Continuously reinforced thermoplastic composites are widely used in structural applications due to their toughness, light weight, and shorter process cycle. Moreover, they provide flexibility in design and material selection. Unlike thermoset composites, continuous fiber content to maximize mechanical properties in thermoplastic composites has not been well investigated. In this paper, three thermoplastic systems are investigated to study the optimum content of continuous fiber reinforcement. These systems include carbon fiber/polyphenylene sulfide (PPS), glass fiber/PPS, and glass fiber/high-density polyethylene (HDPE). Tapes were made at several fiber contents, and samples were compression molded and tested using thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile, 3-point flexure, and short-beam shear tests. Results revealed that higher fiber content led to an increase in the glass transition and melt transition temperatures of the polymer. Some mechanical properties increased with fiber content and then began to decrease upon further addition of fibers, while other properties, such as ductility and interfacial bond strength, decreased with more reinforcement. As sensor materials for structural health monitoring (SHM, a nondestructive test for the continuous evaluation of the conditions of individual structural components and entire assemblies), magnetostrictive materials, piezoelectric materials, and optical fibers have attracted significant interest. In this study, the mode I interlaminar fracture load and crack self-detection potential of glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP)–embedded magnetostrictive Fe–Co fibers were investigated via double cantilever beam testing. The results indicated that by controlling the amount of Fe–Co fibers introduced into GFRP, the number of Fe–Co fibers could be reduced without compromising the performance of GFRP. Furthermore, the magnetic flux density increased significantly with crack propagation, indicating that the magnetic flux density change could determine crack propagation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Standard Digital Volume Correlation (DVC) approaches enable quantitative analyses of specimen deformation to be performed by measuring displacement fields between discrete states. Such frameworks are thus limited by the number of scans (due to acquisition duration). Considering only one projection per loading step, Projection-based Digital Volume Correlation (P-DVC) allows 4D (i.e., space and time) full-field measurements to be carried out over entire loading histories. The sought displacement field is decomposed over a basis of separated variables, namely, temporal and spatial modes. In the present work, the spatial modes are constructed via scan-wise DVC, and only the temporal amplitudes are sought via P-DVC. The proposed method is applied to a glass fiber mat reinforced polymer specimen containing a machined notch, subjected to in situ cyclic tension and imaged via X-ray Computed Tomography. The work is focused on the mechanical behavior description of porous filled composites that is not based on simulations or exact physical models, including different assumptions and simplifications with further comparison with real behavior of materials with different extents of accordance. The proposed process begins by measurement and further fitting of data by spatial exponential function zc = zm · p1b · p2c, where zc/zm is mechanical property value for composite/nonporous matrix, p1/p2 are suitable dimensionless structural parameters (equal to 1 for nonporous matrix) and b/c are exponents ensuring the best fitting. The fitting is followed by interpolation of b and c, which are logarithmic variables based on the observed mechanical property value of nonporous matrix with additions of further properties of matrix in some cases. The work is dedicated to the utilization of further suitable pairs of structural parameters to one pair published earlier. The proposed mathematical approach was demonstrated for PUR/rubber composites with a wide range of rubber filling, various porosity, and different polyurethane matrices. The mechanical properties derived from tensile testing included elastic modulus, ultimate strength and strain, and energy need for ultimate strain achievement. The proposed relationships between structure/composition and mechanical behavior seem to be suitable for materials containing randomly shaped filler particles and voids and, therefore, could be universal (and also hold materials with less complicated microstructure) after potential following and more exact research. This work presents the results of a tribological examination of polymer matrix composites reinforced with carbon foams with different porosity. The application of open-celled carbon foams allows an easy infiltration process by liquid epoxy resin. At the same time, carbon reinforcement remains its initial structure, which prevents its segregation in polymer matrix. Dry friction tests, conducted under 0.7, 2.1, 3.5 and 5.0 MPa loads, show that higher friction load results in higher mass loss, but it strongly lowers the coefficient of friction (COF). The change in coefficient of friction is related to the size of the pores of the carbon foam. Open-celled foams with pores size below 0.6 mm (40 and 60 ppi), used as a reinforcement in epoxy matrix, allow to obtain COF twice lower than composite reinforced with 20 ppi open-celled foam. This phenomenon occurs due to a change of friction mechanisms. In composites reinforced with open-celled foams, general wear mechanism is related to destruction of carbon components, which results in solid tribofilm formation. The application of novel reinforcement, in the form of open-celled foams with stable distance between carbon components, allows the decrease of COF and the improvement of stability, even under a very high friction load. With recent developments in conductive composites, new possibilities emerged for 3D printed conductive structures. Complementary to a vast number of publications on materials properties, here we investigate the influence of printing parameters on the resistance of 3D printed structures. The influence of printing temperature on the resistance is significant, with too low value (210 °C) leading to nozzle clogging, while increasing the temperature by 20 °C above the recommended printing settings decreases resistivity by 15%, but causing degradation of the polymer matrix. The limitations of the FDM technique, related to the dimension accuracy emerging from the layer-by-layer printing approach, greatly influence the samples' cross-section, causing irregular resistivity values for different layer heights. For samples with layer thickness lower than 0.2 mm, regardless of the nozzle diameter (0.5–1 mm), high resistance is attributed to the quality of samples. But for a 1 mm nozzle, we observe stabilized values or resistance for 0.3 to 1 mm layer height. Comparing resistance values and layer height generated from the slicer software, we observe a direct correlation—for a larger height of the sample resistance value decrease. Presented modifications in printing parameters can affect the final resistance by 50%. The sol-gel process was used to create a new type of polypyrrole-Stannous(II)tungstate nanocomposite by poly(N-methyl pyrrole (PNMPy) sol in Stannous(II)tungstate gel, produced separately using sodium silicotungstic acid and Tn(II)chloride. Tin(II)tungstate (SnWO3) was made by changing the mixing volume ratios of SnWO3 and with a constant amount of an organic polymer. The composite was characterized by TGA, XRD, FTIR, and SEM measurements. A commercially available glassy carbon electrode (GCE) was modified with PNMPy/nano-Stannous(II)WO3 nanocomposites to create a chemical sensor for selective detection of Hg2+ ions using an effective electrochemical methodology. In the I-V technique, selectively toxic Hg2+ ion was targeted selectively, which shows a rapid reaction toward PNMPy/nano-Stannous(II)WO3/Nafion/GCE sensor. It also demonstrates long-term stability, an ultra-low detection limit, exceptional sensitivity, and excellent reproducibility and repeatability. For 0.1 mM to 1.0 nM aqueous Hg2+ ion solution, a linear calibration plot (r2: 0.9993) was achieved, with a suitable sensitivity value of 2.8241 AM−1 cm−2 and an extraordinarily low detection limit (LOD) of 3.40.1 pM (S/N = 3). The following paper presents a simple, low-cost, and repeatable manufacturing process for fabricating conductive, elastic carbon-elastomer nanocomposite fibers for applications in the textile industry and beyond. The presented method allows for the manufacturing of fibers with a diameter of 0.2 mm, containing up to 50 vol. % of graphite powder, 10 vol. % of CNT, and a mix of both fillers. As a result, resistivity below 0.2 Ωm for the 0.2 mm-diameter fibers was achieved. Additionally, conductive fibers are highly elastic, which makes them suitable for use in the textile industry as an element of circuits. The effect of strain on the change in resistance was also tested. Researches have shown that highly conductive fibers can withstand strain of up to 40%, with resistivity increasing nearly five times compared to the unstretched fiber. This research shows that the developed composites can also be used as strain sensors in textronic systems. Finally, functional demonstrators were made by directly sewing the developed fibers into a cotton fabric. In this publication, we describe the process of fabrication and the analysis of the properties of nanocomposite filaments based on carbon nanotubes and acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS) polymer for fused deposition modeling (FDM) additive manufacturing. Polymer granulate was mixed and extruded with a filling fraction of 0.99, 1.96, 4.76, 9.09 wt.% of CNTs (carbon nanotubes) to fabricate composite filaments with a diameter of 1.75 mm. Detailed mechanical and electrical investigations of printed test samples were performed. The results demonstrate that CNT content has a significant influence on mechanical properties and electrical conductivity of printed samples. Printed samples obtained from high CNT content composites exhibited an improvement in the tensile strength by 12.6%. Measurements of nanocomposites' electrical properties exhibited non-linear relation between the supply voltage and measured sample resistivity. This effect can be attributed to the semiconductor nature of the CNT functional phase and the occurrence of a tunnelling effect in percolation network. Detailed I–V characteristics related to the amount of CNTs in the composite and the supply voltage influence are also presented. At a constant voltage value, the average resistivity of the printed elements is 2.5 Ωm for 4.76 wt.% CNT and 0.15 Ωm for 9.09 wt.% CNT, respectively. These results demonstrate that ABS/CNT composites are a promising functional material for FDM additive fabrication of structural elements, but also structural electronics and sensors. Ternary composites of flexible thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU), lead zirconate titanate (PZT), and multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with very high dielectric permittivity ("r) and low dielectric loss (tan δ) are reported. To assess the evolution of dielectric properties with the interactions between conductive and dielectric fillers, composites were designed with a range of content for PZT (0-30 vol%) and MWCNT (0-1 vol%). The microstructure was composed of PZT-rich and segregated MWCNT-rich regions, which could effectively prevent the formation of macroscopic MWCNT conductive networks and thus reduce the high ohmic loss. Therefore, εr/ increased by a maximum of tenfold, reaching up to 166 by the addition of up to 1 vol% MWCNT to TPU/PZT. More importantly, tan δ remained relatively unchanged at 0.06-0.08, a similar range to that of pure TPU. εr/tan δ ratio reached 2870 at TPU/30 vol% PZT/0.5 vol% MWCNT, exceeding most of the reported values. In this paper, we investigated the thermodynamics of the resin curing process, when it was a part of composition with graphite powder and cut carbon fibers, to precisely determine the time and temperature of gelation. The material for the research is a set of commercial epoxy resins with a gelation time not exceeding 100 min. The curing process was characterized for the neat resins and for resins with 10% by weight of flake graphite and cut carbon fibers. The results recorded in the analysis of temperature derivative (ATD) method unequivocally showed that the largest first derivative registered during the test is the gel point of the resin. The innovative approach to measuring the gelation time of resins facilitates the measurements while ensuring the stability of the curing process compared to the normative tests that introduce mechanical interaction. In addition, it was found during the research that the introduction of 10% by weight of carbon particles in the form of graphite and cut carbon fibers rather shortens the gelation time and lowers the temperature peak due to the effective absorption and storage of heat from the cross-linking system. In this paper, we investigated theimpact of glassy carbon (GC) reinforcement oncrystal structure and the mechanical performance of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). We made composite samples by mixing HDPE granules with powder in ethanol followed bymelt mixing in a laboratory extruder. Along with the investigated composite, we also prepared samples with carbon nanotubes (CNT), graphene (GNP) and graphite (Gr) to compare GC impact with already used carbon fillers. To evaluate crystal structure and crystallinity, we used X-ray diffraction (XRD) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). We supported the XRD results with a residual stress analysis (RSA) according to the EN15305 standard. Analysis showed that reinforcing with GC leads to significant crystallite size reduction and low residual stress values. We evaluated the mechanical properties of composites with hardness and tensile testing. The addition of glassy carbon results inincreased mechanical strength incomposites with CNT and GNP. The health monitoring of structures is of great interest in order to check components' structural life and monitor damages during operation. Self-monitoring materials can provide both the structural and monitoring functionality in one component and exploit their piezoresistive behavior, namely, the variation of electrical resistivity with an applied mechanical strain. In this work, self-monitoring plies were developed to be inserted into glass-fiber reinforced epoxy-based laminates in order to achieve structural monitoring. Nanocomposite epoxy-based resins were developed employing different contents of high surface area carbon black (CB, 6 wt%) and multiwall carbon nanotubes (MWCNT, 0.75 and 1 wt%), and rheologically and thermomechanically characterized. Self-monitoring plies were manufactured by impregnating glass woven fabrics with the resins, and were laminated with non-sensing plies via a vacuum-bag process to produce sensored laminates. The self-monitoring performance of the laminates was assessed during monotonic and cyclic three-point bending tests, as well as ball drop impact tests. A higher sensitivity was found for the CB-based systems (Gauge Factor 6.1), while MWCNTs (0.55 and 1.04) ensure electrical percolation at lower filler contents, as expected. Defectively manufactured and deliberately damaged composite laminates fabricated with different continuous reinforcing fibres (respectively, carbon and glass) and polymer matrices (respectively, thermoset and thermoplastic) were inspected in magnetic resonance imaging equipment. Two pulse sequences were evaluated during non-destructive examination conducted in saline solution-immersed samples to simulate load-bearing orthopaedic implants permanently in contact with biofluids. The orientation, positioning, shape, and especially the size of translaminar and delamination fractures were determined according to stringent structural assessment criteria. The spatial distribution, shape, and contours of water-filled voids were sufficiently delineated to infer the amount of absorbed water if thinner image slices than this study were used. The surface texture of composite specimens featuring roughness, waviness, indentation, crushing, and scratches was outlined, with fortuitous artefacts not impairing the image quality and interpretation. Low electromagnetic shielding glass fibres delivered the highest, while electrically conductive carbon fibres produced the poorest quality images, particularly when blended with thermoplastic polymer, though reliable image interpretation was still attainable. Polybutylene succinate (PBS) composites filled with various mass fractions of silicon carbide (SiC) particles were fabricated via slow melt extrusion. The morphological analysis revealed that the fabrication technique assisted in achieving a good adhesion between the PBS and SiC, along with excellent filler dispersion throughout the PBS matrix. The inclusion of 40 wt.% SiC in the PBS composite afforded a 10 °C increase in the thermal degradation temperature and a 160% enhancement in the thermal conductivity relative to the neat PBS. The crystallization temperature also increased with the inclusion of SiC particles, thus making the composites easier to process. Furthermore, the improvement in the Young's modulus of the PBS composites increased their rigidity and stiffness relative to the neat PBS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A new paradigm in continuous fiber-reinforced polymer fused filament fabrication based on a thermoset-thermoplastic bi-matrix material system is proposed and proved. This totally new 3-D printing concept has the potential to overcome the drawbacks and to combine the advantages of separate thermoset and thermoplastic-based, fused filament fabrication methods and to advance continuous fiber-reinforced polymer 3-D printing toward higher mechanical performances of 3-D printed parts. Electronic devices are increasingly dense, underscoring the need for effective thermal management. A polyimide (PI) matrix nanocomposite film combining boron nitride (BN)-coated copper nanoparticles (CuNPs@BN) and nanowires (CuNWs@BN) was fabricated by a flexible and fast technique for enhanced thermal conductivity and the dielectric properties of nanocomposite films. The thermal conductivity of (CuNPs-CuNWs)@BN/PI composite comprising 10 wt % filler loading rose to 4.32 W/mK, indicating a nearly 24.1-fold increase relative to the value obtained for pure PI matrix. The relative permittivity and dielectric loss approximated 4.92 and 0.026 at 1 MHz, respectively. The results indicated that the surface modification of CuNPs and CuNWs by introducing a ceramic insulating layer BN effectively promoted the formation of thermal conductive networks of nanofillers in the PI matrix.
