Cellulose-based sorbents are promising materials for wastewater treatment due to their environmental friendliness, biodegradability, and high sorption capacity. This paper presents an overview of cellulose modification methods, including carboxylation, amination, oxidation, graphene, and plasma treatments, as well as combined approaches. Their effect on key physicochemical properties, such as porosity, morphology, and chemical stability, is considered. Examples from the literature confirm the effectiveness of modified cellulose sorbents in removing heavy metal ions and organic pollutants from wastewater. The analysis shows that combined methods allow for creating materials with improved characteristics that are resistant to extreme operating conditions. The main advantages and disadvantages of cellulose sorbents, as well as challenges associated with their scalability and cost-effectiveness, are discussed. Green hydrogen, produced by water electrolysis using renewable energy sources (RES), is an emerging technology that aligns with sustainable development goals and efforts to address climate change. In addition to energy, electrolyzers require ultrapure water to operate. Although seawater is abundant on the Earth, it must be desalinated and further purified to meet the electrolyzer's feeding water quality requirements. This paper reviews seawater purification processes for electrolysis. Three mature and commercially available desalination technologies (reverse osmosis, multiple-effect distillation, and multi-stage flash) were examined in terms of working principles, performance parameters, produced water quality, footprint, and capital and operating expenditures. Additionally, pretreatment and post-treatment techniques were explored, and the brine management methods were investigated. This paper investigates the elution behavior of scandium from D2EHPA (Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phosphoric acid)-impregnated resins that proceed with metal loading from acidic chloride solutions. D2EHPA resins stem from their recognized selectivity for Sc extraction from acidic solutions. This study focuses on the elution process after ion-exchange extraction and examines various elution systems to achieve selective Sc recovery. Among the tested elution media, fluoride-based systems were proven effective for Sc desorption. The elution of the resins was demonstrated in a column set-up, where complete and selective elution of Sc was achieved. Τhis study contributes to the advancement of Sc extraction methods from chloride solutions, offering valuable insights for industrial applications, especially emphasizing the importance of optimizing the elution step for achieving efficient recovery of Sc. 90Sr is one of the highly radioactive and hazardous nuclides in nuclear waste liquids. The high water solubility and mobility of 90Sr2+ ions make it difficult to effectively remove 90Sr from the complex aqueous environment. Herein, K2SbPO6, a phosphatoantimonate ion exchange material with an excellent removal ability for Sr2+ ions, has been organically granulated with polyacrylonitrile (PAN) by an automated method to form K2SbPO6/PAN composite microspheres. The K2SbPO6/PAN microspheres with radiation resistance exhibit a high maximum adsorption capacity (qmSr) of 131.15 mg g−1 for Sr2+ ions and retain the high removal rate (RSr) in a wide pH range (pH = 3–12). It is important that K2SbPO6/PAN microspheres could efficiently treat Sr2+ ions solutions in a dynamic adsorption manner even at 970 bed volumes (RSr > 81%). This work paves the way for the preparation of low-cost ion exchange materials with the advantages of regular shape and easy operation by a simple and fast method and the practical application of powdered ion exchange materials. The purification and removal of polar impurities in olefin feedstocks is crucial for downstream deep processing, and adsorption is the main method for deep purification of such impurities. This article takes dimethyl ether, a typical oxygen-containing compound impurity in MTOs, as a polar impurity molecule, and LTA and FAU topological zeolites as research objects. The influence of zeolite topology, morphology, skeleton silicon–aluminum (Si/Al) ratio, and ion type on the adsorption and removal of trace dimethyl ether was investigated by XRD, SEM, XRF, and nitrogen adsorption–desorption methods. The FAU topological zeolites show a better adsorption performance for dimethyl ether owing to their larger specific surface area and unobstructed pores compared with LTA zeolites. Among FAU topological zeolites, the NaX zeolite a with lower framework silica–alumina ratio has the highest adsorption capacity for dimethyl ether. Magnesium ion exchange on NaX zeolites (MgNaX) reduce the specific surface area and adsorption capacity of the NaX zeolite. However, after forming with alumina as a binder, the adsorption capacity of the MgNaX–Al2O3 adsorbent is about 13% higher than that of the NaX–Al2O3 adsorbent without Mg ion exchange. This may be due to the decomposition of residual organic Mg salts in the Mg ion exchange samples during high-temperature calcination, resulting in a larger specific surface area for the formed adsorbent. Further characterization of NH3–TPD and CO2–TPD shows that Mg ion exchange weakens the acid–base active sites on the adsorbent surface. The reduction in acid–base sites reduces the occurrence of side reactions such as polymerization and isomerization caused by the exothermic adsorption of olefins on adsorbents. Highly alkaline hydrogels are gaining increasing attention in building materials research. Specifically, cationic alkaline hydrogels based on diallyldimethylammonium hydroxide (DADMAOH) as the monomer have been effectively used to seal water-bearing cracks or serve as coupling media for electrochemical chloride extraction. However, the residual halogen content and challenges in scaling up monomer production have hindered broader application. Attempts to use a commercially available cation-selective membrane for ion exchange achieved up to 90% chloride-to-hydroxide switch, but the approach proved ineffective due to significant monomer decomposition during the process. By contrast, neutral gels and gel particles can be readily prepared from diallyldimethylammonium chloride (DADMAC) in large quantities and with a wide range of compositions. It is demonstrated here that these neutral gel particles undergo inverse static anion exchange when suspended in NaOH solution, generating DADMAOH particles with residual halide contents of <0.3%, without the need for ion-selective or dialysis membranes. This corresponds to an up to 100-fold reduction in residual chloride content compared to particles produced directly from alkaline monomer solutions, thereby significantly enhancing the efficiency of hydroxide ion release. The swelling behaviour of the particles is primarily influenced by the initial monomer concentration, while conductivity remains largely unaffected, indicating that charge transport occurs mainly along the particle surface. Despite the pronounced increase in swelling with decreasing particle radii, the specific conductivity of 2.8 Ω−1 m−1 is still sufficient for their use as coupling media in concrete applications. In summary, the alkaline particles prepared via inverse static anion exchange meet all necessary requirements for building materials applications, offering a broader range of tuneable properties and greater ease of production compared to gels or particles derived from DADMAOH. This review contains data on a wide class of microporous materials with frameworks belonging to the sodalite topological type. Various methods for the synthesis of these materials, their structural and crystal chemical features, as well as physical and chemical properties are discussed. Specific properties of sodalite-related materials make it possible to consider they as thermally stable ionic conductors, catalysts and catalyst carriers, sorbents, ion exchangers for water purification, matrices for the immobilization of radionuclides and heavy metals, hydrogen and methane storage, and stabilization of chromophores and phosphors. It has been shown that the diversity of properties of sodalite-type materials is associated with the chemical diversity of their frameworks and extra-framework components, as well as with the high elasticity of the framework. Graphene-based adsorbents show great potential for application in the field of environmental pollution treatment due to their unique two-dimensional structure, high specific surface area, and tunable surface chemistry. This paper reviews the research on the application of graphene and its derivatives as novel adsorbents in the field of wastewater treatment in recent years, focusing on the preparation and functionalization of graphene-based adsorbents, as well as their adsorption performance and mechanism of action in the removal of inorganic and organic pollutants, and provides an outlook on the future directions of the research on graphene-based adsorbents. The analysis in this paper focuses on the functionalization of graphene-based adsorbents by introducing magnetic particles, hybridization with other materials, and grafting with polymers. The modified graphene-based adsorbents showed significant adsorption and removal of pollutants and were easy to recycle and regenerate. The adsorption of pollutants on graphene-based adsorbents is mainly carried out through π–π interaction, hydrogen bonding, and electrostatic interaction, which is related to the structure of the pollutants. Future research directions on graphene-based adsorbents should focus on in-depth adsorption mechanism studies and the development of cost-effective graphene-based adsorbents for wastewater treatment. This manuscript describes molybdenum recovery from copper Pregnant Leaching Solutions (PLSs) in the copper oxide mining industry with high contents of chloride ions. This product was recovered from the copper leaching pond solutions of the Chilean National Copper Mining Corporation (CODELCO) using the ion exchange process. This process recovered molybdenum from initial Mo concentrations of 50 mg/L using two different anion−exchange resins. The first experiments, with 1 g/L Cl−, achieved recovery yields of 90% and molybdenum concentrates as CaMoO4. However, the process was permanently halted because of the early saturation of the ion exchange resins given by high chloride concentrations (10 g/L Cl−) of the original copper PLS and the significant reagent consumption given by the low adsorption capacity. Static studies were developed to determine the adsorption isotherms, followed by continuous molybdenum recovery tests. The Langmuir adsorption parameters were determined as a function of the chloride concentration, giving absorption capacities from 180 to 250 mg Mo/gram of resin and recoveries from 63% to 90%. The breakthrough values for the DOWEX and Lewatit resins for chloride contents of 10 g/L were 180 and 245 BV, respectively, while for 1 g/L, these values were 620 and 890 BV. This allowed obtaining elution solutions of 890 mg Mo/L for the DOWEX resin and 1000 mg Mo/L for the Lewatit resin. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The effective recovery of gallium from wastewater discharge in the Bayer process is promising for the long-term development of gallium resources. The adsorption and desorption behavior of gallium (Ga), vanadium (V), and aluminum (Al) ions on a strong acidic styrene cation exchange resin (JK resin) from a simulated Bayer solution was systematically investigated by static experiments. The results showed that the optimum conditions for separating Ga from V and Al were at low temperatures and short contact times, with 78.30%, 15.16%, and 6.63% of the adsorption efficiency at 25 °C and 60 min, respectively, for Ga, V, and Al. The adsorption kinetics of Ga3+ conformed to the pseudo-second order model, and the static saturation adsorption capacity was 18.25 mg/g. The Langmuir model fitted the adsorption isotherm of gallium well, and the maximum adsorption capacity was 1.11 mg/g at 25 °C. FT-IR spectroscopy and XPS showed that the mechanism of the Ga3+ adsorption was only related to the interaction of the oxygen atoms of the amide oxime group (C=NOH). The separation of Ga, V, and Al can be achieved by desorbing 98% of Al with low concentrations of ammonia and 90% of Ga with low concentrations of hydrochloric acid. Real textile wastewater (RTWW) poses significant environmental challenges. RTWW typically contains high levels of organic compounds, such as dyes, as well as inorganic substances like salts. These contaminants can harm aquatic life when released into water bodies without appropriate treatment. RTWW was subjected to a series of sequential treatments: exchange resins for removing ions, advanced oxidation with bicarbonate-activated peroxide to degrade organic matter, and a biological treatment based on the Zahn–Wellens test to remove remaining chemical oxygen demand (COD) The advanced oxidation process based on the activation of H2O2 with NaHCO3 (catalyzed with cobalt impregnated on a pillared clay, Co/Al–PILC)) was optimized using central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM). After the process integration, reductions in ion concentrations, chemical oxygen demand (COD), and total organic carbon content (TOC) were achieved. Reduced hardness (99.94%) and ions (SO42− and acid black 194 dye of 99.88 and 99.46%, respectively), COD (96.64%), and TOC (96.89%), guaranteeing complete treatment of RTWW, were achieved. Additionally, the biodegradability index of RTWW increased from 0.28 ± 0.01 to 0.90 ± 0.01, and phytotoxicity was reduced, going from a phytotoxic that inhibited the germination of lettuce seeds to a phytostimulant after biological treatment with activated sludge. Biochar is a soil amendment that has the potential to effectively improve soil salinization. However, there is a paucity of studies on sodium adsorption using biochar, and the adsorption mechanism remains unclear. To better understand the adsorption mechanism of Na+ on the surface of biochar, both pyrochar and hydrochar were produced at different temperatures. The capacity and influencing factors of Na+ adsorption in biochar were analyzed via batch adsorption experiments. Pore filling dominated the Na+ adsorption in the concentration of the NaCl solution when it was ≤100 mg/L, where wheat straw pyrochar (WB, 3.95–4.94 mg/g Na) and poplar wood chip pyrochar (PB, 0.62–0.70 mg/g Na) presented the release and adsorption of Na+, respectively. When the concentration of the NaCl solution was >100 mg/L, the adsorption capacity of WB (25.44–36.45 mg/g) was significantly higher than PB (4.46–6.23 mg/g). Both the adsorption and release of Na+ in hydrochar was insufficient. In a high concentration of NaCl solution, ion exchange became the key mechanism determining the adsorption of Na+ in pyrochar, in which K+ contributed to more than 94% of the Na+ adsorption. The findings proposed strategies for the structural design of biochar used for Na adsorption. Perfluorosulfonated anionic ionomers are known for their robust ion conductivity and chemical and mechanical stability. However, the structure and transport property degradation of perfluorinated cationic polymers (PfCPs) are not well understood. Herein, we propose an ion-exchange strategy to identify the structural degradation, ion transport mechanisms, and architectural reformation of PfCPs. Particularly, we demonstrate that the utility of a –SO2–N+ strategy employing the Menshutkin reaction cannot yield reliable PfCPs and anion-exchange membranes, but can yield an unreliable zwitterionic intermediate (cations–anions molar ratio is approximately 7.6%). Moreover, the degradation products were efficiently reformed as proton exchange membranes (PEMs), and the as-reformed PEMs achieved an ion-exchange capacity (IEC) value (0.89 mmol g−1), meanwhile retaining more than 94.7% of their initial capacity. Furthermore, the fuel cell assembled with reformed PEMs displayed a power density of 0.91 Wcm−2 at 2.32 A cm−2, which was 90.1% of that of the robust perfluorosulfonic acid PEMs. Our combined findings shed some fresh light on the state of understanding of the structure–property relationship in PfCPs. Hydrometallurgical gold recovery processes play a pivotal role in the gold mining industry, contributing to more than 90% of global gold production. Among the array of techniques available, the Merrill–Crowe process, adsorption, ion exchange, and solvent extraction are central in extracting gold from leach solutions. While the Merrill–Crowe process and gold complex adsorption onto activated carbon represent historical cornerstones, their inherent limitations have prompted the emergence of more recent innovations in ion exchange and solvent extraction, offering enhanced selectivity, control, and sustainability. The evolution of modern organic chemistry has significantly influenced the progress of ion exchange technology, mainly through the introduction of advanced polymer matrix synthetic resins. At the same time, novel solvents tailored to gold complex interactions have revitalized ion exchange and solvent extraction. Introducing ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents has also added a new dimension to efforts to improve gold extraction metallurgy. This paper reviews these cutting-edge developments and their potential to revolutionize the hydrometallurgical gold recovery process, addressing the pressing need for improved efficiency and environmental responsibility. Fly ash was used as raw material to prepare zeolites through silicate gels, assisted by the hydrothermal method. The silicate gels could be effectively formed in a few minutes in a molten alkali environment. The zeolites could be prepared by using these silicate gels through the hydrothermal method, which realizes the transformation from useless materials to highly valuable materials. The obtained zeolites were applied to the removal of ammonium in water, achieving the highvalue utilization of fly ash. The synthesized zeolites were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive spectrum (EDS), thermogravimetric (TG), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. The study on the adsorption and removal of ammonium in water shows that the adsorption of ammonium is more in line with pseudo first-order kinetics, and the adsorption mainly occurs in the first 20 min. The adsorption can reach equilibrium in 30 min, and the maximum adsorption capacity can reach 49.1 mg/g. The adsorption capacity of ammonium has the best performance at pH = 5. Fine chemicals are produced in small annual volume batch processes (often <10,000 tonnes per year), with a high associated price (usually >USD 10/kg). As a result of their usage in the production of speciality chemicals, in areas including agrochemicals, fragrances, and pharmaceuticals, the need for them will remain high for the foreseeable future. This review article assesses current methods used to produce fine chemicals with heterogeneous catalysts, including both well-established and newer experimental methods. A wide range of methods, utilising microporous and mesoporous catalysts, has been explored, including their preparation and modification before use in industry. Their potential drawbacks and benefits have been analysed, with their feasibility compared to newer, recently emerging catalysts. The field of heterogeneous catalysis for fine chemical production is a dynamic and ever-changing area of research. This deeper insight into catalytic behaviour and material properties will produce more efficient, selective, and sustainable processes in the fine chemical industry. The findings from this article will provide an excellent foundation for further exploration and a critical review in the field of fine chemical production using micro- and mesoporous heterogeneous catalysts. Though nowadays germanium does not reach the range of popularity of other metals, i.e., rare earth elements, its utility in target industries makes it a strategic metal. Though germanium can be found in a series of raw materials, the principal source for its recovery is from secondary wastes of the zinc industry; also, the recyclability of germanium-bearing waste materials is becoming of interest. In this recovery and due to the size of the target materials, because the diffusion and reaction are to be considered, hydrometallurgy performs a key role in achieving this goal. The present work reviews the most recent applications (2023 and 2024 years) of hydrometallurgical operations on the recovery of germanium from different solid and liquid sources. Nowadays, there is a need for new sources of noble metals due to their dwindling natural resources. This paper presents studies on the sorption of noble metals such as Au(III), Pt(IV), Pd(II) and Rh(III) from model chloride solutions on a newly prepared Amberlite XAD-16–Aliquat 336 sorbent. A "warm impregnation" method without the use of toxic organic solvents was applied to impregnate the polymer matrix. The influence of such factors as hydrochloric acid concentration, sorbent mass and phase contact time was investigated. Kinetic as well as adsorption isotherm studies were carried out. The sorption capacity of the synthesized sorbent was Au(III)—94.34 mg/g, Pt(IV)—45.35 mg/g and Pd(II)—46.03 mg/g. Based on thermodynamic considerations, their sorption proved to be endothermic, as the values of ΔH° > 0. Sorption was spontaneous and favourable (ΔG° < 0). After leaching the RAM module, there was obtained a real solution, in which the metal contents were determined: 38.10 mg/g of gold and 1.76 mg/g of palladium. We demonstrate that applying DC voltage at room temperature to an ion-exchanged glass induces quadratic optical nonlinearity in a subsurface region of the glass. We associate this with the EFISH (Electric-Field-Induced Second Harmonic) effect due to the Maxwell–Wagner charge accumulation in the subsurface region of the glass, in which a conductivity gradient forms as a result of the ion exchange processing. The second harmonic (SH) signal from the soda–lime glass subjected to potassium-for-sodium ion exchange is comparable with one from the same glass after thermal poling. The signal linearly increases with the duration of the ion exchange. The lower mobility of the potassium ions results in a higher SH signal from the potassium-for-sodium exchanged glass than that from the silver-for-sodium ion-exchanged one. This phenomenon is resistant to thermal annealing: only a 500 °C anneal caused noticeable degradation of the SH signal after "charging" the specimen. The phenomenon found is of interest for characterizing graded conductivity regions and providing and controlling second-order optical nonlinearity in transparent isotropic media. Irrigation of calcareous soil with saline–sodic water can modify the composition of the soil solution and exchange complexes in agricultural land of arid and semi-arid regions with low water resources. The objective of this study was to monitor (medium-term) potential changes in a calcareous clay soil irrigated with two types of sodic waters without cropping. Irrigation water with two high sodium adsorption ratios (SAR = 20 and 40) and electrical conductivity (EC < 3 dS m−1) was prepared using NaCl and NaHCO3 salts. The sodic irrigation waters were applied (June–October) in three periods (1, 2, and 4; one period = five irrigations) to bare non-saline soil with drip irrigation during two growing seasons; no irrigation action was taken in the winter–spring rainy season (period 3). Sampling (0–30 cm) was made after each period to determine the changes in soil pH, EC, water-soluble Na+, Ca2+, Mg2+, K+, Cl−, and HCO3−. Relative to the control, irrigation with both sodic waters increased soil pH, EC, and water-soluble Na+ and decreased or did not change water-soluble cations (Ca2+, Mg2+). The Cl− concentration increased rapidly with NaCl-type water application, but it was leached away quickly by winter–spring rains. The HCO3− concentration increased with NaHCO3-type water application, yet it leached out slowly in the rainy period. The movement of HCO3− ions in the upper soil profile (0–30 cm) was significantly slower compared to Cl− ions. Dissolution of slightly soluble soil CaCO3 by irrigation increased the solution concentration of Ca2+ and its mobility, yet the kinetics of processes depended on water type and irrigation period. The released Ca2+ interacted with other cations in the soil, causing further significant positive physicochemical changes in the soil solution and exchange capacity (comparable with control soil) at the end of the irrigation period. The CaCO3 content in the soil would be a long-term guarantee of the Ca2+ resource in soils, even if the amount of water-soluble Ca2+ may decrease for the short-term period during irrigation. The use of eco-friendly biomass as a resource is an efficient way to address the problems of fossil fuel depletion and climate change. In biomass conversion, versatile γ-valerolactone (GVL) is generally obtained from levulinic acid (LA) hydrogenation via a multimetallic catalyst system. Despite conversion efficiency being enhanced in mild conditions due to metal interactions, maintaining high catalyst stability is still a challenge. In this study, we synthesized a surrounded Co0.52Ni0.48@Al2O3-IE catalyst that exhibited excellent alloying and synergistic interaction between the metal constituents. Under relatively mild reaction conditions, the GVL yield over the catalyst exceeded 99% in LA hydrogenation. The catalyst showed no deactivation in a test of five cycles, displaying superiority in stability, possibly due to reasons of the physical isolation of the shell and the alumina retention on the Co-Ni alloys surface caused by the reversibility of exchange equilibrium. The present work demonstrated that a surrounded structured catalyst fabricated by ion exchange (IE) with active metals physically enclosed can lead to high catalytic activity and superior stability. In this study, the facile removal of the chromium-complex-based reactive azo dye C. I. Reactive Black 8 (RB8) from model wastewaters by the co-action of alternative sorbents—biochar (BC) and bentonite (BT)—with ionic liquids such as benzalkonium chloride (BAC) or Aliquat 336 (A336) was studied. The experiments using model RB8-containing wastewater proved that the co-action of BAC with BC is the most promising method of RB8 separation from wastewater containing 1 g L−1 of RB8 dye. The application of 2 g L−1 BC in co-action with 1.5 g L−1 BAC or 1 g L−1 BT in co-action with 2 g L−1 BAC enables the removal of more than 98% of contaminant RB8 after 30 min of action. Similar removal efficiency (RE) was achieved using 40 g L−1 of powdered activated carbon (PAC) after 180 min of action. To reach the same RE using real RB8-containing wastewater, a four times higher dose of BC and a four times higher dose of BAC per gram of removed RB8 were required. The proposed mechanism of RB8 removal by the co-action of alternative sorbents with BAC comprises a parallel effect of (i) sorption, (ii) the formation of less polar ion pairs accompanied by their sorption on an alternative sorbent and (iii) the separation of used alternative sorbents covered with ion pairs. The removal efficiency of organic contaminant(s) from both model and real wastewater was evaluated by VIS spectroscopy applying the Lambert–Beer law and by the determination of chemical oxidation demand (COD) and/or adsorbable organically bound halogen (AOX) parameters. The removal of hydrogen sulfide from natural gas and other gases such as biogas, refinery gases, and coal gas is required because it is toxic and corrosive, even in traces. Zeolites are widely used in the removal of H2S from the abovementioned gases. In this work, we prepared an Ag-exchanged 13X molecular sieve by using different concentrations of AgNO3 to increase its adsorption properties. XRD, SEM, and BET techniques were used to characterize samples. To determine the adsorption properties of each of the samples, a laboratory setup with a fixed-bed adsorber was utilized. The adsorption capacity of modified 13X increased when the molar concentration of AgNO3 increased from 0.02 M to 0.05 M. However, the breakthrough time was attained quicker at a high molar concentration of 0.1 M AgNO3, indicating a low adsorption capacity. When compared to unmodified 13X, the adsorption capacity of AgII-13X increased by about 50 times. This study explores silver-molecular-cluster-containing microspheres for advanced sensors. These microspheres are synthesized through an ion exchange process with silver nitrate and sodium nitrate, creating unique optical properties. A simulation shows an enhanced radiation interaction due to extended fundamental mode propagation. This study investigates luminescence in the visible range (400–600 nm) when excited by long-wavelength UV light (360–410 nm), offering the potential for sensing applications. In this research, the removal of boron and arsenic from geothermal water was examined by using novel N-methyl-d-glucamine functionalized gel-like resins (abbreviated as 1JW and 2JW) synthesized by the membrane emulsification method. The outcomes were compared with those of commercially available boron selective chelating ion exchange resin (Diaion CRB 05). According to the results obtained with the novel resins, it was possible to reduce both boron and arsenic concentrations in geothermal water by using these novel gel-like chelating resins below their permissible levels for agricultural irrigation (<1 mg B/L) and drinking water (<0.01 mg As/L) by using the batch method. The optimum resin concentration required for almost complete boron removal (more than 95%) with the two chelating resins was determined to be 2 g/L. The novel gel-like chelating resins 1JW and 2JW achieved 94% of arsenic removal by using the resin concentration of 8 g/L, while the required resin concentration was 32 g/L for 94% of arsenic removal using commercially available Diaion CRB05 resin. In addition, the column performance characteristics of the novel chelating resins for the separation of boron were studied, and the results were compared to those obtained with Diaion CRB05. Clay minerals have a specific adsorption capability for anions, which increases the amount of net negative charge on the surface, leading to the increased adsorption of rare-earth ions in clay minerals and some change from exchangeable to non-exchangeable. Further, anions show a shielding effect on rare-earth ions. The shielding capacity of anions in the leaching agents for rare-earth ions was measured in this study. The relationship between the solid-phase concentration of rare-earth ions shielded and the anion concentration was consistent with the Langmuir model. Based on the Kerr model describing the exchange of rare-earth ions by ammonium ions, an ion-exchange model considering the shielding influence of anions was proposed. The accuracy of the proposed model was higher than that of the Kerr model. When the leaching agent was ammonium sulfate, the calculation accuracy of XW and AY samples was increased by 1.15% and 5.75%, respectively. The improvement in accuracy positively correlated with the proportion of iron oxides, aluminium oxides, and Kaolin. The ion exchange of Na+ cations was used to photosensitise titanates nanotubes (Ti-NTs) with tris(2,2'-bipyridine)ruthenium(II) cations (Ru(bpy)32+); this yielded a light-sensitised Ti-NTs composite denoted as (Ru(bpy)3)Ti-NTs, exhibiting the characteristic absorption of Ru(bpy)32+ in visible light. Incident photon-to-current efficiency (IPCE) measurements and the photocatalytic reduction of methyl viologen reaction confirmed that in the photosensitisation of the (Ru(bpy)3)Ti-NTs composite, charge transfer and charge separation occur upon excitation by ultraviolet and visible light irradiation. The photocatalytic potential of titanate nanotubes was tested in the water-splitting reaction and the H2 evolution reaction using a sacrificial agent and showed photocatalytic activity under various light sources, including xenon–mercury lamp, simulated sunlight, and visible light. Notably, in the conditions of the H2 evolution reaction when (Ru(bpy)3)Ti-NTs were submitted to simulated sunlight, they exceeded the photocatalytic activity of pristine Ti-NTs and TiO2 by a factor of 3 and 3.5 times, respectively. Also, (Ru(bpy)3)Ti-NTs achieved the photocatalytic water-splitting reaction under simulated sunlight and visible light, producing, after 4 h, 199 and 282 μmol×H2×gcat−1. These results confirm the effective electron transfer of Ru(bpy)3 to titanate nanotubes. In this work, a common third-generation environmentally friendly quaternary ammonium salt disinfectant, dimethyl dioctadecyl ammonium chloride (DDAC), was used as the modifier to achieve one-step rapid preparation of the modified red-mud-based adsorption material under the condition of microwave assistance, and applied it to the adsorption phosphorus in solutions. After the process of this modification, the structure of the red mud (RM) was not changed, and the DDAC modification could provide more adsorption active sites. The adsorption experiments indicated that the novel modified red mud (NMRM) exhibited a good adsorption performance for phosphorus. The adsorption capability of NMRM for phosphorus was significantly enhanced, and was about eight times higher than that of the initial RM. The kinetics model of the pseudo-second-order, which implied that phosphorus was chemically adsorbed on the surface of the NMRM, could accurately represent the adsorption procedure of NMRM. The adsorption equilibrium of NMRM could be better depicted using the isotherm model of Freundlich. It was speculated that the ion exchange might be responsible for the adsorption mechanism of NMRM for phosphorus. Four new metal–organic frameworks based on cobalt(II) salts and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane N,N'-dioxide (odabco) were obtained. Their crystallographic formulae are [Co3(odabco)2(OAc)6] (1, OAc− = acetate), [Co(H2O)2(HCOO)2]·odabco (2), [Co2(H2O)(NO3)(odabco)5](NO3)3·3.65H2O (3), and [Co2(DMF)2(odabco)4](NO3)4·3H2O (4; DMF = N,N-dimethylformamide). Crystal structures of 1–4 were determined by single-crystal X-ray crystallography. Coordination polymer 1 comprises binuclear and mononuclear metal–acetate blocks alternating within uncharged one-dimensional chains, in which odabco acts as a bridging ligand. A layered Co(II) formate 2 contains odabco only as guest molecules located in the interlayer space. Layered compound 3 and three-dimensional 4 have cationic coordination frameworks with 26% and 34% specific void volumes, respectively, unveiling high structural diversity of Co(II)-odabco MOFs based on quite a rare aliphatic moiety. Magnetization measurements were performed for 1, 3, and 4 and the obtained data were interpreted on the basis of their crystal structures. A strong (J/kB~100 K) antiferromagnetic coupling was found within binuclear metal blocks in 1. Ion exchange experiments revealed a considerable iodide uptake by 3 resulting in an up to 75% guest nitrate substitution within the voids of a coordination framework, found by capillary zone electrophoresis data and confirmed by single-crystal XRD. A preservation of 3 crystallinity during the exchange allowed for the guest I− positions within a new adduct with the formula [Co2(H2O)(NO3)(odabco)5]I2(NO3)·1.85H2O (3-I) to be successfully determined and the odabco aliphatic core to be revealed as a main adsorption center for quite large and easily polarizable iodide anions. In summary, this work presents a comprehensive study for a series of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane N,N'-dioxide-based MOFs of cobalt(II) within the framework of magnetic properties and reports the first example of anion exchange in odabco-based coordination networks, supported by direct X-ray structural data. This study focuses on investigating and comparing the influence of the surface functional groups and chemical matrices of macroporous resin on the Cr(III) exchange mechanism. The results discussed herein indicate that sulfonic resin removed Cr(III) ions with faster kinetics than carboxylic resin. Equilibrium was established within 15 and 7 min for the carboxylic and sulfonic resins, respectively, with a 99.5% removal efficiency at 333 K. The Langmuir exchange capacity was observed to be higher for the sulfonic resin (1.5 mmol∙g−1) than the carboxylic resin (0.80 mmol∙g−1) at 333 K. The adsorption isotherms obtained for the carboxylic and sulfonic resins were H and S types, respectively, representing a higher affinity of the carboxylic resin for Cr(III) removal at a low metal ion concentration. Additionally, it was noted that the carboxylic resin preferentially co-sorbed H+ and Cr(OH)2+ ions below Cr(III) concentrations of 6–8 mmol.L−1. The H+ ions co-sorption was almost negligible, whereas the Cr(III) exchange was 87 and 34.5% for the carboxylic acid resin and sulfonic acid resins, respectively. The data of the concentration studies were evaluated using non-linear forms of Freundlich, Langmuir, and Dubinin–Radushkevich adsorption isotherm models, and the kinetic data were analyzed using pseudo-Ist- and pseudo-IIst-order kinetic models. The activation energy Ea for Amberlite IRC-50 (Na+) was greater (22.4 kJ∙mol−1) than that of Amberlyst-15 (Na+) 17 kJ∙mol−1, indicating a higher energy barrier for the ion exchange reaction on carboxylic resin. As per the findings of a statistical error analysis (RMSE and SSE) and absolute average relative distribution (AARD) statistical model, a close agreement between the experimental and theoretical values suggested that the Langmuir isotherm was well-fitted to the current adsorptive investigations. The interaction of the COO− and SO3− functional sites of the resins for the exchange of Cr(III) ions was validated through an FT-IR analysis. The macroporous resins used in the current study for Cr(III) exchange showed promising performances compared to other resins. Nitrate contamination of ground water is a serious problem due to the intensive agricultural activities needed to feed the world's growing population. While effective, drinking water treatment using commercial ion exchange polymers is often too expensive to be employed. At the same time, lignocellulosic waste from crop production—an abundant source of the renewable polymer cellulose—is often burned to clear fields. This results in not only adverse health outcomes, but also wastes a valuable resource. In this study, wheat straw was pretreated to extract cellulose, then selectively oxidized with periodate, crosslinked with an alkyl diamine (1,7-diaminoheptane or 1,10-diaminodecane), and functionalized with a quaternary ammonium compound ((2-aminoethyl)trimethyl ammonium chloride) to generate a cellulose-based anion exchange polymer. This polymer lowered aqueous nitrate concentrations to health-based drinking water standards. Unlike commercial ion exchange polymers, its synthesis did not require the use of toxic epichlorohydrin or flammable solvents. The pretreatment conditions did not significantly affect nitrate uptake, but the crosslinker chain length did, with polymers crosslinked with 1,10-diaminodecane showing no nitrate uptake. Agricultural-waste-based anion exchange polymers could accelerate progress toward the sustainable development goals by providing low-cost materials for nitrate removal from water. Recovery of metals from e-waste forms a major focus of circular economy thinking and aligns well with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). While hydrometallurgical extraction from electronic printed circuit boards (PCBs) is well established, the separation of metals from the leach liquors, which are complex mixtures, remains a challenge. To achieve selective separation, ion exchange resins with chelating functional groups were employed in the present study. Batch and column studies for selective recovery of Cu2+ from a given mixed metals leach solution were conducted using Dowex M4195 resin, and both the adsorption isotherm and kinetics were studied. The process involves three major steps: selective recovery of Cu2+ by M4195 at low pH and elution with H2SO4; sorption of Ni2+ from the raffinate by Dowex M4195 at pH 2 and removal of Fe3+ from raffinate. The batch experimental results showed appreciable and selective recovery of copper (51.1%) at pH 0.7 and 40.0% Ni2+ was sorbed from raffinate at pH 2.0 with co-adsorption of Fe3+ as impurity. The batch adsorption data could be fitted with both Langmuir and Freundlich isotherms and exhibited pseudo-second-order kinetics. Column studies agreed with the Yoon–Nelson model and indicated that Cu2+ break-through time in the column decreased with an increase in flowrate from 3.0 to 10.0 min/mL and decreased in sorption capacity, while it was delayed with increased bed heights from 20 to 30 mm. Complete elution of Ni2+ was obtained with 2.0 M H2SO4 after selective elution of trace impurities with dilute HCl. Resource recovery from wastewater is very important in view of a circular economy approach in the water field. Among the different technologies applied to realize circular economy, an attractive option is the use of nutrient-enriched media that can be utilized as slow-release fertilizers. Zeolites have been re-discovered for their key role in ammonium (NH4+) adsorption from treated wastewater. Although many studies have been carried out to assess the ability of zeolites to adsorb NH4+, only few papers concerning NH4+ desorption from zeolites are available in the literature. Therefore, this study investigated NH4+ desorption from mineralogically different zeolites, before (ZNS and ZNC) and after (ZSS and ZSC) their treatment with sodium chloride. The zeolites differed in mordenite content. The amount of the desorbed NH4+ varied from 78 to 84% of the total NH4+ adsorbed. In particular, the NaCl-treated materials showed the largest desorption (27.6 ± 0.2 mg L−1, and 27.9 ± 0.7 mg L−1, ZSS, and ZSC, respectively) as compared to the untreated zeolites (22.9 ± 0.3 mg L−1, and 24.2 ± 0.3 mg L−1, ZNS, and ZNC, respectively) because of the different affinity of the cations for the zeolite surface. A monomodal pseudo-first-order model best approximated the desorption kinetics, suggesting only one mechanism of NH4+ desorption from zeolites. Such a mechanism is based on the ion exchange between dissolved Na+ and adsorbed NH4+. The desorption kinetics also showed that NH4+ desorbed slower from the NaCl-treated zeolites than the untreated ones. This effect was explained by the different affinity of Na+ and NH4+ for the zeolite surfaces as due to the diverse sizes of the Na+ and NH4+ hydration spheres. By revealing the effect of zeolite mineralogy and surface treatments in the desorption of NH4+, this study can suggest new and effective synthetic strategies for the achievement of cheap new materials to be applied in environmental remediation within a circular economy perspective. Economic development and human life depend on groundwater resources in arid regions around the world. To define water quality in the Northwest Gulf of Suez, its elements, geogenic and anthropogenic sources, and suitability for various purposes, ten groundwater samples were collected and analyzed from wells tapping Quaternary and Tertiary aquifers. Average ion distribution was in the following order: Na+ > Mg2+ > Ca2+ > K+ and Cl− > SO42− > HCO3−. Two water types with hydrochemical Ca-Mg-Cl-SO4 facies accounted for 30% of samples due to reverse ion exchange, while Na-K-Cl-SO4 accounted for 70% of samples due to evaporation. Cd (0–0.042 mg/L) and Pb (0–0.222 mg/L) from industrial applications in the study area exceeded the acceptable values in drinking water (>0.003 and 0.01 mg/L, respectively). Heavy metals and ionic value enrichment are due to weathering, precipitation/evaporation, ion exchange, and anthropogenic activities. Most ions in groundwater are higher than the acceptable limits prescribed for drinking water at all sites. Most groundwater in the investigated area is inappropriate for irrigation based on total salinity and MH index. High-salinity-tolerant plants and vegetables can be utilized according to the USSLS diagram. All groundwater samples have improper effects of incrustation and corrosion. CeO2-TiO2 is an important mixed oxide due to its catalytic properties, particularly in heterogeneous photocatalysis. This study presents a straightforward method to obtain 1D TiO2 nanostructures decorated with CeO2 nanoparticles at the surface. As the precursor, we used H2Ti3O7 nanoribbons prepared from sodium titanate nanoribbons by ion exchange. Two cerium sources with an oxidation state of +3 and +4 were used to obtain mixed oxides. HAADF–STEM mapping of the Ce4+-modified nanoribbons revealed a thin continuous layer at the surface of the H2Ti3O7 nanoribbons, while Ce3+ cerium ions intercalated partially between the titanate layers. The phase composition and morphology changes were monitored during calcination between 620 °C and 960 °C. Thermal treatment led to the formation of CeO2 nanoparticles on the surface of the TiO2 nanoribbons, whose size increased with the calcination temperature. The use of Ce4+ raised the temperature required for converting H2Ti3O7 to TiO2-B by approximately 200 °C, and the temperature for the formation of anatase. For the Ce3+ batch, the presence of cerium inhibited the conversion to rutile. Analysis of cerium oxidation states revealed the existence of both +4 and +3 in all calcined samples, regardless of the initial cerium oxidation state. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The paper presents theoretical analyses and experimental investigations of broadband differential interference in planar gradient waveguides made via K+-Na+ ion exchange in BK-7 glass. This technology, due to its large polarimetric dispersion, is especially useful for applications in differential interferometry. We discuss the influence of technological parameters on the operation characteristics of the structure in terms of sensor applications. The refractive index variation in the measured external surroundings affects the modal properties of TE and TM modes and the spectral distribution at the output of the differential interferometer. Scandium, a valuable element with restricted production sources mainly situated in China and Russia, is typically obtained as a by-product during the production of various materials. As the demand for scandium grows in the expanding aluminum and fuel cell industries, and with significant investments in rare earth mining in the USA and Australia, there is a need to explore alternative recovery sources. This research investigates the recovery of scandium from an acid pregnant leaching solution using ion exchange resins. The pregnant leaching solution was obtained after the leaching of bauxite residue with sulfuric acid. Commercial resins with different functional groups were tested for their performance in scandium extraction. In addition, the co-adsorption of impurities, such as iron and titanium, was studied. The feed solution consisted of 12.7 mg/L Sc and main impurities of 272 mg/L Fe and 33.6 mg/L Ti and was pretreated before the ion exchange process by acidification with sulfuric acid and iron powder addition to suppress silica gel formation and minimize the Fe(III) content in the solution accordingly. Among the tested resins, a D2EHPA-impregnated resin had high selectivity for Sc towards Ti, while a monophosphonic resin was also a promising option since it had a higher capacity for Sc but co-extracted Ti. These findings offer promising opportunities for the recovery of scandium from acid leaching solutions and could contribute to addressing the growing demand for this valuable element. Facilitating the demands of modern society, namely, smartphones, televisions, electric vehicles, and high-stability aircraft structures, requires low-cost and high-performance materials and a corresponding change in the approach needed to design them. Rare earth elements (REEs) play a significant role in achieving these objectives by adding small amounts of these elements to alloys, thereby enhancing material properties. Despite being more abundant than precious metals, the 17 REEs exhibit subtle variations in their chemical and physical characteristics. Thus, their separation is still crucial for industrial applications. There is a corresponding need to develop more effective and efficient separation methods. Adding to the separation challenge is the complexity of the sources of REEs and related materials. Thus, large-scale production of REE materials is difficult. Current REE processing techniques can be categorized into pre-treatment, beneficiation, separation, and refining. Researchers have developed various technologies encompassing chemical, physical, and biological methods, focusing on economic and environmental considerations. However, not all these approaches can be scaled up for mass production. This article focuses on feasible strategies such as precipitation and crystallization, oxidation and reduction, ion exchange, adsorption, solvent extraction, and membrane separation. FAU-type zeolite NaX was successfully prepared using hydrothermal synthesis at 90 °C for 6 h. The Mn- and Cu-ion-exchanged NaX zeolites were obtained. After the ion exchange, the zeolite powders were thermally treated at 300 °C. As well as Ag-ion-exchanged zeolite, NaX and zeolite were impregnated with two types of Ag nanoparticle dispersions: citrate surface-stabilized (Cit@Ag NPs) and polymer-stabilized (PVP@Ag) nanoparticles. Silver nanoparticles were synthesized using the electrochemical reduction method. The changes in the phase and chemical composition and structure of the obtained zeolite powders before and after ion exchange or impregnation were investigated by PXRD analysis, FTIR spectroscopy, and XRF analysis. The results show that Mn, Cu-exchanged NaX, and that impregnated with Ag demonstrated catalytic abilities towards ozone decomposition in comparison with pure zeolite (non-catalytic activity). Lithium recovery is imperative to accommodate the increase in lithium demand. Salt lake brine contains a large amount of lithium and is one of the most important sources of lithium metal. In this study, Li2CO3, MnO2, and TiO2 particles were mixed, and the precursor of a manganese–titanium mixed ion sieve (M-T-LIS) was prepared by a high-temperature solid-phase method. M-T-LISs were obtained by DL-malic acid pickling. The adsorption experiment results noted single-layer chemical adsorption and maximum lithium adsorption of 32.32 mg/g. From the Brunauer–Emmett–Teller and scanning electron microscopy results, the M-T-LIS provided adsorption sites after DL-malic acid pickling. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared results showed the ion exchange mechanism of the M-T-LIS adsorption. From the results of the Li+ desorption experiment and recoverability experiment, DL-malic acid was used to desorb Li+ from the M-T-LIS with a desorption rate of more than 90%. During the fifth cycle, the Li+ adsorption capacity of the M-T-LIS was more than 20 mg/g (25.90 mg/g), and the recovery efficiency was higher than 80% (81.42%). According to the selectivity experiment, the M-T-LIS had good selectivity for Li+ (adsorption capacity of 25.85 mg/g in the artificial salt lake brine), which indicates its good application potential. Polypyrroles attract significant attention as the promising class of conductive polymers for the organic electronics, electrochemical energy-storage, photovoltaics, sensing and light-emitting devices due to their electrochemical and electrical properties. The attachment of the charged fragments to the pyrrole monomeric unit opens the route to a water-soluble polypyrrole for improved solution processability. Here we report a scalable multigram synthesis of the N-substituted cationic pyrrole, N,N,N-triethyl-4-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)butan-1-aminium perchlorate, which can be used for the preparation of the water-soluble cationic polypyrrole, in two steps with 81% overall yield. In terms of isotopic technologies, it is essential to be able to produce materials with an enriched isotopic abundance (i.e., a compound isotopic labelled with 2H, 13C, 6Li, 18O or 37Cl), which is one that differs from natural abundance. The isotopic-labelled compounds can be used to study different natural processes (like compounds labelled with 2H, 13C, or 18O), or they can be used to produce other isotopes as in the case of 6Li, which can be used to produce 3H, or to produce LiH that acts like a protection shield against fast neutrons. At the same time, 7Li isotope can be used as a pH controller in nuclear reactors. The COLEX process, which is currently the only technology available to produce 6Li at industrial scale, has environmental drawbacks due to generation of Hg waste and vapours. Therefore, there is a need for new eco-friendly technologies for separation of 6Li. The separation factor of 6Li/7Li with chemical extraction methods in two liquid phases using crown ethers is comparable to that of COLEX method, but has the disadvantages of low distribution coefficient of Li and the loss of crown ethers during the extraction. Electrochemical separation of lithium isotopes through the difference in migration rates between 6Li and 7Li is one of the green and promising alternatives for the separation of lithium isotopes, but this methodology requires complicated experimental setup and optimisation. Displacement chromatography methods like ion exchange in different experimental configurations have been also applied to enrich 6Li with promising results. Besides separation methods, there is also a need for development of new analysis methods (ICP-MS, MC-ICP-MS, TIMS) for reliable determination of Li isotope ratios upon enrichment. Considering all the above-mentioned facts, this paper will try to emphasize the current trends in separation techniques of lithium isotopes by exposing all the chemical separation and spectrometric analysis methods, and highlighting their advantages and disadvantages. The Quaternary aquifer in the western Nile Delta is threatened by seawater intrusion. Few studies have integrated diverse techniques for the assessment of seawater intrusion in this aquifer. The present study aims to determine the geochemical processes and impact of seawater intrusion on this aquifer. To accomplish this investigation, the integration of hydrogeochemical, statistical, multivariate statistical, and graphical tools were implemented on 75 groundwater samples and 5 soil samples. The physicochemical variables were analyzed using hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA), saturation index (SI), ionic ratios, ionic relationships, the seawater intrusion index (SWI) and the correlations among 16 hydrochemical parameters, to identify the influencing processes of groundwater quality in the study area. According to the statistical study, the groundwater is divided into four groups. Those are distributed, from north to south: Group1 (G1), Group2 (G2), Group4 (G4), and Group3 (G3). The samples of G1 and G2 are distinguished by Na–Cl chemical type. While G4 has two main ion associations, HCO3–Ca–Mg and Cl–SO4–Na, G3 is characterized by HCO3–Cl–SO4–Ca–Na type. The processes that affect the chemistry of the groundwater are the seawater intrusion, ion exchange, silicate and Ca-rich mineral weathering, and mineral deposition. G1 and G2 groups are primarily influenced by seawater incursion, evaporation, and the ion exchange mechanism. In addition, the weathering of silicate minerals has a substantial effect on G3 and G4 groups, resulting in the creation of carbonate minerals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This work investigates the applicability of clinoptilolite, a natural zeolite, as a low-cost adsorbent for removing chromium from aqueous solutions using fixed bed studies. To improve its removal performance for the inorganic pollutant, the adsorbent is pretreated with NaCl to prepare it in the homoionic form of Na+ before undertaking ion exchange with Cr3+ in aqueous solution. This work also evaluates if treated effluents could meet the required effluent discharge standard set by legislation for the target pollutant. To sustain its cost-effectiveness for wastewater treatment, the spent adsorbent is regenerated with NaOH. It was found that the clinoptilolite treated with NaCl has a two-times higher Cr adsorption capacity (4.5 mg/g) than the as-received clinoptilolite (2.2 mg/g). Pretreatment of the clinoptilolite with NaCl enabled it to treat more bed volume (BV) (64 BV) at a breakthrough point of 0.5 mg/L of Cr concentration and achieve a longer breakthrough time (1500 min) for the first run, as compared to as-received clinoptilolite (32 BV; 250 min). This suggests that pretreatment of clinoptilolite with NaCl rendered it in the homoionic form of Na+. Although pretreated clinoptilolite could treat the Cr wastewater at an initial concentration of 10 mg/L, its treated effluents were still unable to meet the required Cr limit of less than 0.05 mg/L set by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). The formation and properties of silver and iron nanoscale components in the Ag-Fe bimetallic system deposited on mordenite depend on several parameters during their preparation. Previously, it was shown that an important condition for optimizing nano-center properties in a bimetallic catalyst is to change the order of sequential deposition of components; the order "first Ag+, then Fe2+" was chosen as optimal. In this work, the influence of exact Ag/Fe atomic proportion on the system's physicochemical properties was studied. This ratio has been confirmed to affect the stoichiometry of the reduction–oxidation processes involving Ag+ and Fe2+, as shown by XRD, DR UV-Vis, XPS, and XAFS data, while HRTEM, SBET and TPD-NH3 show little change. However, it was found the correlation between the occurrence and amount of the Fe3+ ions incorporated into the zeolite's framework and the experimentally determined catalytic activities towards the model de-NOx reaction along the series of nanomaterials elucidated in this present paper. We present an enhanced method for synthesizing sheets of borophane. Despite the challenges associated with low efficiency, we discovered that incorporating hydrochloric acid into the ion-exchange reaction significantly improved the production yield from 20% to over 50%. After a thorough examination of the reaction, we gained insight into the underlying mechanisms and found that the use of hydrochloric acid provides two key benefits: accelerated production of borophene and isolation of high-purity products. Strontium, the main component of radioactive nuclear wastewater, is characterized by a high fission yield and an extended half-life. It is easily absorbed by the human body, thus greatly threatening the environment and the human body. In this study, a mesoporous composite phase sodium superionic conductor (NVP@NMP) was synthesized by the droplet template method, and the rapid capture of Sr2+ from wastewater was achieved by constructing a nano-heterogeneous interface to increase the ion diffusion rate. NVP@NMP showed efficient and rapid removal of strontium ions in adsorption kinetics, isothermal adsorption, solution pH, and interfering ions concentration tests, especially using the equilibrium time of 2 min for strontium absorption by NVP@NMP and a maximum theoretical adsorption capacity of 361.36 mg/g. The adsorption process was spontaneous, endothermic, and feasible. At higher concentrations of other competing ions (Na, K, Ca, Mg, and Cs), the adsorbent exhibited higher selectivity towards Sr2+.TEM, XPS, and XRD analyses revealed that ion exchange was the main mechanism for the NVP@NMP ultrafast adsorption of Sr2+. In this research, we investigated the feasibility of ultrafast strontium capture by sodium superionic conductor structured phosphates and explained the ultrafast strontium adsorption mechanism of NASICON materials through XPS. We have developed 12-membered silica-tetrahedra-ringed Na5YSi4O12-type sodium ion conducting glass-ceramics on the basis of the composition Na3+3x-yR1-xPySi3-yO9 (R: rare earth elements; denoted as Narpsio); especially, the material of Na4Y0.6P0.2Si2.8O9 with the combined parameters of (x, y) = (0.4, 0.2) gives rise to the maximum conductivity of 1 × 10−1 Scm−1 at 300 °C. Because glass-ceramics generally have the advantage of structural rigidity and chemical durability over sintered polycrystalline ceramics, the present study employed glass-ceramic Narpsio to perform chemically driven ion exchange of Na+ with protonated water molecules with an aim to produce a proton conductor. The ion exchange was carried out in a hydrochloric acid solution by changing immersion time, temperature, and acid concentration. The ion exchanged Na4Y0.6P0.2Si2.8O9-based glass-ceramics were analyzed by the complex impedance method, and the proton conductivity was found to exhibit 3 × 10−4 Scm−1 at 300 °C with the activation energy of 59 kJ/mol. The dependence of humidity-sensitive conductivity of the ion exchanged bulk glass-ceramics was also examined; the conductivity increased almost linearly from 0.6 × 10−4 Scm−1 in dry air to 1.5 × 10−4 Scm−1 in 75% humid ambience at 300 °C.
