In the practical application of hydraulic rotating machinery, it is essential to thoroughly explore drag reduction and rheological characteristics of drag-reducing additives to optimize machinery efficiency and reduce equipment consumption. This paper combines simulation and experimental approaches to investigate the drag-reduction performance and rheological properties of drag-reducing additives. Numerical simulations are initially conducted to investigate the shear-thinning properties of drag-reducing fluid and explore variations in drag-reduction rate. Turbulent phenomena characteristics are described by analyzing turbulent statistical quantities. Subsequently, the rheological behaviors of polyethylene oxide (PEO), cetyltrimethyl ammonium chloride (CTAC), and their mixed solutions under different conditions are scrutinized using a rotational rheometer. The findings indicate that the drag reduction effect amplifies as the rheological index n and characteristic time λ decrease. The numerical simulations show a maximum drag reduction rate of 20.18%. In rheological experiments, a three-stage viscosity variation is observed in single drag-reducing additives: shear thickening, shear thinning, and eventual stabilization. Composite drag-reducing additives significantly reduce the apparent viscosity at low shear rates, thereby strengthening the shear resistance of the system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Treatment of air pollution and health impacts are both crucial components of long-term sustainability. Measuring individual exposure to air pollution is significant to evaluating public health risks. In this paper, we introduce a big data analytics framework to quantify individual PM 2.5 exposure by combining residents' mobility traces and PM 2.5 concentration at a 1-km grid level. Diverging from traditional approaches reliant on population data, our methodology can accurately estimate the hourly PM 2.5 exposure at the individual level. Taking Shanghai as an example, we model one million anonymous users' mobility behavior based on 60 billion Call Detail Records (CDRs) data. By integrating users' stay locations and high-resolution PM 2.5 concentration, we quantify individual PM 2.5 exposure and find that the average PM 2.5 exposure of residences in Shanghai is 60.37 ug·h·m − 3 during the studied period. Further analysis reveals the unbalance of the spatiotemporal distribution of PM 2.5 exposure in Shanghai. Our PM 2.5 exposure estimation method provides a reliable evaluation of environmental hazards and public health predicaments confronted by residents, facilitating the formulation of scientific policies for environmental control, and thus advancing the realization of sustainable development. Natural products are treasure houses for modern drug discovery. Diphyllin is a natural arylnaphthalene lignan lactone isolated from the leaf of Astilboides tabularis. Studies have found that it possesses plenty of bioactivity characteristics. In this paper, we reviewed the structure, bioactivity, and mechanism of action of diphyllin and its derivatives. The references were obtained from PubMed, Web of Science, and Science Direct databases up to August 2023. Papers without a bio-evaluation were excluded. Diphyllin and its derivatives have demonstrated V-ATPase inhibition, anti-tumor, anti-virus, anti-biofilm, anti-inflammatory, and anti-oxidant activities. The most studied activities of diphyllin and its derivatives are V-ATPase inhibition, anti-tumor activities, and anti-virus activities. Furthermore, V-ATPase inhibition activity is the mechanism of many bioactivities, including anti-tumor, anti-virus, and anti-inflammatory activities. We also found that the galactosylated modification of diphyllin is a common phenomenon in plants, and therefore, galactosylated modification is applied by researchers in the laboratory to obtain more excellent diphyllin derivatives. Leakage at the lining joints of mountain tunnels is frequent. According to the waterproofing mechanism of waterstops, it is known that the deformation of middle-buried rubber waterstops under stress in typical operating conditions determines their waterproof performance. In addition to the deformation of the adjacent lining concrete, the structural parameters of waterstops are the main factors influencing their deformation under stress. This study combines the common structural components of middle-buried waterstops and considers the bond strength between waterstops and the concrete. A localized numerical model of the lining joint is constructed to explore the impact of geometric parameters, such as hole size, number and position of waterstop ribs, and length and thickness of wing plates on the stress-induced deformation and waterproof performance of the waterstops. The effective mechanisms of different components are revealed, and recommended structural parameters are proposed to further optimize the design of middle-buried rubber waterstops. In order to assess the safety of the secondary lining in water-rich Loess Tunnel, this study relies on the Yulinzi Tunnel project to continuously monitor the stress of the steel reinforcement in the secondary lining and analyze the temporal variation of the steel strain. Based on this data, the temporal variation and distribution characteristics of the internal forces of the structure were obtained through section force calculation. The safety factor of the secondary lining structure was evaluated by calculating the safety factor of the structure. It was found that the variation of the safety factor with time conforms to the exponential function, and the fitting results of different measurement points were good. This could be used to predict the future safety factor of the tunnel and evaluate its long-term safety, which has practical guidance significance for actual engineering projects. This study details microwave-absorbing materials made of natural rubber/nitrile butadiene rubber (NR/NBR) blends with multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and molybdenum disulfide (MoS2). The mechanical blending method and the influences of fabrication on the morphology and microwave-absorbing performance of resulting compounds were logically investigated. It was found that interfacial differences between the fillers and matrix promote the formation of MWCNTs and MoS2 networks in NR/NBR blends, thus improving microwave-absorbing performance. Compared with direct compounding, masterbatch-based two-step blending is more conducive to forming interpenetrating networks of MWCNTs/MoS2, endowing the resulting composite with better microwave attenuation capacity. Composites with MWCNTs in NR and MoS2 in NBR demonstrate the best microwave-absorbing performance, with a minimum reflection loss of −44.54 dB and an effective absorption bandwidth of 3.60 GHz. Exploring the relationship between morphology and electromagnetic loss behavior denotes that such improvement results from the selective distribution of dual fillers, inducing networking and multi-component-derived interfacial polarization enhancement. Simple Summary: Fall Armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) is one of the most important agricultural pests, which seriously threatens agricultural production and food security in China. The Yangtze River Delta is an important passage for the northward migration of S. frugiperda in eastern China, connecting the year-round breeding area in South China and the major maize planting area in Northern China. Understanding the migration dynamics in this area is crucial for the forecasting and controlling of this pest throughout the country. Based on three years' data (2019–2021) in the Yangtze Delta, the migration timing, migration pathway, the source area of immigrants and the potential landing area of emigrants were identified. It revealed that S. frugiperda mainly migrated into the Yangtze River Delta in May and June, and their progenies further migrated northward to Northern China mostly in July and August. The results of this paper will be helpful to further understand the migratory rules of S. frugiperda, and to provide a theoretical basis for pest forecasting and pest control. The Yangtze River Delta, located in East China, is an important passage on the eastern pathway of the northward migration of fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (Smith) in China, connecting China's year-round breeding area and the Huang-Huai-Hai summer maize area. Clarifying the migration dynamics of S. frugiperda in the Yangtze River Delta is of great significance for the scientific control and prevention of S. frugiperda in the Yangtze River Delta, even in the Huang-Huai-Hai region and Northeast China. This study is based on the pest investigation data of S. frugiperda in the Yangtze River Delta from 2019 to 2021, combining it with the migration trajectory simulation approach and the synoptic weather analysis. The result showed that S. frugiperda migrated to the Yangtze River Delta in March or April at the earliest, and mainly migrated to the south of the Yangtze River in May, which can be migrated from Guangdong, Guangxi, Fujian, Jiangxi, Hunan and other places. In May and June, S. frugiperda migrated further into the Jiang–Huai region, and its source areas were mainly distributed in Jiangxi, Hunan, Zhejiang, Jiangsu, Anhui and Hubei provinces. In July, it mainly migrated to the north of Huai River, and the source areas of the insects were mainly distributed in Jiangsu, Anhui, Hunan, Hubei and Henan. From the south of the Yangtze River to the north of the Huai River, the source areas of S. frugiperda were constantly moving north. After breeding locally, S. frugiperda can not only migrate to other regions of the Yangtze River Delta, but also to its surrounding provinces of Jiangxi, Hunan, Hubei, Henan, Shandong and Hebei, and even cross the Shandong Peninsula into Northeast China such as Liaoning and Jilin provinces. Trajectory simulation showed that the emigrants of S. frugiperda from the Yangtze River Delta moved northward, westward and eastward as wind direction was quite diverse in June–August. This paper analyzes the migration dynamics of S. frugiperda in the Yangtze River Delta, which has important guiding significance for the monitoring, early warning and the development of scientific prevention and control strategies for whole country. The recent discovery of 2D magnets has induced various intriguing phenomena due to the modulated spin polarization by other degrees of freedoms such as phonons, interlayer stacking, and doping. The mechanism of the modulated spin-polarization, however, is not clear. In this work, we demonstrate theoretically and computationally that interlayer magnetic coupling of the CrI3 bilayer can be well controlled by intercalation and carrier doping. Interlayer atomic intercalation and carrier doping have been proven to induce an antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) phase transition in the spin-polarization of the CrI3 bilayer. Our results revealed that the AFM to FM transition induced by atom intercalation was a result of enhanced superexchange interaction between Cr atoms of neighboring layers. FM coupling induced by O intercalation mainly originates from the improved superexchange interaction mediated by Cr 3d-O 2p coupling. FM coupling induced by Li intercalation was found to be much stronger than that by O intercalation, which was attributed to the much stronger superexchange by electron doping than by hole doping. This comprehensive spin exchange mechanism was further confirmed by our results of the carrier doping effect on the interlayer magnetic coupling. Simple Summary: The fall armyworm (FAW), an invasive migratory pest from the Americas, has been rapidly spreading through the Old World recently. Although it cannot survive winter periods in temperate and subtropical regions, adults re-invade these areas each spring or summer by virtue of their migratory capability. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the flight capability of FAW moths for monitoring and predicting the range and timing of this migration. In this study, we demonstrate that the potential migration duration (and thus distance) of a field population of FAW from South China is significantly greater than previously estimated. A strong migratory tendency was observed in 58% of individuals, and the longest self-powered flight distance was 116.7 km with a cumulative flight duration of 36.51 h during a 48-h period. Furthermore, our study documented that the low temperature threshold for flight of FAW was 13.1 °C. The results of this paper will be helpful to further understand the migratory rules and flight behavior of FAW, and to provide a theoretical basis for pest forecasting and pest control. The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith), is capable of long-distance migration; thus, evaluation of its flight capability is relevant to the design of monitoring and control strategies for this pest. Previous studies have quantified the flight ability of lab-reared populations under controlled conditions, but less is known about the flight capability of natural populations. In addition, the low temperature threshold for flight in natural populations also needs to be determined. In this study, the flight capability of S. frugiperda adults emerging from field-collected larvae in South China was measured by a flight mill system. The results show that the flight capability of S. frugiperda moths varied greatly between individuals, and that some adults are capable of flying great distances. The longest self-powered flight distance was 116.7 km with a cumulative flight duration of 36.51 h during a 48-h period. Typically, the flight activity of tethered individuals was relatively stable during the first 12 h, indicating that migrating moths can fly through an entire night. Based on the accumulated flight duration in the first 12 h, moths can be clearly divided into two groups (<5 h and ≥5 h flight duration), and 58% of individuals belonged to the latter group with strong migratory tendency. Further, flight activity under low temperature conditions was tested, and the results of a logit generalized linear model indicate that the low temperature flight threshold of S. frugiperda is 13.1 °C under declining temperatures. The linings of tunnels in cold regions with long service lives usually have cracks, with parts of the structure peeling and falling off, which seriously threatens the tunnel safety and operation. The unsaturated freeze–thaw cycle of concrete, which is the main cause of structural deterioration, has not received much research attention. During the service life of tunnels in cold regions, unsaturated freeze–thaw cycles deteriorate the quality of the concrete, and its degree presents a gradual distribution in the circumferential and longitudinal directions. An experiment system was adopted to simulate the distribution of the progressive deterioration of tunnel lining concrete. The test results of the temperature field of the model show the distribution law of freeze–thaw cycles, and the gradual deterioration of the lining concrete was realized. Then, the bearing capacity of the model was tested after the progressive deterioration. The results show that the ultimate load of the model decreases with an increase in the number of freeze–thaw cycles. Finally, a numerical simulation was carried out to discuss the influence of the gradual deterioration of the lining. The gradual deterioration of lining concrete will encourage the gradual development of cracks, leading to serious cracking of the lining structure and even block spalling. The effect of the silicon to aluminum ratio (SAR) and alkali metal cations on adsorption and diffusion properties of ZSM-5 and silicate-1 zeolites was investigated using n-hexane as the model probe via giant canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. A wide range of SAR was considered in this study to explore the possible adsorption sites in the zeolites. The findings show that, at 298 K and 423 K, adsorption and diffusion of n-hexane on/in low SAR (≤50) H-ZSM-5 models were promoted due to the preferable distribution of n-hexane in straight channels and enhanced interaction between protons and n-hexane molecules (about 24 kcal·mol−1). In alkali metal cation (i.e., Na+ and K+) exchanged ZSM-5, the alkali metal cations affected transport of molecules, which led to significant differences in their adsorption and diffusion properties compared to HZSM-5. In the Na+ and K+ systems, lower saturated adsorption capacities were predicted compared to that of silicate-1, which could be attributed to the decrease in effective void size posed by alkali–metal cations. In addition, simulation results also suggested that the T9 and T3 are the most likely sites for n-hexane adsorption, followed by T2, T5, and T10. The electronic structure and band offsets of blue phosphorus/WSe2 van der Waals (vdW) heterostructure are investigated via performing first-principles calculations. Blue phosphorus/WSe2 vdW heterostructure exhibits modulation of bandgaps by the applied vertical compressive strain, and a large compressive strain of more than 23% leads to a semiconductor-to-metal transition. Blue phosphorus/WSe2 vdW heterostructure is demonstrated to have a type-II band alignment, which promotes the spontaneous spatial separation of photo-excited electrons and holes. Furthermore, electrons concentrating in BlueP and holes in WSe2 can be enhanced by applied compressive strain, resulting in an increase of carrier concentration. Therefore, these properties make blue phosphorus/WSe2 vdW heterostructure a good candidate for future applications in photodetection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Inspection images of power transmission line provide vision interaction for the operator and the environmental perception for the cable inspection robot (CIR). However, inspection images are always contaminated by severe outdoor working conditions such as uneven illumination, low contrast, and speckle noise. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel method based on Retinex and fuzzy enhancement to improve the image quality of the inspection images. A modified multi-scale Retinex (MSR) is proposed to compensate the uneven illumination by processing the low frequency components after wavelet decomposition. Besides, a fuzzy enhancement method is proposed to perfect the edge information and improve contrast by processing the high frequency components. A noise reduction procedure based on soft threshold is used to avoid the noise amplification. Experiments on the self-built standard test dataset show that the algorithm can improve the image quality by 3–4 times. Compared with several other methods, the experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can obtain better enhancement performance with more homogeneous illumination and higher contrast. Since the initial discovery of recurrent isocitrate dehydrogenase 1 ( IDH1) mutations at Arg132 in glioma, IDH1 hotspot mutations have been identified in cholangiocarcinoma, chondrosarcoma, leukemia, and various other types of cancer of sporadic incidence. Studies in glioma and leukemia have helped promote the theory that IDH1 mutations are an oncogenic event that drives tumorigenesis in general. Through bioinformatic analysis of more than 45,000 human pan-cancer samples from three independent datasets, we show here that IDH1 mutations are rare events in human cancer but are exclusively prevalent in WHO grade II and grade III (lower-grade) glioma. Interestingly, alterations in the tumor-suppressor gene TP53 (tumor protein p53) co-occur significantly with IDH1 mutations and show a tendency of exclusivity to IDH2 mutations. The co-occurrence of IDH1 mutation and TP53 alteration is widespread in glioma, particularly in those harboring IDH1 R132H , IDH1 R132G , and IDH1 R132S , whereas co-occurrence of IDH1 R132C and TP53 alteration can be found sporadically in other cancer types. In keeping with the importance of p53 in tumor suppression, TP53 status is an independent predictor of overall survival irrespective of histological and molecular subgroups in lower-grade glioma. Together, these results indicate tissue specificity of IDH1 hotspot mutation and TP53 alteration and the importance of TP53 status as a predictor of patient outcome in lower-grade glioma.
