With inherent 'S' characteristics and the one-tunnel-with-two-units arrangement of the pump-turbine, hydraulic transient changes in the successive start-up process are complex, and the optimal control is difficult. This paper aims to study the dynamic characteristics and successive start-up control strategy optimization of two hydraulic couplings pumped storage units (PSUs) under low-head extreme conditions. Firstly, an accurate model of two hydraulic coupling PSUs' successive start-up is established. Based on this model, the influence of the interval time of successive start-up on the dynamic characteristics of PSUs is carried out. It is shown that the change of the interval time of the successive start-up (ΔT) of the two PSUs has a significant impact on the dynamic response stability of the low-head start-up. If ΔT is more than 40 s, the hydraulic oscillation and speed fluctuation of the PSUs deteriorate. Secondly, with the different controller parameters for the two PSUs, a novel multi-objective optimization scheme with fractional order PID controller (FOPID) is proposed to figure out the best control scheme for the successive start-up. Furthermore, selecting the sum of the rise time (Tr) of the rotating speed of two PSUs and the sum of the integral time absolute error (ITAE) of two PSUs is the objective. Meanwhile, the optimization scheme of PID with different parameters (PIDDP) is used to compare and verify the optimization method proposed in this paper. The results for this extreme condition indicate that FOPID has more significant advantages in optimizing the instability of the successive start-up process, with the better Pareto front, and the optimized scheme has a more stable dynamic transition process of flow, water hammer pressure, and rotational speed. This paper investigates the nonlinear modeling and stability of a doubly-fed variable speed pumped storage power station (DFVSPSPS). Firstly, the mathematical model of DFVSPSPS with surge tank considering nonlinear pump turbine characteristics was derived and established. Then, Hopf bifurcation analysis of DFVSPSPS was performed. The stable region was identified and verified by example analysis. Moreover, the effect mechanism of nonlinear pump turbine characteristics on the stability of DFVSPSPS was explored. Finally, the influence of factors on the stability and dynamic response of DFVSPSPS was studied. The results indicate that the emerged Hopf bifurcation of DFVSPSPS is supercritical and the region on the low side of the bifurcation line is the stable region. Nonlinear head characteristics have a significant influence on the stability and dynamic response of DFVSPSPS. Nonlinear speed characteristics have an obvious effect on the stability and dynamic response of DFVSPSPS only under positive load disturbance and unstable surge tank. Nonlinear head characteristics are unfavorable for the stability of DFVSPSPS under positive load disturbance and favorable under negative load disturbance. A smaller flow inertia of penstock, a smaller head loss of penstock and a greater unit inertia time constant are favorable for the stability of DFVSPSPS. The stable region under the positive disturbance of active power is larger than that under the negative disturbance of active power. The harsh operating environment aggravates the degradation of pumped storage units (PSUs). Degradation trend prediction (DTP) provides important support for the condition-based maintenance of PSUs. However, the complexity of the performance degradation index (PDI) sequence poses a severe challenge of the reliability of DTP. Additionally, the accuracy of healthy model is often ignored, resulting in an unconvincing PDI. To solve these problems, a combined DTP model that integrates the maximal information coefficient (MIC), light gradient boosting machine (LGBM), variational mode decomposition (VMD) and gated recurrent unit (GRU) is proposed. Firstly, MIC-LGBM is utilized to generate a high-precision healthy model. MIC is applied to select the working parameters with the most relevance, then the LGBM is utilized to construct the healthy model. Afterwards, a performance degradation index (PDI) is generated based on the LGBM healthy model and monitoring data. Finally, the VMD-GRU prediction model is designed to achieve precise DTP under the complex PDI sequence. The proposed model is verified by applying it to a PSU located in Zhejiang province, China. The results reveal that the proposed model achieves the highest precision healthy model and the best prediction performance compared with other comparative models. The absolute average ( | A V G | ) and standard deviation ( S T D ) of fitting errors are reduced to 0.0275 and 0.9245, and the RMSE, MAE, and R 2 are 0.00395, 0.0032, and 0.9226 respectively, on average for two operating conditions. The doubly-fed variable speed pumped storage unit is a storage system suitable for joint operation with renewable energy sources to smooth the imbalance between renewable energy supply and electricity demand. However, its working principle and operation control are more complex than those of constant speed pumped storage. In this study, a nonlinear model of doubly-fed variable speed pumped storage units (VSPSUs) considering nonlinear characteristics of the head loss is established. The study finds that a supercritical Hopf bifurcation occurs in the system, and the area enclosed by the lower side of the bifurcation line and the coordinate axis is the stability domain of the system. The active power step perturbation from −0.3 to 0.3 will gradually reduce the area of the stability domain and narrow the adjustable range of the control parameters. In addition, the sensitivity of the model full state variables and the primary and secondary relationships to the changes of subsystem parameters is analyzed systematically using the trajectory sensitivity. It is found that there is a large difference in the sensitivity of different state variables to the parameters. The state variables are much more sensitive to the transfer coefficient of hydraulic turbine torque to guide vane opening, the unit inertia time constant, and the controller proportional gain change than other parameters, which are defined as highly sensitive parameters. Traditional reservoir operation mainly focuses on economic benefits, while ignoring the impacts on navigation. Thus, the economic operation of reservoirs considering navigational demands is of great significance for improving benefits. A navigation capacity evaluation method (NCEM), which evaluates the navigation capacity considering the influence of flow velocity and water level variation on navigation, is proposed to more effectively evaluate the navigation capacity. Based on two-dimensional hydrodynamic numerical simulation, the NCEM accurately calculates the navigation capacity according to detailed flow velocity and water level changes. In addition, a short-term multi-objective optimal operation model considering the upstream and downstream navigation and power generation is established. Then, the Strength Pareto Evolutionary Algorithm (SPEA2) is used to solve the model. To verify the rationality of the method and model, they are applied to the case study of the Xiangjiaba reservoir. The results demonstrate that the method and model can not only provide a series of operation schemes for decision makers of reservoirs, but also direct the ship to pass safely through the approach channel, implying a certain practical value and significance as a reference for the short-term optimal operation of reservoirs in the future. In this paper, the mixed integer linear programming (MILP) for solving unit commitment (UC) problems in a hybrid power system containing thermal, hydro, and wind power have been studied. To promote its efficiency, an improved MILP approach has been proposed, while the symmetric problem in MILP formulas has been solved by reforming hierarchical constraints. Experiments on different scales have been conducted to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed approach. The results indicate a dramatic efficiency promotion compared to other popular MILP approaches in large scale power systems. Additionally, the proposed approach has been applied in UC problems of the hybrid power system. Two indexes, fluctuation degree and output degree, have been proposed to investigate the performance of renewable energy sources (RES). Several experiments are also implemented and the results show that the integration of pumped hydroelectric energy storage (PHES) can decrease the output of thermal units, as well as balance wind power fluctuation according to the load demand. This study presents a two-step fault diagnosis scheme combined with statistical classification and random forests-based classification for rolling element bearings. Considering the inequality of features sensitivity in different diagnosis steps, the proposed method utilizes permutation entropy and variational mode decomposition to depict vibration signals under single scale and multiscale. In the first step, the permutation entropy features on the single scale of original signals are extracted and the statistical classification model based on Chebyshev's inequality is constructed to detect the faults with a preliminary acquaintance of the bearing condition. In the second step, vibration signals with fault conditions are firstly decomposed into a collection of intrinsic mode functions by using variational mode decomposition and then multiscale permutation entropy features derived from each mono-component are extracted to identify the specific fault types. In order to improve the classification ability of the characteristic data, the out-of-bag estimation of random forests is firstly employed to reelect and refine the original multiscale permutation entropy features. Then the refined features are considered as the input data to train the random forests-based classification model. Finally, the condition data of bearings with different fault conditions are employed to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. In view of the complex and changeable operating environment of pumped storage power stations and the noise and outliers in the modeling data, this study proposes a sparse robust least squares support vector machine (LSSVM) model based on the hybrid backtracking search algorithm for the model identification of a pumped turbine governing system. By introducing the maximum linearly independent set, the sparsity of the support vectors of the LSSVM model are realized, and the complexity is reduced. The robustness of the identification model to noise and outliers is enhanced using the weighted function based on improved normal distribution. In order to further improve the accuracy and generalization performance of the sparse robust LSSVM identification model, the model input variables, the kernel parameters, and the regularization parameters are optimized synchronously using a binary-real coded backtracking search algorithm. Experiments on two benchmark problems and a real-world application of a pumped turbine governing system in a pumped storage power station in China show that the proposed sparse robust LSSVM model optimized by the hybrid backtracking search algorithm can not only obtain higher identification accuracy, it also has better robustness and a higher generalization performance compared with the other existing models. As crucial equipment during industrial manufacture, the health status of rotating machinery affects the production efficiency and device safety. Hence, it is of great significance to diagnose rotating machinery faults, which can contribute to guarantee the running stability and plan for maintenance, thus promoting production efficiency and economic benefits. For this purpose, a hybrid fault diagnosis model with entropy-based feature extraction and SVM optimized by a chaos quantum sine cosine algorithm (CQSCA) is developed in this research. Firstly, the state-of-the-art variational mode decomposition (VMD) is utilized to decompose the vibration signals into sets of components, during which process the preset parameter K is confirmed with the central frequency observation method. Subsequently, the permutation entropy values of all components are computed to constitute the feature vectors corresponding to different kind of signals. Later, the newly developed sine cosine algorithm (SCA) is employed and improved with chaotic initialization by a Duffing system and quantum technique to optimize the support vector machine (SVM) model, with which the fault pattern is recognized. Additionally, the availability of the optimized SVM with CQSCA was revealed in pattern recognition experiments. Finally, the proposed hybrid fault diagnosis approach was employed for engineering applications as well as contrastive analysis. The comparative results show that the proposed method achieved the best training accuracy 99.5% and best testing accuracy 97.89%. For solving the parameter optimization problem of a hydraulic turbine governing system (HTGS) with a delayed water hammer (DWH) effect, a Mixed-Strategy-based Whale Optimization Algorithm (MSWOA) is proposed in this paper, in which three improved strategies are designed and integrated to promote the optimization ability. Firstly, the movement strategies of WOA have been improved to balance the exploration and exploitation. In the improved movement strategies, a dynamic ratio based on improved JAYA algorithm is applied on the strategy of searching for prey and a chaotic dynamic weight is designed for improving the strategies of bubble-net attacking and encircling prey. Secondly, a guidance of the elite's memory inspired by Particle swarm optimization (PSO) is proposed to lead the movement of the population to accelerate the convergence speed. Thirdly, the mutation strategy based on the sinusoidal chaotic map is employed to avoid prematurity and local optimum points. The proposed MSWOA are compared with six popular meta-heuristic optimization algorithms on 23 benchmark functions in numerical experiments and the results show that the MSWOA has achieved significantly better performance than others. Finally, the MSWOA is applied on parameter identification problem of HTGS with a DWH effect, and the comparative results confirm the effectiveness and identification accuracy of the proposed method. This paper proposes a multi-objective optimization method for the start-up strategy of pumped storage units (PSU) for the first time. In the multi-objective optimization method, the speed rise time and the overshoot during the process of the start-up are taken as the objectives. A precise simulation platform is built for simulating the transient process of start-up, and for calculating the objectives based on the process. The Multi-objective Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (MOPSO) is adopted to optimize the widely applied start-up strategies based on one-stage direct guide vane control (DGVC), and two-stage DGVC. Based on the Pareto Front obtained, a multi-objective decision-making method based on the relative objective proximity is used to sort the solutions in the Pareto Front. Start-up strategy optimization for a PSU of a pumped storage power station in Jiangxi Province in China is conducted in experiments. The results show that: (1) compared with the single objective optimization, the proposed multi-objective optimization of start-up strategy not only greatly shortens the speed rise time and the speed overshoot, but also makes the speed curve quickly stabilize; (2) multi-objective optimization of strategy based on two-stage DGVC achieves better solution for a quick and smooth start-up of PSU than that of the strategy based on one-stage DGVC.
