Adversarial attacks have received much attention as communication network applications rise in popularity. Connected and Automated Vehicles (CAVs) must be protected against adversarial attacks to ensure passenger and vehicle safety on the road. Nevertheless, CAVs are susceptible to several types of attacks, such as those that target intra- and inter-vehicle networks. These harmful attacks not only cause user privacy and confidentiality to be lost, but they also have more grave repercussions, such as physical harm and death. It is critical to precisely and quickly identify adversarial attacks to protect CAVs. This research proposes (1) a new dataset comprising three adversarial attacks in the CAV network traffic and normal traffic, (2) a two-phased adversarial attack detection technique named TAAD-CAV, where in the first phase, an ensemble voting classifier having three machine learning classifiers and one separate deep learning classifier is trained, and the output is used in the next phase. In the second phase, a meta classifier (i.e., Decision Tree is used as a meta classifier) is trained on the combined predictions from the previous phase to detect adversarial attacks. We preprocess the dataset by cleaning data, removing missing values, and adjusting the Z-score normalization. Evaluation metrics such as accuracy, recall, precision, F1-score, and confusion matrix are employed to evaluate and compare the performance of the proposed model. Tuberculosis (TB) is an infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium. It primarily impacts the lungs but can also endanger other organs, such as the renal system, spine, and brain. When an infected individual sneezes, coughs, or speaks, the virus can spread through the air, which contributes to its high contagiousness. The goal is to enhance detection recognition with an X-ray image dataset. This paper proposed a novel approach, named the Tuberculosis Segmentation-Guided Diagnosis Model (TSSG-CNN) for Detecting Tuberculosis, using a combined semantic segmentation and adaptive convolutional neural network (CNN) architecture. The proposed approach is distinguished from most of the previously proposed approaches in that it uses the combination of a deep learning segmentation model with a follow-up classification model based on CNN layers to segment chest X-ray images more precisely as well as to improve the diagnosis of TB. It contrasts with other approaches like ILCM, which is optimized for sequential learning, and explainable AI approaches, which focus on explanations. Moreover, our model is beneficial for the simplified procedure of feature optimization from the perspectives of approach using the Mayfly Algorithm (MA). Other models, including simple CNN, Batch Normalized CNN (BN-CNN), and Dense CNN (DCNN), are also evaluated on this dataset to evaluate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The performance of the TSSG-CNN model outperformed all the models with an impressive accuracy of 98.75% and an F1 score of 98.70%. The evaluation findings demonstrate how well the deep learning segmentation model works and the potential for further research. Connected and automated vehicles (CAVs), integrated with sensors, cameras, and communication networks, are transforming the transportation industry and providing new opportunities for consumers to enjoy personalized and seamless experiences. The fast proliferation of connected vehicles on the road and the growing trend of autonomous driving create vast amounts of data that need to be analyzed in real time. Anomaly detection in CAVs refers to identifying any unusual or unforeseen behavior in the data generated by vehicles' various sensors and components. Anomaly detection aims to identify any unusual behavior that might indicate a problem or a malfunction in the vehicle. To identify and detect anomalies efficiently, a method must deal with noisy data, missing data, dynamic frequency data, and low- and high-magnitude data, and it must be accurate enough to detect anomalies in a dynamic sensor streaming environment. Therefore, this paper proposes a fast and efficient hard-voting-based technique named FT-HV, comprising three fine-tuned machine learning algorithms to detect and classify anomaly behavior in CAVs for single and mixed sensory datasets. In experiments, we evaluate our approach on the benchmark Sensor Anomaly dataset that contains data from various vehicle sensors at low and high magnitudes. Further, it contains single and mixed anomaly types that are challenging to detect and identify. The results reveal that the proposed approach outperforms existing solutions for detecting single anomaly types at low magnitudes and detecting mixed anomaly types in all settings. Background: Myocardial injury after non-cardiac surgery (MINS) has been known to be associated with mortality in various surgical patients; however, its prognostic role in abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) open repair remains underexplored. This study aimed to investigate the role of MINS as a predictor of mortality in patients who underwent AAA open repair. Methods: This retrospective study investigated 352 patients who underwent open repair for non-ruptured AAA. The predictors of 30-day and 1-year mortalities were investigated using logistic regression analysis. Results: MINS was diagnosed in 41% of the patients after AAA open repair in this study. MINS was an independent risk factor of 30-day mortality (odds ratio [OR]: 10.440, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.278–85.274, p = 0.029) and 1-year mortality (OR: 5.189, 95% CI: 1.357–19.844, p = 0.016). Kaplan–Meier survival curves demonstrated significantly lower overall survival rates in patients with MINS compared to those without MINS (p = 0.003). Conclusion: This study revealed that MINS is a common complication after AAA open repair and is an independent risk factor of 30-day and 1-year mortalities. This study aimed to identify and evaluate drug candidates targeting the kinase inhibitory region of suppressor of cytokine signaling (SOCS) 3 for the treatment of allergic rhinitis (AR). Utilizing an artificial intelligence (AI)-based new drug development platform, virtual screening was conducted to identify compounds inhibiting the SH2 domain binding of SOCS3. Luminescence assays assessed the ability of these compounds to restore JAK-2 activity diminished by SOCS3. Jurkat T and BEAS-2B cells were utilized to investigate changes in SOCS3 and STAT3 expression, along with STAT3 phosphorylation in response to the identified compounds. In an OVA-induced allergic rhinitis mouse model, we measured serum levels of total IgE and OVA-specific IgE, performed real-time PCR on nasal mucosa samples to quantify Th2 cytokines and IFN-γ expression, and conducted immunohistochemistry to analyze eosinophil levels. Screening identified 20 hit compounds with robust binding affinities. As the concentration of SOCS3 increased, a corresponding decrease in JAK2 activity was observed. Compounds 5 and 8 exhibited significant efficacy in restoring JAK2 activity without toxicity. Treatment with these compounds resulted in reduced SOCS3 expression and the reinstatement of STAT3 phosphorylation in Jurkat T and BEAS-2B cells. In the OVA-induced allergic rhinitis mouse model, compounds 5 and 8 effectively alleviated nasal symptoms and demonstrated lower levels of immune markers compared to the allergy group. This study underscores the promising nonclinical efficacy of compounds identified through the AI-based drug development platform. A representative naturally occurring coumarin, 4-methylumbelliferone (5), was exposed to 50 kGy of gamma ray, resulting in four newly generated dihydrocoumarin products 1–4 induced by the gamma irradiation. The structures of these new products were elucidated by interpretation of spectroscopic data (NMR, MS, [α]D, and UV). The unusual bisdihydrocoumarin 4 exhibited improved tyrosinase inhibitory capacity toward mushroom tyrosinase with IC50 values of 19.8 ± 0.5 μM as compared to the original 4-methylumbelliferone (5). A kinetic analysis also exhibited that the potent metabolite 4 had non-competitive modes of action. Linkage of the hydroxymethyl group in the C-3 and C-4 positions on the lactone ring probably enhances the tyrosinase inhibitory effect of 4-methylumbelliferone (5). The treatment landscape for inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) has undergone substantial advancements with the introduction of biologics. However, a considerable number of patients either show an immediate lack of response or lose responsiveness over time, necessitating the development of innovative and effective treatment approaches. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are small lipid bilayer-enclosed structures that facilitate cell-to-cell molecular transfer and are integral to the pathogenesis of IBD. They play pivotal roles in maintaining the integrity of the intestinal epithelial barrier and the expulsion of cellular metabolites. The potential use of EVs as drug carriers or therapeutic agents has opened up a plethora of clinical applications. This review investigates the creation and content of EVs, their role in IBD development, and advances in their isolation and analytical techniques. Pressure ulcers (PUs) are a prevalent skin disease affecting patients with impaired mobility and in high-risk groups. These ulcers increase patients' suffering, medical expenses, and burden on medical staff. This study introduces a clinical decision support system and verifies it for predicting real-time PU occurrences within the intensive care unit (ICU) by using MIMIC-IV and in-house ICU data. We develop various machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) models for predicting PU occurrences in real time using the MIMIC-IV and validate using the MIMIC-IV and Kangwon National University Hospital (KNUH) dataset. To address the challenge of missing values in time series, we propose a novel recurrent neural network model, GRU-D++. This model outperformed other experimental models by achieving the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUROC) of 0.945 for the on-time prediction and AUROC of 0.912 for 48h in-advance prediction. Furthermore, in the external validation with the KNUH dataset, the fine-tuned GRU-D++ model demonstrated superior performances, achieving an AUROC of 0.898 for on-time prediction and an AUROC of 0.897 for 48h in-advance prediction. The proposed GRU-D++, designed to consider temporal information and missing values, stands out for its predictive accuracy. Our findings suggest that this model can significantly alleviate the workload of medical staff and prevent the worsening of patient conditions by enabling timely interventions for PUs in the ICU. An elevated platelet count may contribute to significant thrombotic events and pose a risk for diabetic microvascular complications. Albuminuria, one of the hallmarks of diabetes, is thought to be a risk factor for endothelial dysfunction. In this study, we investigated the association between relative thrombocytosis and an increased urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio in healthy adult participants. Using multivariate analyses on data from the Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey V–VI, 12,525 eligible native Koreans aged ≥ 20 were categorized into platelet count quintiles by sex. The highest platelet count quintile included younger, more obese participants with elevated white blood cell counts, poor lipid profiles, and a better estimated glomerular filtration rate. Restricted cubic spline regression analysis revealed significant associations between platelet count and fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin, and urine albumin-to-creatinine ratio. Adjusted logistic regression models indicated that heightened fasting blood glucose and platelet count were linked to risk of microalbuminuria (fasting blood glucose, odds ratio = 1.026, 95%CI = 1.011–1.042; platelet count, odds ratio = 1.004, 95%CI = 1.002–1.006). Particularly, an increased platelet count was notably associated with microalbuminuria progression in subjects with impaired fasting glucose. These findings suggest that an elevated platelet count, even below diagnostic thrombocytosis levels, independently correlates with an increased risk of vascular endothelial dysfunction in patients with impaired fasting glucose. We propose a method of manipulating the coercivity of anisotropic hydrogenation-disproportionation-desorption-recombination (HDDR) powders to fabricate high-remanence and fine-grained Nd-Fe-B magnets using only hot-pressing without a subsequent hot-deformation process. By reducing the Nd content of anisotropic HDDR precursors such that their coercivity (Hcj) is lowered, the c-axis of each HDDR particle is well-aligned parallel to the direction of the applied magnetic field during the magnetic alignment step. This is because the magnetic repulsive force between adjacent particles, determined by their remanent magnetization, decreases as a result of the low coercivity of each particle. Therefore, after hot-pressing the low-Hcj HDDR powders, a significantly higher remanence (11.2 kG) is achieved in the bulk than that achieved by hot-pressing the high-Hcj HDDR powders (8.2 kG). It is clearly confirmed by the large-scale electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) analysis that the alignment of the c-axis of each anisotropic HDDR particle in the bulk is improved when low-Hcj HDDR powders are used to fabricate hot-pressed magnets. This coercivity manipulation of HDDR powders can be a helpful method to expand the use of HDDR powders in fabricating anisotropic Nd-Fe-B bulk magnets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is an inflammation of the nasal and paranasal sinus mucosa, and eosinophilic CRS (eCRS) is a subtype characterized by significant eosinophil infiltration and immune response by T-helper-2 cells. The pathogenesis of eCRS is heterogeneous and involves various environmental and host factors. Proteases from external sources, such as mites, fungi, and bacteria, have been implicated in inducing type 2 inflammatory reactions. The balance between these proteases and endogenous protease inhibitors (EPIs) is considered important, and their imbalance can potentially lead to type 2 inflammatory reactions, such as eCRS. In this review, we discuss various mechanisms by which exogenous proteases influence eCRS and highlight the emerging role of endogenous protease inhibitors in eCRS pathogenesis. The increase in maritime traffic and vessel size has strengthened the need for economical and safe maritime transportation networks. Currently, ship path planning is based on past experience and shortest route usage. However, the increasing complexity of the marine environment and the development of autonomous ships require automatic shortest path generation based on maritime traffic networks. This paper proposes an efficient shortest path planning method using Dijkstra's algorithm based on a maritime traffic network dataset created by extracting maritime traffic routes through a spatial-temporal density analysis of large-scale AIS data and Delaunay triangulation. Additionally, the depth information of all digital charts in Korea was set as a safety contour to support safe path planning. The proposed network-based shortest path planning method was compared with the path planning and sailing distance of a training ship, and compliance with maritime laws was verified. The results demonstrate the practicality and safety of the proposed method, which can enable the establishment of a safe and efficient maritime transportation network along with the development of autonomous ships. In this study, we applied an optimal deep learning algorithm to detect defects in OLED cells. This study aims to enhance the yield of OLEDs by reducing the number of defective products through defect detection in OLED cells. Defects in OLED cells can arise owing to various factors, but dark spots are predominantly identified and studied. Therefore, actual dark spot images were required for this study. However, obtaining real data is challenging because of security concerns in the OLED industry. Therefore, a Solver program utilizing the finite element method (FEM) was employed to generate 2000 virtual dark spot images. The generated images were categorized into two groups: initial images of dark spots and images obtained after 10,000 h. The pixel values of these dark spot images were adjusted for efficient recognition and analysis. Furthermore, CNN, ResNet-50, and VGG-16 were implemented to apply the optimal deep learning algorithms. The results showed that the VGG-16 algorithm performed the best. A defect detection model was created based on the performance metrics of the deep learning algorithms. The model was trained using 1300 dark spot images and validated using 600 dark spot images. The validation results indicated an accuracy of 0.988 and a loss value of 0.026. A defect detection model that utilizes the VGG-16 algorithm was considered suitable for distinguishing dark spot images. To test the defect detection model, 100 images of dark spots were used. The experimental results indicated an accuracy of 89%. The images were classified as acceptable or defective based on the threshold values. By applying the VGG-16 deep learning algorithm to the defect detection model, we can enhance the yield of OLED products, reduce production costs, and contribute significantly to the advancement of OLED display manufacturing technology. Background: There is a lack of studies on utilising skeletal muscle mass via preoperative lumbar computed tomography or magnetic resonance imaging as a predictor of postoperative complications of posterior lumbar interbody fusion (PLIF) surgery in elderly patients. Methods: Patients aged >65 years who underwent PLIF were enrolled. The sum of the cross-sectional areas of the erector spinae muscles (CSABoth) was presented as the skeletal muscle mass. Postoperative complications were assessed using CSABoth, pulmonary function testing, and prognostic nutritional index (PNI). Results: Patients with postoperative complications showed significantly lower values of CSABoth (median 2266.70 (2239.73–2875.10) mm2 vs. 3060.30 (2749.25–3473.30) mm2, p < 0.001), functional vital capacity, forced expiratory volume at 1 s, and PNI. However, multiple logistic regression analysis identified American Society of Anaesthesiologists Physical Status (ASA PS) I (odds ratio 0.307 (95% confidence interval 0.110–0.852), p = 0.023), ASA PS III (4.033 (1.586–10.254), p = 0.003), CSABoth (0.999 (0.999–1.000), p < 0.001), and postoperative red blood cell (RBC) transfusion (1.603 (1.193–2.152), p = 0.002) as risk factors for postoperative complications after PLIF surgery. Although there have been many studies related to construction site safety that have tried to reduce accidents, no significant improvement has been reported. Because of the complex nature of construction work processes, it is important to have a scenario-based worksite safety management system instead of reports such as safety guidelines and manuals. This study utilizes accumulated construction site accident big data, namely Construction Safety Management Integrated Information (CSI), to establish accident scenarios for different work types. To propose accident occurrence scenarios, the hazard profile managed by CSI and prior research analyses are employed for each work type and cause materials at the construction site. For accident occurrence association rules, we developed a framework based on Work Breakdown Structure–Risk Breakdown Structure (WBS-RBS) for reinforced concrete work, temporary work, and earthwork, considering 25,986 accident cases. Subsequently, association analysis was conducted to derive association rules for each work type. The accident occurrence scenarios were extracted by classifying work types (project type, activity type) and cause materials (object, location). The analysis generated 145 association rules, and 76 association rules for reinforced concrete work, temporary work, and earthwork work were extracted to derive accident scenarios, considering scenarios with high accident frequency. Furthermore, by establishing association rules between work processes, we derived accident types and occurrence rules frequently observed at construction sites. These rules formed the basis for constructing accident occurrence scenarios for each construction type based on WBS-RBS. These findings facilitate the development of appropriate safety management plans and effective accident countermeasures tailored to specific construction types and causes. It is well established that sarcopenic obesity (SO) is linked to many diseases such as metabolic and non-alcoholic fatty liver diseases, but there is little known about the relationship between SO and hepatic fibrosis progression in chronic liver disease. This study compared body composition contents in patients with non-obesity (NOb) and SO using abdominal magnetic resonance imaging and investigated the relationship between hepatic fibrosis and SO factors. This retrospective study enrolled 60 patients (28 NOb; 32 SO) from June 2014 to December 2020. Patients underwent histopathologic investigation where they classified fibrosis stages based on the Meta-analysis of Histological Data in Viral Hepatitis fibrosis scoring system. Muscle and fat areas at the third lumber vertebra level were assessed. The variation in the areas of muscle (MA), subcutaneous adipose tissue (SAT), and visceral adipose tissue (VAT) among fibrosis stages, and associations between hepatic fibrosis and SO factors, were analyzed. There were significant differences in SAT and VAT (p < 0.001), whereas there was no difference in MA (p = 0.064). There were significant differences in MA/SAT (p = 0.009), MA/VAT (p < 0.001), and MA/(SAT+VAT) (p < 0.001). In all the patients, hepatic fibrosis positively correlated with serum aspartate aminotransferase level (AST, R = 0.324; p = 0.025). Especially in SO patients, hepatic fibrosis closely correlated with body mass index (BMI, R = 0.443; p = 0.011), AST (R = 0.415; p = 0.044), VAT (R = 0.653; p < 0.001), MA/VAT (R = −0.605; p < 0.001), and MA/(SAT+VAT) (R = −0.416; p = 0.018). However, there was no association in NOb patients. This study demonstrated that SO patients had larger SAT and VAT than NOb patients. Hepatic fibrosis in SO positively correlated with body visceral fat composition in combination with BMI and AST level. In this study, we evaluated the clinical and radiological manifestations of teenagers presenting with chest pain after coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) messenger RNA (mRNA) vaccination. We retrospectively enrolled 61 teenage patients, aged 13 to 19 years, who underwent echocardiography and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) for chest pain after COVID-19 mRNA vaccination, from November 2021 to April 2022. Medical records, laboratory results, echocardiographic, and CMR findings were analyzed. The mean age of the participants was 14.4 ± 1.9 years, with a male:female ratio of 28:33. Among the sixty-one patients with chest pain after COVID-19 vaccination, only two (3.3%) were diagnosed as confirmed myocarditis, and almost all of them recovered with conservative treatments. However, on CMR, 24 (39.3%) presented with mild myocardial abnormalities; 22 (36.1%) showed myocardial edema, and 19 (31.1%) were found to have a myocardial injury. Multivariate logistic analyses revealed that older age and female sex were significantly associated with myocardial abnormalities. In teenagers who present with chest pain after COVID-19 mRNA vaccination, confirmed myocarditis is uncommon. However, myocardial abnormalities on CMR might occur frequently, and females in their late teens might be more vulnerable to myocardial abnormalities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chronic constipation can lead to fecal impaction in the large bowel, which can cause pressure necrosis followed by perforation, known as a stercoral ulcer. In extensive posterior thoracolumbar surgery, a long operation time, large blood loss, and perioperative narcotic use may aggravate constipation. Moreover, sacral root palsy due to cauda equina syndrome (CES) can lead to the deterioration of fecal impaction. This report describes the case of a 77-year-old woman with CES who presented with saddle anesthesia, neurogenic bladder, bowel incontinence, and paraplegia. Five days prior, she had undergone extended posterior lumbar interbody fusion from L1 to L5. Lumbar magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed an extended epidural hematoma. After urgent neural decompression, she gradually recovered from the saddle anesthesia, leg pain, and paraplegia over 3 weeks. Thereafter, the patient suddenly developed massive hematochezia and hemorrhagic shock. Urgent colonoscopy was performed, and a stercoral ulcer in the sigmoid colon was diagnosed. After 4 weeks of intensive care for hemorrhagic shock, pneumonia, and systemic sepsis, the patient was transferred to a general ward for intensive rehabilitation. One year after the operation, she was able to walk with assistance, and her urinary and bowel incontinence completely recovered. Chronic constipation, a common clinical problem, can sometimes cause relatively obscure but potentially life-threatening complications such as stercoral ulceration. Possible factors including advanced age, extensive spinal surgeries, prolonged operation time, significant blood loss, perioperative narcotic use, and the presence of spinal cord injury might contribute to the development of this condition. It highlights the importance of recognizing the potential development of stercoral ulcers in patients with CES and emphasizes the need for prompt diagnosis and management to avert catastrophic complications. Birt–Hogg–Dube (BHD) is a rare genetic disorder characterized by multiple lung cysts, typical skin manifestations, and renal tumors. We prospectively enrolled thirty-one subjects from four South Korean institutions with typical lung cysts, and next-generation sequencing was conducted. We prospectively enrolled thirty-one subjects from four Korean institutions with typical lung cysts. Next-generation sequencing was performed to investigate mutations in the following genes: FLCN, TSC1, TSC2, CFTR, EFEMP2, ELN, FBLN5, LTBP4, and SERPINA1. BHD was diagnosed in 11 of the 31 enrolled subjects (35.5%; FLCN mutations). Notably, we identified three novel mutations (c.1098G>A, c.139G>T, and c.1335del) that have not been previously reported. In addition to FLCN mutations, we also observed mutations in CFTR (16.1%), LTBP4 (9.7%), TSC2 (9.7%), TSC1 (3.2%), ELN (3.2%), and SERPINA1 (3.2%). According to a systematic review of 45 South Korean patients with BHD, the prevalence of pneumothorax (72.7%) was greater in South Korea than in the rest of the world (50.9%; p = 0.003). The prevalence of skin manifestations (13.6%) and renal tumors (9.1%) was lower in Korea than in the rest of the world, at 47.9% [p < 0.001] and 22.5% [p = 0.027], respectively). This study confirmed a significant prediction model for BHD based on age, number of lung cysts (>40), and maximal diameter of lung cysts (>2 cm) regardless of skin manifestations and renal tumors. This study evaluated the feasibility of deep-learning-based image reconstruction (DLIR) on coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA). By using a 20 cm water phantom, the noise reduction ratio and noise power spectrum were evaluated according to the different reconstruction methods. Then 46 patients who underwent CCTA were retrospectively enrolled. CCTA was performed using the 16 cm coverage axial volume scan technique. All CT images were reconstructed using filtered back projection (FBP); three model-based iterative reconstructions (MBIR) of 40%, 60%, and 80%; and three DLIR algorithms: low (L), medium (M), and high (H). Quantitative and qualitative image qualities of CCTA were compared according to the reconstruction methods. In the phantom study, the noise reduction ratios of MBIR-40%, MBIR-60%, MBIR-80%, DLIR-L, DLIR-M, and DLIR-H were 26.7 ± 0.2%, 39.5 ± 0.5%, 51.7 ± 0.4%, 33.1 ± 0.8%, 43.2 ± 0.8%, and 53.5 ± 0.1%, respectively. The pattern of the noise power spectrum of the DLIR images was more similar to FBP images than MBIR images. In a CCTA study, CCTA yielded a significantly lower noise index with DLIR-H reconstruction than with the other reconstruction methods. DLIR-H showed a higher SNR and CNR than MBIR (p < 0.05). The qualitative image quality of CCTA with DLIR-H was significantly higher than that of MBIR-80% or FBP. The mechanism of premature ventricular complexes (PVC) occurring in the ventricular outflow tract (OT) is related to an intracellular calcium overload and delayed afterdepolarizations that lead to triggered activity. The guidelines recommend using beta-blockers and flecainide for idiopathic PVCs, but they also acknowledge the limited evidence supporting this recommendation. We conducted a multicenter, randomized, open-label pilot study comparing the effect of carvedilol and flecainide on OT PVC, which are widely used to treat this arrhythmia. Patients with a 24 h Holter recording a PVC burden ≥ 5%, which showed positive R waves in leads II, III, and aVF, and without structural heart disease were enrolled. They were randomly assigned to the carvedilol or flecainide group, and the maximum tolerated dose was administered for 12 weeks. A total of 103 participants completed the protocol: 51 with carvedilol and 52 with flecainide. After 12 weeks of treatment, the mean PVC burden significantly decreased in both groups: 20.3 ± 11.5 to 14.6 ± 10.8% with carvedilol (p < 0.0001) and 17.1 ± 9.9 to 6.6 ± 9.9% with flecainide (p < 0.0001). Rotenone, isolated from Derris, Lonchocarpus, and Tephrosia from the family Fabaceae, has been shown to have a variety of biological properties and is used in various agricultural industries as a potent biopesticide. However, recent reports have demonstrated that rotenone has the potential to cause several adverse effects such as a neurodegenerative disease. This study aimed to induce thermolysis of the biopesticide rotenone and enhance the functionality of the degraded products. Rotenone (1) was degraded after autoclaving for 12 h, and the thermolytic reactants showed enhanced anti-inflammatory capacity against nitric oxide (NO) production. The structures of the newly modified products were spectroscopically determined. The thermal reaction products included various isoflavonoid derivatives 2–6, whose structures were characterized as being produced via chemical reactions in rotenone at the C-12 positions. Among the degraded products, (−)-tubaic acid (6) exhibited significantly improved anti-inflammatory effects compared to the original rotenone. Quantitative LC-MS analysis of the major thermolysis products generated in Derris extract containing rotenone was performed using isolate 2–5 purified from autoclaved rotenone. Seven known analogs, along with two previously undescribed lignan derivatives sesamlignans A (1) and B (2), were isolated from a water-soluble extract of the defatted sesame seeds (Sesamum indicum L.) by applying the chromatographic separation method. Structures of compounds 1 and 2 were elucidated based on extensive interpretation of 1D, 2D NMR, and HRFABMS spectroscopic data. The absolute configurations were established by analyzing the optical rotation and circular dichroism (CD) spectrum. Inhibitory effects against the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and peroxynitrite (ONOO−) scavenging assays were performed to evaluate the anti-glycation effects of all isolated compounds. Among the isolated compounds, (1) and (2) showed potent inhibition towards AGEs formation, with IC50 values of 7.5 ± 0.3 and 9.8 ± 0.5 μM, respectively. The adverse effects of UV (ultraviolet) radiation on polymeric materials and organic constituents can damage the molecular structure of human skin and polymeric materials, resulting in their degradation. Therefore, additives or reagents for UV-shielding must be used in related applications, including polymer compounds and skin cosmetics. Bio-based polymers have shown great potential as alternatives to conventional metallic and organic materials (e.g., TiO2 and ZnO) in various applications; therefore, natural products have gained attention as a potential resource to overcome UV-induced health and environmental problems. In particular, biomass-derived materials such as lignin, fiber, and silica have been investigated as UV-shielding materials owing to their biocompatibility, biodegradability, and low carbon emissions. In this review, the UV-shielding effect and potential of various biomass-derived materials, such as silica, nanocellulose, and fibers, are reviewed. Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a multifactorial inflammatory disease of the nose and sinuses that affects more than 10% of the adult population worldwide. Currently, CRS is classified into endotypes according to the inflammatory response (Th1, Th2, and Th17) or the distribution of immune cells in the mucosa (eosinophilic and non-eosinophilic). CRS induces mucosal tissue remodeling. Extracellular matrix (ECM) accumulation, fibrin deposition, edema, immune cell infiltration, and angiogenesis are observed in the stromal region. Conversely, epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT), goblet cell hyperplasia, and increased epithelial permeability, hyperplasia, and metaplasia are found in the epithelium. Fibroblasts synthesize collagen and ECM, which create a structural skeleton of tissue and play an important role in the wound-healing process. Deficiencies in epithelial barrier integrity are involved in the pathogenesis of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS). This study aimed to investigate the role of ephrinA1/ephA2 signaling on sinonasal epithelial permeability and rhinovirus-induced epithelial permeability. This role in the process of epithelial permeability was evaluated by stimulating ephA2 with ephrinA1 and inactivating ephA2 with ephA2 siRNA or inhibitor in cells exposed to rhinovirus infection. EphrinA1 treatment increased epithelial permeability, which was associated with decreased expression of ZO-1, ZO-2, and occludin. These effects of ephrinA1 were attenuated by blocking the action of ephA2 with ephA2 siRNA or inhibitor. Furthermore, rhinovirus infection upregulated the expression levels of ephrinA1 and ephA2, increasing epithelial permeability, which was suppressed in ephA2-deficient cells. These results suggest a novel role of ephrinA1/ephA2 signaling in epithelial barrier integrity in the sinonasal epithelium, suggesting their participation in rhinovirus-induced epithelial dysfunction. Background: This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of pulmonary rehabilitation (PR) on functional performance, exercise-related oxygen saturation, and health-related quality of life among patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). Methods: A total of 25 patients with IPF (13 in the PR group and 12 in the non-PR group) were enrolled between August 2019 and October 2021 at Haeundae-Paik Hospital in the Republic of Korea. A cardiopulmonary exercise test (CPET), six-minute walk test (6MWT), pulmonary function test (PFT), Saint George's Respiratory Questionnaire (SGRQ), muscle strength test, and bioelectrical impedance analysis were performed in each group at baseline and after eight weeks of PR. Results: The mean age was 68 years of age and most subjects were male. Baseline characteristics were similar between the two groups. The distance during 6MWT after PR was significantly improved in the PR group (inter-group p-value = 0.002). VO2max and VE/VCO2 slopes showed a significant difference after eight weeks only in the PR group, but the rate of change did not differ significantly from the non-PR group. Total skeletal muscle mass, PFT variables, and SGRQ scores did not differ significantly between the groups. Conclusions: PR improved exercise capacity, as measured using CPET and 6 MWT. Background: Chest computed tomography (CT) findings are important for identifying Birt–Hogg–Dube (BHD) syndrome. However, the predictive power of classical criteria for chest CT findings is weak. Here, we aimed to identify more specific chest CT findings necessitating genetic examination for FLCN gene mutations. Methods: From June 2016 to December 2017, we prospectively enrolled 21 patients with multiple bilateral and basally located lung cysts on chest CT with no other apparent cause, including cases with and without spontaneous primary pneumothorax. All enrolled patients underwent FLCN mutation testing for diagnosis confirmation. Results: BHD was diagnosed in 10 of 21 enrolled patients (47.6%). There were no differences in clinical features between the BHD and non-BHD groups. Maximal cyst diameter was significantly greater in the BHD group (mean ± standard deviation; 4.1 ± 1.1 cm) than in the non-BHD group (1.6 ± 0.9 cm; p < 0.001). Diversity in cyst size was observed in 100.0% of BHD cases and 18.2% of non-BHD cases (p = 0.001). Morphological diversity was observed in 100.0% of BHD cases and 54.6% of non-BHD cases (p = 0.054). Areas under the receiver operating characteristic curves for predicting FLCN gene mutations were 0.955 and 0.909 for maximal cyst diameter and diversity in size, respectively. The optimal cut-off value for maximal diameter FLCN mutations prediction was 2.1 cm (sensitivity: 99%; specificity: 82%). Conclusions: Reliable chest CT features suggesting the need for FLCN gene mutations screening include variations in cyst size and the presence of cysts > 2.1 cm in diameter, predominantly occurring in the bilateral basal lungs. Crude hydrolytic extracellular enzymes (CHEEs) generated by a mixed culture of microorganisms during fermentation have a high potential as economically feasible biocatalysts for the hydrolysis of complex organic wastes. This study investigates the feasibility of CHEEs as substitutes for commercial enzymes based on a series of anaerobic batch tests for CH4 production fed by pretreated waste activated sludge (WAS). The results showed that cellulase presented the highest CH4 yield of 99.1 mL·CH4/g·COD of WAS among the samples pretreated with single commercial enzymes, with a yield 34% higher than that of the control sample. A higher diversity of commercial enzymes used in the pretreatment led to higher CH4 production from WAS. The sample pretreated with a mixture of four commercial enzymes (amylase + protease + cellulase + lipase, APCL) presented a CH4 yield of 216.0 mL·CH4/g·COD of WAS. The WAS prepared with CHEEs resulted in a CH4 yield of 211.9 mL·CH4/g·COD of WAS, which is comparable to the performance of the sample pretreated with APCL. The results of the batch tests using pretreated WAS for different APCL concentrations showed that the CH4 yield of WAS pretreated with CHEEs was comparable to the CH4 yield of 0.34 g·APCL/g·COD of WAS. It plays an important role in the regulation of the immune response and can be a pathogenic factor in various diseases. Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a complex and heterogeneous disease with various phenotypes and endotypes. Recently, an increasing number of studies have proposed that oxidative stress (caused by both environmental and intrinsic stimuli) plays an important role in the pathogenesis and persistence of CRS. This has attracted the attention of several researchers. The relationship between the presence of reactive oxygen species composed of free radicals and nasal polyp pathology is a key topic receiving attention. The purpose of this study was to identify the hub genes and biological pathways of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) through bioinformatics analysis and potential new therapeutic targets. In this study, three datasets were downloaded from the Gene Expression Omnibus (GEO), and differentially expressed genes (DEGs) between NPC and normal tissues were analyzed using the GEO2R online tool. Volcano and heat maps of the DEGs were visualized using the hiplot database. Gene ontology (GO) and the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses of the upregulated and downregulated DEGs were performed using the DAVID database. Finally, we established a protein-protein interaction (PPI) network using the STRING database and showed the differential expression of hub genes between the normal and tumor tissues. In all, 109,371,221 upregulated DEGs and 139,226,520 downregulated DEGs were obtained in datasets GSE40290, GSE61218, and GSE53819, respectively, and 18 common differential genes, named co-DEGs, were screened in the three datasets. The most abundant biological GO terms of the co-DEGs were inflammatory response et al. The KEGG pathway enrichment analysis showed that co-DEGs mainly participated in the interleukin (IL)-17 signaling pathway et al. Finally, we identified four hub genes using PPI analysis and observed that three of them were highly expressed in tumor tissues. In this study, the hub genes of NPC, such as PTGS2, and pathways such as IL-17 signaling, were identified through bioinformatics analysis, which may be potential new therapeutic targets for NPC. Women with complex atypical hyperplasia (CAH) or early-stage endometrioid endometrial cancer (EEC) are candidates for fertility preservation. The most common approach is progesterone (P4) therapy and deferral of hysterectomy until after completion of childbearing. However, P4 therapy response rates vary, and molecular mechanisms behind P4 resistance are poorly understood. One potential molecular cause of P4 resistance is a loss or attenuation of PGR expression. Mitogen-inducible gene 6 (MIG-6) is critical for P4 responsiveness. MIG-6 protein expression in the endometrial epithelial and stromal cells from women with CAH and EEC was significantly lower compared to women without CAH or EEC. The P4-responsive women (10/15) exhibited an increase of MIG-6 expression in epithelial and stromal cells compared to P4-resistant women (5/15). In addition, immunohistochemical analysis for PGR results showed that stromal PGR levels are significantly higher in P4-responsive women compared to P4-resistant women, whereas epithelial PGR expression was not different. A reverse correlation of MIG-6 and pAKT levels was observed in early-stage EEC patients. Studies strongly suggest that loss of MIG-6 and PGR and activation of pAKT lead to P4 resistance in CAH and EEC. Benthic habitat zonation is described from in situ observations and seabed photographs taken from the coastal area of Weno Island, Chuuk, Micronesia. Habitat groups, types, and boundaries are defined by visible substratum characteristics (i.e., in situ and by digital imaging of photo-quadrats along transect lines), and by cluster and ordination analyses using relative coverage percentage of identified classification categories. The statistical similarity between habitat groups is determined by Analysis of similarity (ANOSIM). Benthic habitat groups with significant influence on the determination of habitat type are isolated by the similarity percentage (SIMPER) test. In addition to the standard practices of using transect lines and collecting data in accordance with the already well-implemented and thoroughly-tested benthic habitat classification scheme for tropical reef monitoring, we applied simple statistics that enable comparative data interpretation. Thermal treatment is simple and has high potential in activated carbon (AC) modification because its functional groups, structures, and pores can be significantly modified. However, the changes in characteristics of ACs, affecting catalytic activity, have not been investigated enough. Therefore, in this study, a coal-based powdered AC (PAC) was thermally treated, characterized, and subjected to the removal of an antibiotic (oxytetracycline, OTC). The PAC treated at 900 °C (PAC900) showed the best OTC removal compared to the PACs treated under lower temperatures via both adsorption and catalytic oxidation in the presence of peroxymonosulfate (PMS). The results of N2 adsorption/desorption, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, and Boehm titration showed increases in basicity, specific surface area, graphitic structures with higher crystallinity and more defects, and C=O in PAC900 compared to PAC. Stronger signals of DMPO-X and TEMP-1O2 were shown for PAC900+PMS compared to PAC+PMS in electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy. It is suggested that a simple thermal treatment can significantly change the characteristics of a PAC, which improves organic micropollutants removal. (1) Background: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the 3-dimensional bony changes of the mandibular condyle in temporomandibular joints-osteoarthritis (TMJ-OA) patients treated with stabilization splint (SS) therapy using shape correspondence analysis. (2) Methods: A total of 27 adult patients (2 men and 25 women) with a mean age of 24.6 ± 3.9 years were included in this study. All patients were diagnosed with TMJ-OA and were treated with an SS. Cone-beam computed tomography data of the condylar head before and after SS therapy from 42 condyles (15 bilateral and 12 unilateral TMJ-OA) were used for the analysis. For the performance shape correspondence analysis (SPHARM-PDM), statistical differences were performed using the one-way analysis of variance and Scheffe post hoc tests. (3) Results: After SS treatment in TMJ-OA patients, bone resorption of the condyle head surface was predominant in the anterosuperior, superolateral, and superior areas, and bone formation was superior in the lateral, medial, posterosuperior, and posteromedial areas. The change in the condylar volume between the two groups was not statistically significant. (4) Conclusions: After SS treatment in TMJ-OA patients, there was both bone resorption and bone formation on the mandibular condyle head surface, which induced morphological changes in the condyle head. Endometriosis is a chronic inflammatory condition in women, and obesity leads to an inflammatory condition that is directly involved in the etiology of endometriosis. However, observational studies have shown an inverse correlation between endometriosis and a low body mass index (BMI). Obesity does not protect against endometriosis, and on the contrary, an increased BMI may lead to more severe forms of the disease. To determine the effect of obesity on endometriosis, diet-induced and genetically engineered obese mouse models were integrated with endometriosis mouse models with fluorescence-tagged ectopic lesions. High-fat diet-induced obese mice revealed a significant increase in endometriosis development compared with regular-diet control mice. However, obese recipient mice with leptin deficiency and leptin receptor deficiency showed suppressed endometriosis development compared with control mice. Furthermore, donor uterine tissues with leptin deficiency and leptin receptor deficiency suppressed endometriosis development compared with control donor in control recipient mice. Importantly, we revealed that aberrant high levels of leptin concentration significantly increased endometriosis development compared with vehicle treatment group in control mice with normal body weight. Background: This study aimed to investigate the associations between sex and the relative effect of rhythm control over rate control in patients with atrial fibrillation. Methods: We used the National Health Insurance Service database to select patients treated for atrial fibrillation within one year after diagnosis. The primary composite outcome comprised cardiovascular death, ischemic stroke, heart failure hospitalization, or acute myocardial infarction. Results: During the mean follow-up (4.9 ± 3.2 years), the benefit of rhythm control over rate control on the primary composite outcome became statistically insignificant after 3 months from atrial fibrillation diagnosis in women while remained steadily until 12 months in men. The risk of primary composite outcome for rhythm control was lower than that for rate control in both sexes if it was initiated within 6 months (men: HR = 0.86, 95%CI = 0.79–0.94; women: HR = 0.85, 95%CI = 0.78–0.93; P for interaction = 0.844). However, there was significant interaction between sex and the relative effect of rhythm control if it was initiated after 6 months (men: HR = 0.72, 95%CI = 0.52–0.99; women: HR = 1.32, 95%CI = 0.92–1.88; P for interaction = 0.018). Conclusion: Rhythm control resulted in lower risk of primary composite outcome than rate control in both sexes; however, the treatment initiation at an earlier stage might be considered in women. Dendritic cells (DCs) are antigen-presenting cells derived from the bone marrow that play an important role in the association between the innate and adaptive immune responses. The onset and development of chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) involve a serious imbalance in immune regulation and mechanical dysfunction caused by an abnormal remodeling process. Recent studies have shown that an increase in DCs in CRS and their function of shaping the nasal mucosal immune response may play an important role in the pathogenesis of CRS. In this review, we discuss DC subsets in mice and humans, as well as the function of DCs in the nasal sinus mucosa. We investigated the effects of derhamnosylmaysin (DM) on adipogenesis and lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. Our data showed that DM inhibited lipid accumulation and adipocyte differentiation in 3T3-L1 cells. Treatment of 3T3-L1 adipocytes with DM decreased the expression of major transcription factors, such as sterol regulatory element-binding protein-1c (SREBP-1c), the CCAAT-enhancer-binding protein (CEBP) family, and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPARγ), in the regulation of adipocyte differentiation. Moreover, the expression of their downstream target genes related to adipogenesis and lipogenesis, including adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (aP2), lipoprotein lipase (LPL), stearyl-CoA-desaturase-1 (SCD-1), acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC), and fatty acid synthase (FAS), was also decreased by treatment with DM during adipogenesis. Additionally, DM attenuated insulin-stimulated phosphorylation of Akt. These results first demonstrated that DM inhibited adipogenesis and lipogenesis through downregulation of the key adipogenic transcription factors SREBP-1c, the CEBP family, and PPARγ and inactivation of the major adipogenesis signaling factor Akt, which is intermediated in insulin. A growing body of work suggests epigenetic dysregulation contributes to endometriosis pathophysiology and female infertility. The chromatin remodeling complex subunit AT-rich interaction domain 1A (ARID1A) must be properly expressed to maintain normal uterine function. Endometrial epithelial ARID1A is indispensable for pregnancy establishment in mice through regulation of endometrial gland function; however, ARID1A expression is decreased in infertile women with endometriosis. We hypothesized that ARID1A performs critical operations in the endometrial epithelium necessary for fertility besides maintaining gland function. To identify alterations in uterine gene expression resulting from loss of epithelial ARID1A, we performed RNA-sequencing analysis on pre-implantation uteri from LtfiCre/+Arid1af/f and control mice. Differential expression analysis identified 4181 differentially expressed genes enriched for immune-related ingenuity canonical pathways including agranulocyte adhesion and diapedesis and natural killer cell signaling. RT-qPCR confirmed an increase in pro-inflammatory cytokine and macrophage-related gene expression but a decrease in natural killer cell signaling. Immunostaining confirmed a uterus-specific increase in macrophage infiltration. Flow cytometry delineated an increase in inflammatory macrophages and a decrease in uterine dendritic cells in LtfiCre/+Arid1af/f uteri. These findings demonstrate a role for endometrial epithelial ARID1A in suppressing inflammation and maintaining uterine immune homeostasis, which are required for successful pregnancy and gynecological health. Chronic rhinosinusitis is a chronic inflammatory disease of the upper airways, for which treatment options include medical or surgical therapy. However, there are limitations to conservative treatment strategies, such as the relapse of nasal polyps. In this review, we discuss the rising role of biomolecular mechanisms associated with various biologics that have been approved or are undergoing clinical trials to treat chronic rhinosinusitis. Nasal drug delivery is advantageous when compared with other routes of drug delivery as it avoids the hepatic first-pass effect, blood–brain barrier penetration, and compliance issues with parenteral administration. However, nasal administration also has some limitations, such as its low bioavailability due to metabolism on the mucosal surface, and irreversible damage to the nasal mucosa due to the ingredients added into the formula. Moreover, the method of nasal administration is not applicable to all drugs. The current review presents the nasal anatomy and mucosal environment for the nasal delivery of vaccines and drugs, as well as presents various methods for enhancing nasal absorption, and different drug carriers and delivery devices to improve nasal drug delivery. A two-step process using colloid milling (CM) and hot water (HW) treatment was evaluated for its ability to improve xylose recovery and the enzymatic digestibility of oak wood. In the first step, CM pretreatment was applied at a milling (feeding) speed of 100 mL/min with four different milling times (3, 6, 9, and 12 h), and the enzymatic digestibility and physical properties of each substrate were measured. In the second-step, the HW pretreatment was applied to enhance the enzymatic digestibility and xylan recovery at various reaction severities (Log R0) from 2.07 to 4.43 using 12 h colloid-milled (CM-treated) oak wood. Compared with untreated oak wood, CM not only significantly disrupted the structure of oak wood but also increased its Brunauer–Emmett–Teller surface area (42-fold) and pore volume (28-fold). The crystallinity of two-step-treated oak wood was decreased to 34.8, while the enzymatic digestibility of 12 h CM-treated oak wood was increased to 58.1% at enzyme loading of 30 filter paper units (FPU)/g glucan for 96 h. After HW treatment of CM-treated oak wood at Log R0 = 3.83, 80.7% of xylan recovery yield and 91.1% of enzymatic digestibility (with 15 FPU/g glucan at 96 h) was obtained, which was 84.2% higher than the enzymatic digestibility of untreated oak wood (6.9%). Featured Application: Quantitative optical coherence tomography (OCT) promises a noninvasive method for longitudinal monitoring of postnatal retinal development. A better study of postnatal retinal development is essential for the in-depth understanding of the nature of the vision system. To date, quantitative analysis of postnatal retinal development is primarily limited to endpoint histological examination. This study is to validate in vivo optical coherence tomography (OCT) for longitudinal monitoring of postnatal retinal development in developing mouse eyes. OCT images of C57BL/6J mice were recorded from postnatal day (P) 14 to P56. Three-dimensional (3D) frame registration and super averaging were adopted to investigate the fine structure of the retina. Quantitative OCT analysis revealed distinct outer and inner retinal layer changes, corresponding to eye development. At the outer retina, external limiting membrane (ELM) and ellipsoid zone (EZ) band intensities gradually increased with aging, and the IZ band was detectable by P28. At the inner retina, a hyporeflective layer (HRL) between the nerve fiber layer (NFL) and inner plexiform layer (IPL) was observed in developing eyes and gradually disappeared with aging. Further image analysis revealed individual RGCs within the HRL layer of the young mouse retina. However, RGCs were merged with the NFL and the IPL in the aged mouse retina. Moreover, the sub-IPL layer structure was observed to be gradually enhanced with aging. This study proposes a new method to generate a three-dimensional (3D) geometric representation of an indoor environment by refining and processing an indoor point cloud data (PCD) captured through backpack laser scanners. The proposed algorithm comprises two parts to generate the 3D geometric representation: data refinement and data processing. In the refinement section, the inputted indoor PCD are roughly segmented by applying random sample consensus (RANSAC) to raw data based on an estimated normal vector. Next, the 3D geometric representation is generated by calculating and separating tangent points on segmented PCD. This study proposes a robust algorithm that utilizes the topological feature of the indoor PCD created by a hierarchical data process. The algorithm minimizes the size and the uncertainty of raw PCD caused by the absence of a global navigation satellite system and equipment errors. Acute peripheral facial palsy (APFP), including Bell's palsy and Ramsay Hunt syndrome, is a disease that affects daily life through facial motor dysfunction, causing psychological problems. Various tests to evaluate prognosis have been studied; however, there are no validated predictive biomarkers to guide clinical decision making. Therefore, specific biomarkers that respond to treatment are required to understand prognostic outcomes. In this review, we discuss existing literature regarding the role of APFP biomarkers in prognosis and recovery. We searched the PubMed, EMBASE, and Cochrane Library databases for relevant papers. Our screening identified relevant studies and biomarkers correlating with the identification of predictive biomarkers. Only studies published between January 2000 and October 2021 were included. Our search identified 5835 abstracts, of which 35 were selected. All biomarker samples were obtained from blood and were used in the evaluation of disease severity and prognosis associated with recovery. These biomarkers have been effective prognostic or predictive factors under various conditions. Finally, we classified them into five categories. There is no consensus in the literature on the correlation between outcomes and prognostic factors for APFP. Furthermore, the correlation between hematologic laboratory values and APFP prognosis remains unclear. However, it is important to identify new methods for improving the accuracy of facial paralysis prognosis prediction. Therefore, we systematically evaluated prognostic and potentially predictive APFP biomarkers. Unfortunately, a predictive biomarker validating APFP prognosis remains unknown. The pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis is associated with genetic, environmental, and epigenetic factors. Genotyping of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) is an advanced technique in the field of molecular genetics that is closely correlated with genome-wide association studies (GWASs) in large population groups with allergic diseases. Many recent studies have paid attention to the role of epigenetics, including alteration of DNA methylation, histone acetylation, and miRNA levels in the pathogenesis of allergic rhinitis. In this review article, genetics and epigenetics of allergic rhinitis, including information regarding functions and significance of previously known and newly-discovered genes, are summarized. A shape memory polymer was prepared by melt mixing a semicrystalline maleated polyolefin elastomer (mPOE) with a small amount of polyaniline (PANI) (up to 15 wt.%) in an internal mixer. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM), FTIR analysis, DMA, DSC, melt rheological analysis, and a tensile test were performed to characterize the structure and properties of the mPOE/PANI blends. The results revealed that the blends form a physically crosslinked network via the grafting of PANI onto the mPOE chains, and the PANI dispersed at the nanometer scale in the POE matrix served as a photo-thermal agent and provided increased crosslinking points. These structural features enabled the blends to exhibit a shape memory effect upon near-infrared (NIR) light irradiation. With increasing PANI content, the shape recovery rate of the blend under NIR stimulation was improved and reached 96% at 15 wt.% of PANI. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The diagnosis of leptomeningeal metastasis (LM) is often difficult due to the paucity of cancer cells in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and nonspecific findings on neuroimaging. Investigations of extracellular microRNAs (miRNAs) in CSF could be used for both the diagnosis and study of LM pathogenesis because they reflect the activity of disseminating cancer cells. We isolated CSF extracellular miRNAs from patients (n = 65) of different central nervous system tumor statuses, including cancer control, healthy control, LM, brain metastasis (BM), and primary brain tumor (BT) groups, and performed miRNA microarrays. In unsupervised clustering analyses, all LM and two BM samples showed unique profiles. Among 30 miRNAs identified for LM-specific biomarkers via a Prediction Analysis of Microarrays, miR-335-5p and miR-34b-3p were confirmed in both the discovery and validation samples (n = 23). Next, we performed a significance analysis of the microarray (SAM) to extract discriminative miRNA profiles of two selected CSF groups, with LM samples revealing a greater number of discriminative miRNAs than BM and BT samples compared to controls. Using SAM comparisons between LM and BM samples, we identified 30 upregulated and 6 downregulated LM miRNAs. To reduce bias from different primary cancers, we performed a subset analysis with primary non-small cell lung cancer, and 12 of 13 upregulated miRNAs in LM vs. BM belonged to the upregulated miRNAs in LM. We identified possible target genes and their biological processes that could be affected by LM discriminative miRNAs in NSCLC using the gene ontology database. In conclusion, we identified a unique extracellular miRNA profile in LM CSF that was different from BM, suggesting the use of miRNAs as LM biomarkers in studies of LM pathogenesis. Simple Summary: Non-invasive quantification of radiation-induced damage is an important factor in radiation therapy to maximize radiation dose to cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Development of imaging biomarkers to assess post-RT effects accurately at an early stage is important for better prognosis and to individualize the management of brain tumors. Recent MR-based electrical conductivity imaging provides novel contrast information based on the concentration and mobility of ions constituting tissue and can exhibit high sensitivity in quantifying the therapeutic effect of ionizing radiation used in cancer treatment. This study suggests that the change in conductivity at different doses can provide a way to quantify the response of the tissue to irradiation, and the variation in conductivity with the elapsed time shows potential as a tool to monitor the therapeutic effect of radiation. Radiation-induced injury is damage to normal tissues caused by unintentional exposure to ionizing radiation. Image-based evaluation of tissue damage by irradiation has an advantage for the early assessment of therapeutic effects by providing sensitive information on minute tissue responses in situ. Recent magnetic resonance (MR)-based electrical conductivity imaging has shown potential as an effective early imaging biomarker for treatment response and radiation-induced injury. However, to be a tool for evaluating therapeutic effects, validation of its reliability and sensitivity according to various irradiation conditions is required. We performed MR-based electrical conductivity imaging on designed phantoms to confirm the effect of ionizing radiation at different doses and on in vivo mouse brains to distinguish tissue response depending on different doses and the elapsed time after irradiation. To quantify the irradiation effects, we measured the absolute conductivity of brain tissues and calculated relative conductivity changes based on the value of pre-irradiation. The conductivity of the phantoms with the distilled water and saline solution increased linearly with the irradiation doses. The conductivity of in vivo mouse brains showed different time-course variations and residual contrast depending on the irradiation doses.
