Understanding plastic deformation behaviour is key to optimising the mechanical properties of nano-polycrystalline layered composites. This study employs the molecular dynamics (MD) simulation to comprehensively investigate the effects of various factors, such as grain sizes, strain rates, and the interlayer thicknesses of the intermetallic compounds (IMCs), on the plastic deformation behaviour of nano-polycrystalline Al/Mg layered composites. Our findings reveal that the influence of grain size on deformation behaviour is governed by the strain rate, and an increase in grain size is inversely proportional to yield stress at low strain rates, whereas it is positively proportional to tensile stress at high strain rates. Moreover, an optimal thickness of the intermediate layer contributes to enhanced composite strength, whereas an excessive thickness leads to reduced tensile strength due to the fewer grain boundaries (GBs) available for accommodating dislocations. The reinforcing impact of the intermediate IMCs layer diminishes at excessive strain rates, as the grains struggle to accommodate substantial large strains within a limited timeframe encountered at high strain rates. The insights into grain sizes, strain rates, and interlayer thicknesses obtained from this study enable the tailored development of nanocomposites with optimal mechanical characteristics. As a typical warm-season grass, bermudagrass growth and turf quality begin to decrease when the environmental temperature drops below 20 °C. The current study investigated the differential responses of three bermudagrass genotypes to chilling stress (8/4 °C) for 15 days and then freezing stress (2/−2 °C) for 2 days. The three genotypes exhibited significant variation in chilling and freezing tolerance, and Chuannong-3, common bermudagrass 001, and Tifdwarf were ranked as cold-tolerant, -intermediate, and -sensitive genotypes based on evaluations of chlorophyll content, the photochemical efficiency of photosystem II, oxidative damage, and cell membrane stability, respectively. Chuannong-3 achieved better tolerance through enhancing the antioxidant defense system to stabilize cell membrane and reactive oxygen species homeostasis after being subjected to chilling and freezing stresses. Chuannong-3 also downregulated the ethylene signaling pathway by improving CdCTR1 expression and suppressing the transcript levels of CdEIN3-1 and CdEIN3-2; however, it upregulated the hydrogen sulfide signaling pathway via an increase in CdISCS expression under cold stress. In addition, the molecular basis of cold tolerance could be associated with the mediation of key genes in the heat shock pathway (CdHSFA-2b, CdHSBP-1, CdHSP22, and CdHSP40) and the CdOSMOTIN in Chuannong-3 because the accumulation of stress-defensive proteins, including heat shock proteins and osmotin, plays a positive role in osmoprotection, osmotic adjustment, or the repair of denatured proteins as molecular chaperones under cold stress. The current findings give an insight into the physiological and molecular mechanisms of cold tolerance in the new cultivar Chuannong-3, which provides valuable information for turfgrass breeders and practitioners. Robert Van Gulik, one of the twentieth century's most prominent sinologists and detective writers, has made significant contributions to the study of Chinese cultures but received inadequate scholarly appraisal until the twenty-first century. Although Van Gulik's Judge Dee mysteries have been well received informally among ordinary readers and scholars, little academic attention has been devoted to Judge Dee's trials of evil clergy due to their covert representation in Van Gulik's narration. This paper pays attention to crimes committed by religious leaders and members of orders to reveal an implicit religion-crime relationship in Van Gulik's works on Judge Dee with the help of Kenneth Burke's pentadic criticism. In our analysis, we find that Van Gulik differentiates between good and evil disciples, the acts of the disciples and the beliefs of religions, and non-mainstream and orthodox religion, presenting a heterogeneous religious crime landscape. Beneficial effects of spermidine (Spd) on alleviating abiotic stress damage have been explored in plants for hundreds of years, but limited information is available about its roles in regulating lipids signaling and metabolism during heat stress. White clover (Trifolium repens) plants were pretreated with 70 μM Spd and then subjected to high temperature (38/33 °C) stress for 20 days. To further investigate the effect of Spd on heat tolerance, transgenic Arabidopsisthaliana overexpressing a TrSAMS encoding a key enzyme involved in Spd biosynthesis was exposed to high temperature (38/33 °C) stress for 10 days. A significant increase in endogenous Spd content in white clover by exogenous application of Spd or the TrSAMS overexpression in Arabidopsisthaliana could effectively mitigate heat-induced growth retardation, oxidative damage to lipids, and declines in photochemical efficiency and cell membrane stability. Based on the analysis of metabolomics, the amino acids and vitamins metabolism, biosynthesis of secondary metabolites, and lipids metabolism were main metabolic pathways regulated by the Spd in cool-season white clover under heat stress. Further analysis of lipidomics found the TrSAMS-transgenic plants maintained relatively higher accumulations of total lipids, eight phospholipids (PC, phosphatidylcholine; PG, phosphatidylglycerol; PS, phosphatidylserine; CL, cardiolipin; LPA, lysophosphatidic acid; LPC, lyso phosphatidylcholine; LPG, lyso phosphatidylglycerol; and LPI, lyso phosphatidylinositol), one glycoglycerolipid (DGDG, digalactosyl diacylglycerol), and four sphingolipids (Cer, ceramide; CerG2GNAc1, dihexosyl N-acetylhexosyl ceramide; Hex1Cer, hexosyl ceramide; and ST, sulfatide), higher ratio of DGDG: monogalactosyl diacylglycerol (MGDG), and lower unsaturation level than wild-type Arabidopsisthaliana in response to heat stress. Spd-induced lipids accumulation and remodeling could contribute to better maintenance of membrane stability, integrity, and functionality when plants underwent a long period of heat stress. In addition, the Spd significantly up-regulated PIP2 and PA signaling pathways, which was beneficial to signal perception and transduction for stress defense. Single-phase high-entropy alloys with compositionally disordered elemental arrangements have excellent strength, but show a serious embrittlement effect with increasing strength. Precipitation-hardened high-entropy alloys, such as those strengthened by L12-type ordered intermetallics, possess a superior synergy of strength and ductility. In this work, we employ first-principles calculations and thermodynamic simulations to explore the atomic interactions and order–disorder transitions in FeCoNiAl1−xTix high-entropy alloys. Our calculated results indicate that the atomic interactions depend on the atomic size of the alloy components. The thermodynamic stability behaviors of L12 binary intermetallics are quite diverse, while their atomic arrangements are short-range in FeCoNiAl1−xTix high-entropy alloys. Moreover, the order–disorder transition temperatures decrease with increasing Ti content in FeCoNiAl1−xTix high-entropy alloys, the characteristics of order–disorder transition from first-principles calculations are in line with experimental observations and CALPHAD simulations. The results of this work provide a technique strategy for proper control of the order–disorder transitions that can be used for further optimizing the microstructure characteristics as well as the mechanical properties of FeCoNiAl1−xTixhigh-entropy alloys. Soil salinization has become a serious challenge to modern agriculture worldwide. The purpose of the study was to reveal salt tolerance induced by spermine (Spm) associated with alterations in water and redox homeostasis, photosynthetic performance, and global metabolites reprogramming based on analyses of physiological responses and metabolomics in creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera). Plants pretreated with or without 0.5 mM Spm were subjected to salt stress induced by NaCl for 25 days in controlled growth chambers. Results showed that a prolonged period of salt stress caused a great deal of sodium (Na) accumulation, water loss, photoinhibition, and oxidative damage to plants. However, exogenous application of Spm significantly improved endogenous spermidine (Spd) and Spm contents, followed by significant enhancement of osmotic adjustment (OA), photosynthesis, and antioxidant capacity in leaves under salt stress. The Spm inhibited salt-induced Na accumulation but did not affect potassium (K) content. The analysis of metabolomics demonstrated that the Spm increased intermediate metabolites of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) shunt (GABA, glutamic acid, and alanine) and tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle (aconitic acid) under salt stress. In addition, the Spm also up-regulated the accumulation of multiple amino acids (glutamine, valine, isoleucine, methionine, serine, lysine, tyrosine, phenylalanine, and tryptophan), sugars (mannose, fructose, sucrose-6-phosphate, tagatose, and cellobiose), organic acid (gallic acid), and other metabolites (glycerol) in response to salt stress. These metabolites played important roles in OA, energy metabolism, signal transduction, and antioxidant defense under salt stress. More importantly, the Spm enhanced GABA shunt and the TCA cycle for energy supply in leaves. Current findings provide new evidence about the regulatory roles of the Spm in alleviating salt damage to plants associated with global metabolites reprogramming and metabolic homeostasis. Root-associated microorganisms, which can be recruited specially by plants to cope with environmental stress under extreme conditions, are one of the major mediators of nutrient exchange between plants and the environment. To obtain more crop-beneficial microbes, rhizosphere bacteria of Désirée potatoes cultivated in poor and alkaline soil have been studied. The screening of 83 strains with incomplete identical 16S rDNA sequences showed that 47 strains produced indole acetic acid (IAA), with contents ranging from 0.2 to 42 mg/L, and seven strains were phosphorus-solubilizing, among which six strains significantly increased the growth rate of potato plants. Thirty-seven strains produced siderophore and four strains were zinc-solubilizing, among which three strains significantly alleviated the chlorosis of potato plants. In all of the isolates, the species Variovorax soli (ST98) and Cellulomonas biazotea (ST118) were first found to possess an IAA-secreting ability; the species Leifsonia aquatica (ST172) and Leifsonia naganoensis (ST177) and the genus Sutcliffiella (ST11) were first discovered to be capable of phosphorus solubilization; the species Chryseobacterium daecheongense (ST32) was the first reported to be capable of zinc solubilization; and the species V. soli (ST98), C. biazotea (ST118) and L. naganoensis (ST177) were first found to be capable of plant growth promotion. The discovery of multiple functional bacteria enriched the resources of plant growth-promoting bacteria and provided a foundation for biofertilizer production to improve soil conditions and crop production. There is a continuing need to develop effective materials for the environmental remediation of copper-contaminated sites. Nano-MnO2–biochar composites (NMBCs) were successfully synthesized through the reduction of potassium permanganate by ethanol in a biochar suspension. The physicochemical properties and morphology of NMBCs were examined, and the Cu(II) adsorption properties of this material were determined using various adsorption isotherms and kinetic models. The adsorption capacity of NMBCs for Cu(II), which was enhanced by increasing the pH from 3 to 6, was much larger than that of biochar or nano-MnO2. The maximum adsorption capacity of NMBCs for Cu(II) was 142.02 mg/g, which was considerably greater than the maximum adsorption capacities of biochar (26.88 mg/g) and nano-MnO2 (93.91 mg/g). The sorption process for Cu(II) on NMBCs fitted very well to a pseudo-second-order model (R2 > 0.99). Moreover, this process was endothermic, spontaneous, and hardly influenced by ionic strength. The mechanism of Cu(II) adsorption on NMBCs mainly involves the formation of complexes between Cu(II) and O-containing groups (e.g., COO–Cu and Mn–O–Cu). As an energy storage technology, supercapacitors (SCs) have become an important part of many electronic systems because of their high-power density, long cycle life, and maintenance-free characteristics. However, the widespread development and use of electronics, including SCs, have led to the generation of a large amount of e-waste. In addition, achieving compatibility between stability and biodegradability has been a prominent challenge for implantable electronics. Therefore, environmentally friendly SCs based on polypyrrole (PPy)-stabilized polypeptide (FF) are demonstrated in this study. The fully degradable SC has a layer-by-layer structure, including polylactic acid/chitosan (PLA–C) support layers, current collectors (Mg), FF/PPy composite layers, and a polyvinyl alcohol/phosphate buffer solution (PVA/PBS) hydrogel. It has the advantages of being light, thin, flexible, and biocompatible. After 5000 cycles in air, the capacitance retention remains at up to 94.7%. The device could stably operate for 7 days in a liquid environment and completely degrade in vitro within 90 days without any adverse effect on the environment. Background: Atherosclerosis is a fundamental pathological process responded to some serious cardiovascular events. Although the cholesterol-lowering drugs are widely prescribed for atherosclerosis therapy, it is still the leading cause of death in the developed world. Here we measured the effects of compound K in atherosclerosis formation and investigated the probably mechanisms of the anti-antherosclerosis roles of compound K. Methods: We treated the atherosclerotic model animals (apoE-/- mice on western diet) with compound K and measured the size of atherosclerotic lesions, inflammatory cytokine levels and serum lipid profile. Peritoneal macrophages were collected in vitro for the foam cell and inflammasome experiments. Results: Our results show that treatment with compound K dose-dependently attenuates the formation of atherosclerotic plaques by 55% through activation of reverse cholesterol transport pathway, reduction of systemic inflammatory cytokines and inhibition of local inflammasome activity. Compound K increases the cholesterol efflux of macrophage-derived foam cells, and reduces the inflammasome activity in cholesterol crystal stimulated macrophages. The activation of LXR α may contribute to the athero-protective effects of compound K. Conclusion: These observations provide evidence for an athero-protective effect of compound K via LXR αactivation, and support its further evaluation as a potential effective modulator for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis. Apobec-1 complementation factor (A1CF) is a heterogeneous nuclear ribonuceloprotein (hnRNP) and mediates apolipoprotein-B mRNA editing. A1CF can promote the regeneration of the liver by post-transcriptionally stabilizing Interleukin-6 (IL-6) mRNA. It also contains two transcriptional variants-A1CF64 and A1CF65, distinguished by the appearance of a 24-nucleotide motif which contributes to the corresponding eight-amino acid motif of EIYMNVPV. For the first time, we demonstrated that the EIYMNVPV motif was essential for A1CF nucleus localization, A1CF deficient of the EIYMNVPV motif, A1CF (-8aa) showed cytoplasm distribution. More importantly, we found that A1CF (-8aa), but not its full-length counterpart, can promote proliferation of MDA-MB-231 cells accompanied with increased level of IL-6 mRNA. Furthermore, silencing of IL-6 attenuated A1CF (-8aa)-induced proliferation in MDA-MB-231 cells. In conclusion, notably, these findings suggest that A1CF (-8aa) promoted proliferation of MDA-MB-231 cells in vitro viewing IL-6 as a target. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) possess an important regulating effect among numerous renal diseases, while their functions in the process of epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) after podocyte injury remain unclear. The purpose of our study is to identify the potential functions of mi-30a in EMT of podocytes and explore the underlying mechanisms of mi-30a in the impaired podocytes. The results revealed that downregulation of mi-30a in podocyte injury animal models and patients, highly induced the mesenchymal markers of EMT including Collagen I, Fibronectin and Snail. Furthermore, overexpression of mi-30a enhances epithelial markers (E-cadherin) but diminished mesenchymal markers (Collagen I, Fibronectin and Snail) in podocytes. In addition, we established mi-30a target NFATc3, an important transcription factor of Non-canonical Wnt signaling pathway. More importantly, our findings demonstrated that the augmentation of mi-30a level in podocytes inhibits the nuclear translocation of NFATc3 to protect cytoskeleton disorder or rearrangement. A Cu-1.79Ti-0.39Cr-0.1Mg (wt.%) alloy was prepared by a vacuum induction melting furnace in a high-purity argon atmosphere. The effects of room temperature rolling and cryogenic rolling on the microstructure, textures, and mechanical properties of the alloy were investigated by means of electron backscatter diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray diffraction. The results show that the hardness of the cryogenically rolled alloy is 18–30 HV higher than that of the room temperature rolled alloy at any tested rolling reduction. The yield strength and tensile strength of the alloy cryogenically rolled by 90% reduction are 723 MPa and 796 MPa, respectively. With the increase of rolling reduction, the orientation density of the Cube texture decreases, while the Brass texture increases. The Brass texture is preferred especially during the cryogenic rolling, suggesting that the cross-slip is inhibited at the cryogenic temperature. The dislocation densities of Cu-Ti-Cr-Mg alloy increase significantly during the deformation, finally reaching 23.03 × 10−14 m−2 and 29.98 × 10−14 m−2 after a 90% reduction for the room temperature rolled and cryogenically rolled alloys, respectively. This difference could be attributed to the impediment effect of cryogenic temperature on dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization. Highly accurate measurements of infrared systems cannot be achieved without precise radiometric calibrations. In order to correctly interpret and process infrared images and monitor the performance of infrared cameras, their radiometric calibration is also required periodically. In this paper, an equivalent calibration method is proposed based on an internal blackbody baffle. It is used for the replacement of a large surface-source blackbody covering the aperture for the field calibration of large-aperture equipment. Subsequently, the expressions of the equivalent calibration conversion function (ECCF) are derived based on the grayscale response of the camera and the calibration models of the two methods, and experimental measurements and fits are performed using a cooled mid-wave infrared camera. The results show that the measured functional form is consistent with the physical meaning. Moreover, in the target imaging experiments, the results of the inversion using the equivalent calibration conversion function and the results of the direct calibration of the external blackbody are largely consistent with the average error of 0.198% between the two, and the maximum error is within 1%. The maximum error between the inversion result of radiation brightness and the actual value of the target is 6.29%, and the accuracy fully meets the radiometric measurement requirements. In this paper, the fault detection in uncertain multivariate nonlinear non-Gaussian stochastic systems is further investigated. Entropy is introduced to characterize the stochastic behavior of the detection errors, and the entropy optimization principle is established for the fault detection problem. The principle is to maximize the entropies of the stochastic detection errors in the presence of faults and to minimize the entropies of the detection errors in the presence of disturbances. In order to calculate the entropies, the formulations of the joint probability density functions (JPDFs) of the stochastic errors are presented in terms of the known JPDFs of both the disturbances and the faults. By using the novel performance indexes and the formulations for the entropies of the detection errors, new fault detection design methods are provided for the considered multivariate nonlinear non-Gaussian plants. The rising frequency of extreme weather events and global warming are greatly challenging pastoral ecosystem productivity, particularly in the temperate climate-transition regions. While this could cause greater gross primary production (GPP) mainly contributed by the warm-season vegetation, the consequences for the dynamics of net ecosystem exchange (NEE) and hydrological responses (e.g., evapotranspiration, ET) on an ecosystem level are poorly known. Here, we investigated the evolution of plant phenology, nutritive value, energy balance, and carbon/water budgets of a cool-season dominated pastoral ecosystem in the temperate zone; integrating both eddy covariance (EC) flux measurement and simulation modeling-based uncertainty analysis. Throughout the two-year duration (2017–2018) of this study, the entire pasture ecosystem remained a strong carbon sink (NEE = −1.23 and −1.95 kg C m−2, respectively) with 74% and 62% of available energy loss explained by EC fluxes, respectively. The cumulative ET was 735.8 and 796.8 mm, respectively; and the overall ecosystem water use efficiency (EWUE) were calculated as 6.5 g C kg−1 water across both growing seasons. The above-ground biomass yield agreed with the cumulative GPP and was inversely correlated with grass nutritive value. The uncertainty analysis indicated that accurate EC flux gap-filling models could be constructed using support vector machine trained time-series models (NEE, R2 = 0.77, RMSE = 11.8; ET, R2 = 0.90, RMSE = 73.8). The performance benchmarking tests indicated that REddyProc-based gap-filling performance was very limiting and highly variable (NEE, R2 = 0.21–0.64; ET, R2 = 0.79–0.87), particularly for estimating NEE. Overall, the warm-season vegetation encroachment greatly filled the production gap of cool-season grasses, leading to greater cumulative NEE and EWUE on a system level, compared with those from many other reported field-crop or grassland studies using EC approaches. The complex and dynamic nature of grassland ecosystems greatly challenged the conventional REddyProc-based EC flux gap-filling performance. γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) plays an important role in regulating stress tolerance in plants. Purposes of this study was to determine the effect of an exogenous supply of GABA on tolerance to water stress in creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera), and further reveal the GABA-induced key mechanisms related to water balance, nitrogen (N) metabolism and nitric oxide (NO) production in response to water stress. Plants were pretreated with or without 0.5 mM GABA solution in the roots for 3 days, and then subjected to water stress induced by −0.52 MPa polyethylene glycol 6000 for 12 days. The results showed that water stress caused leaf water deficit, chlorophyll (Chl) loss, oxidative damage (increases in superoxide anion, hydrogen peroxide, malondialdehyde, and protein carbonyl content), N insufficiency, and metabolic disturbance. However, the exogenous addition of GABA significantly increased endogenous GABA content, osmotic adjustment and antioxidant enzyme activities (superoxide dismutase, catalase, dehydroascorbate reductase, glutathione reductase and monodehydroascorbate reductase), followed by effectively alleviating water stress damage, including declines in oxidative damage, photoinhibition, and water and Chl loss. GABA supply not only provided more available N, but also affected N metabolism through activating nitrite reductase and glutamine synthetase activities under water stress. The supply of GABA did not increase glutamate content and glutamate decarboxylase activity, but enhanced glutamate dehydrogenase activity, which might indicate that GABA promoted the conversion and utilization of glutamate for maintaining Chl synthesis and tricarboxylic acid cycle when creeping bentgrass underwent water stress. In addition, GABA-induced NO production, depending on nitrate reductase and NO-associated protein pathways, could be associated with the enhancement of antioxidant defense. γ-Aminobutyric acid (GABA) participates in the regulation of adaptability to abiotic stress in plants. The objectives of this study were to investigate the effects of GABA priming on improving thermotolerance in creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) based on analyses of physiology and proteome using iTRAQ technology. GABA-treated plants maintained significantly higher endogenous GABA content, photochemical efficiency, performance index on absorption basis, membrane stability, and osmotic adjustment (OA) than untreated plants during a prolonged period of heat stress (18 days), which indicated beneficial effects of GABA on alleviating heat damage. Protein profiles showed that plants were able to regulate some common metabolic processes including porphyrin and chlorophyll metabolism, glutathione metabolism, pyruvate metabolism, carbon fixation, and amino acid metabolism for heat acclimation. It is noteworthy that the GABA application particularly regulated arachidonic acid metabolism and phenylpropanoid biosynthesis related to better thermotolerance. In response to heat stress, the GABA priming significantly increased the abundances of Cu/ZnSOD and APX4 that were consistent with superoxide dismutase (SOD) and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) activities. An effective and accurate power flow algorithm provides control references for active power dispatch and initial steady state operating points, used for stability analysis, short-circuit calculations, and electromagnetic transient simulations, which is not only a fundamental precondition to analyze the system operating conditions, but also the basis to improve the accuracy of power flow and DC voltage control of the multi-terminal voltage source converter-based high voltage direct current (VSC-HVDC). This paper proposes a nodal voltage-based universal steady-state power flow algorithm for the newly-developed bipolar multi-terminal VSC-HVDC (VSC-MTDC). Firstly, as the positive-pole and negative-pole DC network of the bipolar VSC-MTDC can be operated individually, a bipolar power flow alternating iterative method is proposed here to obtain the positive/negative-pole DC network power flow. Secondly, a series of nodal equivalent methods involving various control strategies are proposed for the universal power flow algorithm. Then the detailed calculation procedure and a general MATLAB(TM) program for the universal power flow algorithm is presented. A typical 4-terminal bipolar VSC-MTDC system was built in the PSCAD/EMTDC to verify the validity of the proposed algorithm, and the results are discussed here. Moreover, the calculation results of more complex bipolar VSC-MTDC systems under different operating conditions, employing the proposed universal power flow algorithm, are presented to illustrate its universality and efficiency. The infection of implanted biomaterial scaffolds presents a major challenge. Existing therapeutic solutions, such as antibiotic treatment and silver nanoparticle-containing scaffolds are becoming increasingly impractical because of the growth of antibiotic resistance and the toxicity of silver nanoparticles. We present here a novel concept to overcome these limitations, an electrospun polycaprolactone (PCL) scaffold functionalised with zinc oxide nanowires (ZnO NWs). This study assessed the antibacterial capabilities and biocompatibility of PCL/ZnO scaffolds. The fabricated scaffolds were characterised by SEM and EDX, which showed that the ZnO NWs were successfully incorporated and distributed in the electrospun PCL scaffolds. The antibacterial properties were investigated by co-culturing PCL/ZnO scaffolds with Staphylococcus aureus. Bacterial colonisation was reduced to 51.3% compared to a PCL-only scaffold. The biocompatibility of the PCL/ZnO scaffolds was assessed by culturing them with HaCaT cells. The PCL scaffolds exhibited no changes in cell metabolic activity with the addition of the ZnO nanowires. The antibacterial and biocompatibility properties make PCL/ZnO a good choice for implanted scaffolds, and this work lays a foundation for ZnO NWs-infused PCL scaffolds in the potential clinical application of tissue engineering. Aluminum (Al) toxicity is a major limiting factor for plant growth and crop production in acidic soils. This study aims to investigate the effects of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) priming on mitigating acid-Al toxicity to creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) associated with changes in plant growth, photosynthetic parameters, antioxidant defense, key metabolites, and genes related to organic acids metabolism. Thirty-seven-old plants were primed with or without 0.5 mM GABA for three days and then subjected to acid-Al stress (5 mmol/L AlCl3·6H2O, pH 4.35) for fifteen days. The results showed that acid-Al stress significantly increased the accumulation of Al and also restricted aboveground and underground growths, photosynthesis, photochemical efficiency, and osmotic balance, which could be effectively alleviated by GABA priming. The application of GABA significantly activated antioxidant enzymes, including superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, and ascorbate peroxidase, to reduce oxidative damage to cells under acid-Al stress. Metabolomics analysis demonstrated that the GABA pretreatment significantly induced the accumulation of many metabolites such as quinic acid, pyruvic acid, shikimic acid, glycine, threonine, erythrose, glucose-6-phosphate, galactose, kestose, threitol, ribitol, glycerol, putrescine, galactinol, and myo-inositol associated with osmotic, antioxidant, and metabolic homeostases under acid-Al stress. In addition, the GABA priming significantly up-regulated genes related to the transportation of malic acid and citric acid in leaves in response to acid-Al stress. Current findings indicated GABA-induced tolerance to acid-Al stress in relation to scavenging of reactive oxygen species, osmotic adjustment, and accumulation and transport of organic metabolites in leaves. Soil phosphorus (P) limitation in karst areas has severely constrained soil quality and land productivity. To enhance silage maize yield and quality and alleviate and/or balance the low phosphorus availability in the karst areas of China, the experiment investigated the effects of different tillage and residue retention practices on silage maize yield and quality and soil phosphorus in this region. The treatment set included: conventional tillage (CT), conventional tillage and root stubble retention (CTH), conventional tillage and mulch (CTM), conventional tillage and crushing and incorporation of hairy vetch by tillage (CTR), no tillage (NT), no tillage and root stubble retention (NTH), no tillage and mulch (NTM), and no tillage and living mulch (NTLM). The results showed that CTM, NTM, CTR, and NTLM significantly increased the height and LAI of silage maize compared with the CT, NT, and NTH treatments. CTM, CTR, and NTM significantly enhanced maize yield. Compared with conventional tillage, not tilling had a more pronounced improvement in silage quality, whereas residue retention hardly affected corn quality. In addition, although not tilling does not significantly increase acid phosphatase activity, it appeared to be advantageous in increasing soil microbial phosphorus and available phosphorus content when combined with cover crop measures. Ultimately, we concluded that NTM and NTLM are beneficial for silage maize yield and quality and soil phosphorus content in karst areas and verified the advantages of combining no tillage and residue retention practices for silage maize production and soil phosphorus improvement in the karst areas of China. Serum bilirubin is an important biomarker for the diagnosis of various types of liver diseases and blood disorders. A polydopamine/gold nanoclusters composite film was fabricated for the fluorescent sensing of free bilirubin. Bovine serum albumin (BSA)-stabilized gold nanoclusters (AuNCs) were used as probes for biorecognition. The polydopamine film was utilized as an adhesion layer for immobilization of AuNCs. When the composite film was exposed to free bilirubin, due to the complex that was formed between BSA and free bilirubin, the fluorescence intensity of the composite film was gradually weakened as the bilirubin concentration increased. The fluorescence quenching ratio (F0/F) was linearly proportional to free bilirubin over the concentration range of 0.8~50 μmol/L with a limit of detection of 0.61 ± 0.12 μmol/L (S/N = 3). The objective of this study was to determine the effect of soaking with γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) on white clover (Trifolium repens cv. Haifa) seed germination under salt stress induced by 100 mM NaCl. Seeds soaking with GABA (1 μM) significantly alleviated salt-induced decreases in endogenous GABA content, germination percentage, germination vigor, germination index, shoot and root length, fresh and dry weight, and root activity of seedling during seven days of germination. Exogenous application of GABA accelerated starch catabolism via the activation of amylase and also significantly reduced water-soluble carbohydrate, free amino acid, and free proline content in seedlings under salt stress. In addition, improved antioxidant enzyme activities (SOD, GPOX, CAT, APX, DHAR, GR and MDHR) and gene transcript levels (Cu/ZnSOD, FeSOD, MnSOD, CAT, GPOX, APX, MDHR, GPX and GST) was induced by seeds soaking with GABA, followed by decreases in O2∙−, H2O2, and MDA accumulation during germination under salt stress. Seeds soaking with GABA could also significantly improve Na+/K+ content and transcript levels of genes encoding Na+/K+ transportation (HKT1, HKT8, HAL2, H+-ATPase and SOS1) in seedlings of white clover. Moreover, exogenous GABA significantly induced the accumulation of dehydrins and expression of genes encoding dehydrins (SK2, Y2K, Y2SK, and dehydrin b) in seedlings under salt stress. These results indicate that GABA mitigates the salt damage during seeds germination through enhancing starch catabolism and the utilization of sugar and amino acids for the maintenance of growth, improving the antioxidant defense for the alleviation of oxidative damage, increasing Na+/K+ transportation for the osmotic adjustment, and promoting dehydrins accumulation for antioxidant and osmotic adjustment under salt stress. White clover is a widely grown temperate legume forage with high nutritional value. Research on the functional genomics of white clover requires a stable and efficient transformation system. In this study, we successfully induced calluses from the cotyledons and leaves of 10 different white clover varieties. The results showed that the callus formation rate in the cotyledons did not vary significantly among the varieties, but the highest callus formation rate was observed in 'Koala' leaves. Subsequently, different concentrations of antioxidants and hormones were tested on the browning rate and differentiation ability of the calluses, respectively. The results showed that the browning rate was the lowest on MS supplemented with 20 mg L−1 AgNO3 and 25 mg L−1 VC, respectively, and the differentiation rate was highest on MS supplemented with 1 mg L−1 6-BA, 1 mg L−1 KT and 0.5 mg L−1 NAA. In addition, the transformation system for Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation of 4-day-old leaves was optimized to some extent and obtained a positive callus rate of 8.9% using green fluorescent protein (GFP) as a marker gene. According to our data, by following this optimized protocol, the transformation efficiency could reach 2.38%. Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) may play a positive role in regulating plant tolerance to drought or heat stress. The objectives of this study were to investigate the physiological effects of GABA on tolerance of creeping bentgrass (Agrostis stolonifera) to heat and drought stress and to determine whether enhanced heat and drought tolerance due to GABA treatment was associated with the up-regulation of selected genes and transcriptional factors involved in stress protection. Creeping bentgrass (cultivar “Penncross”) plants were treated with 0.5 mM GABA or water (untreated control) as a foliar spray and were subsequently exposed to heat stress (35/30 °C, day/night), drought stress by withholding irrigation, or non-stress conditions in controlled-environment growth chambers. Exogenous application of GABA significantly improved plant tolerance to heat and drought stress, as reflected by increased leaf water content, cell membrane stability, and chlorophyll content. The analysis of gene transcript level revealed that exogenous GABA up-regulated the expression of ABF3, POD, APX, HSP90, DHN3, and MT1 during heat stress and the expression of CDPK26, MAPK1, ABF3, WRKY75, MYB13, HSP70, MT1, 14-3-3, and genes (SOD, CAT, POD, APX, MDHAR, DHAR, and GR) encoding antioxidant enzymes during drought stress. Simple Summary: The landscape of gastric cancer treatment has changed owing to the widespread use of immune checkpoint inhibitors. Only a subset of patients, though, have reaped substantial benefits. One of the crucial issues in current research is seeking efficacious biomarkers to identify favorable populations for immunotherapy. In this review, we present a summary of the predictive biomarkers that have lately been exploited or investigated in clinical studies. Gastric cancer is the fifth most prevalent cancer and the fourth leading cause of cancer death globally. Delayed diagnosis and pronounced histological and molecular variations increase the complexity and challenge of treatment. Pharmacotherapy, which for a long time was systemic chemotherapy based on 5-fluorouracil, is the mainstay of management for advanced gastric cancer. Trastuzumab and programmed cell death 1 (PD-1) inhibitors have altered the therapeutic landscape, contributing to noticeably prolonged survivorship in patients with metastatic gastric cancer. However, research has revealed that immunotherapy is only beneficial to some individuals. Biomarkers, such as programmed cell death ligand 1 (PD-L1), microsatellite instability (MSI), and tumor mutational load (TMB), have been shown to correlate with immune efficacy in numerous studies and are increasingly employed for the selection of patients most likely to respond to immunotherapy. Gut microorganisms, genetic mutations like POLE/POLD1 and NOTCH4, tumor lymphoid infiltrating cells (TILs), and other novel biomarkers have the potential to develop into new predictors. A smart sensing platform based on a triboelectric nanogenerator (TENG) possesses various advantages such as self-powering, convenience, real-time and biocompatibility. However, the detection limit of the TENG-based sensor is required to be improved. In this study, a high performance TENG-based glucose sensor was proposed by using the Ti3C2Tx (MXene)/graphene oxide (GO) composite electrode. The MXene and GO nanosheets are popular 2D materials which possessed high conductivity and a rich surface functional group. The MXene/GO thin films were prepared through electrostatic self-assembly technology, which can effectively impede the agglomeration of two nanoflakes. The as-prepared MXene/GO film presented outstanding mechanical property. To figure out the relationship between the nanostructure of MXene/GO film and the TENG, a series of MXene/GO-based TENG with different GO sizes was characterized. As a result, the TENG with 400 nm GO demonstrated the highest output performance. Subsequently, the optimized TENG was used in glucose detection application without the assistance of a glucose enzyme. Dipeptidyl peptidase III (DPP III) is a zinc-dependent enzyme that specifically hydrolyzes dipeptides from the N-terminal of different-length peptides, and it is involved in a number of physiological processes. Here, DPP III with an atypical pentapeptide zinc binding motif (HELMH) was identified from Corallococcus sp. EGB. It was shown that the activity of recombined CoDPP III was optimal at 50 °C and pH 7.0 with high thermostability up to 60 °C. Unique to CoDPP III, the crystal structure of the ligand-free enzyme was determined as a dimeric and closed form. The relatively small inter-domain cleft creates a narrower entrance to the substrate binding site and the unfavorable binding of the bulky naphthalene ring. The ectopic expression of CoDPP III in M. xanthus DK1622 resulted in a 12 h head start in fruiting body development compared with the wild type. Additionally, the A-signal prepared from the starving DK1622-CoDPP III rescued the developmental defect of the asgA mutant, and the fruiting bodies were more numerous and closely packed. Bone injuries are common in clinical practice. Given the clear disadvantages of autologous bone grafting, more efficient and safer bone grafts need to be developed. Bone is a multidirectional and anisotropic piezoelectric material that exhibits an electrical microenvironment; therefore, electrical signals play a very important role in the process of bone repair, which can effectively promote osteoblast differentiation, migration, and bone regeneration. Piezoelectric materials can generate electricity under mechanical stress without requiring an external power supply; therefore, using it as a bone implant capable of harnessing the body's kinetic energy to generate the electrical signals needed for bone growth is very promising for bone regeneration. At the same time, devices composed of piezoelectric material using electromechanical conversion technology can effectively monitor the structural health of bone, which facilitates the adjustment of the treatment plan at any time. This review mainly focuses on the surface functionalization approaches of titanium dioxide (TiO2) to prevent bacterial infections and facilitate osteointegration simultaneously for titanium (Ti)-based orthopedic implants. Infection is one of the major causes of implant failure. Meanwhile, it is also critical for the bone-forming cells to integrate with the implant surface. TiO2 is the native oxide layer of Ti which has good biocompatibility as well as enriched physical, chemical, electronic, and photocatalytic properties. The formed nanostructures during fabrication and the enriched properties of TiO2 have enabled various functionalization methods to combat the micro-organisms and enhance the osteogenesis of Ti implants. This review encompasses the various modifications of TiO2 in aspects of topology, drug loading, and element incorporation, as well as the most recently developed electron transfer and electrical tuning approaches. Orchardgrass (Dactylis glomerata L.) is a species in the Gramineae family that is highly important economically and valued for its role in ecology. However, the phylogeny and taxonomy of D. glomerata are still controversial based on current morphological and molecular evidence. The study of chloroplast (cp) genomes has developed into a powerful tool to develop molecular markers for related species and reveal the relationships between plant evolution and phylogenetics. In this study, we conducted comparative genomic analyses and phylogenetic inferences on 14 cp genomes of D. glomerata originating from the Mediterranean and Eurasia. The genome size ranged from 134,375 bp to 134,993 bp and exhibited synteny of gene organization and order. A total of 129–131 genes were identified, including 85–87 protein coding genes, 38 tRNA genes and 8 rRNA genes. The cp sequences were highly conserved, and key sequence variations were detected at the junctions of inverted repeats (IRs)/small single–copy (SSC) regions. Moreover, nine highly variable regions were identified among the subspecies based on a sequence divergence analysis. A total of 285 RNA editing sites were detected that were relevant to 52 genes, where rpoB exhibited the most abundant RNA editing sites. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that all Dactylis subspecies clustered into a monophyletic group and most branches provided a high support bootstrap. The main divergence time of D. glomerata was dated to the Miocene era, and this could have been due to changes in the climate. These findings will provide useful insights for further studies on phylogeny, the identification of subspecies and the development of hypotheses for the evolutionary history of the genus Dactylis and of the Gramineae family. Aristolochic acid nephropathy (AAN) is a progressive kidney disease caused by a Chinese herb containing aristolochic acid. Excessive death of renal tubular epithelial cells (RTECs) characterized the acute phase of AAN. Therapies for acute AAN were limited, such as steroids and angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs)/angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEIs). It was interesting that, in acute AAN, female patients showed relative slower progression to renal failure than males. In a previous study, female hormone 17β -estradiol (E2) was found to attenuate renal ischemia-reperfusion injury. Thus, the aim of this study was to investigate the potential protective role of E2 in acute AAN. Compared with male C57BL/6 mice of acute AAN, lower serum creatinine (SCr) and less renal injury, together with RTEC apoptosis in females, were found. Treatment with E2 in male AAN mice reduced SCr levels and attenuated renal tubular injury and RTEC apoptosis. In the mice kidney tissue and human renal proximal tubule cells (HK-2 cells), E2 both attenuated AA-induced cell apoptosis and downregulated the expression of phosphor-p53 (Ser15), p53, and cleaved-caspase-3. This study highlights that E2 exhibited protective effects on the renal injury of acute AAN in male mice by reducing RTEC apoptosis, which might be related to inhibiting the p53 signaling pathway. Background: HIV p24 is an extracellular HIV antigen involved in viral replication. Falling p24 antibody responses are associated with clinical disease progression and their preservation with non-progressive disease. Stimulation of p24 antibody production by immunization to delay progression was the basis of discontinued p24 vaccine. We studied a therapy-naive HIV+ man from Sydney, Australia, infected in 1988. He received the HIV-p24-virus like particle (VLP) vaccine in 1993, and continues to show vigorous p24 antigen responses (>4% p24-specific CD4+ T cells), coupled with undetectable plasma viremia. We defined immune-protective correlates of p24 vaccination at the proteomic level through parallel retrospective analysis of cellular immune responses to p24 antigen in CD4+ and CD8+ T cells and CD14+ monocytes at viremic and aviremic phases using antibody-array. We found statistically significant coordinated up-regulation by all three cell-types with high fold-changes in fractalkine, ITAC, IGFBP-2, and MIP-1α in the aviremic phase. TECK and TRAIL-R4 were down-regulated in the viremic phase and up-regulated in the aviremic phase. The up-regulation of fractalkine in all three cell-types coincided with protective effect, whereas the dysfunction in anti-apoptotic chemokines with the loss of immune function. This study highlights the fact that induction of HIV-1-specific helper cells together with coordinated cellular immune response (p < 0.001) might be important in immunotherapeutic interventions and HIV vaccine development. This study aimed to assess the acute toxicity and safety of flavonoid-rich extract from Maydis stigma (FMS) in mice. The in vitro antioxidant activity of FMS was determined by 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) and 2,2'-azinobis-(3-ethyl-benzthiazoline-6-sulphonate) (ABTS) scavenging assays. Furthermore, the in vivo antioxidant of FMS against ethanol-induced oxidative damage in mice was determined by analysis of the serum total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD) activity, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, liver tissue glutathione (GSH) content, and protein carbonyl (PC) content in liver tissue. The oral administration of FMS at doses of 30 g/kg did not cause death in mice, and there were no significant biologically adverse effects in mice. These results indicated that the median lethal dose (LD50) is higher than this dose. The IC50 values of FMS for the DPPH and ABTS scavenging activity were 50.73 and 0.23 mg/mL, respectively. Meanwhile, FMS could significantly enhance T-SOD activity, reduce MDA content in the serum, increase GSH content, and decrease PC content in the liver tissue at the tested doses (25, 50, 100, 200 mg/kg· day). Compared with currently prevailing Li-ion technologies, sodium-ion energy storage devices play a supremely important role in grid-scale storage due to the advantages of rich abundance and low cost of sodium resources. As one of the crucial components of the sodium-ion battery and sodium-ion capacitor, electrode materials based on biomass-derived carbons have attracted enormous attention in the past few years owing to their excellent performance, inherent structural advantages, cost-effectiveness, renewability, etc. Here, a systematic summary of recent progress on various biomass-derived carbons used for sodium-ion energy storage (e.g., sodium-ion storage principle, the classification of bio-microstructure) is presented. Current research on the design principles of the structure and composition of biomass-derived carbons for improving sodium-ion storage will be highlighted. Soil salination is likely to reduce crop production worldwide. Annual ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum L.) is one of the most important forages cultivated in temperate and subtropical regions. We performed a time-course comparative transcriptome for salinity-sensitive (SS) and salinity-insensitive (SI) genotypes of the annual ryegrass at six intervals post-stress to describe the transcriptional changes and identify the core genes involved in the early responses to salt stress. Our study generated 215.18 Gb of clean data and identified 7642 DEGs in six pairwise comparisons between the SS and SI genotypes of annual ryegrass. Function enrichment of the DEGs indicated that the differences in lipid, vitamins, and carbohydrate metabolism are responsible for variation in salt tolerance of the SS and SI genotypes. Stage-specific profiles revealed novel regulation mechanisms in salinity stress sensing, phytohormones signaling transduction, and transcriptional regulation of the early salinity responses. High-affinity K+ (HAKs) and high-affinity K1 transporter (HKT1) play different roles in the ionic homeostasis of the two genotypes. Moreover, our results also revealed that transcription factors (TFs), such as WRKYs, ERFs, and MYBs, may have different functions during the early signaling sensing of salt stress, such as WRKYs, ERFs, and MYBs. The unique 75 K -secalins encoded by Sec2 loci in Secale species is composed of almost half rye storage proteins. The chromosomal location of Sec2 loci in wild Secale species, Secale africanum, was carried out by the wheat--S. africanum derivatives, which were identified by genomic in situ hybridization and multi-color fluorescence in situ hybridization. The Sec2 gene-specific PCR analysis indicated that the S. cereale Sec2 was located on chromosome 2R, while the S. africanum Sec2 was localized on chromosome 6Rafr of S. africanum. A total of 38 Sec2 gene sequences were isolated from S. africanum, S. cereale and S. sylvestre by PCR-based cloning. Phylogenetic analysis showed that S. africanum Sec2 diverged from S. cereale Sec2 approximately 2-3 million years ago. The illegitimate recombination of chromosome 2R-6R involving the Sec2 loci region may accelerate sequence variation during evolutionary process from wild to cultivated Secale species. In order to address the problem of sulfur gas and other odors released in the process of using sewage sludge as a construction material, this study prepared multiscale composite particles with a "large scale-medium scale-small scale-micro scale" structure by mixing sludge with silica-alumina building materials. Analysis of the structural changes formed by the internal gas of composite particles due to diffusion at different temperatures and a study of the characteristics of SO2 and H2S release from composite particles were conducted, as well as being compared with the release characteristics of pure sludge, which clarified the mechanism of controlling sulfur-containing-gas release from composite particles. The results showed that compared with pure sludge, the sludge-clay multiscale composite particles were able to reduce the release of SO2 and H2S up to 90% and 91%, and the release temperatures of SO2 and H2S were increased to 120 °C and 80 °C, respectively. Meanwhile, the special structure of the sludge-clay multiscale composite particles and the clay composition are the main factors that hinder the diffusion of sludge pyrolysis gases. Additionally, there are three layers of "gray surface layer-black mixed layer-dark gray spherical core" formed inside the composite particles, which is the apparent manifestation of the diffusion of volatile gases. Activation and enhancement of heat shock factor (HSF) pathways are important adaptive responses to heat stress in plants. The γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) plays an important role in regulating heat tolerance, but it is unclear whether GABA-induced thermotolerance is associated with activation of HSF pathways in plants. In this study, the changes of endogenous GABA level affecting physiological responses and genes involved in HSF pathways were investigated in creeping bentgrass during heat stress. The increase in endogenous GABA content induced by exogenous application of GABA effectively alleviated heat damage, as reflected by higher leaf relative water content, cell membrane stability, photosynthesis, and lower oxidative damage. Contrarily, the inhibition of GABA accumulation by the application of GABA biosynthesis inhibitor further aggravated heat damage. Transcriptional analyses showed that exogenous GABA could significantly upregulate transcript levels of genes encoding heat shock factor HSFs (HSFA-6a, HSFA-2c, and HSFB-2b), heat shock proteins (HSP17.8, HSP26.7, HSP70, and HSP90.1-b1), and ascorbate peroxidase 3 (APX3), whereas the inhibition of GABA biosynthesis depressed these genes expression under heat stress. Treatment of septic acute kidney injury (AKI) has still been beyond satisfaction, although anti-inflammatory therapy is beneficial for sepsis-induced AKI. Compound 5b was derived from natural pyranochalcones and exhibited potent anti-inflammatory activity in adjuvant-induced arthritis. In this study, we aimed to investigate the renoprotective effects and potential mechanism of 5b against lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced AKI. C57BL/6 mice and human renal proximal tubule cell line (HK-2 cell) were treated with LPS, respectively. Compound 5b was orally administrated at a dose of 25 mg/kg/day for 5 days before LPS (10 mg/kg) intraperitoneal injection. Cells were pretreated with 25 µg/mL 5b for 30 min before LPS (1 µg/mL) treatment. Pretreatment with 5b markedly alleviated tubular injury and renal dysfunction in LPS-induced AKI. The expression of IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α both in renal tissue of AKI mice and in the LPS-stimulated HK-2 cell culture medium were reduced by 5b treatment (p < 0.05). The results of immunohistochemistry staining showed that 5b reduced the expression of NF-κB p65 in kidneys. Similarly, 5b decreased the LPS-induced levels of NF-κB p65 and TLR4 proteins in kidneys and HK-2 cells. These data demonstrated that a potent pyranochalcone derivative, 5b, exhibited renoprotective effect against LPS-induced AKI, which was associated with anti-inflammatory activity by inhibiting the TLR4/NF-κB pathway. In order to utilize the distributed characteristic of sensors, distributed machine learning has become the mainstream approach, but the different computing capability of sensors and network delays greatly influence the accuracy and the convergence rate of the machine learning model. Our paper describes a reasonable parameter communication optimization strategy to balance the training overhead and the communication overhead. We extend the fault tolerance of iterative-convergent machine learning algorithms and propose the Dynamic Finite Fault Tolerance (DFFT). Based on the DFFT, we implement a parameter communication optimization strategy for distributed machine learning, named Dynamic Synchronous Parallel Strategy (DSP), which uses the performance monitoring model to dynamically adjust the parameter synchronization strategy between worker nodes and the Parameter Server (PS). This strategy makes full use of the computing power of each sensor, ensures the accuracy of the machine learning model, and avoids the situation that the model training is disturbed by any tasks unrelated to the sensors. Compound K is one of the active metabolites of Panaxnotoginseng saponins, which could attenuate the formation of atherosclerosis in mice modelsvia activating LXRα. We synthesized and evaluated a series of ginsenoside compound K derivatives modified with short chain fatty acids. All of the structures of this class of ginsenoside compound K derivative exhibited comparable or better biological activity than ginsenoside compound K. Multiple nanos genes have been characterized in several fishes, but the functional implications of their various expression patterns remain unclear. In this study, we identified and characterized four nanos genes from a hermaphroditic fish orange-spotted grouper, Epinephelus coioides. Ecnanos1a and Ecnanos1b show divergent expression patterns, and the dynamic expression change of Ecnanos1a in pituitaries during sex change is associated with testis differentiation and spermatogenesis. Ecnanos2 and Ecnanos3 might be germline stem cells (GSCs) and primordial germ cells (PGCs)-specific markers, respectively. Significantly, Ecnanos3 3′-untranslated region (UTR) is necessary for PGC specific expression, where a non-canonical “GCACGTTT” sequence is required for miR-430-mediated repression of Ecnanos3 RNA. Furthermore, grouper Dead end (Dnd) can relieve miR-430 repression in PGCs by associating with a 23 bp U-rich region (URR) in Ecnanos3 3′-UTR. The current study revealed the functional association of multiple nanos genes with PGC formation and germ cell development in orange-spotted grouper, and opened up new possibilities for developing biotechnologies through utilizing the associations between Ecnanos3 and PGCs or between Ecnanos2 and GSCs in the hermaphroditic fish. As a type of renewable energy, wind energy is integrated into the power system with more and more penetration levels. It is challenging for the power system operators (PSOs) to cope with the uncertainty and variation of the wind power and its forecasts. A chance-constrained economic dispatch (ED) model for the wind-thermal-energy storage system (WTESS) is developed in this paper. An optimization model with the wind power and the energy storage system (ESS) is first established with the consideration of both the economic benefits of the system and less wind curtailments. The original wind power generation is processed by the ESS to obtain the final wind power output generation (FWPG). A Gaussian mixture model (GMM) distribution is adopted to characterize the probabilistic and cumulative distribution functions with an analytical expression. Then, a chance-constrained ED model integrated by the wind-energy storage system (W-ESS) is developed by considering both the overestimation costs and the underestimation costs of the system and solved by the sequential linear programming method. Numerical simulation results using the wind power data in four wind farms are performed on the developed ED model with the IEEE 30-bus system. It is verified that the developed ED model is effective to integrate the uncertain and variable wind power. Apobec-1 complementation factor (A1CF) is a member of the heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoproteins (hnRNP) family, which participates in site-specific posttranscriptional RNA editing of apolipoprotein B (apoB) transcript. The posttranscriptional editing of apoB mRNA by A1CF in the small intestine is required for lipid absorption. Apart from the intestine, A1CF mRNA is also reported to be highly expressed in the kidneys. However, it is remained unknown about the functions of A1CF in the kidneys. The aim of this paper is to explore the potential functions of A1CF in the kidneys. Our results demonstrated that in C57BL/6 mice A1CF was weakly expressed in embryonic kidneys from E15.5dpc while strongly expressed in mature kidneys after birth, and it mainly existed in the tubules of inner cortex. More importantly, we identified A1CF negatively regulated the process of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in kidney tubular epithelial cells. Our results found ectopic expression of A1CF up-regulated the epithelial markers E-cadherin, and down-regulated the mesenchymal markers vimentin and α-smooth muscle actin (α-SMA) in NRK52e cells. In addition, knockdown of A1CF enhanced EMT contrary to the overexpression effect. Notably, the two A1CF variants led to the similar trend in the EMT process. Renal fibrosis is the final common pathway of chronic kidney disease (CKD), and no effective medication is available clinically for managing its progression. Metformin was initially developed as an anti-diabetic drug and recently gained attention for its potential in the treatment of other diseases. In this study, we investigated its effects on renal fibrosis in a mouse model of unilateral ureteral obstruction (UUO) in vivo and in angiotensin II (Ang II)–treated renal fibroblast NRK-49F cells in vitro. Our data showed that UUO induced renal fibrosis and combined with the activation of ERK signaling, the upregulation of fibronectin, collagen I, and transforming growth factor-β (TGF-β). The administration of metformin inhibited the activation of ERK signaling and attenuated the production of extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins and collagen deposition in the obstructed kidneys. In cultured renal fibroblasts, Ang II increased the expression of fibronectin and collagen I and also activated ERK signaling and TGF-β in a time-dependent manner. Pretreatment of the cells with metformin blocked Ang II–induced ERK signaling activation and ECM overproduction. Our results show that metformin prevents renal fibrosis, possibly through the inhibition of ERK signaling, and may be a novel strategy for the treatment of renal fibrosis. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Accumulating evidence demonstrated that miRNAs are highly involved in kidney fibrosis and Epithelial-Eesenchymal Transition (EMT), however, the mechanisms of miRNAs in kidney fibrosis are poorly understood. In this work, we identified that miR542-3p could promote EMT through down-regulating bone morphogenetic protein 7 (BMP7) expression by targeting BMP7 31UTR. Firstly, real-time PCR results showed that miR542-3p was significantly up-regulated in kidney fibrosis in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, Western blot results demonstrated that miR542-3p may promote EMT in the NRK52e cell line. In addition, we confirmed that BMP7, which played a crucial role in anti-kidney fibrosis and suppressed the progression of EMT, was a target of miR542-3p through Dual-Luciferase reporter assay, as did Western blot analysis. The effects of miR542-3p on regulating EMT could also be suppressed by transiently overexpressing BMP7 in NRK52e cells.
