Herein, two CeO2 samples dominantly decorated with surface and bulk sulfates were constructed and their distinct effects on high-temperature NH3-SCR were investigated by strictly controlling the sulfate content at a comparable level. The obtainment of surface and bulk sulfates was revealed using a designed leaching experiment, and further evidenced by the characterization results from XPS and H2-TPR. In comparison with CeO2 modified with bulk sulfates (B-CeS), sufficient acid sites with strong intensity were generated on CeO2 modified with surface sulfates (S-CeS). In addition, due to electron-withdrawing effect from S=O in sulfate species, NH3 oxidation over S-CeS was greatly suppressed, providing an additional contribution to enhanced performance in high-temperature NH3-SCR. The application of iron oxide to NH3-SCR is attractive but largely hindered by its poor acid properties, and surface sulfation is proven to be a prominent way of enhancing the acidity. As such, the method of enriching the sulfate species on iron oxide is crucial for improving the NH3-SCR performance. In the present study, by employing ammonium bisulfate (ABS) as the source of gaseous SO2 for the purpose of trapping, we reported an effective strategy for enhancing the SO42− immobilization on α-Fe2O3 catalyst via spatial confinement in a mesoporous SBA-15 framework. Interestingly, although the presence of the mesopore channel had an adverse effect on the ABS decomposition, which was expected to produce less available SO2, the measured SO42− immobilized on α-Fe2O3 in the mesoporous SBA-15 system was significantly greater than that of the regular SiO2, demonstrating the promoting effect of the spatial confinement on the SO42− enrichment. Further characterizations of the NH3-TPD, NO oxidation, and NH3-SCR performance tests proved that, as a result of the enhanced acidity, the enrichment of SO42− on α-Fe2O3 displayed a clear correlation with the SCR activity. Monolithic Mn-Fe-Ce-Al-O catalyst with honeycomb cordierite ceramic as a carrier was reported for the first time for low temperature deNOx application. In the reaction of selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO with NH3, a NO conversion of above 80% at 100 °C was obtained. Notably, the catalyst also showed excellent resistance against SO2 and H2O. About 60% NO conversion was maintained after successive operation in the mixed stream of SO2 and H2O for 168 h. The Brunner−Emmet−Teller (BET) measurement, SEM, EDS, thermogravimetric analysis (TG), FT-IR, and XPS results of the used catalysts indicated that certain amounts of ammonium sulfate was formed on the surface of the catalyst. XPS results revealed that partial of Fe2+ was oxidized to Fe3+ during the reaction process, and Fe2+ species have strong redox ability, which can explain the decrease in activity after reaction. In addition, SO2 and H2O induced a transformation of Ce from Ce4+ to Ce3+ on the surface of the catalyst, which increased the amount of chemisorbed oxygen. Owing to these factors, the addition of Ce and Fe species contributes to excellent resistance of the catalyst to SO2 and H2O. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Pt, as a common cocatalyst, has been widely used in photocatalytic H2 evolution. However, the specific role of Pt in photocatalytic H2 evolution has not been thoroughly studied. In this paper, by employing three Pt sources with different charges (positive, negative and neutral), we systematically studied the charge effect of Pt sources on photocatalytic H2 evolution via TiO2 catalyst. According to the results of Raman, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), recycle experiments and photocurrent characterizations, it was found that TiO2 would produce electropositive defects during photocatalytic H2 evolution, inevitably leading to the decline of H2 production activity. Thanks to the electrostatic interaction, the electronegative Pt source not only promoted charge separation, but preferential deposited on electropositive defects, which acted as the defect repair agent, and thus resulted in the increased photocatalytic stability.
