Milling quality directly affects production efficiency in rice, which is closely related to the brown rice recovery (BRR), the milled rice recovery (MRR) and the head milled rice recovery (HMRR). The present study investigated these three traits in 173 germplasms in two environments, finding abundant phenotypic variation. Three QTLs for BRR, two for MRR, and three for HMRR were identified in a genome-wide association study, five of these were identified in previously reported QTLs and three were newly identified. By combining the linkage disequilibrium (LD) analyses, the candidate gene LOC_Os05g08350 was identified. It had two haplotypes with significant differences and Hap 2 increased the BRR by 4.40%. The results of the qRT-PCR showed that the expression of LOC_Os05g08350 in small-BRR accessions was significantly higher than that in large-BRR accessions at Stages 4–5 of young panicle development, reaching the maximum value at Stage 5. The increase in thickness of the spikelet hulls of the accession carrying LOC_Os05g08350TT occurred due to an increase in the cell width and the cell numbers in cross-sections of spikelet hulls. These results help to further clarify the molecular genetic mechanism of milling-quality-related traits and provide genetic germplasm materials for high-quality breeding in rice. The mining of favorable SNP loci and haplotypes is of great significance for the further cloning and molecular-assisted breeding of alkalinity-tolerance genes in rice. To improve the utilization rate of saline–alkaline lands and the yield of rice, we used the 1,322,884 SNPs obtained from the sequencing 173 of rice accessions in this study. Alkalinity-tolerance-related traits, including the germination energy (GE), germination rate (GR), seedling length (SL), root length (RL), relative alkaline damage rate (RADR) of the GERADR of the GR, RADR of the SL and RADR of the RL, were evaluated in 2019 and 2020 and revealed abundant phenotypes in the studied population. A genome-wide association analysis detected 10 quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to alkalinity tolerance. In addition, a transcriptome sequencing analysis of the alkalinity-tolerant rice variety 'Yuedao 9' and the alkali-sensitive rice variety 'Tijin' under alkalinity stress and control conditions was performed. Three candidate genes that were predicted to be related to alkalinity tolerance in rice, namely LOC_Os06g06600, LOC_Os011g44680 and LOC_Os011g44600, were screened based on gene annotation, coding sequences and haplotype analysis. There is a growing interest in enhancing the bioactivity of TC4-based metallic biomaterials, which are known for their excellent biocompatibility. Bioactive glass (BG) has been recognized for its high potential in promoting bioactivity, particularly in osteo tissue engineering. This study focuses on investigating the influence of BG addition on the microstructure and electrochemical properties of TC4 coatings. The TC4/BG composite coatings were fabricated through laser cladding, and their microstructure was characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The electrochemical properties of the coatings were assessed through electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and potentiodynamic polarization tests in three different solutions. The results revealed that the incorporation of BG had a significant impact on the microstructure of the TC4 coatings, leading to the formation of a well-defined interface between the TC4 matrix and the BG aggregates. The distribution of BG aggregates within the TC4 matrix coating was found to be random and unrelated to the specific regions of the coating. The metallographic microstructure variations were attributed to different heat dissipation conditions during the laser cladding process. Furthermore, the electrochemical corrosion behavior of TC4/BG composite coatings reveals that they exhibit stability similar to that of passive films and good resistance against media corrosion compared to TC4, while also showing enhanced corrosion resistance in 3.5 wt% NaCl and Dulbecco's modified Eagle medium (DMEM) solutions, indicating their potential for biomedical applications; however, the corrosion resistance decreases gradually in all solutions, potentially due to the elevated Cl− concentration. Further research can explore bioactivity enhancement of TC4/BG composite coatings and investigate the long-term stability and biological response of these coatings in diverse physiological environments. Mining salt tolerance genes is significant for breeding high-quality salt-tolerant rice varieties in order to improve the utilization of saline–alkaline land. In this study, 173 rice accessions were measured for their germination potential (GP), germination rate (GR), seedling length (SL), root length (RL), germination potential relative to salt damage rate (GPR), germination rate relative to salt damage rate (GRR), seedling length relative to salt damage rate (SLR), relative salt damage rate at the germination stage (RSD) and comprehensive relative salt damage rate in the early seedling stage (CRS) under normal and salt stress conditions. Genome-wide association analysis was performed with 1,322,884 high-quality SNPs obtained by resequencing. Eight quantitative trait loci (QTLs) related to salt tolerance traits at the germination stage were detected in 2020 and 2021. They were related to the GPR (qGPR2) and SLR (qSLR9), which were newly discovered in this study. Three genes were predicted as salt tolerance candidate genes: LOC_Os02g40664, LOC_Os02g40810, and LOC_Os09g28310. At present, marker-assisted selection (MAS) and gene-edited breeding are becoming more widespread. Our discovery of candidate genes provides a reference for research in this field. Rice (Oryza sativa L.) appearance quality, which is mainly defined by grain shape and chalkiness, is an important target in rice breeding. In this study, we first re-sequenced 137 indica accessions and then conducted a genome-wide association study (GWAS) for six agronomic traits with the 2,998,034 derived single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) by using the best linear unbiased prediction (BLUP) values for each trait. The results revealed that 195 SNPs had significant associations with the six agronomic traits. Based on the genome-wide linkage disequilibrium (LD) blocks, candidate genes for the target traits were detected within 100 kb upstream and downstream of the relevant SNP loci. Results indicate that six quantitative trait loci (QTLs) significantly associated with six traits (qTGW4.1, qTGW4.2, qGL4.1, qGL12.1, qGL12.2, qGW2.1, qGW4.1, qGW6.1, qGW8.1, qGW8.2, qGW9.1, qGW11.1, qGLWR2.1, qGLWR2.2, qGLWR4.2, qPGWC5.1 and qDEC6.1) were identified for haplotype analysis. Among these QTLs, two (qTGW4.2 and qGW6.1), were overlapped with FLO19 and OsbZIP47, respectively, and the remaining four were novel QTLs. The shape of the rice flag leaf affects rice yield. Therefore, the detection of quantitative trait loci (QTLs) and alleles related to rice flag leaf shape is of great significance for rice yield improvement. Therefore, in 2019 and 2020, we carried out a genome-wide association study of flag leaf length (FLL), flag leaf width (FLW), flag leaf length–width ratio (FLR), and flag leaf area (FLA), considering 1.3 million single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in 173 rice accessions, in order to investigate the effects of various genes on flag leaf shape. An abundance of phenotypic variation was found, with respect to the four flag leaf shape parameters of these accessions. We identified one significant SNP position associated with FLL and FLR on chromosome 5 and one significant SNP position associated with FLW on chromosome 2, which were detected in both of the two years of the study period through general linear model (GLM) and mixed linear model (MLM). Furthermore, three candidate genes—LOC_Os02g56760, LOC_Os05g34380, and LOC_Os05g34600—were found to possibly be significantly related to flag leaf shape in rice. Haplotype analysis indicated that LOC_Os05g34380 is highly associated with flag leaf length and flag leaf length–width ratio, LOC_Os05g34600 is highly associated with flag leaf length, and LOC_Os02g56760 is highly associated with flag leaf width. Our results provide important genetic information for the molecular improvement of rice flag leaf shape, laying the foundation for further cloning and molecular-assisted breeding of flag leaf genes. Plant height (PH) and its component traits are critical determinants of lodging resistance and strongly influence yield in rice. The genetic architecture of PH and its component traits were mined in two mapping populations. In the natural population composed of 504 accessions, a total of forty simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers associated with PH and its component traits were detected across two environments via association mapping. Allele RM305-210 bp on chromosome 5 for PH had the largest phenotypic effect value (PEV) (−51.42 cm) with a reducing effect. Allele RM3533-220 bp on chromosome 9 for panicle length and allele RM264-120 bp on chromosome 8 for the length of upper first elongated internode (1IN) showed the highest positive PEV. Among the elongated internodes with negative effects being desirable, the allele RM348-130 bp showed the largest PEV (−7.48 cm) for the length of upper second elongated internode. In the chromosome segment substitution line population consisting of 53 lines, a total of nine QTLs were detected across two environments, with the phenotypic variance explained (PVE) ranging 10.07–28.42%. Among the detected QTLs, q1IN-7 explained the largest PVE (28.42%) for the 1IN, with an additive of 5.31 cm. The favorable allele RM257-125 bp on chromosome 9 for the 1IN increasing was detected in both populations. The favorable alleles provided here could be used to shape PH architecture against lodging. The outcrossing traits in rice (Oryza sativa L.) affect the yield of hybrid seed production. Using a cytoplasmic male sterile (CMS) line with good outcrossing traits, such as short flag leaf length (FLL), narrow flag leaf width (FLW), wide flag leaf angle (FLA), and elongated panicle neck length (PNL), for hybrid rice seed production, it is possible to avoid the procedure of cutting flag leaves and make the supplementary pollination feasible by machine. In this study, a japonica restorer C-bao as the receptor parent and a primitive japonica accession Ludao as the donor parent were used to construct a chromosome segment substitution line (CSSL) population. The CSSL population was used to detect quantitative trait loci (QTLs) for the four outcrossing traits using a likelihood ratio test based on the stepwise regression (RSTEP-LRT) method. The CSSL population constructed consisted of 163 lines covering 90.7% of the donor genome. Among the seven QTLs detected in the CSSL population, four QTLs were detected in both years. qFLL-4 explained 6.70% of the two-year-averaged phenotypic variance, and the alleles from Ludao decreased FLL 5.1 cm. qFLA-1.1 and qFLA-1.2 explained 7.85% and 21.29% of the 2-year-averaged phenotypic variance respectively, and the alleles from Ludao increased FLA 17.38° and 31.50°. qPNL-8 explained 8.87% of the 2-year-averaged phenotypic variance, and the alleles from Ludao increased PNL 4.44 cm. Salinity is a major factor limiting rice productivity, and developing salt-tolerant (ST) varieties is the most efficient approach. Seventy-eight ST introgression lines (ILs), including nine promising lines with improved ST and yield potential (YP), were developed from four BC 2 F 4 populations from inter-subspecific crosses between an elite Geng ( japonica ) recipient and four Xian ( indica ) donors at the Institute of Crop Sciences, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences. Genome-wide characterization of donor introgression identified 35 ST QTLs, 25 of which harbor 38 cloned ST genes as the most likely QTL candidates. Thirty-four are Xian-Geng differentiated ones with the donor ( Xian ) alleles associated with ST, suggesting differentiated responses to salt stress were one of the major phenotypic differences between the two subspecies. At least eight ST QTLs and many others affecting yield traits were identified under salt/non-stress conditions. Our results indicated that the Xian gene pool contains rich 'hidden' genetic variation for developing superior Geng varieties with improved ST and YP, which could be efficiently exploited by selective introgression. The developed ST ILs and their genetic information on the donor alleles for ST and yield traits would provide a useful platform for developing superior ST and high-yield Geng varieties through breeding by design in the future.
