Advancing neuromorphic computing technology requires the development of versatile synaptic devices. In this study, we fabricated a high-performance Al/LiNbO3/Pt memristive synapse and emulated various synaptic functions using its primary key operating mechanism, known as oxygen vacancy-mediated valence charge migration (VO-VCM). The voltage-controlled VO-VCM induced space-charge-limited conduction and self-rectifying asymmetric hysteresis behaviors. Moreover, the device exhibited voltage pulse-tunable multi-state memory characteristics because the degree of VO-VCM was dependent on the applied pulse parameters (e.g., polarity, amplitude, width, and interval). As a result, synaptic functions such as short-term memory, dynamic range-tunable long-term memory, and spike time-dependent synaptic plasticity were successfully demonstrated by modulating those pulse parameters. Additionally, simulation studies on hand-written image pattern recognition confirmed that the present device performed with high accuracy, reaching up to 95.2%. This article reviews the latest advancements in perovskite solar cell (PSC) components for innovative photovoltaic applications. Perovskite materials have emerged as promising candidates for next-generation solar cells due to their exceptional light-absorbing capabilities and facile fabrication processes. However, limitations in their stability, scalability, and efficiency have hindered their widespread adoption. This review systematically explores recent breakthroughs in PSC components, focusing on absorbed layer engineering, electron and hole transport layers, and interface materials. In particular, it discusses novel perovskite compositions, crystal structures, and manufacturing techniques that enhance stability and scalability. Additionally, the review evaluates strategies to improve charge carrier mobility, reduce recombination, and address environmental considerations. Emphasis is placed on scalable manufacturing methods suitable for large-scale integration into existing infrastructure. This comprehensive review thus provides researchers, engineers, and policymakers with the key information needed to motivate the further advancements required for the transformative integration of PSCs into global energy production. This study explores the application of fine-tuned large language models for predicting physicochemical properties, specifically focusing on Abraham model solute descriptors (E, S, A, B, V) and modified solvent parameters (e0, s0, a0, b0, v0). By leveraging ChemLLaMA, a specialized version of the LLaMA model for cheminformatics tasks, we developed the AbraLlama-Solvent and AbraLlama-Solute models using curated datasets of experimentally derived solute descriptors and solvent parameters. Our findings demonstrate that AbraLlama-Solvent and AbraLlama-Solute predict modified solvent parameters and solute descriptors with high accuracy, comparable to existing methods. The AbraLlama-Solvent model shows varying prediction accuracy across different solvents, influenced by their position within the chemical space, while the AbraLlama-Solute model consistently predicts solute descriptors with high accuracy. Both models are available as applications on Hugging Face, facilitating easy predictions from SMILES strings. This research highlights the potential of LLMs in chemistry applications, offering practical tools for solvent comparison and expanding the applicability of Abraham solvation equations to a broader range of organic solvents. In this study, two types of Si3N4 ball bearings for integrated-type EV reducers developed via different manufacturing processes were analyzed to study the microstructure of the balls and the defects that may occur during the manufacturing process. Three types of defects were confirmed that can reduce the fatigue life of Si3N4 ball bearings in operating environments. The microstructure was analyzed to identify the main additive components of each bearing, and pore defects with a size of less than 1 μm, and the types (particle defects or surface defects) and sizes of defects, were analyzed using LSCM, OM, and SEM. Hardness and fracture toughness, which are representative mechanical properties of ceramic materials, were evaluated. The results, evaluated using a Vickers indentation crack-based method, were statistically analyzed to confirm differences in hardness and fracture toughness between the two samples. In pursuit of realizing neuromorphic computing devices, we demonstrated the high-performance synaptic functions on the top-to-bottom Au/ZnVO/Pt two-terminal ferroelectric Schottky junction (FSJ) device architecture. The active layer of ZnVO exhibited the ferroelectric characteristics because of the broken lattice-translational symmetry, arising from the incorporation of smaller V5+ ions into smaller Zn2+ host lattice sites. The fabricated FSJ devices displayed an asymmetric hysteresis behavior attributed to the ferroelectric polarization-dependent Schottky field-emission rate difference in between positive and negative bias voltage regions. Additionally, it was observed that the magnitude of the on-state current could be systematically controlled by changing either the amplitude or the width of the applied voltage pulses. Owing to these voltage pulse-tunable multi-state memory characteristics, the device revealed diverse synaptic functions such as short-term memory, dynamic range-tunable long-term memory, and versatile rules in spike time-dependent synaptic plasticity. For the pattern-recognition simulation, furthermore, more than 95% accuracy was recorded when using the optimized experimental device parameters. The transport characteristics of a gate-all-around Si multiple-quantum-dot (QD) transistor were studied by means of experimental parametrization using theoretical models. The device was fabricated by using the e-beam lithographically patterned Si nanowire channel, in which the ultrasmall QDs were self-created along the Si nanowire due to its volumetric undulation. Owing to the large quantum-level spacings of the self-formed ultrasmall QDs, the device clearly exhibited both Coulomb blockade oscillation (CBO) and negative differential conductance (NDC) characteristics at room temperature. Furthermore, it was also observed that both CBO and NDC could evolve along the extended blockade region within wide gate and drain bias voltage ranges. By analyzing the experimental device parameters using the simple theoretical single-hole-tunneling models, the fabricated QD transistor was confirmed as comprising the double-dot system. Consequently, based on the analytical energy-band diagram, we found that the formation of ultrasmall QDs with imbalanced energetic natures (i.e., imbalanced quantum energy states and their imbalanced capacitive-coupling strengths between the two dots) could lead to effective CBO/NDC evolution in wide bias voltage ranges. We studied the effect of side reactions on the reversibility of epoxy with thermoreversible Diels–Alder (DA) cycloadducts based on furan and maleimide chemistry. The most common side reaction is the maleimide homopolymerization which introduces irreversible crosslinking in the network adversely affecting the recyclability. The main challenge is that the temperatures at which maleimide homopolymerization can occur are approximately the same as the temperatures at which retro-DA (rDA) reactions depolymerize the networks. Here we conducted detailed studies on three different strategies to minimize the effect of the side reaction. First, we controlled the ratio of maleimide to furan to reduce the concentration of maleimide groups which diminishes the effects of the side reaction. Second, we applied a radical-reaction inhibitor. Inclusion of hydroquinone, a known free radical scavenger, is found to retard the onset of the side reaction both in the temperature sweep and isothermal measurements. Finally, we employed a new trismaleimide precursor that has a lower maleimide concentration and reduces the rate of the side reaction. Our results provide insights into how to minimize formation of irreversible crosslinking by side reactions in reversible DA materials using maleimides, which is important for their application as novel self-healing, recyclable, and 3D-printable materials. The high-performance room-temperature-operating Si single-electron transistors (SETs) were devised in the form of the multiple quantum-dot (MQD) multiple tunnel junction (MTJ) system. The key device architecture of the Si MQD MTJ system was self-formed along the volumetrically undulated [110] Si nanowire that was fabricated by isotropic wet etching and subsequent oxidation of the e-beam-lithographically patterned [110] Si nanowire. The strong subband modulation in the volumetrically undulated [110] Si nanowire could create both the large quantum level spacings and the high tunnel barriers in the Si MQD MTJ system. Such a device scheme can not only decrease the cotunneling effect, but also reduce the effective electron temperature. These eventually led to the energetic stability for both the Coulomb blockade and the negative differential conductance characteristics at room temperature. It is well known that many polymers are prone to outdoor weathering degradation. Therefore, to ensure the safety and integrity of the structural parts and components made from polymers for outdoor use, their weather-affected mechanical behavior needs to be better understood. In this study, the critical mechanical property for degradation was identified and modeled into a usable format for use in the virtual analysis. To achieve this, an extensive 4-year outdoor weathering test was carried out on polycarbonate (PC), polypropylene (PP), polybutylene terephthalate (PBT), and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) polymers up to a total UV irradiation of 1020 MJ/m2 at a 315~400 nm wavelength. In addition, tensile tests were performed by collecting five specimens for each material at every 60 MJ/m2 interval. With the identification of fracture strain retention as the key performance index for mechanical property degradation, a fracture strain retention function was developed using logistic regression analysis for each polymer. In addition, a method for using fracture strain retention function to establish a mechanical property degradation dataset was proposed and successfully tested by performing weathering FE analysis on the virtual automotive collision behavior of a PC part under intermittent UV irradiation doses. This work showed the potential of using fracture strain retention function to predict the performance of polymeric components undergoing mechanical property degradation upon outdoor weathering. Mechano-optoelectronic (MO) behavior indicates changes in optoelectronic properties in response to the applied mechanical deformation. The MO behavior can be employed to monitor the mechanical deformation of a targeted system by tracing its optoelectronic properties. Poly(3-hexylthiophene) and phenyl-C61-butyric acid methyl ester (P3HT/PCBM) blend thin films exhibited changes in direct current under tensile strain. Although optoelectronic properties and photovoltaic performance of P3HT/PCBM blends have been studied extensively and intensively, research required for MO properties has a fundamental difference from previous research mostly for solar cells. In research for MO systems, a greater extent of changes in optoelectronic properties under mechanical deformation is favorable. Herein, previous research for optoelectronic properties and mechanical properties of conjugated polymers will be reviewed from a perspective on MO properties. The microstructure of a conjugated polymer thin film plays a pivotal role in its optoelectronic properties and mechanical properties. Key parameters involved in the microstructure of conjugated polymer thin films will be addressed. A scalable process is required to broaden applications of MO systems. Potential challenges in the fabrication of MO conjugated polymer thin films will be discussed. To evaluate long-term temperature changes caused by the operation of a geothermal heat pump (GHP) system, temperatures near borehole heat exchangers (BHEs) of the GHP system in Korea were measured. The temperature measurements showed increasing rates of 0.135 °C/year at a depth of 10 m and 0.118 °C/year at a depth of 50 m for approximately 10 years. Simulations for the analysis of climate change effects on measured temperature fluctuations showed that a rate of temperature increase was 0.010 °C/year at a depth of 50 m owing to changes in surface air temperatures (SATs). From two-dimensional heat transfer simulations, the discharged heat measuring 16.7 W/m in the cooling season and extracted heat measuring 12.4 W/m in the heating season could cause an annual mean temperature increase of 0.109 °C over approximately 10 years. Additionally, results of simulations for future prediction of ground temperatures assuming that the GHP system retains its level of operation showed that in 2050, temperature at a depth of 50 m will increase by approximately 3.00 °C from that in 2005. Thus, balancing the heat discharged into and extracted from the ground by considering climate change to minimize long-term changes in the ground temperature is necessary. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The highly sensitive ultra-violet (UV) photodiode was demonstrated on the organic-inorganic hybrid heterostructure of β-phase p-type polyfluorene (PFO)/n-type yttrium-doped zinc oxide nanorods (YZO-NRs). The device was fabricated through a simple fabrication technique of β-phase PFO coating onto YZO-NRs that had been directly grown on graphene by the hydrothermal synthesis method. Under UV illumination (λ = 365 nm), the device clearly showed excellent photoresponse characteristics (e.g., high quantum efficiency ~690%, high photodetectivity ~3.34 × 1012 cm·Hz1/2·W−1, and fast response time ~0.17 s). Furthermore, the ratio of the photo current-to-dark current exceeds 103 even under UV illumination with a small optical power density of 0.6 mW/cm2. We attribute such superb photoresponse characteristics to both Y incorporation into YZO-NRs and conformation of β-phase PFO. Namely, Y dopants could effectively reduce surface states at YZO-NRs, and β-phase PFO might increase the photocarrier conductivity in PFO. Although bevacizumab (Avastin®) has been approved as an antiangiogenic agent against some cancers, the efficacy is transient and unsatisfactory in other cancers most likely owing to the presence of alternative proangiogenic factors. Therefore, simultaneous blocking of several proangiogenic factors may be a promising strategy for antiangiogenic cancer therapeutics. Accordingly, neuropilin-1 (NRP1) is an attractive target because it serves as a multifunctional receptor for the vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) family. Here, we aimed to generate and test an anti-VEGFA and anti-NRP1 dual-targeting bispecific antibody (named as IDB0076) by genetic fusion of an NRP1-targeting peptide to the C-terminus of the bevacizumab heavy chain. Similar to the parental antibody (bevacizumab), IDB0076 suppressed VEGFA-induced migration of human endothelial cells. In contrast, IDB0076 inhibited endothelial-cell migration induced by other angiogenesis growth factors and manifested a more potent antitumor activity than that of bevacizumab in a murine tumor xenograft model. When toxicity was preliminarily evaluated in cynomolgus monkeys, IDB0076 showed no substantial adverse effects, e.g., the absence of noticeable nephrotoxicity, which has previously been documented for the combination therapy of bevacizumab and an anti-NRP1 antibody. A lake is one of the geothermal energy sources to meet increasing demands for renewable energy use. In this study, a series of numerical modeling was performed to evaluate the applicability of a close-loop lake water heat pump (LWHP) system in Lake Soyang, Korea. A non-isothermal pipe flow model was used to simulate the flow and heat transfer processes occurring in the LWHP system with the main pipe and several helical tubes for heat exchange. Based on the temperature data measured in the Lake Soyang for 4 years, the installation depth and the number of helical tubes were determined sequentially, and the sensitivities of additional installation and operation factors on the system performance were analyzed. Assuming a mild current in the lake, the installation and operation conditions for the efficient operation of the system were suggested as follows: The installation of 16 helical tubes at 50 m deep, the circulation rates of heat-carrier fluid of 189.3 L/min, the inner diameter of tubes of 32 mm, and the wall thickness and thermal conductivity of 2.9 mm and 0.4 W/mK, respectively. Considering many lakes and reservoirs in Korea, the closed-loop LWHP system would be a viable renewable energy application. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The nanocomposites of activated-carbon-decorated silicon nanocrystals (ACAC) were synchronously derived in a single step from biomass rice husks, through the simple route of the calcination method together with the magnesiothermic reduction process. The final product, ACAC, exhibited an aggregated structure of activated-carbon-encapsulated nanocrystalline silicon spheres, and reveals a high specific surface area (498.5 m2/g). Owing to the mutualization of advantages from both silicon nanocrystals (i.e., low discharge potential and high specific capacity) and activated carbon (i.e., high porosity and good electrical conductivity), the ACAC nanocomposites are able to play a substantial role as an anodic source material for the lithium-ion battery (LIB). Namely, a high coulombic efficiency (97.5%), a high discharge capacity (716 mAh/g), and a high reversible specific capacity (429 mAh/g after 100 cycles) were accomplished when using ACAC as an LIB anode. Biomass-derived carbonaceous constituents constitute fascinating green technology for electrochemical energy-storage devices. In light of this, interconnected mesoporous graphitic carbon nanoflakes were synthesized by utilizing waste green-tea powders through the sequential steps of air-assisted carbonization, followed by potassium hydroxide activation and water treatment. Green-tea waste-derived graphitic carbon displays an interconnected network of aggregated mesoporous nanoflakes. When using the mesoporous graphitic carbon nanoflakes as an anode material for the lithium-ion battery, an initial capacity of ~706 mAh/g and a reversible discharge capacity of ~400 mAh/g are achieved. Furthermore, the device sustains a large coulombic efficiency up to 96% during 100 operation cycles under the applied current density of 0.1 A/g. These findings depict that the bio-generated mesoporous graphitic carbon nanoflakes could be effectively utilized as a high-quality anode material in lithium-ion battery devices. The low-power, high-performance graphene/ZnO Schottky photodiodes were demonstrated through the direct sputter-growth of ZnO onto the thermally-cleaned graphene/SiO2/Si substrate at room temperature. Prior to the growth of ZnO, a thermal treatment of the graphene surface was performed at 280 °C for 10 min in a vacuum to desorb chemical residues that may serve as trap sites at the interface between graphene and ZnO. The device clearly showed a rectifying behavior with the Schottky barrier of ≈0.61 eV and an ideality factor of 1.16. Under UV illumination, the device exhibited the excellent photoresponse characteristics in both forward and reverse bias regions. When illuminating UV light with the optical power density of 0.62 mW/cm2, the device revealed a high on/off current ratio of >103 even at a low bias voltage of 0.1 V. For the transient characteristics upon switching of UV light pulses, the device represented a fast and stable photoresponse (i.e., rise time: 0.16 s, decay time: 0.19 s). From the temperature-dependent current–voltage characteristics, such an outstanding photoresponse characteristic was found to arise from the enhanced Schottky barrier homogeneity via the thermal treatment of the graphene surface.
