Climate change-induced weather events, such as extreme temperatures, prolonged drought spells, or flooding, pose an enormous risk to crop productivity. Studies on the implications of multiple stresses may vary from those on a single stress. Usually, these stresses coincide, amplifying the extent of collateral damage and contributing to significant financial losses. The breadth of investigations focusing on the response of horticultural crops to a single abiotic stress is immense. However, the tolerance mechanisms of horticultural crops to multiple abiotic stresses remain poorly understood. In this review, we described the most prevalent types of abiotic stresses that occur simultaneously and discussed them in in-depth detail regarding the physiological and molecular responses of horticultural crops. In particular, we discussed the transcriptional, posttranscriptional, and metabolic responses of horticultural crops to multiple abiotic stresses. Strategies to breed multi-stress-resilient lines have been presented. The spectral composition of light influences the biosynthesis of flavonoids in many plants. However, the detailed composition of flavonoids and anthocyanins and the molecular basis for their biosynthesis in strawberry fruits under two light-quality treatments, red light supplemented with blue light (RB) and ultraviolet B (UVB) irradiation, remain unclear. In this study, the content of flavonoids and anthocyanins was significantly increased in strawberry fruits under RB light and UVB, respectively. The content of flavonoids and anthocyanins in strawberry fruits under UVB light was dramatically higher than that in strawberry fruits irradiated with RB light, and a total of 518 metabolites were detected by means of LC-MS/MS analysis. Among them, 18 phenolic acids, 23 flavonoids, and 8 anthocyanins were differentially accumulated in the strawberry fruits irradiated with red/blue (RB) light compared to 30 phenolic acids, 46 flavonoids, and 9 anthocyanins in fruits irradiated with UVB. The major genes associated with the biosynthesis of flavonoids and anthocyanins, including structural genes and transcription factors (TFs), were differentially expressed in the strawberry fruits under RB and UVB irradiation, as determined through RNA-seq data analysis. A correlation test of transcriptome and metabolite profiling showed that the expression patterns of most genes in the biosynthesis pathway of flavonoids and anthocyanins were closely correlated with the differential accumulation of flavonoids and anthocyanins. Two TFs, bZIP (FvH4_2g36400) and AP2 (FvH4_1g21210), induced by RB and UVB irradiation, respectively, exhibited similar expression patterns to most structural genes, which were closely correlated with six and eight flavonoids, respectively. These results indicated that these two TFs regulated the biosynthesis of flavonoids and anthocyanins in strawberry fruit under RB light and UVB, respectively. These results provide a systematic and comprehensive understanding of the accumulation of flavonoids and anthocyanins and the molecular basis for their biosynthesis in strawberry fruits under RB light and UVB. Autostereoscopy is usually perceived at finite viewpoints that result from the separated pixel array of a display system. With directionally illuminated autostereoscopy, the separation of the illumination channel from the image channel provides extra flexibility in optimizing the performance of autostereoscopy. This work demonstrates that by taking advantage of illumination freedom, seamless viewpoints in the sweet viewing region, where the ghosting does not cause significant discomfort, are realized. This realization is based on illuminating the screen with a polyline array of light emitting diodes (LEDs), and continuous viewpoints are generated through independent variation in the radiance of each individual LED column. This new method is implemented in the directionally illuminated display for both single and multiple viewers, proving its effectiveness as a valuable technique for achieving a high-quality and high-resolution autostereoscopic display with seamless viewpoints. Contrastive-based clustering models usually rely on a large number of negative pairs to capture uniform representations, which requires a large batch size and high computational complexity. In contrast, some self-supervised methods perform non-contrastive learning to capture discriminative representations only with positive pairs, but suffer from the collapse of clustering. To solve these issues, a novel end-to-end self-supervised clustering model is proposed in this paper. The basic self-supervised learning network is first modified, followed by the incorporation of a Softmax layer to obtain cluster assignments as data representation. Then, adversarial learning on the cluster assignments is integrated into the methods to further enhance discrimination across different clusters and mitigate the collapse between clusters. To further encourage clustering-oriented guidance, a new cluster-level discrimination is assembled to promote clustering performance by measuring the self-correlation between the learned cluster assignments. Current efforts with light field displays are mainly concentrated on the widest possible viewing angle, while a single viewer only needs to view the display in a specific viewing direction. To make the light field display a practical practice, a super multi-view light field display is proposed to compress the information in the viewing zone of a single user by reducing the redundant viewpoints. A quasi-directional backlight is proposed, and a lenticular lens array is applied to achieve the restricted viewing zone. The eye-tracking technique is applied to extend the viewing area. Experimental results show that the proposed scheme can present a vivid 3D scene with smooth motion parallax. Only 16.7% conventional light field display data are required to achieve 3D display. Furthermore, an illumination power of 3.5 watt is sufficient to lighten a 31.5-inch light field display, which takes up 1.5% of the illumination power required for planar display of similar configuration. Flavonoids represent the main class of plant secondary metabolites and occur in the tissues and organs of various plant species. In plants, flavonoids are involved in many biological processes and in response to various environmental stresses. The consumption of flavonoids has been known to reduce the risk of many chronic diseases due to their antioxidant and free radical scavenging properties. In the present review, we summarize the classification, distribution, biosynthesis pathways, and regulatory mechanisms of flavonoids. Moreover, we investigated their biological activities and discuss their applications in food processing and cosmetics, as well as their pharmaceutical and medical uses. Current trends in flavonoid research are also briefly described, including the mining of new functional genes and metabolites through omics research and the engineering of flavonoids using nanotechnology. HD-Zip, a special class of transcription factors in high plants, has a role in plant development and responding to external environmental stress. Heat stress has always been an important factor affecting plant growth, quality, and yield. Carotenoid content is also an important factor affecting the color of the inner leaf blades of Chinese cabbage. In this study, the genomes of three Brassicaceae plants were selected: Chinese cabbage (Brassica rapa subsp. pekinensis), Brassica oleracea, and Brassica napus. We identified 93, 96, and 184 HD-Zip genes in the B. rapa, B. oleracea, and B. napus, respectively. The HD-Zip gene family was classified into four subfamilies based on phylogeny: I, II, III, and IV;. The results of cis-acting element analysis suggested that HD-Zip family genes may participate in various biological processes, such as pigment synthesis, cell cycle regulation, defense stress response, etc. Conserved motifs prediction revealed that three motifs exist among the four HD-Zip gene families and that different motifs exhibit significant effects on the structural differences in HD-Zips. Synteny, Ks, and 4DTv results displayed that genome-wide triplication events act in HD-Zip gene family expansion. Transcriptome data showed that 18 genes responded (>1.5-fold change) to heat stress in Chinese cabbage, and 14 of 18 genes were from the HD-Zip I subfamily. Three genes had up-regulation, and eight genes had down-regulation in high-carotenoid-content Chinese cabbage. The BraA09g011460.3C expression level was up-regulated after heat stress treatment and significantly reduced in varieties with high carotenoid content, indicating its potential for heat stress tolerance and carotenoid content regulation. Podosphaera xanthii is a well-known obligate biotrophic pathogen that causes powdery mildew (PM) disease on cucurbitaceous plants and is one of the most important limiting factors for cucumber production worldwide. To better understand the avirulence effector proteins in this species that are known to be involved in host-pathogen interaction, the draft genome assembly of P. xanthii isolate YZU573 from cucumber leaves with symptoms of PM was obtained with a hybrid approach, combining nanopore long-read and llumina paired-end sequencing. The final P. xanthii YZU573 genome assembly of 152.7 Mb consists of 58 contigs, with an N50 value of 0.75 Mb and 6491 predicted protein-coding genes. The effector analysis using the whole-genome sequence information revealed a total of 87 putative effector candidates, and 65 of them had their analogs, whereas the remaining 22 were novel ones. Flat stem and witches' broom phytoplasma-like symptoms in the cucumber inbred line C17 were observed in a greenhouse at Yangzhou University, China for three consecutive planting seasons; these symptoms resulted in a decreased yield. To better understand the cause of these symptoms, 16S rRNA PCR, plant hormones, mineral elements, and RNA-seq profiling were performed using symptomatic and normal stem samples. The results showed that the causal agent was classified as the Candidatus phytoplasma asteris strain, a plant pathogenic prokaryote that could not be cultured in vitro. Measurement of plant hormones showed that auxin, salicylic acid, and jasmonic acid contents were significantly increased, whereas that of ethylene's immediate biosynthetic precursor, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid, was decreased in the phytoplasma-infected stems compared with the healthy stems. Furthermore, measurement of mineral element composition showed that magnesium, calcium, sodium, iron, and zinc concentrations significantly changed in the phytoplasma-infected cucumber stems compared with the uninfected stems. Comparative RNA-seq identified 253 differentially expressed genes, including 179 upregulated and 74 downregulated genes. Further analyses suggested that genes related to phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, phenylalanine metabolism, and plant hormone signal transduction contributed to phytoplasma infection. The cucumber is characterized by the presence of a wide range of volatile organic compounds (VOCs), which are recognized as the main responsible for its unique flavor. However, research on the types and contents of VOCs in different cucumber cultivars remains fragmentary. Here, using an automatic headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with the gas chromatography–mass spectrometry method, the VOCs were analyzed in three representative cucumber cultivars, including YX, KX, and GX, with the best, middle, and worst flavor quality, respectively, which were selected from 30 cultivars after flavor quality evaluation. Principal component analysis revealed that the six biological replicates were grouped, indicating high reliability of the data. A total of 163 VOCs were detected. There were 28 differential VOCs in YX compared to GX, 33 differential VOCs in YX compared to KX, and 10 differential VOCs in KX compared to GX. Furthermore, K-means clustering analysis showed that 38 of the 43 no-overlapping differential VOCs were represented by the most abundant compounds detected in YX. The prevailing VOCs in YX included: hydrocarbons, aldehydes, and ketones. The data obtained in the present study extend our understanding the impact of cultivars on VOCs in cucumber and will help facilitate targeted breeding. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) is an important vegetable crop worldwide, and Fusarium wilt (FW), caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum (Foc), severely restricts cucumber growth and yield. Accumulating lines of evidence indicate that chitinases play important roles in attacking the invading fungal pathogens through catalyzing their cell wall degradation. Here, we identified the chitinase (Chi) genes in cucumber and further screened the FW-responsive genes via a comparative transcriptome analysis and found that six common genes were predominantly expressed in roots but also significantly upregulated after Foc infection. Expression verification further conformed that Chi2 and Chi14 were obviously induced by Foc as well as by hormone treatments, compared with the controls. The purified Chi2 and Chi14 proteins significantly affected the growth of Foc in vitro, compared with the controls. Knockdown of Chi2 in cucumber by virus-induced gene silencing (VIGS) increased susceptibility to FW, compared with the Chi14-silenced and control plants, and silencing of Chi2 drastically impaired gene activation in the jasmonic acid pathway, suggesting that the Chi2 gene might play positive roles in cucumber FW defense and, therefore, can provide a gene resource for developing cucumber-FW-resistance breeding programs. Fusarium wilt (FW) of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum (Foc) is a destructive soil-borne disease that severely decreases cucumber yield and quality worldwide. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small non-coding RNAs (sRNAs) that are important for regulating host immunity because they affect target gene expression. However, the specific miRNAs and the miRNA/target gene crosstalk involved in cucumber resistance to FW remain unknown. In this study, we compared sRNA-seq and RNA-seq data for cucumber cultivar 'Rijiecheng', which is resistant to FW. The integrated analysis identified FW-responsive miRNAs and their target genes. On the basis of verified expression levels, we detected two highly expressed miRNAs with down-regulated expression in response to Foc. Moreover, an analysis of 21 target genes in cucumber inoculated with Foc indicated that JRL3 (Csa2G362470), which is targeted by miR319a, and BEE1 (Csa1G024150), DAHP1 (Csa2G369040), and PERK2 (Csa4G642480), which are targeted by miR6300, are expressed at high levels, but their expression is further up-regulated after Foc inoculation. These results imply that miR319a-JRL3, miR6300-BEE1, miR6300-DAHP1 and miR6300-PERK2 regulate cucumber defenses against FW, and provide the gene resources that may be useful for breeding programs focused on developing new cucumber varieties with enhanced resistance to FW. Fusarium wilt (FW) in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum (Foc), poses a major threat to cucumber growth and productivity. However, lack of available natural resistance resources for FW restricts the breeding of resistant cultivars via conventional approaches. Susceptibility (S) genes in susceptible host plants facilitate infection by the pathogen and contribute to susceptibility. Loss of function of these S genes might provide broad-spectrum and durable disease resistance. Here, we screened S genes via comparative proteomic analysis between cucumber cultivars Rijiecheng and Superina, which exhibited resistance and high -susceptibility to FW, respectively. We identified 210 and 243 differentially regulated proteins (DRPs) in the Rijiecheng and Superina, respectively, and further found that 32 DRPs were predominantly expressed in Superina and significantly up-regulated after Foc inoculation. Expression verification found that TMEM115 (CsaV3_5G025750), encoding a transmembrane protein, TET8 (CsaV3_2G007840), encoding function as a tetraspanin, TPS10 (CsaV3_2G017980) encoding a terpene synthase, and MGT2 (CsaV3_7G006660), encoding a glycosyltransferase, were significantly induced in both cultivars after Foc infection but were induced to a higher expression level in Superina. These candidate genes might act as negative regulators of FW resistance in cucumber and provide effective FW-susceptibility gene resources for improving cucumber FW resistance through breeding programs. A total of 54 FvbZIP genes were identified from the strawberry genome. These genes were found to be unevenly distributed on seven different chromosomes, and two of the genes had no matching chromosomal localization. FvbZIP genes were divided into 10 subfamilies according to protein sequence, and the structures of these genes were found to be highly conserved. Based on the bioinformatics analysis of FvbZIP genes, the expression of FabZIP genes changed during different stages of its growth and of its infection with gray mold disease. FabZIP46 was substantially upregulated, and its expression remained relatively high. FabZIP46 was cloned from cultivated strawberries by homologous cloning. The results of a transient transgenic assay revealed that the damage to the fruit tissue was markedly alleviated in strawberries overexpressing FabZIP46, with the incidence rate being substantially lower than that in the control group. By contrast, a brief silencing of FabZIP46 had the opposite effect. The results revealed that FabZIP46 played a positive role in the resistance of strawberries to Botrytis cinerea. The study findings provide valuable insights into the role of bZIP transcription factors as well as a theoretical reference for the regulation of resistance to gray mold disease in strawberry fruit. Astringency is one of the most important components of fruit oral sensory quality. Astringency mainly comes from tannins and other polyphenolic compounds and causes the drying, roughening and puckering of the mouth epithelia attributed to the interaction between tannins and salivary proteins. There is growing interest in the study of fruit astringency because of the healthy properties of astringent substances found in fruit, including antibacterial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, anticarcinogenic, antiallergenic, hepatoprotective, vasodilating and antithrombotic activities. This review will focus mainly on the relationship between tannin structure and the astringency sensation as well as the biosynthetic pathways of astringent substances in fruit and their regulatory mechanisms.
