In exploring the male–female differentiation and differences in the seedling stage of the F1 generation of ginkgo hybrids, an early selection test for the cultivation and research of leafy or medicinal ginkgo industry was conducted, which may provide a basis for boosting the precision of the ginkgo industry. The hybrid F1 generation obtained from the cross-mating was used as material for the determination of growth and development, as well as of the physiology and biochemistry of the monocots, and the male and female differential genes were obtained based on the data of SNPs obtained from the GBS sequencing of the hybrid progeny. In the seedling stage of ginkgo hybrid offspring, male plants had a significantly higher nutrient growth capacity than female plants, while the total flavonoid and terpene lactone contents in female plants were higher than those of the male plants. This result can provide a corresponding theoretical basis for the use of ginkgo germplasm resources, which can make full use of the male and female differences in the seedling stage and maximize the benefits of early sex identification. As an important factor affecting ecological sustainability, the food industry's ecological efficiency (EE) deserves great attention and control. In 2013, China implemented a carbon emissions trading policy (CETP) to limit carbon emissions from various industries to promote the optimization of the ecological environment. To explore the ecological sustainability of China's food industry, identify the factors affecting the EE of the food industry, and study the influence heterogeneity and influencing mechanisms, the impact of the CETP on the food industry, which emits high volumes of greenhouse gasses, requires evaluation. Many scholars have studied the policy's effect from the perspective of EE, but they have ignored the food industry, which is the main carbon emitting sector, and there is a lack of heterogeneity analyses of the influencing factors. This study reviewed the implementation process and characteristics of the CETP in the past decades. Using provincial panel data from 2003 to 2019, this study measured the EE in the food industry through the difference-in-difference model, evaluated the emission reduction and economic effects of the CETP on the food industry, characterized the heterogeneity of the policy's effectiveness, and analysed its mechanism using three-stage mediating regression. The results showed that (1) the CETP significantly affected the food industry's EE, which increased by 38.3% on average in experimental provinces compared with non-experimental provinces. (2) For the food industry, the policy's effect was most significant in the food manufacturing and tobacco subsectors, and these subsectors in the experimental provinces increased by 66.0% and 39.7%, respectively; meanwhile, the policy's effect was not significant in agriculture and subsidiary food processing and beverage manufacturing. By industrial area, the policy's effects were significantly higher in the eastern region compared with the central and western regions. The influence on the food industry's EE in the eastern region was close to 150%, while in the central and western regions, it was not significant. (3) The CETP promoted the food industry's EE by improving energy consumption structure and technological innovation. The proportion of coal consumption decreased by 6.34% on average, and the technological innovation level increased by 25.1% on average in the experimental provinces' food industries. The research findings indicate that the CEPT is a good practice and worth spreading. For food industry enterprises with high carbon emissions, attention should be paid to low-carbon transformation through technological upgrading and management optimization. For policymakers, targeted policies are needed to establish a national unified carbon trading market so that the national carbon emissions can be controlled, and the gap between regional carbon emissions can be narrowed. Ginkgo biloba L. is a tree species of significant economic and ecological importance. Prior studies of the Ginkgo biloba seed coat have predominantly focused on the sarcotesta and sclerotesta, with less attention paid to the endotesta. In this study, the development and formation of Ginkgo endotesta were examined using light microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. The structural properties of the mature endotesta were analyzed using micro-CT imaging and scanning electron microscopy. The results indicate that the endotesta possess a membranous structure primarily originating from the inner bead peridium, a segment of bead core tissue, and the macrospore membrane. The endotesta from the middle constriction line to the chalazal end comprises a single layer with a greyish-white papery structure. In contrast, the endotesta was divided into two inner and two outer layers, from the middle constriction line to the micropylar end. The outer endosperm adheres closely to the sclerotesta, while the inner endosperm adheres to the seed kernel. The surface of the endotesta was irregularly raised, with thicker wax at the chalazal end, whereas the micropylar end demonstrated similar characteristics with thinner wax and tumor layers. The endotesta contained 17 amino acids, 18 fatty acids, 10 trace elements, and 7 vitamins. Overall, its nutritional value was relatively well balanced. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The illegal logging trade (ILT) is considered one of the major causes of global deforestation and ecological unsustainability. To prevent the price-suppressing damage caused by ILT to the local wood market and global ecological environment, the Chinese government and non-governmental organizations have taken many actions to deal with it. This study used wood trade data to analyze the current status of ILT in China, summarized the efforts and shortcomings of ILT response actions taken by China, and discussed the possible strategies and sustainable development prospects for combating ILT in China's future. After studying China's situation in the field of ILT and analyzing the advantages and disadvantages of China's measures to deal with ILT, this study found that the volume of ILT gradually increased in China from 2013 to 2020, which might also be one of the reasons for the slowdown in global ecological sustainability. The Chinese government and non-governmental organizations have taken many actions to deal with ILT through legislation, industry supervision, and international cooperation; to date, these response actions have achieved some positive results. Therefore, on this basis, this study proposed that China needs to further limit and manage ILT to achieve sustainable development of forest resources in the future. Strengthening the legislation, especially the restriction of ILT clauses, as a mandatory policy is the most important means to solve the ILT problem, which can provide the legal basis and a reference for other actions. Using economic means to encourage the import of legal wood is also a viable action to crowd out the trade of illegal wood. It is also necessary to promote an international certification system for wood and the standardization and systematization of logging is also a good way to mitigate ILT. Improving the management of wood being imported into China will fill a critical gap at the global scale in dealing with ILT and have positive impacts on combating global ILT. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Through a comprehensive regional systematic collection, we conducted a genetic diversity analysis of wild red-fruited Lycium resources across the entire northwest region of China. This study provides a valuable genetic basis for germplasm exploration and the selection of new Lycium varieties. Utilizing fluorescence capillary electrophoresis, we carefully screened 16 pairs of SSR primers exhibiting high polymorphism. Subsequently, we inferred the genetic diversity of Lycium germplasm through structure clustering, UPGMA analysis, and molecular AMOVA. The 113 Lycium barbarum samples collected from northwest China exhibited distinct subgroups, namely the Qinghai–Gansu–Ningxia subgroup and the Xinjiang subgroup. These subgroups were clearly distinguishable based on genetic clustering. The genetic diversity within the samples was remarkably rich, as indicated by a mean I value of 1.04, He value of 0.57, and PIC value of 0.73. Notably, the majority of genetic diversity (72.99%) was found within populations, signifying substantial intrapopulation variation. Furthermore, our findings revealed significant genetic differentiation among populations, with a substantial Fst value of 0.27 and gene flow Nm estimated at 0.68. This suggests that the genetic variation levels in northwest Lycium were notably high, primarily driven by pronounced genetic differentiation among populations. Nonetheless, it is important to note that genetic diversity predominantly persists within populations. The observed subpopulation structure of Qinghai–Gansu–Ningxia and Xinjiang regions in northwest China can be primarily attributed to geographical isolation. These geographical barriers have played a pivotal role in shaping the genetic differentiation and structure of Lycium populations in the region. Consequently, our study sheds light on the complex genetic landscape of Northwest Lycium and highlights the significance of considering both within-population diversity and population differentiation in conservation and breeding programs. As a representative of gymnosperms, the discovery of natural haploids of Ginkgo biloba L. has opened a new door for its research. Haploid germplasm has always been a research material of interest to researchers because of its special characteristics. However, we do not yet know the special features and mechanisms of haploid ginkgo following this significant discovery. In this study, we conducted a homogenous garden experiment on haploid and diploid ginkgo to explore the differences in growth, physiology and biochemistry between the two. Additionally, a high-depth transcriptome database of both was established to reveal their transcriptional differences. The results showed that haploid ginkgo exhibited weaker growth potential, lower photosynthesis and flavonoid accumulation capacity. Although the up-regulated expression of DEGs in haploid ginkgo reached 46.7% of the total DEGs in the whole transcriptome data, the gene sets of photosynthesis metabolic, glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and flavonoid biosynthesis pathways, which were significantly related to these differences, were found to show a significant down-regulated expression trend by gene set enrichment analysis (GSEA). We further found that the major metabolic pathways in the haploid ginkgo transcriptional database were down-regulated in expression compared to the diploid. This study reveals for the first time the phenotypic, growth and physiological differences in haploid ginkgos, and demonstrates their transcriptional patterns based on high-depth transcriptomic data, laying the foundation for subsequent in-depth studies of haploid ginkgos.
