Overexpression of the thymidine phosphorylase (TP) enzyme induces angiogenesis, which eventually leads to metastasis and tumor growth. The crucial role of TP in cancer development makes it an important target for anticancer drug discovery. Currently, there is only one US-FDA-approved drug, i.e., Lonsurf, a combination of trifluridine and tipiracil, for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer. Unfortunately, numerous adverse effects are associated with its use, such as myelosuppression, anemia, and neutropenia. Since the last few decades, the discovery of new, safe, and effective TP inhibitory agents has been rigorously pursued. In the present study, we evaluated a series of previously synthesized dihydropyrimidone derivatives 1–40 for their TP inhibitory potential. Compounds 1, 12, and 33 showed a good activity with IC50 = 314.0 ± 0.90, 303.5 ± 0.40, and 322.6 ± 1.60 µM, respectively. The results of mechanistic studies revealed that compounds 1, 12, and 33 were the non-competitive inhibitors. These compounds were also evaluated for cytotoxicity against 3T3 (mouse fibroblast) cells and were found to be non-cytotoxic. Finally, the molecular docking suggested the plausible mechanism of non-competitive inhibition of TP. The current study thus identifies some dihydropyrimidone derivatives as potential inhibitors of TP, which can be further optimized as leads for cancer treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

With its excellent electrical and mechanical properties and the rapid development of its device fabrication technologies, laser-induced graphene (LIG) has played an important role in the field of wearable technologies since its discovery in 2014. In recent years, with the relentless development of wearable devices, newly developed LIG-based wearable devices also possess multifunction and intelligence characteristics. This review is aimed toward two of the most important fields related to the development of LIG, namely, health care and human–computer interaction (HCI). We introduce multifunctional and intelligent LIG-based wearable systems for health care and HCI developed over the recent years, sorting out their design ideas, preparation process, performance, and application. Continuous blood pressure (BP) monitoring is of great significance for the real-time monitoring and early prevention of cardiovascular diseases. Recently, wearable BP monitoring devices have made great progress in the development of daily BP monitoring because they adapt to long-term and high-comfort wear requirements. However, the research and development of wearable continuous BP monitoring devices still face great challenges such as obvious motion noise and slow dynamic response speeds. The pulse wave transit time method which is combined with photoplethysmography (PPG) waves and electrocardiogram (ECG) waves for continuous BP monitoring has received wide attention due to its advantages in terms of excellent dynamic response characteristics and high accuracy. Here, we review the recent state-of-art wearable continuous BP monitoring devices and related technology based on the pulse wave transit time; their measuring principles, design methods, preparation processes, and properties are analyzed in detail. Electronic skin (e-skin) has attracted tremendous interest due to its diverse potential applications, including in physiological signal detection, health monitoring, and artificial throats. However, the major drawbacks of traditional e-skin are the weak adhesion of substrates, incompatibility between sensitivity and stretchability, and its single function. These shortcomings limit the application of e-skin and increase the complexity of its multifunctional integration. Herein, the synergistic network of crosslinked SWCNTs within and between multilayered graphene layers was directly drip coated onto the PU thin film with self-adhesion to fabricate versatile e-skin. The excellent mechanical properties of prepared e-skin arise from the sufficient conductive paths guaranteed by SWCNTs in small and large deformation under various strains. The prepared e-skin exhibits a low detection limit, as small as 0.5% strain, and compatibility between sensitivity and stretchability with a gauge factor (GF) of 964 at a strain of 0–30%, and 2743 at a strain of 30–60%. In physiological signals detection application, the e-skin demonstrates the detection of subtle motions, such as artery pulse and blinking, as well as large body motions, such as knee joint bending, elbow movement, and neck movement. In artificial throat application, the e-skin integrates sound recognition and sound emitting and shows clear and distinct responses between different throat muscle movements and different words for sound signal acquisition and recognition, in conjunction with superior sound emission performance with a sound spectrum response of 71 dB (f = 12.5 kHz). Overall, the presented comprehensive study of novel materials, structures, properties, and mechanisms offers promising potential in physiological signals detection and artificial throat applications. The hardness of materials is a complicated physical quantity, and the hardness models that are widely used do not function well for transition metal light element (TMLE) compounds. The overestimation of actual hardness is a common phenomenon in hardness models. In this work, high-quality Mn3N2 bulk samples were synthesized under high temperature and high pressure (HTHP) to investigate this issue. The hardness of Mn3N2 was found to be 9.9 GPa, which was higher than the hardness predicted using Guo's model of 7.01 GPa. Through the combination of the first-principle simulations and experimental analysis, it was found that the metal bonds, which are generally considered helpless to the hardness of crystals, are of importance when evaluating the hardness of TMLE compounds. Metal bonds were found to improve the hardness in TMLEs without strong covalent bonds. This work provides new considerations for the design and synthesis of high-hardness TMLE materials, which can be used to form wear-resistant coatings over the surfaces of typical alloy materials such as stainless steels. Moreover, our findings provide a basis for establishing a more comprehensive theoretical model of hardness in TMLEs, which will provide further insight to improve the hardness values of various alloys. High-quality P6322 Mn2N0.86 samples were synthesised using a high-pressure metathesis reaction, and the properties of the material were investigated. The measurements revealed that the Vickers hardness was 7.47 GPa, which is less than that predicted by commonly used theoretical models. At low air pressure, Mn2N0.86 and MnO coexist at 500 to 600 °C, and by excluding air, we succeeded in producing Mn4N by heating Mn2N0.86 in nitrogen atmosphere; we carefully studied this process with thermogravimetry and differential scanning calorimetry (TG-DSC). This gives a hint that to control temperature, air pressure and gas concentration might be an effective way to prepare fine Mn-N-O catalysis. Magnetic measurements indicated that ferromagnetism and antiferromagnetism coexist within Mn2N0.86 at room temperature and that these magnetic properties are induced by nitrogen vacancies. Ab intio simulation was used to probe the nature of the magnetism in greater detail. With the rapidly aging society and increased concern for personal cardiovascular health, novel, flexible electrodes suitable for electrocardiogram (ECG) signal monitoring are in demand. Based on the excellent electrical and mechanical properties of graphene and the rapid development of graphene device fabrication technologies, graphene-based ECG electrodes have recently attracted much attention, and many flexible graphene electrodes with excellent performance have been developed. To understand the current research progress of graphene-based ECG electrodes and help researchers clarify current development conditions and directions, we systematically review the recent advances in graphene-based flexible ECG electrodes. Graphene electrodes are classified as bionic, fabric-based, biodegradable, laser-induced/scribed, modified-graphene, sponge-like, invasive, etc., based on their design concept, structural characteristics, preparation methods, and material properties. Moreover, some categories are further divided into dry or wet electrodes. Then, their performance, including electrode–skin impedance, signal-to-noise ratio, skin compatibility, and stability, is analyzed. New, stable stoichiometries in Be-P systems are investigated up to 100 GPa by the CALYPSO structure prediction method. Along with the BeP2-I41/amd structure, we identify two novel compounds of Be3P2-P-421m and Be3P2-C2/m. It should be noted that the Be-P compounds are predicted to be energetically unfavorable above 40 GPa. As can be seen, interesting structures may be experimentally synthesizable at modest pressure. Our results indicate that at 33.2 GPa, the most stable ambient-pressure tetragonal Be3P2-P-421m transitions to the monoclinic Be3P2-C2/m structure. Moreover, the predicted Be3P2-P-421m and Be3P2-C2/m phases are energetically favored compared with the Be3P2-Ia-3 structure synthesized experimentally. Electronic structure calculations reveal that BeP2-I41/amd, Be3P2-P-421m, and Be3P2-C2/m are all semiconductors with a narrow band gap. COVID-19 is a highly contagious human infectious disease caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), and the war with the virus is still underway. Since no specific drugs have been made available yet and there is an imbalance between supply and demand for vaccines, early diagnosis and isolation are essential to control the outbreak. Current nucleic acid testing methods require high sample quality and laboratory conditions, which cannot meet flexible applications. Here, we report a laser-induced graphene field-effect transistor (LIG-FET) for detecting SARS-CoV-2. The FET was manufactured by different reduction degree LIG, with an oyster reef-like porous graphene channel to enrich the binding point between the virus protein and sensing area. After immobilizing specific antibodies in the channel, the FET can detect the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein in 15 min at a concentration of 1 pg/mL in phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and 1 ng/mL in human serum. In addition, the sensor shows great specificity to the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2. Our sensors can realize fast production for COVID-19 rapid testing, as each LIG-FET can be fabricated by a laser platform in seconds. It is the first time that LIG has realized a virus sensing FET without any sample pretreatment or labeling, which paves the way for low-cost and rapid detection of COVID-19. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we explore whether interparticle spacing affects steady-state and transient-state optical properties by comparing close-packed CdSe/ZnS–quantum dots (QDs) and CdSe/ZnS–QDs dispersed in polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). High–pressure is an effective physical means to adjust the interparticle spacing of QDs, which may artificially expand the application of QDs further. The results under high–pressure indicate that it is the reduced interparticle spacing rather than the enhanced quantum confinement effect with volume compression that has a stronger effect on exciton relaxation of CdSe/ZnS–QDs. Sintering solidification is an effective way to treat soil contaminated with nonvolatile heavy metal. The ceramsite prepared from contaminated soil after sintering can be used as lightweight aggregate in concrete. The preparation process of ceramsite can be divided into two steps: granulation and sintering. As one of the key processes, granulation is directly related to the final solidification and physical properties of ceramsite, and the properties of the clay are directly related to the granulation process. In this work, clays from different regions granulated with disc granulation were studied and compared. The results showed that different clays had significantly different performances in granulation with the same granulation system, and each clay had its own best process parameter. The significance analysis showed that the volume surface mean diameter and the reduction ratio had the most significant impact on the granulated fraction among all the factors. No matter which process parameter was used, as the particle size increased, the granulated fraction increased first and then decreased, and the best results were obtained when the average volume diameter was about 20.5 µm. Furthermore, as the reduction ratio increased, the granulated fraction decreased. These two factors are easy to measure and can be used for predicting the granulation effect of different clays, which can further guide industrial production. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Amorphous carbon (a-C) films are attracting considerable attention to due their large optical band gap (Eopt) range of 1–4 eV. But the hopping conducting mechanism of boron doping a-C (a-C:B) is still mysterious. To exploring the intrinsic reasons behind the semiconductor properties of a-C:B, in this work, the boron doping a-C (a-C:B) nano-film was prepared, and the growth rate and Eopt changing were analyzed by controlling the different experimental conditions of magnetron sputtering. A rapid deposition rate of 10.55 nm/min was obtained. The Eopt is reduced from 3.19 eV to 2.78 eV by improving the substrate temperature and sputtering power. The proportion of sp2/sp3 increasing was uncovered with narrowing the Eopt. The shrinking Eopt can be attributed to the fact that boron atoms act as a fluxing agent to promote carbon atoms to form sp2 hybridization at low energy. Furthermore, boron atoms can impede the formation of σ bonds in carbon atom sp3 hybridization by forming B–C bonds with high energy, and induce the sp3 hybridization transfer to sp2 hybridization.
