Serpentine (Mg3Si2O5(OH)4), like quartz, dolomite and magnesite minerals, is a versatile mineral group characterized by silica and magnesium silicate contents with multiple polymorphic phases. Among the phases composed of antigorite, lizardite, and chrysotile, lizardite and chrysotile are the most prevalent phases in the serpentinites studied here. The formation process of serpentinites, which arise from the hydrothermal alteration of peridotites, influences the ratio of light rare earth elements (LREE) to heavy rare earth elements (HREE). In serpentinites, the ratio of light rare earth elements (LREE)/heavy rare earth elements (HREE) provides insights into formation conditions, geochemical evolution, and magmatic processes. The depletion of REE compositions in serpentinites indicates high melting extraction for fore-arc/mantle wedge serpentinites. The studied serpentinites show a depletion in REE concentrations compared to chondrite values, with HREE exhibiting a lesser degree of depletion compared to LREE. The high ΣLREE/ΣHREE ratios of the samples are between 0.16 and 4 ppm. While Ce shows a strong negative anomaly (0.1–12), Eu shows a weak positive anomaly (0.1–0.3). This indicates that fluid interacts significantly with rock during serpentinization, and highly incompatible elements (HIEs) gradually become involved in the serpentinization process. While high REE concentrations indicate mantle wedge serpentinites, REE levels are lower in mid-ocean ridge serpentinites. The enrichment of LREE in the analyzed samples reflects melt/rock interaction with depleted mantle and is consistent with rock–water interaction during serpentinization. The gradual increase in highly incompatible elements (HIEs) suggests that they result from fluid integration into the system and a subduction process. The large differential thermal analysis (DTA) peak at 810–830 °C is an important sign of dehydration, transformation reactions and thermal decomposition, and is compatible with H2O phyllosilicates in the mineral structure losing water at this temperature. In SEM images, chrysotile, which has a fibrous structure, and lizardite, which has a flat appearance, transform into talc as a result of dehydration with increasing temperature. Therefore, the sudden temperature drop observed in DTA graphs is an indicator of crystal form transformation and CO2 loss. In this study, the mineralogical and structural properties and the formation of serpentinites were examined for the first time using thermo-gravimetric analysis methods. In addition, the mineralogical and physical properties of serpentinites can be recommended for industrial use as additives in polymers or in the adsorption of organic pollutants. As a result, the high refractory nature of examined serpentine suggests that it is well-suited for applications involving high temperatures. Alunite is used as a representative mineral for indicating deposits in lithocaps, and lithocaps are generally related to the porphyry–(high-sulfidation) epithermal mineralization system. The study of alunite is of theoretical and exploration significance for prospecting potential underlying porphyry and epithermal deposits. Studies on alunite geochemistry have made breakthroughs, but there is little research on alunite mineralogy, for example, using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images, differential thermal analysis (DTA), and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR). This study mainly focuses on alunite micromorphological characteristics, weight loss changes with temperature, and ionic group structure, aiming to identify the relationship between these features and indications for prospecting. The Fanshan lithocap is located in the northwest part of the Luzong basin, Anhui province of China, and it can potentially be used for exploring porphyry and epithermal deposits. Fanshan alunite is formed in two stages with three types of alunite. IA alunite is formed in the early hydrothermal stage and replaces felsic minerals in the Zhuanqiao Formation, IB alunite is formed in the later hydrothermal stage and fills in open spaces with bladed particles, and II alunite is the product of pyrite oxidation and reaction with other minerals in the supergene stage. Alunite electron microprobe data and energy-dispersive spectroscopy data further confirm temperature decreases with hydrothermal evolution, and the presence of a high-sulfidation epithermal system in the Luzong basin. Aside from the forming environment, SWIR, and geochemistry of alunite, there are other indication indexes; for example, the larger peak values at 3480 cm−1 and smaller peak values at 1080 cm−1 in FT-IR spectra and the deeper exothermic valleys at 750 °C and steeper weight loss slopes in the DTA curve suggest a favorable formation environment for alunite and provide valuable indications for deposit exploration and assessments of mineralization potential. Quality quartz sand is globally utilized in construction due to its availability and economic factors, especially in the production of composite cements. Despite its positive properties, quartz sand also has several disadvantages. The dilation of quartz sand can be technologically significant for certain high-temperature applications. This dilation has a non-continuous character with sharp volume change caused by the phase transformation from β to α SiO2 at temperatures around 573 °C. The extent of dilation depends on various factors such as compaction, grain size, the quantity of sand, as well as the shape and character of the grain and chemical purity, particularly the SiO2 content. In this study, six types of quartz sand from different locations in Central Europe were examined, and the influence of chemical composition and grain shape was correlated with the final dilation of these samples. Evaluation methods included X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy (XRFS), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), differential thermal analysis (DTA), and linear thermal expansion analysis. It was found that angular grains, despite their chemical purity, may exhibit minimal dilation. Conversely, the least suitable combination in terms of dilation appears to be a high SiO2 content and high roundness of grains with a smooth surface. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new series of some biologically active Cr(III), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) complexes was synthesized from the reaction of Ethyl 6-amino-4-(4-chlorophenyl)-5-cyano-2-methyl-4H-pyran-3-carboxylate (L) with the previous biological metals in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline monohydrate (Phen). The structures of the obtained L along with their complexes were authenticated by different analytical and spectral techniques. The data prove that L chelates with all metal ions as bidentate through the nitrogen of the amino group and the nitrogen of the cyano group. Furthermore, Phen chelated with metal ions via two nitrogen atoms. The molar conductance values reflect that all complexes are electrolyte, confirming the 1:3 electrolytic natures for trivalent metal ions and 1:2 electrolytic for bivalent metal ions. The thermal stability and the general thermal decomposition pathways of metal complexes, L, and Phen were evaluating according to the thermogravimetric technique. The activation thermodynamic parameters were estimated from TG curves by utilizing Horowitz–Metzger (HM) and Coats–Redfern (CR) techniques. Powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis proved that L, Cu(II), and Zn(II) compounds have a crystalline nature, whereas, Cr(III), Fe(III), Co(II), and Ni(II) complexes are semicrystalline. The investigated compounds were examined in vitro for their antimicrobial activity towards G(+ve) Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis and G(−ve) Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria, and two fungi: Candida albicans and Aspergillus flavus. According to the findings, the Co(II) complex has a significant efficiency toward bacteria, additionally, Cr(III) complex is highly significant towards fungal strains. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ultra-responsive single-crystal silicon MEMS thermopiles for differential thermal analysis (DTA) are developed. Facilitated by a unique "microholes interetch and sealing (MIS)" technique, pairs of suspended thermopiles are batch fabricated in a differential form, with high-density (54 pairs) n-type/p-type single-crystal silicon thermocouples integrated within each thermopile (sample area ~0.045 mm2). The fabricated MEMS thermopile sensors exhibit outstanding power responsivity of 99.5 V/W and temperature responsivity of 27.8 mV/°C, which are more than 4 times higher than those reported for material thermal analysis. The high-responsivity MEMS DTA chips allow us to accurately measure the indium melting point at different heating rates of ~1–100 °C/s. We also perform DTA measurement of the dehydration process of CuSO4·5H2O and the crystals show three stages of losing water of crystallization before becoming anhydrous copper sulfate salt. Titanium zirconium molybdenum (TZM) is a high strength at high temperature alloy with favorable properties for use in high temperature structural applications. Use of TZM in high pressure, gas-containing autoclave systems was recently demonstrated for the ammonothermal method. Use of indium (In) in the system is desired, though there is a general lack of literature and understanding on the corrosion and impact of In on the mechanical properties of TZM. This study reports for the first time the mechanical properties of TZM after exposure to metallic In at temperatures up to 1000 °C. Static corrosion testing of TZM in In were performed at 750 °C and 1000 °C for 14 days. A microstructure analysis was performed suggesting no visible alteration of the grain structure. Differential thermal analysis (DTA) was performed to investigate compound formation between In and the primary constituents of TZM yielding no measurable reactions and hence no noticeable compound formation. X-ray energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) line scans across the TZM-In interface revealed no measurable mass transport of In into the TZM matrix. These results were confirmed using X-ray diffraction (XRD). Given the apparent inertness of TZM to In, mechanical properties of TZM after exposure to In were measured at test temperatures ranging from 22 °C to 800 °C and compared to unexposed, reference TZM samples from the same material stock. Tensile properties, including ultimate tensile strength, yield strength and total elongation, were found to be comparable between In-exposed and unexposed TZM samples. Impact fracture toughness testing (Charpy) performed at temperatures ranging from −196 °C to 800 °C showed that TZM is unaffected upon exposure to In. Tensile testing indicated ductile behavior at room temperature (slow strain rate) whereas impact testing (high strain rate) suggested a ductile to brittle transition temperature between 100 °C and 400 °C. The synthesized glass system with a composition of (80-x) TeO2-10P2O5-10Nb2O5-xKCl mol% (where x = 5, 10, 15, 20, and 25) was successfully fabricated. The density (ρ) and molar volume (Vm) have been calculated. The investigated glasses were characterized using different analysis methods (differential thermal analysis (DTA) and UV-VIS-NIR spectroscopy). The radiation shielding effectiveness of the synthesized glass system was evaluated using different shielding parameters, such as mass and linear attenuation coefficients (MAC, LAC), half-value layer (HVL), mean free path (MFP), effective atomic number (Zeff), and effective electron number (Neff). The results showed that with the increasing potassium chloride (KCl) concentration and decreasing tellurium oxide (TeO2) concentration, the density, refractive index, Urbach energy (Eu), and glass transition temperature (Tg) decreased, while the optical energy gap (Eopt) and thermal stability increased. As the KCl concentration increases, the values of MAC, LAC, and Zeff increase in the following order: TPNK5 % > TPNK10 % > TPNK15 % > TPNK20 % > TPNK25 %. Additionally, the shielding effectiveness of TPNK glass system showed good performance compared with some standard materials. The synthesized glass with a minimum KCl content has both good shielding effectiveness and good optical properties, in addition to reasonable thermal stability, which makes it suitable for shielding and optical applications. Ni-Nb-Zr amorphous membranes, prepared by melt-spinning, show great potential for replacing crystalline Pd-based materials in the field of hydrogen purification to an ultrapure grade (>99.999%). In this study, we investigate the temperature evolution of the structure of an amorphous ribbon with the composition Ni32Nb28Zr30Cu10 (expressed in atom %) by means of XRD and DTA measurements. An abrupt structural expansion is induced between 240 and 300 °C by hydrogenation. This structural modification deeply modifies the hydrogen sorption properties of the membrane, which indeed shows a strong reduction of the hydrogen capacity above 270 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In materials research, the development of polymer nanocomposites (PN) is rapidly emerging as a multidisciplinary research field with results that could broaden the applications of polymers to many different industries. PN are polymer matrices (thermoplastics, thermosets or elastomers) that have been reinforced with small quantities of nano-sized particles, preferably characterized by high aspect ratios, such as layered silicates and carbon nanotubes. Thermal analysis (TA) is a useful tool to investigate a wide variety of properties of polymers and it can be also applied to PN in order to gain further insight into their structure. This review illustrates the versatile applications of TA methods in the emerging field of polymer nanomaterial research, presenting some examples of applications of differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), dynamic mechanical thermal analysis (DMTA) and thermal mechanical analysis (TMA) for the characterization of nanocomposite materials. The results of the study of the three-component system of CuO–V2O5–Ta2O5 oxides showed, inter alia, that in the air atmosphere in one of its cross-sections, i.e., in the CuV2O6–CuTa2O6 system, a new substitutional solid solution with the general formula CuTa2−xVxO6 and homogeneity range for x > 0.0 and x ≤ 0.3 is formed. The influence of the degree of incorporation of V5+ ions into the CuTa2O6 crystal lattice in place of Ta5+ ions on the unit cell volume, thermal stability and IR spectra of the obtained solid solution was determined. Moreover, the value of the band gap energy of the CuTa2−xVxO6 solid solution was estimated in the range of 0.0 < x ≤ 0.3, and on this basis, the new solid solution was classified as a semiconductor. In the work the research on properties of an yttria nanopowder obtained by solution combustion synthesis (SCS) in terms of its application in ceramic technology is presented. In order to characterize the SCS reaction the decomposition of yttrium nitrate, glycine and their solution was investigated using differential thermal analysis coupled with FT-IR spectrometry of the gases emitted during the measurements. The product obtained in the SCS process was characterized in terms of its microstructure, particle size distribution and BET specific surface. Although the obtained powders showed nanoscaled structures, only after calcination at a temperature of 1100 °C nanosized particles were revealed. The calcined powder occurred in an agglomerated state (cumulants mean Zave = 1.3 µm). After milling particle size was successfully decreased to Zave = 0.28 µm. The deagglomerated powder was isostatically densified and tested for sintering ability. The obtained nanopowder showed very high sintering activity as the shrinkage onset was detected already at a temperature of about 1150 °C. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The glasses of three borate systems, Na2O-B2O3, K2O-B2O3 and BaO-B2O3, were studied over a wide range of the compositions by differential thermal analysis (DTA) and X-ray powder diffractometry (XRPD). The thermal parameters obtained by DTA method (the glass transition temperature, Tg, the crystallization onset temperature, Tx, and the melting temperature, Tm) were used to calculate the criteria (coefficients) characterizing glass stability against crystallization. The Lu–Liu, Weinberg and Hrubý coefficients were tested for verification of their consistency with several simple requirements. Since each of the criteria has its drawbacks, the coefficient of glass crystallization ability, Kcr, which meets all of the requirements, was also used. The advantage of this coefficient is demonstrated on the example of the glass powders and the monolithic glasses of the mentioned above borate systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Traffic crashes and other emergencies have impacts on traffic operations in transportation networks, often resulting in non-recurring congestion. Congestion, in turn, may impede the ability of Emergency Medical Services (EMS) to provide timely response to those in need of medical attention. The work in this paper investigated the impact of incidents of varying severity and duration on transportation network performance in the Birmingham (AL, USA) area. The intensity and extent of the impact over space and time were assessed on the basis of average speeds. The analysis of incident scenarios was performed using the Visual Interactive System for Transport Algorithms (VISTA) platform. Moreover, first responders' travel times to the scene of the incident were collected to identify best units for responding, in an effort to improve current dispatching practices. Finally, a secondary incident on the EMS to the hospital was considered to further demonstrate the superiority of Dynamic Traffic Assignment (DTA) over traditional static assignment methods in capturing dynamically changing traffic conditions. The study findings are expected to benefit local transportation planners, traffic engineers, emergency responders, and policy makers by allowing them to assess various response strategies to major incidents and emergencies and select the ones that minimize their potential impacts.
