Metal matrix composites (MMCs) combine metal with ceramic reinforcement, offering high strength, stiffness, corrosion resistance, and low weight for diverse applications. Al-SiC, a common MMC, consists of an aluminum matrix reinforced with silicon carbide, making it ideal for the aerospace and automotive industries. In this work, molecular dynamics simulations are performed to investigate the mechanical properties of the complex-shaped models of Al-SiC. Three different volume fractions of SiC particles, precisely 10%, 15%, and 25%, are investigated in a composite under uniaxial tensile loading. The tensile behavior of Al-SiC composites is evaluated under two loading directions, considering both cases with and without diffusion effects. The results show that diffusion increases the ultimate tensile strength of the Al-SiC composite, particularly for the 15% SiC volume fraction. Regarding the shape of the SiC particles considered in this research, the strength of the composite varies in different directions. Specifically, the ultimate strength of the Al-SiC composite with 25% SiC reached 11.29 GPa in one direction, and 6.63 GPa in another, demonstrating the material's anisotropic mechanical behavior when diffusion effects are considered. Young's modulus shows negligible change in the presence of diffusion. Furthermore, diffusion improves toughness in Al-SiC composites, resulting in higher values compared to those without diffusion, as evidenced by the 25% SiC volume fraction composite (2.086 GPa) versus 15% (0.863 GPa) and 10% (1.296 GPa) SiC volume fractions. This study comprehensively investigates Al2O3′s mechanical properties, focusing on fracture toughness, surface energy, Young's modulus, and crack propagation. The density functional theory (DFT) is employed to model the vacancies in Al2O3, providing essential insights into this material's structural stability and defect formation. Defanging equipment layout in multi-floor satellites consists of two primary tasks: (i) allocating the equipment to the satellite's layers and (ii) placing the equipment in each layer individually. In reviewing the previous literature in this field, firstly, the issue of assigning equipment to layers is observed in a few articles, and regarding the layout, the non-overlapping constraint has always been a challenge, particularly for components that do not have a circular cross-section. In addition to presenting a heuristic method for allocating equipment to different layers of the satellite, this article presents a robust flexible programming model (RFPM) for the placement of equipment at different layers, taking into account the inherent flexibility of the equipment in terms of placement and the subject of uncertainty. This model is based on the existing uncertainty between the distances between pieces of cuboid equipment, which has not been addressed in any of the previous research, and by comparing its outputs with cases from past studies, we demonstrate a significantly higher efficiency related to placing the equipment and meeting the limit of non-overlapping constraints between the equipment. Finally, it would be possible to reduce the design time in the conceptual and preparatory stages, as well as the satellite's overall size, while still satisfying other constraints such as stability and thermal limitations, moments of inertia and center of gravity. This paper presents the results of laboratory tests of CFRP (carbon fiber-reinforced polymer) laminates, which allowed the development of numerical material models. The obtained data were used in a further stage to perform numerical simulations of four variants of medical tabletops, differing, among other features, in the shape of the cross-section. Maximum deflections and effort in the composite material were analyzed. The final step was to perform a laboratory test for one of the tabletop versions, the results of which confirmed the correctness of the numerical calculations. Modeling metal matrix composites in finite element software requires incorporating a cohesive zone model (CZM) to represent the interface between the constituent materials. The CZM determines the behavior of traction–separation (T–S) in this region. Specifically, when a diffusion zone is formed due to heat treatment, it becomes challenging to determine experimentally the equivalent mechanical properties of the interface. Additionally, understanding the influence of heat treatment and the creation of a diffusion zone on the T–S law is crucial. In this study, the molecular dynamics approach was employed to investigate the effect of the diffusion region formation, resulting from heat treatment, on the T–S law at the interface of a SiC/Al composite in tensile, shear, and mixed-mode loadings. It was found that the formation of a diffusion layer led to an increase in tensile and shear strengths and work of separation compared with the interfaces without heat treatment. However, the elastic and shear moduli were not significantly affected by the creation of the diffusion layer. Moreover, the numerical findings indicated that the shear strength in the diffusion region was higher when compared with the shear strength of the { 111 } slip plane within the fcc aluminum component of the composite material. Therefore, in the diffusion region, crack propagation did not occur in the pure shear loading case; however, shear sliding was observed at the aluminum atomic layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Friction stir welding (FSW) is a manufacturing process that many industries have adopted to join metals in a solid state, resulting in unique properties. However, studying aspects like temperature distribution, stress distribution, and material flow experimentally is challenging due to severe plastic deformation in the weld zone. Therefore, numerical methods are utilized to investigate these parameters and gain a better understanding of the FSW process. Numerical models are employed to simulate material flow, temperature distribution, and stress state during welding. This allows for the identification of potential defect-prone zones. This paper presents a comprehensive review of research activities and advancements in numerical analysis techniques specifically designed for friction stir welding, with a focus on their applicability to component manufacturing. The paper begins by examining various types of numerical methods and modeling techniques used in FSW analysis, including finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, and other simulation approaches. The advantages and limitations of each method are discussed, providing insights into their suitability for FSW simulations. The equivalent characteristics of the materials' interfaces are known to impact the overall mechanical properties of ceramic–metal composites significantly. One technological method that has been suggested is raising the temperature of the liquid metal to improve the weak wettability of ceramic particles with liquid metals. Therefore, as the first step, it is necessary to produce the diffusion zone at the interface by heating the system and maintaining it at a preset temperature to develop the cohesive zone model of the interface using mode I and mode II fracture tests. This study uses the molecular dynamics method to study the interdiffusion at the interface of α-Al2O3/AlSi12. The hexagonal crystal structure of aluminum oxide with the Al- and O-terminated interfaces with AlSi12 are considered. A single diffusion couple is used for each system to determine the average main and cross ternary interdiffusion coefficients. In addition, the effect of temperature and the termination type on the interdiffusion coefficients is examined. The results demonstrate that the thickness of the interdiffusion zone is proportional to the annealing temperature and time, and Al- and O-terminated interfaces exhibit similar interdiffusion properties. The increasing popularity of additive manufacturing technologies in the prototyping and building industry requires the application of novel, improved composite materials. In this paper, we propose the use of a novel 3D printing cement-based composite material with natural, granulated cork, and additional reinforcement using a continuous polyethylene interlayer net combined with polypropylene fibre reinforcement. Our assessment of different physical and mechanical properties of the used materials during the 3D printing process and after curing verified the applicability of the new composite. The composite exhibited orthotropic properties, and the compressive toughness in the direction of layer stacking was lower than that perpendicular to it, by 29.8% without net reinforcement, 42.6% with net reinforcement, and 42.9% with net reinforcement and an additional freeze–thaw test. The use of the polymer net as a continuous reinforcement led to decreased compressive toughness, lowering it on average by 38.5% for the stacking direction and 23.8% perpendicular to the stacking direction. However, the net reinforcement additionally lowered slumping and elephant's foot effects. Moreover, the net reinforcement added residual strength, which allowed for the continuous use of the composite material after the failure of the brittle material. A density functional theory (DFT) calculation is carried out in this work to investigate the effect of vacancies on the behavior of Al(111)/6H SiC composites. Generally, DFT simulations with appropriate interface models can be an acceptable alternative to experimental methods. We developed two modes for Al/SiC superlattices: C-terminated and Si-terminated interface configurations. C and Si vacancies reduce interfacial adhesion near the interface, while Al vacancies have little effect. Supercells are stretched vertically along the z-direction to obtain tensile strength. Stress–strain diagrams illustrate that the tensile properties of the composite can be improved by the presence of a vacancy, particularly on the SiC side, compared to a composite without a vacancy. Determining the interfacial fracture toughness plays a pivotal role in evaluating the resistance of materials to failure. The fracture toughness of Al/SiC is calculated using the first principal calculations in this paper. Young's modulus (E) and surface energy (Ɣ) is calculated to obtain the fracture toughness (KIC). Young's modulus is higher for C-terminated configurations than for Si-terminated configurations. Surface energy plays a dominant role in determining the fracture toughness process. Friction Stir Extrusion (FSE), the focus of this research, is a process that has tremendous potential for shaping and improving the mechanical properties of the final product as well as the mechanical alloying. In this study, a cylindrical sample of LM13 aluminum, to which silicon powder is added, is extruded by the penetration of a tool and takes the shape of a tube. The microstructure of the aluminum tube produced is studied using a light microscope. Various tests, including compression and wear tests, are performed to evaluate the wear and mechanical properties of the tubes produced. Additionally, the process is simulated using the finite element method (FEM), and the strain and temperature distributions in the tubes are examined to understand the impact of tool advancing speed better. The strain and temperature are highest on the inner surface, where the tubes meet the tool. Moreover, as the advancing speed increases from 25 to 40 mm/min, the maximum temperature in the tubes increases from 350 to 400 °C. The surface quality of the samples is directly related to the advancing speed, so the surface quality improves as the advancing speed increases. The results obtained from the compression and wear tests show that the compression strength has increased by about 17%, and the wear resistance has improved by about 20%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As one of the most widely used building materials, concrete has a dominantly brittle or quasi-brittle behavior. Adding fibers to concrete affects its ductility behavior as well as some mechanical properties. Finding the relationship between the addition of fibers and the change in thickness of laboratory test samples made of concrete can help in designing the optimal thickness of real concrete layers (especially concrete pavements) to withstand dynamic loads. The purpose of this research is to provide an experimental model for investigating the effect of concrete specimen size, or the thickness effect of concrete sample, on the fatigue life of concrete. Accordingly, several concrete beams with three thicknesses (80, 100 and 150 mm), constant width, and two lengths (120 mm and 450 mm) were manufactured with fiber percentages of 0 and 4% by fraction volume. The employed fiber was twisted macro synthetic fiber. After curing for 28 days, the samples were subjected to fatigue loading at three stress levels until the onset of failure and cracking stage. Here, the experimental model of the relationship between the number of loading cycles, the stress level and the thickness of the sample is presented. The results show that increasing the specimen thickness and fiber content can enhance the fatigue life of concrete up to 68%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mechanical properties of ceramic–metal nanocomposites are greatly affected by the equivalent properties of the interface of materials. In this study, the effect of vacancy in SiC on the interdiffusion of SiC/Al interfaces is investigated using the molecular dynamics method. The SiC reinforcements exist in the whisker and particulate forms. To this end, cubic and hexagonal SiC lattice polytypes with the Si- and C-terminated interfaces with Al are considered as two samples of metal matrix nanocomposites. The average main and cross-interdiffusion coefficients are determined using a single diffusion couple for each system. The interdiffusion coefficients of the defective SiC/Al are compared with the defect-free SiC/Al system. The effects of temperature, annealing time, and vacancy on the self- and interdiffusion coefficients are investigated. The most frequently used construction material in buildings is concrete exhibiting a brittle behaviour. Adding fibers to concrete can improve its ductility and mechanical properties. To this end, a laboratory study was conducted to present an experimental model for the specimens' size effect of on macro-synthetic fiber-reinforced concrete using variations in fracture energy. Composite concrete beams with different thicknesses and widths were made and tested under mode I to obtain (1) fracture toughness, (2) fracture energy, and (3) critical stress intensity factor values. Results indicated that by increasing the thickness and the width, fracture toughness and fracture energy were enhanced. Moreover, increasing the thickness and width of the beam led to critical stress intensity factors enhancement respectively by 35.01–41.43% and 7.77–8.09%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The mechanical properties of the SiC/Al interface are crucial in estimating the overall strength of this ceramic-metal composite. The present work investigates the interdiffusion at the SiC/Al interface using molecular dynamics simulations. One cubic and one hexagonal SiC with a higher probability of orientations in contact with Al are examined as two samples of metal-matrix nanocomposites with whisker and particulate reinforcements. These reinforcements with the Si- and C-terminated surfaces of the SiC/Al interfaces are also studied. The average main and cross-interdiffusion coefficients are evaluated using a single diffusion couple for each system. The effect of temperature and annealing time are analysed on the self- and interdiffusion coefficients. Silicon carbide foam is a material that can be used as reinforcement of interpenetrated composites. This paper presents an analysis of such a foam subjected to low and fast compression. The analysis is performed using the peridynamics (PD) method. This approach allows for an evaluation of failure modes and such effects of microcracks nucleation, their growth, and, finally, fragmentation. Furthermore, the material appears to behave qualitatively and quantitatively differently while subjected to low- and high-speed steel piston movement. Under slow compression case, damage appears in the entire specimen, but the shape of the structure is not changing significantly, whereas during the fast compression the sample is dynamically fragmented. The issue of image completion has been developed considerably over the last two decades, and many computational strategies have been proposed to fill-in missing regions in an incomplete image. When the incomplete image contains many small-sized irregular missing areas, a good alternative seems to be the matrix or tensor decomposition algorithms that yield low-rank approximations. However, this approach uses heuristic rank adaptation techniques, especially for images with many details. To tackle the obstacles of low-rank completion methods, we propose to model the incomplete images with overlapping blocks of Tucker decomposition representations where the factor matrices are determined by a hybrid version of the Gaussian radial basis function and polynomial interpolation. The experiments, carried out for various image completion and resolution up-scaling problems, demonstrate that our approach considerably outperforms the baseline and state-of-the-art low-rank completion methods. This study presents a description of the new technology for producing external or internal layers made of different powders mixed with epoxy resin, which can perform various functions as a protection against impact, erosion, or elevated temperatures as well as provide interlayers during the manufacturing of a ceramic protective barrier by air plasma spraying (APS) on the PMC substrate made of carbon–epoxy. Six types of powders (copper, quartz sand, Al2O3, aluminum, crystalline silica, and microballoon) were used to manufacture (120 °C) different kinds of protective layers (PLs), perfectly joined with the PMCs, in one single autoclave process. The two-layered specimens (2 × 25 × 110 mm) were subjected to a three-point bending (3-PB) displacement-controlled deformation process to determine the critical values of deformations at which the PLs can work safely without being cracked or delaminated. The tests were performed up to the final failure, observing various damage and cracking phenomena. Finally, the numerical simulations were carried out using the representative volume element (RVE) model of the most efforted central parts of the samples to determine the effect of powder grain diameter and resin content on the elastic properties and damage growth of the newly proposed multifunctional PLs. The stress concentrations and damage processes, including cracking and delamination, were analyzed in the whole two-layered system. This paper presents the results of an experimental study into single-lap joints. One part of the joint was made as a 3D printed polymer and had cylindrical tenons, while the other part was made of an aluminium flat bar having mortises whose diameter and distribution corresponded to the polymer tenons. In addition to the mechanical joint, a layer of double-sided VHB (Very High Bond) adhesive tape was also placed in the lap, thus creating a hybrid joint. In total, 80 specimens were made, which were divided into four groups: A—specimens with one tenon of different diameters, B—specimens with different number of tenons of the same diameter, C—specimens characterised by multi-stage operation and R—reference specimens, connected only by double-sided adhesive tape. The joints were subjected to uniaxial tensile tests. The force–displacement characteristics obtained and the energy required, up to the point of the failure of the joints, have been analysed in this paper. The effect of molybdenum additions on the phases, microstructures, and mechanical properties of pre-alloyed Ti6Al4V was studied through the spark plasma sintering technique. Ti6Al4V-xMo (where x = 0, 2, 4, 6 wt.% of Mo) alloys were developed, and the sintered compacts were characterized in terms of their phase composition, microstructure, and mechanical properties. The results show that the equiaxed primary alpha and Widmänstatten (alpha + beta) microstructure in pre-alloyed Ti6Al4V is transformed into a duplex and globular model with the increasing content of Mo from 0 to 6%. The changing pattern of the microstructure of the sample strongly influences the properties of the material. The solid solution hardening element such as Mo enhances mechanical properties such as yield strength, ultimate tensile strength, ductility, and hardness compared with the pre-alloyed Ti6Al4V alloy. The potential of applying geopolymerization to a wide range of solid industrial waste and by-products is of great interest. In this research, the physical and mechanical properties of fly ash (FA)-based geopolymer concrete (GC), compared to those of cement concrete (CC), were studied. Three GCs with different content of FA and three appropriate CCs were designed, prepared, tested and evaluated. The results were compared with the requirements of Standards EN 206-1 and EN 1992-1-1. It was shown that in some cases minor adjustments of the regulations are needed, while in other cases complete revision is required. GC indicated competitive compressive strength compared to CC, tensile strength within the limits specified by Eurocode 2 for CC and modulus of elasticity about 50% less than that of CC. The ratio of binder (FA) to aggregates seems to have a significant effect on the properties of GC. The concrete with 750 kg/m3 FA seems to be the best choice taking into consideration both engineering and environmental criteria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The high-volume fraction SiC/Al composite is the new type of electronic packaging material, which plays an important role in the field of high-power integrated circuits. In this study, SiC/Al composites with high-volume fraction of SiC particles were prepared by vacuum pressure infiltration. The influence of SiC particle size and NH4HCO3 on the pores in the preform was explored, aiming to accurately adjust the volume fraction of SiC to meet the thermal performance requirements in different fields. In addition, the preform was infiltrated with different Al alloys, and the relationship between the porosity and thermal conductivity of SiC/Al was studied. For the SiC preform, the volume fraction of SiC can be adjusted regularly when 12 μm and 100 μm SiC particles are mixed in different proportions, and the volume fraction reaches the maximum when the proportion of coarse particles is about 77%. NH4HCO3 is conducive to the connectivity of pores in the preform, and about 40 vol.% of NH4HCO3 can effectively increase the porosity of the preform. Thermal conductivity is sensitive to the porosity of composites, especially in the range of 2.5–4.5%. A simple application of the Hasselman–Johnson model and a new thermal conductivity model, λd, established in this article, offer a good agreement with the experimental results. As Nickel (Ni) is the base of important Ni-based superalloys for high-temperature applications, it is important to determine the creep behavior of its nano-polycrystals. The nano-tensile properties and creep behavior of nickel polycrystalline nanopillars are investigated employing molecular dynamics simulations under different temperatures, stresses, and grain sizes. The mechanisms behind the creep behavior are analyzed in detail by calculating the stress exponents, grain boundary exponents, and activation energies. The novel results in this work are summarized in a deformation mechanism map and are in good agreement with Ashby's experimental results for pure Ni. Through the deformation diagram, dislocation creep dominates the creep process when applying a high stress, while grain boundary sliding prevails at lower stress levels. These two mechanisms could also be coupled together for a low-stress but a high-temperature creep simulation. In this work, the dislocation creep is clearly observed and discussed in detail. Through analyzing the activation energies, vacancy diffusion begins to play an important role in enhancing the grain boundary creep in the creep process when the temperature is above 1000 K. Due to its excellent adsorption and humidity control function, bamboo charcoal (BC) has often been mixed with polypropylene (PP) to produce PP/BC composites for interior paneling applications. However, due to the poor foaming quality of PP, PP/BC composites suffer as a result of their high density, which limits their scope of use. Here, to improve its foaming quality, PP was modified with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA), and then the EVA-modified PP (E-PP) was mixed with different contents of BC (0 wt.%–50 wt.%), as well as foaming agent (Azodicarbonamide, AC) and its auxiliaries (ZnO, Znst), in a twin-screw extruder, followed by hot-pressing at high temperature to obtain foamed E-PP/BC composites. The resulting composites showed good porosity and pore distribution with an increase of BC content by up to 20%. Further increase in the BC content seemed to cause the foaming performance to decrease significantly. The product density and adsorption rate increased, while the mechanical strength decreased with increasing BC content. At a BC content of 40 wt.%, the foamed E-PP/BC composite showed the best combined performance, with a density of 0.90 g/cm3, 24-h formaldehyde adsorption rate of 0.48, and bending strength of 11.59 MPa. One of the most relevant geometrical factors defining an adhesive joint is the thickness of the adhesive layer. The influence of the adhesive layer thickness on the joint strength has not been precisely understood so far. This article presents simplified analytical formulas for adhesive joint strength and adhesive joint coefficient for different joint loading, assuming, inter alia: linear-elastic strain of adhesive layer, elastic strain of adherends and only one kind of stress in adhesive. On the basis of the presented adhesive joint coefficient, the butt joint was selected for the tests of the influence of adhesive thickness on the adhesive failure stress. The tests showed clearly that with an increase in the thickness of the tested adhesive layers (up to about 0.17 mm), the value of their failure stress decreased quasi linearly. Furthermore, some adhesive joints (inter alia subjected to shearing) may display the optimum value of the thickness of the adhesive layer in terms of the strength of the joint. Thus, the aim of this work was to explain the phenomenon of optimal adhesive layer thickness in some types of adhesive joints. The verifying test was conducted with use of single simple lap joints. Finally, with the use of the FE method, the authors were able to obtain stresses in the adhesive layers of lap joints for loads that destroyed that joints in the experiment, and the FEM-calculated failure stresses for lap joints were compared with the adhesive failure stresses determined experimentally using the butt specimens. Numerical calculations were conducted with the use of the continuum mechanics approach (stress-based), and the non-linear behavior of the adhesive and plastic strain of the adherends was taken into account. Black poplar (Populus nigra L.) was thermally modified in nitrogen atmosphere. The effects of the modification process on poplar wood were evaluated for temperatures: 160 °C, 190 °C, and 220 °C applied for 2 h; and 160 °C and 190 °C for 6 h. The percentual impact of temperature and time of modification on the properties of modified wood was analysed. The study permitted the identification correlations between the chemical composition and selected physical properties of thermally modified poplar wood. The dimensional stability of poplar wood was improved after thermal modification in nitrogen. The higher the temperature of modification, the lower the equilibrium moisture content (EMC) of black poplar. At the temperature of 220 °C, EMC was two times lower than the EMC of non-modified black poplar. It is also possible to reduce the dimensional changes of wood two-fold (at the modification temperature of 220 °C), both in radial and tangential directions, independently of the acclimatization conditions (from 34% to 98% relative humidity, RH). Similar correlations have been found for wood that has been soaked in water. Higher modification temperatures and longer processing times contributed to a lower swelling anisotropy (SA). Diamond-silicon carbide (SiC) polycrystalline composite blends are studied using a computational approach combining molecular dynamics (MD) simulations for obtaining grain boundary (GB) fracture properties and phase field mechanics for capturing polycrystalline deformation and failure. An authentic microstructure, reconstructed from experimental lattice diffraction data with locally refined discretization in GB regions, is used to probe effects of local heterogeneities on material response in phase field simulations. The nominal microstructure consists of larger diamond and SiC (cubic polytype) grains, a matrix of smaller diamond grains and nanocrystalline SiC, and GB layers encasing the larger grains. These layers may consist of nanocrystalline SiC, diamond, or graphite, where volume fractions of each phase are varied within physically reasonable limits in parametric studies. Distributions of fracture energies from MD tension simulations are used in the phase field energy functional for SiC-SiC and SiC-diamond interfaces, where grain boundary geometries are obtained from statistical analysis of lattice orientation data on the real microstructure. An elastic homogenization method is used to account for distributions of second-phase graphitic inclusions as well as initial voids too small to be resolved individually in the continuum field discretization. In phase field simulations, SiC single crystals may twin, and all phases may fracture. The results of MD calculations show mean strengths of diamond-SiC interfaces are much lower than those of SiC-SiC GBs. In phase field simulations, effects on peak aggregate stress and ductility from different GB fracture energy realizations with the same mean fracture energy and from different random microstructure orientations are modest. Results of phase field simulations show unconfined compressive strength is compromised by diamond-SiC GBs, graphitic layers, graphitic inclusions, and initial porosity. Explored ranges of porosity and graphite fraction are informed by physical observations and constrained by accuracy limits of elastic homogenization. Modest reductions in strength and energy absorption are witnessed for microstructures with 4% porosity or 4% graphite distributed uniformly among intergranular matrix regions. Despite their favorable physical and mechanical properties for structural use, tropical woods, such as Iroko (Milicia excelsa), present knowledge gaps to be filled mainly about their mechanical characterization, which currently limit their use or result in under- or overdimensioned structural elements. Visual classification, one of the most used methods for characterizing wood, is inaccurate in the case of Iroko due to the wide variety of geographical locations in which this species can be found. In addition, mechanical characterization using test pieces with structural dimensions leads to high and impractical costs. In this context, this study aims to verify the mechanical properties of Iroko (imported from the Republic of the Congo) from small size specimens, a process that is currently standardized only for softwoods, and to verify the correlation of different properties through bending properties and ultrasound tests. Prior to the bending tests, the speed of propagation of ultrasonic waves was measured using the direct method. Ti(C,N)-reinforced alumina-zirconia composites with different ratios of C to N in titanium carbonitride solid solutions, such as Ti(C0.3,N0.7) (C:N = 30:70) and Ti(C0.5,N0.5) (C:N = 50:50), were tested to improve their mechanical properties. Spark plasma sintering (SPS) with temperatures ranging from 1600 °C to 1675 °C and pressureless sintering (PS) with a higher temperature of 1720 °C were used to compare results. The following mechanical and physical properties were determined: Vickers hardness, Young's modulus, apparent density, wear resistance, and fracture toughness. A composite with the addition of Ti(C0.5,N0.5)n nanopowder exhibited the highest Vickers hardness of over 19.0 GPa, and its fracture toughness was at 5.0 Mpa·m1/2. A composite with the Ti(C0.3,N0.7) phase was found to have lower values of Vickers hardness (by about 10%), friction coefficient, and specific wear rate of disc (Wsd) compared to the composite with the addition of Ti(C0.5,N0.5). The Vickers hardness values slightly decreased (from 5% to 10%) with increasing sintering temperature. The mechanical properties of the samples sintered using PS were lower than those of the samples that were spark plasma sintered. This research on alumina–zirconia composites with different ratios of C to N in titanium carbonitride solid solution Ti(C,N), sintered using an unconventional SPS method, reveals the effect of C/N ratios on improving mechanical properties of tested composites. The interactions between dislocations (dislocations and deformation twins) and boundaries (grain boundaries, twin boundaries and phase interfaces) during deformation at ambient temperatures are reviewed with focuses on interaction behaviors, boundary resistances and energies during the interactions, transmission mechanisms, grain size effects and other primary influencing factors. The structure of boundaries, interactions between dislocations and boundaries in coarse-grained, ultrafine-grained and nano-grained metals during deformation at ambient temperatures are summarized, and the advantages and drawbacks of different in-situ techniques are briefly discussed based on experimental and simulation results. The latest studies as well as fundamental concepts are presented with the aim that this paper can serve as a reference in the interactions between dislocations and boundaries during deformation. In the case of protection of transportation systems, the optimization of the shield is of practical interest to reduce the weight of such components and thus increase the payload or reduce the fuel consumption. As far as metal shields are concerned, some investigations based on numerical simulations showed that a multi-layered configuration made of layers of different metals could be a promising solution to reduce the weight of the shield. However, only a few experimental studies on this subject are available. The aim of this study is therefore to discuss whether or not a monolithic shield can be substituted by a double-layered configuration manufactured from two different metals and if such a configuration can guarantee the same perforation resistance at a lower weight. In order to answer this question, the performance of a ballistic shield constituted of a layer of high-strength steel and a layer of an aluminum alloy impacted by an armor piercing projectile was investigated in experimental tests. Furthermore, an axisymmetric finite element model was developed. The effect of the strain rate hardening parameter C and the thermal softening parameter m of the Johnson–Cook constitutive model was investigated. The numerical model was used to understand the perforation process and the energy dissipation mechanism inside the target. It was found that if the high-strength steel plate is used as a front layer, the specific ballistic energy increases by 54% with respect to the monolithic high-strength steel plate. Ultralight sandwich constructions with corrugated channel cores (i.e., periodic fluid-through wavy passages) are envisioned to possess multifunctional attributes: simultaneous load-carrying and heat dissipation via active cooling. Titanium alloy (Ti-6Al-4V) corrugated-channel-cored sandwich panels (3CSPs) with thin face sheets and core webs were fabricated via the technique of selective laser melting (SLM) for enhanced shear resistance relative to other fabrication processes such as vacuum brazing. Four-point bending responses of as-fabricated 3CSP specimens, including bending resistance and initial collapse modes, were experimentally measured. The bending characteristics of the 3CSP structure were further explored using a combined approach of analytical modeling and numerical simulation based on the method of finite elements (FE). Both the analytical and numerical predictions were validated against experimental measurements. Collapse mechanism maps of the 3CSP structure were subsequently constructed using the analytical model, with four collapse modes considered (face-sheet yielding, face-sheet buckling, core yielding, and core buckling), which were used to evaluate how its structural geometry affects its collapse initiation mode. Adhesive bonding are becoming increasingly important in civil and mechanical engineering, in the field of mobile applications such as aircraft or automotive. Adhesive joints offer many advantages such as low weight, uniform stress distribution, vibration damping properties or the possibility of joining different materials. The paper presents the results of numerical modeling and the use of neural networks in the analysis of dual adhesive single-lap joints subjected to a uniaxial tensile test. The dual adhesive joint was created through the use of adhesives with various parameters in terms of stiffness and strength. In the axis of the overlap, there was a point bonded joint characterized by greater stiffness and strength, and on the outside, there was a bonded joint limited by the edges of the overlap and characterized by lower stiffness and strength. It is an innovative solution for joining technology and the influence of such parameters as the thickness of one of the adherends, the radius of the point bonded joint and the material parameters of both adhesive layers were analyzed. The joint is characterized by a two-stage degradation process, i.e., after the damage of the rigid adhesive, the flexible adhesive ensures the integrity of the entire joint. For numerical modeling, the Finite Element Method (FEM) and cohesive elements was used, which served as input data to an Artificial Neural Network (ANN). In this study, a novel hybrid surrogate machine learning model based on a feedforward neural network (FNN) and one step secant algorithm (OSS) was developed to predict the load-bearing capacity of concrete-filled steel tube columns (CFST), whereas the OSS was used to optimize the weights and bias of the FNN for developing a hybrid model (FNN-OSS). For achieving this goal, an experimental database containing 422 instances was firstly gathered from the literature and used to develop the FNN-OSS algorithm. The input variables in the database contained the geometrical characteristics of CFST columns, and the mechanical properties of two CFST constituent materials, i.e., steel and concrete. Thereafter, the selection of the appropriate parameters of FNN-OSS was performed and evaluated by common statistical measurements, for instance, the coefficient of determination (R2), root mean square error (RMSE), and mean absolute error (MAE). In the next step, the prediction capability of the best FNN-OSS structure was evaluated in both global and local analyses, showing an excellent agreement between actual and predicted values of the load-bearing capacity. Finally, an in-depth investigation of the performance and limitations of FNN-OSS was conducted from a structural engineering point of view. Polymer matrix composites (PMC), despite their many advantages, have limited use at elevated temperatures. To expand the scope of their uses, it becomes necessary to use thermal barrier coatings (TBC). In addition to elevated temperatures, composite structures, and thus TBC barriers, can be exposed to damage from impacts of foreign objects. Therefore, before using the thermal barrier in practice, knowledge about its behavior under high-speed loads is necessary. The paper presents results for samples with the PMC/TBC system subjected to dynamic compression using a split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB). The substrate was made of CFRP (carbon reinforced polymer) with epoxy matrix and twill fabric. TBC was made of ceramic mat saturated by commercial hardener from Vitcas company. The tests were carried out at ambient temperature and elevated temperature—55 °C and 90 °C. Tests at ambient temperature were carried out for three pressure levels: 1, 1.5, and 2 bar. Only the pressure of 1 bar was used for the elevated temperature. Studies have shown that the limit load is 1 bar for ambient temperature. At 1.5 bar, cracks occurred in the TBC structure. Increased temperature also adversely affects the TBC barrier strength and it is damaged at a pressure of 1 bar. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Using the finite element code ABAQUS and the user-defined material utilities UMAT and UMATHT, a solid brick graded finite element is developed for three-dimensional (3D) modeling of free vibrations of thermally loaded functionally gradient material (FGM) sandwich plates. The mechanical and thermal material properties of the FGM sandwich plates are assumed to vary gradually in the thickness direction, according to a power-law fraction distribution. Benchmark problems are firstly considered to assess the performance and accuracy of the proposed 3D graded finite element. Comparisons with the reference solutions revealed high efficiency and good capabilities of the developed element for the 3D simulations of thermomechanical and vibration responses of FGM sandwich plates. The manufacturing technology for adhesive joints is not yet fully optimized, as proved by a large number of papers that have been published in recent years. Future studies on innovative techniques for fabricating adhesive joints should investigate the influence of parameters such as: (1) The shape of adhesive protrusion, (2) lap dimensions, and (3) cohesive layer reduction in the most efforted regions of the joint. With the application of additional mechanical connectors (e.g., rivets, screws, and welds) in adhesive joints, new hybrid connections can be fabricated. The number of publications in this new field is still relatively small. To fill the gap, this paper presents the results of a numerical analysis of different single lap geometries in (1) pure adhesive and (2) hybrid joints. A total of 13 different models with the same surface area of the adhesive layer were considered. In the case of hybrid joints, the adhesive surface before the application of mechanical connectors was assumed to be the same in every tested case. The numerical analysis of pure adhesive and hybrid joints revealed that the differences in strength led to a 30% decrease in the load capacity of these joints. Metal-ceramic composite (MCC) materials can be used for manufacturing high-responsibility structures such as jet engines or cutting tools. One example of these materials is a two-phase wolfram carbide (WC) and cobalt (Co) composite. This MCC is a combination of hard WC grains with a Co metallic ductile binder. The resulting microstructure is a combination of two phases with significantly different mechanical behaviors. In this study, we investigate impact conditions, starting with an illustrative example of the Taylor impact bar where—although the process is very rapid—the equivalent plastic strain and temperature are higher in the adiabatic solution than those in the coupled solution. On exposing the WC/Co composite with a metallic binder to impact loading, heat is generated by plastic deformation. If the process is fast enough, the problem can be treated as adiabatic. However, a more common situation is that the process is slower, and the heat is generated in the ductile metallic binders. As a result, the associated grains are heated due to the conduction effect. Consequently, the process should be treated as coupled. When the impact is applied over a short time period, maximum temperatures are significantly lower if the process is analyzed as coupled rather than as adiabatic. While a plane is maneuvering before take-off and landing, some solid particles (e.g. sand, dust, soil) may get into the engine with air. A vast majority of them are stopped by the compressor blades, but the smaller ones can get into a hot part of the engine and cause erosion. A pneumatic laboratory work station was built in order to investigate the impact of foreign object damage (FOD) particles with a diameter of 4 mm. Cylindrical samples with a diameter of 30 mm were used, each having a thermal barrier coating (TBC) deposited by the air plasma spray (APS) method with the application of yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ). Sample aging was performed for four ranges: 48, 89, 185, and 353 h at the temperature of 1000 °C. After aging, samples were subjected to impacts made with different energies. Various damage images were captured depending on the aging time and impact velocity. Numerical studies led to the determination of how the incidence angle of a foreign object and the blade temperature affected the number of elements that became damaged during impact. It was found that impacts perpendicular to the surface were the most dangerous, while heating the blade to the operating temperature resulted in a 27% decrease in the number of elements damaged during impact when compared to the cold blade.
