Subsurface structural distribution can be detected using Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR). The distribution can be considered as road fingerprints for vehicle positioning. Similar to the principle of visual image matching for localization, the position coordinates of the vehicle can be calculated by matching real-time GPR images with pre-constructed reference GPR images. However, GPR images, due to their low resolution, cannot extract well-defined geometric features such as corners and lines. Thus, traditional visual image processing algorithms perform inadequately when applied to GPR image matching. To address this issue, this paper innovatively proposes a GPR image matching and localization method based on a novel feature descriptor, termed as central dense structure context (CDSC) features. The algorithm utilizes the strip-like elements in GPR images to improve the accuracy of GPR image matching. First, a CDSC feature descriptor is designed. By applying threshold segmentation and extremum point extraction to the GPR image, stratified strip-like elements and pseudo-corner points are obtained. The pseudo-corner points are treated as the centers, and the surrounding strip-like elements are described in context to form the GPR feature descriptors. Then, based on the feature description method, feature descriptors for both the real-time image and the reference image are calculated separately. By searching for the nearest matching point pairs and removing erroneous pairs, GPR image matching and localization are achieved. The proposed algorithm was evaluated on datasets collected from urban roads and railway tracks, achieving localization errors of 0.06 m (RMSE) and 1.22 m (RMSE), respectively. Compared to the traditional Speeded Up Robust Features (SURF) visual image matching algorithm, localization errors were reduced by 86.6% and 95.7% in urban road and railway track scenarios, respectively. Detecting sub-surface objects poses significant challenges, partly due to attenuation of the ground medium and cluttered environments. The acquisition polarisation and antenna orientation can also yield significant variation of detection performance. These challenges can be mitigated by developing more versatile systems and algorithms to enhance detection and identification. In this study, a novel application of a 3D SAR inverse algorithm and polarisation synthesis was applied to ultra-wideband polarimetric data of buried objects. The principle of polarisation synthesis facilitates an adaptable technique which can be used to match the target's polarisation characteristics, and the application of this revealed hidden structures, enhanced detection, and increased received power when compared to single polarisation results. This study emphasises the significance of polarimetry in ground-penetrating radar (GPR), particularly for target discrimination in high-lift-off applications. Full-waveform inversion (FWI) is one of the most promising techniques in current ground-penetrating radar (GPR) inversion methods. The least-squares method is usually used, minimizing the mismatch between the observed signal and the simulated signal. However, the cycle-skipping problem has become an urgent focus of this method because of the nonlinearity of the inversion problem. To mitigate the issue of local minima, the optimal transport problem has been introduced into full-waveform inversion in this study. The Wasserstein distance derived from the optimal transport problem is defined as the mismatch function in the FWI objective function, replacing the L 2 norm. In this study, the Wasserstein distance is computed by using entropy regularization and the Sinkhorn algorithm to reduce computational complexity and improve efficiency. Additionally, this study presents the objective function for dual-parameter full-waveform inversion of ground-penetrating radar, with the Wasserstein distance as the mismatch function. By normalizing with the Softplus function, the electromagnetic wave signals are adjusted to meet the non-negativity and mass conservation assumptions of the Wasserstein distance, and the convexity of the method has been proven. A multi-scale frequency-domain Wasserstein distance full-waveform inversion method based on the Softplus normalization approach is proposed, enabling the simultaneous inversion of relative permittivity and conductivity from ground-penetrating radar data. Numerical simulation cases demonstrate that this method has low initial model dependency and low noise sensitivity, allowing for high-precision inversion of relative permittivity and conductivity. The increasing variety and frequency of subgrade defects in operational highways have led to a rise in road safety incidents. This study employed ground-penetrating radar (GPR) detection and forward simulation to analyze the characteristic patterns of common subgrade defects, such as looseness, voids, and cavities. Through the integration of instantaneous feature information from different defect patterns with complex signal techniques, the boundary judgment of structural layers and anomalies in GPR images of various subgrade defects was improved. An intelligent recognition platform was established, and a radar image dataset was created and trained to evaluate the recognition performance of the You Only Look Once (YOLO) v3 and Single-Shot Multi-Box Detector (SSD) algorithms. Evaluation metrics such as precision, recall, F1-score, average precision (AP), and mean average precision (mAP) were used to assess the detection efficiency and accuracy for subgrade defect images. The results showed that YOLO v3 achieved an average detection accuracy of 76.69%, while the SSD achieved 75.07%. This study demonstrates that the reliability of the intelligent recognition and classification of highway subgrade defects can be enhanced by using GPR for non-destructive testing. This study presents a procedure in which 3D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) were used to determine singularities in the foundations of protected historic towers, where space is limited due to their characteristics and location in highly populated areas. This study was carried out on the Tower of the Cathedral "Santa Iglesia Catedral de Santa María" in Murcia, Spain. The novel distribution of a continuous nonlinear profile along the outer and inner perimeters of the Tower allowed us to obtain a 3D ERT model of the subsoil, even under its load-bearing walls. This nonlinear configuration of the electrodes allowed us to reach adequate investigation depths in buildings with limited interior and exterior space for data collection without disturbing the historic structure. The ERT results were compared with GPR measurements and with information from archaeological excavations conducted in 1999 and 2009. The geometry and distribution of the cavities in the entire foundation slab of the Tower were determined, verifying the proposed procedure. This methodology allows the acquisition of a detailed understanding of the singularities of the foundations of protected historic towers in urban areas with limited space, reducing time and costs and avoiding the use of destructive techniques, with the aim of implementing a more efficient and effective strategy for the protection of other tower foundations. Radar polarimetry is a technique that can be used to enhance target detection, identification and classification; however, the quality of these measurements can be significantly influenced by the characteristics of the radar antenna. For an accurate and reliable system, the calibration of the antenna is vitally important to mitigate these effects. This study presents a methodology to calibrate Ultra-Wideband (UWB) dual-polarised antennas in the near-field using a thin elongated metallic cylinder as the calibration object. The calibration process involves measuring the scattering matrix of the metallic cylinder as it is rotated, in this case producing 100 distinct scattering matrices from which the calibration parameters are derived, facilitating a robust and stable solution. The calibration procedure was tested and validated using a Vector Network Analyser (VNA) and two quad-ridged antennas, which presented different performance levels. The calibration methodology demonstrated notable improvements, aligning the performance of both functioning and under-performing antennas to equivalent specifications. Mid-band validation measurements indicated minimal co-polar channel imbalance (<0.3 dB), low phase error (<0.8°) and improved cross-polar isolation (≈48 dB). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Hyperbolae in radargrams are caused by a variety of small subsurface objects. The analysis of their curvature enables the determination of propagation velocity in the subsurface, which is important for exact time-to-depth conversion and migration and also yields information on the water content of the soil. Using deep learning methods and fitting (DLF) algorithms, it is possible to automatically detect and analyze large numbers of hyperbola in 3D Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR) datasets. As a result, a 3D velocity model can be established. Combining the hyperbola locations and the 3D velocity model with reflection depth sections and timeslices leads to improved archaeological interpretation due to (1) correct time-to-depth conversion through migration with the 3D velocity model, (2) creation of depthslices following the topography, (3) evaluation of the spatial distribution of hyperbolae, and (4) derivation of a 3D water content model of the site. In an exemplary study, we applied DLF to a 3D GPR dataset from the multi-phased (2nd to 12th century CE) archaeological site of Goting on the island of Föhr, Northern Germany. Using RetinaNet, we detected 38,490 hyperbolae in an area of 1.76 ha and created a 3D velocity model. The velocities ranged from approximately 0.12 m/ns at the surface to 0.07 m/ns at approx. 3 m depth in the vertical direction; in the lateral direction, the maximum velocity variation was ±0.048 m/ns. The 2D-migrated radargrams and subsequently created depthslices revealed the remains of a longhouse, which was not known beforehand and had not been visible in the unmigrated timeslices. We found hyperbola apex points aligned along linear strong reflections. They can be interpreted as stones contained in ditch fills. The hyperbola points help to differentiate between ditches and processing artifacts that have a similar appearance as the ditches in time-/depthslices. From the derived 3D water content model, we could identify the thickness of the archaeologically relevant layer across the whole site. The layer contains a lot of humus and has a high water retention capability, leading to a higher water content compared to the underlying glacial moraine sand, which is well-drained. Crosshole ground penetrating radar (GPR) is an efficient method for ensuring the quality of retaining structures without the need for excavation. However, interpreting crosshole GPR data is time-consuming and prone to inaccuracies. To address this challenge, we proposed a novel three-dimensional (3D) reconstruction method based on a generative adversarial network (GAN) to recover 3D permittivity distributions from crosshole GPR images. The established framework, named CGPR2VOX, integrates a fully connected layer, a residual network, and a specialized 3D decoder in the generator to effectively translate crosshole GPR data into 3D permittivity voxels. The discriminator was designed to enhance the generator's performance by ensuring the physical plausibility and accuracy of the reconstructed models. This adversarial training mechanism enables the network to learn non-linear relationships between crosshole GPR data and subsurface permittivity distributions. CGPR2VOX was trained using a dataset generated through finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) simulations, achieving precision, recall and F1-score of 91.43%, 96.97% and 94.12%, respectively. Model experiments validate that the relative errors of the estimated positions of the defects were 1.67%, 1.65%, and 1.30% in the X-, Y-, and Z-direction, respectively. Meanwhile, the method exhibits noteworthy generalization capabilities under complex conditions, including condition variations, heterogeneous materials and electromagnetic noise, highlighting its reliability and effectiveness for practical quality assurance of retaining structures. The underground detection environment in coal mines is complex, with numerous interference sources. Traditional ground-penetrating radar (GPR) methods suffer from limited detection range, high noise levels, and weak deep signals, making it extremely difficult to accurately identify geological structures without stable feature feedback. During research, it was found that the detection energy of the same target significantly changes with the antenna direction. Based on this phenomenon, this paper proposes a geological radar advanced detection method using spatial scanning. This method overcomes constraints imposed by the underground coal mine environment on detection equipment, enhancing both detection range and accuracy compared to traditional approaches. Experiments using this method revealed pea-shaped response characteristics of planar geological structures in radar images, and the mechanisms behind their formation were analyzed. Additionally, this paper studied the changes in response characteristics under changes in target inclination, providing a basis for understanding the spatial distribution of geological structures. Finally, application experiments in underground coal mine environments explored the practical potential of this method. Results indicate that, compared to drilling data, this method achieves identification accuracies of 91.88%, 90.42%, and 78.72% for the depth and spatial extent of geological structures, providing effective technical support for coal mining operations. This paper investigates the use of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) technology for detecting shallow buried objects, utilizing an air-coupled stepped frequency continuous wave (SFCW) radar system that operates within a 2 GHz bandwidth starting at 500 MHz. Different GPR data acquisition methods for air-coupled systems are compared, specifically down-looking, side-looking, and circular acquisition strategies, employing the back projection algorithm to provide focusing of the acquired GPR data. Experimental results showed that the GPR can penetrate up to 0.6 m below the surface in a down-looking mode. The developed radar and the back projection focusing algorithm were used to acquire data in the side-looking and circular mode, providing focused images with a resolution of 0.1 m and detecting subsurface objects up to 0.3 m below the surface. The proposed approach transforms B-scans of the GPR-based data into 2D images. Many machine learning (ML)-based detection methods for interpreting ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data of concrete tunnels require extensive labeled damage-state data for model training, limiting their practical use in concealed damage detection of in-service tunnels. This study presents a probabilistic, data-driven method for GPR-based damage detection, which exempts the requirement in the training process of supervised ML models. The approach involves extracting a radar feature vector (RFV), building a Bayesian baseline model with healthy data, and quantifying damage severity with the Bayes factor. The RFV is a complex vector obtained by radargram data fusion. Bayesian regression is applied to build a model for the relationship between real and imaginary parts of the RFV. The Bayes factor is employed for defect identification and severity assessment, by quantifying the difference between the RFV built with new observations and the baseline RFV predicted by the baseline model with new input. The probability of damage is calculated to reflect the influence of uncertainties on the detection result. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated through simulated data with random noise and physical model tests. Sorghatmesh mosque is a historical structure that was constructed in Cairo, Egypt, by Prince Saif El-Din Sorghatmesh in 1356. A dual-frequency ground-penetrating radar (GPR) with 250–700 MHz was used to investigate the subsurface of the Sorghatmesh mosque for restoration purposes. A total of 37 lines were surveyed on the ground floor of the mosque. The subsurface utilities were detected, and the status of the concrete base and the medium of the ground floor were assessed. A set of subsurface anomalies were detected and interpreted within the ground floor area of the mosque. In order to validate the interpretation, a trial pit was drilled on the ground floor, allowing for the visual inspection of the subsurface, and a Georadar numerical simulation was carried out to study the responses of the subsurface materials and conditions. For a better comprehension of the results, the ground floor area was categorized into five zones where the GPR interpretations between survey lines are almost similar. This work not only demonstrates the effectiveness of GPR as a non-invasive investigation tool but also highlights the potential of integrating advanced technologies into cultural heritage preservation by offering refined methodologies and insights for future research and restoration efforts. This study addresses the features of the internal structure of the geological layers adjacent to the Polychrome Hall ceiling of the Cave of Altamira (Spain) and their link to the distribution of moisture and geological discontinuities mainly as fractures, joints, bedding planes and detachments, using 3D Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) mapping. In this research, 3D GPR data were collected with 300 MHz, 800 MHz and 1.6 GHz center frequency antennas. The data recorded with these three frequency antennas were combined to further our understanding of the layout of geological discontinuities and how they link to the moisture or water inputs that infiltrate and reach the ceiling surface where the rock art of the Polychrome Hall is located. The same 1 × 1 m2 area was adopted for 3D data acquisition with the three antennas, obtaining 3D isosurface (isoattribute-surface) images of internal distribution of moisture and structural features of the Polychrome Hall ceiling. The results derived from this study reveal significant insights into the overlying karst strata of Polychrome Hall, particularly the interface between the Polychrome Layer and the underlying Dolomitic Layer. The results show moisture patterns associated with geological features such as fractures, joints, detachments of strata and microcatchments, elucidating the mechanisms driving capillary rise and water infiltration coming from higher altitudes. The study primarily identifies areas of increased moisture content, correlating with earlier observations and enhancing our understanding of water infiltration patterns. This underscores the utility of 3D GPR as an essential tool for informing and putting conservation measures into practice. By delineating subsurface structures and moisture dynamics, this research contributes to a deeper analysis of the deterioration processes directly associated with the infiltration water both in this ceiling and in the rest of the Cave of Altamira, providing information to determine its future geological and hydrogeological evolution. We present a technique for the detection of vertebrate skeletons buried at shallow depths through the use of a ground-penetrating radar (GPR). The technique is based on the acquisition of high-resolution data by medium-to-high frequency GPR antennas and the analysis of the radar profiles by a new forward modelling method that is applied on a set of representative traces. This approach allows us to obtain synthetic traces that can be used to build detailed reflectivity diagrams that plot spikes with a distinct amplitude and polarity for each reflector in the ground. The method was tested in a controlled experiment performed at the top of Cerro Los Quesos, one of the most fossiliferous localities in the Ica Desert of Peru. We acquired GPR data at the location of a partially buried fossil skeleton of a large whale and analyzed the reflections associated with the bones using the new technique, determining the possible signature of vertebrae, ribs, the cranium (including the rostrum), and mandibles. Our results show that the technique is effective in the mapping of buried structures, particularly in the detection of tiny features, even below the classical (Ricker and Rayleigh) estimates of the vertical resolution of the antenna in civil engineering and forensic applications. Time-lapse ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys, combined with automated infiltration experiments, provide a non-invasive approach for investigating the distribution of infiltrated water within the soil medium and creating three-dimensional images of the wetting bulb. This study developed and validated an experimental protocol aimed at quantifying and visualizing water distribution fluxes in layered soils under both unsaturated and saturated conditions. The 3D images of the wetting bulb significantly enhanced the interpretation of infiltration data, enabling a detailed analysis of water movement through the layered system. We used the infiltrometer data and the Beerkan Estimation of Soil Transfer parameters (BEST) method to determine soil capacitive indicators and evaluate the physical quality of the upper soil layer. The field survey involved conducting time-lapse GPR surveys alongside infiltration experiments between GPR repetitions. These experiments included both tension and ponding tests, designed to sequentially activate the soil matrix and the full pore network. The results showed that the soil under study exhibited significant soil aeration and macroporosity (represented by AC and pMAC), while indicators related to microporosity (such as PAWC and RFC) were notably low. The RFC value of 0.55 m3 m−3 indicated the soil's limited capacity to retain water relative to its total pore volume. The PAWC value of 0.10 m3 m−3 indicated a scarcity of micropores ranging from 0.2 to 30 μm in diameter, which typically hold water accessible to plant roots within the total porosity. The saturated soil hydraulic conductivity, Ks, values ranged from 192.2 to 1031.0 mm h−1, with a mean of 424.4 mm h−1, which was 7.9 times higher than the corresponding unsaturated hydraulic conductivity measured at a pressure head of h = −30 mm (K−30). The results indicated that the upper soil layer supports root proliferation and effectively drains excess water to the underlying limestone layer. However, this layer has limited capacity to store and supply water to plant roots and acts as a restrictive barrier, promoting non-uniform downward water movement, as revealed by the 3D GPR images. The observed difference in hydraulic conductivity between the two layers suggests that surface ponding and overland flow are generated through a saturation excess mechanism. Water percolating through the soil can accumulate above the limestone layer, creating a shallow perched water table. The main purpose of this study is the subsurface investigation of two complex geological environments focusing on the improvement of data acquisition and processing parameters regarding electric and seismic tomographic techniques. Two different study areas, in central–east Peloponnese and SE Attica, were selected, where detailed geological mapping and surface geophysical survey were carried out. The applied geophysical survey included the application of electrical resistivity tomography (ERT), seismic refraction tomography (SRT) and ground penetrating radar (GPR). The geoelectrical measurements were acquired with different arrays and electrode configurations. Moreover, various types of seismic sources were used at seventeen shot locations along the seismic arrays. For the processing of geoelectrical data, clustered datasets were created, increasing the depth of investigation and discriminatory capability. The seismic data processing included the following: (a) the creation of synthetic models and seismic records to determine the effectiveness and capabilities of the technique, (b) spectral analysis of the seismic records to determine the optimal seismic source type and (c) inversion of the field data to create representative subsurface velocity models. The results of the two techniques successfully delineated the complex subsurface structure that characterizes these two geological environments. The Greek marble statue of the Auriga of Mozia Island, in Sicily, is the most important artwork displayed at the Whitaker Foundation Archaeological Museum. It underwent geophysical investigations twice, in 2012 and 2021, to assess the marble's degradation. The 2012 investigation prepared the statue for transfer to the Paul Getty Museum in New York and repositioning on an anti-seismic pedestal. The 2021 investigation evaluated potential new damage before another transfer. Both investigations utilized 3D ultrasonic tomography (UST) to detect degraded marble areas and ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to identify internal discontinuities, such as fractures or lesions, and locate metal pins that were previously inserted to reassemble the statue and its pedestal. Results from the UST indicate an average marble velocity of approximately 4700 m/s, suggesting good mechanical strength, with some areas showing lower velocities (~3000 m/s) within the material's variability range. The GPR profiles demonstrated internal signal homogeneity, excluding internal fracture surfaces or lesions, and confirmed the presence of metallic pins. This study highlights the effectiveness of integrating UST and GPR for non-invasive diagnostics of marble sculptures, providing detailed insights into the marble's condition and identifying hidden defects or damage. In this paper, the advantages of the joint use of MHz- and GHz-frequency band impulses when employing contactless ground penetration radar (GPR) for the remote sensing of biomass, the height of the wheat canopy, and underlying soil moisture were experimentally investigated. A MHz-frequency band nanosecond impulse with a duration of 1.2 ns (average frequency of 750 MHz and spectrum bandwidth of 580 MHz, at a level of –6 dB) was emitted and received by a GPR OKO-3 equipped with an AB-900 M3 antenna unit. A GHz-frequency band sub-nanosecond impulse with a duration of 0.5 ns (average frequency of 3.2 GHz and spectral bandwidth of 1.36 GHz, at a level of −6 dB) was generated using a horn antenna and a Keysight FieldFox N9917B 18 GHz vector network analyzer. It has been shown that changes in the relative amplitudes and time delays of nanosecond impulses, reflected from a soil surface covered with wheat at a height from 0 to 87 cm and fresh above-ground biomass (AGB) from 0 to 1.5 kg/m2, do not exceed 6% and 0.09 ns, respectively. GPR nanosecond impulses reflected/scattered by the wheat canopy have not been detected. In this research, sub-nanosecond impulses reflected/scattered by the wheat canopy have been confidently identified and make it possible to measure the wheat height (fresh AGB up to 2.3 kg/m2 and height up to 104 cm) with a determination coefficient (R2) of ~0.99 and a bias of ~−7 cm, as well as fresh AGB where R2 = 0.97, with a bias = −0.09 kg/m2, and a root-mean-square error of 0.1 kg/m2. The joint use of impulses in two different MHz- and GHz-frequency bands will, in the future, make it possible to create UAV-based reflectometers for simultaneously mapping the soil moisture, height, and biomass of vegetation for precision farming systems. Rammed earth construction, an ancient and sustainable building technique, faces significant preservation challenges, particularly in historical contexts. This study aims to enhance the preventive preservation of rammed earth historical heritage through a comprehensive methodology combining continuous monitoring, architectural inspections, and data fusion. By integrating nondestructive testing techniques such as ultrasound, thermography, and ground-penetrating radar with operational modal analysis and modeling, the proposed approach allows for early detection and assessment of structural vulnerabilities. This methodology was applied to the Tower of Muhammad in the Alhambra of Granada, Spain, demonstrating its effectiveness in identifying and quantifying damage and predicting structural health. Using multi-source data (documentation, inspections, nondestructive tests, and continuous monitoring), a finite element model was built, calibrated (achieving an avg. error in modal frequencies of 1.28% and a minimum modal assurance criterion value of 0.94), and used to develop a surrogate model able to predict the modal properties of the tower in 0.02 s , becoming compatible with continuous system identification. The presented results highlight the importance of continuous data acquisition and advanced diagnostic tools for safeguarding rammed earth structures against environmental and anthropogenic threats. Accurately measuring the moisture content (MC) of square timber is crucial for ensuring the quality and performance of wood products in wood processing. Traditional MC detection methods have certain limitations. Therefore, this study developed a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (1D-CNN) model based on the first 8 nanoseconds of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) signals to predict the MC of square timber. The study found that the mixed-species model exhibited effective predictive performance (R2 = 0.9864, RMSE = 0.0393) across the tree species red spruce, Dahurian larch, European white birch, and Manchurian ash (MC range 0%–133.1%), while single-species models showed even higher accuracy (R2 ≥ 0.9876, RMSE ≤ 0.0358). Additionally, the 1D-CNN model outperformed other algorithms in automatically capturing complex patterns in GPR full-waveform amplitude data. Moreover, the algorithms based on full-waveform amplitude data demonstrated significant advantages in detecting wood MC compared to those based on a traditional time–frequency feature parameter. Locating clandestine graves presents significant challenges to law enforcement agencies, necessitating the testing of grave detection techniques. This experimental study, conducted under Australian field conditions, assesses the effectiveness of time-lapse ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) in detecting pig burials as simulated forensic cases. The research addresses two key questions: (1) observability of graves using GPR and ERT, and (2) changes in geophysical responses with reference to changing climatic conditions. The principal novelty of this research is its Australian focus—this is the first time-lapse GPR and ERT study used to locate clandestine graves in Australia. The results reveal that both GPR and ERT can detect graves; however, ERT demonstrates greater suitability in homogeneous soil and anomalously wet climate conditions, with the detectability affected by grave depth. This project also found that resistivity values are likely influenced by soil moisture and decomposition fluids; however, these parameters were not directly measured in this study. Contrastingly, although GPR successfully achieved 2 m penetration in each survey, the site's undeveloped soil likely resulted in inconsistent detectability. The findings underscore the significance of site-specific factors when employing GPR and/or ERT for grave detection, including soil homogeneity, climate conditions, water percolation, and body decomposition state. These findings offer practical insights into each technique's utility as a search tool for missing persons, aiding law enforcement agencies with homicide cases involving covert graves. Lunar exploration is of significant importance in the development and utilization of in situ lunar resources, water ice exploration, and astronomical science. In recent years, ground-based radar (GBR) has gained increasing attention in the field of lunar exploration due to its flexibility, low cost, and penetrating capabilities. This paper reviews the scientific research on lunar exploration using GBR, outlining the basic principles of GBR and the progress made in lunar exploration studies. Our paper introduces the fundamental principles of lunar imaging using GBR and systematically reviews studies on lunar surface/subsurface detection, the dielectric properties inversion of the lunar regolith, and polar water ice detection using GBR. In particular, the paper summarizes the current development status of the Chinese GBR and forecasts future development trends in China. This review will enhance the understanding of lunar exploration results using GBR radar, systematically demonstrate the main applications and scientific achievements of GBR in lunar exploration, and provide a reference for GBR radar in future lunar exploration missions. In the process of using multi-channel ground-penetrating radar (GPR) for underground cavity exploration, the acquired 3D data include reflection data from underground cavities or various underground objects (structures). Reflection data from unspecified structures can interfere with the identification process of underground cavities. This study aims to identify underground cavities using a C-GAN model with an applied ResBlock technique. This deep learning model demonstrates excellent performance in the image domain and can automatically classify the presence of cavities by analyzing 3D GPR data, including reflection waveforms (A-scan), cross-sectional views (B-scan), and plan views (C-scan) measured from the ground under roads. To maximize the performance of the C-GAN model, a background filtering algorithm (BFA) was developed and applied to enhance the visibility and clarity of underground cavities. To verify the performance of the developed BFA, 3D data collected from roads in Seoul, Republic of Korea, using 3D GPR equipment were transformed, and the C-GAN model was applied. As a result, it was confirmed that the recall, an indicator of cavity prediction, improved by approximately 1.15 times compared to when the BFA was not applied. This signifies the verification of the effectiveness of the BFA. This study developed a special algorithm to distinguish underground cavities. This means that in the future, not only the advancement of separate equipment and systems but also the development of specific algorithms can contribute to the cavity exploration process. Deep learning techniques have flourished in recent years and have shown great potential in ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data interpretation. However, obtaining sufficient training data is a great challenge. This paper proposes an intelligent recognition method based on slicing-aided hyper inference (SAHI) for GPR images. Firstly, for the problem of insufficient samples of GPR images with structural loose distresses, data augmentation is carried out based on deep convolutional generative adversarial networks (DCGAN). Since distress features occupy fewer pixels on the original image, to allow the model to pay greater attention to the distress features, it is necessary to crop the original images centered on the distress labeling boxes first, and then input the cropped images into the model for training. Then, the YOLOv5 model is used for distress detection and the SAHI framework is used in the training and inference stages. The experimental results show that the detection accuracy is improved by 5.3% after adding the DCGAN-generated images, which verifies the effectiveness of the DCGAN-generated images. The detection accuracy is improved by 10.8% after using the SAHI framework in the training and inference stages, which indicates that SAHI is a key part of improving detection performance, as it significantly improves the ability to recognize distress. In this paper, some of the basic information on Ground-Penetrating Radar (GPR), its applications (especially in the field of civil engineering) and limitations are presented. As a non-destructive technique, GPR is a powerful tool for the investigation of structures and structural members, roads, geological layers, archaeological sites and many more. The technology is based on electromagnetic radiation in the UHF/VHF range (10 MHz to 3 GHz). The choice of the frequency depends on the intended use, depth and size of the target and medium where the target is located. Joined with other testing methods (ultrasound method, dynamic methods with forced or ambient vibrations, electrical conductivity testing, etc.), GPR can provide a deep insight into the investigated object. However, like many other non-destructive methods, the choice of input parameters may affect the results. In this regard, a case study presented in this paper demonstrates not only different applications of GPR in civil engineering but also the determination (calibration) of one of those input parameters: the dielectric constant of glued laminated timber. The challenge here was not only to investigate the influence of the direction of measurements with regards to the direction of the fibers but also to acknowledge the contribution of the test antenna used during testing and dielectric constant calibration. Continuous measurements of soil moisture in the deeper parts of the unsaturated zone remain an important challenge. This study examines the development of an integrated system for the continuous and 3-D monitoring of the vadose zone processes in a cost- and energy-efficient way. This system comprises TDR, ERT and GPR geophysical techniques. Their capacities to adequately image subsurface moisture changes with continuous and time-lapse measurements are assessed during an artificial infiltration experiment conducted in a characteristic urban site with anthropogenic fills and much compaction. A 3-D array was designed for each method to expand the information of a single TDR probe and obtain a broader image of the subsurface. Custom spatial TDR probes installed in boreholes made with a percussion drilling instrument were used for soil moisture measurements. Moisture profiles along the probes were estimated with a numerical one-dimensional inversion model and a standard calibration equation. High conductivity water used during all infiltration tests led to the detection of the flow by all techniques. Preferential flow was present throughout the experiment and imaged sufficiently by all methods. Overall, the integrated approach conceals each method's weaknesses and provides a reliable 3-D view of the subsurface. The availability of multichannel ground-penetrating radar systems capable of gathering multiview, multistatic, multifrequency data provides novel chances to improve subsurface imaging results. However, customized data processing techniques and smart choices of the measurement setup are needed to find a trade-off between image quality and acquisition time. In this paper, we adopt a Born Approximation-based full 3D approach, which can manage multiview-multistatic, multifrequency data and faces the imaging as a linear inverse scattering problem. The inverse problem is solved by exploiting the truncated singular value decomposition as a regularization scheme. The paper presents a theoretical study aimed at assessing how the reconstruction capabilities of the imaging approach depend on the adopted measurement configuration. In detail, the performance achievable in the standard case of multimonostatic, multifrequency data is compared with that provided by a multiview-multistatic, multifrequency configuration, where the data are gathered by considering a progressively increasing number of transmitting antennas. The comparison of the achievable imaging performance is carried out by exploiting the spectral content and the point spread function, which are general tools to foresee the achievable reconstruction capabilities. A detection and evaluation system containing a two-level index of structural integrity and bearing capacity was constructed based on ground-penetrating radar (GPR) and a falling weight deflector (FWD). This system was constructed to solve problems with the detection, evaluation, and structural and material design of asphalt rehabilitation for the prevention and control of asphalt reflection cracks in asphalt overlaying composite Portland cement pavement. Based on the detected data from the GPR and FWD, the reasonable and recommended thickness range of the stress-absorbing layer was determined by the finite element method, and the optimization design of an anti-reflective crack structure is proposed. Furthermore, a material design and engineering application of the stress-absorbing layer was carried out. The results show that an additional 10 cm layer of repaved asphalt can reduce temperature stress by 64.1%, reduce fatigue stress by 29.3% at the cement slab bottom, and extend the service life by 23.1 years. The reasonable thickness of the stress-absorbing layer ranges from 1.6 cm to 2.0 cm, and the recommended structural combination design is a 4 cm SMA-13 upper layer, a 4 cm AC-16 lower layer, and a 2 cm stress-absorbing layer overlaying existing asphalt overlay. The impact toughness of the designed stress-absorbing layer is 1.05 times and 1.44 times that of the other stress-absorbing layer and the AC-16 asphalt mixture, respectively, which have been successfully used for more than 5 years. The recommended design rehabilitation has good engineering application. The uniformity of the stress-absorbing layer can reach 63%, and an anti-reflective crack effect is expected. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is widely employed as a non-destructive tool for subsurface detection of transport infrastructures. Typically, data collected by high-frequency antennas offer high resolution but limited penetration depth, whereas data from low-frequency antennas provide deeper penetration but lower resolution. To simultaneously achieve high resolution and deep penetration via a composite radargram, a Non-Subsampled Contourlet Transform (NSCT) algorithm-based multifrequency GPR data-fusion method is proposed by integrating NSCT with appropriate fusion rules, respectively, for high-frequency and low-frequency coefficients of decomposed radargrams and by incorporating quantitative assessment metrics. Despite the advantages of NSCT in image processing, its applications to GPR data fusion for concealed damage identification of transport infrastructures are rarely reported. Numerical simulation, tunnel model test, and on-site road test are conducted for performance validation. The comparison between the evaluation metrics before and after fusion demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed fusion method. Both shallow and deep hollow targets hidden in the simulated concrete structure, real tunnel model, and road are identified through one radargram obtained by fusing different radargrams. The significance of this study is producing a high-quality composite radargram to enable multi-depth concealed damage detection and exempting human interference in the interpretation of multiple radargrams. Cracks are the most typical faults of concrete structures, and their extension can lead to structural fracture. However, when cracks develop inside a structure, the most important depth information is invisible and difficult to measure. The tracer electromagnetic method is an effective technique for detecting the depth of concrete cracks, but since concrete is a multiphase stochastic composite material, its complex internal structure often interferes with the radar detection results, making the conventional radar interpretation technique difficult. In this study, the detection results for concrete crack depth detection based on the tracer electromagnetic method were comprehensively analyzed by combining the complex signal analysis technique, using transient information such as amplitude, phase, and frequency in order to improve the precision and accuracy of radar signal interpretation. In this study, a numerical model was established to determine whether typical cracks such as vertical cracks and diagonal cracks contain indicators or not, and the ground-penetrating radar forward simulation software was used to perform forward simulation of the numerical model and analyze the forward results. The complex signal analysis technique was used to obtain the response characteristics of typical cracks when they did and did not contain the indicator, and the complex signal was finally analyzed by combining it with the actual crack depth detection data. The results show that the tracer electromagnetic method can significantly improve the crack bottom's reflection ability for radar signals, and when the crack bottom contains an indicator, the amplitude of the reflected signal at the bottom of the crack is enhanced, the phase is reversed, and the frequency is reduced. The primary objective of this case study is to evaluate the effectiveness of drone-based ground penetrating radar (GPR) in detecting and mapping underground water levels and soil-to-rock boundaries. This knowledge is crucial for accurate structural engineering analyses, including foundation engineering and site-specific response evaluations. The paper also considers drone-based GPR to overcome common urban obstacles, topographic variations, and environmental factors by simply flying over them, offering a promising solution to these challenges. The research utilized drone-based GPR equipped with an unshielded 150 MHz dipole antenna and employed filtering procedures to diminish the effect of above-ground obstacles on the interpretation of our results. The study unequivocally demonstrated the feasibility and effectiveness of drone-based GPR in these applications, reassuring the civil engineering community. The findings of this study significantly advance our understanding of drone-based GPR technology for mapping disturbed soil boundaries and water table levels in foundation engineering and site response applications and provide valuable recommendations for optimizing its performance in complicated terrains, thereby inspiring and guiding future research and practice in this field. To optimally preserve and manage our civil structures, we need to have accurate information about their (1) geometry and dimensions, (2) boundary conditions, (3) material properties, and (4) structural conditions. The objective of this article is to show how imaging and image fusion using non-destructive testing (NDT) measurements can support structural engineers in performing accurate structural evaluations. The proposed methodology involves imaging using synthetic aperture focusing technique (SAFT)-based image reconstruction from ground penetrating radar (GPR) as well as ultrasonic echo array (UEA) measurements taken on multiple surfaces of a structural member. The created images can be combined using image fusion to produce a digital cross-section of the member. The feasibility of this approach is demonstrated using a case study of a prestressed concrete bridge that required a bridge load rating (BLR) but where no as-built plans were available. Imaging and image fusion enabled the creation of a detailed cross-section, allowing for confirmation of the number and location of prestressing strands and the location and size of internal voids. This information allowed the structural engineer of record (SER) to perform a traditional bridge load rating (BLR), ultimately avoiding load restrictions being imposed on the bridge. The proposed methodology not only provides useful information for structural evaluations, but also represents a basis upon which the digitalization of our infrastructure can be achieved. Coarse roots and the root plate play an important role in tree resistance to uprooting. In this study, a qualitative mechanistic model was developed to analyze coniferous tree resistance to uprooting in relation to tree morphological characteristics. The sizes of the crown, stem, and root plate of twenty sample spruces and twenty sample Korean pines were individually measured for this purpose. Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), the coarse root distribution and root plate size were detected. In the qualitative mechanistic model, a larger crown area increased the overturning moment, while higher DBH and root plate mass increased the resistance moment. The resistance coefficient (Rm) was calculated by comparing resistive and overturning moments, classifying samples into three uprooting hazard levels. Trees with smaller crown areas, larger stems, and root plates tend to have higher resistance to uprooting, as indicated by higher Rm values. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) has been widely used for subsurface detection and testing. Numerical simulations of GPR signal are commonly performed to aid the interpretation of subsurface structures and targets in complex environments. To enhance the accuracy of GPR simulations on heterogeneous medium, this paper proposes a hybrid modeling method that combines the discrete element method with a component fusion strategy (DEM–CFS). Taking the asphalt pavement as an example, three 3D stochastic models with distinctly different porosities are constructed by the DEM–CFS method. Firstly, the DEM is utilized to establish the spatial distribution of random coarse aggregates. Then, the component fusion strategy is employed to integrate other components into the coarse aggregate skeleton. Finally, the GPR response of the constructed asphalt models is simulated using the finite-difference time-domain method. The proposed modeling method is validated through both numerical and laboratory experiments and demonstrates high precision. The results indicate that the proposed modeling method has high accuracy in predicting the dielectric constant of heterogeneous media, as generated models are closely aligned with real-world conditions. Soil plays significant roles in different phases and in the continuous existence of human life. Its comprehensive knowledge, particularly as related to its physical characteristics, enhances its utilization, conservation, and management. The traditional methods of soil study are characterized with some pitfalls such as much time needed to perform such assessments. There are also issues of invasiveness that affect the soil structures and discrete sampling that may not reflect true spatial attributes in the outcome of such techniques. These problems are largely due to the concealing nature of soil layers that made its thorough evaluation difficult. In this study, an alternative geophysical approach has been adopted. The technique is the ground-penetrating method (GPR) that utilizes electromagnetic pulse energy via its equipment's sensors, which can allow the investigation of soil properties, even in its concealing state. This study aimed at qualitatively evaluating the soil horizons and the matric potentials using the GPR signal attributes within the unsaturated zone with a view of having insight into the test field's characterization. Field data measurements were obtained using MALA ProEX GPR equipment with its accessories manufactured by MALA Geosciences, Stockholm, Sweden. Evaluation of the processed field data results and computed attributes show soil characteristics variations with depth that was interpreted as the layers. This can be seen from the GPR data presentation as an image representing the subsurface of the zones of propagation of the pulse energy. Spectral analysis of the GPR signals allows for the delineation of two zones of contrasting features, which were tagged as high and low matric potentials. Although the conventional direct measurement of the matric potential was not made at the time of the study to complement and confirm the veracity of the approach, the results indicate the possibility of the approach towards a quick and in situ technique of soil investigations. This study focuses on the application of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) in conducting field surveys and data processing at the northern campus of Jilin Jianzhu University. The research site's geographical location and overall conditions are described. A detailed layout of the survey lines for 3D surveys is presented. The collected data undergo basic processing and interpretation, identifying multiple target bodies and their associated electromagnetic responses. Advanced analyses such as 3D imaging, common attribute analysis, and time-varying centroid frequency attribute analysis are employed to investigate underground features and potential pipe networks. The case study in this research demonstrates that the integration of 3D GPR surveys and time-varying centroid frequency analysis can effectively assess the attenuation characteristics of subsurface media and structures, thereby enhancing the overall prospecting and data interpretation capabilities of GPR. When it comes to hydropower dam safety, continuous and comprehensive monitoring is increasingly important. Especially for aging dams, this can pose a difficult challenge that benefits from a multimethod analysis. Here, we present the use and suitability of a geophysical method, Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), for the non-invasive assessment of two distinct types of hydropower dams in Romania: Herculane (a concrete arch dam) and Gura Apelor (an embankment dam with a rockfill and clay core). Unlike traditional monitoring methods for dam safety in Romania, which might provide an incomplete overview, GPR offers a broader, non-destructive approach to evaluating some elements of dam integrity. Here, we present the results of surveys carried out with a 200 MHz antenna on the crests of both dams. The aim was to conduct a rapid assessment of the crest condition and identify the potential damage to the crest that may elude standard monitoring techniques. The surveys provide an imaging indicative of the structural integrity, although this is more challenging in the embankment dam, and additionally we provide significant information regarding the deformations in the upper layers. This complements data from routine topo-geodetical surveys, offering a potential explanation for the vertical displacements observed therein. We highlight several areas of potential deformation as well as degradation in subsurface structures such as rebars. The results underscore the value of GPR in supplementing established dam monitoring methods, highlighting its effectiveness in different contexts and dam types, as well as its potential in shaping future standards for dam safety management in Romania. To increase the detection accuracy of soil structure and moisture content in reconstituted soils under complex conditions, this study utilizes a 400 MHz ground-penetrating radar (GPR) to examine a study area consisting of loess, sandy loam, red clay, and mixed soil. The research involves analyzing the single-channel waveforms and two-dimensional images of GPR, preprocessing the data, obtaining envelope information via amplitude envelope detection, and performing a Hilbert transformation. This study employs a least squares fitting approach to the instantaneous phase envelope to ascertain the thickness of various soil layers. By utilizing the average envelope amplitude (AEA) method, a correlation between the radar's early signal amplitude envelope and the soil's shallow dielectric constant is established to invert the moisture content of the soil. The analysis integrates soil structure and moisture distribution data to investigate soil structure characteristics and moisture content performance under diverse soil properties and depths. The findings indicate that the envelope detection method effectively identifies stratification boundaries across different soil types; the AEA method is particularly efficacious in inverting the moisture content of reconstituted soils up to 3 m deep, with an average relative error ranging from 2.81% to 7.41%. Notably, moisture content variations in stratified reconstituted soils are more pronounced than those in mixed soil areas, displaying a marked stepwise increase with depth. The moisture content trends in the vertical direction of the same soil profile are generally consistent. This research offers a novel approach to studying reconstituted soils under complex conditions, confirming the viability of the envelope detection and AEA methods for intricate soil investigations and broadening the application spectrum of GPR in soil studies. The 1980 Ms 6.9 Irpinia earthquake was responsible for the activation or reactivation of numerous gravitative deformations mainly hosted by clayey lithotypes, affecting wide areas of Benevento Province and the Sele and Ofanto R. Valleys. The case of Calitri offers valuable insights into a methodological approach to studying mass movements affecting human settlements. Post-earthquake investigations in Calitri involved extensive geognostic boreholes and in situ surveys, providing substantial data for lithological characterization and landslide modeling. Additionally, over the past two decades, satellite-based techniques have supported the mapping and characterization of ground deformations in this area, improving our understanding of spatiotemporal evolution. Despite these efforts, a detailed subsurface comprehensionof the tectono-stratigraphy and geometriesof gravity-induced deformation remains incomplete. This study aims to enhance our knowledge of gravity-driven deformations affecting urban areas by using deep-penetrating GroundPenetrating Radar (GPR) surveys to identify landslide-related structures, rupture surfaces, and lithological characterization of the involved lithotypes. The integration of GPR surveys with classical morphotectonic analysis led to the delineation of the main subsurface discontinuities (stratigraphy, tectonics, and gravity-related), correlating them with available geognostic data. This approach provided non-invasive, detailed insights into subsurface features and stands out as one of the rare case studies in Italy that employed the GPR method for landslide investigations. This work proposes the development of a software module for studying historical and cultural heritage objects using remote and non-invasive research data. The module aims to integrate modern technologies such as image processing, data analysis, and visualization to provide access to heritage information for researchers, conservators, and the general public. Utilizing non-invasive data, such as geophysical surveys, enables the collection of information about heritage objects without causing damage. The module facilitates the analysis and visualization of this data as well as the creation of interactive object models, thereby promoting further research, preservation, and popularization of cultural heritage. The module consists of three blocks: defining areas for ground-based research using interferograms; constructing a comprehensive 3D model based on ground and underground research data; and refining the boundaries of historical-cultural heritage objects and establishing protective zones. The program is developed in the object-oriented programming language VisualBasic with additional modules. Traditional methods for monitoring the foundation settlement of airport runways predominantly employ equipment such as leveling instruments, total stations, layered settlement instruments, magnetic ring settlement instruments, ground-penetrating radar (GPR), and synthetic aperture radar. These methods suffer from low automation levels, are time-consuming, labor-intensive, and can significantly disrupt airport operations. An alternative electromagnetic detection technique, Controlled Source Audio-Frequency Magnetotellurics (CSAMT), offers deep-depth detection capabilities. However, CSAMT faces significant challenges, particularly in generating high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) signals in the far-field region (FfR). Traditional CSAMT utilizes grounded horizontal dipoles (GHDs), which radiate symmetric beams. Due to the low directivity of GHDs, only a small fraction of the radiated energy is effectively utilized in FfR observations. Enhancing the SNR in FfR typically requires either reducing the transceiving distance or increasing the transmitting power, both of which introduce substantial complications. This paper proposes an airborne-dangled monopole-antenna symmetric remote-sensing radiation source for airport runway monitoring, which replaces the conventional GHD. The analytical, simulation, and experimental verification results indicate that the energy required by the airborne-dangled symmetric source to generate the same electric field amplitude in the FfR is only one-third of that needed by traditional CSAMT. This results in significant energy savings and reduced emissions, underscoring the advantages of the airborne-dangled monopole-antenna symmetric source in enhancing energy efficiency for CSAMT. The theoretical analysis, simulations, and experimental results consistently verify the validity and efficacy of the proposed airborne-dangled monopole-antenna symmetric remote-sensing radiation source in CSAMT. The analysis of ground-penetrating radar (GPR) data is of vital importance for detecting various subsurface features that might manifest as hyperbolic peaks, which are indicators of a buried object or grayscale variation in the case of contrast in the soil texture. This method focuses on identifying exaggerated patterns through a series of image-processing steps. Two GPR images are initially read and preprocessed by extracting channels, flipping, and resizing. Then, specific regions of interest (ROIs) are cropped, and the Fourier transform is further applied to turn them into the frequency domain. With the help of their frequency signatures, these patterns are extracted from the images, and binary masks are constructed to obtain features of interest. These masked images were reconstructed and merged to make hyperbolic features visible. Finally, Local Binary Pattern (LBP) analysis is used to emphasize these hyperbolic peaks, thereby facilitating their recognition across the whole image. The proposed approach improves the detection of performance subsurface features in GPR data; hence, it is an important tool for geophysical surveys and other related applications. Many automatic classification methods published can identify the main hidden distress types of highways, but they cannot meet the precise needs of operation and maintenance. The classification of interlayer distresses based on ground penetrating radar (GPR) images is very important to improve maintenance efficiency and reduce cost. However, among models of different complexities, which models are suitable for the interlayer distress data needs further verification. Firstly, to cover enough of the variable range of distress samples, the interlayer distress dataset collected containing 32,038 samples was subcategorized into three types: interlayer debonding, interlayer water seepage, and interlayer loosening. Secondly, residual networks (ResNets) that render easier to build shallower or deeper networks (ResNet-4, ResNet-6, ResNet-8, ResNet-10, ResNet-14, ResNet-18, ResNet-34, and ResNet-50) and five classical network models (DenseNet-121, EfficientNet B0, SqueezeNet1_0, MobileNet V2, and VGG-19) were evaluated by training and validation loss, test accuracy, and model complexity. The experimental results show that all models have high test accuracy with little difference, but ResNet-4, ResNet-6, SqueezeNet1_0, and ResNet-8 exhibit no overfitting which means they have good generalization performance. We conducted large-depth Ground-Penetrating Radar investigations of the seismogenic Casamicciola fault system at the volcanic island of Ischia, with the aim of constraining the source characteristics of this active and capable fault system. On 21 August 2017, a shallow (hypocentral depth of 1.2 km), moderate (Md = 4.0) earthquake hit the island, causing severe damage and two fatalities. This was the first damaging earthquake recorded on the volcanic island of Ischia from the beginning of the instrumental era. Our survey was performed using the Loza low-frequency (15–25 MHz) GPR system calibrated by TDEM results. The data highlighted variations in the electromagnetic signal due to the presence of contacts, i.e., faults down to a depth larger than 100 m below the surface. These signal variations match with the position of the synthetic and antithetic active fault system bordering the Casamicciola Holocene graben. Our study highlights the importance of employing large-depth Ground-Penetrating Radar geophysical techniques for investigating active fault systems not only in their shallower parts, but also down to a few hundred meters' depth, providing a contribution to the knowledge of seismic hazard studies on the island of Ischia and elsewhere. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is often used to detect targets in a construction environment. Due to the different construction environments, the noise exhibits different characteristics on the GPR signal. When the noise is widely distributed on the GPR signal, and its spectrum and the spectrum of the active signal are aliased, it is difficult to separate and suppress the noise by traditional filtering methods. In this paper, we propose a deep learning GPR image noise suppression method based on a recursive guided and dual multi-scale self-attention mechanism neural network (RG-DMSA-NN), which uses a recursive guidance module and a dual multi-scale self-attention mechanism module to improve the feature extraction ability of the image and enhance the robustness and generalization ability in image noise suppression. Through the application of noise suppression on the synthesized test data and the GPR data actually collected by the Macao Science and Technology Museum, the advantages of this method over the traditional filtering, DnCNN and UNet noise suppression methods are demonstrated. In recent years, CO2 flooding has become an important technical measure for oil and gas field enterprises to further improve oil and gas recovery and achieve the goal of "dual carbon". It is also one of the concrete application forms of CCUS. Numerical simulation based on CO2-EOR plays an indispensable role in the study of the mechanism of CO2 flooding and buried percolation, allowing for technical indicators to be selected and EOR/EGR prediction to be improved for reservoir engineers. This paper discusses the numerical simulation techniques related to CO2 flooding and storage, including mathematical models and solving algorithms. A multiphase and multicomponent mathematical model is developed to describe the flow mechanism of hydrocarbon components–CO2–water underground and to simulate the phase diagram of the components. The two-phase P-T flash calculation with SSI (+DEM) and the Newton method is adopted to obtain the gas–liquid phase equilibrium parameters. The extreme value judgment of the TPD function is used to form the phase stability test and miscibility identification model. A tailor-made multistage preconditioner is built to solve the linear equation of the strong-coupled, multiphase, multicomponent reservoir simulation, which includes the variables of pressure, saturation, and composition. The multistage preconditioner improves the computational efficiency significantly. A numerical simulation of CO2 injection in a carbonate reservoir in the Middle East shows that it is effective for researching the recovery factor and storage quantity of CO2 flooding based on the above numerical simulation techniques. A dual-polarized compact Vivaldi antenna with high gain performance is proposed for tree radar applications. The proposed design introduces an array configuration consisting of two pairs of two Vivaldi elements to optimize the operating bandwidth and gain while providing dual-polarization capability. To enhance the gain of the proposed antenna over a certain frequency range of interest, directors and edge slots are incorporated into each Vivaldi element. To further enhance the overall antenna gain, a metal back reflector is used. The measurement results of the fabricated antenna show that the proposed antenna achieves a high gain of 5.5 to 14.8 dBi over broadband from 0.5 GHz to 3 GHz. Moreover, it achieves cross-polarization discrimination larger than 20 dB, ensuring high polarization purity. The fabricated antenna is used to detect and image the defects inside tree trunks. A common practice used by the Germans and collaborators in World War II, as part of the Holocaust, was to use existing Jewish cemeteries as places for mass burial. Research was completed at the Old Jewish Cemetery in Riga, Latvia, the Livas Jewish Cemetery in Liepaja, Latvia, and the Zaliakalnis Jewish Cemetery in Kaunas, Lithuania. The Old Jewish Cemetery in Riga was adjacent to the Riga Ghetto and was used to bury individuals murdered in the ghetto. In Kaunas, an area of the Zaliakalnis Jewish Cemetery is devoid of grave stones, and literature sources and testimony indicate that this area was used for the mass burial of Jews from the Kaunas Ghetto and other mass killings. In Liepaja, the local Jewish Heritage Foundation believes that there are mass graves within the Livas Cemetery. Methodologies for this research include the use of a pulseEkko Pro 500-megahertz ground-penetrating radar (GPR) system. Electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) data were collected through a linear array of electrodes coupled to a direct current (DC) resistivity transmitter and receiver. Analysis of aerial photography and satellite images was also employed at each location. ERT and GPR data indicate three separate trench anomalies in the Old Jewish Cemetery in Riga. The presence of these anomalies corroborates Holocaust survivor testimony that bodies were buried in mass graves in that area. In the Zaliakalnis Jewish Cemetery in Kaunas, ERT and GPR data indicate an anomaly in the western part of the cemetery, and ERT data further indicate two other possible mass graves. In Liepaja, preliminary GPR analysis indicates an anomaly in a cleared section of the cemetery. Based on the presence of geophysical anomalies in all three cemeteries, which correlate with literature sources and Holocaust survivor testimony, there is a high probability that mass graves are present at each site. Future research directions include expanding the search areas in each cemetery, additional literature and testimony-based research, and the addition of other geophysical methodologies. The steep and unstable terrain found on debris-covered glaciers, rock glaciers, talus slopes, moraines and other proglacial features often make terrestrial ground-penetrating radar (GPR) surveys unsafe or cost-prohibitive. To address these challenges, this research introduces a novel approach for studying buried ice using multi-low-frequency drone-based GPR. Monostatic antennas of 50, 100, and 200 MHz were flown along a transect spanning a debris-covered glacier and an ice–debris complex at Shár Shaw Tagà (Grizzly Creek) in southwest Yukon, Canada. The drone-based results were compared to manual GPR at two locations along the transect. The two manual segments were conducted using the same radar system in a bi-static mode and included common mid-point (CMP) surveys. Overall, the drone-based radar successfully identified buried ice and enabled estimation of ice body thickness. Notably, CMP results confirmed layer characteristics and enabled depths to be measured across the entire drone-based transect. Discrimination of detail across a range of depths was made possible by comparing the three low frequencies, highlighting the possibility of using this method for future investigations of debris thickness in addition to quantifying buried ice.
