Multiple forms of interference and noise that impact the receiver's capacity to receive and interpret satellite signals, and consequently the preciseness of positioning and navigation, may be present during the processing of Global Positioning System (GPS) navigation. The non-Gaussian noise predominates in the signal owing to the fluctuating character of both natural and artificial electromagnetic interference, and the algorithm based on the minimum mean-square error (MMSE) criterion performs well when assuming Gaussian noise, but drops when assuming non-Gaussian noise. The maximum correntropy criteria (MCC) adaptive filtering technique efficiently reduces pulse noise and has adequate performance in heavy-tailed noise, which addresses the issue of filter performance caused by the presence of non-Gaussian or heavy-tailed unusual noise values in the localizing measurement noise. The adaptive kernel bandwidth (AKB) technique employed in this paper applies the calculated adaptive variables to generate the kernel function matrix, in which the adaptive factor can modify the size of the kernel width across a reasonably appropriate spectrum, substituting the fixed kernel width for the conventional MCC to enhance the performance. The conventional maximum correntropy criterion-based extended Kalman filter (MCCEKF) algorithm's performance is significantly impacted by the value of the kernel width, and there are certain predetermined conditions in the selection based on experience. The MCCEKF with a fixed adaptive kernel bandwidth (MCCEKF-AKB) has several advantages due to its novel concept and computational simplicity, and gives a qualitative solution for the study of random structures for generalized noise. Simple Summary: We aimed to investigate if VDT could be applied as a predictor of clinical outcome in segmentectomy and wedge resection. We retrospectively studied 96 NSCLC patients post sublobar resection from 2012 to 2018, collecting two chest CT scans preoperatively of each case and calculating VDT. The receiver operating characteristic curve was constructed to identify the optimal cut-off point of VDTs as 133 days. We divided patients into two groups: VDT < 133 days (n = 22) and VDT ≥ 133 days (n = 74). Univariable and multivariable analyses were performed for comparative purposes. Our study demonstrated that the five year OS rates of patients with VDTs ≧ 133 days and VDTs < 133 days, respectively, were 89.9% and 71.9% (p = 0.003), and the five year DFS rates were 95.9% and 61.5% (p = 0.002). Thus, we concluded that VDT can be a powerful prognostic predictor and provides an essential role in planning surgical procedures. The five year OS rates of patients with VDTs ≥ 133 days and VDTs < 133 days, respectively, were 89.9% and 71.9%, and the five year DFS rates were 95.9% and 61.5%. Background and Objectives: Cultural beliefs influence the conceptualization, adaptation, and coping strategies for diseases. This study aimed to investigate the impact of cultural beliefs and customs on the willingness to undergo cataract surgery in Taiwan. Materials and Methods: The data were retrospectively retrieved from the national Longitudinal Health Insurance Database 2000 (LHID2000). From the national database, we enrolled patients that were diagnosed with cataracts and underwent cataract surgery from 2001 to 2010. All the patients were stratified according to their gender and living area. Gender was categorized as male or female, and the living area was classified as urban or rural. We compared the difference in the number of surgeries between stratified patient groups in each Chinese lunar month. Results: The number of cataract surgeries decreased significantly in the seventh and twelfth lunar months for both genders. There was a significant reduction in cataract surgeries in both the urban and rural groups during the seventh lunar month. Interestingly, only the seventh lunar month had an association with sex in different living areas, which meant that in the seventh month, there was a gender-specific difference in the surgical numbers. Conclusions: The Taiwanese population holds a belief that surgical procedures, including cataract surgery, during the lunar ghost month is inauspicious. Citizens tend to avoid elective surgery due to cultural practice, resulting in a decrease in surgical numbers during the period of the Chinese New Year. The authorities should consider these cultural behaviors when developing medical policies and allocating resources. Forest fires are among the most critical natural tragedies threatening forest lands and resources. The accurate and early detection of forest fires is essential to reduce losses and improve firefighting. Conventional firefighting techniques, based on ground inspection and limited by the field-of-view, lead to insufficient monitoring capabilities for large areas. Recently, due to their excellent flexibility and ability to cover large regions, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have been used to combat forest fire incidents. An essential step for an autonomous system that monitors fire situations is first to locate the fire in a video. State-of-the-art forest-fire segmentation methods based on vision transformers (ViTs) and convolutional neural networks (CNNs) use a single aerial image. Nevertheless, fire has an inconsistent scale and form, and small fires from long-distance cameras lack salient features, so accurate fire segmentation from a single image has been challenging. In addition, the techniques based on CNNs treat all image pixels equally and overlook global information, limiting their performance, while ViT-based methods suffer from high computational overhead. To address these issues, we proposed a spatiotemporal architecture called FFS-UNet, which exploited temporal information for forest-fire segmentation by combining a transformer into a modified lightweight UNet model. First, we extracted a keyframe and two reference frames using three different encoder paths in parallel to obtain shallow features and perform feature fusion. Then, we used a transformer to perform deep temporal-feature extraction, which enhanced the feature learning of the fire pixels and made the feature extraction more robust. Finally, we combined the shallow features of the keyframe for de-convolution in the decoder path via skip-connections to segment the fire. We evaluated empirical outcomes on the UAV-collected video and Corsican Fire datasets. The proposed FFS-UNet demonstrated enhanced performance with fewer parameters by achieving an F1-score of 95.1% and an IoU of 86.8% on the UAV-collected video, and an F1-score of 91.4% and an IoU of 84.8% on the Corsican Fire dataset, which were higher than previous forest fire techniques. This study tested the hypothesis that intrarenal arterial transfusion of oxidized low-density lipoprotein (ox-LDL) jeopardized the residual renal function and kidney architecture in rat chronic kidney disease ((CKD), i.e., induced by 5/6 nephrectomy) that was reversed by rosuvastatin. Cell culture was categorized into A1 (NRK-52E cells), A2 (NRK-52E + TGF-β), A3 (NRK-52E + TGF-β + ox-LDL) and A4 (NRK-52E + TGF-β + ox-LD). The result of in vitro study showed that cell viability (at 24, 48 and 72 h), NRK-52E ox-LDL-uptake, protein expressions of epithelial–mesenchymal–transition (EMT) markers (i.e., p-Smad2/snail/α-SMA/FSP1) and cell migratory and wound healing capacities were significantly progressively increased from A1 to A4 (all p < 0.001). SD rats were categorized into group 1 (sham-operated control), group 2 (CKD), group 3 (CKD + ox-LDL/0.2 mg/rat at day 14 after CKD induction) and group 4 (CKD + ox-LDL-treated as group 3+ rosuvastatin/10 mg/kg/day by days 20 to 42 after CKD induction) and kidneys were harvested at day 42. The circulatory levels of BUN and creatinine, ratio of urine-protein to urine-creatinine and the protein expressions of the above-mentioned EMT, apoptotic (cleaved-caspase3/cleaved-PARP/mitochondrial-Bax) and oxidative-stress (NOX-1/NOX-2/oxidized-protein) markers were lowest in group 1, highest in group 3 and significantly higher in group 4 than in group 2 (all p < 0.0001). Histopathological findings demonstrated that the kidney injury score, fibrotic area and kidney injury molecule-1 (KIM-1) displayed an identical pattern, whereas the cellular expression of podocyte components (ZO-1/synaptopodin) exhibited an opposite pattern of EMT markers (all p < 0.0001). In conclusion, ox-LDL damaged the residual renal function and kidney ultrastructure in CKD mainly through augmenting oxidative stress, EMT and fibrosis that was remarkably reversed by rosuvastatin. This study investigated the hypothesis that probiotics enhanced the therapeutic effect of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ADMSCs) on alleviating neuropathic pain (NP) due to chronic constriction injury (CCI) mainly through regulating the microbiota in rats. SD rats (n = 50) were categorized into group 1 (sham-control), group 2 (NP), group 3 (NP + probiotics (i.e., 1.5 billion C.F.U./day/rat, orally 3 h after NP procedure, followed by QOD 30 times)), group 4 (NP + ADMSCs (3.0 × 105 cells) 3 h after CCI procedure, followed by QOD six times (i.e., seven times in total, i.e., mimic a clinical setting of drug use) and group 5 (NP + probiotics + ADMSCs (3.0 × 105 cells)) and euthanized by day 60 after NP induction. By day 28 after NP induction, flow-cytometric analysis showed circulating levels of early (AN-V+/PI−) and late (AN-V+/PI+) apoptotic, and three inflammatory (CD11b-c+, Ly6G+ and MPO+) cells were lowest in group 1 and significantly progressively reduced in groups 2 to 5 (all p < 0.0001). By days 7, 14, 21, 28, and 60 after CCI, the thresholds of thermal paw withdrawal latency (PWL) and mechanical paw withdrawal threshold (PWT) were highest in group 1 and significantly progressively increased in groups 2 to 5 (all p < 0.0001). Numbers of pain-connived cells (Nav1.8+/peripherin+, p-ERK+/peripherin+, p-p38+/peripherin+ and p-p38+/NF200+) and protein expressions of inflammatory (p-NF-κB, IL-1ß, TNF-α and MMP-9), apoptotic (cleaved-caspase-3, cleaved-PARP), oxidative-stress (NOX-1, NOX-2), DNA-damaged (γ-H2AX) and MAPK-family (p-P38, p-JNK, p-ERK1/2) biomarkers as well as the protein levels of Nav.1.3, Nav.1.8, and Nav.1.9 in L4-L5 in dorsal root ganglia displayed an opposite pattern of mechanical PWT among the groups (all p < 0.0001). Featured Application: Treatment of magnolol represents a new therapeutic strategy that may reduce the risk of vascular diseases associated with abnormal vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) migration or thrombin/protease-activated receptor 1 (PAR-1) activation. Restenosis and destructive vascular remodeling are the main reasons for treatment failure in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). In this study, we explored the efficacy of magnolol (a traditional Chinese medicine) in the treatment of restenosis. The results of this study showed that the activities of thrombin and PAR-1 (protease-activated receptor 1) were significantly decreased by the treatment of magnolol. Based on protein docking analysis, magnolol exhibits its potential to bind to the PAR-1 active site. In addition, thrombin-induced connective tissue growth factor (CTGF) expression and the upstream of CTGF such as JNK-1 (but not JNK-2), c-Jun, and AP-1 were distinctly inhibited by magnolol (50 μM) in vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). For the functional assay, magnolol (50 μM) significantly inhibited the migration of VSMC, and rats treated with magnolol (13 mg/kg/day) after balloon angioplasty has observed a significant reduction in the formation of common arterial neointima. In conclusion, we identified a novel mechanism by which magnolol acts as the thrombin activity inhibitor and may be the PAR-1 antagonist. This study tested the hypothesis that cellular prion protein (PrPC) played an essential role in myocardial regeneration and recovery of left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) from apical takotsubo cardiomyopathy (TCM) induced by transaortic constriction (TAC). In vitro study was categorized into G1 (H9C2), G2 (H9C2-overexpression-PrPC), G3 (H9C2-overexpression-PrPC + Stelazine/1 uM), and G4 (H9C2 + siRNA-PrPC), respectively. The results showed that the protein expressions of PrPC, cell-stress signaling (p-PI3K/p-Akt/p-m-TOR) and signal transduction pathway for cell proliferation/division (RAS/c-RAF/p-MEK/p-ERK1/2) were lowest in G1, highest in G2, significantly higher in G3 than in G4 (all p < 0.001). Adult-male B6 mice (n = 30) were equally categorized in group 1 (sham-control), group 2 (TAC) for 14 days, then relieved the knot and administered BrdU (50 ug/kg/intravenously/q.6.h for two times from day-14 after TAC) and group 3 (TAC + Stelazine/20 mg/kg/day since day 7 after TAC up to day 21 + BrdU administered as group 2), and animals were euthanized at day 28. The results showed that by day 28, the LVEF was significantly higher in group 1 than in groups 2/3 and significantly higher in group 3 than in group 2, whereas the LV chamber size exhibited an opposite pattern of LVEF (all p < 0.0001). The protein expressions of PrPC/p-PI3K/p-Akt/p-m-TOR/cyclin D/cyclin E and cellular-proliferation biomarkers (Ki67/PCNA/BrdU) exhibited an opposite pattern of LVEF (all p < 0.0001) among the three groups, whereas the protein expressions of RAS/c-RAF/p-MEK/p-ERK1/2 were significantly and progressively increased from groups 1 to 3 (all p < 0.0001). In conclusion, PrPC participated in regulating the intrinsic response of cell-stress signaling and myocardial regeneration but did not offer significant benefit on recovery of the heart function in the setting of TCM. A company undertakes environmental initiatives to reduce environmental impact from their activities; however, the impact reduction effect of these initiatives is not clear. This study investigated the environmental initiatives and impact indicators disclosed in forty corporate social responsibility (CSR) reports of construction companies and determined the relationships between the initiatives and indicators. The results demonstrated that the likelihood of an initiative reducing environmental impacts was approximately 25% on average, meaning that one in four companies was able to successfully implement initiatives. The energy consumption reduction from initiatives had the highest probability, at 40%, and water consumption reduction had only 9.4%. This study contributes to making explicit relationships between initiatives and impact reductions possible. Chloroquine (CQ) and its derivative, hydroxychloroquine (HCQ), have attracted wide attention for treating coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). However, conflicting outcomes have been found in COVID-19 clinical trials after treatment with CQ or HCQ. To date, it remains uncertain whether CQ and HCQ are beneficial antiviral drugs for combating COVID-19. We performed a systematic review to depict the efficacy of CQ or HCQ for the treatment of COVID-19. The guidelines of PRISMA were used to conduct this systematic review. We searched through articles from PubMed, Web of Science and other sources that were published from 1 January 2020 to 31 October 2020. The search terms included combinations of human COVID-19, CQ, and HCQ. Eleven qualitative articles comprising of four clinical trials and seven observation studies were utilized in our systematic review. The analysis shows that CQ and HCQ do not have efficacy in treatment of patients with severe COVID-19. In addition, CQ and HCQ have caused life-threatening adverse reactions which included cardiac arrest, electrocardiogram modification, and QTc prolongation, particularly during the treatment of patients with severe COVID-19. Our systematic review suggested that CQ and HCQ are not beneficial antiviral drugs for curing patients with severe COVID-19. The treatment effect of CQ and HCQ is not only null but also causes serious side effects, which may cause potential cardiotoxicity in severe COVID-19 patients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study tested whether circulatory endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs) derived from peripheral arterial occlusive disease (PAOD) patients after receiving combined autologous CD34+ cell and hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) therapy (defined as rejuvenated EPCs) would salvage nude mouse limbs against critical limb ischemia (CLI). Adult-male nude mice (n = 40) were equally categorized into group 1 (sham-operated control), group 2 (CLI), group 3 (CLI-EPCs (6 × 105) derived from PAOD patient's circulatory blood prior to CD34+ cell and HBO treatment (EPCPr-T) by intramuscular injection at 3 h after CLI induction) and group 4 (CLI-EPCs (6 × 105) derived from PAOD patient's circulatory blood after CD34+ cell and HBO treatment (EPCAf-T) by the identical injection method). By 2, 7 and 14 days after the CLI procedure, the ischemic to normal blood flow (INBF) ratio was highest in group 1, lowest in group 2 and significantly lower in group 4 than in group 3 (p < 0.0001). The protein levels of endothelial functional integrity (CD31/von Willebrand factor (vWF)/endothelial nitric-oxide synthase (eNOS)) expressed a similar pattern to that of INBF. In contrast, apoptotic/mitochondrial-damaged (mitochondrial-Bax/caspase-3/PARP/cytosolic-cytochrome-C) biomarkers and fibrosis (Smad3/TGF-ß) exhibited an opposite pattern, whereas the protein expressions of anti-fibrosis (Smad1/5 and BMP-2) and mitochondrial integrity (mitochondrial-cytochrome-C) showed an identical pattern of INBF (all p < 0.0001). The protein expressions of angiogenesis biomarkers (VEGF/SDF-1α/HIF-1α) were progressively increased from groups 1 to 3 (all p < 0.0010). The number of small vessels and endothelial cell surface markers (CD31+/vWF+) in the CLI area displayed an identical pattern of INBF (all p < 0.0001). CLI automatic amputation was higher in group 2 than in other groups (all p < 0.001). Phosphoribulokinase (PrkA) and ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) have been proposed to create a heterologous Rubisco-based engineered pathway in Escherichia coli for in situ CO2 recycling. While the feasibility of a Rubisco-based engineered pathway has been shown, heterologous expressions of PrkA and Rubisco also induced physiological responses in E. coli that may compete with CO2 recycling. In this study, the metabolic shifts caused by PrkA and Rubisco were investigated in recombinant strains where ppc and pta genes (encodes phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and phosphate acetyltransferase, respectively) were deleted from E. coli MZLF (E. coli BL21(DE3) Δzwf, ΔldhA, Δfrd). It has been shown that the demand for ATP created by the expression of PrkA significantly enhanced the glucose consumptions of E. coli CC (MZLF Δppc) and E. coli CA (MZLF Δppc, Δpta). The accompanying metabolic shift is suggested to be the mgsA route (the methylglyoxal pathway) which results in the lactate production for reaching the redox balance. The overexpression of Rubisco not only enhanced glucose consumption but also bacterial growth. Instead of the mgsA route, the overproduction of the reducing power was balanced by the ethanol production. It is suggested that Rubisco induces a high demand for acetyl-CoA which is subsequently used by the glyoxylate shunt. Therefore, Rubisco can enhance bacterial growth. This study suggests that responses induced by the expression of PrkA and Rubisco will reach a new energy balance profile inside the cell. The root is the main site of nitrogen (N) acquisition and aluminum (Al) toxicity. The objective of this study is to investigate whether liming and cultivation of an Al-tolerant rice (Oryza sativa L.) cultivar can improve root growth, thereby increasing N acquisition by rice plants in acid paddy soil. Two rice cultivars ('B690', Al-sensitive, and 'Yugeng5', Al-tolerant) were cultivated with 15N-labeled urea, and with or without lime in an acid paddy soil (pH 4.9) in pots. We examined root and shoot growth, soil pH, soil exchangeable Al, N uptake, 15N distribution in plant-soil system, and fertilizer N recovery efficiency. Results showed that liming improved the root growth of 'B690' by decreasing soil exchangeable Al concentrations, in both N-limited and N-fertilized soils. Liming enhanced the N uptake of 'B690' only in the absence of N fertilizer. The root weight of 'Yugeng5' was greater than that of 'B690' without lime, but the two cultivars showed similar N uptake. The fertilizer N recovery efficiency and N loss did not differ significantly between limed and non-limed conditions, or between the two rice cultivars. Thus, liming an Al-sensitive rice cultivar and cultivating an Al-tolerant one improves root growth, but does not enhance fertilizer N recovery efficiency in the present acid paddy soil. Vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and insufficiency (VDI) are common among exclusively breastfeeding infants. However, epidemiological evidence for the prevalence of VDD in infants during their first year of life in Taiwan has never been found. This trial determined the prevalence of VDD and VDI and the association between dietary vitamin D and vitamin D nutritional status in Northern Taiwan. A cross-sectional study was conducted on infants who returned to well-baby examinations from October 2012 to January 2014 in three hospitals: Shin Kong Wu Ho-Su Memorial Hospital, Taipei Medical University Hospital, and Shuang Ho Hospital. The specific vitamin D cut-off concentrations for VDD, VDI, and VDS are 25(OH)D3 levels ≤20, 21–29, and ≥30 (ng/mL). Overall, 481 infants' parents completed a questionnaire comprising questions related to vitamin D nutritional status, including weekly time outdoors, breastfeeding status, anthropometric measurement, and assessment of dietary intake, including milk and complementary food. The results revealed that 197 (41%) and 212 (44%) of infants in their first year of life had VDI and VDD, respectively, by the Endocrine Society guidelines. Breastfed infants had a higher prevalence of VDI (86.1%) than did mixed-fed (51.9%) and formula-fed (38.5%) infants (p < 0.001). The prevalence of VDD was 55.4% in infants aged under six months but increased to 61.6% in infants aged over six months. Infants in the VDI and VDD groups had the same anthropometrics as those in the vitamin D sufficiency (VDS) group. Our results revealed that 25(OH)D3 had a negative correlation with the intact parathyroid hormone (iPTH) when the serum 25(OH)D3 level ≤20 ng/mL (r = −0.21, p = 0.001). The VDS group had a higher total vitamin D intake than did the VDI and VDD groups, which was mainly obtained from infant formula. Our data revealed that dietary vitamin D intake and birth season were major indicators in predicting VDD. Lower dietary vitamin D intake and born in winter and spring significantly increased the odds ratio (OR) for VDI by 1.15 (95% CI 1.09–1.20) and 2.02 (95% CI 1.10–3.70), respectively, and that for VDD by 1.23 (95% CI 1.16–1.31) and 2.37 (95% CI 1.35–4.17) without covariates adjustment, respectively. Furthermore, ORs for VDI and VDD significantly differed after adjustment for covariates. In conclusion, the prevalence of VDI and VDD were high in infants during the first year of life. Breastfeeding infants had difficulty in obtaining sufficient vitamin D from diet. In cases where the amount of sun exposure that is safe and sufficient to improve vitamin D status is unclear, breastfed infants aged below one year old are recommended to be supplemented with vitamin D. Iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA) typically occur in developing countries. Notably, ID and IDA can affect an infant's emotion, cognition, and development. Breast milk is considered the best food for infants. However, recent studies have indicated that breastfeeding for more than six months increases the risk of ID. This study investigated the prevalence of ID and IDA, as well as the association between feeding type and iron nutritional status in northern Taiwan. A cross-sectional study was conducted on infants who returned to the well-baby clinic for routine examination from October 2012 to January 2014. Overall, 509 infants aged 1–12 months completed the iron nutritional status analysis, anthropometric measurement, and dietary intake assessment, including milk and complementary foods. The results revealed that 49 (10%) and 21 (4%) infants in their first year of life had ID and IDA, respectively, based on the World Health Organization criteria. Breastfed infants had a higher prevalence rate of ID and IDA than mixed-fed and formula-fed infants (p < 0.001). Regarding biomarkers of iron status, plasma hemoglobin (Hb), ferritin, and transferrin saturation (%) levels were significantly lower in ID and IDA groups. The prevalence of ID and IDA were 3.7% and 2.7%, respectively, in infants under six months of age, but increased to 20.4% and 6.6%, respectively, in infants above six months of age. The healthy group had a higher total iron intake than ID and IDA groups, mainly derived from infant formula. The total dietary iron intake was positively correlated with infants' Hb levels. Compared with formula-fed infants, the logistic regression revealed that the odds ratio for ID was 2.157 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.369–3.399) and that for IDA was 4.196 (95% CI: 1.780–9.887) among breastfed infants (p < 0.001) after adjusted for all confounding factors (including gestational week, birthweight, sex, body weight percentile, body length percentile, age of infants, mothers' BMI, gestational weight gain, education level, and hemoglobin level before delivery). In conclusion, our results determined that breastfeeding was associated with an increased the prevalence of ID and/or IDA, especially in infants above six months. This suggests that mothers who prolonged breastfeed after six months could provide high-quality iron-rich foods to reduce the prevalence of ID and IDA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Myocardial ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury contributes to adverse cardiac outcomes after myocardial ischemia, cardiac surgery, or circulatory arrest. In this study, we evaluated the ability of combined SS31-mitochondria (Mito) therapy to protect heart cells from myocardial IR injury. Adult male SD rats (n = 8/each group) were randomized: group 1 (sham-operated control), group 2 (IR, 30-min ischemia/72 h reperfusion), group 3 (IR-SS31 (2 mg intra-peritoneal injection at 30 min/24 h/48 h after IR)), group 4 (IR-mitochondria (2 mg/derived from donor liver/intra-venous administration/30 min after IR procedure)), and group 5 (IR-SS31-mitochondria). In H9C2 cells, SS31 suppressed menadione-induced oxidative-stress markers (NOX-1, NOX-2, oxidized protein) while it increased SIRT1/SIRT3 expression and ATP levels. In adult male rats 72 h after IR, left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) was highest in sham-operated control animals and lowest in the IR group. LVEF was also higher in IR rats treated with SS31-Mito than untreated IR rats or those treated with Mito or SS31 alone. Areas of fibrosis/collagen-deposition showed the opposite pattern. Likewise, levels of oxidative-stress markers (NOX-1, NOX-2, oxidized protein), inflammatory markers (MMP-9, CD11, IL-1β, TNF-α), apoptotic markers (mitochondrial-Bax, cleaved-caspase-3, PARP), fibrosis markers (p-Smad3, TGF-β), DNA-damage (γ-H2AX), sarcomere-length, and pressure/volume overload markers (BNP, β-MHC) all showed a pattern opposite that of LVEF. Conversely, anti-apoptotic (BMP-2, Smad1/5) and energy integrity (PGC-1α/mitochondrial cytochrome-C) markers exhibited a pattern identical to that of LVEF. This study demonstrates that the combined SS31-Mito therapy is superior to either therapy alone for protecting myocardium from IR injury and indicates that the responsible mechanisms involved increased SIRT1/SIRT3 expression, which suppresses inflammation and oxidative stress and protects mitochondrial integrity. Glycine N-methyltransferase (GNMT) regulates S-adenosylmethionine (SAMe), a methyl donor in methylation. Over-expressed SAMe may cause neurogenic capacity reduction and memory impairment. GNMT knockout mice (GNMT-KO) was applied as an experimental model to evaluate its effect on neurons. In this study, proteins from brain tissues were studied using proteomic approaches, Haemotoxylin and Eosin staining, immunohistochemistry, Western blotting, and ingenuity pathway analysis. The expression of Receptor-interacting protein 1(RIPK1) and Caspase 3 were up-regulated and activity-dependent neuroprotective protein (ADNP) was down-regulated in GNMT-KO mice regardless of the age. Besides, proteins related to neuropathology, such as excitatory amino acid transporter 2, calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase type II subunit alpha, and Cu-Zn superoxide dismutase were found only in the group of aged wild-type mice; 4-aminobutyrate amino transferase, limbic system-associated membrane protein, sodium- and chloride-dependent GABA transporter 3 and ProSAAS were found only in the group of young GNMT-KO mice and are related to function of neurons; serum albumin and Rho GDP dissociation inhibitor 1 were found only in the group of aged GNMT-KO mice and are connected to neurodegenerative disorders. With proteomic analyses, a pathway involving Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) signal was found to be associated with aging. The GnRH pathway could provide additional information on the mechanism of aging and non-aging related neurodegeneration, and these protein markers may be served in developing future therapeutic treatments to ameliorate aging and prevent diseases.

Dietary leucine supplementation has been explored for the therapeutic intervention of obesity and obesity-induced metabolic dysfunctions. In this study, we aim to examine the effects of dietary leucine supplementation in db/db mice. Mice were treated with or without leucine (1.5% w / v ) in drinking water for 12 weeks. The leucine supplement was found to reduce insulin resistance and hepatic steatosis in db/db mice. Using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR)-based lipidomics, we found that the reduction of hepatic triglyceride synthesis was correlated with attenuated development of fatty liver. In addition, diabetic nephropathy (DN) was also ameliorated by leucine. Using liquid chromatography⁻time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-TOF MS)-based urine metabolomics analysis, we found that the disturbance of the tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle was reversed by leucine. The beneficial effects of leucine were probably due to AMP-activated protein kinase (AMPK) activation in the liver and kidneys of db/db mice. Thus, dietary leucine supplementation may potentially be a nutritional intervention to attenuate hepatic steatosis and early DN in type II diabetes.

Silk fibroin (SF) is a protein with bulky hydrophobic domains and can be easily purified as sericin-free silk-based biomaterial. Silk fibroin modified chitosan nanoparticle (SF-CSNP), a biocompatible material, has been widely used as a potential drug delivery system. Our current investigation studied the bio-effects of the SF-CSNP uptake by liver cells. In this experiment, the characterizations of SF-CSNPs were measured by particle size analysis and protein assay. The average size of the SF-CSNP was 311.9 ± 10.7 nm, and the average zeta potential was +13.33 ± 0.3 mV. The SF coating on the SF-CSNP was 6.27 ± 0.17 μg/mL. Moreover, using proteomic approaches, several proteins involved in the ubiquitin proteasome pathway were identified by analysis of differential protein expressions of HepG2 cell uptake the SF-CSNP. Our experimental results have demonstrated that the SF-CSNP may be involved in liver cancer cell survival and proliferation.
