matter content in silty mudstone is lower. The shale shows high gamma (more than 260 API), a high acoustic time difference (more than 280 μs/m), a high resistivity (more than 330 Ω m) well-logging phase and strong-amplitude parallel–subparallel seismic phase characteristics. Based on the logging and seismic facies characteristics, the plane distribution range of this set of shales is defined. The sedimentary thickness gradually increases from the edge (5–10 m) to the center of the basin, among which the Jiyuan–Huachi–Yijun black shale has the largest thickness (more than 30 m). This set of high-quality shales was mainly formed under a warm and humid paleoclimate, in water depths of 60–120 m, and in an anaerobic reducing and continental freshwater paleoenvironment. The fine identification, distribution range and formation conditions of black shale lithofacies are of practical significance for predicting the distribution of favorable lithofacies of shale oil and gas and the deployment of horizontal wells. Shale oil in the Chang 7 member is the main target for further exploration in the Ordos Basin. However, the lack of research on the characteristics of the Chang 7 member's mudstone and shale reservoir has seriously affected the next stage of exploration for shale oil in the Chang 7 member. This study analyzed in detail the changes in the pore structure of different types of reservoirs and their influencing factors in detail through experiments such as gas adsorption, nuclear magnetic resonance, and high-pressure mercury intrusion. The results showed that black shale is mainly composed of micropores, with a micropore ratio of up to 79.88%. Dark mudstone and silty mudstone are mainly composed of mesopores, with a mesopore ratio greater than 30%. Argillaceous sandstone is mainly composed of large pores, accounting for 78.57%. From black shale to muddy sandstone, the proportion of micropores decreases, while the proportion of macropores increases. The micropore volume is mainly controlled by the organic matter content and the inorganic mineral content related to the organic matter content. Inorganic minerals such as quartz and feldspar mainly control the degree of development of mesopores and macropores. For rocks with a strong hydrocarbon-generating ability (black shale and dark mudstone), the ratio between the total pore volume and micropore volume is the main factor restricting their oil content. For rocks with a weak hydrocarbon-generating capacity (silty mudstone and argillaceous sandstone), the macropore volume and total pore volume are the main controlling factors for oil content. The results of this study have important guiding significance for the next step of exploration and development for shale oil in the Chang 7 member and, to a certain degree, for the exploration of continental shale oil in other basins. Organic matter (OM) type critically controls the hydrocarbon generation potential and organic pore development in black shales. However, maceral variation in lacustrine shales and its control on hydrocarbon generation potential and organic pore development are not yet well understood. In this study, 15 Chang 7 Member shale samples of the Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin, were investigated with organic petrography, Rock-Eval pyrolysis, and a scanning electron microscope to study the maceral composition, hydrocarbon generation potential, and organic pores in this black shale succession. The results show that the studied shales are in the oil window (Ro~0.70%). OM belongs to Type I and Type III kerogen, as demonstrated by Rock-Eval pyrolysis. Macerals in the Chang 7 Member shales are composed of amorphous OM, alginite, sporinite, liptodetrinite, vitrinite, inertinite, and solid bitumen. Amorphous OM and alginite are major hydrocarbon-generating macerals, and their content determines the hydrocarbon potential of shales. Secondary organic pores were not observed in the studied Chang 7 Member shales due to either a low thermal maturity or a dominance of terrigenous OM. Maceral variation can affect the reliability of using Rock-Eval Tmax as a thermal maturity indicator. This study provides important insights into maceral control on hydrocarbon generation and organic pore development in black shales, calling for a critical evaluation of OM in black shale successions with organic petrography.
