The aim of this article is to provide an analysis of the influence of the type of hard anti-wear coatings on the friction behaviour of DC01 deep-drawing steel sheets. DC01 steel sheets exhibit high formability, and they are widely used in sheet metal forming operations. The tribological properties of the tool surface, especially the coating used, determine the friction conditions in sheet metal forming. In order to carry out the research, this study developed and manufactured a special bending-under-tension (BUT) friction tribometer that models the friction phenomenon on the rounded edges of tools in the deep-drawing process. The rationale for building the tribotester was that there are no commercial tribotesters available that can be used to model the phenomenon of friction on the rounded edges of tools in sheet forming processes. The influence of the type of coating and sheet deformation on the coefficient of friction (CoF) and the change in the topography of the sheet surface were analysed. Countersamples with surfaces prepared using titanium + nitrogen ion implantation, nitrogen ion implantation and electron beam remelting were tested. The tests were carried out in conditions of dry friction and lubrication with oils with different kinematic viscosities. Under dry friction conditions, a clear increase in the CoF value, with the elongation of the samples for all analysed types of countersamples, was observed. Under lubricated conditions, the uncoated countersample showed the most favourable friction conditions. Furthermore, oil with a lower viscosity provided more favourable conditions for reducing the coefficient of friction. Within the entire range of sample elongation, the most favourable conditions for reducing the CoF were provided by uncoated samples and lubrication with S100+ oil. During the friction process, the average roughness decreased as a result of flattening the phenomenon. Under dry friction conditions, the value of the Sa parameter during the BUT test decreased by 20.3-30.2%, depending on the type of countersample. As a result of the friction process, the kurtosis and skewness increased and decreased, respectively, compared to as-received sheet metal.

In this article, an attempt was made to join DP600 steel and Ti6Al4V titanium alloy sheets by resistance spot-welding (RSW) using an interlayer in the form of Cu and Au layers fabricated through the cold-spraying process. The welded joints obtained by RSW without an interlayer were also considered. The influence of Cu and Au as an interlayer on the resulting microstructure as well as mechanical properties (shear force and microhardness) of the joints were determined. A typical type of failure of Ti6Al4V/DP600 joints produced without the use of an interlayer is brittle fracture. The microstructure of the resulting joint consisted mainly of the intermetallic phases FeTi and Fe 2 Ti. The microstructure of the Ti6Al4V/Au/DP600 joint contained the intermetallic phases Ti 3 Au, TiAu, and TiAu4. The intermetallic phases TiCu and FeCu were found in the microstructure of the Ti6Al4V/Cu/DP600 joint. The maximum tensile/shear stress was 109.46 MPa, which is more than three times higher than for a welded joint fabricated without the use of Cu or Au interlayers. It has been observed that some alloying elements, such as Fe, can lower the martensitic transformation temperature, and some, such as Au, can increase the martensitic transformation temperature.

This paper summarizes the possibility of employing knitted textile barriers as a shield against electromagnetic fields to protect the human body from their negative impact. Ten variants of knitted fabrics made of electrically conductive yarns, steel, and copper wire that differed in stitch pattern, structural parameters, and raw material, were designed, manufactured, and tested. The knitted fabrics produced differed in structural parameters, including course and wale density, surface density, thickness, thread length in the loop, wale and course take-up, volume cover factor, and surface porosity. These parameters were examined in accordance with the research methodology used in knitting. Barrier measurements were taken in the direction of the wales and in the direction of the courses for two frequencies of electromagnetic fields: 2-4 GHz and 4-7 GHz. It was observed that the shielding effectiveness of the manufactured materials depends on the structural parameters of the fabric, the stiches applied, and the type of yarn.

Background and Objectives: Chronic radiotherapy-induced skin injury (cRISI) is an irreversible and progressive condition that can significantly impact a patient's quality of life. Despite the limited literature available on the assessment of the epidermal barrier in cRISI, there is a consensus that appropriate skincare, including the use of emollients, is the primary therapeutic approach for this group of patients. The aim of this study was to evaluate the biophysical properties of the skin during the late period (at least 90 days) following radiation therapy (RT) for head and neck cancer. Materials and Methods : This was a single-center prospective non-randomized study. It involved the analysis of 16 adult patients with head and neck cancer who underwent RT at the Greater Poland Cancer Center, along with 15 healthy volunteers. The study and control groups were matched for gender and age ( p = 0.51). Clinical assessment, based on the LENT-SOMA scale, was conducted for all patients. Evaluation of the skin's biophysical properties included: an analysis of transepidermal water loss (TEWL), stratum corneum hydration (SCH), and skin visualization using high-frequency ultrasonography (HF-USG). Results: A significantly higher TEWL was observed in the irradiated area compared to the control area in the study group ( p = 0.004). However, there was no statistically significant difference in SCH ( p = 0.073). Additionally, no significant difference was observed in the values of TEWL and SCH in the irradiated area between the group of patients with and without clinically obvious RISI ( p = 0.192 and p = 0.415, respectively). The skin thickness of the irradiated area, assessed by HF-USG, did not differ significantly from the skin thickness of the control area ( p = 0.638). Furthermore, no difference in skin thickness was observed in patients with clinical features of cRISI in the irradiated and control areas ( p = 0.345). The mean time after RT was 6.1 years. Conclusions: This study marks the first demonstration of epidermal barrier damage in patients in the long term following RT for head and neck cancer. The impairment of the epidermal barrier was observed independently of evident cRISI features. This observation underscores the necessity to recommend appropriate skin care, including the use of emollients, for all patients following RT. We also suggest that HF-USG examination is generally inconclusive in determining the degree of skin damage in the late period after RT.

In patients with oral cancer, the risk factors for local, regional, and distant recurrence according to margin status have not been well established. We aimed to determine the risk factors for recurrence by margin status and to identify a margin cut-off point for improved survival in patients with close margins. We retrospectively reviewed adult patients treated at our centre from 2009 to 2021 for primary oral cancer. Margins were classified as positive (<1 mm), close (1 to 4.9 mm), or clear (>5 mm). Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed. A total of 326 patients (210 men) were included. The mean age was 59.1 years. Margin status was close (n = 168, 51.5%), clear (n = 83, 25.4%), or positive (n = 75, 23.0%). In the univariate analysis, positive surgical margins (HR = 7.53) had the greatest impact on distant failure. Positive surgical margins-without nodal involvement-had the greatest impact on the risk of distant failure. In the close margin group, the optimal cut-off for disease-free survival (AUC = 0.58) and overall survival (AUC = 0.63) was a deep margin > 3 mm, with survival outcomes that were comparable to the clear margin group. These finding suggest that margins < 5 mm may be sufficient in certain well-defined cases. Prospective studies are warranted to confirm these findings.

In the compaction process, an uneven densification of the powder through the entire height of the die is a major problem which determines the strength properties of the final product, which vary throughout the entire volume. The aim of this investigation was to determine the distribution of the forming pressure inside the die and to visualise the differences in compaction. To determine the pressure inside the die during the compaction process, the deformation on the die surface was measured by means of strain gauges. However, in order to visualise the densification of high-silica sand during the compaction process, an X-ray tomograph was used, which permits one to visualise the interior of the die. The authors developed an analytical model of how the change in internal pressure influences the change in stresses arising on the outer surface of the die, and, as a result, the friction force. It has been observed that the highest values of pressure as well as the highest concentrations of the loose medium are found closest to the punch and decrease with distance from the punch. Moreover, based on the measurements of deformation, a dependence of the pressure distribution on the value of friction forces was observed, which prompted further analysis of this phenomenon. As a result, tests to determine the coefficient of friction between the die and the loose medium were carried out. This made it possible to describe the pressure distribution inside the die, based on the pressure applied and the height of the die.

For several decades, natural products have been widely researched and their native scaffolds are the basis for the design and synthesis of new potential therapeutic agents. Betulin is an interesting biologically attractive natural parent molecule with a high safety profile and can easily undergo a variety of structural modifications. Herein, we describe the synthesis of new molecular hybrids of betulin via covalent linkage with an alkyltriphenylphosphonium moiety. The proposed strategy enables the preparation of semi-synthetic derivatives (28-TPP &oplus; BN and 3,28- bis TPP &oplus; BN) from betulin through simple transformations in high yields. The obtained results showed that the presence of a lipophilic cation improved the solubility of the tested analogs compared to betulin, and increased their cytotoxicity. Among the triphenylphosphonium derivatives tested, analogs 7a (IC 50 of 5.56 µM) and 7b (IC 50 of 5.77 µM) demonstrated the highest cytotoxicity against the colorectal carcinoma cell line (HCT 116). TPP &oplus; -conjugates with betulin showed antimicrobial properties against Gram-positive reference Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923 and Staphylococcus epidermidis ATCC 12228 bacteria, at a 200 µM concentration in water. Hence, the conjugation of betulin's parent backbone with a triphenylphosphonium moiety promotes transport through the hydrophobic barriers of the mitochondrial membrane, making it a promising strategy to improve the bioavailability of natural substances.

Friction is one of the most important technological phenomena and has a large influence on the flow characteristics of a deformed material. A strip drawing friction test was used to evaluate the friction characteristics of 0.8 mm thick DC04 steel sheets in a sheet forming operation. Friction tests were carried out using a specially designed friction simulator and uniaxial tensile tests were carried out to determine the mechanical properties of the specimens. In addition, measurements of the sheet surface topography were carried out to identify the tribological properties of the specimens. The friction tests were conducted under different pressure and lubrication conditions. A comparative analysis of the results of the friction tests revealed different changes in the surface topography of the test sheets which can be associated with specific friction mechanisms. It was found that the effectiveness of lubrication depends on the lubricant viscosity and nominal pressure. Increasing the nominal pressure intensifies the phenomenon of asperity flattening and reduces the volume of closed pockets of lubricant.

African swine fever (ASF), caused by a DNA virus (ASFV) belonging to genus Asfivirus of the Asfarviridae family, is one of the most threatening diseases of suids. During last few years, it has spread among populations of wild boars and pigs in countries of Eastern and Central Europe, causing huge economical losses. While local ASF occurrence is positively correlated with wild boar density, ecology of this species (social structure, movement behavior) constrains long-range disease transmission. Thus, it has been speculated that carnivores known for high daily movement and long-range dispersal ability, such as the wolf ( Canis lupus ), may be indirect ASFV vectors. To test this, we analyzed 62 wolf fecal samples for the presence of ASFV DNA, collected mostly in parts of Poland declared as ASF zones. This dataset included 20 samples confirmed to contain wild boar remains, 13 of which were collected near places where GPS-collared wolves fed on dead wild boars. All analyzed fecal samples were ASFV-negative. On the other hand, eight out of nine wild boar carcasses that were fed on by telemetrically studied wolves were positive. Thus, our results suggest that when wolves consume meat of ASFV-positive wild boars, the virus does not survive the passage through intestinal tract. Additionally, wolves may limit ASFV transmission by removing infectious carrion. We speculate that in areas where telemetric studies on large carnivores are performed, data from GPS collars could be used to enhance efficiency of carcass search, which is one of the main preventive measures to constrain ASF spread.

Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma (HNSCC) is the sixth most common cancer worldwide. These tumors originate from epithelial cells of the upper aerodigestive tract. HNSCC tumors in different regions can have significantly different molecular characteristics. While many microRNAs (miRNAs) have been found to be involved in the regulation of the carcinogenesis and pathogenesis of HNSCC, new HNSCC related miRNAs are still being discovered. The aim of this study was to explore potential miRNA biomarkers that can be used to diagnose HNSCC and prognose survival of HNSCC patients. For this purpose, we chose a panel of 12 miRNAs: miR-146a-5p, miR-449a, miR-126-5p, miR-34a-5p, miR-34b-5p, miR-34c-5p, miR-217-5p, miR-378c, miR-6510-3p, miR-96-5p, miR-149-5p, and miR-133a-5p. Expression of these miRNAs was measured in tumor tissue and neighboring healthy tissue collected from patients diagnosed with HNSCC (n = 79) in either the oral cavity, oropharynx, or larynx. We observed a pattern of differentially expressed miRNAs at each of these cancer locations. Our study showed that some of these miRNAs, separately or in combination, could serve as biomarkers distinguishing between healthy and tumor tissue, and their expression correlated with patients' overall survival.

Objectives: Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) can serve as a multidimensional means of evaluating the relationship between the presence of wind turbines in residential areas and their consequence for health. The purpose of this study was to determine whether a relationship exists between the presence of wind farms at different stages of development and the HRQoL of people living in their vicinity in Poland., Method: The instruments employed in this study were the SF-36v2, a questionnaire measuring self-reported health problems, and a sociodemographic questionnaire. The study involved 1277 people who lived within 2 km from a wind turbine., Results: The highest overall QoL scores were obtained by respondents living the closest to wind turbines. The mental health, role emotional, and social functioning scores were significantly higher among respondents living near wind farms and wind-farm construction sites than among those living close to locations where wind farms were planned but where construction had not yet begun. Positive correlations were found between physical and mental component scores and reactions to the news of plans to construct a wind farm. Significant differences in physical and mental component scores were observed between residents who reacted calmly and those who responded with apprehension. Residents who expected the improvement of their financial standing as a result of the wind farm assessed their general health higher than those who did not expect to receive any economic benefits. The lowest QoL scores corresponded to frequent headaches, stomach aches, and back pain over the previous three months, as well as recurrent problems with falling asleep, anxiety, and a lack of acceptance of the project., Conclusion: The lowest overall QoL and general health scores were noted among residents of places where wind-farm developments were either at the stage of planning or under construction. In order to find ways of reducing environmental stress and its adverse effects on health, it is necessary to conduct research on residents of places where a wind farm is either planned or under construction, or has just been completed.
