Renal interstitial fibrosis (RIF) is a classic pathophysiological process of chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, the mechanisms underlying RIF remain unclear. The present study found that a novel circular RNA, cirInpp5b, might be involved in RIF by high-throughput sequencing. Subsequent experiments revealed that circInpp5b was reduced in UUO mouse kidney tissues and TGF-β1-treated proximal tubular cells. The overexpression of circInpp5b inhibited RIF in UUO mice and prevented extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition in TGF-β1-treated proximal tubular cells. Furthermore, overexpression of circInpp5b down-regulated the protein level of DDX1. Mechanistically, circInpp5b bound to the DDX1 protein and promoted its lysosomal degradation. Collectively, the findings of our study demonstrate that circInpp5b ameliorates RIF by binding to the DDX1 protein and promoting its lysosomal degradation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This brief presents a comprehensive analysis of the output-dependent modulation (ODM) in a current-steering digital-to-analog converter (CS-DAC) based on the differential-quad switching (DQS) structure. A mathematical model is proposed to accurately describe ODM, which is categorized into two types: output transition errors and boundary effect errors. A novel approach of adding isolation devices is introduced and reinterpreted to mitigate the effect of ODM. The simulation results indicate that the inclusion of isolation devices efficiently suppresses the odd harmonics at mid-to-high frequency by a value that is 13 dB lower than before. Background: The aim of this study was to exploit integrated PET/MRI to simultaneously evaluate the morphological, component, and metabolic features of advanced atherosclerotic plaques and explore their incremental value. Methods: In this observational prospective cohort study, patients with advanced plaque in the carotid artery underwent 18F-FDG PET/MRI. Plaque morphological features were measured, and plaque component features were determined via MRI according to AHA lesion-types. Maximum standardized uptake values (SUVmax) and tissue to background ratio (TBR) on PET were calculated. Area under the receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) and net reclassification improvement (NRI) were used to compare the incremental contribution of FDG uptake when added to AHA lesion-types for symptomatic plaque classification. Results: A total of 280 patients with advanced plaque in the carotid artery were recruited. A total of 402 plaques were confirmed, and 87 of 402 (21.6%) were symptomatic plaques. 18F-FDG PET/MRI was performed a mean of 38 days (range 1–90) after the symptom. Increased stenosis degree (61.5% vs. 50.0%, p < 0.001) and TBR (2.96 vs. 2.32, p < 0.001) were observed in symptomatic plaques compared with asymptomatic plaques. The performance of the combined model (AHA lesion type VI + stenosis degree + TBR) for predicting symptomatic plaques was the best among all models (AUC = 0.789). The improvement of the combined model (AHA lesion type VII + stenosis degree + TBR) over AHA lesion type VII model for predicting symptomatic plaques was the highest (AUC = 0.757/0.454, combined model/AHA lesion type VII model), and the NRI was 50.7%. Conclusions: Integrated PET/MRI could simultaneously evaluate the morphological component and inflammation features of advanced atherosclerotic plaques and provide supplementary optimization information over AHA lesion-types for identifying vulnerable plaques in atherosclerosis subjects to achieve further stratification of stroke risk. The architectural relics of ancient vernacular residences and villages with brick–timber structures are at great risk of fire; if one occurs, they cannot be recovered. To protect this cultural heritage, this study takes a southern Guangdong He Xinwu building complex as a case study. It focuses on four indicator systems: human factors, facility factors, environmental factors, and social management factors, and 20 sub-indicators to establish an assessment system for fire risk in vernacular residences. Combining triangular fuzzy hierarchical analysis and the entropy weight method to determine weight values reduces evaluation subjectivity, allowing for both qualitative and quantitative measurements to derive the safety level and determine key fire risk factors. The results showed that human misconduct and social management of fire had the greatest impact on fire risk (29% and 25.8%, respectively). The most important secondary indicators were the ability to fight fires early on, the fire resistance level of building materials, fire rescue capability, fire load, and electricity use by villagers. Moreover, comparing differences in protection between ancient houses and high-rise buildings provided targeted policy recommendations that offer a new perspective for protecting architectural heritage from fires. In our previous studies, photobiomodulation (PBM) stimulation can induce significant brain activation in normal subjects. In an open-eye study, the PBM stimulation was able to increase the power of alpha rhythms and theta waves, as well as decrease the beta activities after PBM stimulation. However, in the closed eyes study, the alpha rhythms in the laser group were reduced. This means the PBM stimulation can induce specific brainwaves under different conditions. Thus, to investigate the effects of PBM stimulation on human's attention, forty students were recruited in this single-blind randomized trial. A PBM stimulator, with seven pcs laser diodes (LDs), frequency 10 Hz, 30 mW/each LD, and wavelength 830 nm, was used to radiate the palm of the subject. PBM stimulation was found to induce significant variation in beta activity in most of the regions of the brain in the laser group. Compared to the placebo group, the PBM stimulation has a significant change in beta activity on electroencephalography (EEG). Three types of tests, the random number test, the Stroop color-word test, and the Multiple-Dimension Attention Test (MDAT), were used to evaluate the effects of the PBM stimulation. The scores of MDAT in the laser group increased more significantly than those in the placebo group after PBM stimulation (p < 0.01). An improvement in attention was observed in this study. Many laboratory studies have shown that particle size distribution (PSD) affects the liquefaction susceptibility of granular materials. However, few studies have focused on the impact of PSD on coral particles. In this study, two different soil families were prepared: one with three levels of mean particle size (D50) with identical uniformity coefficient (Cu)and the other with four levels of Cu with the same D50 for coral gravelly soils. In addition, a series of undrained cyclic triaxial tests were conducted on coral gravelly particles with two groups of PSDs at a relative density of 40% and an adequate confining pressure of 100 kPa. The test results indicated that D50 with identical Cu can affect the undrained cyclic behavior of coral gravelly particles. In contrast, Cu with identical D50 does not impact the undrained cyclic behavior of coral gravelly particles. The developing pore water pressure was uniform when the sample was subjected to the same cyclic loading. For samples with changing D50 values of 2.35, 4.70, and 7.05 mm, increasing D50 improved the cyclic liquefaction resistance. For samples with changing Cu, increasing Cu in the range of 1.06–5.00 first increased and then decreased the liquefaction resistance. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

L. paracasei subsp. paracasei X12 was obtained from traditional cheese produced in northwestern China. In this study, we showed that whole peptidoglycan (WPG), extracted from L. paracasei subsp. paracasei X12, inhibited proliferation and induced apoptosis in HT-29 cells in a dose-dependent manner. In addition, WPG-induced apoptosis was associated with the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential (Ψm), the release of cytochrome c (Cyto-C) from mitochondrialto cytosolic spaces, activation of Caspase 3, and accumulation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Finally, semi-quantitative RT-PCR showed that these events were accompanied by upregulation of proapoptotic genes (Bax or Bad) and downregulation of antiapoptotic genes (Bcl-xl). Taken together, our results demonstrated that WPG induced apoptosis in HT-29 cells through activation of the mitochondrial pathway. Timing-mismatch errors among channels in time-interleaved analog-to-digital converters (TIADCs) greatly degrade the whole performance of the system. Therefore, techniques for calibrating timing mismatch are indispensable, and a new fully-digital calibration technique is presented in this article. Based on a Hilbert filter, modified moving averagers (MMAs) and inverse cosine functions, the proposed estimation algorithm is fast (within 1200 sample points) and accurate. Meanwhile, the coordinate rotational digital computer (CORDIC) algorithm, which is used to implement inverse cosine functions, is also improved, giving it higher precision. In addition, a compensation method based on second-order Taylor series approximation with less hardware resource consumption is provided. Through analyses and simulations, this calibration technique proved to be suitable for TIADCs with an arbitrary number of channels, in which the signal-to-noise and distortion ratio (SNDR) and the spurious-free dynamic range (SFDR) were, respectively, improved from 24.06 dB and 24.57 dB to 67.96 dB and 85.69 dB. (1) Background: The imbalance of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) is common worldwide. Many people have high tension when the sympathetic nervous system is hyperactive or low attention when the parasympathetic nervous system is hyperactive. To improve autonomic imbalance, a feasible and integrated system was proposed to measure and affect the ANS status. (2) Methods: The proposed system consists of a signal-processing module, an LED stimulation module, a photoplethysmography (PPG) sensor and an LCD display. The heart rate variability (HRV) and ANS status can be analyzed from PPG data. To confirm HRV analysis from PPG data, an electrocardiogram (ECG) device was also used to measure HRV. Additionally, photobiomodulation (PBM) was used to affect the ANS status, and two acupuncture points (Neiguan (PC6) and Shenmen (HT7)) were stimulated with different frequencies (10 Hz and 40 Hz) of PBM. (3) Results: Two subjects were tested with the developed system. HRV metrics were discussed in the time domain and frequency domain. HRV metrics have a similar change trend on PPG and ECG signals. In addition, the SDNN was increased, and the parasympathetic nervous system (PNS: HF (%)) was enhanced with a 10 Hz pulse rate stimulation at the Neiguan acupoint (PC6). Furthermore, the SDNN was increased, and the sympathetic nervous system (SNS: LF (%)) was enhanced with a 40 Hz pulse rate stimulation at the Shenmen (HT7) acupoint. (4) Conclusion: A prototype to measure and affect the ANS was proposed, and the functions were feasible. The test results show that stimulating the Neiguan (PC6) acupoint can inhibit the SNS. In contrast, stimulating the Shenmen (HT7) acupoint can activate the SNS. However, more experiments must be conducted to confirm the effect by choosing different pulse rates, dosages and acupoints. Ice-rich permafrost in the Qinghai–Tibet Plateau (QTP), China, is becoming susceptible to thermokarst landforms, and the most dramatic among these terrain-altering landforms is retrogressive thaw slump (RTS). Concurrently, RTS development can in turn affect the eco-environment, and especially soil erosion and carbon emission, during their evolution. However, there are still a lack of quantitative methods and comprehensive studies on the deformation and volumetric change in RTS. The purpose of this study is to quantitatively assess the RTS evolution through a novel and feasible simulation framework of the GPU-based discrete element method (DEM) coupled with the finite difference method (FDM). Additionally, the simulation results were calibrated using the time series observation results from September 2021 to August 2022, using the combined methods of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) and unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV). The results reveal that, over this time, thaw slump mobilized a total volume of 1335 m3 and approximately 1050 m3 moved to a displaced area. Additionally, the estimated soil erosion was about 211 m3. Meanwhile, the corresponding maximum ground subsidence and headwall retrogression were 1.9 m and 3.2 m, respectively. We also found that the amount of mass wasting in RTS development is highly related to the ground ice content. When the volumetric ice content exceeds 10%, there will be obvious mass wasting in the thaw slump development area. Furthermore, this work proposed that the coupled DEM-FDM method and field survey method of TLS-UAV can provide an effective pathway to simulate thaw-induced slope failure problems and complement the research limitations of small-scale RTSs using remote sensing methods. Simple Summary: Accurate localization of the epileptogenic zone and understanding the related whole-brain functional alteration patterns are critical for the prediction of postsurgical outcomes in patients with temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE). Previous studies suggested that functional connectivity (FC) alterations based on structurally abnormal lesion on MRI could indicate the clinical prognosis. However, hypometabolic regions localized by 18F-FDG PET precedes the appearance of structural abnormalities in lesion localization. By using hybrid 18F-FDG PET/fMRI, we aim to obtain spatially and temporally matched structural, functional, and metabolic information of TLE patients, localize their hypometabolic regions, compare the differences of FC alteration patterns based on hypometabolic region and structural lesion, respectively, and further explore their relationships with disease progression and postsurgical outcome. The results showed that hypometabolic region could be used for detecting a more extensive long-range functional alteration pattern, which correlated with disease progression (epilepsy duration) and surgical outcome (seizure-free or not in follow-up). In this way, we conclude that FC alterations based on hypometabolic region constructed by 18F-FDG PET/fMRI may provide additional value in the prediction of clinical prognosis in TLE patients. (3) Results: Hypometabolic regions in TLE patients were found in the ipsilateral hippocampus, parahippocampal gyrus, and temporal lobe (p < 0.001). Functional alterations based on hypometabolic regions showed a more extensive whole-brain FC reduction. FC values of these regions negatively correlated with epilepsy duration (p < 0.05), and the ROC curve of them showed significant accuracy in predicting postsurgical outcome. (4) Conclusions: In TLE patients, FC related with hypometabolic region obtained by PET/fMRI may provide value in the prediction of disease progression and seizure-free outcome. Hepatitis A virus (HAV) and hepatitis E virus (HEV) are causative agents of acute viral hepatitis transmitted via the fecal--oral route. Both viruses place a heavy burden on the public health and economy of developing countries. To test the possibility that HAV could be used as an expression vector for the development of a combination vaccine against hepatitis A and E infections, recombinant HAV-HEp148 was created as a vector to express an HEV neutralization epitope (HEp148) located at aa 459-606 of the HEV capsid protein. The recombinant virus expressed the HEp148 protein in a partially dimerized state in HAV-susceptible cells. Immunization with the HAV-HEp148 virus induced a strong HAV- and HEV-specific immune response in mice. Dibutyl phthalate (DBP) in the presence of a wastewater system is harmful to the environment and interferes with the human's endocrine system. For wastewater treatment, DBP is very difficult to be decomposed by biotechniques and many catalytic processes have been developed. Among them, the electrocatalytic oxidation (EO) technique has been proven to possess high degradation efficiency of various organic compounds in wastewater. In this study, an electrocatalytic electrode of iridium-tantalum/titanium (IrO2-Ta2O5/Ti) was employed as the anode and graphite as the cathode to decompose DBP substances in the water. According to experimental results, the high removal efficiency of DBP and total organic carbon (TOC) of 90% and 56%, respectively, could be obtained under a voltage gradient of 10 V/cm for 60 min. Compared with other photocatalysis degradation, the IrO2-Ta2O5/Ti electrode could shorten about half the treatment time and electric power based on the same removal efficiency of DBP (i.e., photocatalysis requires 0.225~0.99 KWh). Results also indicated that the production of hydroxyl radical (•OH) in the electrocatalytic electrode played a key role for decomposing the DBP. Moreover, the pH and conductivity of water containing DBP were slightly changed and eventually remained in a stable state during the EO treatment. In addition, the removal efficiency of DBP could still remain about 90% after using the IrO2-Ta2O5/Ti electrode three times and the surface structure of the IrO2-Ta2O5/Ti electrode was stable. Marine clays are easily affected by different mineral composition in cyclic load-based geological hazards. Therefore, based on analyzing the mineral composition of natural marine clay, it is the key to predict the dynamic properties of natural materials under cyclic loading by using quantitated artificial marine clay. In this study, the marine clay found in the South China Sea deltas was investigated. Based on the results of geological conditions and mineral composition analyses, raw non-clay minerals (such as quartz, albite) and clay minerals (such as Na-montmorillonite and kaolinite) were used to produce artificial marine clay, the dynamic properties of which were studied from the impact of mineral composition. Dynamic triaxial laboratory testing for artificial marine clay comprising various clay minerals was performed under identical test conditions. The artificial marine clay with high montmorillonite content exhibited slower development of strain, more sluggish growth in pore water pressure, more rounded hysteresis curves, greater stiffness, and more prolonged viscous energy growth than the clay with low montmorillonite content. In addition, the flocculated fabric of the artificial marine clay with high montmorillonite content demonstrated sufficient pore space changes, more uniform pore distribution, and larger specific surface area than the dispersed fabric of the clay with low montmorillonite content. The factors arising from the influence of montmorillonite may lead to microstructural and fabric changes, hinder the development of pore water, and increase intergranular contact stiffness as well as delay the cyclic strain amplitude at the breakpoint of viscous energy dissipation. The strength and plasticity balance of F/B dual-phase X80 pipeline steels strongly depends on deformation compatibility between the soft phase of ferrite and the hard phase of bainite; thus, the tensile strength of ferrite and bainite, as non-negligible factors affecting the deformation compatibility, should be considered first. In this purely theoretical paper, an abstract representative volume elements (RVE) model was developed, based on the mesostructure of an F/B dual-phase X80 pipeline steel. The effect of the yield strength difference between bainite and ferrite on tensile properties and the strain hardening behaviors of the mesostructure was studied. The results show that deformation first occurs in ferrite, and strain and stress localize in ferrite prior to bainite. In the modified Crussard-Jaoul (C-J) analysis, as the yield strength ratio of bainite to ferrite ( σ y , B / σ y , F ) increases, the transition strain associated with the deformation transformation from ferrite soft phase deformation to uniform deformation of ferrite and bainite increases. Meanwhile, as the uncoordinated deformation of ferrite and bainite is enhanced, the strain localization factor (SLF) increases, especially the local strain concentration. Consequently, the yield, tensile strength, and yield ratio (yield strength/tensile strength) increase with the increase in σ y , B / σ y , F . Microbial-induced calcite precipitation (MICP) has been a promising method to improve geotechnical engineering properties through the precipitation of calcium carbonate (CaCO3) on the contact and surface of soil particles in recent years. In the present experiment, water absorption and unconfined compressive strength (UCS) tests were carried out to investigate the effects of three different fiber types (glass fiber, polyester fiber, and hemp fiber) on the physical and mechanical properties of MICP-treated calcareous sand. The fibers used were at 0%, 0.10%, 0.15%, 0.20%, 0.25%, 0.30%, 0.35%, and 0.40% relative to the weight of the sand. The results showed that the failure strain and ductility of the samples could be improved by adding fibers. Compared to biocemented sand (BS), the water absorption of these three fiber-reinforced biocemented sands were, respectively, decreased by 11.60%, 21.18%, and 7.29%. UCS was, respectively, increased by 24.20%, 60.76%, and 6.40%. Polyester fiber produced the best effect, followed by glass fiber and hemp fiber. The optimum contents of glass fiber and polyester fiber were 0.20% and 0.25%, respectively. The optimum content of hemp fiber was within the range of 0.20–0.25%. Light-emitting diode (LED) microscope and scanning electron microscope (SEM) images lead to the conclusion that only a little calcite precipitation had occurred around the hemp fiber, leading to a poor bonding effect compared to the glass and polyester fibers. A series of experiments with different NaCl concentrations added to the PCB (printed circuit board) wastewater were prepared to investigate the chloride effect on the formation of aluminum floc and removal efficiency of Cu and Ni. The effects of pH, current density, and different concentration of NaCl were studied and the results are discussed. Results imply that chloride ions are favored to avoid the passivation of the aluminum anode in the EC (electro-coagulation) system. Chloride ions used as the electrolyte can facilitate the release of Al3+, which results in the current efficiency of over 100% in the EC system. For the PCB factory's wastewater, the EC system could remove Cu2+ and Ni2+ effectively (both Cu and Ni concentration of treated wastewater was less than 1.0 mg/L within three minutes). PCB wastewater's pH value could maintain stably about 9.0 in the EC system when the initial pH value was around 2.5. The estimated electricity consumption for treating PCB wastewater by the EC process was about 0.894 kWh for each meter of cubic wastewater. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Adding rubber into sands has been found to improve the mechanical behavior of sands, including their dynamic properties. However, ambiguous and even contradictory results have been reported regarding the dynamic behavior of sand–rubber mixtures, particularly in terms of the damping ratio. A series of cyclic triaxial tests were, therefore, performed under a large range of shear strains on sand–rubber mixtures with varying rubber volume contents, rubber particle sizes, and confining pressures. The results indicate the dynamic shear modulus decreases with increasing rubber volume content and with decreasing particle size and confining pressure. The relationship of the damping ratio to the evaluated parameters is complicated and strain-dependent; at shear strains less than a critical value, the damping ratio increases with increasing rubber volume content, whereas the opposite trend is observed at greater shear strains. Furthermore, sand–rubber mixtures with different rubber particle sizes exceed the damping ratio of pure sand at different rubber volume contents. A new empirical model to predict the maximum shear moduli of mixtures with various rubber volume contents, rubber particle sizes, and confining pressures is accordingly proposed. This study aims to clarify the removal mechanism and to calculate the effective current of electrocoagulation (i.e., EC) for treating wastewater containing Ni(II), Cu(II), and Cr(VI). The adsorption behavior of various heavy metals onto Al(OH)3 coagulant generated by the EC process was investigated and the estimating method of the corresponding current was established. Results indicate that adsorption of single Ni(II) and Cu(II) by Al(OH)3 coagulant can be simulated by the Langmuir isotherm, while Cr(VI) adsorption fits the Freundlich isotherm better. As treating single heavy metal of wastewater, the removal mechanism of the EC process is the adsorption reaction. Under the coexisting condition, the Ni(II) and Cu(II) will compete for the same active sites on the Al(OH)3 surface and Cu(II) suppresses Ni(II) adsorption. As treating the coexisting heavy metals, Ni(II) removal not only associates with adsorption but also with the coprecipitation. In contrast, Cr(VI) does not compete with other metal ions for the same type of adsorption sites. Whether single or coexisting conditions, the adsorption capacity of heavy metals onto Al(OH)3 coagulants can be used to compute the necessary current to effectively remove heavy metals in the EC system. In this work, nano V/TiO2 catalysts at different molar ratios were prepared and fabricated as the electrocatalytic electrodes for electrocatalytic degradation. The effect of the vanadium doping on the surface morphology, microstructural, and specific surface area of V/TiO2 catalysts was probed by field emission scanning electron microscope (FESEM) x-ray diffractometer (XRD), and Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), respectively. Afterward, the solution of Acid Red 27 (AR 27, one kind of azo dye) was treated by an electrocatalytic system in which the nano V/TiO2 electrode was employed as the anode and graphite as the cathode. Results demonstrate that AR 27 can be effectively degraded by the nano V/TiO2 electrodes; the highest removal efficiency of color and total organic carbon (TOC) reached 99% and 76%, respectively, under 0.10 VT (molar ratio of vanadium to titanium) condition. The nano V/TiO2 electrode with high specific surface area facilitated the electrocatalytic degradation. The current density of 25 mA cm−2 was found to be the optimum operation for this electrocatalytic system whereas the oxygen was increased with the current density. The electricity consumption of pure TiO2 and nano V/TiO2 electrode in this electrocatalytic system was around 0.11 kWh L−1 and 0.02 kWh L−1, respectively. This paper proposes an adaptive overall control strategy of the permanent magnet synchronous generator-based wind energy conversion system (WECS) in the whole wind speed range. For the machine side, the maximum power point tracking (MPPT) operation is realized by stator current and mechanical rotation speed control under below-rated wind speeds. Under above-rated wind speeds, the extracted wind power is limited via pitch control. For the grid side, the reactive and active power injected into grid is regulated by DC-Link voltage and grid current control loop. In addition, under grid voltage dips, the pitch control is employed for limiting grid current and maintaining the DC-Link voltage around its rated value. The fault ride-through capability (FRTC) can be enhanced. The overall control strategy is based on perturbation estimation technique. A designed observer is used for estimating the perturbation term including all system nonlinearities, uncertainties and disturbances, so as to compensate the real perturbation. Then, an adaptive control for the original nonlinear system can be realized. The effectiveness of the proposed overall control strategy is verified by applying the strategy to a 2-MW WECS in MATLAB/Simulink. The results show that, compared with the feedback linearizing control (FLC) strategy and conventional vector control (VC) strategy, the proposed perturbation observer based adaptive control (PO-AC) strategy realizes the control objectives without knowing full state information and accurate system model, and improves the robustness of the WECS parameter uncertainties and FRTC.
