In trainable wireless communications systems, the use of deep learning for over-the-air training aims to address the discontinuity in backpropagation learning caused by the channel environment. The primary methods supporting this learning procedure either directly approximate the backpropagation gradients using techniques derived from reinforcement learning, or explicitly model the channel environment by training a generative channel model. In both cases, over-the-air training of transmitter and receiver requires a feedback channel to sound the channel environment and obtain measurements of the learning objective. The use of continuous feedback not only demands extra system resources but also makes the training process more susceptible to adversarial attacks. Conversely, opting for a feedback-free approach to train the models over the forward link, exclusively on the receiver side, could pose challenges to reliably end the training process without intermittent testing over the actual channel environment. In this article, we propose a novel method for the over-the-air training of wireless communication systems that does not require a feedback channel to train the transmitter and receiver. Random samples are transmitted through the channel environment to train a mixture density network to approximate the channel distribution on the receiver side of the network. The transmitter and receiver models are trained with the resulting channel model, and the transmitter can be deployed after training. We show that the block error rate measurements obtained with the simulated channel are suitable for monitoring as a stopping criterion during the training process. Wireless communications systems are traditionally designed by independently optimising signal processing functions based on a mathematical model. Deep learning-enabled communications have demonstrated end-to-end design by jointly optimising all components with respect to the communications environment. In the end-to-end approach, an assumed channel model is necessary to support training of the transmitter and receiver. This limitation has motivated recent work on over-the-air training to explore disjoint training for the transmitter and receiver without an assumed channel. These methods approximate the channel through a generative adversarial model or perform gradient approximation through reinforcement learning or similar methods. However, the generative adversarial model adds complexity by requiring an additional discriminator during training, while reinforcement learning methods require multiple forward passes to approximate the gradient and are sensitive to high variance in the error signal. A third, collaborative agent-based approach relies on an echo protocol to conduct training without channel assumptions. However, the coordination between agents increases the complexity and channel usage during training. In this article, we propose a simpler approach for disjoint training in which a local receiver model approximates the remote receiver model and is used to train the local transmitter. This simplified approach performs well under several different channel conditions, has equivalent performance to end-to-end training, and is well suited to adaptation to changing channel environments. In this paper, new probabilistic and dynamic (adaptive) strategies for creating multi-method ensembles based on the coral reef optimization with substrate layers (CRO-SL) algorithm are proposed. CRO-SL is an evolutionary-based ensemble approach that is able to combine different search procedures for a single population. In this work, two different probabilistic strategies to improve the algorithm are analyzed. First, the probabilistic CRO-SL (PCRO-SL) is presented, which substitutes the substrates in the CRO-SL population with tags associated with each individual. Each tag represents a different operator which will modify the individual in the reproduction phase. In each generation of the algorithm, the tags are randomly assigned to the individuals with similar probabilities, obtaining this way an ensemble that sees more intense changes with the application of different operators to a given individual than CRO-SL. Second, the dynamic probabilistic CRO-SL (DPCRO-SL) is presented, in which the probability of tag assignment is modified during the evolution of the algorithm, depending on the quality of the solutions generated in each substrate. Thus, the best substrates in the search process will be assigned higher probabilities than those which showed worse performance during the search. The performances of the proposed probabilistic and dynamic ensembles were tested for different optimization problems, including benchmark functions and a real application of wind-turbine-layout optimization, comparing the results obtained with those of existing algorithms in the literature. In this paper, we propose different explicable forecasting approaches, based on inductive and evolutionary decision rules, for extreme low-visibility events prediction. Explicability of the processes given by the rules is in the core of the proposal. We propose two different methodologies: first, we apply the PRIM algorithm and evolution to obtain induced and evolved rules, and subsequently these rules and boxes of rules are used as a possible simpler alternative to ML/DL classifiers. Second, we propose to integrate the information provided by the induced/evolved rules in the ML/DL techniques, as extra inputs, in order to enrich the complex ML/DL models. Colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) have been proposed to obtain intermediate band (IB) materials. The IB solar cell can absorb sub-band-gap photons via an isolated IB within the gap, generating extra electron-hole pairs that increase the current without degrading the voltage, as has been demonstrated experimentally for real cells. In this paper, we model the electron hopping transport (HT) as a network embedded in space and energy so that a node represents the first excited electron state localized in a CQD while a link encodes the Miller–Abrahams (MA) hopping rate for the electron to hop from one node (=state) to another, forming an "electron-HT network". Similarly, we model the hole-HT system as a network so that a node encodes the first hole state localized in a CQD while a link represents the MA hopping rate for the hole to hop between nodes, leading to a "hole-HT network". The associated network Laplacian matrices allow for studying carrier dynamics in both networks. Our simulations suggest that reducing both the carrier effective mass in the ligand and the inter-dot distance increases HT efficiency. Organic disordered semiconductors have a growing importance because of their low cost, mechanical flexibility, and multiple applications in thermoelectric devices, biosensors, and optoelectronic devices. Carrier transport consists of variable-range hopping between localized quantum states, which are disordered in both space and energy within the Gaussian disorder model. In this paper, we model an organic disordered semiconductor system as a network embedded in both space and energy so that a node represents a localized state while a link encodes the probability (or, equivalently, the Miller–Abrahams hopping rate) for carriers to hop between nodes. The associated network Laplacian matrix allows for the study of carrier dynamics using edge-centric random walks, in which links are activated by the corresponding carrier hopping rates. Our simulation work suggests that at room temperature the network exhibits a strong propensity for small-network nature, a beneficial property that in network science is related to the ease of exchanging information, particles, or energy in many different systems. However, this is not the case at low temperature. Our analysis suggests that there could be a parallelism between the well-known dependence of carrier mobility on temperature and the potential emergence of the small-world property with increasing temperature. Prediction problems in timed datasets related to human activities are especially difficult to solve, because of the specific characteristics and the scarce number of predictive (input) variables available to tackle these problems. In this paper, we try to find out whether Machine Learning (ML) approaches can be successfully applied to these problems. We deal with timed datasets with human activity patterns, in which the input variables are exclusively related to the day or type of day when the prediction is carried out and, usually, to the meteorology of those days. These problems with a marked human activity pattern frequently appear in mobility and traffic-related problems, delivery prediction (packets, food), and many other activities, usually in cities. We evaluate the performance in these problems of different ML methods such as artificial neural networks (multi-layer perceptrons, extreme learning machines) and support vector regression algorithms, together with an Analogue-type (KNN) approach, which serves as a baseline algorithm and provides information about when it is expected that ML approaches will fail, by looking for similar situations in the past. The considered ML algorithms are evaluated in four real prediction problems with human activity patterns, such as school absences, bike-sharing demand, parking occupation, and packets delivered in a post office. The results obtained show the good performance of the ML algorithms, revealing that they can deal with scarce information in all the problems considered. The results obtained have also revealed the importance of including meteorology as the input variables, showing that meteorology is frequently behind demand peaks or valleys in this kind of problem. The rapid development of computer science and telecommunications has brought new ways and practices to sport training. The artificial sport trainer, founded on computational intelligence algorithms, has gained momentum in the last years. However, artificial sport trainer usually suffers from a lack of automatisation in realization and control phases of the training. In this study, the Digital Twin is proposed as a framework for helping athletes, during realization of training sessions, to make the proper decisions in situations they encounter. The digital twin for artificial sport trainer is based on the cognitive model of humans. This concept has been applied to cycling, where a version of the system on a Raspberry Pi already exists. In this paper, a novel procedure for optimal design of geometrically nonlinear submerged arches is proposed. It is based on the Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layers algorithm, a multi-method ensemble evolutionary approach for solving optimization problems. A novel arch shape parameterization is combined with the Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layers algorithm. This new parameterization allows considering geometrical parameters in the design process, in addition to the reduction of the bending moment carried out by the classical design approach. The importance of considering the second-order behaviour of the arch structure is shown by different numerical experiments. Moreover, it is shown that the use of Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layers algorithm leads to nearly-optimal solutions, ensuring the stability of the structure, reducing the maximum absolute bending moment value, and complying with the serviceability structural restrictions. Featured Application: A novel textile U-shaped with concentric annular slot antenna prototype for LTE and 5G services has been described. In the ground plane, a meander slot has been introduced to reduce the antenna dimensions. A new multi-method metaheuristic algorithm, the Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layer CRO-SL, has been used to optimize the antenna parameters and improve its performance in the frequency bands of interest. A textile multi-band antenna for LTE and 5G communication services, composed by a rectangular microstrip patch, two concentric annular slots and a U-Shaped slot, is considered in this paper. In the ground plane, three sleeved meanders have been introduced to modify the surface current distribution, leading to a bandwidth improvement. The U-Shaped slot, the dual circular slots, and the meanders shape have been optimized by means of the Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layer algorithm (CRO-SL). This population-based meta-heuristic approach is a kind of ensemble algorithm for optimization (multi-method), in which different search operators are considered within the algorithm. We show that the CRO-SL is able to obtain a robust multi-band textile antenna, including LTE and 5G frequency bands. For the optimization process, the CRO-SL is guided by means of a fitness function obtained after the antenna simulation by a specific simulation software for electromagnetic analysis in the high frequency range. This paper proposes a low-profile textile-modified meander line Inverted-F Antenna (IFA) with variable width and spacing meanders, for Industrial Scientific Medical (ISM) 2.4-GHz Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN), optimized with a novel metaheuristic algorithm. Specifically, a metaheuristic known as Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layer (CRO-SL) is used to obtain an optimal antenna for sensor systems, which allows covering properly and resiliently the 2.4–2.45-GHz industrial scientific medical bandwidth. Flexible pad foam has been used to make the designed prototype with a 1.1-mm thickness. We have used a version of the algorithm that is able to combine different searching operators within a single population of solutions. This approach is ideal to deal with hard optimization problems, such as the design of the proposed meander line IFA. During the optimization phase with the CRO-SL, the proposed antenna has been simulated using CST Microwave Studio software, linked to the CRO-SL by means of MATLAB implementation and Visual Basic Applications (VBA) code. We fully describe the antenna design process, the adaptation of the CRO-SL approach to this problem and several practical aspects of the optimization and details on the algorithm’s performance. To validate the simulation results, we have constructed and measured two prototypes of the antenna, designed with the proposed algorithm. Wind Power Ramp Events (WPREs) are large fluctuations of wind power in a short time interval, which lead to strong, undesirable variations in the electric power produced by a wind farm. Its accurate prediction is important in the effort of efficiently integrating wind energy in the electric system, without affecting considerably its stability, robustness and resilience. In this paper, we tackle the problem of predicting WPREs by applying Machine Learning (ML) regression techniques. Our approach consists of using variables from atmospheric reanalysis data as predictive inputs for the learning machine, which opens the possibility of hybridizing numerical-physical weather models with ML techniques for WPREs prediction in real systems. Specifically, we have explored the feasibility of a number of state-of-the-art ML regression techniques, such as support vector regression, artificial neural networks (multi-layer perceptrons and extreme learning machines) and Gaussian processes to solve the problem. Furthermore, the ERA-Interim reanalysis from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts is the one used in this paper because of its accuracy and high resolution (in both spatial and temporal domains). Aiming at validating the feasibility of our predicting approach, we have carried out an extensive experimental work using real data from three wind farms in Spain, discussing the performance of the different ML regression tested in this wind power ramp event prediction problem. In this work, we describe an approach that allows for optimizing the structure of a smart grid (SG) with renewable energy (RE) generation against abnormal conditions (imbalances between generation and consumption, overloads or failures arising from the inherent SG complexity) by combining the complex network (CN) and evolutionary algorithm (EA) concepts. We propose a novel objective function (to be minimized) that combines cost elements, related to the number of electric cables, and several metrics that quantify properties that are beneficial for SGs (energy exchange at the local scale and high robustness and resilience). The optimized SG structure is obtained by applying an EA in which the chromosome that encodes each potential network (or individual) is the upper triangular matrix of its adjacency matrix. This allows for fully tailoring the crossover and mutation operators. We also propose a domain-specific initial population that includes both small-world and random networks, helping the EA converge quickly. The experimental work points out that the proposed method works well and generates the optimum, synthetic, small-world structure that leads to beneficial properties such as improving both the local energy exchange and the robustness. The optimum structure fulfills a balance between moderate cost and robustness against abnormal conditions. Our approach should be considered as an analysis, planning and decision-making tool to gain insight into smart grid structures so that the low level detailed design is carried out by using electrical engineering techniques. Classification problems and their corresponding solving approaches constitute one of the fields of machine learning. The application of classification schemes in Renewable Energy (RE) has gained significant attention in the last few years, contributing to the deployment, management and optimization of RE systems. The main objective of this paper is to review the most important classification algorithms applied to RE problems, including both classical and novel algorithms. The paper also provides a comprehensive literature review and discussion on different classification techniques in specific RE problems, including wind speed/power prediction, fault diagnosis in RE systems, power quality disturbance classification and other applications in alternative RE systems. In this way, the paper describes classification techniques and metrics applied to RE problems, thus being useful both for researchers dealing with this kind of problem and for practitioners of the field. This paper reviews the most relevant works that have investigated robustness in power grids using Complex Networks (CN) concepts. In this broad field there are two different approaches. The first one is based solely on topological concepts, and uses metrics such as mean path length, clustering coefficient, efficiency and betweenness centrality, among many others. The second, hybrid approach consists of introducing (into the CN framework) some concepts from Electrical Engineering (EE) in the effort of enhancing the topological approach, and uses novel, more efficient electrical metrics such as electrical betweenness, net-ability, and others. There is however a controversy about whether these approaches are able to provide insights into all aspects of real power grids. The CN community argues that the topological approach does not aim to focus on the detailed operation, but to discover the unexpected emergence of collective behavior, while part of the EE community asserts that this leads to an excessive simplification. Beyond this open debate it seems to be no predominant structure (scale-free, small-world) in high-voltage transmission power grids, the vast majority of power grids studied so far. Most of them have in common that they are vulnerable to targeted attacks on the most connected nodes and robust to random failure. In this respect there are only a few works that propose strategies to improve robustness such as intentional islanding, restricted link addition, microgrids and smart grids, for which novel studies suggest that small-world networks seem to be the best topology. We review the latest modeling techniques and propose new hybrid SAELSTM framework based on Deep Learning (DL) to construct prediction intervals for daily Global Solar Radiation (GSR) using the Manta Ray Foraging Optimization (MRFO) feature selection to select model parameters. Features are employed as potential inputs for Long Short-Term Memory and a seq2seq SAELSTM autoencoder Deep Learning (DL) system in the final GSR prediction. Six solar energy farms in Queensland, Australia are considered to evaluate the method with predictors from Global Climate Models and ground-based observation. Comparisons are carried out among DL models (i.e., Deep Neural Network) and conventional Machine Learning algorithms (i.e., Gradient Boosting Regression, Random Forest Regression, Extremely Randomized Trees, and Adaptive Boosting Regression). The hyperparameters are deduced with grid search, and simulations demonstrate that the DL hybrid SAELSTM model is accurate compared with the other models as well as the persistence methods. The SAELSTM model obtains quality solar energy prediction intervals with high coverage probability and low interval errors. The review and new modelling results utilising an autoencoder deep learning method show that our approach is acceptable to predict solar radiation, and therefore is useful in solar energy monitoring systems to capture the stochastic variations in solar power generation due to cloud cover, aerosols, ozone changes, and other atmospheric attenuation factors. In this paper, we use an evolutionary swarm intelligence approach to build an automatic electric dispatch controller for an offshore wind power plant (WPP). The optimal power flow (OPF) problem for this WPP is solved by the Canonical Differential Evolutionary Particle Swarm Optimization algorithm (C-DEEPSO). In this paper, C-DEEPSO works as a control system for reactive sources in energy production. The control operation takes place in a daily energy dispatch, scheduled into 15 min intervals and resulting in 96 operating test scenarios. As the nature of the optimization problem is dynamic, a fine-tuning of the initialization parameters of the optimization algorithm is performed at each dispatch interval. Therefore, a version of the C-DEEPSO algorithm has been built to automatically learn the best set of initialization parameters for each scenario. For this, we have coupled C-DEEPSO with the irace tool (an extension of the iterated F-race (I/F-Race)) by using inferential statistic techniques. The experiments carried out showed that the methodology employed here is robust and able to tackle this OPF-like modeling. This paper deals with the problem of finding the optimal location and sizing of Energy Storage Systems in DC-electrified railway lines. These devices increment the use of the regenerated energy produced by the trains in the braking phases, as they store the energy to later provide to the catenary the excess of regenerated energy, that otherwise would be lost in the rheostats. However, these infrastructures require a high initial investment that, in some cases, may question their profitability. We propose a multi-method ensemble meta-heuristic to obtain the optimal solution to the problem, with a high level of accuracy. Specifically, the Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layers (CRO-SL) is proposed, an evolutionary-type approach able to run different search procedures within the same population. Friction-induced stick-slip vibrations are one of the major causes for down-hole drill-string failures. Consequently, several nonlinear models and control approaches have been proposed to solve this problem. This work proposes a dual-loop control strategy. The inner loop damps the vibration of the system, eliminating the limit cycle due to nonlinear friction. The outer loop achieves the desired velocity with a fast time response. The optimal tuning of the control parameters is carried out with a multi-method ensemble meta-heuristic, the Coral Reefs Optimisation algorithm with Substrate Layer (CRO-SL). It is an evolutionary-type algorithm that combines different search strategies within a single population, obtaining a robust, high-performance algorithm to tackle hard optimisation problems. An application example based on a real nonlinear dynamics model of a drill-string illustrates that the controller optimised by the CRO-SL achieves excellent performance in terms of stick-slip vibrations cancellation, fast time response, robustness to system parameter uncertainties and chattering phenomenon prevention. This work presents a full statistical analysis and accurate prediction of low-visibility events due to fog, at the A-8 motor-road in Mondoñedo (Galicia, Spain). The present analysis covers two years of study, considering visibility time series and exogenous variables collected in the zone affected the most by extreme low-visibility events. This paper has then a two-fold objective: first, we carry out a statistical analysis for estimating the fittest probability distributions to the fog event duration, using the Maximum Likelihood method and an alternative method known as the L-moments method. This statistical study allows association of the low-visibility depth with the event duration, showing a clear relationship, which can be modeled with distributions for extremes such as Generalized Extreme Value and Generalized Pareto distributions. Second, we apply a neural network approach, trained by means of the ELM (Extreme Learning Machine) algorithm, to predict the occurrence of low-visibility events due to fog, from atmospheric predictive variables. This study provides a full characterization of fog events at this motor-road, in which orographic fog is predominant, causing important traffic problems during all year. We also show how the ELM approach is able to obtain highly accurate low-visibility events predictions, with a Pearson correlation coefficient of 0.8 , within a half-hour time horizon, enough to initialize some protocols aiming at reducing the impact of these extreme events in the traffic of the A-8 motor road. Hydro-power plants are able to produce electrical energy in a sustainable way. A known format for producing energy is through generation scheduling, which is a task usually established as a Unit Commitment problem. The challenge in this process is to define the amount of energy that each turbine-generator needs to deliver to the plant, to fulfill the requested electrical dispatch commitment, while coping with the operational restrictions. An optimal generation scheduling for turbine-generators in hydro-power plants can offer a larger amount of energy to be generated with respect to non-optimized schedules, with significantly less water consumption. This work presents an efficient mathematical modelling for generation scheduling in a real hydro-power plant in Brazil. An optimization method based on different versions of the Coral Reefs Optimization algorithm with Substrate Layers (CRO) is proposed as an effective method to tackle this problem. This approach uses different search operators in a single population to refine the search for an optimal scheduling for this problem. We have shown that the solution obtained with the CRO using Gaussian search in exploration is able to produce competitive solutions in terms of energy production. This work proposes an Artificial Neural Network (ANN) able to provide an accurate forecasting of power produced by photovoltaic (PV) plants. The ANN is customized on the basis of the particular season of the year. An accurate analysis of input variables, i.e., solar irradiance, temperature and air humidity, carried out by means of Pearson Correlation, has allowed to select, day by day, the most suitable set of inputs and ANN architecture also to reduce the necessity of large computational resource. Thus, features are added to the ANN as needed, avoiding waste of computational resources. The method has been validated through data collected from a PV plant installed in ENEA (National agency for new technologies, energy and sustainable economic development) Research Center, located in Casaccia, Rome (Italy). The developed strategy is able to furnish accurate predictions even in the case of strong irregularities of solar irradiance, providing accurate results in rapidly changing scenarios. This paper presents a novel methodology for Climate Network (CN) construction based on the Kullback-Leibler divergence (KLD) among Membership Probability (MP) distributions, obtained from the Second Order Data-Coupled Clustering (SODCC) algorithm. The proposed method is able to obtain CNs with emergent behaviour adapted to the variables being analyzed, and with a low number of spurious or missing links. We evaluate the proposed method in a problem of CN construction to assess differences in wind speed prediction at different wind farms in Spain. The considered problem presents strong local and mesoscale relationships, but low synoptic scale relationships, which have a direct influence in the CN obtained. We carry out a comparison of the proposed approach with a classical correlation-based CN construction method. We show that the proposed approach based on the SODCC algorithm and the KLD constructs CNs with an emergent behaviour according to underlying wind speed prediction data physics, unlike the correlation-based method that produces spurious and missing links. This work presents an analysis of low-visibility event persistence and prediction at Villanubla Airport (Valladolid, Spain), considering Runway Visual Range (RVR) time series in winter. The analysis covers long- and short-term persistence and prediction of the series, with different approaches. In the case of long-term analysis, a Detrended Fluctuation Analysis (DFA) approach is applied in order to estimate large-scale RVR time series similarities. The short-term persistence analysis of low-visibility events is evaluated by means of a Markov chain analysis of the binary time series associated with low-visibility events. We finally discuss an hourly short-term prediction of low-visibility events, using different approaches, some of them coming from the persistence analysis through Markov chain models, and others based on Machine Learning (ML) techniques. The prediction of electrical power produced in combined cycle power plants is a key challenge in the electrical power and energy systems field. This power production can vary depending on environmental variables, such as temperature, pressure, and humidity. Thus, the business problem is how to predict the power production as a function of these environmental conditions, in order to maximize the profit. The research community has solved this problem by applying Machine Learning techniques, and has managed to reduce the computational and time costs in comparison with the traditional thermodynamical analysis. Until now, this challenge has been tackled from a batch learning perspective, in which data is assumed to be at rest, and where models do not continuously integrate new information into already constructed models. We present an approach closer to the Big Data and Internet of Things paradigms, in which data are continuously arriving and where models learn incrementally, achieving significant enhancements in terms of data processing (time, memory and computational costs), and obtaining competitive performances. This work compares and examines the hourly electrical power prediction of several streaming regressors, and discusses about the best technique in terms of time processing and predictive performance to be applied on this streaming scenario. In this work, a problem of optimal placement of renewable generation and topology design for a Microgrid (MG) is tackled. The problem consists of determining the MG nodes where renewable energy generators must be optimally located and also the optimization of the MG topology design, i.e., deciding which nodes should be connected and deciding the lines' optimal cross-sectional areas (CSA). For this purpose, a multi-objective optimization with two conflicting objectives has been used, utilizing the cost of the lines, C, higher as the lines' CSA increases, and the MG energy losses, E, lower as the lines' CSA increases. To characterize generators and loads connected to the nodes, on-site monitored annual energy generation and consumption profiles have been considered. Optimization has been carried out by using a novel multi-objective algorithm, the Multi-objective Substrate Layers Coral Reefs Optimization algorithm (Mo-SL-CRO). The performance of the proposed approach has been tested in a realistic simulation of a MG with 12 nodes, considering photovoltaic generators and micro-wind turbines as renewable energy generators, as well as the consumption loads from different commercial and industrial sites. We show that the proposed Mo-SL-CRO is able to solve the problem providing good solutions, better than other well-known multi-objective optimization techniques, such as NSGA-II or multi-objective Harmony Search algorithm. This paper proposes a low-profile textile-modified meander line Inverted-F Antenna (IFA) with variable width and spacing meanders, for Industrial Scientific Medical (ISM) 2.4-GHz Wireless Body Area Networks (WBAN), optimized with a novel metaheuristic algorithm. Specifically, a metaheuristic known as Coral Reefs Optimization with Substrate Layer (CRO-SL) is used to obtain an optimal antenna for sensor systems, which allows covering properly and resiliently the 2.4⁻2.45-GHz industrial scientific medical bandwidth. Flexible pad foam has been used to make the designed prototype with a 1.1-mm thickness. We have used a version of the algorithm that is able to combine different searching operators within a single population of solutions. This approach is ideal to deal with hard optimization problems, such as the design of the proposed meander line IFA. During the optimization phase with the CRO-SL, the proposed antenna has been simulated using CST Microwave Studio software, linked to the CRO-SL by means of MATLAB implementation and Visual Basic Applications (VBA) code. We fully describe the antenna design process, the adaptation of the CRO-SL approach to this problem and several practical aspects of the optimization and details on the algorithm’s performance. To validate the simulation results, we have constructed and measured two prototypes of the antenna, designed with the proposed algorithm. Several practical aspects such as sensitivity during the antenna manufacturing or the agreement between the simulated and constructed antenna are also detailed in the paper.
