This paper focuses on the acceptance of ADASs in the traffic safety and human factor domain. More specifically, it examines the predictive validity of the Unified Model of Driver Acceptance (UMDA) for an ADAS bundle that includes forward collision warning, headway monitoring and warning, and lane-keeping assistance in Belgium and Vietnam, two substantially different geographical, socio-cultural, and macroeconomic settings. All systems in the studied ADAS bundle are located at the Society of Automotive Engineer (SAE)-level 0 of automation. We found moderate acceptance towards such an ADAS bundle in both countries, and respondents held rather positive opinions about system-specific characteristics. In terms of predictive validity, the UMDA scored quite well in both countries, though better in Belgium than in Vietnam. Macroeconomic factors and socio-cultural characteristics could explain these differences between the two countries. Policymakers are encouraged to prioritise initiatives that stimulate the purchase and use of the ADAS, rather than on measures meant to influence the underlying decisional balance. Deploying and effectively utilizing wireless sensor networks (WSNs) in underwater habitats remains a challenging task. In underwater wireless sensors networks (UWSNs), the availability of a continuous energy source for communicating with nodes is either very costly or is prohibited due to the marine life law enforcement agencies. So, in order to address this issue, we present a Q-learning-based approach to designing an energy-efficient medium access control (MAC) protocol for UWSNs through collision avoidance. The main goal is to prolong the network's lifespan by optimizing the communication methods, specifically focusing on improving the energy efficiency of the MAC protocols. Factors affecting the energy consumption in communication are adjustments to the interference ranges, i.e., changing frequencies repeatedly to obtain optimal communication; data packet retransmissions in case of a false acknowledgment; and data packet collision occurrences in the channel. Our chosen protocol stands out by enabling sensor (Rx) nodes to avoid collisions without needing extra communication or prior interference knowledge. According to the results obtained through simulations, our protocol may increase the network's performance in terms of network throughput by up to 23% when compared to benchmark protocols depending on the typical traffic load. It simultaneously decreases end-to-end latency, increases the packet delivery ratio (PDR), boosts channel usage, and lessens packet collisions by over 38%. Background: Recent studies have associated total neoadjuvant therapy (TNT) with better treatment adherence, decreased toxicity, improved complete clinical response and anal sphincter preservation rates in patients with locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC). However, real-world experience with TNT in the management of LARC remains limited. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety outcomes of TNT for LARC in Western Australia. Methods: Patients with LARC (cT2-4 and/or cN1-2) who underwent induction chemotherapy followed by neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy or neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy followed by consolidation chemotherapy, followed by surgery were recruited from two hospitals in Western Australia. Efficacy outcomes assessed included clinical response (complete, partial, no response), and pathologic complete response (pCR) rate, R0 resection rate, and R1 resection rate were evaluated. Those patients who achieved clinical complete response following TNT were given the option of active surveillance. The safety and tolerability of TNT were assessed. Results: 32 patients with LARC were treated with TNT. In total, 17 patients (53%) received chemoradiotherapy followed by consolidation chemotherapy and 15 patients (47%) received induction chemotherapy followed by chemoradiotherapy. Nine (28%) of the patients with LARC treated with TNT had a complete clinical response, twenty-one (66%) patients had a partial clinical response, and two (6%) patients had no response to TNT. Of the 32 patients, 27 (84%) underwent surgery. There was a 100% R0 resection rate. The pCR rate was 15%. pCR, clinical response, and the R0 resection rate were similar between the two TNT regimens. TNT was well tolerated, with the majority of patients (88%) completing the chemotherapy course with grade 1 and 2 adverse effects. Conclusions: In conclusion, TNT emerges as a promising approach for the management of LARC. However, further research is warranted to refine the optimal TNT protocols, determine its long-term outcomes, and identify patient populations who would benefit the most from this innovative therapeutic strategy. This research utilises statistical modelling to explore the impact of roadway infrastructure elements, primarily those related to cross-section design, on crash occurrences in urban areas. Cross-section design is an important step in the roadway geometric design process as it influences key operational characteristics like capacity, cost, safety, and overall functionality of the transport system entity. Evaluating the influence of cross-section design on these factors is relatively straightforward, except for its impact on safety, especially in urban areas. The safety aspect has resulted in inconsistent findings in the existing literature, indicating a need for further investigation. Negative binomial (NB) models are typically employed for such investigations, given their ability to account for over-dispersion in crash data. However, the low sample mean and under-dispersion occasionally exhibited by crash data can restrict their applicability. The generalised Poisson (GP) models have been proposed as a potential alternative to NB models. This research applies GP models for developing crash prediction models for urban road segments. Simultaneously, NB models are also developed to enable a comparative assessment between the two modelling frameworks. A six-year dataset encompassing crash counts, traffic volume, and cross-section design data reveals a significant association between crash frequency and infrastructure design variables. Specifically, lane width, number of lanes, road separation, on-street parking, and posted speed limit are significant predictors of crash frequencies. Comparative analysis with NB models shows that GP models outperform in cases of low sample mean crash types and yield similar results for others. Overall, this study provides valuable insights into the relationship between road infrastructure design and crash frequency in urban environments and offers a statistical approach for predicting crash frequency that maintains a balance between interpretability and predictive power, making it more viable for practitioners and road authorities to apply in real-world road safety scenarios. The empirical Bayes (EB) method is widely acclaimed for crash hotspot identification (HSID), which integrates crash prediction model estimates and observed crash frequency to compute the expected crash frequency of a site. The traditional negative binomial (NB) models, often used to estimate crash predictive models, typically struggle with accounting for the unobserved heterogeneity in crash data. Complex extensions of the NB models are applied to overcome these shortcomings. These techniques also present new challenges, for instance, applying the EB procedures, especially for out-of-sample data. This study applies a random parameter negative binomial (RPNB) model within the EB framework for HSID using out-of-sample data, comparing its performance with a varying dispersion parameter NB model (VDPNB). The research also evaluates the potential for safety improvement (PSI) scores for both models and compares them with EB estimates using three generalised criteria: high crashes consistency test (HCCT), common sites consistency test (CSCT), and absolute rank differences test (ARDT). The results yield dual insights. Firstly, the study highlights associations between crash covariates and frequency, emphasising the significance of roadway geometric design characteristics (e.g., lane width, number of lanes, and parking type) and traffic volume. Some variables also influenced overdispersion parameters in the VDPNB model. In the RPNB model, annual average daily traffic (AADT) and lane width emerged as random parameters. Secondly, the HSID performance assessment revealed the superiority of the EB method over PSI. Notably, the RPNB model, compared to the VDPNB, demonstrates superior performance in EB estimates for HSID with out-of-sample data. The i-DREAMS project established a 'Safety Tolerance Zone (STZ)' to maintain operators within safe boundaries through real-time and post-trip interventions, based on the crucial role of the human element in driving behavior. This paper aims to model the inter-relationship among driving task complexity, operator and vehicle coping capacity, and crash risk. Towards that aim, data from 80 drivers, who participated in a naturalistic driving experiment carried out in three countries (i.e., Belgium, Germany, and Portugal), resulting in a dataset of approximately 19,000 trips were collected and analyzed. The exploratory analysis included the development of Generalized Linear Models (GLMs) and the choice of the most appropriate variables associated with the latent variables "task complexity" and "coping capacity" that are to be estimated from the various indicators. In addition, Structural Equation Models (SEMs) were used to explore how the model variables were interrelated, allowing for both direct and indirect relationships to be modeled. Comparisons on the performance of such models, as well as a discussion on behaviors and driving patterns across different countries and transport modes, were also provided. The findings revealed a positive relationship between task complexity and coping capacity, indicating that as the difficulty of the driving task increased, the driver's coping capacity increased accordingly, (i.e., higher ability to manage and adapt to the challenges posed by more complex tasks). The integrated treatment of task complexity, coping capacity, and risk can improve the behavior and safety of all travelers, through the unobtrusive and seamless monitoring of behavior. In this paper, a model based on constraint convex optimization is proposed for the radiation pattern synthesis in cylindrical and spherical microstrip conformal array antennas. The optimization algorithm is modeled to decrease the Euclidean distance between the obtained radiation pattern of the deformed array and the desired radiation pattern of the planar array by calculating the suitable amplitude and phase values for the individual array patches. Four prototypes of 2 × 2 , 3 × 3 , 4 × 4 , and 5 × 5 microstrip patch array antenna are used as the radiating elements which are deformed from planar arrangement and placed on the faces of prescribed spherical and cylindrical shapes with various radii of curvatures. The results reveal that the performance of optimization algorithm performs better in 5 × 5 array, followed by 4 × 4 array, 3 × 3 array, and 2 × 2 array. However, 5 × 5 array provides more degrees of freedom for tuning the radiation pattern in desired form. The 5 × 5 array computes suitable amplitude and phase values for the radiating elements of the array, which restore the radiation pattern in terms of mainlobe reconstruction, null locations, sidelobe levels, up to the deformation of 20   cm in both spherical and cylindrical configurations of conformal array. The proposed optimization technique when applied to conformal antenna array offers fast computational speed and good convergence accuracy for radiation pattern synthesis, which can be useful for various engineering applications. Simple Summary: The research aimed to address the challenges in the early diagnosis of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC), a critical concern given its high fatality rate and global prevalence. Through the development of hybrid methodologies, the study sought to improve early diagnosis, reduce the burden on pathologists, and enhance the accuracy of OSCC diagnosis. By employing transfer learning, a combination of CNN and SVMs, and a fusion of deep and texture-based features, the research achieved a significant overall accuracy of 97.00%, effectively addressing the critical problem of timely and accurate OSCC diagnosis. Oral cancer is a fatal disease and ranks seventh among the most common cancers throughout the whole globe. Oral cancer is a type of cancer that usually affects the head and neck. The current gold standard for diagnosis is histopathological investigation, however, the conventional approach is time-consuming and requires professional interpretation. Therefore, early diagnosis of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma (OSCC) is crucial for successful therapy, reducing the risk of mortality and morbidity, while improving the patient's chances of survival. Thus, we employed several artificial intelligence techniques to aid clinicians or physicians, thereby significantly reducing the workload of pathologists. This study aimed to develop hybrid methodologies based on fused features to generate better results for early diagnosis of OSCC. This study employed three different strategies, each using five distinct models. The first strategy is transfer learning using the Xception, Inceptionv3, InceptionResNetV2, NASNetLarge, and DenseNet201 models. The second strategy involves using a pre-trained art of CNN for feature extraction coupled with a Support Vector Machine (SVM) for classification. In particular, features were extracted using various pre-trained models, namely Xception, Inceptionv3, InceptionResNetV2, NASNetLarge, and DenseNet201, and were subsequently applied to the SVM algorithm to evaluate the classification accuracy. The final strategy employs a cutting-edge hybrid feature fusion technique, utilizing an art-of-CNN model to extract the deep features of the aforementioned models. These deep features underwent dimensionality reduction through principal component analysis (PCA). Subsequently, low-dimensionality features are combined with shape, color, and texture features extracted using a gray-level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), Histogram of Oriented Gradient (HOG), and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) methods. Hybrid feature fusion was incorporated into the SVM to enhance the classification performance. The proposed system achieved promising results for rapid diagnosis of OSCC using histological images. The accuracy, precision, sensitivity, specificity, F-1 score, and area under the curve (AUC) of the support vector machine (SVM) algorithm based on the hybrid feature fusion of DenseNet201 with GLCM, HOG, and LBP features were 97.00%, 96.77%, 90.90%, 98.92%, 93.74%, and 96.80%, respectively. A thorough life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted to determine whether wood pellets were a viable substitute for non-renewable fuels like oil and gas, especially for heating. To evaluate the properties of wood pellets and their effects on the environment, the study was conducted in the Hazara division of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan. A few factors were investigated, including the carbon and water footprints and the identification of potential growth opportunities in the production of wood pellets. One kilogram of wood pellets served as the analysis reference unit. Raw materials were obtained from sawmills and furniture stores to make the wood pellets. Sawdust, a bio binder, and lubricating oil were used in the production process along with the pelletizer machine. SimaPro 9.2 software was used in the environmental footprint assessment to evaluate several environmental effects, including eutrophication, ozone depletion, abiotic depletion, rusting, human toxicity, and aquatic ecotoxicity. The highest contribution was shown by the wood pellets produced from the softwood sawdust as 149.8558 in marine aquatic ecotoxicity. The study's findings showed that using lubricating oil during the production of wood pellets significantly affected the overall environmental results. The characterization of wood pellets showed that the Higher heating Values (HHV) resulted from burning wood pellets made from sawdust of Melia azedarach as 24.79 MJ/kg. Softwood mixed species recorded the highest water footprint and damage assessment impact and the highest carbon footprint of 0.186 CO2 e. With a 3.84 × 10−7 DALY (disability-adjusted life years) measurement, softwood mixed species showed the highest contribution to human health damage among the damage categories. In terms of cost, producing one kilogram of wood pellets from softwood mixed species was priced at 22 PKR, the lowest among the assessed species. Research on the relationship between Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and environmental concerns has been drastically growing, providing opportunities to conduct systematic and bibliometric overviews. Surprisingly, to date, there has been no bibliometric study on the relationship to analyze the large volume of data. To fill the gap, we conducted a bibliometric study to address the statistical evaluation of the published studies and measure the role of the publications in the scientific community. We utilized the Scopus data from 2000–2021 and applied VOSviewer for co-citation and bibliographic coupling and SciMAT for conceptual structure and evaluation. In addition to the most influential authors, journals, and countries, we have discussed theoretical foundations and current research streams in the field of FDI and environmental concerns. We have discussed how research streams in the fields of FDI and environment transformed during 2000–2005, 2006–2010, 2011–2015, and 2016–2021. Concerning future research directions, we strongly recommend studying public policies and government incentives for environmental concerns. Fish skin mucus is a dynamic barrier for invading pathogens with a variety of anti-microbial enzymes, including cyclophilin A (CypA), a multi-functional protein with peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerase (PPIase) activity. Beside various other immunological functions, CypA induces leucocytes migration in vitro in teleost. In the current study, we have discovered several novel immune-relevant proteins in yellow catfish skin mucus by mass spectrometry (MS). The CypA present among them was further detected by Western blot. Moreover, the CypA present in the skin mucus displayed strong chemotactic activity for yellow catfish leucocytes. Interestingly, asparagine (like arginine in mammals) at position 69 was the critical site in yellow catfish CypA involved in leucocyte attraction. These novel efforts do not only highlight the enzymatic texture of skin mucus, but signify CypA to be targeted for anti-inflammatory therapeutics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) play important roles in mediating multiple biological processes in eukaryotes and are being increasingly studied to evaluate their roles associated with cellular changes following viral infection. Snakehead fish Vesiculovirus (SHVV) has caused mass mortality in snakehead fish during the past few years. To identify specific miRNAs involved in SHVV infection, we performed microRNA deep sequencing on a snakehead fish cell line (SSN-1) with or without SHVV infection. A total of 205 known miRNAs were identified when they were aligned with the known zebrafish miRNAs, and nine novel miRNAs were identified using MiRDeep2 software. Eighteen and 143 of the 205 known miRNAs were differentially expressed at three and 24 h post-infection (poi), respectively. From the differentially-expressed miRNAs, five were randomly selected to validate their expression profiles using quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR), and their expression profiles were consistent with the microRNA sequencing results. In addition, the target gene prediction of the SHVV genome was performed for the differentially-expressed host miRNAs, and a total of 10 and 58 differentially-expressed miRNAs were predicted to bind to the SHVV genome at three and 24 h poi, respectively. The effects of three selected miRNAs (miR-130-5p, miR-214 and miR-216b) on SHVV multiplication were evaluated using their mimics and inhibitors via qRT-PCR and Western blotting. The results showed that all three miRNAs were able to inhibit the multiplication of SHVV; whereas the mechanisms underlying the SHVV multiplication inhibited by the specific miRNAs need to be further characterized in the future. Flood monitoring was conducted using multi-sensor data from space-borne optical, and microwave sensors; with cross-validation by ground-based rain gauges and stream flow stations along the Indus River; Pakistan. First; the optical imagery from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) was processed to delineate the extent of the 2010 flood along Indus River; Pakistan. Moreover; the all-weather all-time capability of higher resolution imagery from the Advanced Synthetic Aperture Radar (ASAR) is used to monitor flooding in the lower Indus river basin. Then a proxy for river discharge from the Advanced Microwave Scanning Radiometer (AMSR-E) aboard NASA's Aqua satellite and rainfall estimates from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) are used to study stream flow time series and precipitation patterns. The AMSR-E detected water surface signal was cross-validated with ground-based river discharge observations at multiple stream flow stations along the main Indus River. A high correlation was found; as indicated by a Pearson correlation coefficient of above 0.8 for the discharge gauge stations located in the southwest of Indus River basin. It is concluded that remote-sensing data integrated from multi spectral and microwave sensors could be used to supplement stream gauges in sparsely gauged large basins to monitor and detect floods. Levee breaches are some of the most common hazards in the world and cause the loss of lives, livelihoods, and property destruction. During the 2010 flood in Pakistan, the most devastating breach occurred at Tori Levee on the right bank of the Indus River, downstream of the Guddu Barrage, which caused residual floods in northern Sindh and the adjoining regions of the Balochistan province. In this study, 2D unsteady flow modeling performed for Tori Levee breach computed residual flood inundation by coupling a HEC-RAS (Hydrological Engineering Centre—River Analysis System) 2D hydraulic model with remote sensing and Geographic Information System techniques. The model performance was judged by comparing the observed and simulated water levels (stage) during peak flow at seven different gauging stations located within the Indus River reach and daily flood extents and multi-day composites. The quantitative values for the calibration and validation of the HEC-RAS model showed good performance with a range of difference from 0.13 to −0.54 m between the simulated and observed water levels (stage), 84% match for the maximum flood inundation area, and 73.2% for the measure of fit. The overall averages of these values for the daily flood comparison were 57.12 and 75%, respectively. Furthermore, the simulated maximum flow passed through the Tori Levee breach, which was found to be 4994.47 cumecs (about 15% of peak flow) with a head water stage of 71.56 m. By using the simulated flows through the Tori Levee breach, the flood risk maps for the 2010 flood identified hazard zones according to the flood characteristics (depth, velocity, depth times velocity, arrival time, and duration). Simple Summary: Circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) has been shown to be an informative biomarker in melanoma. Here we analysed plasma ctDNA in a real-world metastatic melanoma cohort. We found the kinetics of ctDNA decline are delayed in patients treated with immunotherapy compared to those receiving MAPK inhibitors. Nonetheless, decreasing ctDNA levels within 12 weeks of immunotherapy or BRAF/MEK inhibitors was strongly concordant with treatment response and significantly associated with longer progression-free survival (PFS). Furthermore, exploratory analysis of nine patients commencing anti-PD-1 therapy showed a trend of high tumour mutational burden and neoepitope load in responders compared to non-responders. The results support the use of ctDNA as a dynamic biomarker for assessment of response in melanoma patients. In this study, we evaluated the predictive value of circulating tumour DNA (ctDNA) to inform therapeutic outcomes in metastatic melanoma patients receiving systemic therapies. We analysed 142 plasma samples from metastatic melanoma patients prior to commencement of systemic therapy: 70 were treated with BRAF/MEK inhibitors and 72 with immunotherapies. Patient-specific droplet digital polymerase chain reaction assays were designed for ctDNA detection. Plasma ctDNA was detected in 56% of patients prior to first-line anti-PD1 and/or anti-CTLA-4 treatment. The detection rate in the immunotherapy cohort was comparably lower than those with BRAF inhibitors (76%, p = 0.0149). Decreasing ctDNA levels within 12 weeks of treatment was strongly concordant with treatment response (Cohen's k = 0.798, p < 0.001) and predictive of longer progression free survival. Notably, a slower kinetic of ctDNA decline was observed in patients treated with immunotherapy compared to those on BRAF/MEK inhibitors. Whole exome sequencing of ctDNA was also conducted in 9 patients commencing anti-PD-1 therapy to derive tumour mutational burden (TMB) and neoepitope load measurements. The results showed a trend of high TMB and neoepitope load in responders compared to non-responders. Overall, our data suggest that changes in ctDNA can serve as an early indicator of outcomes in metastatic melanoma patients treated with systemic therapies and therefore may serve as a tool to guide treatment decisions. Intricate formulation methods and/or the use of sophisticated equipment limit the prevalence of liposomal dosage-forms. Simple techniques are developed to assemble amphiphiles into globular lamellae while transiting from the immiscible organic to the aqueous phase. Various parameters are optimized by injecting chloroform solution of amphiphiles into the aqueous phase and subsequent removal of the organic phase. Further simplification is achieved by reorienting amphiphiles through a spontaneous phase transition in a swirling biphasic system during evaporation of the organic phase under vacuum. Although the chloroform injection yields smaller Z-average and poly-dispersity-index the spontaneous phase transition method overrides simplicity and productivity. The increasing solid/solvent ratios results in higher Z-average and broader poly-dispersity-index of liposomes under a given set of experimental conditions, and vice versa. Surface charge dependent large unilamellar vesicles with a narrow distribution have poly-dispersity-index < 0.4 in 10 μM saline. As small and monodisperse liposomes are prerequisites in targeted drug delivery strategies, hence the desired Z-average < 200 d.nm and poly-dispersity-index < 0.15 is obtained through the serial membrane-filtration method. Phosphatidylcholine/water 4 μmol/mL is achieved at a temperature of 10°C below the phase-transition temperature of phospholipids, ensuring suitability for thermolabile entities and high entrapment efficiency. Both methods furnish the de-novo rearrangement of amphiphiles into globular lamellae, aiding in the larger entrapped volume. The immiscible organic phase benefits from its faster and complete removal from the final product. High cholesterol content (55.6 mol%) imparts stability in primary hydration medium at 5 ± 3 °C for 6 months in light-protected type-1 glass vials. In this paper, a new design method is proposed for a planar and compact dual-band dipole antenna. The dipole antenna has arms as a hybrid CRLH (Composite right- and left-handed) transmission-line comprising distributed and lumped elements for the dual-band function. The two arms are fed by the outputs of a compact and printed CRLH dual-band balun which consists of a CRLH hybrid coupler and an additional CRLH phase-shifter. Its operational frequencies are 2.4 and 5.2 GHz as popular mobile applications. Verifying the method, the circuit approach, EM (Electromagnetics) simulation and measurement are conducted and their results turn out to agree well with each other. This paper presents a novel combo-reconfigurable architecture for the frequency and radiation patterning of a novel antenna system for future fifth-generation (5G) millimeter-wave mobile communication. The tuning system independently controls the frequency and radiation pattern shifts, without letting them affect each other. The proposed antenna consists of two patches, radiating at 28 GHz and 38 GHz. A negative-channel metal–oxide–semiconductor (NMOS) transistor was used as a switch for ON/OFF states. Frequency reconfiguration was controlled by switches SD1 and SD2, while pattern reconfigurability was achieved by SD3–SD18. The desired resonant frequencies of 28 GHz and 38 GHz were achieved by varying patch dimensions through the ON and OFF states of the SD1 and SD2 switches. Similarly, parasitic stubs on the ground are used to control surface currents, which results in pattern reconfiguration. The results were analyzed for 18 different combinations of the switch states. Adding/removing parasitic stubs and switches changed the beam steering angle (by 45° shift) from 0° to 180°, which modified the stub dimensions and changed the beam-width of the main lobe. Plasmonic antennas are attractive optical components of the optoelectronic devices, operating in the far-infrared regime for sensing and imaging applications. However, low optical absorption hinders its potential applications, and their performance is limited due to fixed resonance frequency. In this article, a novel gate tunable graphene-metal hybrid plasmonic antenna with stacking configuration is proposed and investigated to achieve tunable performance over a broad range of frequencies with enhanced absorption characteristics. The hybrid graphene-metal antenna geometry is built up with a hexagon radiator that is supported by the Al2O3 insulator layer and graphene reflector. This stacked structure is deposited in the high resistive Si wafer substrate, and the hexagon radiator itself is a sandwich structure, which is composed of gold hexagon structure and two multilayer graphene stacks. The proposed antenna characteristics i.e., tunability of frequency, the efficiency corresponding to characteristics modes, and the tuning of absorption spectra, are evaluated by full-wave numerical simulations. Besides, the unity absorption peak that was realized through the proposed geometry is sensitive to the incident angle of TM-polarized incidence waves, which can flexibly shift the maxima of the absorption peak from 30 THz to 34 THz. Finally, an equivalent resonant circuit model for the investigated antenna based on the simulations results is designed to validate the antenna performance. Parametric analysis of the proposed antenna is carried out through altering the geometric parameters and graphene parameters in the Computer Simulation Technology (CST) studio. This clearly shows that the proposed antenna has a resonance frequency at 33 THz when the graphene sheet Fermi energy is increased to 0.3 eV by applying electrostatic gate voltage. The good agreement of the simulation and equivalent circuit model results makes the graphene-metal antenna suitable for the realization of far-infrared sensing and imaging device containing graphene antenna with enhanced performance. Implants are widely used in the human body for the replacement of affected bones. Fatigue failure is one of the serious concerns for implants. Therefore, understanding of the underlying mechanism leading to fatigue failure is important for the longevity of biomaterial implants. In this paper, the fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth of titanium alloy biomaterial Ti-27Nb has been experimentally investigated. The Ti-27Nb material is tested for fatigue crack growth in different environmental conditions representing the ambient and in vitro environments for 504 hours and 816 hours, respectively. Fractography of the tested specimen is conducted using Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). The results of the fatigue crack growth propagation of the ambient and in vitro samples are similar in the Paris crack growth region. However, in the threshold region, the crack growth rate is higher for the Simulated Body Fluid (SBF) treated specimen. The fracture surface morphology of in vitro samples shows brittle fracture as compared to ambient specimens with significant plasticity and striations marks. It is proposed that a similar investigation may be conducted with specimens treated in SBF for prolonged periods to further ascertain the findings of this study. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, a new small antenna is suggested for 5G Sub-6-GHz band mobile communication. It can change the channel among the three given bands (called the 3.5-GHz area), as a wide-band antenna is connected to a small multiplexer comprising three metamaterial channel filters. The function of channel selection of this antenna system is experimentally demonstrated to prove the validity of the presented scheme. The channel selection for 5G mobile communication is conducted from f1 (channel 1) through f2 (channel 2) to f3 (channel 3), when TX and RX antennas with gains over 0 dBi and S11 less than −10 dB are located far-field apart (RFar ≫ 2.1 cm), and result in the transmission coefficient (S21) being the greatest at the selected channel, which is detected by a vector network analyzer. This paper proposes a compact, semi-circular shaped multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antenna design with high isolation and enhanced bandwidth for ultrawide band (UWB) applications. A decoupling stub is used for high isolation reaching up to −55 dB over the entire bandwidth. The proposed antenna is used for UWB as well as super wide band (SWB) applications. The overall size of the proposed antenna is 18 × 36 × 1.6   mm3. The | S 11 |   and voltage standing wave ratio (VSWR) of the proposed antenna are less than −10 dB and 2, respectively, in the range of 3–40 GHz. The total impedance bandwidth of the proposed design is 37 GHz. The VSWR, | S 11 | , | S 22 | , | S 21 | , | S 12 | , gain, envelope correlation coefficient (ECC), radiation pattern, and various other characteristic parameters are discussed in detail. Exceptional advancement has been made in the development of graphene optical nanoantennas. They are incorporated with optoelectronic devices for plasmonics application and have been an active research area across the globe. The interest in graphene plasmonic devices is driven by the different applications they have empowered, such as ultrafast nanodevices, photodetection, energy harvesting, biosensing, biomedical imaging and high-speed terahertz communications. In this article, the aim is to provide a detailed review of the essential explanation behind graphene nanoantennas experimental proofs for the developments of graphene-based plasmonics antennas, achieving enhanced light–matter interaction by exploiting graphene material conductivity and optical properties. First, the fundamental graphene nanoantennas and their tunable resonant behavior over THz frequencies are summarized. Furthermore, incorporating graphene–metal hybrid antennas with optoelectronic devices can prompt the acknowledgment of multi-platforms for photonics. More interestingly, various technical methods are critically studied for frequency tuning and active modulation of optical characteristics, through in situ modulations by applying an external electric field. Second, the various methods for radiation beam scanning and beam reconfigurability are discussed through reflectarray and leaky-wave graphene antennas. In particular, numerous graphene antenna photodetectors and graphene rectennas for energy harvesting are studied by giving a critical evaluation of antenna performances, enhanced photodetection, energy conversion efficiency and the significant problems that remain to be addressed. An intrabody nanonetwork (IBNN) is composed of nanoscale (NS) devices, implanted inside the human body for collecting diverse physiological information for diagnostic and treatment purposes. The unique constraints of these NS devices in terms of energy, storage and computational resources are the primary challenges in the effective designing of routing protocols in IBNNs. Our proposed work explicitly considers these limitations and introduces a novel energy-efficient routing scheme based on a fuzzy logic and bio-inspired firefly algorithm. Our proposed fuzzy logic-based correlation region selection and bio-inspired firefly algorithm based nano biosensors (NBSs) nomination jointly contribute to energy conservation by minimizing transmission of correlated spatial data. Our proposed fuzzy logic-based correlation region selection mechanism aims at selecting those correlated regions for data aggregation that are enriched in terms of energy and detected information. While, for the selection of NBSs, we proposed a new bio-inspired firefly algorithm fitness function. The fitness function considers the transmission history and residual energy of NBSs to avoid exhaustion of NBSs in transmitting invaluable information. We conduct extensive simulations using the Nano-SIM tool to validate the in-depth impact of our proposed scheme in saving energy resources, reducing end-to-end delay and improving packet delivery ratio. The detailed comparison of our proposed scheme with different scenarios and flooding scheme confirms the significance of the optimized selection of correlated regions and NBSs in improving network lifetime and packet delivery ratio while reducing the average end-to-end delay. The biochemical composition, secondary metabolites (phenolic compounds, flavonoids) and antimicrobial potential of different varieties of Emirati date (Phoenix dactylifera L.) pits were investigated. Total phenolic acids (TPC) and total flavonoid contents (TFC) of the different date pits were measured using a Folin–Ciocalteau reagent. Different organic solvents [(n-hexane; H2O: EtOH (1:1); ethyl acetate; acetone: Water (1:1); and methanol: Chloroform (1:1)] were compared to evaluate the phytotoxicity of Ajwa, Fard, Khalas, Khodari, Abu Maan, Lulu, and Mabroom date pits. The antimicrobial activity of the date pit extracts were evaluated by means of agar-well diffusion assay on Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 29123), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and Candida albicans (ATCC 66027). Minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) were measured following clinical laboratory standardization institute (CLSI) protocol. The biochemical analyses of date pits indicate that TPC were ranged from 7.80 mg of equivalent gallic acid⁄100 g dry weight in Ajwa to 4.65 mg in Mabroom. The TFC were ranged between 1.6–4.54 mg of equivalent catechin⁄100 g dry weight. Ajwa pit extract showed good quality traits (higher protein, lower ash content, and intermediate dietary fiber). The results indicate that the ethyl acetate extract of Khalas and Khodari inhibited S. aureus with an inhibition zone diameter of 20 mm and MIC of 10 mg/mL. Abu Mann pit extract inhibited the S. aureus and also decreased the population of E. coli. The diameter of inhibition zone was 15, 16, and 18 mm after treatment with Ajwa extracts, while the MICs were 7.5 and 5 mg/mL. The MeOH: CFM extract of Abu Mann and Ajwa was more potent against E. coli bacteria than any other extract. This work demonstrates that the Emirati date pits extract has antimicrobial (antibacterial, antifungal) potential and can be used as phytotoxic natural compounds. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Obesity is a major risk for diabetes. Brown adipose tissue (BAT) mediates production of heat while white adipose tissue (WAT) function in the storage of fat. Roles of BAT in the treatment of obesity and related disorders warrants more investigation. Peroxisome proliferator activator receptor gamma (PPAR-γ) is the master regulator of both BAT and WAT adipogenesis and has roles in glucose and fatty acid metabolism. Adipose tissue is the major expression site for PPAR-γ. In this study, the effects of rosiglitazone on the brown adipogenesis and the association of MAPK and PI3K pathways was investigated during the in vitro adipogenic differentiation of telomerase transformed mesenchymal stromal cells (iMSCs). Our data indicate that 2 µM rosiglitazone enhanced adipogenesis by over-expression of PPAR-γ and C/EBP-α. More specifically, brown adipogenesis was enhanced by the upregulation of EBF2 and UCP-1 and evidenced by multilocular fatty droplets morphology of the differentiated adipocytes. We also found that rosiglitazone significantly activated MAPK and PI3K pathways at the maturation stage of differentiation. Overall, the results indicate that rosiglitazone induced overexpression of PPAR-γ that in turn enhanced adipogenesis, particularly browning adipogenesis. This study reports the browning effects of rosiglitazone during the differentiation of iMSCs into adipocytes in association with the activation of MAPK and PI3K signaling pathways. Cutaneous melanoma circulating tumour cells (CTCs) are phenotypically and molecularly heterogeneous. We profiled the gene expression of CTC subpopulations immunomagnetic-captured by targeting either the melanoma-associated marker, MCSP, or the melanoma-initiating marker, ABCB5. Firstly, the expression of a subset of melanoma genes was investigated by RT-PCR in MCSP-enriched and ABCB5-enriched CTCs isolated from a total of 59 blood draws from 39 melanoma cases. Of these, 6 MCSP- and 6 ABCB5-enriched CTC fractions were further analysed using a genome-wide gene expression microarray. The transcriptional programs of both CTC subtypes included cell survival maintenance, cell proliferation, and migration pathways. ABCB5-enriched CTCs were specifically characterised by up-regulation of genes involved in epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT), suggesting an invasive phenotype. These findings underscore the presence of at least two distinct melanoma CTC subpopulations with distinct transcriptional programs, which may have distinct roles in disease progression and response to therapy. Market conditions in emerging economies are often reported as less stable and volatile. The business sector, especially Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in emerging economies, face several shortcomings including lack of resources, lack of finance, lack of support and lack of human skills, etc. Hence, they look to international support and resources to survive in a long run in the dynamic markets. This research examines the role of international finance, international technology, international experience and international network in SME firms' Sustainable Competitive Performance (SCP) in Pakistan. SMEs are a major source of employment and value creation and, therefore, are very relevant to Pakistan economic and social development and improved sustainability. Hypotheses were tested on the data set collected from 304 emerging SMEs. After Structural Equation Modelling (SEM) was applied in Analysis of a Moment Structures (AMOS), the results indicate that international finance, international experience and international network significantly positively contribute to SCP, but international technology is not a significant predictor of SCP. This research recommends top managers and policy makers to give enough attention to the particular international resources and capabilities in order to configure their firm survival in the turbulent market. Cyclophilin A (CypA) is a key member of immunophilins that has peptidyl-prolyl cis/trans isomerase (PPIase) activity. Besides acting as a cellular receptor for immunosuppressive drug cyclosporine A (CsA), CypA is involved in various cellular activities. CypA has an important role in viral infection which either facilitates or inhibits their replication. Inhibition of CypA via inhibitors is useful for overcoming several viral infections, indicating that CypA is an attractive target for anti-viral therapy. Collectively, these facts demonstrate the critical roles of CypA in mediating or inhibiting viral infections, suggesting that CypA can be an attractive cellular target for the development of anti-viral therapy.
