The Matsu Islands Tern Refuge comprises eight reefs located at a relay station on the East Asian bird migration route, and it attracts many transiting, wintering, or breeding birds to inhabit and live on the reefs every year. In order to understand the compositions of plant communities as a breeding habitat for seabirds, we investigated the plant communities of the eight reefs. A total of 130 plots of 10 × 10 square meters were established, from which we found 107 species of plants in 102 genera and 51 families. Among this, we found one critically endangered (CR) species, four vulnerable (VU) species, and three near-threatened (NT) species. The result of two-way indicator species analysis (TWINSPAN) and indicator value (IndVal) showed 130 samples were divided into 11 vegetation types; most of the vegetation types had significant indicator species. We also use the two-way to present the plot of detrended correspondence analysis (DCA) by vegetation types and reefs. Moreover, this result reveals that these samples were more clearly cluster divided by islands. Our results reveal that the compositions and characteristics of plant communities were related clearly to the environmental factors for each reef in the Matsu Islands Tern Refuge. Canonical correspondence analysis (CCA) indicated that species composition of vegetation yielded high correlation with soil property, especially with soil pH. In addition, we found that the traces of bird activity is relevant to the characteristics and structures of plant communities. We found that the plant communities comprising low-grass shrubs would provide relatively soft nesting materials and sheltering effects for eggs or hatchlings for terns. Compared to low-grass shrubs, the traits of high-grass shrubs would not be beneficial to nest for breeding of terns on the ground, and no nested trace was found in these plant communities. In this study, we utilized a mixture random effects model and pairwise comparisons to conduct our analysis. Furthermore, we employed visualization techniques, specifically line plots in Python, to illustrate the tonal variations in disyllabic words among Polish learners of Mandarin. Our findings indicate that Polish learners experience more difficulty with the tonal contours of Tone 1 (T1) and Tone 2 (T2) compared to Taiwanese Mandarin (TM) natives, particularly due to the lower pitch range required. We provide potential pedagogical recommendations based on these results. We suggest that integrating training on T1 and T2 accompanied with Tone 3 (T3) and Tone 4 (T4), because of their lower endpoint tones, may offer a more effective learning strategy for these learners. Previous studies showed that NaIO3 can induce oxidative stress-mediated retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) damage to simulate age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Lemon peel is rich in antioxidants and components that can penetrate the blood–retinal barrier, but their role in retinal oxidative damage remains unexplored. Here, we explore the protection of lemon peel ultrasonic-assisted water extract (LUWE), containing large amounts of flavonoids and polyphenols, against NaIO3-induced retinal degeneration. We initially demonstrated that LUWE, orally administered, prevented retinal distortion and thinning on the inner and outer nuclei layers, downregulating cleaved caspase-3 protein expression in RPE cells in NaIO3-induced mice. The effect of LUWE was achieved through the suppression of apoptosis and the associated proteins, such as cleaved PARP and cleaved caspase-3, as suggested by NaIO3-induced ARPE-19 cell models. This is because LUWE reduced reactive oxygen species-mediated mitochondrial fission via regulating p-Drp-1 and Fis1 expression. We further confirmed that LUWE suppresses the expression of p-MEK-1/2 and p-ERK-1/2 in NaIO3-induced ARPE-19 cells, thereby providing the protection described above, which was confirmed using PD98059 and U0126. These results indicated that LUWE prevents mitochondrial oxidative stress-mediated RPE damage via the MEK/ERK pathway. The cost-effectiveness and high efficiency of atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) incentivise researchers to explore its potentials within the food industry. Presently, the destructive nature of this nonthermal technology can be utilised to inactivate foodborne pathogens, enzymatic ripening, food allergens, and pesticides. However, by adjusting its parameters, ACP can also be employed in other novel applications including food modification, drying pre-treatment, nutrient extraction, active packaging, and food waste processing. Relevant studies were conducted to investigate the impacts of ACP and posit that reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) play the principal roles in achieving the set objectives. In this review article, operations of ACP to achieve desired results are discussed. Ganoderma formosanum is a medicinal mushroom endemic to Taiwan. The extraction of G. formosanum mycelium using ethyl acetate showed a significant reduction of melanin activity due to the inhibition of tyrosinase. To optimize the production of G. formosanum mycelium with anti-melanogenic activity, different variables (carbon sources and concentrations, initial pH value, and temperature) were investigated. According to the results, the optimal conditions included the utilization of 50 g/L lactose as the carbon source at pH 7 and 25 °C for 9 days. Afterward, the G. formosanum ethanolic extracts-optimized (GFE-O) was used to study the anti-melanogenic activity in vitro and in vivo. In B16-F10 melanoma cells treated with GFE-O (0.1 mg/mL), the intracellular melanin content was reduced to 76% compared to the control group. By applying GFE-O (0.05 mg/mL) in vivo on zebrafish embryo, hypopigmentation was observed, and the melanin content was reduced to 62% compared to the control with no toxicological effects. The results showed that the optimal inoculation conditions can provide the basis for future large-scale production of G. formosanum mycelium to maximize the extraction of anti-melanogenic ingredients. Myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury is marked by rapid increase in inflammation and not only results in myocardial apoptosis but also compromises the myocardial function. Dunaliella salina (D. salina), a halophilic unicellular microalga, has been used as a provitamin A carotenoid supplement and color additive. Several studies have reported that D. salina extract could attenuate lipopolysaccharides-induced inflammatory effects and regulate the virus-induced inflammatory response in macrophages. However, the effects of D. salina on myocardial I/R injury remain unknown. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the cardioprotection of D. salina extract in rats subjected to myocardial I/R injury that was induced by occlusion of the left anterior descending coronary artery for 1 h followed by 3 h of reperfusion. Compared with the vehicle group, the myocardial infarct size significantly decreased in rats that were pre-treated with D. salina. D. salina significantly attenuated the expressions of TLR4, COX-2 and the activity of STAT1, JAK2, IκB, NF-κB. Furthermore, D. salina significantly inhibited the activation of caspase-3 and the levels of Beclin-1, p62, LC3-I/II. This study is the first to report that the cardioprotective effects of D. salina may mediate anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic activities and decrease autophagy through the TLR4-mediated signaling pathway to antagonize myocardial I/R injury. Axial spondyloarthritis (axSpA) is a chronic inflammatory rheumatic disease that mainly affects the axial bones, and dementia is characterized by a decline in cognitive function, leading to dependence in everyday activity. Although the association between dementia and ankylosing spondylitis has been investigated, the influence of axSpA medication on dementia risk is unclear. The aim of this study was to investigate the risk of dementia among axSpA patients and if the conventional synthetic disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (csDMARDs) can reduce the risk of dementia. Patients with axSpA whose data were recorded during 2004–2008 and who were followed up until the end of 2010 were recruited. A control cohort was matched by age and sex. A Cox multivariate proportional hazards model was applied to analyze the risk factors for dementia. The hazard ratio (HR) and adjusted HR (aHR) were estimated between the study and control cohorts. The effects of csDMARDs and steroid use on the risk of different types of dementia were also analyzed. In total, 2341 and 11,705 patients constituted the axSpA and control cohort, respectively. The axSpA cohort had a greater risk of vascular dementia (aHR = 2.09 (1.36–3.20). The risk of dementia (aHR = 1.01 (0.55–1.85) did not significantly differ between patients with axSpA who received csDMARDs. Siraitia grosvenorii is a type of fruit used in traditional Chinese medicine. Previous studies have shown that the conversion of saponins was often carried out by chemical hydrolysis, which can be problematic because of the environmental hazards it may cause and the low yield it produces. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish a continuous bioreactor with immobilized enzymes to produce siamenoside I and mogroside IV. The results show that the immobilization process of β-glucosidase exhibited the best relative activity with a glutaraldehyde (GA) concentration of 1.5%, carrier activation time of 1 h and binding enzyme time of 12 h. After the immobilization through GA linkage, the highest relative activity of β-glucosidase was recorded through the reaction with the substrate at 60 °C and pH 5. Subsequently, the glass microspheres with immobilized β-glucosidase were filled into the reactor to maintain the optimal active environment, and the aqueous solution of Siraitia grosvenorii extract was introduced by controlling the flow rate. The highest concentration of siamenoside I and mogroside IV were obtained at a flow rate of 0.3 and 0.2 mL/min, respectively. Encephalitis is a rare brain inflammation that is most commonly caused by a viral infection. In this study, we first use an in vivo imaging system (IVIS) to determine whether NF-κBp-luciferase expression could be detected in the brain of pseudorabies virus (PRV)-infected NF-κBp-luciferase mice and to evaluate proinflammatory mediators in a well-described mouse model of PRV encephalitis. In in vitro studies, we used murine microglia (BV-2) cells to demonstrate the PRV-induced encephalitis model entailing the activation of microglia cells. The results indicate that PRV-induced neuroinflammation responses through the induction of IL-6, TNF-α, COX-2, and iNOS expression occurred via the regulation of NF-κB expression in BV-2 cells. In in vivo studies, compared with MOCK controls, the mice infected with neurovirulent PRV exhibited significantly elevated NF-κB transcription factor activity and luciferase protein expression only in the brain by IVIS. Mild focal necrosis was also observed in the brain. Further examination revealed biomarkers of inflammation, including inducible cyclooxygenase (COX)-2, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), and tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α and interleukin (IL)-6, both of which constituted proinflammatory cytokines. PRV infection stimulated inflammation and COX-2 and iNOS expression of IL-6 and TNF-α. The presented results herein suggest that PRV induces iNOS and COX-2 expression in the brain of NF-κBp–luciferase mice via NF-κB activation. In conclusion, we used NF-κBp-luciferase mice to establish a specific virus-induced encephalitis model via PRV intranasal infection. In the future, this in vivo model will provide potential targets for the development of new therapeutic strategies focusing on NF-κB inflammatory biomarkers and the development of drugs for viral inflammatory diseases. Coculturing non-Saccharomyces yeasts with Saccharomyces cerevisiae could enrich the aromatic complexity of alcoholic beverages during cider brewing. Therefore, the present study performed rapid strain screening via selective culture medium and aroma analysis and adopted a response surface methodology to optimize fermentation conditions to produce 2-phenylethyl acetate (PEA), which presents a rose and honey scent. The effects of coculturing yeasts on cider quality were evaluated through hedonic sensory analysis and the check-all-that-apply (CATA) method. Hanseniaspora vineae P5 and S. cerevisiae P1 produced ciders with high levels of PEA and 2-phenylethanol, respectively. The optimal fermentation process consisted of sequential inoculation with a 31 h delay between inoculations, followed by fermentation for 14.5 d at 18.7 °C, yielding 17.41 ± 0.51 mg/L of PEA, which was 4.6-fold higher than that obtained through the unoptimized fermentation process. Additionally, the CATA results revealed that the cider produced through coculturing was associated with descriptors such as "smooth taste", "honey", "pineapple", and "fruity", which can be attributed to the high ethyl acetate and PEA levels in the cider. Featured Application: According to our results, AuNPs with thermal stability and antioxidant property prepared through biogenic approaches have potential use in food preservation. We have developed a "green" method for fabricating gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) through biogenic approaches. The proposed method has the advantages of facile preparation under ecofriendly conditions. AuNPs encapsulated in carbon nanosheets, and exhibiting high thermal stability, were fabricated by autoclaving pectin-capped AuNPs, which were subsequently collected through high-speed centrifugation and redispersed in aqueous solution. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazy (DPPH) radical scavenging assay indicated that our prepared AuNPs exhibited more prolonged antioxidant capacity than pristine apple extracts. Electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra showed that approximately 80% of DPPH radicals were scavenged by the pectin-capped AuNPs at a concentration of 3 mg/mL. It is well known that age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disease that can cause blindness in the elderly. Oxidative stress-induced retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cell damage is a part of the pathogenesis of AMD. In this study, we evaluated the protective effect and mechanisms of alpha-mangostin (α-mangostin, α-MG) against NaIO3-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS)-dependent toxicity, which activates apoptosis in vivo and in vitro. MTT assay and flow cytometry demonstrated that the pretreatment of ARPE-19 cells with α-MG (0, 3.75, 7.5, and 15 μM) significantly increased cell viability and reduced apoptosis from NaIO3-induced oxidative stress in a concentration-dependent manner, which was achieved by the inhibition of Bax, cleaved PARP-1, cleaved caspase-3 protein expression, and enhancement of Bcl-2 protein. Furthermore, pre-incubation of ARPE-19 cells with α-MG markedly inhibited the intracellular ROS and extracellular H2O2 generation via blocking of the abnormal enzyme activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), the downregulated levels of catalase (CAT), and the endogenous antioxidant, glutathione (GSH), which were regulated by decreasing PI3K-AKT-PGC-1α-STRT-3 signaling in ARPE-19 cells. In addition, our in vivo results indicated that α-MG improved retinal deformation and increased the thickness of both the outer nuclear layer and inner nuclear layer by inhibiting the expression of cleaved caspase-3 protein. Ganoderma formosanum (GF) is a medicinal mushroom endemic to Taiwan. Previous research established the optimal culture conditions to produce exopolysaccharide rich in β-glucan (GF-EPS) from submerged fermentation of GF. The present study investigated the antitumor effects of GF-EPS in a Lewis lung carcinoma cell (LLC1) tumor-bearing mice model. In the preventive model, GF-EPS was orally administered to mice before LLC1 injection. In the therapeutic model, GF-EPS oral administration was initiated five days after tumor cell injection. The tumor size and body weight of the mice were recorded. After sacrifice, the lymphocyte subpopulation was analyzed using flow cytometry. Spleen tissues were used to analyze cytokine mRNA expression. The results showed that GF-EPS (80 mg/kg) effectively suppressed LLC1 tumor growth in both the preventive and therapeutic models. GF-EPS administration increased the proportion of natural killer cells in the spleen and activated gene expression of several cytokines. Oxidative damage of retinal pigment epithelium (RPE) cells plays an important role in the pathogenesis of blindness-related diseases, such as age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Quercetin, a bioactive flavonoid compound, has been shown to have a protective effect against oxidative stress-induced cell apoptosis and inflammation in RPE cells; however, the detailed mechanism underlying this protective effect is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the regulatory mechanism of quercetin in a sodium iodate (NaIO3)-induced retinal damage. The clinical features of the mice, the production of oxidative stress, and the activity of autophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis were examined. In the mouse model, NaIO3 treatment caused changes in the retinal structure and reduced pupil constriction, and quercetin treatment reversed the oxidative stress-related pathology by decreasing the level of superoxide dismutase 2 (SOD2) while enhancing the serum levels of catalase and glutathione. The increased level of reactive oxygen species in the NaIO3-treated ARPE19 cells was improved by treatment with quercetin, accompanied by a reduction in autophagy and mitochondrial biogenesis. Our findings indicated that the effects of quercetin on regulating the generation of mtROS were dependent on increased levels of deacetyl-SOD2 through the Nrf2-PGC-1α-Sirt1 signaling pathway. Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) leads to gradual central vision loss and is the third leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. The underlying mechanisms for this progressive neurodegenerative disease remain unclear and there is currently no preventive treatment for dry AMD. Sodium iodate (NaIO3) has been reported to induce AMD-like retinal pathology in mice. We established a mouse model for AMD to evaluate the effects of quercetin on NaIO3-induced retinal apoptosis, and to investigate the pertinent underlying mechanisms. Our in vitro results indicated that quercetin protected human retinal pigment epithelium (ARPE-19) cells from NaIO3-induced apoptosis by inhibiting reactive oxygen species production and loss of mitochondrial membrane potential as detected by Annexin V-FITC/PI flow cytometry. We also evaluated the relative expression of proteins in the apoptosis pathway. Quercetin downregulated the protein expressions of Bax, cleaved caspase-3, and cleaved PARP and upregulated the expression of Bcl-2 through reduced PI3K and pAKT expressions. Furthermore, our in vivo results indicated that quercetin improved retinal deformation and increased the thickness of both the outer nuclear layer and inner nuclear layer, whereas the expression of caspase-3 was inhibited. Taken together, these results demonstrate that quercetin could protect retinal pigment epithelium and the retina from NaIO3-induced cell apoptosis via reactive oxygen species-mediated mitochondrial dysfunction, involving the PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. Urethane dimethacrylate (UDMA) is a dimethacrylate-based resin monomer that can react with other related monomers and inorganic particles, causing hydrophobic polymerization through cross-linking upon light activation. UDMA polymers are commonly used for the reconstruction and reinforcement of teeth and bones. UDMA can become unbound and be released from light-cured polymer resins. Thus far, no evidence exists on the toxic effects of UDMA and its related working mechanisms for macrophages. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the cytotoxicity, mode of cell death, DNA damage, caspase activities, mitochondrial dysfunction, and reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation in RAW264.7 macrophages treated with UDMA using the lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) assay kit, Annexin V-FITC and PI assays, micronucleus formation and comet assay, caspase fluorometric assay, JC-1 assay, and 2ʹ,7ʹ-dichlorofluorescin diacetate (DCFH-DA) assay, respectively. Our results show that UDMA induced cytotoxicity; apoptosis and necrosis; genotoxicity, which is also called DNA damage; increased caspase-3, -8, and -9 activities; mitochondrial dysfunction; and intracellular ROS generation in a concentration-dependent manner in RAW264.7 macrophages. Thus, based on the observed inhibited concentration parallel trends, we concluded that UDMA induces toxic effects in macrophages. Background: P2Y12 inhibitor monotherapy is an alternative antiplatelet strategy in patients undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). However, the ideal P2Y12 inhibitor for monotherapy is unclear. Methods and Results: We performed a multicenter, retrospective, observational study to compare the efficacy and safety of monotherapy with clopidogrel versus ticagrelor in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) undergoing PCI. From 1 January 2014 to 31 December 2018, 610 patients with ACS who received P2Y12 monotherapy with either clopidogrel (n = 369) or ticagrelor (n = 241) after aspirin was discontinued prematurely were included. Inverse probability of treatment weighting was used to balance covariates between the groups. The primary endpoint was the composite of all-cause mortality, recurrent ACS or unplanned revascularization, and stroke within 12 months after discharge. Overall, 84 patients reached the primary endpoint, with 57 (15.5%) in the clopidogrel group and 27 (11.2%) in the ticagrelor group. Multivariate adjustment in Cox proportional-hazards models revealed a lower risk of the primary endpoint with ticagrelor than with clopidogrel (adjusted hazard ratio (aHR): 0.67, 95% confidence interval (CI): 0.49–0.93). Ticagrelor significantly reduced the risk of recurrent ACS or unplanned revascularization (aHR: 0.46, 95% CI: 0.28–0.75). No significant difference in all-cause mortality and major bleeding events was observed between the 2 groups. Conclusions: Among patients with ACS undergoing PCI who cannot complete course of dual antiplatelet therapy, a significantly lower risk of cardiovascular events was associated with ticagrelor monotherapy than with clopidogrel monotherapy. Patients with axial spondyloarthritis (ax-SpA) present with inflammation invading the axial skeleton. Symptoms of ax-SpA interfere with patients' quality of life, and peripheral symptoms are also noted. Human leukocyte antigen B27 was associated with adhesive capsulitis. However, epidemiological studies investigating the associated incidence and risk factors for patients with ax-SpA with adhesive capsulitis are limited. The data of patients with ax-SpA were recorded during the 2004–2008 period and followed to the end of 2010. The control cohort comprised age- and sex-matched non-ax-SpA subjects. A Cox multivariate proportional hazards model was applied to analyze the risk factors for adhesive capsulitis. The hazard ratio (HR) and adjusted hazard ratio (aHR) were estimated between the study and control cohorts after confounders were adjusted for. Effects of sulfasalazine (SSZ), methotrexate (MTX), and hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) use on adhesive capsulitis risk were also analyzed. We enrolled 2859 patients with ax-SpA in the study cohort and 11,436 control subjects. A higher incidence of adhesive capsulitis was revealed in the ax-SpA cohort: The crude HR was 1.63 (95% CI, 1.24–2.13; p < 0.001), and the aHR was 1.54 (95% CI, 1.16–2.05; p = 0.002). For patients with ax-SpA using SSZ or HCQ, no difference in aHR was noted compared with control participants, but patients with ax-SpA treated with MTX had higher HR and aHR than controls. Patients with ax-SpA are at risk for adhesive capsulitis. When these patients receive SSZ or HCQ, the risk of adhesive capsulitis can be lowered compared with that of the control cohort. Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) commonly causes inflammation in the joints and periarticular structures. The association between RA and rotator cuff (RC) has been reported; however, epidemiological studies on RA and RC tendons are scant. Therefore, we investigated RC disease (RCD) risk and analyzed the effects of RA medication, steroids, and methotrexate, on the risk of RCD for patients with RA. We conducted a retrospective cohort study with a 6-year longitudinal follow-up in Taiwan. Patients who received RA diagnoses between 2004 and 2008 were enrolled in the study cohort. The non-RA control cohort comprised age- and sex-matched controls. Propensity score matching was used for other comorbidities and treatments. The hazard ratios (HRs) and adjusted HRs (aHRs) were estimated after confounders were adjusted for. Effects of steroid and methotrexate use on RCD risk were also analyzed. We enrolled 4521 RA patients (study cohort) and 22,605 matched controls. RCD incidence was 145 and 91 per 100,000 person-years in the RA and control cohorts, respectively. In the RA cohort, the crude HR for RCD was 1.62 (95% confidence interval (CI), 1.41–1.86, p < 0.001), and the aHR was 1.56 (95% CI, 1.36–1.79, p < 0.001). The methotrexate nonusers exhibited an aHR (vs. controls) of 1.61 (95% CI, 1.40–1.85, p < 0.001), but the methotrexate users did not have a significantly higher aHR than the controls. The steroid nonusers had an aHR (vs. controls) of 1.69 (95% CI, 1.46–1.96, p < 0.001), but the aHR of the steroid users was not significantly higher than the control aHR. Patients with RA had a higher risk for RCD compared with the non-RA control cohort. Steroids or methotrexate use significantly reduces the risk of RCD occurrence in patients with RA. Siraitia grosvenorii is a type of fruit used in traditional Chinese medicine. Previous studies have shown that the conversion of saponins was often carried out by chemical hydrolysis, which can be problematic because of the environmental hazards it may cause and the low yield it produces. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to establish a continuous bioreactor with immobilized enzymes to produce siamenoside I and mogroside IV. The results show that the immobilization process of β-glucosidase exhibited the best relative activity with a glutaraldehyde (GA) concentration of 1.5%, carrier activation time of 1 h and binding enzyme time of 12 h. After the immobilization through GA linkage, the highest relative activity of β-glucosidase was recorded through the reaction with the substrate at 60 °C and pH 5. Subsequently, the glass microspheres with immobilized β-glucosidase were filled into the reactor to maintain the optimal active environment, and the aqueous solution of Siraitia grosvenorii extract was introduced by controlling the flow rate. The highest concentration of siamenoside I and mogroside IV were obtained at a flow rate of 0.3 and 0.2 mL/min, respectively. By developing this immobilized enzyme system, siamenoside I and mogroside IV can be prepared in large quantities for industrial applications.

Background: Despite a preferred endocrine therapy for women with estrogen and progesterone receptor-positive breast cancer, aromatase inhibitors (AIs) have been reported to increase risks of cardiovascular events. Given that breast cancer patients in Asia are younger at diagnosis, it is urgent to investigate this safety concern., Methods: Through the Taiwanese National Cohort, we identified breast cancer patients initiating selective estrogen receptor modulators (SERMs) or AIs from 2010 to 2016. Outcomes includes major adverse cardio- and cerebrovascular events (MACCEs). The average follow-up duration was five years., Results: We identified 16,730 breast cancer patients treated with SERMs and 11,728 receiving AIs. The population was older and had more comorbidities in the AI group than in the SERM group. After adjusting for age, cancer stage, cancer therapies, cardiovascular drugs and comorbidities, despite similar risks of MACCEs between AI and SERM users, the risk of HF was significantly higher in patients treated with SERMs after adjusted mortality as a competing risk. When divided by the age of 50 years, despite a similar MACCEs in the younger population, MACCEs remained significantly higher in the older population who received SERMs., Conclusions: In this Asian cohort, we found that among patients of old age or with advanced cancer stage, the use of SERMs was associated with a higher risk of cardiovascular events than the use of AIs.
