Microorganisms play a crucial role in biogeochemical cycling within wetland ecosystems. Soil-environment-mediated seasonal changes in microbial structure require further investigation. However, the factors driving seasonal variations in the microbial abundance and diversity in the Daihai wetlands remain unclear. This study employed high-throughput sequencing technology to examine the bacterial community structure and diversity in the lakeshore zone of Daihai across different seasons and to explore the seasonal variations in the bacterial community structure and the influence of driving factors. The results indicated that Pseudomonadota and Bacteroidota dominate in spring and Pseudomonadota abundance further increases in summer, while organic-matter-decomposing microorganisms (e.g., Actinobacteriota and Bacteroidota) dominate in autumn. Microbial diversity indices indicated a significantly greater diversity in spring than in summer and autumn (p < 0.05). Changes in environmental variables were strongly associated with bacterial community changes, with variations in total nitrogen, ammonium nitrogen, and soil moisture content being identified as potential key factors influencing seasonal bacterial diversity trends. Furthermore, bacterial community assembly in spring is driven by both stochastic processes and environmental selection, suggesting that abundant nutrients and organic matter promote bacterial diversity. Two-stage meso- and thermophilic anaerobic digestion (TSMTAD) of food waste was examined and its microbiological structure was investigated. The first stage was designed for the primary storage of perishable food waste and the second stage for central biogas production. Mesophilic storage with initial neutralization and inoculation of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) resulted in an accumulation of lactic acid (21–23 g/L) with a decreased pH, in which bacterial members in facultative hetero-fermentation-type LAB dominated. Repeated fed-batch storage showed stable accumulation of lactic acid, retaining 89.3% (av.) carbon and preventing the growth of exogenous food pathogens. When the second stage of TSMTAD was compared with direct single-stage anaerobic digestion (SSAD) at 55 °C, the amount of methane accumulated was 1.48-fold higher (896 NmL/g-vs.). The methane yield of the original food refuse was 6.9% higher in the case of TSMTAD. The microbial community structures of both cases were similar, consisting of a sole thermophilic hydrogen-assimilating methanogen, Methanothermobacter thermautotrophicus. However, the abundance of bacteria belonging to two functional groups, H2 CO2 and acetic acid producer, and syntrophic acetate-oxidizing bacteria increased in TSMTAD. Thise study investigated the effect of three lignocellulolytic thermophilic Bacillus strains (F11, Q1, and FP4) on lignocellulose degradation, enzymatic activities, and microbial community structure in composting. The lignin degradation rate reached 36% in the presence of the inoculant, the hemicellulose degradation rate ranged from 43% (F11) to 51% (Q1), and cellulose degradation rates reached 57% in F11 and in FP4, which were significantly higher than the control (CK). The inoculation treatment could explain 28% of the lignin degradation for all three strains. The contribution of FP4 to hemicellulose and cellulose degradation was 30% and 20%, respectively. Compared to CK, lignin peroxidase activity in the water extract of the compost had increased by 66~145% for inoculation treatments, and manganese peroxidase and laccase activity increased by 114% and 78% for Q1. The inoculation stimulated the growth of indigenous bacteria with stronger lignocellulolytic enzyme-producing ability; such shifts in microbial communities were most likely responsible for the improved lignocellulose degradation. The addition of physical field enhancement measures to improve the purification effect of vertical flow artificial wetlands has gradually become popular. In this study, a vertical flow artificial wetland system reinforced by electric and magnetic fields was constructed. These fields were first optimized using finite element 3D simulation software to obtain the optimal electric and magnetic field parameters. Then, the pollutant removal effects and changes in microbial community structure were comparatively analyzed. The optimal electromagnetic field parameters (applied voltage of 15 V and applied magnetic field of 20 mT) resulted in significantly enhanced removal rates of chemical oxygen demand (COD), nitrate nitrogen (NH4+-N), total phosphorus (TP), and orthophosphorus (PO43−-P) in wastewater, with rates of 74.47%, 45.44%, 89.85%, and 90.04%, respectively. These rates were notably higher than those observed in the vertical flow artificial wetland system. The microbial community structure analysis revealed that the vertical flow constructed wetland with enhanced electric and magnetic fields exhibited (EM-VFCW) a more diverse and complex microbial community structure. Most research on plant–microbe interactions emphasize the effects of micronutrients on the rhizosphere microbial community structure. However, the influence of seed structures, particularly the radicle sheath, on microbial diversity at the seedling root tips under varying temperatures and humidity has been less explored. This study conducted controlled indoor experiments in the northern desert of Xinjiang to assess the radicle sheath's impact on microbial community composition, diversity, and function. The results indicated no significant changes in the Chao1 index for bacteria and fungi, but notable differences were observed in the Shannon and Simpson indices (p < 0.05). Under drought conditions, the radicle sheath significantly reduced bacterial infections without affecting fungi. Genus-level analysis showed an increased abundance of specific dominant bacterial groups when the radicle sheath was retained. NMDS analysis confirmed its significant effect on both bacterial and fungal community structures. LEfSe analysis identified 34 bacterial and 15 fungal biomarkers, highlighting the treatment's impacts on microbial taxonomic composition. Functional predictions using PICRUSt 2 revealed that the radicle sheath facilitated the conversion of CH4 to CH3OH and various nitrogen cycle processes under drought. Cadmium (Cd) pollution in soil has become a huge problem for agricultural production in China and even the world. Passivation and phytoremediation are two important remediation technologies for Cd pollution. In this study, the cadmium-contaminated and phosphorus-poor farmland soil around a mining area in Huainan was taken as the research object, and the remediation effect of biochar and phosphorus-containing materials on soil cadmium pollution was discussed. The results showed that the combined application of biochar and phosphorus-containing materials significantly reduced the pH of non-rhizosphere soil and rhizosphere soil, and increased the content of soil dissolved organic carbon (DOC). The combined application of biochar and phosphorus-containing materials significantly reduced soil pore water Cd and soil available Cd. In addition, both a single application of biochar and synergistic application of biochar and phosphorus-containing materials significantly increased the biomass of aboveground and underground parts of amaranth and soil urease and catalase activities. Phosphorus application reduced the bioavailability of Cd in soil. With the increase in phosphorus application, the content of available Cd in soil decreased significantly, and there was a certain negative correlation between Cd content and phosphorus content in plants. The crude metabolic extract from plant biocontrol bacteria plays a very important role in sustainable agricultural production. These extracts help maintain healthy plants and have very important application prospects in biotechnology related to alleviating apple replant disease (ARD). In this study, Bacillus velezensis XC1 (T1), Bacillus amyloliquefaciens QSB-6 (T2), and Lactobacillus reuteri LBR (T3) were examined to characterize the ability of their crude metabolic extracts to alleviate ARD. The high-throughput sequencing data of the soil microbial community structure were analyzed in relation to LBR crude metabolic extracts, and an extensive untargeted metabolomic analysis of UHPLC-Qex active components was performed. Active LC-MS/MS revealed that the main secondary metabolites involved in the biological control exerted by L. reuteri included 3-hydroxypropionaldehyde, extracellular polysaccharides (EPS), p-hydroxybenzoic acid, and azelaic acid. These crude metabolic extracts significantly inhibited the growth of soil pathogenic fungi, reduced the abundance of Fusarium, promoted the abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Pseudomonas, and optimized the soil microbial community structure. Improved modern extraction and purification technologies will be able to offer additional insights into the mechanism of action of these secondary metabolites and enable them to be used in biological preparations to prevent and control ARD in the future, as well as to allow harmful chemical fumigants to be discontinued. In the process of flue gas desulfurization and denitrification, the generation of high-sulfate wastewater containing nitrogen is a significant challenge for biological wastewater treatment. In this study, halophilic activated sludge was inoculated in a Sequencing Batch Reactor to remove nitrogen from wastewater with a high sulfate concentration (60 g/L). With the influent concentration of 180 mg/L, the removal rate of total nitrogen was more than 96.7%. The effluent ammonium nitrogen concentration was lower than 1.94 mg/L, and the effluent nitrate nitrogen and nitrite nitrogen concentrations were even lower than 0.77 mg/L. The salt tolerance of activated sludge is mainly related to the increase in the content of ectoine in microbial cells. The Specific Nitrite Oxidation Rate is quite low, while the Specific Nitrite Reduction Rate and Specific Nitrate Reduction Rate are relatively strong. In the system, there are various nitrogen metabolic processes, including aerobic nitrification, anaerobic denitrification, and simultaneous nitrification–denitrification processes. By analyzing the nitrogen metabolic mechanisms and microbial community structure of the reaction system, dominate bacteria can be identified, such as Azoarcus, Thauera, and Halomonas, which have significant nitrogen removal capabilities. This study aimed to explore the possibility of improving the fertility of lunar soil through the reuse of resources by composting household waste and collecting composting fermentation broth. The fermentation broth was used to culture a simulated lunar soil at different concentration gradients for 30 days under aerobic and anaerobic conditions. Microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen content, typical mineral elements, and the microbial community were tested to determine whether the fertility of the lunar soil had improved. Results showed that the microorganisms in the simulated lunar soil samples successfully adhered and grew under both aerobic and anaerobic experimental conditions. The simulated lunar soil samples cultured in the anaerobic environment outperformed those in the aerobic environment regarding microbial biomass growth and water-soluble mineral elements. The study results create opportunities for the future reuse of domestic garbage on the lunar base, providing a technical basis for the in situ reuse of lunar soil resources for plant cultivation. The increasing use of antibiotics in livestock poses environmental risks, leading to contamination of agricultural soils and propagation of microbial antibiotic-resistant genes (ARGs). This study examined the impacts of wood- and manure-derived biochar (BC) on antibiotic residues, ARGs, and microbial communities in sandy loam and clay loam soils amended with manure in Cynodon dactylon pastures. We hypothesized that BC amendments would influence the degradation of antibiotics and the structure of microbial communities based on their physicochemical properties and soil types. Our results demonstrated that wood BC reduced the concentrations of tetracycline and sulfonamides, particularly in sandy loam soil, due to its larger surface area and hydrophobic properties. In contrast, manure BC provided additional nutrients and supported atmospheric nitrogen-fixing microbial groups, especially in clay loam soil, while exhibiting variable efficiency in reducing antibiotic residues due to its lower surface area and higher ash content. These findings underscore the differential impacts of each BC type, emphasizing the need for tailored BC applications based on soil type to effectively mitigate antibiotic contamination and promote sustainable agricultural practices. As one of the most important fertilizers in agriculture, the fate of urea-derived nitrogen (urea-N) in agricultural ecosystems has been well documented. However, little is known about the function of urea-derived carbon (urea-C) in soil ecosystems, especially which soil microorganisms benefit most from the supply of urea-C and whether the utilization of urea-C by the rhizosphere and bulk soil microorganisms is affected by irrigation regimes. To address this, a soil pot experiment was conducted using 13C-labeled urea to investigate changes in the composition of the rhizosphere and bulk soil microbial communities and differences in the incorporation of urea-derived C into the rhizosphere and bulk soil phospholipid fatty acids (PLFA) pool under flooded irrigation (FI) and water-saving irrigation (CI). Our results suggest that the size and structure of the rhizosphere and bulk soil microbial communities were strongly influenced by the irrigation regime. The CI treatment significantly increased the total amount of PLFA in both the rhizosphere and bulk soil compared to the FI treatment, but it only significantly affected the abundance of Gram-positive bacteria (G+) in the bulk soil. In contrast, shifts in the microbial community structure induced by irrigation regimes were more pronounced in the rhizosphere soil than in the bulk soil. Compared to the FI treatment, the CI treatment significantly increased the relative abundances of the G+ and Actinobacteria in the rhizosphere soil (p < 0.05). According to the PLFA-SIP, most of the labeled urea-derived C was incorporated into 16:1ω7c, 16:0 and 18:1ω7c under both treatments. Despite these general trends, the pattern of 13C incorporation into the PLFA pool differed between the treatments. The factor loadings of individual PLFAs suggested that 18:1ω7c, 16:1ω7c and 16:1ω5c were relatively enriched in urea-C in the bulk soil, while 17:1ω8c, i16:0 and 16:0 were relatively enriched in urea-C in the rhizosphere soil under different irrigation regimes. The loadings also confirmed that 10-me16:0, cy17:0 and cy19:0 were relatively enriched in urea-C under the CI treatment, whereas 14:0, a15:0 and 15:0 were relatively enriched in urea-C under the FI treatment. Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. lycopersici has severely threatened sustainable greenhouse tomato production. However, the effects of nutrient enrichment due to excessive fertilization on Fusarium wilt remain unclear. This study aimed to investigate the relationships among soil nutrient enrichment, microbial community structure, and the occurrence of Fusarium wilt under greenhouse conditions. This study used chemical analysis and microbiological techniques to analyze rhizosphere soil samples from greenhouse tomato production areas with varying degrees of Fusarium wilt. The results showed that, as compared with the Health group, the rhizosphere soil of Disease group has a significant nutrient enrichment, which significantly influences bacterial diversity and structure. Particularly when soil NO3−–N content exceeds 170.43 mg kg−1, there was a significant reduction in the relative abundance of key biocontrol bacteria such as Bacillus and Lysinibacillus. This reduction indirectly contributes to an increase in Fusarium oxysporum abundance, subsequently elevating the likelihood of pathogen infection. Furthermore, the Disease group also exhibited a simplified co-occurrence network with a 22.37% reduction in competitive interactions between bacteria and fungi. These changes might collectively increase the risk of tomato Fusarium wilt infection. Meanwhile, the relative abundance of bacteria carrying antibiotic resistance genes significantly increased in the Disease group, which also reduced soil resistance. The rapid increase in reactive nitrogen (N) released into the environment by human activities has notably altered the structure and composition of forest soil microbial communities (SMCs), profoundly impacting the N cycle in terrestrial ecosystems. However, the response of soil microorganisms to nitrogen addition in different seasons is not clear. This study delved into how SMCs in a subtropical region of central Yunnan, China, specifically in an evergreen broad-leaved forest (EBLF), respond to N deposition during both the dry and wet seasons. Through high-throughput sequencing, we assessed the composition and structure of SMCs under varying N addition treatments across seasons, examining their interplay with soil chemical properties, enzyme activities, and community responses. The findings revealed significant outcomes following four years of N addition in the subtropical EBLF: (1) Significant changes were observed due to the interaction between N addition and seasonal changes. Soil pH significantly decreased, indicating increased soil acidification, particularly in the dry season. Increased moisture in the wet season mitigated soil acidification. (2) In the dry season, N addition led to a decrease in microbial richness and diversity. In the wet season, N addition increased microbial richness and diversity, alleviating the downward trend observed in the dry season. (3) N addition significantly impacted the composition of soil bacterial and fungal communities. Dominant fungal genera in the wet season were particularly sensitive to N addition. (4) Seasonal changes and N addition altered soil microbial community structures. Soil chemical properties and enzyme activities significantly influenced the microbial community structure. The results revealed that the PRFB group exhibited lower levels of NH4+-N, NO2−-N, NO3−-N, TN, TP, and Alk in pond water compared to the control group. The microbial diversity indices in the PRFB group showed a declining trend, while these indices were increasing in the control group. At the phylum level, there was a considerable increase in Proteobacteria abundance in the PRFB group throughout the culture period, suggesting that PRFBs may promote the proliferation of Proteobacteria. In the PRFB group, there was a remarkable decrease in bacterial populations related to carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus metabolism, including genera Rhodobacter, Rhizorhapis, Dinghuibacter, Candidatus Aquiluna, and Chryseomicrobium as well as the CL500_29_marine_group. Western Sichuan Yi suancai contains a group of highly functional microorganisms in an alpine and high-altitude ecological environment. Due to its unique salt-free fermentation process, it is nutritious and has a crispy texture. Six periods were established during fermentation: day 0, day 2, day 5, day 8, day 11, and day 14. The results showed that the antioxidant capacity and organic acid content increased during the fermentation process, while the pH gradually decreased, indicating that suancai from the later periods was better for supplementing the human body with acid substances and eliminating free radicals. Twenty-six flavour compounds were identified, including alcohols, esters, ketones, and acids. Ethyl alcohol, 3-methyl-1-butanol, ethyl methanoate, and acetic acid were the main contributors to the flavour, imparting floral and fruity notes to the suancai. Five dominant bacterial genera (Lactobacillus, Leuconostoc, Weissella, Klebsiella, and unclassified_o__Lactobacillales) were identified via high-throughput sequencing during the fermentation process, and there were nine dominant fungal genera (Dipodascaceae_gen_Incertae_sedis, Mucor, Pichia, unclassified__f__Dipodascaceaet, Cyberlindnera, Diutina, Trichosporon, Saccharomycopsis, and Wickerhamomyces). Correlation analysis showed that the antioxidant capacity was positively correlated with genera such as Lactobacillus, Mucor, and Alternaria, indicating that these microorganisms have important roles in enhancing the antioxidant properties of suancai. Meanwhile, some genera, such as Microbacterium, Herbaspirillum, Mortierella, and Sampaiozyma, promote the synthesis of alcohols, esters, acids, and ketones. This study revealed the interactions between microorganisms and metabolites during the fermentation of western Sichuan Yi suancai and provided a scientific basis for further understanding the fermentation mechanism of traditional suancai and improving the fermentation process. Simple Summary: The utilization of reclaimed land and enhancement of its productivity are crucial for alleviating China's food production shortage. Previous research has indicated that co-cultivating rice with frogs can enhance soil fertility. However, there is limited research on the use of integrated rice–frog farming techniques to improve soil fertility on reclaimed barren land for enhanced food production efficiency. Therefore, this study evaluated the impact of rice–frog co-cultivation on soil fertility and microbial diversity of reclaimed land. Experimental plots were established for rice monoculture, low-density rice–frog co-cultivation, and high-density rice–frog co-cultivation. The study found that during the rice maturity period, the soil fertility in the plots with high-density rice–frog co-cultivation was significantly higher compared to the rice monoculture plots. Additionally, rice–frog co-cultivation increased the soil microbial diversity and altered the structure of the microbial community compared to the rice monoculture. This research indicates that compared with rice monoculture, rice–frog co-cultivation can enhance the soil fertility and microbial diversity of reclaimed land. However, there are few studies on the use of integrated rice–frog farming technology to improve the fertility of reclaimed land and increase its efficiency in food production. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the rice–frog co-cropping mode on the soil fertility and microbial diversity of reclaimed land. A rice monoculture group (SF), low-density rice–frog co-cropping group (SD, 5000 frogs/mu, corresponds to 8 frogs/m2), and high-density rice–frog co-cropping group (SG, 10,000 frogs/mu, corresponds to 15 frogs/m2) were established and tested. The contents of total nitrogen, soil organic matter, available potassium, and available phosphorus of the soil in the SG group were significantly higher than those in the SF group (p < 0.05) in the mature stage of rice. Compared with the SF group, the SD and SG groups improved the soil microbial diversity and changed the structure of the microbial community. Intercropping, a well-established agroecological technique designed to bolster ecological stability, has been shown to have a significant impact on soil health. However, the specific effects of tea/Trachelospermum jasminoides intercropping on the physicochemical properties and functional microbial community structure in practical cultivation have not been thoroughly investigated. In this study, we utilized high-throughput sequencing technology on the 16S/ITS rDNA genes to assess the impact of tea intercropping with T. jasminoides on the composition, diversity, and potential functions of the soil microbial community in tea gardens. The results indicated that the tea/T. jasminoides intercropping system significantly increased pH levels, soil organic matter, available nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and enzyme activity, ultimately augmenting soil nutrient levels. Furthermore, an in-depth analysis of the bacterial co-occurrence network and topological structure portrayed a more intricate and interconnected soil bacterial community in tea gardens. Remarkably, the abundance of beneficial genera, including Burkholderia, Mesorhizobium, Penicillium, and Trichoderma, underwent a substantial increase, whereas the relative abundance of pathogenic fungi such as Aspergillus, Fusarium, and Curvularia experienced a marked decline. Functional predictions also indicated a notable enhancement in the abundance of microorganisms associated with nitrogen and carbon cycling processes. This study analyzed the effects of benzoic acid (BA) on the physicochemical properties and microbial community structure of perilla rhizosphere soil. The analysis was based on high-throughput sequencing technology and physiological and biochemical detection. The results showed that with the increase in BA concentration, soil pH significantly decreased, while the contents of total nitrogen (TN), alkaline nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and available potassium (AK) significantly increased. The activities of soil conversion enzymes urease and phosphatase significantly increased, but the activities of catalase and peroxidase significantly decreased. This indicates that BA can increase soil enzyme activity and improve nutrient conversion; the addition of BA significantly altered the composition and diversity of soil bacterial and fungal communities. The relative abundance of beneficial bacteria such as Gemmatimonas, Pseudolabrys, and Bradyrhizobium decreased significantly, while the relative abundance of harmful fungi such as Pseudogymnoascus, Pseudoeurotium, and Talaromyces increased significantly. Correlation analysis shows that AP, AN, and TN are the main physicochemical factors affecting the structure of soil microbial communities. This study elucidates the effects of BA on the physicochemical properties and microbial community structure of perilla soil, and preliminarily reveals the mechanism of its allelopathic effect on the growth of perilla. Salt-tolerant aerobic granular sludge(AGS) was successfully cultivated under the dual stress of tetracycline and 2.5% salinity, resulting in an average particle size of 435.0 ± 0.5 and exhibiting a chemical oxygen demand(COD) removal rate exceeding 80%, as well as excellent sedimentation performance. The analysis of metagenomics technology revealed a significant pattern of succession in the development of AGS. The proportion of Oleiagrimonas, a type of salt-tolerant bacteria, exhibited a gradual increase and reached 38.07% after 42 days, which indicated that an AGS system based on moderate halophilic bacteria was successfully constructed. The expression levels of targeted genes were found to be reduced across the entire AGS process and formation, as evidenced by qPCR analysis. The presence of int1 (7.67 log10 gene copies g−1 in 0 d sludge sample) enabled microbes to horizontally transfer ARGs genes along the AGS formation under the double pressure of TC and 2.5% salinity. These findings will enhance our understanding of ARG profiles and the development in AGS under tetracycline pressure, providing a foundation for guiding the use of AGS to treat hypersaline pharmaceutical wastewater. Clean tillage frequently causes the loss of soil nutrients and weakens microbial ecosystem service functions. In order to improve orchard soil nutrient cycling, enhance enzyme activities and microbial community structure in a "Jiro" sweet persimmon orchard, sod culture management was carried out to clarify the relationship among soil nutrient, microbial communities, and fruit yield and quality in persimmon orchard. The results showed that sod culture management increased the content of organic matter, total organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium in the soil, thus improving soil fertility. Compared with clean tillage orchards, sod culture methods significantly increased soil enzyme activities and microbial biomass carbon (MBC) content. The abundance-based coverage estimator (ACE) and the simplest richness estimators (Chao l) indices of the bacterial community and all diversity and richness indices of the fungal community significantly increased in the sod culture orchard, which indicated that sod culture could increase the richness and diversity of the soil microbial community. The dominant bacterial phyla were Proteobacteria (32.21~41.13%) and Acidobacteria (18.76~23.86%), and the dominant fungal phyla were Mortierellomycota (31.11~83.40%) and Ascomycota (3.45~60.14%). Sod culture drove the composition of the microbial community to increase the beneficial microbiome. Correlation analyses and partial least squares path modeling (PLS-PM) comparative analyses showed that the soil chemical properties (mainly including soil organic matter content, total organic carbon content, total potassium content, and total nitrogen content), soil enzyme activities and soil microorganisms were strongly correlated with fruit yield and quality. Meanwhile, soil nutrient, soil enzyme, and soil microbes had also influenced each other. Our results showed that long-term ryegrass planting could improve soil fertility, enzyme activities, and microbial community compositions. Hydrochar as a carbon-based fertiliser is hypothesised to permanently improve soils by modifying soil carbon quality through the regulation of soil organic carbon dynamics, aggregation properties and microbial diversity. However, the interactions between soil organic carbon (SOC) molecular structure, soil aggregates and soil microbial communities as a result of hydrochar application have not been fully elucidated. In this study, the use of hydrochar derived from duck farm biomass waste for a maize cultivation experiment verified that hydrochar had a promoting effect on maize growth, effectively increasing the nutrient supply to the soil. The application of hydrochar increased the soil organic carbon content by 78 to 253 per cent, which was dominated by CHON-type lignin, carbohydrates and condensed aromatic structural compounds. Meanwhile, hydrochar had a significant effect on both soil aromatic structures and oxygenated functional groups, forming more soil macroaggregates. In addition, hydrochar had a positive effect on soil bacterial abundance. This study suggests that the key mechanism by which hydrochar regulates soil carbon dynamics is mainly through the stabilising effect of hydrochar on macroaggregates while increasing the abundance of carbon-related microscopic bacteria. Anaerobic digestion is an important means to turn agricultural waste into resources and an important way to address the challenges in treating vegetable residues in China. In this study, the co-digestion of dairy manure with tomato residue was investigated to clarify the effect of the total solids (TS) of the digestion substrate on methane's production and mechanism using the self-made anaerobic digestion device. The results showed that all treatments could rapidly ferment methane and that the daily methane production showed a trend of increasing first and then decreasing. The optimal concentrations of the digestion substrate for liquid anaerobic digestion (L-AD), hemi-solid-state anaerobic digestion (HSS-AD), and solid-state anaerobic digestion (SS-AD) were 10%, 18%, and 25%, respectively. Compared with SS-AD and HSS-AD, L-AD gas production peaked 3–6 days earlier. Treatment TS25 had the best cumulative methane production, reaching 117.4 mL/g VS. However, treatment TS6 had acid accumulation and a very unstable system. The cumulative methane production of SS-AD was higher than that of HSS-AD and L-AD. Firmicutes and Bacteroidetes were the dominant flora, and Methanoculleus, Methanosarcina, and Methanobrevibacter were the main archaeal groups. The TS significantly changed the microbial community composition of the digestion system, especially the low TS treatment. The results presented herein indicated that TS significantly changed the bacterial and archaeal community composition of the digestion system, and thus with the increase in TS from 6% to 25%, the methane yield increased. The biological degradation of plant residues in the soil or on the soil surface is an integral part of the natural life cycle of annual plants and does not have adverse effects on the environment. Crop straw is characterized by a complex structure and exhibits stability and resistance to rapid microbial decomposition. In this study, we conducted a microcosm experiment to investigate the dynamic succession of the soil microbial community and the functional characteristics associated with lignocellulose-degrading pathways. Additionally, we aimed to identify lignocellulose-degrading microorganisms from the straw of three crop species prevalent in Northeast China: soybean (Glycine max Merr.), rice (Oryza sativa L.), and maize (Zea mays L.). Our findings revealed that both the type of straw and the degradation time influenced the bacterial and fungal community structure and composition. Metagenome sequencing results demonstrated that during degradation, different straw types assembled carbohydrate-active enzymes (CAZymes) and KEGG pathways in distinct manners, contributing to lignocellulose and hemicellulose degradation. Furthermore, isolation of lignocellulose-degrading microbes yielded 59 bacterial and 14 fungal strains contributing to straw degradation, with fungi generally exhibiting superior lignocellulose-degrading enzyme production compared to bacteria. Experiments were conducted to assess the potential synergistic effects of synthetic microbial communities (SynComs) comprising both fungi and bacteria. These SynComs resulted in a straw weight loss of 42% at 15 days post-inoculation, representing a 22% increase compared to conditions without any SynComs. Cow dung is a kind of high quality and renewable biological resource. Biochar made from cow dung can be used as a soil amendment to improve soil nutrient status. The relationship between soil water and phosphorus is very close, and the water status determines the form, content, and availability of phosphorus. In order to investigate the effects of biochar on soil inorganic phosphorus components, available phosphorus, enzyme activities related to the phosphorus cycle, microbial functional genes, and seedling growth under different soil water conditions were investigated. Field experiments were carried out by setting different water conditions (30%, 60%, and 100%) and biochar addition (0 t hm−2, 2.63 t hm−2, 5.26 t hm−2, and 7.89 t hm−2). The results showed that applying biochar significantly increased the soil's accessible phosphorus content and the phosphorus content in both the aboveground and subsurface parts of P. euphratica seedlings. This is mainly attributable to biochar's direct and indirect effects on soil properties. Because biochar is naturally alkaline, it raises soil pH and reduces acid phosphatase activity in the soil around P. euphratica seedlings in the rhizosphere. Perhaps the alkaline phosphatase level first showed an upward trend due to the combined impacts of water and biochar, and then it started to decline when the biochar addition was increased. Soil phosphorus functional genes phoC, phoD, gcd, and pqqc had an increase in copy number with biochar addition but not without treatment. Indirectly, the biochar treatment increased the soil's phosphorus availability by increasing the population of the phosphate-solubilizing bacteria Fusarium and Sphingomonas. The use of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) residue as a crop culture substrate has unique advantages in alleviating the obstacles associated with continuous monocropping, such as increasing production, improving quality and alleviating pests and diseases. However, the effect of TCM residue application on substrates in continuous monocropping practices has not been determined. In this study, the cucumber variety "Jinyou No. 10" was used as the material, and fermented TCM residue, vermiculite and perlite were used as organic substrates (3:1:1). The cucumbers were cultivated on substrates for different durations of continuous monocropping, which were the first cropping cycle (A1), second cropping cycle (A2), third cropping cycle (A3) and fourth cropping cycle (A4). The control (A0) was the substrate sample without any crop planted in it. After the cucumbers were harvested, substrate samples (areas around the cucumber roots) were collected. The physiochemical properties of the cultivated substrates were determined, and the microbial community structures were analyzed through 16S rRNA and ITS sequencing. The physiochemical indices of the substrates with different durations of continuous monocropping (A1–A4) were significantly different than those of the control (A0) substrate. Moreover, the continuous cropping of cucumber had greater effects on fungal communities than on bacterial communities. Bacterial community structure analysis revealed a greater proportion of important bacterial taxa (Proteobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Nitrospirae) in the continuous monocropping substrates than in the A0 substrate. For the fungal community, Ascomycota accounted for the largest percentage of the fungal community in all the samples. The diversity of the microbial community was found to be influenced primarily by electrical conductivity, organic matter content, pH and total potassium content according to the correlation analysis of physicochemical properties and relative abundance of the microbial community. Continuous cropping is the main form of cultivation in Chinese agriculture. The bacterial community plays an important role in maintaining the healthy growth of plants. However, there are few reports on the composition and dynamics of the bacterial community structure under continuous cropping of Lonicera japonica Thunb. High-throughput sequencing was used to monitor the variation in the soil bacterial community structure of different monocropping years of Lonicera japonica Thunb., as well as the correlation between soil characteristics and bacterial community. Meanwhile, antagonistic bacteria for Fusarium oxysporum pathogens were isolated and functionally verified by culture-dependent techniques and pot experiments. Bacterial community diversity and structure changed significantly with the increase in the years of Lonicera japonica Thunb. succession. However, some beneficial bacteria, such as Bacillus and Nitrosospira, were gradually depleted. The complexity of the bacteria co-occurrence networks decreased with increasing years of cropping. FAPROTAX-based functional prediction showed that the abundance of genes related to carbon, nitrogen, sulfur metabolism and chitinlysis were reduced with the extended crop succession. Furthermore, the three Bacillus strains that were strongly antagonistic toward Fusarium oxysporum and the pot experiment demonstrated they significantly promoted Lonicera japonica Thunb. growth. The Barents Sea shelf is one of the most economically promising regions in the Arctic in terms of its resources and geographic location. However, benthic microbial communities of the northeastern Barents Sea are still barely studied. Here, we present a detailed systematic description of the structures of microbial communities located in the sediments and bottom water of the northeastern Barents Sea based on 16S rRNA profiling and a qPCR assessment of the total prokaryotic abundance in 177 samples. Beta- and alpha-diversity analyses revealed a clear difference between the microbial communities of diverse sediment layers and bottom-water fractions. We identified 101 microbial taxa whose representatives had statistically reliable distribution patterns between these ecotopes. Analysis of the correlation between microbial community structure and geological data yielded a number of important results—correlations were found between the abundance of individual microbial taxa and bottom relief, thickness of marine sediments, presence of hydrotrolite interlayers, and the values of pH and Eh. We also demonstrated that a relatively high abundance of prokaryotes in sediments can be caused by the proliferation of Deltaproteobacteria representatives, in particular, sulfate and iron reducers. Heavy metal (HMe) pollution in regions with mining and metallurgy activities is known to be a serious environmental problem worldwide. Hydrological processes contribute to the dissemination of HMes (drainage, precipitation, flow rate). The aim of the present study is to investigate the microbial community structure in ten river sediments sampled in different regions of East Kazakhstan, which are contaminated with HMes. The overall degree of sediment contamination with HMes (Cr, Cu, Zn, Pb, and Cd) was assessed using the pollution index Zc, which ranged from 0.43 to 21.6, with the highest in Ridder City (Zc = 21.6) and Ust-Kamenogorsk City, 0.8 km below the dam of the hydroelectric power station (Zc = 19.6). The tested samples considerably differed in organic matter, total carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus content, as well as in the abundance of HMe-related functional gene families and antibiotic resistance genes. Metagenomic analysis of benthic microorganisms showed the prevalence of Proteobacteria (88.84–97.61%) and Actinobacteria (1.21–5.98%) at the phylum level in all samples. At the class level, Actinobacteria (21.68–57.48%), Betaproteobacteria (19.38–41.17%), and Alphaproteobacteria (10.0–39.78%) were the most common among the classified reads. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first study on the metagenomic characteristics of benthic microbial communities exposed to chronic HMe pressure in different regions of East Kazakhstan. In this communication, we present an innovative approach leveraging advanced Machine Learning (ML) and Artificial Intelligence (AI) techniques, specifically the Non-Negative Matrix Factorization (NMF) method, to analyze downward and upward light spectra collected by Hyperspectral Ocean Color Radiometer (HyperOCR, HOCR) sensors in the water column. Our work focuses on the development of a robust and efficient tool for unraveling the structure and activities of natural microbial assemblages in the ocean. By applying the NMF method to HyperOCR data, we successfully extracted five spectral signatures, representing unique patterns in the data. These signatures were instrumental in predicting the abundances of various microbial components, including bacteria, heterotrophic nanoflagellates, and picoeukaryotes, showcasing the potential of ML and AI in advancing oceanographic studies. To validate these methods, the study area included a shallow coastal area under the influence of freshwater inflow and an open offshore area with a depth of 100 m. The study sites in coastal and offshore waters (Kaštela Bay and Stončica Vis, respectively) had significantly different hydrographic and microbiological characteristics. Kaštela Bay had lower temperatures and salinity than the site on Vis. The use of phosphorus-containing chemical corrosion and scale inhibitors has been found to result in excessive phosphorus discharge and an inability to reduce the high concentration of CODcr in the circulating cooling water, thereby making it challenging to comply with increasingly stringent sewage discharge standards. This study aims to assess the practicality of utilizing biological corrosion and scale inhibitors in coal power plants' operation, as well as investigating the correlation between water quality indicators and microbial communities during the conversion period. The data illustrates that, in comparison to the chemical method, there is a decrease in turbidity of the circulating water from 19.44 NTU to 9.60 NTU, a reduction in CODcr from 71.55 mg/L to 45.47 mg/L, and a drop in TP from 2.35 mg/L to 0.38 mg/L. Microbial community analysis during the transition period reveals that microorganisms rapidly establish a new equilibrium in the circulating water, sediment, and fiber ball, resulting in significantly different microbial community structures. The relative abundance of corrosive microorganisms such as Flavobacterium, Pedomicrobium, and Hydrogenophaga is significantly diminished in the circulating water, whilst the abundance of anaerobic microorganisms like Anaerolineaceae and Rhodopseudomonas in the sediment also declines. Conversely, there is an increased presence of microorganisms associated with contaminant degradation, such as CL500-3 and SM1A02. These findings suggest a decrease in the risk of system corrosion and an enhancement in contaminant degradation capability. This study provides evidence supporting the replacement of chemical agents with biological agents in circulating cooling water systems, contributing to more environmentally friendly and sustainable practices. Saline–alkali soils exhibit ionic toxicities associated with neutral salinity, as well as a high pH that hinders the exclusion of sodium ions and absorption of vital nutrients; thus, obstructing the development of coastal shelterbelts. A three-year field experiment using a high-soil-pH site was conducted for this study to investigate the influences of five prospective amendments on the soil microenvironments of different soil layers compared to a control. Firstly, the bacterial phyla Proteobacteria, Firmicutes, and Actinobacteria were found to be the most predominant in the samples. As for the fungi phylum, Ascomycota was identified as the most abundant. Similar to Module 1's findings, the relative abundances of Ascomycota varied across treatments. Additionally, differences in the ACE index were primarily observed in the deeper soil layers, where all five soil amendments increased the bacterial ACE index compared to the CK (no additive). Only the BA (biochar mixed with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi) and AM (arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi on its own) treatments significantly increased the fungal ACE index. In the 20–40 cm soil layer, the pH value of the control group was significantly higher than that of all other treatments, except for the AM treatment. However, the AM treatment induced significantly higher soil enzyme activities and available nutrients compared to the CK. Moreover, the Mantel test showed significant correlations between the Module 1 community, the generalist (microbial species that serve as module hubs and connectors, primarily for Acidobacteria) community and soil pH, electrical conductivity, enzyme activities, as well as bacterial and fungal ACE indices. Pearson's correlation revealed a significantly positive association between enzyme activities and available nutrients. Our findings suggested that keystone microbial species have the potential to improve the availability of soil nutrients through the regulation of microbial diversity and stimulation of soil enzyme activities, to ultimately ameliorate saline–alkali soil. Insects harbor diverse assemblages of bacterial and fungal symbionts, which play crucial roles in host life history. Insects and their various symbionts represent a good model for studying host–microbe interactions. Phylosymbiosis is used to describe an eco-evolutionary pattern, providing a new cross-system trend in the research of host-associated microbiota. The phylosymbiosis pattern is characterized by a significant positive correlation between the host phylogeny and microbial community dissimilarities. Although host–symbiont interactions have been demonstrated in many insect groups, our knowledge of the prevalence and mechanisms of phylosymbiosis in insects is still limited. Here, we provide an order-by-order summary of the phylosymbiosis patterns in insects, including Blattodea, Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, and Lepidoptera. Then, we highlight the potential contributions of stochastic effects, evolutionary processes, and ecological filtering in shaping phylosymbiotic microbiota. Phylosymbiosis in insects can arise from a combination of stochastic and deterministic mechanisms, such as the dispersal limitations of microbes, codiversification between symbionts and hosts, and the filtering of phylogenetically conserved host traits (incl., host immune system, diet, and physiological characteristics). Rubber tree plantations (Hevea brasiliensis) are expanding into the tropical regions of southwest China to ensure production to meet the growing demand for latex. The effects of long-term plantations on soil carbon processes are still unclear. Also, the effects of the plant's rhizosphere on the decomposition of soil organic matter (SOM) play a crucial role in predicting soil carbon dynamics. The rhizosphere and soils corresponding to a chronosequence of ages (4, 15 and 30 years) of rubber plantations were collected and incubated to determine the effect of the rhizosphere (RE) on SOM decomposition. We also examined the soil physicochemical properties; bacterial community structure; and root morphological, chemical, and physiological traits to further explore the underlying mechanisms of the RE on SOM decomposition. The REs on SOM decomposition varied significantly in the different age classes of the rubber plantations, and the higher the REs on SOM decomposition in an older plantation might limit the accumulation of organic carbon in the soil. Root traits, including the specific root length, root nitrogen content, and root carbon/nitrogen ratio, varied significantly in response to the plantation age and explained more of the variance in the RE on SOM decomposition than the soil and microbial properties. Due to the changing root morphological and chemical traits along the age chronosequence, the rhizosphere bacterial community composition tended to shift the carbon utilisation strategy and the bulk soil nitrogen content decreased. These variations also affected the RE on SOM decomposition. Our results indicate that the development of rubber plantations would prevent soil carbon accumulation, especially in the rhizosphere, by increasing the RE on SOM decomposition, which would be predicated by root morphological and chemical traits. We conducted a short-term laboratory soil warming incubation experiment, sampling both warmed and un-warmed soils from a subtropical plantation in southeastern China, incubating them at 20 °C, 30 °C, and 40 °C. Our aim was to study the SOC mineralization response to increasing temperatures. Our findings revealed that the temperature sensitivity (Q10) of SOC mineralization to short-term experimental warming varied between the warmed soil and the un-warmed soil. The Q10 of the un-warmed soil escalated with the temperature treatment (20–30 °C: 1.31, 30–40 °C: 1.63). Conversely, the Q10 of the warmed soil decreased (20–30 °C: 1.57, 30–40 °C: 1.41). Increasing temperature treatments decreased soil substrate availability (dissolved organic C) in both un-warmed and warmed soil. The C-degrading enzyme in un-warmed soil and warmed soil had different trends at different temperatures. In addition, warming decreased soil microbial biomass, resulting in a decrease in the total amount of phospholipid fatty acids (PLFAs) and a decrease in the abundance of fungi and Gram-negative bacteria (GN) in both un-warmed and warmed soil. The ratio of fungal to bacterial biomass (F:B) in un-warming soil was significantly higher than that in warmed soil. A drop in the microbial quotient (qMBC) coupled with a rise in the metabolic quotient (qCO2) indicated that warming amplified microbial respiration over microbial growth. The differential Q10 of SOC mineralization in un-warmed and warmed soil, in response to temperature across varying soil, can primarily be attributed to shifts in soil dissolved organic C (DOC), alterations in C-degrading enzyme activities, and modifications in microbial communities (F:B). The objective of this study was to explore the microbial diversity, volatile flavor substances, and their potential correlations in inner and surface Chinese Qingcheng Mountain traditional bacon (CQTB). The results showed that there were 39 volatile flavor substances in inner and surface CQTB detected by headspace solid-phase microextraction and gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (HS-SPME-GC-MS). Moreover, significant differences in volatile flavor substances between the inner and surface CQTB were observed. Sixteen key volatile flavor substances were screened (OAV > 1), including guaiacol, nonanal, ethyl isovalerate, and others. High-throughput sequencing (HTS) result indicated that Firmicutes, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria were the predominant bacterial phyla, and Ascomycota and Mucoromycota were the predominant fungal phyla. Staphylococcus, Psychrobacter, and Brochothrix were the predominant bacteria, and Debaryomyces, Penicillium, and Mucor were the predominant fungal genera. Spearman correlation coefficient analysis suggested that Apiotrichum and Lactobacillus were closely and positively correlated with the formation of key phenol compounds. The present work demonstrates the microbial diversity and related volatile flavor substances and their potential correlations in CQTB and provides a theoretical basis for the development of microbial starter culture and green processing of CQTB. Our study was focused on the characterization of landfill leachates derived from young (YDS) and matured (MDS) dumpsites in terms of the abundance of micropollutants, antimicrobial resistance genes (ARG), and microbial community structure. The concentrations of poly- and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) were found to be higher in MDS compared to YDS, i.e., 13.19 and 7.16 μg/L, respectively. Among pharmaceutical compounds, ibuprofen was detected at the highest concentrations, i.e., 12.54, 12.81, and 13.13 μg/L, in the leachates derived from MDS, YDS, and ponds. The distribution of bacteria, archaea, eukaryotes, and viruses in the three leachate samples was as follows: 85.15 ÷ 88.04%, 9.13 ÷ 12.29%, 2.20 ÷ 2.68%, and 0.12 ÷ 0.15%, respectively. In total, 31 distinct families of ARGs were identified, comprising a total of 80 ARGs. Incubation of P. putida MSCL650 in sterile leachate from the pond resulted in decreasing the minimum inhibitory concentrations for six antibiotics as compared to cells incubated in nutrient broth. Fruit trees are perennial crops that grow in one place for their whole lives, which leads to the deterioration of the soil as well as a decline in fruit quality and yield. Microbial diversity and community structure are important soil factors affecting stress resistance and the quality of fruit trees. Additionally, biogas fertilizer also plays an important role in improving fruit quality. Whether biogas fertilizer can improve continuous cropping barriers by affecting microbial diversity and community structure remains to be further investigated. Therefore, 7-year-old Fuji apples were used as material, and biogas fertilizer was applied continuously for three years. The results show that the contents of soil organic matter (SOM), available nitrogen (AN), available phosphorus (AP), and soil porosity (SP) increased by 0.712, 0.217, 1.089, and 0.401 after applying biogas fertilizer, respectively. The concentrations of vitamin C, titratable acid, and soluble solids also significantly increased. We also found that the relative abundance of dominant soil flora significantly increased, such as Sphingomonas (g_Sphingomonas), Chlamydomonas (g_Chlamydomonas), and Stachybotry (g_Stachybotry), while the relative abundance of inferior flora significantly decreased, such as Cryptococcus (g_Cryptococcus) and Alternaria (g_Alternaria). In summary, biogas fertilizer can improve the physicochemical properties of the soil as well as the structure and diversity of the microbial communities in rainfed orchards, resulting in higher fruit quality. Microbiome analyses are essential for understanding microorganism composition and diversity, but interpretation is often challenging due to biological and technical variables. DNA extraction is a critical step that can significantly bias results, particularly in samples containing a high abundance of challenging-to-lyse microorganisms. Taking into consideration the distinctive microenvironments observed in different bodily locations, our study sought to assess the extent of bias introduced by suboptimal bead-beating during DNA extraction across diverse clinical sample types. The question was whether complex targeted extraction methods are always necessary for reliable taxonomic abundance estimation through amplicon sequencing or if simpler alternatives are effective for some sample types. Hence, for four different clinical sample types (stool, cervical swab, skin swab, and hospital surface swab samples), we compared the results achieved from extracting targeted manual protocols routinely used in our research lab for each sample type with automated protocols specifically not designed for that purpose. Unsurprisingly, we found that for the stool samples, manual extraction protocols with vigorous bead-beating were necessary in order to avoid erroneous taxa proportions on all investigated taxonomic levels and, in particular, false under- or overrepresentation of important genera such as Blautia, Faecalibacterium, and Parabacteroides. However, interestingly, we found that the skin and cervical swab samples had similar results with all tested protocols. Our results suggest that the level of practical automation largely depends on the expected microenvironment, with skin and cervical swabs being much easier to process than stool samples. Amendments with activators or microorganisms to enhance phytoremediation in toxic-metal-polluted soils have been widely studied. In this research, the production of indoleacetic acid, siderophore, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylate (ACC) deaminase by phosphate-solubilizing bacteria was investigated during a pure culture experiment. Pot experiments were performed using Cd-polluted soil with the following treatments: control (CK, only ultrapure water), orange-peel-based activator (OG), and a combination of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (Acinetobacter pitti) and OG (APOG). Ryegrass plant height and fresh weight, Cd content in ryegrass, total and available Cd soil content, soil enzyme activity, and soil bacterial diversity were determined in this work. The findings showed that the height of ryegrass in OG and APOG increased by 14.78% and 21.23%. In the APOG group, a decreased ratio of Cd was 3.37 times that of CK, and the bioconcentration factor was 1.28 times that of CK. The neutral phosphatase activity of APOG was 1.33 times that of CK and catalase activity was 1.95 times that of CK. The activity of urease was increased by 35.48%. APOG increased the abundance of beneficial bacteria and Proteobacteria was the dominant bacterium, accounting for 57.38% in APOG. Redundancy analysis (RDA) showed that nutrient elements were conducive to the propagation of the dominant bacteria, the secretion of enzymes, and the extraction rate of Cd in the soil. The possible enhancement mechanism of phytoremediation of cadmium by A. pitti combined with OG was that, on the one hand, APOG increased soil nutrient elements and enzyme activities promoted the growth of ryegrass. On the other hand, APOG activated Cd and boosted the movement of Cd from soil to ryegrass. This research offers insight for the combination of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria with an orange-peel-based activator to improve phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils and also provides a new way for the resource utilization of fruit residue. Bioremediation is a good alternative to dispose of the excessive nitrate (NO3−) in soil and alleviate the secondary salinization of soil, but the presence of atrazine in soil interferes with the bioremediation process. In the present study, the biodegradable composite carbon source with different dosages was added to the atrazine-contaminated soil to intensify the bioremediation of excessive NO3−. The atrazine-contaminated soil with a 25 g/kg composite carbon source achieved the optimal NO3− removal performance (92.10%), which was slightly higher than that with a 5 g/kg composite carbon source (86.15%) (p > 0.05). Unfortunately, the negative effects of the former were observed, such as the distinctly higher emissions of N2O, CO2 and a more powerful global warming potential (GWP). Microbial community analysis showed that the usage of the composite carbon source clearly decreased the richness and diversity of the microbial community, and greatly stimulated nitrogen metabolism and atrazine degradation (p < 0.05). To sum up, the application of a 5 g/kg composite carbon source contributed to guaranteeing bioremediation performance and reducing adverse environmental impacts at the same time. Given the carbon limitation of low C/N wastewater, the improvement of nitrogen-removal efficiency remains a challenging task of municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in China. In this study, a partial nitrification/anammox (PN/A) system was established to facilitate the anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic (A2/O) treatment of low C/N (C/N = 3) wastewater with insufficient carbon sources. Effects of dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and internal reflux ratio on nitrogen-removal efficiency and pathway were investigated. Under the optimal DO (0.5–0.8 mg·L−1) and internal reflux ratio (250%), the highly efficient NH4+-N removal (97.21%) and TN removal (80.92%) were achieved based on PN/A. Moreover, the relative abundance of ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (Nitrosomonas) was 3 times higher than the abundance of nitrite-oxidizing bacteria (Nitrospira) in phase V, which was the main cause of PN in the reactor. Anaerobic ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (Candidatus Brocadia, Pirellula, and Gemmata) were also found and considered as the key microbes involved in anammox. This study reports that the A2/O process can achieve advanced nitrogen removal of low C/N wastewater based on PN/A by optimizing conventional process parameters. Anaerobic digestion, despite its preferable use as a treatment for high organic matter polluted waste streams, is susceptible to inhibitors, salt included. Therefore, two different experiments were conducted to observe the responses of bacterial and archaeal communities to hypersaline environments. In the first experiment, salt was added gradually, while in the second experiment, salt was added rapidly (so-called salt shocks were performed). The results of the gradual addition of salt showed a recovery of methane production after the salt concentration decreased. The NaCl concentration of 28.2 g/L seems to be the limit between stable operation and occurrence inhibition. The specific biogas production varied between 0.490 and 0.562 m3/kgtCOD during the stepwise salt addition, depending on the salt concentration, while the maximal achieved COD removal was 79.8%. The results of the rapid salt addition showed good recovery of the bacterial community, while a reduction of salt-sensitive species was observed in the archaeal community. The trend of specific biogas production during rapid salt addition was stable with an average value of 0.590 m3/kgtCOD, and it was observed that higher concentrations of up to 39.4 g/L of NaCl were tolerated. The maximum COD removal achieved during rapid salt addition was 83.1%. In conclusion, certain bacterial and archaeal communities were well-adapted to the hypersaline environment and remained active during the anaerobic digestion of substrates with high salt concentration. Microbial communities play crucial roles in the biogeochemical cycling of many important soil elements. Pesticides are known to affect non-targeted soil microorganisms. Glyphosate (GP) and diquat (DQ), two commonly used non-selective herbicides, often co-exist in lateritic paddy soil rich in iron/aluminum oxides. However, there is limited information on their co-impact on microbial community structure and diversity in this type of soil. Here, the short-term effects of combined exposure to GP and DQ on microbial diversity and community structure shifts were investigated in lateritic paddy soil from a tropical agricultural region (Hainan, China). The combined utilization dosages of two herbicides were set in three concentrations: low concentration (1 fold of the recommended dosage), medium concentration (10 fold of the recommended dosage) and high concentration (100 fold of the recommended dosage). The structure and diversity of microbial communities were determined via 16S rRNA and ITS gene high-throughput sequencing. The results revealed that Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria were the most sensitive microbial phyla to the combined exposure of GP and DQ in lateritic paddy soil. The combined exposure to GP and DQ increased the abundance of Actinobacteria but significantly inhibited that of Proteobacteria, especially at low and medium concentrations. Compared with CK, mixed herbicide (GP + DQ) had no adverse effects on the richness of bacteria and fungi communities as well as on the diversity of bacteria communities, but it significantly decreased the diversity of fungi communities at high concentrations within 28 days. However, the effects of combined exposure to GP and DQ on soil microbial richness and diversity were not significantly different from those of separate exposure of the two herbicides. In conclusion, the combined application of GP and DQ had no more adverse effects on soil microorganisms. Therefore, these two herbicides can be used reasonably in actual agricultural production. Dissolved oxygen (DO) plays an important role in the performance of biological wastewater treatment systems. This study investigated the effect of the DO concentration on nutrient removal performance and microbial community structure in side-stream activated sludge hydrolysis (SSH) and conventional anaerobic/anoxic/aerobic (A2O) processes. The results showed that the change in DO had little effect on the removal performance of chemical oxygen demand (COD), and the removal efficiencies were about 90% for both reactors. Compared with the high DO level (4.1–6.9 mg/L), the A2O and SSH reactors had better nitrogen removal performance at low (0.5–2.2 mg/L) and moderate (2.2–3.9 mg/L) DO levels, with ammonia (NH4+-N) removal efficiencies of 88–89% and 89–91%, respectively, and total nitrogen (TN) removal efficiencies of 74–76% and 75–81%, respectively. Directly reducing the DO concentration from high to low reduced the phosphate removal efficiencies of the A2O and SSH reactors from 80.2% and 86.2% to 63.1% and 70.6%, respectively, while re-elevating the DO concentration to moderate levels significantly improved the phosphate removal efficiencies to 94.6% and 96.0%, respectively. Compared to the A2O reactor, the SSH reactor had more stable and better nutrient removal performance under different DO conditions, partly due to the additional carbon sources produced through the sludge fermentation in the side-stream reactor. The decrease in the DO concentration resulted in a decrease in the relative abundance of Acinetobacter but an increase in the relative abundance of Competibacter, potentially leading to the deterioration in phosphorus removal. Increasing nitrogen (N) deposition profoundly affects nutrient cycling in soil, thereby influencing forest ecosystem productivity and function. Soil microorganisms are integral in driving nutrient turnover; the changes in microbial communities in response to N deposition and the associated soil nutrient availability, especially of limited nutrients, are far from clear. To explore the changes in soil bacterial and fungal communities and their key environmental drivers under N deposition, we conducted a multilevel field N addition experiment in a Castanopsis carlesii natural forest. Soil properties and bacterial and fungal communities were investigated. There were no significant changes in alpha diversities (presented as Chao1 and Shannon's indexes) and beta diversities of bacteria and fungi among the three treatments. Consistently, the relative abundances of dominant bacterial phyla (i.e., Proteobacteria, Acidobacteria, Actinobacteria, Chloroflexi, and Planctomycetes) and fungal phyla (i.e., Basidiomycota, Ascomycota, and Rozellomycota) did not change following N addition. These results suggest that N deposition did not alter microbial community diversity and structure. In addition, the results of the Mantel test showed that soil pH, NO3−-N, dissolved organic N (DON), and total phosphorus (TP) predominantly influenced the community diversity and structure in bacteria, but not in fungi. Meanwhile, the relative abundance of some sensitive microbial genera, such as Bryobacter, Bradyrhizobium, Sorangium, and Archaeorhizomyces, were significantly decreased. These results indicate a decreased microbial ability for N fixation and P mobilization induced by N deposition. Moreover, there were significant relationships between Bryobacter, Bradyrhizobium, and Archaeorhizomyces and NO3−-N and available P (AP), suggesting that the responses of sensitive microbial groups to N deposition likely depend on the changes in available nutrients in soil, especially limited N or P. Collectively, 6 years of N addition had no significant influence on microbial communities, but some sensitive microbial groups were associated with N or P turnover. The continuous cropping can restrict the large scale and intensive cultivation of muskmelon, and the use of Trichoderma preparation to alleviate the negative effects is an effective mean. Although the impact on rhizosphere soil microbial communities and metabolites after applying Trichoderma are still unclear. In this study, we applied the fermentation broth of Trichoderma viride T23 to muskmelon under continuous cropping, collected rhizosphere soil samples at 60 days after transplantation, and investigated the changes in the microbial communities and metabolites of muskmelon by using high−throughput sequencing and metabolomic analysis, respectively. The results showed that T. viride T23 could effectively reduce the disease index of muskmelon wilt (65.86 to 18) and significantly increase the soil pH value (6.06 to 6.40). Trichoderma viride T23 induced drastic shifts in the richness, structure, and composition of rhizosphere microbial communities, and Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Actinobacteria were the dominant bacterial phyla. Bioactive substances such as scopoletin, erythronic acid, and palmitic acid were significantly upregulated in the rhizosphere soil, which enhanced soil activity. Overall, T. viride T23 resolves the continuous cropping limitation in muskmelon by improving soil physicochemical properties, elevating the biomass and diversity of soil microbial communities, and stimulating the production of soil active substances. Composting is an effective way to dispose of agricultural waste; however, its application is limited in the winter and in areas with low average annual temperatures. This study screened out a composite microbial agent (CMA) including Bacillus (B.) cereus QS7 and B. pumilus QM6 that could grow at 10–15 °C and investigated the effects of the CMA as an inoculant on the physicochemical parameters and microbial communities of compost made from mushroom residue mixed with sheep manure. The results showed that CMA inoculation prolonged the days of high temperature above 60 °C. When the ratio of mushroom residue to sheep manure was at 9:1, compost increased the accumulation of nitrogen, and reduced the electrical conductivity (EC). Under this ratio, the inoculation of CMA accelerated the degradation of organic matter (OM) (decreased by 12.22%) and total organic carbon (TOC) (decreased by 8.13%) and increased the germination rate and seed germination index (GI) to 100% and 106.86, respectively. Microbial community structure analysis showed that the relative abundance of Flavobacterium was 30.62% on day 15 and was higher after CMA inoculation in the high mushroom residue condition, which was higher than that of other groups, and the relative abundance of thermophilic fungi increased. This study demonstrated that CMA improves the quality and efficiency of mushroom residue and sheep manure composting, and it provides evidence to improve the efficiency of low-temperature composting. Garden waste compost (GWC) has been applied as an amendment to improve the desalination efficiency, nutrient availability and diversity of the microbial community in coastal saline soil. Understanding the response of the microbial community to garden waste compost application is of great significance in coastal ecological restoration. Four treatments were established: CK, nonamended control; T1, application of 68 kg·m−3 garden waste compost; T2, application of 15 kg·m−3 bentonite; and T3, a mixture of garden waste compost and bentonite. In addition, soil physicochemical properties, soil enzymes, microbial biomass carbon and the soil microbial community were measured. The results show that T3 had a more significant effect on increasing soil enzymes, as well as microbial biomass carbon and nitrogen, urease, sucrase and dehydrogenase activities. Based on the relative abundance, microbial diversity and linear discriminant effect size (LEfSe) analyses, the amendments can be seen to have increased the microbial abundance and alpha diversity of the bacterial structure and also altered the microbial community structure. RDA and Pearson correlation analysis at the phylum level indicated that available nitrogen, total porosity, hydraulic conductivity, bulk density and EC were the primary determinants of microbial communities associated with this amendment. In conclusion, the application of garden waste compost enables more microorganisms to participate in the soil material cycle, indicating that garden waste composting is beneficial to the restoration of coastal soils. Research on Fe3+ reduction coupled to anaerobic ammonium oxidation (Feammox) and its associated processes in the moderately low-dissolved oxygen (DO) urban natural environment is lacking. To clarify seasonal and spatial variations in Feammox, iron-reducing, and anaerobic ammonium oxidation (anammox) in urban green spaces, we examined the physicochemical indices and functional genes acd, acm, Geo, and hszA in topsoils and wetland soils across four seasons. Further, we performed 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. The Feammox-related gene acm was detected in all topsoil samples. Season and habitat affected soil physicochemical indices influencing gene distributions. Moisture content (45.3%) and Fe3+ (13.3%) mediated genetic changes. Competition between Feammox and iron-reducing bacteria (IRB) lowered the distributions of acd and acm in summer and increased these in winter. The acd and acm distributions were higher in wetland soil than in forestland soil. The dominant phyla, Nitrospirota, Actinobacteriota, and Desulfobacterota, correlated positively. Network analysis revealed that the relative abundances of acd, Geo, and hszA correlated positively with Flavobacterium and Thermomonas, Subgroup_2, and Candidatus_Solibacter, respectively. Feammox, iron-reducing, and anammox microorganisms correlated positively but competition existed between certain taxa. Candidatus, Sphingomonas, and Geobacter are linked to Feammox, iron reduction, and anammox. Here, we demonstrated the theoretical feasibility of developing Feammox-based nitrogen removal technology under moderately low-DO conditions, providing a reference for elucidating the ecological contribution of Feammox in an urban green heart. Surfactants are among the main chemical contaminants in greywater (GW) and can cause severe health issues in humans and aquatic organisms. We assessed the performance of a multistage constructed wetland system (EvaTAC) for GW treatment and capacity of the microbial community in linear alkyl benzene sulfonate (LAS) biodegradation. Physicochemical analyses were performed over 497 d, and biomass samples were collected for high-throughput DNA sequencing. The system was predominated by anaerobic conditions and received an average chemical oxygen demand (COD) and LAS of 374 and 32 mg·L−1, with removal rates of 66% and 43%, respectively. A positive correlation between COD and LAS suggested COD as a design parameter for LAS removal. We identified microbial genera participating in hydrolysis, fermentation, syntrophy, acetogenesis, methanogenesis, surfactant degradation, and sulphate reduction. Among the 15 surfactant-degrading genera, Pseudomonas was predominant. Community richness and diversity indices were comparable between subsystems, with a slight decrease in diversity observed towards the outlet. Among the LAS degraders, Rhodopseudomonas palustris had the highest relative abundance of operational taxonomic unit (OTU)s in all samples and the highest richness in the anaerobic chamber. The patterns in microbial community composition and environmental conditions suggest that LAS biodegradation occurred throughout the EvaTAC system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
