Reduced iodine loads for computed tomography (CT)-based vascular assessment prior to transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) may be feasible in conjunction with a spectral detector CT scanner. This prospective single-center study considered 100 consecutive patients clinically referred for pre-TAVI CT. They were examined on a dual-layer detector CT scanner to obtain an ECG-gated cardiac scan and a non-ECG-gated aortoiliofemoral scan. Either a standard contrast media (SCM) protocol using 80 mL Iohexol 350 mgI/mL (iodine load: 28 gI) or a body-mass-index adjusted reduced contrast media (RCM) protocol using 40–70 mL Iohexol 350 mgI/mL (iodine load: 14–24.5 gI) were employed. Conventional images and virtual monoenergetic images at 40–80 keV were reconstructed. A threshold of 250 HU was set for sufficient attenuation along the arterial access pathway. A qualitative assessment used a five-point Likert scale. Sufficient attenuation in the thoracic aorta was observed for all patients in both groups using conventional images. In the abdominal, iliac, and femoral segments, sufficient attenuation was observed for the majority of patients when using virtual monoenergetic images (SCM: 96–100% of patients, RCM: 88–94%) without statistical difference between both groups. Segments with attenuation measurements below the threshold remained qualitatively assessable as well. Likert scores were 'excellent' for virtual monoenergetic images 50 keV and 55 keV in both groups (RCM: 1.2–1.4, SCM: 1.2–1.3). With diagnostic image quality maintained, it can be concluded that reduced iodine loads of 14–24.5 gI are feasible for pre-TAVI vascular assessment on a spectral detector CT scanner. Accurate and fast breath monitoring is of great importance for various healthcare applications, for example, medical diagnoses, studying sleep apnea, and early detection of physiological disorders. Devices meant for such applications tend to be uncomfortable for the subject (patient) and pricey. Therefore, there is a need for a cost-effective, lightweight, small-dimensional, and non-invasive device whose presence does not interfere with the observed signals. This paper reports on the fabrication of a highly sensitive human respiratory sensor based on silicon nanowires (SiNWs) fabricated by a top-down method of metal-assisted chemical-etching (MACE). Besides other important factors, reducing the final cost of the sensor is of paramount importance. One of the factors that increases the final price of the sensors is using gold (Au) electrodes. Herein, we investigate the sensor's response using aluminum (Al) electrodes as a cost-effective alternative, considering the fact that the electrode's work function is crucial in electronic device design, impacting device electronic properties and electron transport efficiency at the electrode–semiconductor interface. Therefore a comparison is made between SiNWs breath sensors made from both p-type and n-type silicon to investigate the effect of the dopant and electrode type on the SiNWs respiratory sensing functionality. A distinct directional variation was observed in the sample's response with Au and Al electrodes. Finally, performing a qualitative study revealed that the electrical resistance across the SiNWs renders greater sensitivity to breath than to dry air pressure. No definitive research demonstrating the mechanism behind these effects exists, thus prompting our study to investigate the underlying process. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the present study, the thermal conductivity of two distinct water-based nanofluids of single-walled CNTs and Al2O3, as well as their hybrid solution, was investigated experimentally. The Al2O3 and CNTs nanoparticle concentrations are taken to be 2%v/v, while the hybrid solution contained 2%v/v of both Al2O3 and CNTs nanoparticles. A PSS (Polly styrene sulphonic acid) solution was used as a surfactant to increase the suspension time of the nanoparticles to avoid sedimentation. The dispersion and breaking of the particles of CNT and Al2O3 into nano size were performed employing a probe sonicator and bath sonicator. Moreover, a hot plate magnetic stirrer was used to obtain a consistent liquid mixture. The experiments are performed on the Computer Controlled Thermal Conductivity of Liquid and Gases (TCLGC) unit available in the heat transfer lab at GIKI. The results concluded that the thermal conductivity of water-based single-walled CNT nanofluids was higher compared to Al2O3 and their hybrid solution. Therefore, Al2O3 and a hybrid solution are less desirable for thermal conduction compared to CNTs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The aim of this paper is to evaluate the diagnostic image quality of spectral dual-source photon-counting detector coronary computed tomography angiography (PCD-CCTA) for coronary artery disease in a multicenter study. The image quality (IQ), assessability, contrast-to-noise ratio (CNR), Agatston score, and radiation exposure were measured. Stenoses were quantified and compared with invasive coronary angiography, if available. A total of 92 subjects (65% male, age 58 ± 14 years) were analyzed. The prevalence of significant coronary artery disease (CAD) (stenosis ≥ 50%) was 17% of all patients, the range of the Agatston score was 0–2965 (interquartile range (IQR) 0–135). The IQ was very good (one, IQR one–two), the CNR was very high (20 ± 10), and 5% of the segments were rated non-diagnostic. The IQ and assessability were higher in proximal coronary segments (p < 0.001). Agatston scores up to 600 did not significantly affect the assessability of the coronary segments (p = 0.3). Heart rate influenced assessability only at a high-pitch mode (p = 0.009). For the invasive coronary angiography (ICA) subgroup (n = nine), the diagnostic performance for CAD per segment was high (sensitivity 92%, specificity 96%), although the limited number of patients who underwent both diagnostic modalities limits the generalization of this finding at this stage. Silicon nanowires (SiNWs) are known to exhibit a large piezoresistance (PZR) effect, making them suitable for various sensing applications. Here, we report the results of a PZR investigation on randomly distributed and interconnected vertical silicon nanowire arrays as a pressure sensor. The samples were produced from p-type (100) Si wafers using a silver catalyzed top-down etching process. The piezoresistance response of these SiNW arrays was analyzed by measuring their I-V characteristics under applied uniaxial as well as isostatic pressure. The interconnected SiNWs exhibit increased mechanical stability in comparison with separated or periodic nanowires. The repeatability of the fabrication process and statistical distribution of measurements were also tested on several samples from different batches. A sensing resolution down to roughly 1 m pressure was observed with uniaxial force application, and more than two orders of magnitude resistance variation were determined for isostatic pressure below atmospheric pressure. The assessment of moisture loss from meat during the aging period is a critical issue for the meat industry. In this article, a non-invasive microwave ring-resonator sensor is presented to evaluate the moisture content, or more precisely water holding capacity (WHC) of broiler meat over a four-week period. The developed sensor has shown significant changes in its resonance frequency and return loss due to reduction in WHC in the studied duration. The obtained results are also confirmed by physical measurements. Further, these results are evaluated using the Fricke model, which provides a good fit for electric circuit components in biological tissue. Significant changes were observed in membrane integrity, where the corresponding capacitance decreases 30% in the early aging (0D-7D) period. Similarly, the losses associated with intracellular and extracellular fluids exhibit changed up to 42% and 53%, respectively. Ultimately, empirical polynomial models are developed to predict the electrical component values for a better understanding of aging effects. 2,4-Dimethylbenzoylhydrazones 1-30 were synthesized by condensation reactions of 2,4-dimethylbenzoylhydrazide with various aromatic aldehydes and characterized. The assigned structures of compounds 10, 15 and 22 were further supported by single-crystal X-ray diffraction data. The synthesized compounds were evaluated for their in vitro DPPH radical scavenging activity. They exerted varying degree of scavenging activity toward DPPH radical with IC50 values between 25.6-190 μM. Compounds 1, 4, 2, 3, 7, and 6 have IC50 values of 25.6, 28.1, 29.3, 29.8, 30.0 and 30.1 μM respectively, showing better activity than an n-propyl gallate standard (IC50 value = 30.30 μM). For super oxide anion scavenging activity compounds 1, 2 and 3 with IC50 values of 98.3, 102.6, and 105.6, respectively, also showed better activity than the n-propyl gallate standard (IC50 value = 106.34 μM). Microbial fuel cell, as a promising technology for simultaneous power production and waste treatment, has received a great deal of attention in recent years; however, generation of a relatively low power density is the main limitation towards its commercial application. This study contributes toward the optimization, in terms of maximization, of the power density of a microbial fuel cell by employing response surface methodology, coupled with central composite design. For this optimization study, the interactive effect of three independent parameters, namely (i) acetate concentration in the influent of anodic chamber; (ii) fuel feed flow rate in anodic chamber; and (iii) oxygen concentration in the influent of cathodic chamber, have been analyzed for a two-chamber microbial fuel cell, and the optimum conditions have been identified. The optimum value of power density was observed at an acetate concentration, a fuel feed flow rate, and an oxygen concentration value of 2.60 mol m−3, 0.0 m3, and 1.00 mol m−3, respectively. The results show the achievement of a power density of 3.425 W m−2, which is significant considering the available literature. Additionally, a statistical model has also been developed that correlates the three independent factors to the power density. For this model, R2, adjusted R2, and predicted R2 were 0.839, 0.807, and 0.703, respectively. Terrestrial gamma ray flashes (TGF) are intense and prompt bursts of X- and gamma-rays of up to 100 MeV of energy. Typically associated with thunderstorm activity, TGFs are produced by bremsstrahlung effects of electrons accelerated in strong electric fields generated by lightning. TGFs can be effectively targeted by gamma detectors with enhanced time stamping capabilities onboard of satellites operating at near-Earth low obits (LEO). Light-1 is a miniature satellite, a 3U CubeSat designed to detect, monitor and study terrestrial gamma ray flashes in low Earth orbit. The two payload detectors are composed of a photomultiplier tube and silicon photomultipliers. The two detectors are mounted at two ends of the CubeSat and the proposed orientation of the CubeSat will ensure maximum TGF detection probability. To allow an increased frequency of data downlink, Khalifa University has collaborated with NanoAvionics Corp, and hence Light-1 has access to three ground stations situated across the map, Abu Dhabi in United Arab Emirates, Vilnius in Lithuania, and Aalborg in Denmark. The satellite expected to launch in late-2021 is currently in its assembly and integration phase. Consumer electronics manufacturers have been incorporating support for 4G/5G communication technologies into many electronic devices. Thus, highly capable Internet of Things (IoT)-ready versions of electronic devices are being purchased which will eventually replace traditional consumer electronics. With the goal of creating a smart environment, the IoT devices enable data sharing, sensing, awareness, increased control. Enabled by high-speed networks, the IoT devices function in a group setting thus compounding the attack surface leading to security and privacy concerns. This research is a study on the possibility of incorporating PUF as a basis for group key generation. The challenge here lies in identifying device features that are unique, stable, reproducible and unpredictable by an adversary. Each device generates its own identity leading to collaborative cryptographic key generation in a group setting. The research uses a comprehensive hardware testbed to demonstrate the viability of PUFs for the generation of a symmetric key through collaboration. Detailed analysis of the proposed setup and the symmetric key generation scheme has shown that the system is scalable and offers unrivalled advantages compared to conventional cryptographic implementations.
