The valorization and dissolution of lignin using ionic liquids (ILs) is critical for developing sustainable biorefineries and a circular bioeconomy. This review aims to critically assess the current state of computational and machine learning methods for understanding and optimizing IL-based lignin dissolution and valorization processes reported since 2022. The paper examines various computational approaches, from quantum chemistry to machine learning, highlighting their strengths, limitations, and recent advances in predicting and optimizing lignin-IL interactions. Key themes include the challenges in accurately modeling lignin's complex structure, the development of efficient screening methodologies for ionic liquids to enhance lignin dissolution and valorization processes, and the integration of machine learning with quantum calculations. These computational advances will drive progress in IL-based lignin valorization by providing deeper molecular-level insights and facilitating the rapid screening of novel IL-lignin systems. New asphalt mixtures have been improved by using fibers (polypropylene, polyester, asbestos, carbon, glass, nylon, lignin, coconut, sisal, recycled rubber, PET, wood, bamboo, and cellulose), reducing the temperature and compaction energy for their collocation, minimizing the impact on the environment, increasing the tenacity and resistance to cracking of hot mix asphalt (HMA), preventing asphalt drainage in a Stone Mastic Asphalt (SMA). Hence, this paper aims to evaluate the influence of the chemical (lignin content, ash, viscosity, degree of polymerization, and elemental analysis), morphological (SEM), spectroscopic (FTIR-ATR and XRD), and calorimetric (ATG and DSC) properties of celluloses from bagasse Agave tequilana Weber var. Azul (ABP), corrugated paperboard (CPB) and commercial cellulose fiber (CC) as Schellenberg drainage (D) inhibitors of the SMA. The ABP was obtained through a chemical process by alkaline cooking, while CPB by a mechanical refining process. The chemical, morphological, spectroscopic, and calorimetric properties were similar among the analyzed celluloses, but CPB and ABP cellulose are excellent alternatives to CC cellulose for inhibiting drainage. However, CPB is the most effective at low concentrations. Lignin has long been regarded as waste, readily separated and discarded from the pulp and paper industry. However, as the most abundant aromatic renewable biopolymer in nature, lignin can replace petroleum resources to prepare chemicals containing benzene rings. Therefore, the high-value transformation of lignin has attracted the interest of both academia and industry. Nitrogen-containing compounds and functionalized materials are a class of compounds that have wide applications in chemistry, materials science, energy storage, and other fields. Converting lignin into nitrogenous chemicals and materials is a high-value utilization pathway. Currently, there is a large amount of literature exploring the conversion of lignin. However, a comprehensive review of the transformation of lignin to nitrogenous compounds is lacking. The research progress of lignin conversion to nitrogenous chemicals and functional materials is reviewed in this article. This article provides an overview of the chemical structure and types of industrial lignin, methods of lignin modification, as well as nitrogen-containing chemicals and functional materials prepared from various types of lignin, including their applications in wastewater treatment, slow-release fertilizer, adhesive, coating, and biomedical fields. In addition, the challenges and limitations of nitrogenous lignin-based materials encountered during the development of applications are also discussed. Lignin valorisation into chemicals and fuels is of great importance in addressing energy challenges and advancing biorefining in a sustainable manner. In this study, on the basis of the high microwave absorption performance of carbon nanotubes (CNTs), a series of copper-oxide-loaded CNT catalysts (CuO/CNT) were developed to facilitate the oxidative depolymerization of lignin under microwave heating. This catalyst can promote the activation of hydrogen peroxide and air, effectively generating a range of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Through the application of electron paramagnetic resonance techniques, these ROS generated under different oxidation conditions were detected to elucidate the oxidation mechanism. The results demonstrate that the •OH and O2•− play a crucial role in the formation of aldehyde and ketone products through the cleavage of lignin Cβ-O and Cα-Cβ bonds. We further evaluated the catalytic performance of the CuO/CNT catalysts with three typical lignin feedstocks to determine their applicability for lignin biorefinery. The bio-enzymatic lignin produced a 13.9% monophenol yield at 200 °C for 20 min under microwave heating, which was higher than the 7% yield via hydrothermal heating conversion. The selectivity of G-/H-/S-type products was slightly affected, while lignin substrate had a noticeable effect on the selective production. Overall, this study explored the structural characteristics of CuO/CNT catalysts and their implications for lignin conversion and offered an efficient oxidation approach that holds promise for sustainable biorefining practices. This article explores the important, and yet often overlooked, solid-state structures of selected bioaromatic compounds commonly found in lignin hydrogenolysis oil, a renewable bio-oil that holds great promise to substitute fossil-based aromatic molecules in a wide range of chemical and material industrial applications. At first, single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) was applied to the lignin model compounds, dihydroconiferyl alcohol, propyl guaiacol, and eugenol dimers, in order to elucidate the fundamental molecular interactions present in such small lignin-derived polyols. Then, considering the potential use of these lignin-derived molecules as building blocks for polymer applications, structural analysis was also performed for two chemically modified model compounds, i.e., the methylene-bridging propyl-guaiacol dimer and propyl guaiacol and eugenol glycidyl ethers, which can be used as precursors in phenolic and epoxy resins, respectively, thus providing additional information on how the molecular packing is altered following chemical modifications. In addition to the expected H-bonding interactions, other interactions such as π–π stacking and C–H∙∙∙π were observed. This resulted in unexpected trends in the tendencies towards the crystallization of lignin compounds. This was further explored with the aid of DSC analysis and CLP intermolecular energy calculations, where the relationship between the major interactions observed in all the SCXRD solid-state structures and their physico-chemical properties were evaluated alongside other non-crystallizable lignin model compounds. Beyond lignin model compounds, our findings could also provide important insights into the solid-state structure and the molecular organization of more complex lignin fragments, paving the way to the more efficient design of lignin-based materials with improved properties for industrial applications or improving downstream processing of lignin oils in biorefining processes, such as in enhancing the separation and isolation of specific bioaromatic compounds). The preparation of traditional wood-based panels mostly uses adhesives such as urea-formaldehyde resin and phenolic resin, which not only consumes petrochemical resources but also releases formaldehyde, posing potential health risks to the human body. Lignin, a natural adhesive in plant cells, is characterized by high reactivity, and it is expected to aid in the development of a new generation of green formaldehyde-free adhesives. However, current studies of lignin adhesives have revealed that while strides have been made in reducing formaldehyde emissions, its residual presence remains a concern, an issue which is compounded by inadequate water resistance. Dehydrogenated Polymer (DHP) has a lignin-like structure and good water resistance, offering a new option for the development of formaldehyde-free adhesives. In this paper, DHP and glucuronic acid were reacted with each other in a simulated hot-pressing environment to obtain DHP-glucuronic acid complex, and then the structure of the complex was characterized by infrared nuclear magnetic resonance to verify whether DHP can be efficiently connected with hemicellulose components under hot-pressing conditions. The results showed that the thermal condensation reaction of DHP and glucuronic acid can generate ester bonds at the Cα position in a simulated hot-pressing environment. This paper explores the thermal condensation mechanism of DHP and glucuronic acid, which is helpful for understanding the bonding process between adhesives and components of wood-based panels in the hot-pressing process, and provides key theoretical support for the design of more sustainable lignin adhesives. A first-order kinetic model for the simultaneous anaerobic–aerobic degradation of municipal solid waste (MSW) is presented in the study. The model incorporates the effect of oxygen concentration on anaerobic degradation, enabling the coexistence of anaerobic and aerobic processes within specific oxygen ranges. The model can thoroughly consider the impacts of temperature, moisture content, oxygen concentration, and free air space (FAS) on the degradation rates of five substrates, i.e., holocellulose, non-cellulosic sugars, proteins, lipids, and lignin. The model was successfully verified against two experimental results. The sequential model underestimates both compression strain and degradation ratio, with peak underestimation ratios of 8.7% and 9.2%, respectively. Using the simultaneous model, the effects of anaerobic age, temperature, and aeration rate on landfill aerobic remediation efficacy are quantitatively assessed. Two evaluation criteria, namely the advance rate of aerobic remediation stabilization time (Rt) and the degradation rate after 100 days of aerobic remediation ( λ 100 a ), are adopted. The results indicate the following: (1) Rt is more sensitive to anaerobic age and temperature, while λ 100 a is more affected by anaerobic age and aeration rate; (2) under optimal conditions, Rt and λ 100 a can reach 86.3% and 70.9%, respectively. The present model provides a crucial theoretical framework for evaluating aerobic remediation effectiveness in both anaerobic sanitary landfills and informal landfills, offering valuable insights for practical implementation and management. Postharvest ethylene accumulation and lignification are significant issues affecting the storage quality of fresh faba beans, resulting in rapid quality decline. However, there is still a lack of effective preservation methods to preserve the quality of faba beans during storage. This study aimed to investigate the regulation of lignification in faba beans during storage using a high-efficiency ethylene remover (HEER), examining physiological responses, key enzyme activities, and transcriptomic changes. Results showed that the HEER treatment inhibited the lignification, reducing it by 45% and lowering the respiratory rate of fresh pods by 32.8% during storage. Additionally, the HEER treatment suppressed respiration rates and the activities of lignin synthesis-related enzymes, including phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (from 353.73 to 246.60 U/g), cinnamic acid-4-hydroxylase (from 635.86 to 125.00 U/g), 4-coumarate: coenzyme A ligase (from 1008.57 to 516.52 U/g), and cinnamyl-alcohol dehydrogenase (from 129.42 to 37.12 U/g), thus slowing lignin accumulation. During storage, the hardness of fresh faba bean increased by 9.79% from the initial period, being 1.44 times higher than that of HEER. On days 8 and 16 of storage, the respiratory rate of the treated beans decreased by 24.38% and 4.12%, respectively. Physiological and enzyme activity analyses indicated that HEER treatment-induced increase in hardness was associated with the phenylpropanoid metabolic pathway. Moreover, the HEER significantly down-regulated the expression of several key genes, namely FaPAL, FaC4H, and FaCAD. The cultivation of horticultural plants in controlled greenhouse environments is a pivotal practice in modern agriculture, offering the potential to enhance crop productivity and mitigate climate change effects. This study investigates the biomechanical properties and lignin content of various Capsicum annuum mutant lines—'fragile-plant' (frx), 'tortuous internodi' (tti), and 'puffy-structured stem' (pfi)—in comparison to a commercially established variety, 'Garai Fehér'. We employed the acetyl bromide method to quantify lignin content and conducted three-point bending tests to assess rigidity in three distinct regions of the stem. Gene expression analysis of key lignin biosynthetic pathway genes (PAL, C4H, 4CL, CCoAOMT, CAD) was performed using qRT-PCR. The results revealed significant differences in lignin content and breaking force among the genotypes and stem regions. The tti mutants exhibited similar lignin content to the control but lower breaking strength, likely due to elongated internodes. The frx mutants showed uniformly reduced lignin content, correlating with their fragile stems. The pfi mutants displayed abnormally high lignin content in the top region yet demonstrated the lowest stem rigidity in every region. Overexpression of CAD and CCoAOMT was detected in the mutants in specific regions of the stem, suggesting alterations in lignin biosynthesis; however, we could not confirm the correlation between them. Coal water slurry (CWS) has been considered a cleaner and sustainable alternative to coal. However, the challenging suspension of coal particles in CWS has created a major obstacle to its use in industry. This study presents a novel approach to enhance the stability and rheological properties of coal water slurry (CWS) through the utilization of carboxyalkylated lignin (CL) as a dispersant. The generated CL samples had high water solubility of around 9 g/L and a charge density of around 2 mmol/g. All CLs were able to stabilize the coal suspension, and their performance decreased due to the increase in the alkyl chain length of carboxyalkylated lignin. Carboxymethylated lignin (CL-1) improved the stability of the coal suspensions with the lowest instability index of less than 0.6. The addition of CLs reduced the contact angle of the coal surface from 45.3° to 34.6°, and the increase in the alkyl chain length hampered its effect on contact angle changes. The zeta potential measurements confirmed that the adsorption of CL enhanced the electrostatic repulsion between coal particles in suspensions, and the zeta potential decreased with the increased alkyl chain length of CLs due to increased steric hindrance. The rheology results indicated that CLs demonstrated shear thinning behavior. This innovative method showcases the affinity of carboxyalkylated lignin to improve the performance of CWS, offering an environmentally friendly alternative for producing a cleaner product, i.e., sustainable coal water slurry, with improved suspension stability. Highlights: The lignin in paddy and wheat straws is highly resistant to degradation, and burning the same is a global warming issue. Dye degrading ability and expression of three vp genes were studied in Pleurotus ostreatus and Fusarium sp. cultures. High enzymatic activity and the vp2 gene were observed in the Fusarium sp. culture, which makes it an alternate fungal species for lignin degradation. Lignocellulosic biomass is contemplated to be an inexpensive and copious feedstock that can be used for numerous industrial applications. However, lignin forms the lignin sheath and provides a physical barrier to enzymatic hydrolysis. In addition, lignin physically blocks cellulase, preventing it from being combined with the substrate in a process known as non-productive binding. Therefore, the depletion of lignin is a crucial method for obtaining fermentable sugars from the lignocellulosic biomass. Different white-rot fungi secrete different sets of lignin-mineralizing enzymes and each fungus secretes one or more of the three enzymes essential for lignin degradation. Among efficient redox enzymes, versatile peroxidase is extensively studied for its ability to degrade aromatics without the need for a mediator or polyvalent catalytic site. However, the presence of versatile peroxidase in F. spp. has not been studied. This study was planned with the objective of screening and comparing the production of versatile peroxidase enzymes from F. spp. and a standard culture of Pleurotus ostreatus MTCC-142. These fungal strains were first screened on solid media containing tannic acid, malachite green, or bromocresol green. The potency index for the tannic acid, malachite green, and bromocresol green on the 16th day of incubation was reported to be 1.28, 1.07, 1.09, and 1.10, respectively. Versatile peroxidase production patterns were investigated under solid state fermentation conditions for a period of 25 days at different temperatures ranging from 10 to 35 °C. The highest versatile peroxidase activity (592 UL−1) in F. sp. was observed at 30 °C after the 7th day of incubation. The molecular confirmation showed the presence of the vp gene in F. sp. along with Pleurotus ostreatus MTCC-142. The results determined that F. sp. possesses a versatile peroxidase enzyme and is able to degrade lignin efficiently, and thus it could be utilized as an alternative to other ligninolytic enzyme-producing fungi. Lignin, the earth's second-most abundant biopolymer after cellulose, has long been relegated to low-value byproducts in the pulp and paper industry. However, recent advancements in valorization are transforming lignin into a sustainable and versatile feedstock for producing high-value biofuels, bioplastics, and specialty chemicals. This review explores the conversion of lignin's complex structure, composed of syringyl (S), guaiacyl (G), and p-hydroxyphenyl (H) units, into value-added products. We critically assess various biochemical and analytical techniques employed for comprehensive lignin characterization. Additionally, we explore strategies for lignin upgrading and functionalization to enhance its suitability for advanced biomaterials. The review emphasizes key areas of lignin valorization, including catalytic depolymerization methods, along with the associated challenges and advancements. We discuss its potential as a feedstock for diverse products such as biofuels, bioplastics, carbon fibers, adhesives, and phenolic compounds. Furthermore, the review briefly explores lignin's inherent properties as a UV protectant and antioxidant, alongside its potential for incorporation into polymer blends and composites. By presenting recent advancements and case studies from the literature, this review highlights the significant economic and environmental benefits of lignin valorization, including waste reduction, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and decreased reliance on non-renewable resources. Finally, we address future perspectives and challenges associated with achieving large-scale, techno-economically feasible, and environmentally sustainable lignin valorization. Lignin, one of Earth's most abundant biopolymers, is rich in phenolic and aliphatic functional groups, offering significant potential for chemical modification. Technical lignin, a byproduct of the kraft process, is produced in large quantities annually and can be used to enhance the properties of polymer matrices such as polypropylene (PP). PP, a widely used nonpolar polymer, suffers from low surface free energy, leading to poor adhesion properties. Combining PP with polar, renewable-source polymers like lignin can improve these properties. This study investigates the direct acetylation of kraft lignin (KL) to improve its dispersion in the PP matrix and enhance wettability and adhesion. The acetylation of KL was confirmed through FTIR and DSC analyses. PP and acetylated KL (AKL) were combined and processed via continuous extrusion. The blends' thermal and mechanical properties, lignin dispersion, and wettability were evaluated. Additionally, PP and PP–lignin films were bonded to aluminized biaxially oriented polypropylene (BOPP) for peel tests. Results showed increased surface free energy and improved adhesion, particularly in samples with AKL due to better dispersion. This direct acetylation route significantly enhances PP's surface free energy and adhesion, presenting a sustainable alternative to fossil-based materials and promoting the use of lignin, a renewable and low-cost polymer. Simple Summary: Phenylalanine/tyrosine ammonia-lyase (PTAL) is a bifunctional enzyme that can deaminate both phenylalanine and tyrosine. To explore the efficiency of lignin biosynthesis with the bifunctional enzyme, we applied a comparable experimental system consisting of transgenic and non-transgenic Arabidopsis and crop-weedy rice hybrid (CWRH) lineages to analyze lignin-biosynthesis associated metabolites. We found substantial increases in EPSPS gene expression, phenylalanine and tyrosine contents, total lignin and its monolignols (lignin units), and biomass in the experimental materials. Importantly, these results demonstrated that overexpressing the EPSPS genes in Arabidopsis and CWRH lineages increased phenylalanine and tyrosine levels, which significantly promoted lignin biosynthesis and biomass production in the transgenic CWRH lineages serve as a sink for plant carbon fixation. These findings are important for a better understanding of the PAL and PTAL's functions in different plant species, in addition to efficient carbon fixation by genetic engineering in plants. Lignin is a key metabolite for terrestrial plants. Two types of aromatic amino acids, phenylalanine (Phe) and tyrosine (Tyr), serve as the precursors for lignin biosynthesis. In most plant species, Phe is deaminated by Phe ammonia-lyase (PAL) to initiate lignin biosynthesis, but in grass species, Phe and Tyr are deaminated by Phe/Tyr ammonia-lyase (PTAL). To understand the efficiency of PAL and PTAL, we used transgenic and non-transgenic Arabidopsis with PAL and crop-weedy rice hybrids (CWRH) with PTAL to analyze lignin-biosynthesis-associated metabolites. The transgenic plants overexpressed the exogenous 5-enolpyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS) gene, whereas the non-transgenic plants normally expressed the endogenous EPSPS gene. Our results show significantly increased Phe/Tyr contents in transgenic Arabidopsis and CWRH plants, leading to substantially increased lignin and biomass. In addition, the PTAL pathway promotes a much greater proportion of increased lignin and biomass in transgenic CWRH than in transgenic Arabidopsis lineages. Evidently, more efficient lignin biosynthesis characterized the grass species possessing the PTAL pathway. These findings are important for a better understanding of the PAL and PTAL's functions in the phenylpropanoid metabolic pathways in the evolution of plant species. These findings also have great value for implications such as effective carbon fixation by enhancing lignin biosynthesis through genetic engineering of their key genes in appropriately selected plant species. UV-B stress destroys the photosynthetic system of Rhododendron chrysanthum Pall. (R. chrysanthum), as manifested by the decrease of photosynthetic efficiency and membrane fluidity, and also promotes the accumulation of lignin. The MYB (v-myb avian myeloblastosis viral oncogene homolog) family of transcription factors can be involved in the response to UV-B stress through the regulation of lignin biosynthesis. This study indicated that both the donor and recipient sides of the R. chrysanthum were significantly damaged based on physiological index measurements made using OJIP curves under UV-B stress. The analysis of bioinformatics data revealed that the RcTRP5 transcription factor exhibits upregulation of acetylation at the K68 site, directly regulating the biosynthesis of lignin. Additionally, there was upregulation of the K43 site and downregulation of the K83 site of the CAD enzyme, as well as upregulation of the K391 site of the PAL enzyme. Based on these findings, we conjectured that the RcTRP5 transcription factor facilitates acetylation modification of both enzymes, thereby indirectly influencing the biosynthesis of lignin. This study demonstrated that lignin accumulation can alleviate the damage caused by UV-B stress to R. chrysanthum, which provides relevant ideas for improving lignin content in plants, and also provides a reference for the study of the metabolic regulation mechanism of other secondary substances. Although lignin is a plentiful biomass resource, it continually exists as an underutilized component of biomass material. Elemental sulfur is another abundant yet underutilized commodity produced as a by-product resulting from the refining of fossil fuels. The current study presents a strategy for preparing five durable composites via a simple one-pot synthesis involving the reaction of lignin oil and elemental sulfur. These lignin oil–sulfur composites LOSx@T (where x = wt. % sulfur, ranging from 80 to 90, and T represents the reaction temperature in °C) were prepared via the reaction of elemental sulfur and lignin oil (LO) with elemental sulfur. The resulting composites could be remelted and reshaped several times without the loss of mechanical strength. Mechanical, thermal, and morphological studies showed that LOSx@T possesses properties competitive with some mechanical properties of commercial building materials, exhibiting favorable compressive strengths (22.1–35.9 MPa) and flexural strengths (5.7–6.5 MPa) exceeding the values required for many construction applications of ordinary Portland cement (OPC) and brick formulations. While varying the amount of organic material did not result in a notable difference in mechanical strength, increasing the reaction temperature from 230 to 300 °C resulted in a significant increase in compressive strength. The results reported herein reveal potential applications of both lignin and waste sulfur during the ongoing effort toward developing recyclable and sustainable building materials. Agricultural mulching is an important input for modern agricultural production and plays an important role in guaranteeing food security worldwide. At present, polyethylene (PE) mulching is still commonly used in agricultural production in most countries around the world, which is non-biodegradable, and years of mulching have caused serious agricultural white pollution. Lignin is one of the three major components of plant cell walls, and it is also the main renewable natural aromatic compounds in nature. Lignin-based composite film materials are green, biodegradable, and show good prospects for development in the field of agricultural mulch. This paper introduces the types, structure, and application status of lignin, summarizes the preparation of lignin-based composite film materials and its latest research progress, focuses on the types, preparation methods, and application examples of lignin-based agricultural mulching, and looks forward to the future development prospects of lignin-based agricultural mulching. The massive consumption of fossil fuels has led to the serious accumulation of carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere and global warming. Bioconversion technologies that utilize biomass resources to produce chemical products are becoming widely accepted and highly recognized. The world is heavily dependent on petroleum-based products, which may raise serious concerns about future environmental security. Most commercially available epoxy resins (EPs) are synthesized by the condensation of bisphenol A (BPA), which not only affects the human endocrine system and metabolism, but is also costly to produce and environmentally polluting. In some cases, straw tar-based epoxy resins have been recognized as potential alternatives to bisphenol A-based epoxy resins, and are receiving increasing attention due to their important role in overcoming the above problems. Using straw tar and lignin as the main raw materials, phenol derivatives were extracted from the middle tar instead of bisphenol A. Bio-based epoxy resins were prepared by replacing epichlorohydrin with epoxylated lignin to press carbon fiber sheets, which is a kind of bio-based fine chemical product. This paper reviews the research progress of bio-based materials such as lignin modification, straw pyrolysis, lignin epoxidation, phenol derivative extraction, and synthesis of epoxy resin. It improves the performance of carbon fiber-reinforced plastic (CFRP) while taking into account the ecological and environmental protection, so that the epoxy resin is developed in the direction of non-toxic, harmless and high-performance characteristics, and it also provides a new idea for the development of bio-based carbon fibers. As the only natural source of aromatic biopolymers, lignin can be converted into value-added chemicals and biofuels, showing great potential in realizing the development of green chemistry. At present, lignin is predominantly used for combustion to generate energy, and the real value of lignin is difficult to maximize. Accordingly, the depolymerization of lignin is of great significance for its high-value utilization. This review discusses the latest progress in the field of lignin depolymerization, including catalytic conversion systems using various thermochemical, chemocatalytic, photocatalytic, electrocatalytic, and biological depolymerization methods, as well as the involved reaction mechanisms and obtained products of various protocols, focusing on green and efficient lignin depolymerization strategies. In addition, the challenges faced by lignin depolymerization are also expounded, putting forward possible directions of developing lignin depolymerization strategies in the future. With the world population rising, wheat straw production is expected to reach 687–740 million tons per year by 2050. Its frequent application as a fuel source leads to air, water, and soil pollution. Limited literature exists on methods for separating components of residual wheat straw. Optimal conditions for organosolv pulping of hydrolyzed wheat straw include 3% FeCl3·6H2O as a catalyst, a biomass-to-solvent ratio of 1:15 (m/v), and 50% ethanol:water as cooking liquor at 200 °C for 30 min. Desilication conditions involve extraction with 7.5% Na2CO3 at a biomass-to-solvent ratio of 1:20 (m/v) treated at 115 °C for 60 min. Lignin from hydrolyzed wheat straw showed similar properties to organosolv lignin from untreated straw, with minimal lignin alteration during hydrolysis. Hydrolysis significantly degraded cellulose. A 41% lignin recovery rate with 95% purity was achieved from pre-extracted hydrolyzed straw. Recovered cellulose after silica removal had 2% ash and 87% purity. The innovation of this process lies in the development of a comprehensive, sustainable, efficient, and economically viable biorefinery process that efficiently separates key components of wheat straw, i.e., xylose, lignin, cellulose, and silica, while addressing environmental pollution associated with its traditional use as fuel. Xylanase is commonly thought to effectively cooperate with cellulase to promote the bioconversion of lignocellulose. In this study, a novel xylanase, SipoEnXyn10A (Xyn10A), previously identified from Streptomyces ipomoeae, was employed to investigate its synergetic effects on sugarcane bagasse (SCB) transformation. It was shown that the relative increase in reducing sugars reached up to 65%, with enhanced yields of glucose and xylose by 78% and 50%, respectively, in the case of the replacement of cellulase with an equivalent amount of Xyn10A at an enzyme loading of 12.5%. The highest degrees of synergy (DS) for glucose and xylose could reach 2.57 and 1.84. Moreover, the hydrolysis rate increased evidently, and the reaction time to reach the same yield of glucose and xylose was shortened by 72 h and 96 h, respectively. This study on synergistic mechanisms demonstrated that the addition of Xyn10A could cause the destruction of substrates' morphology and the dissolution of lignin components but could not change the accessibility and crystallinity of substrate cellulose. Plant-based waste biomass with lignocellulose as an important component is produced in large quantities worldwide every year. The components of lignocellulose that typically exhibit high utilization value include cellulose and hemicellulose, as well as pentoses and hexoses derived from their hydrolysis. As a pretreatment for the hydrolysis process, delignification is a pivotal step to enhance cellulose/hemicellulose accessibility and achieve high yields of fermentable sugars. Additionally, deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are the most widely used solvents for delignification during biomass fractionation due to their clean and environmentally friendly attributes. DESs dissolve lignin by inducing a large amount of β-O-4 bond cleavage and partial carbon–carbon bond cleavage, retaining cellulose in the solid residue, while most of the hemicellulose is hydrolyzed in DES pretreatment. The litter decomposition of plant leaves is a vital process in carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) cycling in global terrestrial ecosystems. However, previous assessments of the key determinants of the N deposition effects of litter decomposition have been more controversial. In this meta-analysis, we compared the overall effects of N addition on the litter decomposition rates, litter nutrient content (C and N), and litter constituent (lignin and cellulose) residual rates using a log response ratio approach. Our results showed that exogenous N addition increased the N content and inhibited lignin degradation in litter. N deposition decreased the leaf litter decomposition rate by increasing the lignin and N residues and decreasing the litter C content and soil pH. The analysis also concluded that the initial litter C/N ratio, lignin content, and soil pH were main factors in mediating the effect of N deposition on litter decomposition rate. Overall, the results of this study indicate that N deposition can slow decomposition rates by inhibiting N release and lignin degradation of litter. Notably, these results emphasize that the effect of N deposition on litter decomposition mainly depends on the endogenous quality of the litter and soil pH in the decomposition environment. Over the past decade, the production of biofuels from lignocellulosic biomass has steadily increased to offset the use of fuels from petroleum. To make biofuels cost-competitive, however, it is necessary to add value to the "ligno-" components (up to 30% by mass) of the biomass. The properties of lignin, in terms of molecular weight (MW), chemical functionality, and mineral impurities often vary from biomass source and biorefinery process, resulting in a challenging precursor for product development. Activated carbon (AC) is a feasible target for the lignin-rich byproduct streams because it can be made from nearly any biomass, and it has a market capacity large enough to use much of the lignin generated from the biorefineries. However, it is not known how the variability in the lignin affects the key properties of AC, because, until now, they could not be well controlled. In this work, various fractions of ultraclean (<0.6% ash) lignin are created with refined MW distributions using Aqueous Lignin Purification using Hot Agents (ALPHA) and used as precursors for AC. AC is synthesized via zinc chloride activation and characterized for pore structure and adsorption capacity. We show that AC surface area and the adsorption capacity increase when using lignin with increasing MW, and, furthermore, that reducing the mineral content of lignin can significantly enhance the AC properties. The surface area of the AC from the highest MW lignin can reach ~1830 m2/g (absorption capacity). Furthermore, single step activation carbonization using zinc chloride allows for minimal carbon burn off (<30%), capturing most of the lignin carbon compared to traditional burn off methods in biorefineries for heat generation. Polyurethanes (PU) have drawn great attention due to their excellent mechanical properties and self-healing and recyclable abilities. Lignin is a natural and renewable raw material in nature, composed of a large number of hydroxyl groups, and has a great potential to replace petroleum polyols in PU synthesis. This review summarizes the recent advances in modification methods such as the liquefaction, alkylation, and demethylation of lignin, and a systematic analysis of how to improve the reactivity and monomer substitution of lignin during polyurethane synthesis for the green manufacturing of high-performance polyurethanes was conducted. It is a formidable challenge in thermoplastic/lignin composites to simultaneously boost tensile strength and elongation performance due to the rigidity of lignin. To address this issue, sodium-alginate-doped lignin nanoparticles (SLNPs) were prepared by combining solvent exchange and a coprecipitation method and used as an eco-friendly filler for poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT). The results indicated that the 1% polyanionic sodium alginate solution contributed to the formation of SLNP in lignin/THF solution. SLNP with a mean hydrodynamic diameter of ~500 nm and a Zeta potential value of −19.2 mV was obtained, indicating more hydrophobic lignin nanoparticles and a smaller number of agglomerates in SLNP suspension. Only 0.5 wt% SLNP addition improved the yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation at break by 32.4%, 31.8%, and 35.1% of the PBAT/SLNP composite films, respectively. The reinforcing effect resulted from the rigid aromatic structure of SLNP, whereas the enhanced elongation was attributed to the nanostructural feature of SLNP, which may promote boundary cracking. Additionally, the PBAT/SLNP composite films displayed excellent ultraviolet (UV) resistance with a UV shielding percentage near 100% for UVB and more than 75% for UVA, respectively. The addition of SLNP hindered water vapor, enhancing the moisture barrier properties. Overall, this study provides an effective strategy to eliminate the decrement in elongation performance for PBAT/lignin composites and suggest they are good candidates to be extensively utilized. Polysaccharides are an excellent renewable source for developing food-packing materials. It is expected that these packages can be an efficient barrier against oxygen; can reduce lipid peroxidation, and can retain the natural aroma of a food commodity. Starch has tremendous potential to be explored in the preparation of food packaging; however, due to their high hydrophilic nature, packaging films produced from starch possess poor protective moisture barriers and low mechanical properties. This scenario limits their applications, especially in humid conditions. In contrast, lignin's highly complex aromatic hetero-polymer network of phenylpropane units is known to play a filler role in polysaccharide films. Moreover, lignin can limit the biodegradability of polysaccharides films by a physical barrier, mainly, and by non-productive bindings. The main interactions affecting lignin non-productive bindings are hydrophobic interactions, electrostatic interactions, and hydrogen-bonding interactions, which are dependent on the total phenolic –OH and –COOH content in its chemical structure. In this review, the use of lignin as a reinforcement to improve the biodegradability of starch-based films in wet environments is presented. Moreover, the characteristics of the used lignins, the mechanisms of molecular interaction among these materials, and the sensitive physicochemical parameters for biodegradability detection are related. The natural aromatic polymer lignin and its lignin-like oligomeric fragments have attracted attention for their antioxidant capacity and free radical scavenging activities. In this study, a 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assay was employed to assess the antioxidant capacity of fractionated and partially depolymerized organosolv lignin by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. The results show significant antioxidant activity for both the lignin and oligomeric fragments, with the EPR measurements demonstrating their efficiency in quenching the free radicals. The EPR data were analyzed to derive the kinetic rate constants. The radical scavenging activity (RSA) of lignins was then determined by UV-Vis spectroscopy and the results were compared with the EPR method. This two-method approach improves the reliability and understanding of the antioxidant potential of lignin and its derivatives and provides valuable insights for their potential applications in various industries, including pharmaceuticals, food preservation, and cosmetics. Normal root growth is essential for the plant uptake of soil nutrients and water. However, exogenous H2O2 inhibits the gravitropic growth of pea primary roots. It has been shown that CaCl2 application can alleviate H2O2 inhibition, but the exact alleviation mechanism is not clear. Therefore, the present study was carried out by combining the transcriptome and metabolome with a view to investigate in depth the mechanism of action of exogenous CaCl2 to alleviate the inhibition of pea primordial root gravitropism by H2O2. The results showed that the addition of CaCl2 (10 mmol·L−1) under H2O2 stress (150 mmol·L−1) significantly increased the H2O2 and starch content, decreased peroxidase (POD) activity, and reduced the accumulation of sugar metabolites and lignin in pea primary roots. Down-regulated genes regulating peroxidase, respiratory burst oxidase, and lignin synthesis up-regulated PGM1, a key gene for starch synthesis, and activated the calcium and phytohormone signaling pathways. In summary, 10 mmol·L−1 CaCl2 could alleviate H2O2 stress by modulating the oxidative stress response, signal transduction, and starch and lignin accumulation within pea primary roots, thereby promoting root gravitropism. Pinus massoniana L. is one of the most important conifer species in southern China and is the mainstay of the forest ecosystem and timber production, yet low temperatures limit its growth and geographical distribution. This study used 30-day-old seedlings from families of varying cold-tolerance to examine the morphological traits of needles and stems, chlorophyll fluorescence characteristics, protective enzymes, and changes in starch and lignin under different low-temperature stresses in an artificial climate chamber. The results showed that the seedlings of Pinus massoniana exhibited changes in phenotypic morphology and tissue structure under low-temperature stress. Physiological and biochemical indexes such as protective enzymes, osmoregulatory substances, starch, and lignin responded to low-temperature stress. The cold-tolerant family increased soluble sugars, starch grain, and lignin content as well as peroxidase activity, and decreased malondialdehyde content by increasing the levels of actual photochemical efficiency (ΦPSII), electron transport rate (ETR), and photochemical quenching (qP) to improve the cold tolerance ability. This study provides a reference for the selection and breeding of cold-tolerant genetic resources of Pinus massoniana and the mechanism of cold-tolerance, as well as the analysis of the mechanism of adaptation of Pinus massoniana in different climatic regions of China. Currently, the composite industry is focusing on more environmentally friendly resources in order to generate a new range of biobased materials. In this manuscript, we present a new work using lignocellulosic wastes from the paper industry to incorporate into biobased epoxy systems. The manufactured materials were composed of kraft lignin, glass fiber, and a sustainable epoxy system, obtaining a 40% biobased content. Using a vacuum infusion process, we fabricated the composites and analyzed their mechanical and UV resistance properties. The findings reveal a significant correlation between the lignin content and flexural modulus and strength, showing an increase of 69% in the flexural modulus and 134% in the flexural strength with the presence of 5% of lignin content. Moreover, it is necessary to highlight that the presence of synthesized lignin inhibits the UV degradation of the biobased epoxy coating. Cellulose and lignin, sourced from biomass, hold potential for innovative bioprocesses and biomaterials. However, traditional fractionation and purification methods often rely on harmful chemicals and high temperatures, making these processes both hazardous and costly. This study introduces a sustainable approach for fractionating acacia wood, focusing on both cellulose and lignin extraction using a deep eutectic solvent (DES) composed of choline chloride (ChCl) and levulinic acid (LA). A design of experiment was employed for the optimization of the most relevant fractionation parameters: time and temperature. In the case of the lignin, both parameters were found to be significant variables in the fractionation process (p-values of 0.0128 and 0.0319 for time and temperature, respectively), with a positive influence. Likewise, in the cellulose case, time and temperature also demonstrated a positive effect, with p-values of 0.0103 and 0.028, respectively. An optimization study was finally conducted to determine the maximum fractionation yield of lignin and cellulose. The optimized conditions were found to be 15% (w/v) of the wood sample in 1:3 ChCl:LA under a treatment temperature of 160 °C for 8 h. The developed method was validated through repeatability and intermediate precision studies, which yielded a coefficient of variation lower than 5%. The recovery and reuse of DES were successfully evaluated, revealing remarkable fractionation yields even after five cycles. This work demonstrates the feasibility of selectively extracting lignin and cellulose from woody biomass using a sustainable solvent, thus paving the way for valorization of invasive species biomass. Nowadays, there is a challenge in searching for more sustainable alternatives to decrease the environmental impact of composite materials. In this work, we fabricate new composites based on a biobased-content epoxy system, lignin, and flax fiber; considering these materials could be promising due to their high renewable content of around 40%. In addition, another key requirement for composites, besides being sustainable, is that they present improved properties such as UV resistance. Therefore, throughout this work, priority was given to improving UV resistance in addition to taking into account sustainability. In order to carry out a complete characterization of the materials developed, the mechanical properties, brightness, and thermal, rheological, and fire behavior of these kinds of materials were analyzed by using vacuum-assisted resin infusion processes. By way of conclusion, it should be noted that the manufactured composite with the optimized formulation showed improved UV resistance using lignin and that it could be applied on internal and external walls according to the railway fire regulations. Dendrocalamus farinosus bamboo shoots, a species with rich nutritional value, are important in Southwest China. Lignin is an important factor affecting the postharvest flavor quality of bamboo shoots; however, the underlying mechanism of lignin deposition in D. farinosus bamboo shoots during cold storage is still not fully understood. In this study, the mutant D. farinosus XK4 with low lignin content at 3.11% and the cultivated variety ZPX at 4.47% were used as experimental materials. The lignin content of D. farinosus XK4 and ZPX, as well as the gene expression differences between them, were compared and analyzed during cold storage using transcriptomic and physiological methods. Our analysis revealed several key genes and found that D. farinosus CCoAOMT1 plays a key role in the regulatory network of bamboo shoots during cold storage. Tobacco heterologous transformation experiments demonstrated that overexpression of DfCCoAOMT1 significantly increases lignin content. This study provides a novel foundation for future research aimed at improving the postharvest quality and flavor of D. farinosus bamboo shoots through targeted genetic manipulation during cold storage. A density functional theory method was employed to conduct theoretical calculations on the pyrolysis reaction pathways of lignin monomer model compounds with an aldehyde or carboxyl group under the catalytic effect of alkali metal ions Na+ and K+, exploring their influence on the formation of the small molecular gaseous products CO and CO2. The results indicate that Na+ and K+ can easily bind with the oxygen-containing functional groups of the lignin monomer model compounds to form stable and low-energy complexes. Except for benzaldehyde and p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, Na+ and K+ can facilitate the decarbonylation reactions of other benzaldehyde-based and phenylacetaldehyde-based lignin monomer model compounds during the pyrolysis process, thereby enhancing the generation of CO. When the characteristic functional groups on the benzene rings of benzaldehyde-based and phenylacetaldehyde-based lignin monomer model compounds are the same, the phenylacetaldehyde-based ones are more prone to undergo decarbonylation than the benzaldehyde-based ones. Additionally, both Na+ and K+ can inhibit the decarboxylation reactions of benzoic acid-based and phenylacetic acid-based lignin monomer model compounds, thereby restraining the formation of CO2. When the characteristic functional groups on the benzene rings of benzoic acid-based and phenylacetic acid-based lignin monomer model compounds are the same, the phenylacetic acid-based ones are more difficult to undergo decarboxylation than the benzoic acid-based ones. Panicle-type structure is an important factor affecting rice yield, and an excellent panicle type has become a key indicator in rice breeding. In this study, the indica rice variety R766, which has an open panicle type, was obtained through natural mutation and hybrid selection. Through analyzing differences in panicle structure, panicle yield, and chemical composition between open panicle rice R766 and conventional panicle rice R2928, we found that the angles of the middle and lower branches in R766 were 186.99% and 135.93% greater than those in R2928, respectively. By comparing the grain-filling characteristics of different panicle positions in the two rice varieties, we found that the grain filling at the middle and lower panicle positions of R2928 was significantly lower, accompanied by an increase in the percentage of empty spikelets. However, in R766, the grain-filling rates in the middle and lower panicle positions were consistent with those in the upper panicle position, with significantly higher rates of grain filling and grain plumpness in the middle and lower panicle positions than in R2928. The empty grain rate at the lower panicle position of R766 was 15.25% lower than that of R2928, and the grain filling was 24.75% higher than that of R2928. Additionally, the variation in the 1000-grain weight of grains at different panicle positions in R766 was relatively small, with decreases of 1.55% and 0.38% in the middle and lower panicle positions, respectively, compared with the upper position, whereas R2928 showed decreases of 5.99% and 7.12% in the 1000-grain weight of grains at the middle and lower panicle positions, respectively, compared with the upper position. The cellulose content in the stems of R766 was 7.51% higher than that of R2928, with no significant difference in the cellulose content in the panicle axis and primary branches compared to R2928. The lignin content of the panicle axis in R766 was 8.03% higher than that in R2928, whereas there was no significant difference between the lignin content of the stems and primary branches. This preliminary study revealed the open panicle characteristics of R766 and the reasons for its high basal grain setting rate. This study provides a reference for promoting this open panicle-type indica rice variety to improve yield and disease resistance in environments with high humidity and low sunlight levels. Natural compounds are becoming increasingly popular in the fields of pharmaceuticals and cosmetics. One such compound is lignin, a plant-derived aromatic polymer that serves as a natural anti-ultraviolet agent. Conventional methods for extracting lignin from plant materials typically involve performing procedures in harsh environments, such as dissolving it in highly alkaline solutions or subjecting it to treatment in acidic conditions. In this study, lignin was extracted from coconut husk under milder conditions, using neutral solvents and ultrasonic treatment, which allowed us to obtain lignin with significantly improved properties. The developed method facilitated the creation of light-colored lignin, which was employed as a natural ingredient in sunblock cream. Furthermore, for the sake of comparison, lignin was extracted under more rigorous conditions using the traditional method. The research findings confirm that the light-colored lignin sample exhibits a higher level of UV absorption. Furthermore, light-colored lignin demonstrates a synergistic effect when combined with commercial moisturizing creams and sunscreens, leading to a significant enhancement in their SPF performance against both UVA and direct sunlight exposure. Cork, the outermost tissue of bark, plays an important role in protecting trees from the surrounding environment and is used for various purposes, including flooring and insulation materials for buildings. This study focused on the amount and distribution of hydrophobic substances such as suberin and lignin in cork, as well as moisture conditions, to understand the mechanical properties of Cerasus jamasakura cork. Strips of cork were subjected to tensile tests after exposure to various moisture conditions (water-saturated, air-dried and oven-dried), and also after the desuberinisation and delignification of specimens. Cork with a high moisture content showed significant strain to the tensile load, whereas oven-dried specimens showed little toughness. The increased toughness of cork at higher moisture contents was due to the continued elongation in the plastic region, especially in the inner cork. The fibre length of the highly deformed cork differed significantly before and after the tensile test. Tensile tests of cork after desuberinisation and delignification indicated that the removal of suberin caused an earlier reduction in tensile properties than the removal of lignin. Angelica dahurica var. formosana (ADF), which belongs to the Umbelliferae family, is one of the original plants of herbal raw material Angelicae Dahuricae Radix. ADF roots represent an enormous biomass resource convertible for disease treatment and bioproducts. But, early bolting of ADF resulted in lignification and a decrease in the coumarin content in the root, and roots lignification restricts its coumarin for commercial utility. Although there have been attempts to regulate the synthesis ratio of lignin and coumarin through biotechnology to increase the coumarin content in ADF and further enhance its commercial value, optimizing the biosynthesis of lignin and coumarin remains challenging. Based on gene expression analysis and phylogenetic tree profiling, AdNAC20 as the target for genetic engineering of lignin and coumarin biosynthesis in ADF was selected in this study. Early-bolting ADF had significantly greater degrees of root lignification and lower coumarin contents than that of the normal plants. In this study, overexpression of AdNAC20 gene plants were created using transgenic technology, while independent homozygous transgenic lines with precise site mutation of AdNAC20 were created using CRISPR/Cas9 technology. The overexpressing transgenic ADF plants showed a 9.28% decrease in total coumarin content and a significant 12.28% increase in lignin content, while knockout mutant plants showed a 16.3% increase in total coumarin content and a 33.48% decrease in lignin content. Furthermore, 29,671 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were obtained by comparative transcriptomics of OE-NAC20, KO-NAC20, and WT of ADF. A schematic diagram of the gene network interacting with AdNAC20 during the early-bolting process of ADF was constructed by DEG analysis. AdNAC20 was predicted to directly regulate the transcription of several genes with SNBE-like motifs in their promoter, such as MYB46, C3H, and CCoAOMT. This research investigated the structural and chemical modifications of Dahlia 'Kennemerland' across different technological conditions and throughout the vegetation period. Using FT-IR imaging, this study focused on the changes in the inulin, lignin, and suberin contents of tuberous roots. FT-IR maps were generated to visualize the distribution of these compounds across scanned areas, highlighting variations across cultivation methods and seasonal stages. The key compounds analyzed included inulin, lignin, and suberin, which were identified in different root zones. The results showed that inulin was distributed in all analyzed areas, predominantly in zone 1 (periderm), with a distribution that increased with forced cultivation, while lignin and suberin distributions varied with zone and season. Forced tuberous root lignin was detected in all four areas analyzed, in the fall accumulating mainly in area 4 and in suberin starting from summer until autumn. Based on the evaluation of the maps obtained by representing the area ratios of specific bands (inulin/lignin and inulin/suberin), we established where the inulin was present in the highest quantity and concluded that suberin was the constituent with the lowest concentration in tuberous Dahlia roots. These findings emphasize the influence of technological factors and seasonal changes on the biochemical makeup of tuberous Dahlia roots. This detailed biochemical mapping provides insights for optimizing Dahlia cultivation and storage for various industrial applications. Sand pear is the main cultivated pear species in China, and brown peel is a unique feature of sand pear. The formation of brown peel is related to the activity of the cork layer, of which lignin is an important component. The formation of brown peel is intimately associated with the biosynthesis and accumulation of lignin; however, the regulatory mechanism of lignin biosynthesis in pear peel remains unclear. In this study, we used a newly bred sand pear cultivar 'Xinyu' as the material to investigate the biosynthesis and accumulation of lignin at nine developmental stages using metabolomic and transcriptomic methods. Our results showed that the 30 days after flowering (DAF) to 50DAF were the key periods of lignin accumulation according to data analysis from the assays of lignin measurement, scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation, metabolomics, and transcriptomics. Through weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA), positively correlated modules with lignin were identified. A total of nine difference lignin components were identified and 148 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), including 10 structural genes (PAL1, C4H, two 4CL genes, HCT, CSE, two COMT genes, and two CCR genes) and MYB, NAC, ERF, and TCP transcription factor genes were involved in lignin metabolism. An analysis of RT-qPCR confirmed that these DEGs were involved in the biosynthesis and regulation of lignin. These findings further help us understand the mechanisms of lignin biosynthesis and provide a theoretical basis for peel color control and quality improvement in pear breeding and cultivation. This work aimed at optimizing the preparation of activated carbon (AC) from Kraft lignin for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) and amoxicillin (AMX) from water. A full factorial design of three factors (precursor:activating agent (H3PO4) ratio, pyrolysis temperature, and residence time) at two levels was used to optimize the AC production. Eight AC products were obtained and evaluated considering the following responses: product yield, specific surface area (SBET), energy consumption, and adsorptive removal of the contaminants under study. The produced AC presented satisfactory SBET, ranging between 750 and 1335 m2 g−1, and efficient adsorption of MB and AMX from water, achieving up to 99% removal under the studied experimental conditions (100 mg L−1 of MB and AMX solution and material dose of 1 g L−1). Statistical analysis showed that product yield and energy consumption for AC production were influenced by temperature and residence time. The determination of a desirability function indicated a precursor/H3PO4 ratio of 1:2, pyrolysis at 700 °C, and residence time of 60 min as the optimal production conditions. The optimized AC presented SBET 1335 m2 g−1 and maximum adsorption capacity of 210 and 280 mg g−1 for MB and AMX, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Vanillin (4-hydroxy-3-methoxybenzaldehyde) is the main component of natural vanilla and a relevant substance in the flavoring and aromatic industries. This study presents a kinetic model to explain both vanillin and vanillic acid concentrations achieved in the alkaline oxidation of pine kraft lignin. Considering that they come from the same precursors, this approach allows an understanding of vanillin production with reaction conditions that minimize the vanillic acid pathway directly from the lignin oligomers, thus maximizing vanillin production. This study involves the effects of oxygen partial pressure, temperature, and the presence or absence of a catalyst (CuSO4 and Fe2(SO4)3 mixture) on the vanillin and vanillic acid yields. An adapted reactor (M/K Systems Inc., Williamstown, MA, USA) with a recirculation and spray liquids system was used in the experiments. The experiments were performed using one liter of a solution of NaOH 2 M and 60 g of lignin. During the lignin oxidation reaction, liquid samples were analyzed at different times (from 0 to 200 min). The oxidation products were quantified by liquid chromatography (HPLC). The catalyzed experiments presented higher maximum vanillin yields than the non-catalyzed ones (39.2–39.6% on nitrobenzene oxidation) achieved at 150 °C. A kinetic model is proposed where the kinetic parameters were estimated using Monte Carlo methods, fitting satisfactorily to the experimental results. Lignocellulose has served as precursor material for carbon fibers (CFs) before fossil-based polymers were discovered as superior feedstock. To date, CFs made from polyacrylonitrile have dominated the market. In search of low-cost carbon fibers for applications with medium strength requirements, cellulose and lignin, either as individual macromolecule or in combination, have re-gained interest as renewable raw material. In this study, cellulose with 30 wt% lignin was dry-jet wet-spun into a precursor filament for bio-based carbon fibers. The stabilization and carbonization conditions were first tested offline, using stationary ovens. Diammonium sulfate (DAS) and diammonium hydrogen phosphate were tested as catalysts to enhance the stabilization process. Stabilization is critical as the filaments' strength properties drop in this phase before they rise again at higher temperatures. DAS was identified as a better option and used for subsequent trials on a continuous carbonization line. Carbon fibers with ca. 700 MPa tensile strength and 60–70 GPa tensile modulus were obtained at 1500 °C. Upon further carbonization at 1950 °C, moduli of >100 GPa were achieved. Research in historical timber assessment is hindered by the limited availability of samples, yet understanding the fire resistance of historic wood is crucial for preservation efforts. There is an opinion that historic wood behaves similarly to contemporary wood in terms of fire resistance. The aim of this paper is to observe the rate of charring of historical pine wood during the experiment, the color changes in the sample that occurred due to thermal loading, and the changes in the chemical composition of pine wood. Test samples made from historic pine wood were loaded with a 50 kW∙m−2 radiation panel for 60 min. The charring process was faster at the beginning of the charred layer formation. The charring rate at the beginning of the test at a depth of 10 mm from the exposed side reached values from 1.28 mm∙min−1 to 3.16 mm∙min−1. At a depth of 30 mm from the exposed side, the individual charring rates approached a value of 1 mm∙min−1 (0.99 mm∙min−1 to 1.08 mm∙min−1). Observations during medium-scale testing revealed distinct layers forming on the exposed side: a charred layer, charring base, pyrolysis layer, and intact wood. The chemical composition of the wood changed under the influence of the thermal load. The relative contents of extractives and holocellulose decreased with the increasing temperature while the lignin content increased. The highest value of combustion heat was measured in the charred layer of the sample. Correlation analysis demonstrated a negative relationship between the combustion heat and holocellulose, while a positive correlation was found with the lignin content. Chemical changes were also monitored using the FTIR method. These findings provide valuable insights into the behavior of historic pine wood under thermal loading, which is essential for understanding and preserving historical structures. The conversion of biomass into bio-oil through the pyrolysis process offers numerous benefits, such as bio-fuel and bio-resin synthesis. However, for bio-oil usage for any application, understanding its composition is vital. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of different commonly available woody biomass (Douglas fir, eucalyptus, and poplar) on bio-oil composition. The bio-oil was produced through fast pyrolysis at 500 °C in a fluidized bed reactor and collected using an electrostatic precipitator. The chemical composition was analyzed using gas chromatography–mass spectroscopy, and the hydroxyl groups were quantified using phosphorous-31 nuclear magnetic resonance. The poplar bio-oil had the most significant proportion (67 area%) of lignin-derived compounds and the highest OH concentration (6 mmol g−1). However, the proportion of carbohydrate-derived compounds was the largest (44 area %) in bio-oil produced from Douglas fir. Based on the OH concentration, poplar would be the most suitable feedstock for resin synthesis among the three feedstocks tested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
