The paper deals with a grid-connected single-phase battery charger integrated with photovoltaic generators (PVGs). The circuit topology consists of a multilevel architecture based on a Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) rectifier. Its main task is to charge the batteries, primarily from the PVGs, by also assuring to keep their state-of-charge (SOC) balanced. Nevertheless, when the battery SOC overcomes a predefined upper limit, beyond which the charging process could be interrupted, the available PV power can no longer be transferred to the batteries. Therefore, to avoid an undesired curtailment of PV power production, this latter can be supplied to the grid by inverting the system operation. The paper shows how to achieve this result by implementing a dedicated control action based on a multi-step procedure. Numerical investigations are carried out on a 19-level CHB converter implemented in the PLECS environment to validate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed control technique. The adoption of a DFIGs generator in a WECs is characterized by several advantages: robust and flexible system, energy generation in a wide operating range of wind turbines, simplicity of the control system and cost-efficient operation. Despite most DFIG control strategies discussed in literature refer to a nominal operating condition, a smooth startup procedure must be also envisioned to avoid high transient currents in the stator windings resulting from excessive mismatch between grid and open-stator voltages. The paper is focused on the formalization of an experimental procedure aimed to characterize the efficiency behaviour of a Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor-based drive. The characterization is intended to expose the analytical behaviour of the system efficiency by the actual operating condition assigned through torque/speed value. The availability of such a relation in a simple analytical form would allow for real-time adjustment by advanced power management strategies to maximize the whole system efficiency. The proposed method is based on a defined set of measures corresponding to several drive operating conditions. A straightforward elaboration procedure is then formulated with the aim to quantify the different parameters, which intervene in the efficiency characterization. This paper deals with a Power Electronic Transformer (PET) topology for a 3-phase AC distribution grid. In the discussed topology, a Modular Multilevel Converter (MMC) and a Full-Bridge converter are employed for the medium voltage (MV) and the low voltage (LV) side, respectively. By using the space vector, approach a mathematical model for the MMC is presented and a grid-synchronous algorithm is implemented to easily control the power flow through the structure. The MV and LV side converters are linked through a High Frequency (HF) transformer, whose control strategy is a Dual-Active Phase-Shift Control (PSC) with Square Wave Modulation (SQM). This technique is combined with a predictive algorithm, which is able to keep each leg's capacitors' voltages balanced both in stationary and in transient conditions. This paper proposes a new mathematical model of modular multilevel converters for battery electric vehicles with space-vectors enabling a critical analysis of cell balancing for the battery management system. In particular, the requirements for power balancing and the actual number of degrees of freedom of the control are investigated. The paper shows that the traditional approach of cell balancing is a special case of the proposed control methodology. Numerical analyses with Matlab/Simulin™ highlight the reasons of the slow response of the standard balancing technique for specific operating conditions of the battery electric vehicle. In recent years the aerospace industry has made a growing effort to develop a quieter and more environmentally friendly aircraft. In particular, several research activities have been focused on innovative solutions aimed at the design/optimization of an on-board electric system fully compatible with this new approach. A first important step in the evolution towards an All Electric Aircraft (AEA) is the replacement of the hydraulic actuators with fully electric ones. The transition process is not easy to carry out, since weight, size and reliability represent highly critical issues for aircraft applications. In this context, the significant improvements in semiconductor technologies can be exploited as a critical means to overcome the constraints mentioned. Indeed, this work proposes a Silicon Carbide (SiC) based Power Factor Correction (PFC) converter, whose design and control have been tailored in order to properly supply a wide range of on-board Electro-Mechanical Actuators (EMA). In particular, while the adopted circuit topology allows for power factor correction and bi-directional power flow, the SiC technology, thanks to the higher efficiency with respect to other semiconductor-based technologies, leads to a significant reduction in the overall system weight/volume. Furthermore, to meet the strict requirements in terms of dynamic and steady state performance imposed by the application, a novel adaptive regulator is conceived. Marine energy sources represent an attractive and inexhaustible reservoir able to contribute to the fulfillment of the world energy demand in accordance with climate/energy regulatory frameworks. Wave energy converter (WEC) integration into the main grid requires both the maximization of the harvested energy and the proper management of the generation variability. The present paper focuses on both these mentioned issues. More specifically, it presents an embedded point pivoted absorber (PPA) and its related control strategy aimed at maximizing the harvested energy. Experimental and numerical investigations have been carried out in a wave/towing tank facility in order to derive the design characteristics of the full-scale model and demonstrate the validity and effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. This work deals with the design of a three-phase grid-tied photovoltaic (PV) cascade H-bridge inverter for distributed power conversion. The power balancing among the phases must be properly addressed. In fact, an intra-phase power imbalance—arising from uneven irradiance and temperature conditions—generates a per-phase power imbalance. This latter can be compensated by the injection of a proper zero-sequence voltage, while the intra-phase balance is ensured by means of a hybrid modulation method which is able to guarantee the handling of unequal DC (Direct Current) sources, stable circuit operation, and maximization of PV power production. The digital controller is developed and tested in Matlab/Simulink environment integrated with XSG (Xilinx System Generator), thus allowing an easy transfer on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) platform and accurately describing the behavior of a real hardware implementation. In the context of grid connected photovoitaic (PV) generation systems, there are two paramount aspects regarding the Maximum Power Point Tracking (MPPT) of the photovoltaic units and the continuity of the service. The most diffused MPPT algorithms are based on either perturb and observe, or on an incremental conductance approach and need both PV current and voltage measurements. Several topology reconfigurable converters are also associated with the PV plants, guaranteeing fault-tolerant features. The generation continuity can also be assured by interleaved inverters, which keep the system operating at reduced maximum power in case of failure. In this paper, an evolution of a hysteresis based MPPT algorithm is presented, based on the measurement of only one voltage, together with a novel space vector modulation suitable for a two-channel three-phase grid connected interleaved inverter. The proposed MMPT algorithm and modulation technique are tested by means of several numerical analyses on a PV generation system of about 200 kW maximum power. The results testify the validity of the proposed strategies, showing good performance, even during a fault occurrence and in the presence of deep shading conditions. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study attempt to fill the research gap by figuring out the dynamic effects of foreign capital inflows effect on renewable energy and non-renewable consumption by using the time series non-linear ARDL approach for BRICS from 1991 to 2019. Non-linear ARDL estimates show that positive change in foreign capital inflows has a positive effect on renewable consumption in Brazil, India, and South Africa in long run. Also, the negative change in foreign capital inflows exhibits negatively liked with renewable energy consumption in BRICS economies, except Russia in long run. We find that positive shock in foreign capital inflows tends to increase non-renewable energy consumption in BRICS except India in the long run. Finding suggests that negative change in foreign capital inflows has negative impacts on non-renewable energy consumption in India and Brazil, while the positive effect in only China in the long run. At present, due to the errors of wind power, solar power and various types of load forecasting, the optimal scheduling results of the integrated energy system (IES) will be inaccurate, which will affect the economic and reliable operation of the integrated energy system. In order to solve this problem, a day-ahead and intra-day optimal scheduling model of integrated energy system considering forecasting uncertainty is proposed in this paper, which takes the minimum operation cost of the system as the target, and different processing strategies are adopted for the model. In the day-ahead time scale, according to day-ahead load forecasting, an integrated demand response (IDR) strategy is formulated to adjust the load curve, and an optimal scheduling scheme is obtained. In the intra-day time scale, the predicted value of wind power, solar power and load power are represented by fuzzy parameters to participate in the optimal scheduling of the system, and the output of units is adjusted based on the day-ahead scheduling scheme according to the day-ahead forecasting results. The simulation of specific examples shows that the integrated demand response can effectively adjust the load demand and improve the economy and reliability of the system operation. At the same time, the operation cost of the system is related to the reliability of the accurate prediction of wind power, solar power and load power. Increasing converter power density is a problem of topical interest. This paper discusses an interleaved approach of the efficiency increase in the buck-boost stage of an inverter with unfolding circuit in terms of losses in semiconductors, output voltage ripples and power density. Main trends in the power converter development are reviewed. A losses model was designed and used for the proposed solution to find an optimal number of interleaved cells. It describes static and dynamic losses in semiconductor switches for buck and boost mode. The presented calculation results demonstrate the efficiency of the interleaved approach for photovoltaic system. 1 kW power converter prototype was designed with two parallel dc-dc cells for experimental verification of obtained theoretical results. Across the world, the impact of increasing electric vehicle (EV) adoption requires a better understanding. The authors hypothesize that the introduction of EV's will cause significant overloading within low voltage distribution grids. To study this, several low voltage networks were reconstructed based on the literature and modelled using DigSilent Powerfactory, taking into account the stochastic variability of household electricity consumption, EV usage, and solar irradiance. The study incorporates two distinct usage scenarios—residential loads with varying EV penetrations without and with distributed grid tied generation of electricity. The Monte-Carlo simulation took into account population demographics and showed that in urban networks, EV introduction could lead to higher cable loading percentages than allowed, and in rural networks, this could lead to voltage drops beyond the allowed limits. Distributed generation (DG) in the form of solar power could significantly offset both these overloading characteristics, as well as the active and reactive power demands of the network, by between 10–50%, depending on the topology of the network. This paper focuses on the performance analysis of a sensorless control for a Doubly Fed Induction Generator (DFIG) in grid-connected operation for turbine-based wind generation systems. With reference to a conventional stator flux based Field Oriented Control (FOC), a full-order adaptive observer is implemented and a criterion to calculate the observer gain matrix is provided. The observer provides the estimated stator flux and an estimation of the rotor position is also obtained through the measurements of stator and rotor phase currents. Due to parameter inaccuracy, the rotor position estimation is affected by an error. As a novelty of the discussed approach, the rotor position estimation error is considered as an additional machine parameter, and an error tracking procedure is envisioned in order to track the DFIG rotor position with better accuracy. In particular, an adaptive law based on the Lyapunov theory is implemented for the tracking of the rotor position estimation error, and a current injection strategy is developed in order to ensure the necessary tracking sensitivity around zero rotor voltages. The roughly evaluated rotor position can be corrected by means of the tracked rotor position estimation error, so that the corrected rotor position is sent to the FOC for the necessary rotating coordinate transformation. An extensive experimental analysis is carried out on an 11 kW, 4 poles, 400 V/50 Hz induction machine testifying the quality of the sensorless control. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we study a wind energy conversion system designed for domestic use in urban or agricultural areas. We first present the turbine, which was specifically designed to be installed on the buildings that it supplies. Based on turbine characteristics, we perform analytical sizing of a Permanent Magnet Vernier Machine (PMVM), which will be used as a generator in our energy conversion system. We show the influence of this generator on system operation by studying its association with a PWM rectifier and with a diode bridge rectifier. We then seek to improve generator design so that the turbine operates closely to maximum power points, while using a simple and robust energy conversion system. The paper deals with design and control of a fault tolerant and reconfigurable photovoltaic converter integrating a Battery Energy Storage System as a standby backup energy resource. When a failure occurs, an appropriate control method makes the energy conversion system capable of operating in open-delta configuration in parallel with the grid as well as in islanded mode. In case network voltage is lacking due to heavy anomalies or maintenance reasons, the proposed control system is able to quickly disconnect the inverter from the grid while ensuring the energy continuity to the local load and the emergency fixtures by means of the integrated battery packs. In particular, the paper proposes a fast islanding detection method essential for the correct operation of the control system. This specific technique is based on the Hilbert transform of the voltage of the point of common coupling, and it identifies the utility lack in a period of time equal to half a grid cycle in the best case (i.e., 10 ms), thus resulting in good speed performance fully meeting the standard requirements. A thorough numerical investigation is carried out with reference to a representative case study in order to demonstrate the feasibility and the effectiveness of the proposed control strategy. In this paper, a photovoltaic (PV) module-level Cascaded H-Bridge (CHB) inverter with an integrated Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is proposed. The advantages and drawbacks of the CHB circuit architecture in distributed PV generation systems are highlighted. The main benefits are related to the higher granularity of the PV power control, which mitigates mismatch effects, thus increasing the power harvesting. Nevertheless, heavy unbalanced configurations due to the intermittent nature of PV sources need to be properly addressed. In order to smooth the PV fluctuations, a Battery Energy Storage System is used to provide both an energy buffer and coordination of power supply and demand to obtain a flat profile of the output power. In particular, by exploiting the inherent modularity of the conversion circuit, a distributed storage system is also implemented by splitting the battery into smaller units each of which represents the backup module of a single power cell of the PV CHB. The proposed design and control strategy allows overcoming the operating limits of PV CHB inverter. Simulation results, carried out on a single-phase nineteen-level PV CHB inverter, evidence the effectiveness of the proposed design and control approach to minimize the adverse impact of deep mismatch conditions, thus enabling continuous power output by compensating PV power fluctuations. The present paper deals with the promising energy harvesting applications of a composite piezoelectric metal support that is properly designed for the rotor of a mechanical system. The aim is to determine whether the vibrational power coming from the static residual imbalance, which is generally considered to be an undesired and useless side-effect of the rotation, can be converted into electric power and then stored to be used in other applications. The analysis, starting from the Jeffcott rotor model and the piezoelectric constitutive equations, has been carried out by developing an approximated linear model of a piezoelectric support, in order to theoretically evaluate the performance and the feasibility of the proposed system. The accuracy of the exploited analytical model has been validated for both static and dynamic operations by 3D Ansys® Mechanical APDL. Finally, a MatLab®/Simulink® model has been built to simulate the electric behavior of the piezoelectric material, and to estimate the power that it is possible to extract via an alternative/direct current converter (AC/DC converter).
