This study assessed the influence of sediment and water redistribution in host sediments on peperite formation by examining the peperites at the boundary between Cretaceous lacustrine sedimentary successions and intruding dikes (D1 and D2). The peperite zones occur along the dike margins and consist of fluidal juvenile fragments, classified as Type A and Type B perperite zones based on lateral extent of the peperite zones. Type A peperite zone, the dominant type, exhibites a narrow distribution (<20 cm), whereas Type B peperite zone sporadically occurs along D1 with a wider width (<1 m). Type B peperite zone is laterally linked with clastic dikes. These dikes containi fluidal shaped dike fragments with jigsaw-fit textures, indicating syn-magmatic fluidization and the resultant formation of the clastic dike via heat transfer. During dike emplacement, the interaction between the host sediments and the intruding magma formed Type A along the margins. Simultaneously, the clastic dikes, composed of fluidized sediments and water, supplied additional water and sediments, enhancing magma-host sediment intermingling and leading to the wide lateral extent of Type B. Our findings demonstrate that sediment and water redistribution via syn-magmatic fluidization is crucial in peperite formation, influencing the initial processes of phreatomagmatic volcanism. A regional water supply system in Jeju Island, South Korea, comprising 23 wellfields with 5 to 10 groundwater extraction wells (20–100 m spacing), provides water to the residents of the island. Regular large-scale groundwater pumping and excessive extraction in these wellfields have resulted in a decrease in groundwater levels. Using a numerical model, we aimed to assess the effect of large-scale groundwater extraction at four wellfields in Namwon, located in the southeastern part of the island. The numerical model estimated an approximately 0.16–0.21 m decline in water levels, which is consistent with field observations. Minor declines are inherently influenced by the regional hydrogeological setting of the study area, which involves high precipitation rates and a groundwater flow system that facilitates rapid groundwater replenishment. However, the model also shows that the decrease in groundwater levels is expected to intensify to 0.20–0.77 m in cases of extreme drought periods and increasing rates of groundwater pumping. In addition, this study suggests that sufficient well and wellfield separation distances should be considered to prevent well interference effects in areas, such as the western part of the island, with increased decline in water levels due to groundwater extraction. Diabetes is a prevalent and debilitating metabolic disorder affecting a large population worldwide. The condition is characterized by insulin resistance and impaired function of pancreatic β-cells, leading to elevated blood glucose levels. In this study, the antidiabetic effects of Erigeron annuus extract (EAE) on zebrafish with damaged pancreatic islets caused by insulin resistance were investigated. The study utilized the zebrafish model to monitor live pancreatic islets. RNA sequencing was also conducted to determine the mechanism by which EAE exerts its antidiabetic effect. The results showed that EAE was effective in recovering reduced islets in excess insulin-induced zebrafish. The effective concentration at 50% (EC50) of EAE was determined to be 0.54 μg/mL, while the lethal concentration at 50% (LC50) was calculated as 202.5 μg/mL. RNA sequencing indicated that the mode of action of EAE is related to its ability to induce mitochondrial damage and suppress endoplasmic reticulum stress. The findings of this study demonstrate the efficacy and therapeutic potential of EAE in treating insulin resistance in zebrafish. The results suggest that EAE may offer a promising approach for the management of diabetes by reducing mitochondrial damage and suppressing endoplasmic reticulum stress. Marinolides A and B, two new 24- and 26-membered bacterial macrolactones, were isolated from the marine-derived actinobacterium AJS-327 and their stereostructures initially assigned by bioinformatic data analysis. Macrolactones typically possess complex stereochemistry, the assignments of which have been one of the most difficult undertakings in natural products chemistry, and in most cases, the use of X-ray diffraction methods and total synthesis have been the major methods of assigning their absolute configurations. More recently, however, it has become apparent that the integration of bioinformatic data is growing in utility to assign absolute configurations. Genome mining and bioinformatic analysis identified the 97 kb mld biosynthetic cluster harboring seven type I polyketide synthases. A detailed bioinformatic investigation of the ketoreductase and enoylreductase domains within the multimodular polyketide synthases, coupled with NMR and X-ray diffraction data, allowed for the absolute configurations of marinolides A and B to be determined. While using bioinformatics to assign the relative and absolute configurations of natural products has high potential, this method must be coupled with full NMR-based analysis to both confirm bioinformatic assignments as well as any additional modifications that occur during biosynthesis. Sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) is a common condition that results from the loss of function of hair cells, which are responsible for converting sound into electrical signals within the cochlea and auditory nerve. Despite the prevalence of SNHL, a universally effective treatment has yet to be approved. To address this absence, the present study aimed to investigate the potential therapeutic effects of TS, a combination of Cuscutae Semen and Rehmanniae Radix Preparata. To this end, both in vitro and in vivo experiments were performed to evaluate the efficacy of TS with respect to SNHL. The results showed that TS was able to protect against ototoxic neomycin-induced damage in both HEI-OC1 cells and otic hair cells in zebrafish. Furthermore, in images obtained using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), an increase in the number of kinocilia, which was prompted by the TS treatment, was observed in the zebrafish larvae. In a noise-induced hearing loss (NIHL) mouse model, TS improved hearing thresholds as determined by the auditory brainstem response (ABR) test. Additionally, TS was found to regulate several genes related to hearing loss, including Trpv1, Cacna1h, and Ngf, as determined by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) analysis. In conclusion, the findings of this study suggest that TS holds promise as a potential treatment for sensorineural hearing loss. Light-emitting diode (LED) technology is one of the most important light sources in the plant industry for enhancing growth and specific metabolites in plants. In this study, we analyzed the growth, primary and secondary metabolites of 10 days old kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) sprouts exposed to different LED light conditions. The results showed that the highest fresh weight was achieved under red LED light, whereas the highest shoot and root lengths were recorded below the blue LED light. Furthermore, high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) analysis revealed the presence of 13 phenylpropanoid compounds, 8 glucosinolates (GSLs), and 5 different carotenoids. The phenylpropanoid and GSL contents were highest under blue LED light. In contrast, the carotenoid content was found to be maximum beneath white LED light. Principal component analysis (PCA) and partial least-squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) of the 71 identified metabolites using HPLC and gas chromatography–time-of-flight mass spectrometry (GC-TOF-MS) showed a clear separation, indicating that different LEDs exhibited variation in the accumulation of primary and secondary metabolites. A heat map and hierarchical clustering analysis revealed that blue LED light accumulated the highest amount of primary and secondary metabolites. Overall, our results demonstrate that exposure of kohlrabi sprouts to blue LED light is the most suitable condition for the highest growth and is effective in increasing the phenylpropanoid and GSL content, whereas white light might be used to enhance carotenoid compounds in kohlrabi sprouts. Background and Objectives: Advanced liver fibrosis in patients with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can be a major predictor of cardiovascular disease (CVD) events and cardiac complications. However, the clinical significance of cardiac symptoms and abnormal electrocardiography (ECG) findings in patients with NAFLD associated with advanced liver fibrosis is unclear. Therefore, our study was aimed to evaluate the clinical implications based on the association between cardiac symptoms with ECG abnormalities for advanced liver fibrosis in patients with NAFLD. Materials and Methods: Of 31,795 participants who underwent health checkups, 6293 were diagnosed with NAFLD using ultrasound and inclusion criteria in a retrospective cross-sectional study. Advanced liver fibrosis was assessed based on a low NAFLD fibrosis score (NFS) and fibrosis-4 index (Fib-4) cut-off values (COVs). Cardiac data were assessed using a cardiac symptom questionnaire and 12-lead electrocardiography (ECG). Results: Among 6293 NAFLD patients with NAFLD, 304 (4.8%) experienced cardiac symptoms. NFS and Fib-4 indicated higher rates of advanced fibrosis in the cardiac-symptomatic group than in the non-symptomatic group (NFS: 7.3 vs. 4.1%; Fib-4: 7.8 vs. 3.7%; both p < 0.001). Cardiac symptoms were independently associated with advanced liver fibrosis using a step-wise-adjusted model and NFS and Fib-4 (final adjusted odds ratio (aOR), 1.40; 95% CI, 1.06–1.85; p = 0.018 for NFS; aOR, 1.67; 95%, 1.30–2.15; p < 0.001 for Fib-4). Cardiac symptoms with abnormal ECG findings independently predicted advanced liver fibrosis (aOR, 2.43; 95% CI, 1.72–3.39; p < 0.001 for NFS; aOR, 3.02; 95% CI, 2.19–4.15; p < 0.001 for Fib-4). Metabolic syndrome has become a global health care problem since it is rapidly increasing worldwide. The search for alternative natural supplements may have potential benefits for obesity and diabetes patients. Diospyros kaki fruit extract and its oligosaccharides, including gentiobiose, melibiose, and raffinose, were examined for their anti-insulin resistance and obesity-preventing effect in zebrafish larvae. The results show that D. kaki oligosaccharides improved insulin resistance and high-fat-diet-induced obesity in zebrafish larvae, evidenced by enhanced β-cell recovery, decreased abdominal size, and reduced the lipid accumulation. The mechanism of the oligosaccharides, molecular docking, and enzyme activities of PTP1B were investigated. Three of the oligosaccharides had a binding interaction with the catalytic active sites of PTP1B, but did not show inhibitory effects in an enzyme assay. The catalytic residues of PTP1B were typically conserved and the cellular penetration of the cell membrane was necessary for the inhibitors. The results of the mechanism of action study indicate that D. kaki fruit extract and its oligosaccharides affected gene expression changes in inflammation- (TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-1β), lipogenesis- (SREBF1 and FASN), and lipid-lowering (CPT1A)-related genes. Low skeletal muscle mass (LSMM) has emerged as a potential risk factor for non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, its clinical implications in patients with lean NAFLD have not yet been elucidated. We investigated the role of LSMM in patients with lean NAFLD. Lean NAFLD was defined as a body mass index of ≤23 kg/m2. Using bioelectrical impedance analysis, the appendicular skeletal muscle mass (ASM) was adjusted by height squared. The LSMM was based on 1 SD below the sex-specific mean for young, healthy Asian adults. Of the 8905 ultrasound-confirmed NAFLD patients, 3670 (41.2%) were diagnosed with lean NAFLD. The lean NAFLD group was younger (45.0 vs. 49.0 years, p < 0.001), and had a lower waist circumference (74.0 vs. 85.0 cm, p < 0.001), lower prevalence of diabetes (3.1 vs. 7.4%, p < 0.001) and hypertension (4.2 vs. 15.2%, p < 0.001), and a higher proportion of LSMM (28.0 vs. 2.2%, p < 0.001) than the non-lean NAFLD group. Stepwise adjusted models suggested that LSMM was associated with lean individuals with NAFLD (odds ratio = 7.02, p < 0.001). We focus on the importance of accurately describing the flow behaviors of metallic materials to be cold formed; we refer to several valuable examples. We review the typical experimental methods by which flow curves are obtained, in addition to several combined experimental-numerical methods. The characteristics of four fundamental flow models including the Ludwik, Voce, Hollomon, and Swift models are explored in detail. We classify all flow models in the literature into three groups, including the Ludwik and Voce families, and blends thereof. We review the experimental and numerical methods used to optimize the flow curves. Representative flow models are compared via tensile testing, with a focus on the necking point and pre- or post-necking strain hardening. Several closed-form function models employed for the non-isothermal analyses of cold metal forming are also examined. The traditional bilinear C-m model and derivatives thereof are used to describe the complicated flow behaviors of metallic materials at cold forming temperatures, particularly in terms of their applications to metal forming simulations and process optimization. Recently, three-dimensional printing (3DP) technology has been widely adopted in biology and biomedical applications, thanks to its capacity to readily construct complex 3D features. Using hot-melt extrusion 3DP, scaffolds for bone tissue engineering were fabricated using a composite of biodegradable polycaprolactone (PCL) and hydroxyapatite (HA). However, there are hardly any published reports on the application of the fused deposition modeling (FDM) method using feed filaments, which is the most common 3D printing method. In this study, we report on the fabrication and characterization of biocompatible filaments made of polycaprolactone (PCL)/hydroxyapatite (HA), a raw material mainly used for bone scaffolds, using FDM 3D printing. A series of filaments with varying HA content, from 5 to 25 wt.%, were fabricated. The mechanical and electrical properties of the various structures, printed using a commercially available 3D printer, were examined. Specifically, mechanical tensile tests were performed on the 3D-printed filaments and specimens. In addition, the electrical dielectric properties of the 3D-printed structures were investigated. Our method facilitates the fabrication of biocompatible structures using FDM-type 3DP, creating not only bone scaffolds but also testbeds for mimicking bone structure that may be useful in various fields of study. This paper presents a compact-sized haptic device based on a cable-driven parallel robot (CDPR) mechanism for teleoperation. CDPRs characteristically have large workspaces and lightweight actuators. An intuitive and user-friendly remote control has not yet been achieved, owing to the unfamiliar multiple-cable configuration of CDPRs. To address this, we constructed a portable compact-sized CDPR with the same configuration as that of a larger fully constrained slave CDPR. The haptic device is controlled by an admittance control for stiffness adjustment and implemented in an embedded microprocessor-based controller for easy installation on an operator's desk. To validate the performance of the device, we constructed an experimental teleoperation setup by using the prototyped portable CDPR as a master and larger-size CDPR as a slave robot. Experimental results showed that a human operator can successfully control the master device from a remote site and synchronized motion between the master and slave device was performed. Moreover, the user-friendly teleoperation could intuitively address situations at a remote site and provide an operator with realistic force during the motion of the slave CDPR. In this work, we report on a flexible triboelectric generator (TEG) with a multilayer polymer structure, consisting of a poly(vinylidene fluoride-co-trifluoroethylene) (PVDF-TrFE) layer sandwiched by polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) layers for the performance enhancement of TEGs. We confirmed that the output performance of the TEG is closely dependent on the structure and polarization direction of the PVDF-TrFE layer. In addition, the PDMS layer serves as the electron trapping layer and suppresses the discharging of the surface charges, boosting the output performance. Furthermore, the polarized PVDF-TrFE layer in the preferred direction contributes to increasing the surface potential during the contact–separation motion. The interaction between these two polymer layers synergistically leads to the boosted output performance of TEGs. Specifically, the maximum peak-to-peak output voltage and current density of 420 V and 50 μA/cm2 generated by the proposed architecture, representing approximately a fivefold improvement compared with the TEG with a single layer, even though the same friction layers were used for contact electrification. The content of chlorophyll, a fundamental component required for photosynthesis in plants, has been widely studied across crop species. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity of 453 peanut accessions. We evaluated the evolutionary relationships using a genome-wide association study (GWAS) of leaf color data based on chlorophyll content analysis using the Axiom_Arachis array containing 58K single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). We identified seven SNPs as being significantly associated with leaf chlorophyll content on the chromosomes Aradu.A02, Aradu.A08, Araip.B02, Araip.B05, Araip.B06, and Araip.B08 in a GAPIT analysis. The SNP AX-176820297 on Araip.B05 was significantly linked with leaf chlorophyll content across the seasons. The Arahy.SDG4EV gene was detected to be in linkage disequilibrium (LD) with the significant SNPs, and its expression was significantly correlated with leaf chlorophyll content. The results of the current study provide useful and fundamental information with which to assess genetic variations in chlorophyll content and can be utilized for further genetic and genomic studies and breeding programs in peanuts. Kohlrabi is considered an important dietary vegetable worldwide. In this study, we investigated the growth and accumulation of phenolic compounds (PCs) and glucosinolates in sprouts of pale green and purple kohlrabi (Brassica oleracea var. gongylodes) in response to light and dark conditions. Pale green kohlrabi presented high fresh weight and root length irrespective of light treatment, whereas under dark conditions, it presented higher fresh weight and shoot length than purple kohlrabi. In contrast, the root length of both kohlrabies increased markedly under light conditions compared to that under dark conditions. Thirteen PCs and eight glucosinolates were detected and quantified in 10-day-old pale green and purple kohlrabies. In both kohlrabies, the individual and total phenolic levels were much higher under the light treatment than under the dark treatment. Under light and dark conditions, the total phenolic content was 6362.13 and 5475.04 µg/g dry weight in the pale green kohlrabi, respectively, whereas in the purple kohlrabi, it was 10,115.76 and 9361.74 µg/g dry weight, respectively. Dark conditions favored higher accumulation of glucosinolates than light conditions. Progoitrin, neoglucobrassicin, glucoerucin, and 4-methoxyglucobrassicin were the predominant glucosinolates in both kohlrabies and were present in much higher amounts in the pale green kohlrabi. In pale green kohlrabi under dark conditions, the total glucosinolates content was 4.75 and 2.62 times higher than that of the purple kohlrabi under light and dark conditions, respectively. Among individual glucosinolates, in the pale green kohlrabi under the dark condition, progoitrin was found to have the highest content, which was 90.28 and 54.51 times higher than that in the purple kohlrabi under light and dark conditions, respectively. These results show that the phenolic and glucosinolates levels varied widely, and these variations between the two types of kohlrabi under both light and dark conditions were significant. Rapeseed is an economically important oilseed crop throughout the world. We examined the content and composition of glucosinolates (GSLs) and phenolics in the sprouts of seven Korean cultivars. A total of eight GSLs that include four aliphatic GSLs (AGSLs) (progoitrin, gluconapin, gluconapoleiferin, and glucobrassicanapin) and four indole GSLs (IGSLs) (4-methoxyglucobrassicin, 4-hydroxyglucobrassicin, neoglucobrassicin, and glucobrassicin) were identified in these cultivars. Of the total GSLs, the highest level was detected for progoitrin, while the lowest level was identified for glucobrassicanapin in all the cultivars. Phenolics that include chlorogenic acid, catechin hydrate, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, gallic acid, ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, epicatechin, caffeic acid, rutin, quercetin, trans-cinnamic acid, benzoic acid, and kaempferol were present in all the cultivars. Of these, rutin was identified with the highest level while trans-cinnamic acid was identified with the lowest level in all the cultivars. Cluster analysis revealed the unique metabolic signature of eight GSLs and thirteen phenolics for the seven cultivars of rapeseed, which implies that genomic commonality and variability resulted from the previous breeding program. Further, gene expression and cis-regulatory elements suggest that the biosynthesis of GSLs and phenolics of these cultivars appears to be regulated through transcription factors associated with stress responses, phytohormones, and cellular growth. Insulin resistance, which occurs when insulin levels are sufficiently high over a prolonged period, causing the cells to fail to respond normally to the hormone. As a system for insulin resistance and diabetes drug development, insulin-resistant rodent models have been clearly established, but there is a limitation to high-throughput drug screening. Recently, zebrafish have been identified as an excellent system for drug discovery and identification of therapeutic targets, but studies on insulin resistance models have not been extensively performed. Therefore, we aimed to make a rapid insulin-resistant zebrafish model that complements the existing rodent models. To establish this model, zebrafish were treated with 10 μM insulin for 48 h. This model showed characteristics of insulin-resistant disease such as damaged pancreatic islets. Then we confirmed the recovery of the pancreatic islets after pioglitazone treatment. In addition, it was found that insulin-resistant drugs have as significant an effect in zebrafish as in humans, and these results proved the value of the zebrafish insulin resistance model for drug selection. In addition, RNA sequencing was performed to elucidate the mechanism involved. KEGG pathway enrichment analysis of differentially expressed genes showed that insulin resistance altered gene expression due to the MAPK signaling and calcium signaling pathways. Hydrogen gas (H2) is being intensively proposed as a next-generation clean energy owing to the depletion of fossil fuels. Electrochemical water splitting is one of the most promising processes for hydrogen production. Furthermore, many efforts focusing on electrochemical water splitting have been made to develop low-cost, electrochemically active, and stable catalysts for efficient hydrogen production. MoS2 has emerged as an attractive material for developing catalysts for the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Hence, in this study, we design hierarchically ordinated two-dimensional (2D) MoS2 nanosheets on three-dimensional (3D) reduced graphene oxide (rGO) (H-2D/3D-MoS2-rGO) aerogel structures as a new class of electrocatalysts for the HER. We use the one-pot hydrothermal synthesis route for developing high-performance electroactive materials for the HER. The as-prepared H-2D/3D-MoS2-rGO contains a unique 3D hierarchical structure providing large surface areas owing to the 3D porous networks of rGO and more active sites owing to the many edge sites in the MoS2 nanosheets. In addition, the H-2D/3D-MoS2-rGO structure exhibits remarkable electrochemical properties during the HER. It shows a lower overpotential than pure MoS2 and excellent electrochemical stability owing to the large number of active sites (highly exposed edge sites) and high electrical conductivity from the rGO structure. Lithium-air batteries (LABs) continue to receive attention as a promising power source because they possess a high theoretical energy density of 3436 Wh L−1. However, the remaining Li2O2 resulting from the irreversible decomposition of Li2O2 during the charge process is one of the key challenges so as to address the deterioration of the cycling performance of LABs. In this study, we propose and report a redox-mediated polymer catalyst (RPC) as a cathode catalyst being composed of LiI and poly (vinylidene fluoride-co-hexafluoropropylene) (PVDF-HFP) with multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) as the cathode material. In the RPC, iodine molecules are chemically combined with the PVDF-HFP chain. The as-prepared RPC exhibits increased cycling performance by 194% and decreased overpotential by 21.1% at 0.1 mA cm−2 compared to the sample without LiI molecules. Furthermore, these results suggest that the RPC consisting of a polymer chain and redox mediators will be extensively utilized as highly efficient catalysts of LABs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new cytotoxic thiodepsipeptide, verrucosamide (1), was isolated along with the known, related cyclic peptide thiocoraline, from the extract of a marine-derived actinomycete, a Verrucosispora sp., our strain CNX-026. The new peptide, which is composed of two rare seven-membered 1,4-thiazepane rings, was elucidated by a combination of spectral methods and the absolute configuration was determined by a single X-ray diffraction study. Verrucosamide (1) showed moderate cytotoxicity and selectivity in the NCI 60 cell line bioassay. The most susceptible cell lines were MDA-MB-468 breast carcinoma with an LD50 of 1.26 µM, and COLO 205 colon adenocarcinoma with an LD50 of 1.4 µM. Also isolated along with verrucosamide were three small 3-hydroxy(alkoxy)-quinaldic acid derivatives that appear to be products of the same biosynthetic pathway. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Recently an active locomotive capsule endoscope (CE) for diagnosis and treatment in the digestive system has been widely studied. However, real-time localization to achieve precise feedback control and record suspicious positioning in the intestine is still challenging owing to the limitation of capsule size, relatively large diagnostic volume, and compatibility of other devices in clinical site. To address this issue, we present a novel robotic localization sensing methodology based on the kinematics of a planar cable driven parallel robot (CDPR) and measurements of the quasistatic magnetic field of a Hall effect sensor (HES) array. The arrangement of HES and the Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) algorithm are applied to estimate the position of the permanent magnet (PM) in the CE, and the planar CDPR is incorporated to follow the PM in the CE. By tracking control of the planar CDPR, the position of PM in any arbitrary position can be obtained through robot forward kinematics with respect to the global coordinates at the bedside. The experimental results show that the root mean square error (RMSE) for the estimated position value of PM was less than 1.13 mm in the X, Y, and Z directions and less than 1.14° in the θ and φ orientation, where the sensing space could be extended to ±70 mm for the given 34 × 34 mm2 HES array and the average moving distance in the Z-direction is 40 ± 2.42 mm. The proposed method of the robotic sensing with HES and CDPR may advance the sensing space expansion technology by utilizing the provided single sensor module of limited sensible volume. Betaine is one of the most competitive compounds that accumulate in different cellular compartments to adjust osmotic balance. Among the various stressors, salinity stress often leads to osmotic and ionic stress in plants, either increasing or decreasing certain secondary plant metabolites. In this study, different concentrations of NaCl, betaine, and combined NaCl and betaine were used in time-course experiments to investigate growth pattern variation and accumulation of phenylpropanoid compounds in buckwheat sprouts. A significant increase in growth was observed with the application of 0.1–1.0 mM betaine. Although overall, the total phenylpropanoid compounds were lower compared to the control, the sole application of 50 mM NaCl and 1.0 mM betaine especially enhanced the accumulation of some of these compounds in comparison to others. Betaine application at lower concentrations was found to enhance the growth of buckwheat sprouts slightly. The results of this study show that phenylpropanoid content did not increase significantly in any of the treatments. However, it was proven that the phenylpropanoid biosynthetic pathway is stimulated under abiotic stress, resulting in a higher accumulation of various phenylpropanoid compounds. New antibiotics are desperately needed to overcome the societal challenges being encountered with methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA). In this study, a new tetracene derivative, named Mersaquinone (1), and the known Tetracenomycin D (2), Resistoflavin (3) and Resistomycin (4) have been isolated from the organic extract of the marine Streptomyces sp. EG1. The strain was isolated from a sediment sample collected from the North Coast of the Mediterranean Sea of Egypt. The chemical structure of Mersaquinone (1) was assigned based upon data from a diversity of spectroscopic techniques including HRESIMS, IR, 1D and 2D NMR measurements. Mersaquinone (1) showed antibacterial activity against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus with a minimum inhibitory concentration of 3.36 μg/mL. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electric power production continues to increase as the industry advances, and the demand for high-capacity batteries for efficient operation of the electric power produced is higher than ever before. Si has been attracting a great deal of attention recently as an anode electrode material because of its high theoretical capacity. However, it suffers from significant capacity-loss, resulting from the volume-expansion of Si during charge and discharge cycles. Inspired by the multiscale structures commonly found in nature, we attempt to solve this problem by patterning the surface of the Cu current-collector. To this end, we develop a direct, one-step method using laser patterning to manufacture a multiscale structure on the surface of the current-collector. The inherent exfoliation characteristic of the Cu current-collector allows the spontaneous formation of the multiscale structure while being irradiated with a laser. A micro/nano structure, with a different surface area, is fabricated by varying the laser output at three levels, and the batteries prepared with the fabricated Cu current-collector are tested to evaluate their charge-discharge characteristics and electrochemical impedance. The results show that the multiscale structure reduces mechanical stress. The initial capacity of the Cu current-collector is proportional to the laser output, and the initial capacity of the coin cell prepared with the Cu current-collector, fabricated at the highest laser output, is 396.7% higher than that of the coin cell prepared with a bare Cu current-collector. The impedance is inversely proportional to the laser output. The charge transfer resistance of the coin cell prepared with the Cu current-collector and irradiated with the highest laser output is 190.2% lower than that of the coin cell prepared with the bare Cu current-collector. In the current field of human recognition, most of the research being performed currently is focused on re-identification of different body images taken by several cameras in an outdoor environment. On the other hand, there is almost no research being performed on indoor human recognition. Previous research on indoor recognition has mainly focused on face recognition because the camera is usually closer to a person in an indoor environment than an outdoor environment. However, due to the nature of indoor surveillance cameras, which are installed near the ceiling and capture images from above in a downward direction, people do not look directly at the cameras in most cases. Thus, it is often difficult to capture front face images, and when this is the case, facial recognition accuracy is greatly reduced. To overcome this problem, we can consider using the face and body for human recognition. However, when images are captured by indoor cameras rather than outdoor cameras, in many cases only part of the target body is included in the camera viewing angle and only part of the body is captured, which reduces the accuracy of human recognition. To address all of these problems, this paper proposes a multimodal human recognition method that uses both the face and body and is based on a deep convolutional neural network (CNN). Specifically, to solve the problem of not capturing part of the body, the results of recognizing the face and body through separate CNNs of VGG Face-16 and ResNet-50 are combined based on the score-level fusion by Weighted Sum rule to improve recognition performance. The results of experiments conducted using the custom-made Dongguk face and body database (DFB-DB1) and the open ChokePoint database demonstrate that the method proposed in this study achieves high recognition accuracy (the equal error rates of 1.52% and 0.58%, respectively) in comparison to face or body single modality-based recognition and other methods used in previous studies.

Conventional nighttime face detection studies mostly use near-infrared (NIR) light cameras or thermal cameras, which are robust to environmental illumination variation and low illumination. However, for the NIR camera, it is difficult to adjust the intensity and angle of the additional NIR illuminator according to its distance from an object. As for the thermal camera, it is expensive to use as a surveillance camera. For these reasons, we propose a nighttime face detection method based on deep learning using a single visible-light camera. In a long-distance night image, it is difficult to detect faces directly from the entire image due to noise and image blur. Therefore, we propose Two-Step Faster region-based convolutional neural network (R-CNN) based on the image preprocessed by histogram equalization (HE). As a two-step scheme, our method sequentially performs the detectors of body and face areas, and locates the face inside a limited body area. By using our two-step method, the processing time by Faster R-CNN can be reduced while maintaining the accuracy of face detection by Faster R-CNN. Using a self-constructed database called Dongguk Nighttime Face Detection database (DNFD-DB1) and an open database of Fudan University, we proved that the proposed method performs better compared to other existing face detectors. In addition, the proposed Two-Step Faster R-CNN outperformed single Faster R-CNN and our method with HE showed higher accuracies than those without our preprocessing in nighttime face detection.

Extracting powerful image features plays an important role in computer vision systems. Many methods have previously been proposed to extract image features for various computer vision applications, such as the scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT), speed-up robust feature (SURF), local binary patterns (LBP), histogram of oriented gradients (HOG), and weighted HOG. Recently, the convolutional neural network (CNN) method for image feature extraction and classification in computer vision has been used in various applications. In this research, we propose a new gender recognition method for recognizing males and females in observation scenes of surveillance systems based on feature extraction from visible-light and thermal camera videos through CNN. Experimental results confirm the superiority of our proposed method over state-of-the-art recognition methods for the gender recognition problem using human body images.

Vanillic acid, an oxidized form of vanillin, is a benzoic acid derivative used as a flavoring agent. The objective of this study was to determine whether vanillic acid has beneficial effects against dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis. Our results showed that vanillic acid reduced the severity of the clinical signs of DSS-induced colitis, including weight loss and shortening of colon length, and the disease activity index. The results of this study showed that vanillic acid significantly suppressed the expression of cyclooxygenase-2 and the activation of transcription nuclear factor-κB p65 in DSS-treated colon tissues. In addition, we observed that the plasma levels of interleukin (IL)-6 were higher in the DSS-treated group than in the control group, but these increased levels were reduced by the administration of vanillic acid. Taken together, these findings suggest that vanillic acid has a beneficial effect on DSS-induced ulcerative colitis, thereby indicating its usefulness in the regulation of chronic intestinal inflammation.

Chrysophanol is a member of the anthraquinone family and has multiple pharmacological effects, but the exact mechanism of the anti-inflammatory effects of chrysophanol has yet to be thoroughly elucidated. In this study, we attempted to determine the effects of chrysophanol on dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis and lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammatory responses in mouse peritoneal macrophages. The findings of this study demonstrated that chrysophanol effectively attenuated overall clinical scores as well as various pathological markers of colitis. Additionally, chrysophanol inhibited the production of tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha, interleukin (IL)-6 and the expression of cyclooxygenase (COX)-2 levels induced by LPS. We showed that this anti-inflammatory effect of chrysophanol is through suppression of the activation of NF-kappaB and caspase-1 in LPS-stimulated macrophages. These results provide novel insights into the pharmacological actions of chrysophanol as a potential molecule for use in the treatment of inflammatory diseases.
