Mycotoxins are a major threat to animal and human health, as well as to the global feed supply chain. Among them, aflatoxins, fumonisins, zearalenone, T-2 toxins, deoxynivalenol, and Alternaria toxins are the most common mycotoxins found in animal feed, with genotoxic, cytotoxic, carcinogenic, and mutagenic effects that concern the animal industry. The chronic negative effects of mycotoxins on animal health and production and the negative economic impact on the livestock industry make it crucial to develop and implement solutions to mitigate mycotoxins. In this review, we summarize the current knowledge of the mycotoxicosis effect in livestock animals as a result of their contaminated diet. In addition, we discuss the potential of five promising phytogenics (curcumin, silymarin, grape pomace, olive pomace, and orange peel extracts) with demonstrated positive effects on animal performance and health, to present them as potential anti-mycotoxin solutions. We describe the composition and the main promising characteristics of these bioactive compounds that can exert beneficial effects on animal health and performance, and how these phytogenic feed additives can help to alleviate mycotoxins' deleterious effects. The design and construction of residences for persons with Alzheimer's disease (AD) have been based on the recommendations of design guides, the results of empirical tests with samples of the population, and the experience of architects and planners. The reiteration of certain patterns, criteria, and guidelines has given rise to a new type of building that has not yet been explicitly described. The aim of this paper is to determine the main characteristics of this typology. This research is based on a critical review methodology, analysing 30 care homes built over the last four decades across various global contexts. Detailed surveys of plans, projects, and buildings were carried out, allowing a comparative analysis of the architectural attributes to determine the most influential parameters for these buildings. The results indicate that environments designed with safety, accessibility, and opportunities for social interaction in mind—and, above all, those that are personalised to the needs of this collective—significantly enhance the behaviour, emotional state, and cognitive state of their residents. The main theoretical contributions include identifying and stating the key features of this type, such as small scale, basic cell housing, comprehensible organisation, and sensory stimulation of spaces, among others. The breakthrough of this study that differentiates it from other works in this field is that it provides concrete guidelines to approach the planning, design, and construction of these kinds of residences. The significance of this research lies in the definition of this unique typology, which is not characterised by its morphology, shape, or formal composition but rather focused on promoting an adequate cognitive and physiological reception of the space by the users. Obtaining high-resolution 3D structures of membrane proteins through X-ray crystallography remains a longstanding bottleneck in the field of structural biology. This challenge has led to the optimization of purification methods to acquire high-yielding, pure proteins suitable for crystallization. In this study, we performed crystallization screenings of purified human α4β2 nAChR using a polarized in meso method. After reconstituting the detergent-solubilized α4β2 nAChR into the LCP matrix, the samples were incubated in a polarized lipid matrix using the RMP@LMx device developed in our laboratory. The results showed that under these conditions, the α4β2-nAChR-LFC 16 complex gave a mobile fraction >0.8, suggesting that its diffusion in the polarized lipid matrix is favorable for crystal nucleation. Voltages above 70 mV restricted crystal formation due to sample dehydration. Furthermore, a lipid analysis using UPLC-ESI MS/MS revealed a profile necessary for preserving protein integrity and promoting diffusion across the LCP. We harvested a single crystal and subjected it to X-ray diffraction, resulting in reflections comparable to previous studies of the muscle-type nAChR from Torpedo californica. X-ray diffraction of a single crystal gave distinct low-resolution diffractions of protein nature. The study of environmental flow has garnered significant scientific interest due to the considerable degradation caused by human activities on aquatic ecosystem dynamics. Environmental flow is defined as the quantity, timing, and quality of water flow required to sustain freshwater and estuarine ecosystems while meeting human demands. Research in riverine ecosystems can generate the critical scientific knowledge needed to determine an adequate environmental flow that balances the requirements of both aquatic organisms and human populations. This study is part of a series of investigations aimed at field-testing different methodologies to determine appropriate environmental flow levels for rivers with specific characteristics. In particular, we adapted and validated a holistic methodology for calculating the environmental flow regime in the Tempisque River basin in Costa Rica. This research involved analyzing hydrological parameters, hydraulic conditions, the presence of flow bioindicators, and various anthropogenic uses of the river (such as human consumption, productive, recreational, and cultural activities) to estimate environmental flow requirements throughout the year. The findings indicate that the lower and upper limits of the environmental flow for the studied section of the Tempisque River correspond to the monthly excesses of 95.00% and 64.00%, respectively. These results provide a reliable annual flow regime that can inform decision-making by authorities in water resource management, particularly in regions where there is a high demand for water across different human activities. Simple Summary: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is a leading cause of death in Spain, but early detection through screening can significantly reduce the risk of death. However, many people in Spain do not participate in these screening programs, like the faecal occult blood test and colonoscopy. To better understand the benefits of screening, we conducted a study comparing patients diagnosed through screening with those diagnosed after developing symptoms. Our study included 315 people diagnosed with CRC at a public hospital in Elda, Spain, from 2014 to 2018, with follow-up until 2023 or death. We found that patients diagnosed through screening were more likely to have early-stage cancer and a family history of CRC, while those diagnosed after symptoms appeared were more likely to have advanced cancer and other chronic diseases. People diagnosed based on symptoms had a higher risk of death from CRC and other causes. Our findings show that CRC screening leads to earlier diagnosis, improving survival rates. These results support the need for public health policies that encourage widespread participation in CRC screening programs to save lives. Despite these advancements, CRC screening uptake remains low in Spain, highlighting the need for studies comparing outcomes between screening-diagnosed and symptom-diagnosed patients to better understand the impact on overall survival and to quantify the clinical benefit in prognosis at diagnosis and at the end of follow-up. Methods: We conducted a retrospective cohort study with the following objectives: to compare stage at diagnosis, all-cause mortality, and disease-specific mortality among people diagnosed with CRC based on screening and based on symptoms; to identify the risk factors associated with mortality in this population; and to evaluate the effectiveness of screening on survival and early detection. Our study included people diagnosed with CRC in the public hospital of Elda (Spain) from 2014 to 2018; follow-up was until 2023 or death. Our primary outcome was all-cause mortality, which we analysed using Kaplan–Meier curves. We also investigated CRC-specific mortality and other-cause mortality. Results: Our sample included 315 people (186 with symptom-based diagnoses, 129 with screening-based diagnoses). The mean length of follow-up was 62.8 months. The screening group had a higher prevalence of a family history of CRC (p = 0.008), a distal tumour location (p = 0.002), and a cancer stage of 0 or I (p < 0.001). The symptoms group had a higher prevalence of a proximal CRC (p = 0.002), other chronic diseases (p < 0.001), and stages II, III, and IV (p < 0.001). Two variables were associated with mortality: stage IV at diagnosis and previous cancers. People with a symptom-based diagnosis had a higher prevalence of stage IV at diagnosis and a higher cumulative incidence of CRC mortality and all-cause mortality at the end of follow-up (p < 0.05). The Kaplan–Meier curves also showed a higher rate of all-cause mortality in the symptoms group throughout the follow-up. Conclusion: CRC screening enables an earlier diagnosis and improves survival. Background: The prevention and treatment of bone loss and osteoporotic fractures is a public health challenge. Combined with normobaric hypoxia, whole-body vibration has a high clinic potential in bone health and body composition. The effect of this therapy may be mediated by its action on bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs). Objectives: Evaluate the effects of cyclic low-vibration stimuli and/or hypoxia on bone marrow-derived human MSC differentiation. Methods: MSCs were exposed four days per week, two hours/day, to hypoxia (3% O2) and/or vibration before they were induced to differentiate or during differentiation into osteoblasts or adipocytes. Gene and protein expression of osteoblastic, adipogenic, and cytoskeletal markers were studied, as well as extracellular matrix mineralization and lipid accumulation. Results: early osteoblastic markers increased in undifferentiated MSCs, pretreated in hypoxia and vibration. This pretreatment also increased mRNA levels of osteoblastic genes and beta-catenin protein in the early stages of differentiation into osteoblasts without increasing mineralization. When MSCs were exposed to vibration under hypoxia or normoxia during osteoblastic differentiation, mineralization increased with respect to cultures without vibrational stimuli. In MSCs differentiated into adipocytes, both in those pretreated as well as exposed to different conditions during differentiation, lipid formation decreased. Changes in adipogenic gene expression and increased beta-catenin protein were observed in cultures treated during differentiation. Conclusions: Exposure to cyclic hypoxia in combination with low-intensity vibratory stimuli had positive effects on osteoblastic differentiation and negative ones on adipogenesis of bone marrow-derived MSCs. These results suggest that in elderly or frail people with difficulty performing physical activity, exposure to normobaric cyclic hypoxia and low-density vibratory stimuli could improve bone metabolism and health. This review paper examined the global landscape of research on continental flood early warning systems (EWS), shedding light on key trends, geographic disparities, and research priorities. Continental floods stand as one of the most pervasive and devastating disasters worldwide, necessitating proactive measures to mitigate their impact. Drawing upon a comprehensive analysis of the scholarly literature indexed in the Web of Science repository, this study unveiled significant patterns in EWS research. While the emphasis on flooding is evident, a considerable portion of research focuses on precipitation as a variable and modeling approaches. Furthermore, the influence of climate change emerges as a prominent theme, though distinguishing between climate change and variability remains a crucial area for exploration. Geographically, Europe, particularly England and Italy, dominates research efforts in flood related EWS. Conversely, the limited representation of Central America and other regions such as Asia and Oceania, underscores the need for greater attention to regions facing significant flood risks. Importantly, the concept of total link strength emerges as a valuable metric, highlighting collaborative networks established by European countries and the United States. Based on these findings, recommendations are proposed to enhance the inclusivity and effectiveness of flood related EWS research, including a broader consideration of socio-economic factors, fostering collaboration among researchers from diverse regions, and prioritizing initiatives to strengthen research capacities in vulnerable areas. We are currently facing a potential 'polycrisis', a critical inflection point that requires a holistic response aimed at building collective foresight and preparedness for short-, medium-, and long-term risks. The role of higher education institutions and social stakeholders is decisive for sustainability goals. This paper presents a case study where academia, governance, and industry have aligned to challenge, inspire, and encourage universities to enhance student growth and bind macro-scale measures leading to a sustainable future. A teaching innovation project has served as a transforming lever, in combination with the private sector, to create a platform that reaches more than 50,000 undergraduate students and teaching staff. This structure, rooted in the 2031 Strategic Plan of the University of Granada, has also served to channel local and regional initiatives, establish effective partnerships with broad social members, raise awareness, and promote actions to advance in the pursuit of Sustainable Development Goals. A comprehensive overview is provided, which details its chronology, materials, results, challenges, impact, and descriptions of the various courses, programs, and actions. Simple Summary: Paratuberculosis (PTB) is a chronic disease that affects domestic and wild ruminants worldwide. This study was conducted in 12 diary caprine farms on the Canary Islands. The region counts with the fourth largest goat population in Spain and has "officially free" bovine tuberculosis status. Two sampling sessions were conducted, and 2774 serum samples were tested by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. In the first session, a prevalence of 18.4% was obtained, varying from 2.5% up to 61.1%. In the second session, the effect of PTB vaccination was evaluated and both non-vaccinated (nV) and vaccinated (V) were included. Variable tendencies in antibody development were registered in farms with different initial seroprevalences. In farms in which up to 10% of the animals were positive, more adult goats had antibodies against PTB after vaccination. In farms with more than 10% of ELISA-positive animals, a heterogeneous response to vaccination was reported. We observed that in farms with higher initial prevalence, fewer goats that were V developed antibodies. Our work characterizes the caprine PTB situation on the Canary Islands and gives new insights on the effect of farm prevalence on the immune response to PTB vaccination, although further studies on a greater scale are needed. Twelve farms were included with 2774 serum samples tested by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for detection of anti-MAP antibodies in two sessions. In the first session, an overall apparent prevalence of 18.4% (2.5% up to 61.1%) was obtained. Farms with prevalences (0–10%], (10–20%] and >20% were identified, with differences in seroconversion in the same prevalence group between farms and age ranges. Non-vaccinated (nV) and vaccinated (V) animals were included in the second sampling session. Higher levels of antibodies were detected in V animals older than 12 months, with considerable variations between age ranges and farms. Our results describe the current PTB status of the Canary Islands' goat farming. Furthermore, new insights on the effect of the farm prevalence on seroconversion in V animals are provided, although further studies are needed to evaluate the multiple factors affecting the immune response to anti-MAP vaccination. Background: In susceptible hosts, SARS-CoV2-induced hyperinflammation accounts for an increased mortality. The search of adjuvant immunomodulatory therapies has been ongoing ever since the pandemic outbreak. Aim: Our purpose was to evaluate the efficacy of cyclosporin A (CsA) as an add-on therapy to the standard of care (SoC) in patients with severe COVID-19 pneumonia. Methods: We conducted a randomized clinical trial in patients admitted to eight Spanish tertiary hospitals. Patients were stratified into two severity categories and randomized in a 1:1 ratio to receive a corticosteroid-based standard therapy with or without CsA. The primary endpoint was FiO2 recovery by Day 12 without relapses. Results: 109 patients were included and randomized, and 98 of them considered for the mITT population (51 assigned to the CsA + SoC group and 47 to the SoC group). A total of 35 (68.6%) patients from the CsA + SoC group and 32 (71.1%) patients from the SoC group reached the primary endpoint in the mITT analysis. No differences were found after stratification into age groups, in the severity level at admission, or in a combination of both. Overall, the time to FiO2 normalization was 7.4 days vs. 7.9 days in the experimental and control groups, respectively. Global mortality was 8.2%. Severe adverse events were uncommon and equally distributed between arms. Conclusion: The addition of CsA did not show differences over a corticosteroid-based treatment in the clinical course of the included patients. The triad of vascular impairment, muscle atrophy, and cognitive decline represents critical age-related conditions that significantly impact health. Vascular impairment disrupts blood flow, precipitating the muscle mass reduction seen in sarcopenia and the decline in neuronal function characteristic of neurodegeneration. Our limited understanding of the intricate relationships within this triad hinders accurate diagnosis and effective treatment strategies. This review analyzes the interrelated mechanisms that contribute to these conditions, with a specific focus on oxidative stress, chronic inflammation, and impaired nutrient delivery. The aim is to understand the common pathways involved and to suggest comprehensive therapeutic approaches. Vascular dysfunctions hinder the circulation of blood and the transportation of nutrients, resulting in sarcopenia characterized by muscle atrophy and weakness. Vascular dysfunction and sarcopenia have a negative impact on physical function and quality of life. Neurodegenerative diseases exhibit comparable pathophysiological mechanisms that affect cognitive and motor functions. Preventive and therapeutic approaches encompass lifestyle adjustments, addressing oxidative stress, inflammation, and integrated therapies that focus on improving vascular and muscular well-being. Better understanding of these links can refine therapeutic strategies and yield better patient outcomes. This study emphasizes the complex interplay between vascular dysfunction, muscle degeneration, and cognitive decline, highlighting the necessity for multidisciplinary treatment approaches. Approximately 31% of patients previously infected with SARS-CoV-2 are living with symptoms of long COVID in the United States. Long COVID significantly reduces quality of life and increases morbidity and disability; however, treatment options are limited. Enhanced External Counterpulsation (EECP) is an FDA-approved, non-invasive treatment for the management of cardiovascular symptoms with a mechanism of action which stimulates pathways that induce endothelial homeostasis, improving microvascular function, inflammation, and immune regulation, thereby potentially targeting the underlying etiology of long COVID. We recently reported that EECP improved symptoms in 231 patients with long COVID. Previous studies assessing the effects of EECP for long COVID have lacked a control group. As such, this analysis is the first comparing outcomes in patients with long COVID undergoing EECP (n = 33) to a non-treated group (control, n = 33). The patients were matched for baseline characteristics, and all patients completed patient-reported outcome assessments, including PROMIS Fatigue, the Duke Activity Status Index (DASI), and the Rose Dyspnea Scale (RDS), two times within a specified time interval. When comparing the average change from baseline in both groups, the EECP-treated patients' improvement was significantly greater than the improvement in the control group across all measured endpoints, including PROMIS Fatigue (−15.0 ± 8.9 vs. −2.8 ± 5.9, p < 0.001) and DASI (+17.8 (11.8, 26.8) vs. +1.8 (−3.5, 5.5), p < 0.001), and there was an improvement of ≥1 in the RDS class (75.8% vs. 33.3%, p < 0.001). This study's limitations include the small sample size and lack of information regarding concurrent treatments or interventions in the non-treated group; however, these preliminary data support EECP as a potential low-risk treatment option for patients with long COVID. Banana (Musa sp.) is one of the world's most planted and consumed crops. Analysis of plantations using a geospatial perspective is growing in Costa Rica, and it can be used to optimize environmental analysis. The aim of this study was to propose a methodology to identify areas prone to water accumulation to quantify nitrate concentrations using geospatial modeling techniques in a 40 ha section of a banana plantation located in Siquirres, Limón, Costa Rica. A total of five geomorphometric variables (Slope, Slope Length factor (LS factor), Terrain Ruggedness Index (TRI), Topographic Wetness Index (TWI), and Flow Accumulation) were selected in the geospatial model. A 9 cm resolution digital elevation model (DEM) derived from unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) was employed to calculate geomorphometric variables. ArcGIS 10.6 and SAGA GIS 7.8.2 software were used in the data integration and analysis. The results showed that Slope and Topographic Wetness Index (TWI) are the geomorphometric parameters that better explained the areas prone to water accumulation and indicated which drainage channels are proper areas to sample nitrate values. The average nitrate concentration in high-probability areas was 8.73 ± 1.53 mg/L, while in low-probability areas, it was 11.28 ± 2.49 mg/L. Despite these differences, statistical analysis revealed no significant difference in nitrate concentrations between high- and low-probability areas. The aim of this study was to investigate the influence of executive functioning and cognitive performance on individual experimentally induced pain perception during distractor tasks in an asymptomatic pain-free population. A total of 59 healthy pain-free subjects (59.3% women, mean age: 46.5 ± 24.7 years) completed a battery test that assessed execution functions (cognitive flexibility, working memory, mental inhibition), attention level, and psychological aspects (anxiety/depressive levels—HADS, pain catastrophizing—PCS, pain anxiety symptoms—PASS 20, sleep quality—PSQI) before conducting two n-back distraction tasks. Pain was experimentally induced with a thermal stimulus that was able to induce moderate pain (70/100 points) and applied to the non-dominant forearm. The thermal stimulus was applied before and during both (one-back and two-back) distraction tasks. The analyses consisted of separated repeated-measures ANOVA that considered the functioning on each test (cognitive flexibility, working memory, mental inhibition, selective attention) and controlled for sociodemographic and psychological aspects by comparing the pain intensity at the baseline and during the one-back and two-back distractor tasks. All ANOVAs found a significant effect of the distraction task, which indicates that the perceived pain intensity scores were lower during the one-back and two-back tasks (p < 0.001) as compared with the baseline. No interaction effect between the distractor tasks and working memory (p = 0.546), mental inhibition (p = 0.16), cognitive flexibility (p = 0.069), or selective attention (p = 0.105) was identified. The current study found that a distraction task decreased the perceived intensity of experimentally induced pain in asymptomatic pain-free individuals and that this effect was not related to executive function or attention levels. The First-Person Shooter is a very popular genre in electronic sports (esports), where there are different aiming techniques such as Aim Flicking and Aim Tracking. Although the mouse grip is suggested as one of the most important factors in gaming performance, there is a lack of evidence on this topic. Therefore, the purpose of the present study was to determine the performances of three types of mouse grips (palm grip, claw grip, and fingertip grip) in two different tasks (flicking and tracking tasks) by analyzing kinematic and scoring variables. Twenty-two participants performed the tasks on a computer with the same monitor and mouse, each using their preferred grip: palm grip, claw grip, and fingertip grip. The aim400kg was used to perform the tasks, and a camera system (Optitrack's Flex 3) was used to capture the mouse movement. The results from the flicking task indicated significant differences in the minimum cursor trajectory, with higher values observed in the claw grip compared to both the palm and fingertip grips. However, no significant differences were observed in the tracking task in terms of velocity, acceleration, or hand movement. Moreover, only high correlations were observed in the flicking task between Score and Reaction Time (r = −0.911) and between Score and Total Distance (r = 0.724). In conclusion, the mouse grip does not affect the Aim Flicking or Aim Tracking task performance. This study aimed to comprehensively assess the metabolic, mitochondrial, and inflammatory effects of first-line efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (EFV/FTC/TDF) single-tablet regimen (STR) relative to untreated asymptomatic HIV infection. To this end, we analyzed 29 people with HIV (PWH) treated for at least one year with this regimen vs. 33 antiretroviral-naïve PWH. Excellent therapeutic activity was accompanied by significant alterations in metabolic parameters. The treatment group showed increased plasmatic levels of glucose, total cholesterol and its fractions (LDL and HDL), triglycerides, and hepatic enzymes (GGT, ALP); conversely, bilirubin levels (total and indirect fraction) decreased in the treated cohort. Mitochondrial performance was preserved overall and treatment administration even promoted the recovery of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) content depleted by the virus, although this was not accompanied by the recovery in some of their encoded proteins (since cytochrome c oxidase II was significantly decreased). Inflammatory profile (TNFα, IL-6), ameliorated after treatment in accordance with viral reduction and the recovery of TNFα levels correlated to mtDNA cell restoration. Thus, although this regimen causes subclinical metabolic alterations, its antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties may be associated with partial improvement in mitochondrial function. One of theories explaining the development of long-lasting symptoms after an acute severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection include changes in the methylation pattern of the host. The current study aimed to investigate whether DNA methylation levels associated with the angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2) promoter are different when comparing individuals previously hospitalized due to COVID-19 who then developed long-lasting post-COVID pain with those previously hospitalized due to COVID-19 who did not develop post-COVID-19 pain symptoms. Non-stimulated saliva samples were obtained from a cohort of 279 (mean age: 56.5, SD: 13.0 years old, 51.5% male) COVID-19 survivors who needed hospitalization. Clinical data were collected from hospital medical records. Participants were asked to disclose pain symptoms developed during the first three months after hospital admission due to COVID-19 and persisting at the time of the interview. Methylations of five CpG dinucleotides in the ACE2 promoter were quantified (as percentages). Participants were evaluated up to 17.8 (SD: 5.3) months after hospitalization. Thus, 39.1% of patients exhibited post-COVID-19 pain. Most patients (77.05%) in the cohort developed localized post-COVID-19 pain. Headache and pain in the lower extremity were experienced by 29.4% of the patients. Seven patients received a post-infection diagnosis of fibromyalgia based on the presence of widespread pain characteristics (11.6%) and other associated symptoms. No significant differences in methylation percentages at any CpG location of the ACE2 promoter were identified when comparing individuals with and without post-COVID-19 pain. The current study did not observe differences in methylation levels of the ACE2 promoter depending on the presence or absence of long-lasting post-COVID-19 pain symptoms in individuals who needed hospitalization due to COVID-19 during the first wave of the pandemic. The aim of the present study was to evaluate skin temperature (Tsk) asymmetries, using infrared thermography, in professional padel players before (PRE), after (POST) and 10 min after training (POST10), and their relationship with perceptual variables and training characteristics. Thermal images were taken of 10 players before, after and 10 min after a standardized technical training. After training, Tsk of the dominant side was higher than before training in the anterior forearm (30.8 ± 0.4 °C vs. 29.1 ± 1.2 °C, p < 0.01; ES = 1.9), anterior shoulder (31.6 ± 0.6 °C vs. 30.9 ± 0.6 °C, p < 0.05; ES = 1.0) posterior arm (29.5 ± 1.0 °C vs. 28.3 ± 1.2 °C, p < 0.05; ES = 1.0), and posterior forearm (30.8 ± 0.9 °C vs. 29.3 ± 1.6 °C, p < 0.05; ES = 1.1). Likewise, these differences were significant POST10 in the anterior arm, anterior forearm, anterior shoulder, posterior arm and posterior forearm. Comparing the different moments of measurement (PRE, POST and POST10), the temperature was higher POST10 in all the regions analyzed except for the shoulder, abdominals, and lower back. Also, correlations were found between fatigue variation and temperature variation between limbs (Tsk dominance), and no correlation was found except between age and posterior thigh (|r| = 0.69; p < 0.05), and between the racket mass and anterior knee (|r| = 0.81; p < 0.01). In conclusion, infrared thermography allows monitoring of skin asymmetries between limbs in professional padel players, but these asymmetries were not related to overall fatigue variation, overall pain variation, years of experience and training hours. Urban regeneration is perceived as an efficient solution addressing multiple problems in today's cities, offering answers to the social, economic, physical, and environmental challenges faced by consolidated fabrics. This paper utilizes the assessment tool developed in the Urban Regeneration Strategy of Castilla and León to conduct a comparative analysis of proposals formulated since 2014 in neighborhoods built after the Spanish Civil War in this region. The aim is to validate the effectiveness of this methodology to establish the quality and sustainability of these initiatives and to identify the strengths and weaknesses of the cases analyzed. The results obtained endorse the operability of this evaluation process since it makes it possible to assess the scope of the planned measures at an early stage. This makes it possible to introduce improvements during the implementation phase or in future interventions, which will have a positive impact on their outcome. It is known that SARS-CoV-2 can translocate via membrane ACE2 exopeptidase into the host cells, and thus hypomethylation of ACE2 possibly upregulates its expression, enhancing the risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection. This study investigated if DNA methylation levels of the ACE2 promoter are associated with the development of post-COVID-19 symptomatology in a cohort of COVID-19 survivors who had been previously hospitalized. Non-stimulated saliva samples were obtained from 279 (51.5 male, mean age: 56.5 ± 13.0 years old) COVID-19 survivors who were hospitalized during the first wave of the pandemic. A face-to-face interview in which patients described the presence of post-COVID-19 symptoms (defined as a symptom that started no later than three months after SARS-CoV-2 infection) that they suffered from to an experienced healthcare trainer was conducted. Methylation of five CpG dinucleotides in the ACE2 promoter was quantified using bisulfite pyrosequencing. The percentage of methylation (%) was associated with the presence of the following reported post-COVID-19 symptoms: fatigue, dyspnea at rest, dyspnea at exertion, brain fog, memory loss, concentration loss, or gastrointestinal problems. Participants were assessed a mean of 17.8 (SD: 5.3) months after hospitalization. At that time, 88.1% of the patients experienced at least one post-COVID-19 symptom (mean number for each patient: 3.0; SD: 1.9 post-COVID-19 symptoms). Dyspnea at exertion (67.3%), fatigue (62.3%), and memory loss (31.2%) were the most frequent post-COVID-19 symptoms in the sample. Overall, the analysis did not reveal any difference in the methylation of the ACE2 promoter in any of the CpG locations according to the presence or absence of fatigue, dyspnea at rest, dyspnea at exertion, memory loss, brain fog, concentration loss, and gastrointestinal problems. A complete standardized necropsy of nine Canarian houbara bustards revealed that trauma was the cause of death in all cases. The most notable gross lesions associated with trauma included bone fractures, soft tissue lacerations, hemorrhages, luxations, and hemocoelom. The inguinal area, chest, and wings were the body regions more frequently affected. A histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and entomology analysis confirmed that numerous birds survived the initial trauma. We concluded that when a houbara bustard collides with an overhead line, it frequently survives the initial trauma, with a survival time ranging from minutes to hours. Medical treatment of coronavirus 19 disease (COVID-19) is a therapeutic challenge. The available data strongly suggest that calcifediol treatment may reduce the severity of COVID-19, and corticosteroids are the treatment of choice worldwide for severe COVID-19. Both have a very similar action profile, and their combined use in patients may modify the contribution of each administered compound. Objective: To evaluate how treatment with calcifediol and/or corticosteroids in medical practice modified the need for ICU admission, death, or poor prognosis of patients hospitalized with COVID-19 during the first outbreaks. Design, patients and setting: A retrospective observational cohort study of patients admitted for COVID-19 to the Pneumology Unit of the Hospital Universitario Reina Sofía (Córdoba, Spain). Interventions: Patients were treated with calcifediol or/and corticosteroids with the best available therapy and standard care, according to clinical practice guidelines. Measurements: Admission to the intensive care unit (ICU) or death during hospitalization and poor prognosis. Results: Seven hundred and twenty-eight patients were included. According to the treatment received, they were included in four groups: calcifediol (n = 68), glucocorticoids (n = 112), both (n = 510), or neither (n = 38). Of the 578 patients treated with calcifediol, 88 were admitted to the ICU (15%), while of the 150 not treated with calcifediol, 39 required ICU admission (26%) (p < 0.01). Among the patients taking calcifediol without glucocorticoids, only 4 of 68 (5.8%) required ICU admission, compared to 84 of 510 (16.5%) treated with both (p = 0.022). Of the 595 patients who had a good prognosis, 568 (82.01%) had received treatment with calcifediol versus the 133 patients with a poor prognosis, of whom 90 (67.66%) had received calcifediol (p < 0.001). This difference was not found for corticosteroids. Interpretation: The treatment of choice for hospitalized patients with moderate or mild COVID-19 could be calcifediol, not administering corticosteroids, until the natural history of the disease reaches a stage of hyperinflammation. Aeromonas trota is sensitive to most antibiotics and the sole species of this genus susceptible to ampicillin. This susceptibility profile could be related to its inability to acquire exogenous DNA. In this study, A. trota isolates were analyzed to establish their capacity to incorporate foreign DNA. Fourteen strains were identified as A. trota by multilocus phylogenetic analysis (MLPA). Minimal inhibitory concentrations of antibiotics (MIC) were assessed, confirming the susceptibility to most antibiotics tested. To explore their capacity to be transformed, A. trota strains were used as recipients in different horizontal transfer assays. Results showed that around fifty percent of A. trota strains were able to incorporate pBAMD1-2 and pBBR1MCS-3 plasmids after conjugal transfer. In all instances, conjugation frequencies were very low. Interestingly, several isoforms of plasmid pBBR1MCS-3 were observed in transconjugants. Strains could not receive pAr-32, a native plasmid from A. salmonicida. A. trota strains were unable to receive DNA by means of electroporation, natural transformation or vesiduction. These results confirm that A. trota species are extremely refractory to horizontal gene transfer, which could be associated to plasmid instability resulting from oligomerization or to the presence of defense systems against exogenous genetic material in their genomes. To explain the poor results of horizontal gene transfer (HGT), selected genomes were sequenced and analyzed, revealing the presence of defense systems, which could prevent the stable incorporation of exogenous DNA in A. trota. Patients with chronic hypoxia show a higher tumor incidence; however, no primary common cause has been recognized. Given the similarities between cellular reprogramming and oncogenic transformation, we directly compared these processes in human cells subjected to hypoxia. Mouse embryonic fibroblasts were employed as controls to compare transfection and reprogramming efficiency; human adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells were employed as controls in human cells. Easily obtainable human peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) were chosen to establish a standard protocol to compare cell reprogramming (into induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs)) and oncogenic focus formation efficiency. Cell reprogramming was achieved for all three cell types, generating actual pluripotent cells capable for differentiating into the three germ layers. The efficiencies of the cell reprogramming and oncogenic transformation were similar. Hypoxia slightly increased the reprogramming efficiency in all the cell types but with no statistical significance for PBMCs. Various PBMC types can respond to hypoxia differently; lymphocytes and monocytes were, therefore, reprogrammed separately, finding a significant difference between normoxia and hypoxia in monocytes in vitro. These differences were then searched for in vivo. The iPSCs and oncogenic foci were generated from healthy volunteers and patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Although higher iPSC generation efficiency in the patients with COPD was found for lymphocytes, this increase was not statistically significant for oncogenic foci. Remarkably, a higher statistically significant efficiency in COPD monocytes was demonstrated for both processes, suggesting that physiological hypoxia exerts an effect on cell reprogramming and oncogenic transformation in vivo in at least some cell types. Bayesian networks (BNs) are probabilistic graphical models that leverage Bayes' theorem to portray dependencies and cause-and-effect relationships between variables. These networks have gained prominence in the field of health sciences, particularly in diagnostic processes, by allowing the integration of medical knowledge into models and addressing uncertainty in a probabilistic manner. Objectives: This review aims to provide an exhaustive overview of the current state of Bayesian networks in disease diagnosis and prognosis. Additionally, it seeks to introduce readers to the fundamental methodology of BNs, emphasising their versatility and applicability across varied medical domains. Employing a meticulous search strategy with MeSH descriptors in diverse scientific databases, we identified 190 relevant references. These were subjected to a rigorous analysis, resulting in the retention of 60 papers for in-depth review. The robustness of our approach minimised the risk of selection bias. Results: The selected studies encompass a wide range of medical areas, providing insights into the statistical methodology, implementation feasibility, and predictive accuracy of BNs, as evidenced by an average area under the curve (AUC) exceeding 75%. The comprehensive analysis underscores the adaptability and efficacy of Bayesian networks in diverse clinical scenarios. The majority of the examined studies demonstrate the potential of BNs as reliable adjuncts to clinical decision-making. The findings of this review affirm the role of Bayesian networks as accessible and versatile artificial intelligence tools in healthcare. They offer a viable solution to address complex medical challenges, facilitating timely and informed decision-making under conditions of uncertainty. Biorefineries (BRFs) that process the organic fraction of municipal solid waste and generate bioproducts and bioenergies have attracted attention because they can simultaneously address energy and environmental problems/needs. The objective of this article was to critically review the microbial production of hyaluronic acid (MPHA) and its production profile for its integration into a GBAER-type BRF (a type of BRF based on organic wastes) and to identify the environmental and economic sustainability aspects of the modified BRF that would confirm it as a sustainable option. It was found that the MPHA by selected strains of pathogenic Streptococci was moderate to high, although the trend to work with genetically transformed (GT) (innocuous) bacteria is gaining momentum. For instance, A GT strain of Corynebacterium glutamicum reached a maximum HA production of 71.4 g L−1. MPHA reports that use organic wastes as sources of carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) are scarce. When alternative sources of C and N were used simultaneously, HA production by S. zooepidemicus was lower than that with conventional sources. We identified several knowledge gaps that must be addressed regarding aspects of process scale-up, HA industrial production, economic feasibility and sustainability, and environmental sustainability of the MPHA. In order to reduce energy consumption in buildings, this study used olive pruning sawdust (OTPS) instead of natural sand in the production of lightweight mortars. Different percentages of natural sand substitution were tested: 0, 10, 25, and 50% by volume of sand over 7 and 28 days of curing time. Additionally, the influence of a chemical pretreatment in an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide on the OTPS was also evaluated to mineralize the wood before its addition to the mortar mixture. Mortars with OTPS incorporations were characterized by volumetric shrinkage, bulk density, and capillary water absorption. Mechanical behavior was tested through compression and flexural tests. The addition of this byproduct decreased bulk density and increased mortar porosity. Pretreating olive pruning sawdust with an aqueous solution of calcium hydroxide was effective for wood mineralization, resulting in physical and mechanical properties superior to mortars without pretreatment. The results showed that a maximum addition of 10% by volume of OTPS treated with calcium hydroxide solution produced lighter mortars with similar mechanical properties to the control mortar. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the reliability of Garmin Vivofit® Jr. physical activity (PA) wristbands during daily life physical activities. Six wristbands were randomly selected from a stock of twenty-four. The wristbands were worn by a single four-year-old participant, with three on the right wrist area and three on the left wrist area. To assess device reliability under laboratory conditions on a treadmill (Powerjog, model JM200, Sport Engineering Ltd., Birmingham, UK), the participant wore the six wristbands while performing five work conditions: sitting and standing (30 times per minute, controlled by a metronome), walking at 3 km/h, walking at 4 km/h, running at 5 km/h, and running at 6 km/h. Throughout the six minutes, variables related to physical activity provided by the device, step volume, and minutes of physical activity were recorded using the specific application of the wristband (Garmin International Inc., Olathe, KS, USA). The intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were high for all six wristbands with each other, for both the number of steps taken (ICC = 0.991–0.998) and the number of minutes of PA (ICC = 0.892–0.977). The critical alpha value of the Cusum test was highest at.050 for all wristband associations. The Mediterranean diet, renowned for its health benefits, especially in reducing cardiovascular risks and protecting against diseases like diabetes and cancer, emphasizes virgin olive oil as a key contributor to these advantages. Despite being a minor fraction, the phenolic compounds in olive oil significantly contribute to its bioactive effects. This review examines the bioactive properties of hydroxytyrosol and related molecules, including naturally occurring compounds (-)-oleocanthal and (-)–oleacein, as well as semisynthetic derivatives like hydroxytyrosyl esters and alkyl ethers. (-)-Oleocanthal and (-)–oleacein show promising anti-tumor and anti-inflammatory properties, which are particularly underexplored in the case of (-)–oleacein. Additionally, hydroxytyrosyl esters exhibit similar effectiveness to hydroxytyrosol, while certain alkyl ethers surpass their precursor's properties. Remarkably, the emerging research field of the effects of phenolic molecules related to virgin olive oil on cell autophagy presents significant opportunities for underscoring the anti-cancer and neuroprotective properties of these molecules. Furthermore, promising clinical data from studies on hydroxytyrosol, (-)–oleacein, and (-)–oleocanthal urge further investigation and support the initiation of clinical trials with semisynthetic hydroxytyrosol derivatives. This review provides valuable insights into the potential applications of olive oil-derived phenolics in preventing and managing diseases associated with cancer, angiogenesis, and atherosclerosis. The main objective of this work is to evaluate the energy efficiency improvement obtained in grid-connected photovoltaic systems based on a dynamic reconfiguration strategy. The MIX and team reconfigurable photovoltaic system topologies have been considered since both minimize the operation of the inverters in low-load conditions. A numerical method is used to analyze the energy flows within the photovoltaic system, with a specific focus on the plant-oriented configuration. In this work, MIX systems are only presented briefly, while team reconfigurable photovoltaic systems are analyzed in more detail. This is because team systems can be implemented using conventional commercial inverters, electromechanical switches to redirect power flows, and a simple digital controller (as based on the Arduino platforms). The energy supplied to the grid by two grid-connected photovoltaic systems will be evaluated: one based on a classic non-reconfigurable strategy and another based on the team strategy. The measurement of the energy generated by these two systems, tested under various irradiance levels (emulating different climatic conditions), shows that reconfigurable systems always exhibit greater energy efficiency. Background: Lipoprotein(a) [Lp(a)] is a proatherogenic particle associated with increased cardiovascular risk. It is mainly genetically determined; so, the aim of our study is to evaluate the levels of Lp(a) in the relatives of a prospective cohort of patients who have suffered from an acute coronary syndrome (ACS) with Lp(a) ≥ 50 mg/dL. Methods: We conducted a multicenter prospective study, in which consecutive patients who had suffered from an ACS and presented Lp(a) ≥ 50 mg/dL and their first-degree relatives were included. Results: We included 413 subjects, of which 56.4% were relatives of the patients. Family history of early ischemic heart disease was present in 57.5%, and only 20.6% were receiving statin treatment. The family cohort was younger (37.5 vs. 59.1 years; p < 0.001), and 4% had ischemic heart disease and fewer cardiovascular risk factors. Mean Lp(a) levels were 64.9 mg/dL, 59.4% had levels ≥ 50 mg/dL, and 16.1% had levels ≥ 100 mg/dL. When comparing the patients with respect to their relatives, the mean level of Lp(a) was lower but without significant differences regarding the levels of LDLc, ApoB, and non-HDL. However, relatives with Lp(a) ≥ 50 mg/dL, had values similar to the group of patients with ACS (96.8 vs. 103.8 mg/dL; p = 0.18). No differences were found in Lp(a) levels in relatives based on the other lipid parameters. Conclusions: Overall, 59.4% of the first-degree relatives of patients who suffered from an ACS with Lp(a) ≥ 50 mg/dL also had elevated levels. Costa Rica produces a considerable, important quantity of wood residues. This waste can be pyrolyzed to produce charcoals as main products that can be effectively used as an energy source or to immobilize carbon for soil treatment. However, there is a lack of information about the pyrogenic carbonaceous materials (PCMs), such as charcoal or biochar, obtained at different pyrolysis temperatures. Hence, this study aimed to evaluate the quality of PCMs (physical, mechanical, ultimate analysis, and FTIR analysis) and charcoal characteristics (energetic properties and thermogravimetric analysis—TGA) and biochar characteristics (conductivity, pH, initial contact angle, and wetting rates) for four tropical wood residues produced in five temperatures (300 °C, 350 °C, 400 °C, 450 °C, and 500 °C). In general, pyrolysis temperature between 450 °C and 500 °C produced charcoals with lower values of density, moisture content, compression strength, volatiles, H and O content, and higher values of C and ash contents, conductivity, pH, initial contact angle, and wetting rates. FTIR and TGA analyses show that celluloses and lignin are pyrolyzed at these temperatures, so these temperatures are recommended. The range of 300–350 °C is not recommended, as these parameters were inverse. Multivariate analysis shows that (i) PCMs obtained at lower temperatures (300–350 °C) from Dipteryx panamensis, Hieronyma alchorneoides, and Tectona grandis belong to a cluster with poorer properties, indicating that these temperatures are not adequate for pyrolysis of these species; (ii) all the PCMs obtained from Gmelina arborea were grouped into one cluster, suggesting different PCM quality; and (iii) the PCMs produced from D. panamensis, H. alchorneoides, and T. grandis at 400–500 °C were grouped into another cluster with better properties, suggesting this pyrolysis temperature range as the best for these species. In view of the increasing occurrence of anthelmintic-resistant strains of gastrointestinal nematodes in ruminants, various alternative control strategies have been investigated, such as those based on the induction of protective immune responses by immunisation with parasite antigens. In this study, the protective activity of somatic antigens from adult worms of Teladorsagia circumcincta purified by affinity chromatography on thiol-sepharose was analysed in goats. After challenge, the enriched products induced a slight reduction in the cumulative faecal egg counts (21%) and in the number of worms (23.3%), with a greater effect on female worms, which also showed a reduction in parameters related to their fertility. These parasitological findings were associated with a Th2 immune response, with a prominent local humoral response and an eosinophilic infiltrate in the gastric mucosa (negatively associated with the fertility of female worms and the number of worms, respectively), as well as an infiltration of MCHII+, CD4+, IgG+ and IgA+ cells. However, several analyses showed an increase in CD8+ cells in the mucosa, as well as IL-2 expression in the gastric lymph nodes, which may have been associated with inhibition of protective responses or with the development of mixed Th1/Th2 responses, a finding that should be analysed in future studies. The aim of this study was to identify the association between four selected inflammatory polymorphisms with the development of long-term post-COVID symptoms in subjects who had been hospitalized due to SARS-CoV-2 infection during the first wave of the pandemic. These polymorphisms were selected as they are associated with severe COVID-19 disease and cytokine storm, so they could be important to prognoses post-COVID. A total of 408 (48.5% female, age: 58.5 ± 14.0 years) previously hospitalized COVID-19 survivors participated. The three potential genotypes of the following four single-nucleotide polymorphisms, IL-6 rs1800796, IL-10 rs1800896, TNF-α rs1800629, and IFITM3 rs12252, were obtained from non-stimulated saliva samples of the participants. The participants were asked to self-report the presence of any post-COVID symptoms (defined as symptoms that had started no later than one month after SARS-CoV-2 acute infection) and whether the symptoms persisted at the time of the study. At the time of the study (mean: 15.6, SD: 5.6 months after discharge), 89.4% of patients reported at least one post-COVID symptom (mean number of symptoms: 3.0; SD: 1.7). Fatigue (69.3%), pain (40.9%), and memory loss (27.2%) were the most prevalent post-COVID symptoms in the total sample. Overall, no differences in the post-COVID symptoms depending on the IL-6 rs1800796, IL-10 rs1800896, TNF-α rs1800629, and IFITM3 rs12252 genotypes were seen. The four SNPs assessed, albeit having been previously associated with inflammation and COVID-19 severity, did not cause a predisposition to the development of post-COVID symptoms in the previously hospitalized COVID-19 survivors. Styrene–butadiene–styrene copolymer (SBS) can be used to improve the mechanical and deformation properties of the binder used in its manufacture. However, the high cost of and variability in processing limit its performance. A secondary modifier to solve these problems is nano- and micromaterials that allow for the generation of unique properties in polymeric systems. Based on this, this study experimented with fly ash micro-filler (μFA) in low proportions as a binder modifier with SBS for use in PA mixes. The FA residue is considered in 3% and 5% dosages on a base binder with 5% SBS. Rheological results show that μFA improves classical, linear viscoelastic (LVE), and progressive damage properties compared with the modified binder. The PA blends with μFA reduce binder runout, resulting in a thicker film, thus showing better abrasion resistance in dry and wet conditions. Samples with μFA increase the post-cracking energy in indirect tension due to higher ductility. However, they decrease the fracture energy due to higher cracking before failure. Technological development has boosted the use of multi-sensor devices to monitor athletes' performance, but the location and connectivity between devices have been shown to affect data reliability. This preliminary study aimed to determine whether the placement of a multi-sensor device (WIMU PROTM) could affect the heart rate signal reception (GARMINTM chest strap) and, therefore, data accuracy. Thirty-two physical education students (20 men and 12 women) performed 20 min of exercise in a cycle ergometer based on the warm-up of the Function Threshold Power 20 test in laboratory conditions, carrying two WIMU PROTM devices (Back: inter-scapula; Bicycle: bicycle's handlebar—20 cm from the chest) and two GARMINTM chest straps. A one-dimensional statistical parametric mapping test found full agreement between the two situations (inter-scapula vs. bicycle's handlebar). Excellent intra-class correlation values were obtained during the warm-up (ICC = 0.99, [1.00–1.00], p < 0.001), the time trial test (ICC = 0.99, [1.00–1.00], p < 0.001) and the cool-down (ICC = 0.99, [1.00–1.00], p < 0.001). The Bland–Altman plots confirmed the total agreement with a bias value of 0.00 ± 0.1 bpm. The interscapular back placement of the WIMU PROTM device does not affect heart rate measurement accuracy with a GARMINTM chest strap during cycling exercise in laboratory conditions. Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common arrhythmia in adults. Prevention of the ischaemic risk with oral anticoagulants (OACs) is widely recommended, and current clinical guidelines recommend direct oral anticoagulants (DOACs) as preference therapy for stroke prevention. However, there are currently no clinical practice guidelines or recommendation documents on the optimal management of OACs in patients with AF that specifically address and adapt to the Central American and Caribbean context. The aim of this Delphi-like study is to respond to doubts that may arise in the management of OACs in patients with non-valvular AF in this geographical area. A consensus project was performed on the basis of a systematic review of the literature, a recommended ADOLOPMENT-like approach, and the application of a two-round Delphi survey. In the first round, 31 recommendations were evaluated and 30 reached consensus, of which, 10 unanimously agreed. The study assessed expert opinions in a wide variety of contextualized recommendations for the optimal management of DOACs in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation (NVAF). There is a broad consensus on the clinical practice guideline (CPG) statements used related to anticoagulation indication, patient follow-up, anticoagulation therapy complications, COVID-19 management and prevention, and cardiac interventions. The COVID-19 outbreak has brought to the forefront the importance of predicting and controlling an epidemic outbreak with policies such as vaccination or reducing social contacts. This paper studies an SIHR epidemic model characterized by susceptible (S), non-seriously infected (I), hospitalized (H), and recovered (R) subpopulations, and dynamic vaccination; vaccination itself and H are fed back, and its dynamics are also determined by a free-design time-dependent function and parameters. From a theoretical analysis, the well-posedness of the model is demonstrated; positivity and the disease-free ( P d f ) and endemic ( P e e ) equilibrium points are analyzed. The controlled reproduction number ( R c ) is proved to be a threshold for the local asymptotic stability of  P d f  and the existence  P e e ; when  R c < 1  ( R c > 1 ), then  P d f  is (not) locally asymptotically stable and  P e e  does not (does) exist. Simulations have been carried out with data concerning COVID-19 where the importance of keeping  R c < 1  to prevent the disease spreading and future deaths is highlighted. Diet diversity becomes especially relevant during adolescence to satisfy the adequate micronutrient intake. Diet diversity (DD) and micronutrient probability of adequacy (PA) were studied in 818 Costa Rican (CR) and 1202 Mexican (MX) adolescents aged 13–18 years. DD was compared using the Minimum Dietary Diversity (MDD) score. Receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves were employed to identify the optimal MDD for each sample from the respective countries. The mean MDD for the overall CR sample was 4.17 ± 1.43 points, and for the MX sample, the mean MDD was 4.68 ± 1.48 points. The proportion of adolescents with a DD was significantly higher in Costa Rica than in Mexico (66.5% vs. 55.6%; p < 0.0001). Also, DD was higher in rural Costa Rican adolescents, while no difference was found in the MX adolescents by area of residence. CR adolescents reported significantly higher PA than MX participants for 6 of the 11 micronutrients assessed. The calcium PA in MX adolescents was significantly higher than in the CR sample (MX: 0.84 vs. CR: 0.03; p < 0.0001), while low PA was obtained for iron in both countries (CR: 0.01 vs. MX: 0.07; p < 0.0001). In Costa Rica and Mexico, nutritional interventions and assessing the compliance of food-fortifying programs are needed to improve the PA of diverse micronutrients. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phyllanthus acuminatus has been studied for its vast medical and industrial potential. Phytochemical investigations reveal that the genus is a rich source of lignans, flavonoids, phenolics, terpenoids, and other metabolites. However, the phytochemical profile elucidation of this species still needs further research. The use of eliciting compounds such as salicylic acid and methyl jasmonate has managed to increase the production of secondary metabolites in plant cell cultures. Hairy roots of Phyllanthus acuminatus were produced in 250 mL flasks with a 16 h light/8 h darkness photoperiod under diffused light with a culture time of four weeks. The elicitors salicylic acid and methyl jasmonate were tested in 50 μM and 200 μM concentrations. Non-targeted analysis was done for the different treatments using HR-MS. Identified metabolites were grouped in phenylpropanoids, phenols, and mucic acids, and statistical analysis of relative concentrations was achieved. A significant change in phenols' relative concentrations appeared in the elicitations with salicylic acid. Because of the elicitation treatment, specific compounds increased their concentrations, some of which have known pharmacological effects and are used in treating chronic diseases. The best elicitation treatment was salicylic acid 50 μM as it increased by more than 100% the general content of phenols and phenylpropanoid derivates and triplicates the concentration of mucic acid derivates in treated hairy root extracts.
