In finite element models (FEMs), two- or three-dimensional Representative Volume Elements (RVEs) based on a statistical distribution of particles in a matrix can predict mechanical material properties. This article studies an alternative to 3D RVEs with a 2.5D RVE approach defined by a one-plane layer of 3D elements to model the material behavior. This 2.5D RVE relies on springs applied in the out-of-plane direction to constrain the two lateral deformations to be compatible, with the goal of achieving the isotropy of the studied material. The method is experimentally validated by the prediction of the tensile stress–strain curve of a bi-phasic microstructure of the AlSi10Mg alloy. Produced by additive manufacturing, the sample material becomes isotropic after friction stir processing post treatment. If a classical plane strain 2D RVE simulation is clearly too stiff compared to the experiment, the predictions of the stress–strain curves based on 2.5D RVE, 2D RVE with no transversal constraint (called 2D free RVE), and 3D RVE simulations are close to the experiments. The local stress fields within a 2.5D RVE present an interesting similarity with 3D RVE local fields, but differences with the 2D free RVE local results. Since a 2.5D RVE simplifies one spatial dimension, the simulations with this model are faster than the 3D RVE (factor 2580 in CPU or taking into account an optimal parallel computation, a factor 417 in real time). Such a discrepancy can affect the FEM2 multi-scale simulations or the time required to train a neural network, enhancing the interest in a 2.5D RVE model. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work, we revise the concept of foliation and related aspects that are crucial when formulating the Hamiltonian evolution for various theories beyond General Relativity. In particular, we show the relation between the kinematic characteristics of timelike congruences (observers) and the existence of foliations orthogonal to them. We then explore how local Lorentz transformations acting on observers affect the existence of transversal foliations, provide examples, and discuss the implications of these results for the 3 + 1 formulation of tetrad modified theories of gravity. Emerging evidence suggests that retinal neurodegeneration is an early event in the pathogenesis of diabetic retinopathy (DR), preceding the development of microvascular abnormalities. Here, we assessed the impact of neuroinflammation on the retina of diabetic-induced rats. For this aim we have used a two-photon microscope to image the photoreceptors (PRs) at different eccentricities in unstained retinas obtained from both control (N = 4) and pathological rats (N = 4). This technique provides high-resolution images where individual PRs can be identified. Within each image, every PR was located, and its transversal area was measured and used as an objective parameter of neuroinflammation. In control samples, the size of the PRs hardly changed with retinal eccentricity. On the opposite end, diabetic retinas presented larger PR transversal sections. The ratio of PRs suffering from neuroinflammation was not uniform across the retina. Moreover, the maximum anatomical resolving power (in cycles/deg) was also calculated. This presents a double-slope pattern (from the central retina towards the periphery) in both types of specimens, although the values for diabetic retinas were significantly lower across all retinal locations. The results show that chronic retinal inflammation due to diabetes leads to an increase in PR transversal size. These changes are not uniform and depend on the retinal location. The clique transversal problem is a critical concept in graph theory, focused on identifying a minimum subset of vertices that intersects all maximal cliques in a graph. This problem and its variations—such as the k-fold clique, { k } -clique, minus clique, and signed clique transversal problems—have received significant interest due to their theoretical importance and practical applications. This paper examines the k-fold clique, { k } -clique, minus clique, and signed clique transversal problems on distance-hereditary graphs. Known for their distinctive structural properties, distance hereditary graphs provide an ideal framework for studying these problem variants. This study examines the convergence of sustainability competencies in Spanish university curricula. The objective is to analyse and contrast opinions among university teaching staff and students from different fields of study in relation to the presence of competencies and curricular improvements concerning sustainability. The procedure comprised two surveys applied to professors (n2 = 70) and students (n3 = 698). The instrument employed was the Register for Evaluating Curricular Sustainability at the University (RECSU), which permits the collation of data pertaining to sustainability-related transversal competencies, including sustainability values, the use of sustainable methodology in the classroom, the Sustainable Development Goals, and principles of action. In its entirety, this study's approach uses a mixed QUAN (qual) QUAL design. The results indicate which sustainability-aligned competencies and teaching practices are the most and least utilised by teaching staff, as well as which competencies present the greatest opportunity for improvement from the perspective of teaching staff. The findings highlight the relevance of empowering new generations through the development of transversal competencies in university studies. The development of transversal competencies, in interaction with professional competencies, is essential for individuals to adapt to change and live meaningful and productive lives. The aim of this study was to explore the mutual interaction of six transversal competencies—civic, digital, entrepreneurial, global, innovation, and research, as well as their respective sub-competencies—and propose possible approaches to how this dynamic of interaction can be applied to facilitate the development of transversal competencies. A sample of students (N = 1575) from 21 universities in Latvia completed a self-assessment survey evaluating multiple behavioural indicators for each transversal competence and sub-competence. The results revealed that civic competence was evaluated significantly lower than other competencies, and, for most transversal competencies, sub-competencies associated with active and systematic collaboration and networking received lower evaluations. A network analysis showed that the community involvement sub-competence of the civic competence and the initiative and critical thinking sub-competencies of the innovation competence had the strongest links to the other measured sub-competencies on average. The results suggest that the development of initiative and cooperation-and-collaboration-related and network-building skills are likely to have a systematic positive effect on the development of a wider set of transversal competencies and the professional autonomy of students in the long term. This paper explores the computational challenges of clique transversal problems in d-degenerate graphs, which are commonly encountered across theoretical computer science and various network applications. We examine d-degenerate graphs to highlight their utility in representing sparse structures and assess several variations of clique transversal problems, including the b-fold and { b } -clique transversal problems, focusing on their computational complexities for different graph categories. Our analysis identifies that certain instances of these problems are polynomial-time solvable in specific graph classes, such as 1-degenerate or 2-degenerate graphs. However, for d-degenerate graphs where d ≥ 2 , these problems generally escalate to NP-completeness. The study of a Gaussian laser beam interacting with an optical prism, both through reflection and transmission, provides a technical tool to examine deviations from the optical path as dictated by geometric optics principles. These deviations encompass alterations in the reflection and refraction angles, as predicted by the reflection and Snell laws, along with lateral displacements in the case of total internal reflection. The analysis of the angular distributions of both the reflected and transmitted beams allows us to understand the underlying causes of these deviations and displacements, and it aids in formulating analytic expressions that are capable of characterizing these optical phenomena. The study also extends to the examination of transverse symmetry breaking, which is a phenomenon observed in the laser beam as it traverses the oblique interface of the prism. It is essential to underscore that this analytical overview does not strive to function as an exhaustive literature review of these optical phenomena. Instead, its primary objective is to provide a comprehensive and self-referential treatment, as well as give universal analytical formulas intended to facilitate experimental validations or applications in various technological contexts. This paper proposes a classification methodology aimed at identifying correlations between job ad requirements and transversal skill sets, with a focus on predicting the necessary skills for individual job descriptions using a deep learning model. The approach involves data collection, preprocessing, and labeling using ESCO (European Skills, Competences, and Occupations) taxonomy. Hierarchical classification and multi-label strategies are used for skill identification, while augmentation techniques address data imbalance, enhancing model robustness. A comparison between results obtained with English-specific and multi-language sentence embedding models reveals close accuracy. The experimental case studies detail neural network configurations, hyperparameters, and cross-validation results, highlighting the efficacy of the hierarchical approach and the suitability of the multi-language model for the diverse European job market. In information transfer, the dissipation of a signal is of crucial importance. The feasibility of reconstructing the distorted signal depends on the related permanent loss. Therefore, understanding the quantized dissipative transversal mechanical waves might result in deep insights. In particular, it may be valid on the nanoscale in the case of signal distortion, loss, or even restoration. Based on the description of the damped quantum oscillator, we generalize the canonical quantization procedure for the case of the transversal waves. Then, we deduce the related damped wave equation and the state function. We point out the two possible solutions of the propagating-damping wave equation. One involves the well-known Gaussian spreading solution superposed with the damping oscillation, in which the loss of information is complete. The other is the Airy function solution, which is non-spreading–propagating, so the information loss is only due to oscillation damping. However, the structure of the wave shape remains unchanged for the latter. Consequently, this fact may allow signal reconstruction, resulting in the capability of restoring the lost information. The purpose of this research is to compare the bending behaviour of non-glue-laminated timber beams and glulams by full-scale four-point bending tests. The focus is on the non-glue beams laminated by different materials or techniques and then to determine their bending stiffness and failure modes. The laminating efficiency of various materials or techniques is underlined. The manufacturing process concerning non-glue-laminated timber beams has to be determined. As structural elements with large dimensions, such components require adaptable laminating and producing techniques. While the beams composed of wooden dowels refer to the dowel-laminated timber (DLT), those made of self-tapping screws (STSs) can be simply related to nail-laminated timber (NLT) products. Then, a full-scale four-point bending test was carried out to appraise 26 laminated beams, including non-glue- and glue-laminated timber. The results of the test demonstrated that the material, the spacing and the angle of the transversal fasteners significantly influence bending behaviour. The bending stiffness of the beams laminated by STSs was about 7.86% higher than the value of the beams with wooden dowels, although the tendency of each pair of beams did not remain convergent. Reducing the interval of the fasteners can considerably increase the bending stiffness of the beams. Fasteners inserted at 45 degrees, or in a so-called V-type pattern, contribute to improving bending stiffness, and both wooden dowels and STSs reveal the same tendency. At this angle, STSs demonstrate better laminating efficiency than wooden dowels. The STS beams' bending stiffness was about 48.6% of that determined for glulams. On the contrary, in beams with 135-degree fasteners, or, namely, an A-type pattern, inserted fasteners possessed lower bending stiffness than in those with 90-degree fasteners. In addition to the considerable bending stiffness, the STS beams revealed a stable response as far as their load-deflection curves were concerned. A comparison of experimental and theoretical results contributes to verifying the feasibility as well as the weakness of two analytic methods. In this work, the analysis of the acoustic emission (AE) signal in grinding processes is addressed. The proposed analysis method decomposes the acoustic signal into three frequency ranges. The total energy of each range is determined, as well as the highest frequency. Different grinding experiments were carried out, according to a full factorial design of experiments (DOE), in which feed speed, depth of cut, and transversal step (table cross feed) were varied. Arithmetic average roughness Ra and the material removal rate (MRR) were determined. It was observed that Ra depends mainly on the transversal step, followed by feed speed and the interaction between the transversal step and depth of cut, while MRR is greatly influenced by the transversal step. According to multi-objective optimization with the Derringer–Suich function, in order to simultaneously minimize Ra and maximize MRR, a transversal step of 9 mm per longitudinal pass, feed speed of 20 m/min, and depth of cut of 0.020 mm should be selected. RF photonic transversal signal processors, which combine reconfigurable electrical digital signal processing and high-bandwidth photonic processing, provide a powerful solution for achieving adaptive high-speed information processing. Recent progress in optical microcomb technology provides compelling multi-wavelength sources with a compact footprint, yielding a variety of microcomb-based RF photonic transversal signal processors with either discrete or integrated components. Although they operate based on the same principle, the processors in these two forms exhibit distinct performances. This paper presents a comparative investigation of their performances. First, we compare the performances of state-of-the-art processors, focusing on the processing accuracy. Next, we analyze various factors that contribute to the performance differences, including the tap number and imperfect response of experimental components. Finally, we discuss the potential for future improvement. These results provide a comprehensive comparison of microcomb-based RF photonic transversal signal processors implemented using discrete and integrated components and provide insights for their future development. Methods of increasing the bearing capacity of corrugated metal structures of transport constructions using transversal stiffening ribs in the form of additional corrugation and stiffeners are given. Based on the theory of elasticity, a mathematical model for estimating the stress-strain state of transport constructions made of corrugated metal structures reinforced with stiffening ribs in the form of double corrugation was developed. The method of determining equivalent forces during rolling stock passage is offered. It has been established that double corrugation increases the bearing capacity of corrugated metal structures. Therefore, additional corrugation of corrugated metal structures reduces stresses by up to 20% and deflections by 50%. The obtained results show that the increase in rolling stock speed does not lead to a significant increase in stresses and strains in CMS when the railway track corresponds to the design state. The clique transversal problem and its variants have garnered significant attention in the last two decades due to their practical applications in communication networks, social-network theory and transceiver placement for cellular telephones. While previous research primarily focused on determining the polynomial-time solvability or NP-hardness/NP-completeness of specific graphs, this paper adopts a parameterized-complexity approach. It thoroughly explores four clique transversal variants: the d-fold transversal problem, the { d } -clique transversal problem, the signed clique transversal problem and the minus clique transversal problem. The paper presents various findings regarding the parameterized complexity of the clique transversal problem and its variants. It establishes the W[2]-completeness and para-NP-completeness of the d-fold transversal problem, the { d } -clique transversal problem, the signed clique transversal problem and the minus clique transversal problem within specific graph classes. Additionally, it introduces fixed-parameter tractable algorithms for planar graphs and graphs with bounded treewidth, offering efficient solutions for these specific instances of the problems. The research further explores the relationship between planar graphs and graphs with bounded treewidth to enhance the time complexity of the d-fold clique transversal problem and the { d } -clique transversal problem. By analyzing the parameterized complexity of the clique transversal problem and its variants, this research contributes to our understanding of the computational limitations and potentially efficient algorithms for solving these problems. In this short note, we prove two properties of symplectic pairs on a four-manifold: firstly we prove that two transversal orientable foliations of codimension two, which are taut for the same Riemannian metric, are the characteristic foliations of a symplectic pair; secondly, we characterize intrinsically harmonic 2-forms of rank two as part of a symplectic pair. Debating represents an active teaching–learning method in higher education. Engaging in debates helps to acquire and develop transversal skills, which are essential to successfully function in personal, academic, and professional spheres. In this quantitative, descriptive, and explanatory study, we analyse how attitudes included within transversal competences were acquired through a debate activity conducted as a part of the social work programme at the University of Alicante. A total of 74 students participated, with an average age of 22.34 years, the majority of which were women. The students were divided into two evaluation groups: a peer evaluation group and a teacher evaluation group. Using an ad hoc questionnaire, three categories of variables were studied: sociodemographic variables; organisational and activity evaluation variables; and variables relating to the acquisition of attitudes. The results indicated that debating favoured communication, innovation and entrepreneurship, social commitment, critical thinking, information management, autonomy and self-regulation, as well as teamwork. Variations were also found according to the university admission modality and the evaluation agent. These results highlight not only how useful debating can be as a pedagogical tool, but also the need to consider different contextual factors when implementing debate activities in the context of university studies. This study is focused on the mechanical properties of WC-Co composites obtained via Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) using PA12 as a binder. The as-printed samples were thermally debonded and sintered, first in a vacuum, and then sinter-HIP (Hot Isostatic Pressure) at 1400 °C, using 50 bar Ar, which has led to relative densities up to 66%. Optical metallographic images show a microstructure consisting of WC, with an average grain size in the range of 1.4–2.0 µm, with isolated large grains, in a well-distributed Co matrix. The shrinkage of the samples was 43%, with no significant shape distortion. The printing direction of the samples significantly impacts the transversal rupture strength (TRS). Nevertheless, the mechanical strength was low, with a maximum of 612 MPa. SEM images of the fracture surface of TRS samples show the presence of defects that constitute the cause of the low measured values. The hardness values position the obtained composites in the medium coarse classical cemented carbides range. The results were also related to the amount of free Co after sintering, close to the initial one, as assessed by magnetic measurements, indicating a low degree of interaction with PA12 decomposition products. The aim of this study was to investigate buccolingual tooth movements (tipping/translation) in surgical and nonsurgical posterior crossbite correction. A total of 43 patients (f/m 19/24; mean age 27.6 ± 9.5 years) treated with surgically assisted rapid palatal expansion (SARPE) and 38 patients (f/m 25/13; mean age 30.4 ± 12.9 years) treated with dentoalveolar compensation using completely customized lingual appliances (DC-CCLA) were retrospectively included. Inclination was measured on digital models at canines (C), second premolars (P2), first molars (M1), and second molars (M2) before (T0) and after (T1) crossbite correction. There was no statistically significant difference (p > 0.05) in absolute buccolingual inclination change between both groups, except for the upper C (p < 0.05), which were more tipped in the surgical group. Translation, i.e., bodily tooth movements that cannot be explained by pure uncontrolled tipping, could be observed with SARPE in the maxilla and with DC-CCLA in both jaws. A two-trough parabolic-shaped concentrating photovoltaic solar collector with a vertical half-size 'phosphorus-passivated emitter rear totally diffused' bifacial cell string receiver was designed and built for household applications, with the aim of smooth the electrical 'duck curve'. The study consisted in testing the concentrating photovoltaic solar collector outdoors, under real weather conditions, for its daily electrical peak power and efficiency, as well as for its electrical transversal and longitudinal Incidence Angle Modifier direction. The outdoor testing measurements were conducted in a parabolic trough with low concentration coupled with a central vertical half-size 'phosphorus-passivated emitter rear totally diffused' bifacial cell string receiver. Furthermore, the electrical transversal Incidence Angle Modifier showed to be very delicate due to the position and outline of the receiver, which led to an electrical peak efficiency close to 10% at ±25° (i.e., for an electrical power output of around 49.3 W/m2). To validate the measured parameters, a ray-tracing software has been used, where the measured Incidence Angle Modifiers have a very good agreement with the simulated Incidence Angle Modifiers (e.g., deviation of <4%). Consequently, the concentrating solar collector met the objective of lowering the Photovoltaic cell stress and high radiation intensity, by shifting the electrical peak power at normal (e.g., at 0°) to higher incidence angles (e.g., ±25°); this aids the electrical demand peak shaving, by having the highest electrical power production displaced from the highest intensity solar radiation during the day. Simple Summary: The internal organ transformations associated with sexual maturity in the polychaete worm Platynereis dumerilii have not been systematically analyzed so far. In this study, we focused on the morphology of the longitudinal and transversal muscles in both anterior and posterior regions of the body to understand their transformation during maturation. We found that the longitudinal muscles were smaller and less dense after maturation and were strongly degraded. Moreover, we observed a profound remodeling of the transversal muscles in the posterior segments of both sexes, resulting in strong thickening. Accordingly, the entire musculature in the posterior segments was severely swollen. In addition, we discovered an enormous number of small, blind-ended blood vessels that completely penetrate the musculature in the posterior segments. The different degree of muscle remodeling between anterior and posterior segments reflects the specific tasks of the different body regions after sexual maturation. The anterior segments contain the gametes and thus the degradation of the muscles makes room for the germ cells. By contrast, the swollen muscles and the new blood vessels in the posterior segments coincide with the remodeling of the appendages in this body region into paddle-shaped swimming organs, allowing rapid swimming during nuptial dance and gamete release. Background: The external transformations associated with sexual maturation in Platynereis dumerilii (Audouin and Milne Edwards) are well studied, whereas the internal changes along the body axis have not been systematically analyzed. Therefore, we examined muscle morphology in body regions located anterior or posterior to the prospective atokous/epitokous border to generate a structural basis for internal transformations. Results: All dorsal and ventral longitudinal muscles were significantly reduced in size and density after sexual maturation and strongly atrophied, with the greatest decrease in the anterior segments of females. Despite the general reduction in size throughout the longitudinal muscles, we found a specific degradation mechanism for the posterior segments, which were characterized by the formation of secondary bundle-like fibrous structures. In addition, we observed a profound remodeling of the transversal muscles in the posterior segments of both sexes, apparently resulting in excessive thickening of these muscles. Accordingly, the entire transversal muscle complex was severely swollen and ultrastructurally characterized by a greatly increased number of mitochondria. As a possible trigger for this remodeling, we discovered an enormous number of small, blind-ending blood vessels that completely penetrated the longitudinal and transversal muscles in posterior segments. In addition, both the number of visceral muscles as well as their coelothelial covering were reduced during sexual maturation. Conclusions: We hypothesize that a possible reason for the secondary bundling of the longitudinal fibers, as well as the difference in size of the posterior transversal muscles, could be the high degree of posterior vascularization. The different degree of muscle remodeling thus depends on segmental affiliation and reflects the tasks in the motility of the different body regions after maturation. The strongest atrophy was found in the anterior segments, while signs of redifferentiation were encountered in posterior segments, supported by the vigorous growth of vessels supplying the transformed epitokous parapodia and associated muscles, which allows rapid swimming during swarming and gamete release. As planetary health education enters medical and health professional training, transversal implementation across curricula is critical in developing its full potential and enabling future health professionals to meet the social, environmental, and health challenges of current and future generations in an integrated manner. To advance the transversal implementation of planetary health education, our study proceeded through: (1) a sequence analysis of documents framing physiotherapy education to identify relevant nexus points; (2) an explorative implementation of planetary health into foundational anatomy and physiology modules identified as critical nexus points; (3) practical implementation during the 2021 autumn semester. Implementation in the operative foundations of healthcare education—anatomy and physiology—enables the emphasis of the ecological nature of human bodies and interconnection with our planetary environment. Musculoskeletal joints accentuate the relational nature of bodies highlighted across current research and traditional knowledges, as dynamically pervaded and in interaction with culture, technology, objects, ideas, plants, planets, etc. Teaching relational anatomies thus highlights planetary health as the transversal foundation of medical and healthcare education. Making this foundation more explicit will be critical for the transversal implementation of planetary health education and subsequent practice, as well as the fundamental shifts in our understanding of human lives and health they require. The method presented in this paper is developed to assess the parameters (the application moment and the magnitude of a velocity impulse) of a maneuver-like perturbation of motion of the center of mass of a spacecraft in a near-circular orbit. The assessment is based on the information on the spacecraft's trajectory before the maneuver and the optical observations of the spacecraft's angular position (right ascension and declination angles) after the maneuver. This study considers the cases of solely transversal (in-track) or transversal and radial components of the velocity increment vector. A single pair of the values of angles is used for the assessment of the single transversal maneuver parameters and two pairs are used in the other cases. The method also makes it possible to estimate the parameters of a continuous maneuver performed with low-thrust engines. For this case the property of its symmetry is used. The approach described in this article makes it possible to determine the spacecraft's orbit after the maneuver much faster and more accurately in comparison to traditional methods. This work demonstrates spectral dependencies of reflectivity and the transversal Kerr effect of a series of permalloy magnetoplasmonic crystals based on shallow lamellar diffraction gratings with a period of 500 nm, stripe's width of 250 nm, and diffraction stripes' heights of 28, 43, 67, and 88 nm. The fabricated magnetoplasmonic crystals show a monotonic increase of the transversal Kerr effect and the diffraction figure-of-merit with higher diffraction stripes. The maximum achieved modulation value of the transversal Kerr effect was found to be 0.78%, which can be further tuned by the periodicity and stripes width of the magnetoplasmonic crystals. In this paper, a new combinatorial structure is introduced for image encryption, which has an excellent encryption effect on security and efficiency. An n-transversal in a Latin square has the function of classifying all the matrix's positions, and it can provide a pair of orthogonal Latin squares. Employing an n-transversal of a Latin square, we can permutate all the pixels of an image group by group for the first time, then use two Latin squares for auxiliary diffusion based on a chaotic sequence, and finally, make use of a pair of orthogonal Latin squares to perform the second scrambling. The whole encryption process is "scrambling–diffusion–scrambling". The experimental results indicated that this algorithm passed various tests and achieved a secure and fast encryption effect, which outperformed many of the latest papers. The final information entropy was very close to 8, and the correlation coefficient was approximately 0. All these tests verified the robustness and practicability of the proposed algorithm. Metabolic disorders, mainly characterized as the marked alteration of the lipid and carbohydrate profile, in addition to the clinical presence of the direct consequences of these alterations, are pathological conditions that have considerably increased in prevalence in recent years. They are directly linked to the onset of various pathologies, including cancer, particularly breast cancer, and are hormone-responsive. Alongside the known conditions responsible for this scenario, such as nutrition and lifestyle in general, the importance of both the colonic microbiota and the various organs and systems is becoming increasingly evident. In fact, it is now evident that microbial dysbiosis plays a fundamental role in the onset of these metabolic disorders, and therefore how these conditions are indirectly responsible for the onset and progression of neoplasms. Indirect mechanisms such as an altered Firmicutes/Bacteroidetes ratio; the formation of metabolites such as short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs), in particular, butyrate, which is capable of acting as a tumor suppressor; and the glucuronidase activity of estroboloma (bacteria responsible for estrogen metabolism) are just some of the most important mechanisms that contribute to the history of breast cancer. It is therefore understandable that in clinical terms, it is essential to associate the modulation of metabolic disorders and the microbial conditions that contribute to generating them with common therapies, preferably using compounds and solutions that are effective and acceptable for the patient without side effects. Nutraceuticals such as berberine (active both in metabolic scenarios and in the microbiota) and interventions modulating the microbial structure such as the use of probiotics and prebiotics seem to be ideal solutions for these preventive and no-longer-ignorable strategies in the light of numerous data now present in the literature. One of the most urgent scientific needs from a technical and economic engineering point of view is the assessment of concrete structures suffering corrosion deterioration. However, the pursuit of this target in the case of corroded prestressed concrete (PC) members is hindered by the lack of (i) consolidated simplified formulations to be used in the engineering daily practice and (ii) works investigating the uncertainties in the correlation between the damage induced by corrosion and the structural resistance. To this aim, the present study adopts a 3D-scanning technique for the pitting morphology evaluation of several corroded prestressing strands retrieved from 10-year-old PC beams. First, the probabilistic distributions of penetration depths have been investigated. Second, the pitting factors α and Ωi have been proposed and discussed to quantify the level of corrosion in longitudinal and transversal direction, respectively. Finally, correlations have been derived between the maximum and average penetration depth as a function of the level of corrosion and the surface defects mapping has been carried out on the corroded PC beams. The results show that the penetration depth of strands subjected to chloride-induced corrosion can be best fitted by a lognormal distribution function. Additionally, the simultaneous consideration of longitudinal and transversal pitting factor is found out to be essential for an exhaustive comprehension of pitting corrosion. Simple Summary: Annual tooth rasping is integral to prophylaxis work in equine dentistry. The procedure begins with a thorough examination of the oral cavity, including assessment of incisor occlusal surface angles. Any dental misalignment should be corrected or reduced to prevent abnormal forces from acting on teeth and supporting tissues and to maximize functionality of the masticatory apparatus. Thus far, clinical methods for dental angle assessment are scarce and not validated in terms of data reproducibility and comparability. These parameters are vital to objectively assess treatment needs and outcome, obtain population data, and establish data comparability among studies. However, this is the first study systematically validating a commercial dental angle measuring device. The data indicate high device performance and its applicability in practice. Incisor malocclusions are common in horses. As yet, an evidence-based understanding of incisor occlusal surface angle dynamics and normocclusal range is missing. Orthodontic measuring devices could help unravel this information objectively but imply measurement validation. We evaluated intra- and interexaminer variability of repeated sagittal and transversal incisor occlusal surface angle measures using a commercial orthodontic gauge device (MaPHorse1). Five examiners (two experienced, three inexperienced) measured six cadaver heads on 2 consecutive days in a blinded block-randomization design, resulting in 16 measures per examiner*head. Sagittal and transversal angle measures revealed low intraexaminer variability at scale-level independent mean SDs of α 0.58° and α 0.69°, respectively. Sagittal angle measures associate with low interexaminer variability, showing small mean angle differences (max. α 0.51° ± 0.35°), small scatter, and more consistent data reproducibility. Despite comparable mean interexaminer differences, the spread of transversal angle measures was relevantly higher using the proposed landmarks (average 2.2-fold higher interquartile range). The measurement performance of experienced and inexperienced examiners did not systematically differ. The time required for individual measurements was already comparable after 24/96 repetitions. Classification of gait disorders in cerebral palsy (CP) remains challenging. The Winters, Gage, and Hicks (WGH) is a commonly used classification system for unilateral CP regarding the gait patterns (lower limb kinematics) solely in the sagittal plane. Due to the high number of unclassified patients, this classification system might fail to depict all gait disorders accurately. As the information on trunk/pelvic movements, frontal and transverse planes, and kinetics are disregarded in WGH, 3D instrumented gait analysis (IGA) for further characterization is necessary. The objective of this study was a detailed analysis of patients with unilateral CP using IGA taking all planes/degrees of freedom into account including pelvic and trunk movements. A total of 89 individuals with unilateral CP matched the inclusion criteria and were classified by WGH. Subtype-specific differences were analyzed. The most remarkable findings, in addition to the established WGH subtype-specific deviations, were pelvic obliquity and pelvic retraction in all WGH types. Furthermore, the unclassified individuals showed altered hip rotation moments and pelvic retraction almost throughout the whole gait cycle. Transversal malalignment and proximal involvement are relevant in all individuals with unilateral CP. Further studies should focus on WGH type-specific rotational malalignment assessment (static vs. dynamic, femoral vs. tibial) including therapeutic effects and potential subtype-specific compensation mechanisms and/or tertiary deviations of the sound limb. Background: During prosthodontic treatment, the averaged values of the transversal condylar inclination (TCI) and the sagittal condylar inclination (SCI) are used for articulator settings. This study evaluated different parameters of measurable mandibular movements according to skeletal classes. Methods: Seventy-five patients (mean age 30.8 ± 5.49) had a condylography using the Cadiax Compact device (Gamma Dental, Klosterneuburg, Austria) and cephalometric analysis performed. Statistical analysis was performed using R statistical software. Results: There was no statistical evidence to state that the value of SCI angle is different in I compared to II Skeletal Class. There were no statistically significant differences when comparing the I vs. III and II vs. III Skeletal Class. The lowest mean SCI angle values were found in subjects with Skeletal Class III. There were statistically significant differences in left-sided TCI between Class I and II. There was a statistically significant linear relationship between ANB angle value and SCI value. Conclusions: Due to the wide individual variation in SCI and TCI values, it is advisable to use individual measurable parameters of mandibular movements during prosthetic reconstructions. The statistically significant relationship between SCI and ANB angle can be used to individualize the articulating parameters, especially in significant skeletal disproportions. Faced with the continuous changes that today's society presents, educational policies place entrepreneurial education and, therefore, the promotion of the entrepreneurial spirit, as the axis on which to articulate effective responses for the current socio-educational context. The need to train students in key aspects that will enable them to face the main difficulties that future labor and social future bring is the focus of attention of the educational environment. In this sense, we set out to find out how entrepreneurial education affects the identity formation of pre-university students in the Spanish context through the pedagogical and environmental factors present in an entrepreneurial education programme. The methodology used is based on qualitative research, which under an interpretative approach, has been assisted by quantitative and evaluative research on educational programmes, in order to try to respond to research objectives. The findings of this research lead us to consider entrepreneurial education in the pre-university environment as effective for the configuration of entrepreneurial identity in students, which facilitates an encouraging future for university students participating in these programmes, who will present an improved entrepreneurial identity that enables them to face forthcoming social, economic and labor reconfigurations. An ultrawideband rectangular waveguide to microstrip line transition operating at the whole LMDS and Ka band is presented. The transition is based on exciting three overlapped transversal patches that radiate into the narrow wall of the waveguide, making the design feasible to be used in λ g / 2 spaced phased arrays. Both top-side and bottom-side versions were designed and compared to show their differences. They were validated by means of a manufactured back-to-back (B2B) configuration, with a measured fractional bandwidth of 21.2% (top-side) and 23% (bottom-side). We are living in times of great transformations within the field of education and the labor market. These changes are connected and have to do with an expanded knowledge society, whose implications reach the levels of employability in times of uncertainty. Within this framework, the main purpose of our study is to perform a theoretical analysis and an empirical approach to the influence that transversal competences (soft skills) may have on the degree of employability of university students. We have identified some of those competences and we have tested them with a sample of 83 employers and 1249 students using a Likert scale. Our results show the interest of employers in the mastery of transversal competences and inequalities in terms of students' perception thereof. We did not find any significant differences between students starting their degree and those who were about to complete it. However, we did find differences between the students who participated in experiential activities and those who did not, in favor of the former. Due to the importance of experiential learning in our results, we dedicate our discussion to theoretically exploring whether the pedagogical approach of Service-Learning (SL) might contribute to a better connection between transversal competences and employability. Although organisations seek professionals with flexible and varied skills, universities often underestimate the importance of cross-curricular skills. Cantilevers generate statically determined force systems. The frontal segment loading with symmetric and asymmetric cantilevers in a three-piece intrusion base arch can be used to correct midline asymmetry. Three types of 0.017″ × 0.025″ beta-titanium cantilevers: tip-back (TB), deep curve (DC), utility arch (UA) were tested on typodonts simulating intrusion of the maxillary anterior segment. Typodonts with symmetric and asymmetric cantilevers were scanned with intraoral scanner (3Shape, TRIOS, Copenhagen, Denmark) before (T0) and after (T1) the experiment, scans were superimposed using Mimics software (Materialise, Leuven, Belgium). Data were analysed with qualitative analysis. All cantilevers generated vertical and horizontal forces. For symmetric design, the DC and TB displayed intrusive force with retrusive component, UA intrusion and protrusion. The asymmetric cantilevers produced transverse displacement of anterior segment. DC created lateral, UA medial force, the anterior segment displacement was consistent with the used configuration. The movement of an anterior segment with TB is smaller compared to DC and UA. Symmetric cantilevers configurations can achieve simultaneous intrusion and retrusion or protrusion of the anterior segment. The asymmetric design with transversal force can clinically aid the correction of midline discrepancies. The effect of the cantilever configuration on delivered force direction was confirmed. The aim of this article is to provide a systematic review of the transversal competencies for employability in university graduates from an employer's perspective, with consideration to the importance of the topic in the cross-national context. The PRISMA statement was used to guide the methodology and the reporting for the systematic review. The data collection produced 52 articles from the Scopus and Web of Science (JCR only) databases in the ten years between 2008 and 2018. The analysis focused on the characteristics of the employers and organizations, the methods and the instruments for evaluating transversal competencies, and the most highly valued competencies, both internationally and by continent. One of the main contributions is the creation of a classification that is made up of 41 transversal competencies that are grouped into five dimensions. The results show that employers attributed more importance to the competencies in the dimensions of Job-related basic (JRB) skills, Socio-relational (SR) skills, and Self-management (SM) skills. We conclude that Higher education institutions need to incorporate "pedagogies for employability", which will strengthen the link between the academic setting and the socio-occupational reality and will ensure that graduates make a suitable transition to the world of work. For a dissimilar laser weld, the model of the heat source is a paramount boundary condition for the prediction of the thermal phenomena, which occur during the welding cycle. In this paper, both two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Gaussian heat sources were studied for the thermal analysis of the fiber laser welding of titanium and aluminum dissimilar butt joint. The models were calibrated comparing the fusion zone of the experiment with that of the numerical model. The actual temperature during the welding cycle was registered by a thermocouple and used for validation of the numerical model. When it came to calculate the fusion zone dimensions in the transversal section, the 2D heat source showed more accurate results. Detection of morphological stress symptoms through 3D examination of plants might be a cost-efficient way to avoid yield losses and ensure product quality in agricultural and horticultural production. Although the 3D reconstruction of plants was intensively performed, the relationships between morphological and physiological plant responses to salinity stress need to be established. Therefore, cucumber plants were grown in a greenhouse in nutrient solutions under three salinity treatments: 0, 25, and 50 mM NaCl. To detect stress-induced changes in leaf transversal and longitudinal angles and dimensions, photographs were taken from plants for 3D reconstruction through photogrammetry. For assessment of physiological stress responses, invasive leaf measurements, including the determination of leaf osmotic potential, leaf relative water content, and the leaf dry to fresh weight ratio, were performed. The transversal and longitudinal leaf dimensions revealed statistically significant differences between stressed and control plants after 60 °Cd (day 3) for the leaves which appeared before stress imposition. Strong correlations were found between the transversal width and some investigated physiological traits. Higher Education plays a decisive role in the training of competent professionals and active, responsible and critical-thinking citizens. In addition to acquiring rigorous technical–scientific knowledge specific to their degree, students are also expected to develop a range of transversal skills essential for a successful academic and professional career. This article aims to narrate an experience of obtaining a Social Education degree. Since its origins, it has been assumed that students in this field should: (a) acquire specific technical–scientific knowledge; (b) get to know themselves as individuals; and (c) develop a set of transversal skills essential to relationships, some of the most salient being active listening, empathic capacity, acceptance and respect for others, trust, curiosity, creativity, confidentiality and a reflective attitude. It thus aggregates a set of Curricular Units whose main purpose is the personal, social and professional development of students, formed within active methodologies. Sociodrama is one such methodology of teaching and learning in the context of two Curricular Units of this degree, and this article focuses on my experience lived within the scope of these units. Since higher education qualifications and digital transition are considered key factors for economic development and individual opportunities, distance learning has been presented as a solution to improve the labor force's skills and employability. However, such links were seldom studied systematically in specific contexts, and doubts exist regarding online programs. Based on the results of three successive follow-up surveys to the graduates of the Portuguese distance learning public university (Universidade Aberta), from 2011 to 2018 (n = 1358), our article examines the graduates' perception of acquired transversal competences, in relation to employability and social mobility gains. The statistical analysis points out a positive perception of transversal competences development, especially analytical capacity, autonomy, and communication, although some concerns were raised regarding digital skills, teamwork, job search skills, and social capital. The impacts on employability and socioeconomic mobility are positive for most students, but variable according to analyzed competences, and tend to occur mostly through internal mobility rather than through job search skills or entrepreneurship. Although exploratory, such findings allow some final considerations regarding the effective ability of higher education distance learning to enhance economic growth and employability, through transversal competences, as well as to sketch some suggestions to improve such ability. Vibrations of slender structures associated with the external flow present a design challenge for the energy production systems placed in the marine environment. The current study explores the accuracy of the semi-empirical wake oscillator models for vortex-induced vibrations (VIV) based on the optimization of (a) the damping term and (b) empirical coefficients in the fluid equation. This work investigates the effect of ten fluid damping variations, from the classic van der Pol to more sophisticated fifth-order terms, and prediction of the simplified case of the VIV of transversally oscillating rigid structures provides an opportunity for an extended, comprehensive comparison of the performance of tuned models. A constrained nonlinear minimization algorithm in MATLAB is applied to calibrate considered models using the published experimental data, and the weighted objective function is formulated for three different mass ratios. Comparison with several sources of published experimental data for cross-flow oscillations confirms the model accuracy in the mass ratio range. Originally conceived as a thought experiment, an apparatus consisting of two Stern–Gerlach apparatuses joined in an inverted manner touched on the fundamental question of the reversibility of evolution in quantum mechanics. Theoretical analysis showed that uniting the two partial beams requires an extreme level of experimental control, making the proposal in its original form unrealizable in practice. In this work, we revisit the above question in a numerical study concerning the possibility of partial-beam recombination in a spin-coherent manner. Using the Suzuki–Trotter numerical method of wave propagation and a configurable, approximation-free magnetic field, a simulation of a transversal Stern–Gerlach interferometer under ideal conditions is performed. The result confirms what has long been hinted at by theoretical analyses: the transversal Stern–Gerlach interferometer quantum dynamics is fundamentally irreversible even when perfect control of the associated magnetic fields and beams is assumed. Locally strictly convex surfaces in four-dimensional affine space are studied from a perspective of the affine structure invented by Nuño-Ballesteros and Sánchez, which is especially suitable in convex geometry. The surfaces that are embedded in locally strictly convex hyperquadrics are classified under assumptions that the second fundamental form is parallel with respect to the induced connection and the normal connection is compatible with a metric on the transversal bundle. Both connections are induced by a canonical transversal plane bundle, which is defined by certain symmetry conditions. Background: A dynamic training approach close to clinical work and research is highly requested by health sciences students. The aim of this paper is to present the organizational model of a student-promoted and student-managed surgical congress that encourages the acquisition of transversal competencies among the students in charge of the organization of the Congress. Methods: A two-day surgical congress for medical students organized by themselves was held. Each day comprised two separate sections corresponding to different surgical specialties; sections included three types of activities: conferences, round tables with guest professors, and practical workshops. Once the Congress had finished, an online survey was carried out to evaluate 10 items scored from 1 to 4. To assess the acquisition of transversal competences among the students organizing the congress, three evaluations were carried out by the professor involved in the organization of the congress. Results: The congress had great acceptance among the students, filling 150 available places with an attendance rate of 100%. The survey showed a high assessment of the subjects (3.48/4), conferences (3.48/4) and workshops (3.27/4). Evaluation of the round tables was significantly lower (2/4). A total of 99% considered the congress to have been useful in its formation process and 100% would recommend it. The grade of transversal competences among the students organizing the congress showed a significant increase between the first and the third evaluation, being between 1.24 and 7.25 times higher. Conclusions: the student-led student surgical congress is a well-evaluated activity for medical students, and promotes, among its organizers, the acquisition of transversal competences. The ability to stimulate mammalian cells with light, brought along by optogenetic control, has significantly broadened our understanding of electrically excitable tissues. Backed by advanced (bio)materials, it has recently paved the way towards novel biosensing concepts supporting bio-analytics applications transversal to the main biomedical stream. The advancements concerning enabling biomaterials and related novel biosensing concepts involving optogenetics are reviewed with particular focus on the use of engineered cells for cell-based sensing platforms and the available toolbox (from mere actuators and reporters to novel multifunctional opto-chemogenetic tools) for optogenetic-enabled real-time cellular diagnostics and biosensor development. The key advantages of these modified cell-based biosensors concern both significantly faster (minutes instead of hours) and higher sensitivity detection of low concentrations of bioactive/toxic analytes (below the threshold concentrations in classical cellular sensors) as well as improved standardization as warranted by unified analytic platforms. These novel multimodal functional electro-optical label-free assays are reviewed among the key elements for optogenetic-based biosensing standardization. Rolling technology based on arc-shaped rollers is a novel method for rapid manufacturing of 3D curved parts. The method uses a pair of arc-shaped rollers (a convex roller and a concave roller) as forming tools, forming an unevenly distributed roll gap. The sheet metal has both transverse bending and longitudinal uneven extension during rolling, so that surface parts with double curvature are processed. The curvature of the formed surface part can be changed by changing the rolling reduction. Changing the vertical distance between the rollers will cause the overall change of the roll gap height, which will inevitably have a great impact on the forming effect of formed 3D curved parts. In this paper, a finite element model and experiment with different rolling reductions was designed; the influence of rolling reduction on the bending deformation and shape accuracy of formed 3D curved parts was studied. The results show that, with the slight increase of rolling reduction (from 0.04 to 0.12 mm), the longitudinal bending deformation of the formed 3D curved part increases significantly, but its transversal bending is almost not affected. When the maximum rolling reduction is 0.04 and 0.06 mm (the corresponding minimum rolling reduction is less than or equal to zero), the shape accuracy of the formed 3D curved parts is not good enough; when the maximum rolling reduction is greater than 0.06 mm (the corresponding minimum rolling reduction is greater than zero), the shape accuracy of the formed 3D curved parts is significantly better. This indicates that, for the rolling of 3D curved parts based on arc-shaped rollers, ensuring that the minimum rolling reduction is greater than zero is the key to ensuring good shape accuracy of the formed 3D curved parts. Additive manufacturing of polymers has evolved from rapid prototyping to the production of functional components/parts with applications in distinct areas, ranging from health to aeronautics. The possibility of producing complex customized geometries with less environmental impact is one of the critical factors that leveraged the exponential growth of this processing technology. Among the several processing parameters that influence the properties of the parts, the geometry (shape factor) is amid less reported. Considering the geometric complexity of the mouth, including the uniqueness of each teething, this study can contribute to a better understanding of the performance of polymeric devices used in the oral environment for preventive, restorative, and regenerative therapies. Thus, this work aims to evaluate 3D printed poly(ε-caprolactone) mechanical properties with different build orientations and geometries. Longitudinal and transversal toolpaths produced specimens with parallelepiped and tubular geometry. Moreover, as it is intended to develop devices for dentistry, the influence of artificial saliva on mechanical properties was determined. The research concluded that the best mechanical properties are obtained for parallelepiped geometry with a longitudinal impression and that aging in artificial saliva negatively influences all the mechanical properties evaluated in this study. This paper proposes a modified dynamic equivalent circuit model for a linear induction motor considering both longitudinal end effect and transverse edge effect. The dynamic end effect (speed-dependent end effect) is based on conventional Duncan's approach. The transverse edge effect is investigated by using three correction factors applied to the secondary resistance and magnetizing inductance. Moreover, the iron saturation effect, the skin effect, and the air-gap leakage effect are incorporated into the proposed model by using the field-analysis method. A new topology of the steady-state and space-vector model of linear induction, regarding all mentioned phenomena, is presented. The parameters of this model are calculated using both field analysis and the finite-element method. The steady-state performance of the model is first validated using the finite-element method. Additionally, the dynamic performance of the proposed model is studied. The results prove that the proposed equivalent circuit model can precisely predict the dynamic and steady-state performances of the linear induction. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
