The polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) provides us with a two-by-two scattering matrix data set. The ensemble averaged coherency matrix in an imaging window derived using a scattering matrix has all non-zero elements in its three-by-three matrix. It is a full 3 × 3 matrix that bears nine real-valued and independent polarimetric parameters inside. In the proposed decomposition method, G5U, we preprocess observed coherency matrix [T] by using two consecutive unitary transformations to become an ideal form for five-component decomposition. The transformation reduces nine parameters to seven, which is the best fit for five-component scattering model expansion. We can retrieve five powers corresponding to surface scattering, double bounce scattering, volume scattering, oriented dipole scattering, and compound dipole scattering, directly. These powers can be calculated easily and used to display superb polarimetric RBG images as never before, and are further applicable for polarimetric calibration, classification, validation, etc. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Featured Application: Particle degradation of biomass materials can be a severe issue in transportation and material handling because of dust generated. Especially for pneumatic conveying systems, assessment of material degradation in such a large process can be challenging. In this study, the degradation of wood pellets and dry roasted coffee beans in a pneumatic conveyor was evaluated for high-speed impacts. The change in particle size and generation of fine particles were used as an indicating parameter for the degradation. A four-bends industrial scale conveying system was used for the degradation study in lean phase pneumatic conveying. The effects of operating parameters on the degradation were investigated, including the conveying velocity of particles and particle concentration. The experimental results showed that the degradation and the fines generation increased with an increase in particle velocity. An opposite trend was observed with an increased solid concentration in the pipeline. It was found that the two types of wood pellets traveled at different particle velocities with the same operating conditions, which resulted in significant differences in the degradation. Compared to the wood pellets, roasted coffee beans were found to travel at air velocity. In conclusion, the degradation in a pneumatic conveying system is complex and challenging to evaluate because there are many influential factors, such as the type of materials, equipment, and operation conditions. This paper deals with the retrieval of snow depth (SD) and snow water equivalent (SWE) using dual-polarization (HH-VV) synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data. The effect of different snowpack conditions on the SD and SWE inversion accuracy was demonstrated by using three TerraSAR-X acquisitions. The algorithm is based on the relationship between the SD, the co-polar phase difference (CPD), and particle anisotropy. The Dhundi observatory in the Indian Himalaya was selected as a validation test site where a field campaign was conducted for ground truth measurements in January 2016. Using the field measured values of the snow parameters, the particle anisotropy has been optimized and provided as an input to the SD retrieval algorithm. A spatially variable snow density ( ρ s ) was used for the estimation of the SWE, and a temporal resolution of 90 m was achieved in the inversion process. When the retrieval accuracy was tested for different snowpack conditions, it was found that the proposed algorithm shows good accuracy for recrystallized dry snowpack without distinct layering and low wetness (w). The statistical indices, namely, the root mean square error (RMSE), the mean absolute difference (MAD), and percentage error (PE), were used for the accuracy assessment. The algorithm was able to retrieve SD with an average MAE and RMSE of 6.83 cm and 7.88 cm, respectively. The average MAE and RMSE values for SWE were 17.32 mm and 21.41 mm, respectively. The best case PE in the SD and the SWE retrieval were 8.22 cm and 18.85 mm, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The highly dynamic nature of snow requires frequent observations to study its various properties. Keeping this in mind, the present investigation presents results from the analysis of fully polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (POLSAR) parameters for the development of a snow depth (SD) inversion model for SD retrieval. Snow depth retrieved using ground penetrating radar (GPR) at 500 MHz over Austre Grønfjordbreen in the Svalbard region was used to understand the behaviour of certain polarimetric parameters. A significant correlation was found between field-measured SD and POLSAR parameters, namely coherence and normalized volume scattering power (R2 = 0.84 and R2 = 0.73, respectively.) Using the POLSAR scattering powers obtained from the six-component model-based decomposition (6SD), the heterogeneity and anisotropic behaviour in the firn areas are also explained. Further, based on the analyses shown in this work, a polarimetric parameter-based SD inversion algorithm have been proposed and validated. The univariate model with co-polarization coherence has the highest correlation (R2 = 0.84, Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) = 0.18). We have even tested several multivariate models for the same, to conclude that a combination of coherence, normalized volume and double-bounce scattering have a high correlation with SD (R2 = 0.84, RMSE = 0.18). Additionally, temporal and spatial variability in SD was also observed from three polarimetric SAR images acquired between 4 April 2015 and 15 May 2015 over the Western Nordenskiöld Land region. Glacier velocity is one of the most important parameters to understand glacier dynamics. The Severnaya Zemlya archipelago is host to many glaciers of which four major ice caps encompassing these glaciers are studied, namely, Academy of Sciences, Rusanov, Karpinsky, and University. In this study, we adopted the differential interferometric synthetic aperture radar (DInSAR) method utilizing ALOS-2/PALSAR-2 datasets, with a temporal resolution of 14 days. The observed maximum velocity for one of the marine-terminating glaciers in the Academy of Sciences Ice Cap was 72.24 cm/day (≈263 m/a). For the same glacier, an increment of 3.75 times the flow rate was observed in 23 years, compared to a previous study. This has been attributed to deformation in the bed topography of the glacier. Glaciers in other ice caps showed a comparatively lower surface velocity, ranging from 7.43 to 32.12 cm/day. For estimating the error value in velocity, we selected three ice-free regions and calculated the average value of their observed movement rates by considering the fact that there is zero movement for ice-free areas. The average value observed for the ice-free area was 0.09 cm/day, and we added this value in our uncertainty analysis. Further, it was observed that marine-terminating glaciers have a higher velocity than land-terminating glaciers.
