In this paper, we present a cascaded deep convolution neural network (CNN) for assessing enlarged perivascular space (ePVS) within the basal ganglia region using T2-weighted MRI. Enlarged perivascular spaces (ePVSs) are potential biomarkers for various neurodegenerative disorders, including dementia and Parkinson's disease. Accurate assessment of ePVS is crucial for early diagnosis and monitoring disease progression. Our approach first utilizes an ePVS enhancement CNN to improve ePVS visibility and then employs a quantification CNN to predict the number of ePVSs. The ePVS enhancement CNN selectively enhances the ePVS areas without the need for additional heuristic parameters, achieving a higher contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR) of 113.77 compared to Tophat, Clahe, and Laplacian-based enhancement algorithms. The subsequent ePVS quantification CNN was trained and validated using fourfold cross-validation on a dataset of 76 participants. The quantification CNN attained 88% accuracy at the image level and 94% accuracy at the subject level. These results demonstrate significant improvements over traditional algorithm-based methods, highlighting the robustness and reliability of our deep learning approach. The proposed cascaded deep CNN model not only enhances the visibility of ePVS but also provides accurate quantification, making it a promising tool for evaluating neurodegenerative disorders. Background: The Midfacial Skeletal Expander (MSE) produces a greater skeletal effect than its dentoalveolar side effects. The aim of this study was to quantify the stability of the different components of MSE expansion post-orthodontic treatment. Methods: Fourteen subjects (mean age of 20.4 ± 3.5 years) were treated with the MSE. The pre-expansion (T0), post-expansion (T1), and post-treatment (T2) CBCT records were superimposed and compared. The rotational fulcrum of the zygomaticomaxillary complex was identified, and angular measurements were generated to assess changes in the zygomaticomaxillary complex (skeletal expansion), dentoalveolar bone (alveolar bone bending), and maxillary first molars (dental tipping). The stability of all three components after orthodontic treatment was also assessed by comparing changes between T0–T1 and T0–T2. Results: Post-expansion, angular measurements showed that skeletal expansion accounted for 87.50% and 88.56% of total expansion, alveolar bone bending for 7.09% and 5.23%, and dental tipping for 5.41% and 6.21% on the right and left sides, respectively. Post-treatment skeletal expansion relapsed by 11.20% and 13.28% on the right and left sides, respectively. Conclusions: The MSE mainly produces skeletal changes with insignificant and negligible dentoalveolar changes immediately after expansion. Duodenal neuroendocrine tumors (NETs) are rare subepithelial tumors that arise from the neuroendocrine cells beneath the epithelial layer. However, an accurate histopathological diagnosis is difficult when tissue samples are obtained using conventional endoscopic forceps biopsy alone. This study aimed to evaluate the magnifying endoscopy with narrow-band imaging (ME-NBI) findings of duodenal NETs. We retrospectively analyzed a database of 22 duodenal NETs from 21 patients who underwent ME-NBI between January 2011 and June 2022. The ME-NBI, endosonographic, and histopathologic findings of duodenal NETs were analyzed. Nineteen lesions were located in the bulb, two were located in the superior duodenal angle, and one was located in the second portion of the duodenum. Eighteen lesions (82%) had IIa morphology, and nine (41%) had central depression on the surface. On endoscopic ultrasonography, almost all lesions (20/22, 91%) were located in the second and/or third layers, and the median tumor size was 6 mm. During ME-NBI, the microsurface pattern was regular in 18 lesions (82%) and absent in 4 (18%). The microvascular pattern was regular in 17 lesions (77%), irregular in 4 (18%), and absent in 1 (5%). Thickened subepithelial vessels were observed in 15 (68%) lesions. There was no difference in tumor size according to the presence or absence of thickened subepithelial vessels (6.1 ± 1.8 mm vs. 5.9 ± 3.8 mm, p = 0.860). In conclusion, the characteristic ME-NBI findings of duodenal NETs were regular microsurface and microvascular patterns and the presence of thickened subepithelial vessels. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of probiotic pretreatment on the alteration and recovery of gut microbiota after bowel preparation and its correlation with minor complications. This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot trial that included participants 40–65 years of age. Participants were randomly provided probiotics (active group) or placebo (placebo group) for 1 month before the colonoscopy and their feces collected. A total of 51 participants were included in the present study (26 in the active group and 25 in the placebo group). In the active group, the microbial diversity, evenness, and distribution were not significantly changed between before and after bowel preparation, but did change in the placebo group. The number of gut microbiota that decreased after bowel preparation in the active group was lower than in the placebo group. On the seventh day after colonoscopy, the gut microbiota in the active group was restored to almost the same level as before bowel preparation. In addition, we identified that several strains were assumed as key microbiota in early colonization and some taxa were increased only in the active group after bowel preparation. In multivariate analysis, taking probiotics before bowel preparation was identified as a significant factor for decreasing the duration of minor complications (odds ratio 0.13, 95% confidence interval 0.02–0.60, p = 0.027). Probiotic pretreatment had benefits on the alteration and recovery of gut microbiota and possible complications after bowel preparation. H2 permeation in peroxide-crosslinked EPDM blended with carbon black (CB) and silica fillers was studied at pressures ranging from 1.2 MPa to 90 MPa via the volumetric analysis technique. H2 uptake in the CB-filled EPDM revealed dual-sorption behaviors via Henry's law and the Langmuir model, which were attributed to H2 absorption by the polymer chains and H2 adsorption at the filler interfaces, respectively. Additionally, single-sorption mechanisms were observed for neat EPDM and silica-blended EPDM according to Henry's law, indicating H2 absorption by the polymer chain. The linear decreases in the diffusivity with filler content for the silica-blended EPDMs were attributed to increases in the diffusion paths caused by the filler. Exponential decreases in the diffusivity with increasing filler content and in the permeation with the physical/mechanical properties for CB-filled EPDMs were caused by decreases in the fractional free volume due to increased densities for the EPDM composites. Moreover, good filler-dependent correlations between permeability and density, hardness, and tensile strength were demonstrated for EPDMs used as sealing materials for O-rings. From the resulting equation, we predicted the permeation value without further measurements. We investigated the influence of two fillers—CB (carbon black) and silica—on the H2 permeation of EPDM polymers crosslinked with sulfur in the pressure ranges 1.2–90 MPa. H2 uptake in the CB-blended EPDM revealed dual sorption (Henry's law and Langmuir model) when exposed to pressure. This phenomenon indicates that H2 uptake is determined by the polymer chain and filler-surface absorption characteristics. Moreover, single sorption characteristics for neat and silica-blended EPDM specimens obey Henry's law, indicating that H2 uptake is dominated by polymer chain absorption. The pressure-dependent diffusivity for the CB-filled EPDM is explained by Knudsen and bulk diffusion, divided at the critical pressure region. The neat and silica-blended EPDM specimens revealed that bulk diffusion behaviors decrease with decreasing pressure. The H2 diffusivities in CB-filled EPDM composites decrease because the impermeable filler increases the tortuosity in the polymer and causes filler–polymer interactions; the linear decrease in diffusivity in silica-blended EPDM was attributed to an increase in the tortuosity. Good correlations of permeability with density and tensile strength were observed. From the investigated relationships, it is possible to select EPDM candidates with the lowest H2-permeation properties as seal materials to prevent gas leakage under high pressure in H2-refueling stations. Background: To assess the changes in the inclination of the premolar and molar during a maxillary expansion with a micro-implant-assisted skeletal expander (MSE). Materials and Methods: A total of 21 patients (16 females, 5 males) with a mean age of 18.6 ± 4.5 (range 11.3–26.3 years) with a transverse maxillary deficiency were included in this study. They all received an MSE appliance for the maxillary skeletal expansion. The activation protocol consisted of about 0.5 mm expansion a day until a diastema was observed and continued with about 0.25 mm a day until the desired transverse relationship between the maxilla and mandible was achieved. OnDemand3D software was used for the measurements of the inclination change in the maxillary premolars and molars, pre- and post-expansion. Graphpad was used to compare the mean change in each tooth with the zero value (no change), and the p values of these changes with every tooth were calculated. Moreover, the changes and the mean values of all the teeth on the left and right sides were calculated separately. Results: A total of sixteen measurements were conducted for each patient. The first premolars tipped palatally after the expansion, while the second premolars and molars tipped buccally. The changes were significant for the molars and the left second premolar. Conclusions: The MSE induced some changes in the tooth inclination. The first premolars moved palatally, most likely due to perioral musculature and mastication force, while the first and second molars moved buccally. The increasing use of photovoltaics (PVs) in distribution systems owing to the low-carbon policy has given rise to the need for various technological changes. In particular, the operation of on-load tap changers (OLTCs) has attracted attention. In traditional distribution systems, the OLTC operates via a line-drop compensator (LDC), which focuses on the load to solve the low-voltage problem; however, the problem of over-voltage caused by PVs persists. Currently, a method for operating an OLTC using the measured voltage is being researched; however, solving the voltage problem for several feeders connected to a main transformer (MT) is not viable. Therefore, this study proposes an OLTC operation method to address the feeder with the largest voltage problem depending on the direction of power flow. The proposed method selects a point where the OLTC operates using the difference between the measured and reference voltages. Setting the reference voltage can solve the problem that occurs due to the direction of power flow. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed method is verified via case studies. Exosomal miRNAs have been studied in various cancers as minimally invasive biomarkers. This study aimed to investigate the potential of exosomal microRNAs (miRNAs) as biomarkers for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC). Exosomes were isolated from cultures of esophageal epithelial cell and ESCC cell lines using ExoDisc, and exosomal miRNAs were detected via miRNA sequencing. Of the differentially expressed 14 miRNAs, the top 2 up-regulated miRNAs (miR-205-5p and miR-429) and top 2 down-regulated miRNAs (miR-375-3p and miR-483-3p) were selected as ESCC target miRNAs. Four selected exosomal miRNAs were validated in the plasma of 20 healthy controls (HCs) and 40 ESCC patients via quantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction. The expression of plasma exosomal miR-205-5p and miR-429 significantly increased, while that of plasma exosomal miR-375-3p was significantly reduced in ESCC patients compared to that in HCs. At cut-off values of 5.04, 2.564, and 0.136, the sensitivity and specificity for the diagnosis of ESCC were 72.5% and 70.0% for miR-205-5p, 60.0% and 60.0% for miR-429, and 65.0% and 65.0% for miR-375-3p, respectively. Based on the exosomal miRNAs identified in ESCC cell lines, our study demonstrated that plasma exosomal miR-205-5p, miR-429, and miR-375-3p could serve as potential biomarkers for ESCC diagnosis. Molar distalization has been a validated method to correct dental sagittal relationships and create space to relieve mild to moderate crowding. In the current case report, an adult female patient had a mild skeletal Class III relationship and dental Class III molar relationship. Four premolars and one lower incisor were extracted during the previous two rounds of orthodontic treatments, and the maxillary anterior teeth were left with severe proclination and root resorption. Limited by the available teeth, extraction was not an option for her. Thus, molar distalization with TADs was the best option used in the treatment to address her chief complaint. In addition, a proper bite opening was performed to eliminate occlusion trauma. Utilizing the mid-palatal TADs, the maxillary central incisors were retracted 7.9 mm and retroclined 33 degrees, and the molar distalization was achieved as much as 8 mm. The cross-section slices of CBCT images confirmed the proper retraction of maxillary incisors and well-positioned roots in the alveolar bone. Moreover, the root resorption was not worsened from the treatment. Clinically, the maxillary anterior teeth were preserved esthetically and functionally. This case report illustrates that with proper diagnosis and treatment mechanics, significant tooth movement can be achieved even on extremely proclined maxillary incisors with severe root resorption. We aimed to evaluate whether adding a sustained-release (SR) formula of mosapride to proton-pump inhibitors (PPIs) would be more effective in controlling symptoms than PPI alone in patients with gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). Sixty patients with heartburn and/or regurgitation were randomly assigned to two groups: mosapride SR 15 mg combined with esomeprazole 20 mg once daily (ME group) and esomeprazole 20 mg once daily alone (E group). The primary endpoint was the complete-resolution rate of GERD symptoms after eight-week medication, and the secondary endpoints were the complete-resolution rate of GERD symptoms after four-week medication, symptom-improvement rates ≥ 50% after four- and eight-week medication, and change in reflux-disease-questionnaire (RDQ) and GERD-health-related quality-of-life (GERD-HRQL) scores from baseline at four- and eight-week medication. No significant differences in complete-symptom-resolution rates at eight weeks and four weeks or in the changes in RDQ and GERD-HRQL scores from baseline at four- and eight-week medication were observed between the ME and E groups. The symptom-improvement rate of ≥50% after four and eight weeks was comparable between both groups. In this article, we propose a deep-learning-based estimation model for rating enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS) in the brain's basal ganglia region using T2-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images. The proposed method estimates the EPVS rating directly from the T2-weighted MRI without using either the detection or the segmentation of EVPS. The model uses the cropped basal ganglia region on the T2-weighted MRI. We formulated the rating of EPVS as a multi-class classification problem. Model performance was evaluated using 96 subjects' T2-weighted MRI data that were collected from two hospitals. Background and Aims: The clinical significance of circulating tumor cells (CTCs) and TWIST expression in CTCs remains unelucidated in patients with gastric cancer (GC). Here, we evaluated CTCs and TWIST expression in CTCs and explored their correlation with prognosis in patients with metastatic GC. Methods: Peripheral blood samples were prospectively obtained from 31 patients with metastatic GC between September 2017 and December 2018, prior to treatment. CTCs were detected using a centrifugal microfluidic system and CTCs positive for TWIST immunostaining were defined as TWIST (+) CTCs. Results: CTCs and TWIST (+) CTCs were detected in 25 (80.6%) and 24 (77.4%) of the 31 patients, respectively. CTC count in patients with first diagnosis of metastatic cancer tended to be higher than that in those with recurrent metastatic cancer, but TWIST (+) CTC count was not different between the two groups. There was no difference in CTC and TWIST (+) CTC counts according to histopathologic type, peritoneal dissemination, hematogenous metastasis, serum tumor makers, or response to first-line chemotherapy. Patients with CTCs > 7.5/7.5 mL of blood showed shorter overall survival (OS) than those with CTCs ≤ 7.5/7.5 mL of blood (p = 0.049). Additionally, patients with TWIST (+) CTCs > 2.5/7.5 mL of blood tended to show shorter OS than those with TWIST (+) CTCs ≤ 2.5/7.5 mL of blood (p = 0.105). Peat moss is an organic substance corroded by sphagnum moss and has a pH of 3.0–4.0. Elemental sulfur is sulfated and oxidized by the action of bacteria to become sulfuric acid. These biological factors can alter the soil environment. Blueberries require soil with a pH of 4.5–5.2 and high organic matter content. In this experiment, we investigated whether different treatment rates of peat moss, elemental sulfur, and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria affect changes in soil pH, physicochemical properties, and electrical conductivity. We detected strong changes in soil pH as a reaction to the supply of peat moss, elemental sulfur, and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria. The pH of the soil when peat moss and elemental sulfur each were supplied was reduced. In addition, the pH decreased faster when elemental sulfur and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were supplied together than elemental sulfur alone, satisfying an acidic soil environment suitable for blueberry cultivation. In this experiment, it is shown that peat moss, elemental sulfur, and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria are suitable for lowering soil pH. It was demonstrated that when elemental sulfur and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria were treated together, the pH decreased faster than when treated with peat moss. It could be economically beneficial to farmers to use elemental sulfur and sulfur-oxidizing bacteria, which are cheaper than peat moss, to reduce the pH of the soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The role of the blood–brain barrier (BBB) breakdown has been recognized as being important in Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis. We aimed to evaluate whether regional BBB integrity differed according to sex and whether differences in BBB integrity changed as a consequence of aging or cognitive decline, using dynamic contrast-enhanced (DCE)-magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). In total, 75 participants with normal cognition (NC) or mild cognitive impairment (MCI) underwent cognitive assessments and MRI examination including DCE-MRI. Regional Ktrans was calculated in cortical regions and the Patlak permeability model was used to calculate BBB permeability (Ktrans, min−1). Females had a lower median Ktrans in the cingulate and occipital cortices. In the "older old" group, sex differences in Ktrans were only observed in the occipital cortex. In the MCI group, sex differences in Ktrans were only observed in the occipital cortex. Age was the only predictor of cognitive assessment scores in the male MCI group; however, educational years and Ktrans in the occipital cortex could predict cognitive scores in the female MCI group. Our study revealed that females may have better BBB integrity in cingulate and occipital cortices. Objectives: The incidence of Crohn's disease and the number of associated surgeries are increasing in Korea. This study investigated the effect of azathioprine/6-mercaptopurine (6-MP) and TNF-α antagonists on abdominal and perianal surgery in Korean patients with Crohn's disease. Design: A retrospective cohort study. Setting: Data from the Crohn's Disease Clinical Network and Cohort (CONNECT) were used. Patients with confirmed Crohn's disease between 1982 and 2008 from 32 hospitals in the Republic of Korea were enrolled. The effect of azathioprine/6-MP on abdominal and perianal surgery was analysed using logistic regression analysis adjusting for age and sex. Participants: In total, 1161 Crohn's disease patients were included in the Republic of Korea in the surgery (n = 462, male = 339, female = 123) and control groups (n = 699, male = 484, female = 215). Results: In total, 1161 patients were selected, with 462 patients who underwent abdominal (n = 245) or perianal surgery (n = 217). The preoperative usage rates of azathioprine/6-MP were 18.8% and 65.1% (p < 0.0001) in the surgery and control groups, respectively. The preoperative usage rates of TNF-α antagonists were 7.1% and 23.3% (p < 0.0001) in the surgery and control groups, respectively. A multivariate analysis revealed that the preoperative use of azathioprine/6-MP had an odds ratio of 0.094 for all surgeries (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.070–0.127, p < 0.0001), 0.131 for abdominal surgery (95% CI: 397–1.599, p < 0.0001), and 0.059 for perianal surgery (95% CI: 0.038–0.091, p < 0.0001). The preoperative use of TNF-α antagonists had an odds ratio of 0.225 for all surgeries (95% CI: 0.151–0.335, p < 0.0001), 0.403 for abdominal surgery (95% CI: 0.261–0.623, p < 0.0001), and 0.064 for perianal surgery (95% CI: 0.026–0.160, p < 0.001). Strengths of this study: The study presents new evidence of the reduced risk of surgery following azathioprine use in Crohn's disease patients. Limitations of this study (1) This was not a controlled prospective study. (2) There was a selection bias specific to the CONNECT cohort. We investigated the effects of the addition of Co and carbon on the deformation behavior of new medium-entropy alloys (MEAs) designed by increasing the entropy of the conventional NiCrFe-type Alloy 600. The strength/ductility combination of carbon-free (NiCo)75Cr17Fe8 MEA was found to be 729 MPa/81% at 298 K and it increased to a remarkable 1212 MPa/106% at 77 K. The excellent strength and ductility of (NiCo)75Cr17Fe8 at cryogenic temperature is attributed to the increased strain hardening rate caused by the interaction between dislocation slip and deformation twins. Strength/ductility combinations of carbon-doped (NiCo)75Cr17Fe8C0.34 and (NiCo)75Cr17Fe8C0.83 at cryogenic temperature were observed to be 1321 MPa/96% and 1398 MPa/66%, respectively, both of which are superior to those of other high-entropy alloys (HEAs). Strength/ductility combinations of (NiCo)75Cr17Fe8C0.34 and (NiCo)75Cr17Fe8C0.83 at room temperature were found to be 831 MPa/72% and 942 MPa/55%, respectively and both are far superior to 676 MPa/41% of the commercial Alloy 600. Yield strengths of carbon-free and carbon-doped alloys comprised strengthening components from the friction stress, grain size strengthening, carbide strengthening and interstitial strengthening and excellent agreement between the predictions and the experiments was obtained. A design strategy to develop new MEAs by increasing the entropy of the conventional alloys was found to be effective in enhancing the mechanical performance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims: Endoscopic ultrasonography (EUS) is a useful diagnostic modality for evaluating gastric mesenchymal tumors; however, differentiating gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) from benign mesenchymal tumors such as leiomyomas and schwannomas remains challenging. For this reason, we developed a convolutional neural network computer-aided diagnosis (CNN-CAD) system that can analyze gastric mesenchymal tumors on EUS images. Methods: A total of 905 EUS images of gastric mesenchymal tumors (pathologically confirmed GIST, leiomyoma, and schwannoma) were used as a training dataset. Validation was performed using 212 EUS images of gastric mesenchymal tumors. This test dataset was interpreted by three experienced and three junior endoscopists. Results: The sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of the CNN-CAD system for differentiating GISTs from non-GIST tumors were 83.0%, 75.5%, and 79.2%, respectively. Its diagnostic specificity and accuracy were significantly higher than those of two experienced and one junior endoscopists. In the further sequential analysis to differentiate leiomyoma from schwannoma in non-GIST tumors, the final diagnostic accuracy of the CNN-CAD system was 75.5%, which was significantly higher than that of two experienced and one junior endoscopists. Conclusions: Our CNN-CAD system showed high accuracy in diagnosing gastric mesenchymal tumors on EUS images. Cancer is a leading cause of the death worldwide. Since the National Cancer Act in 1971, various cancer treatments were developed including chemotherapy, surgery, radiation therapy and so forth. However, sequela of such cancer therapies and cachexia are problem to the patients. The primary mechanism of cancer sequela and cachexia is closely related to reactive oxygen species (ROS) and inflammation. As antioxidant properties of numerous plant extracts have been widely reported, plant-derived drugs may have efficacy on managing the sequela and cachexia. In this study, recent seventy-four studies regarding plant extracts showing ability to manage the sequela and cachexia were reviewed. Some plant-derived antioxidants inhibited cancer proliferation and inflammation after surgery and others prevented chemotherapy-induced normal cell apoptosis. Cachexia was also alleviated by inhibition of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), interleukin-6 (IL-6) and monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (MCP-1) by plant extracts. Background and Aims: Endoscopic resection (ER) for submucosal invasive colorectal cancer (T1 CRC) can be grouped as curative ER (C-ER) and non-curative ER (NC-ER). Little is known about the long-term outcomes of patients in these two groups. Therefore, we have evaluated the long-term outcomes in endoscopically resected T1 CRC patients in C-ER and NC-ER groups. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study on 220 patients with T1 CRC treated with ER from January 2007 to December 2017. First, we investigated the long-term outcomes (5-year overall survival [OS] and recurrence-free survival [RFS]) in the C-ER group (n = 49). In the NC-ER group (n = 171), we compared long-term outcomes between patients who underwent additional surgical resection (ASR) (n = 117) and those who did not (surveillance-only, n = 54). Results: T1 CRC patients in the C-ER and NC-ER groups had a median follow-up of 44 (interquartile range 32–69) months. There was no risk of tumor recurrence and cancer-related deaths in patients with C-ER. In the NC-ER group, the 5-year OS rates were 75.3% and 92.6% in the surveillance-only and ASR subgroups, respectively. The hazard ratio (HR) for ASR in NC-ER vs. surveillance-only in NC-ER was statistically insignificant. However, RFS rates were significantly different between the ASR (97.2%) and surveillance-only (84.0%) subgroups. Multivariate analysis indicated a submucosal invasion depth (SID) of >2500 µm and margin positivity to be associated with recurrence. Conclusions: The surveillance-only approach can be considered as an alternative surgical option for T1 CRCs in selected patients undergoing NC-ER. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study, the effect of heat treatment on the fracture behavior of alloy B steel with boron (B) contents as high as 130 ppm was investigated. The Alloy B are derived from Gr.92 steel with outstanding creep characteristics. The amounts of minor alloying elements such as B, N, Nb, Ta, and C were optimized to achieve better mechanical properties at high temperatures. Hence, workability of the alloy B and Gr.92 were compared. An increase in the B content affected the phase transformation temperature and texture of the steel. The development of the {111} components in γ-fibers depended on the austenite fraction of the steel after the phase transformation. An increase in the B content of the steel increased its α-to-γ phase transformation temperature, thus preventing the occurrence of sufficient transformation under the normalizing condition. Cracks occurred at the point of the elastic-to-plastic deformation transition in the normal direction during the rolling process, thereby resulting in failure. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid intermediate heat treatment conditions, in which γ-fibers do not fully develop, i.e., to avoid an imperfect normalization. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The (1−x)(Na1/2Bi1/2)TiO3-xSrTiO3 (NBT-100xST) system is a possible lead-free candidate for actuator applications because of its excellent strain vs. electric field behaviour. Use of single crystals instead of polycrystalline ceramics may lead to further improvement in piezoelectric properties but work on single crystal growth in this system is limited. In particular, the effect of composition on single crystal growth has yet to be studied. In this work, single crystals of (NBT-100xST) with x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10 and 0.20 were grown using the method of Solid State Crystal Growth. [001]-oriented SrTiO3 single crystal seeds were embedded in (NBT-100xST) ceramic powder, which was then pressed to form pellets and sintered at 1200 °C for 5 min–50 h. Single crystal growth rate, matrix grain growth rate and sample microstructure were examined using scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The results indicate that the highest single crystal growth rate was obtained at x = 0.20. We investigated the influence of two fillers-CB (carbon black) and silica-on the H 2 permeation of EPDM polymers crosslinked with sulfur in the pressure ranges 1.2-90 MPa. H 2 uptake in the CB-blended EPDM revealed dual sorption (Henry's law and Langmuir model) when exposed to pressure. This phenomenon indicates that H 2 uptake is determined by the polymer chain and filler-surface absorption characteristics. Moreover, single sorption characteristics for neat and silica-blended EPDM specimens obey Henry's law, indicating that H 2 uptake is dominated by polymer chain absorption. The pressure-dependent diffusivity for the CB-filled EPDM is explained by Knudsen and bulk diffusion, divided at the critical pressure region. The neat and silica-blended EPDM specimens revealed that bulk diffusion behaviors decrease with decreasing pressure. The H 2 diffusivities in CB-filled EPDM composites decrease because the impermeable filler increases the tortuosity in the polymer and causes filler-polymer interactions; the linear decrease in diffusivity in silica-blended EPDM was attributed to an increase in the tortuosity. Good correlations of permeability with density and tensile strength were observed. From the investigated relationships, it is possible to select EPDM candidates with the lowest H 2 -permeation properties as seal materials to prevent gas leakage under high pressure in H 2 -refueling stations.
