Organic matter in the water environment can enhance either flocculation or stabilization and, thus, controls the fate and transportation of cohesive sediments and causes seasonal variation in the turbidity of river water, determining floc morphology and settling velocity. The aim of this study was to elucidate the way that biological factors change the organic matter composition and enhances either flocculation or stabilization in different seasons. Jar test experiments were performed using a mixture of standard kaolinite and the filtered river water samples collected (bi-)weekly or monthly from April to December 2015 upstream a constructed weir in Nakdong River, to estimate the flocculation potential of the seasonal river water samples. Chlorophyll-a concentration, algae number concentration, and the fluorescence characteristics of organic matter were used to represent the biological factors. Our results revealed that flocculation potential depended not only on the algal population dynamics, but also the origins (or chemical composition) of organic matter in the river water. Extracellular polymeric substances (EPS), as algal organic matter, enhanced flocculation, while humic substances (HS), as terrestrial organic matter, enhanced stabilization, rather than flocculation. Since flocculation potential reached its maximum around the peaks of algal population, algae-produced EPS likely enhanced flocculation by binding sediment particles in the flocs. This observation supports previous findings of seasonal variation in EPS production and EPS-mediated flocculation. However, when HS was transported from the surrounding basin by a heavy rainfall event, cohesive sediments tended to be rather stabilized. Supplementary flocculation potential tests, which were performed with artificial water containing refined EPS and HS, also showed the opposing effects of EPS and HS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Multidimensional hydrodynamic modelling becomes tricky when lacking the bathymetric data representing the continuous underwater riverbed surface. Light detection and ranging (LiDAR)-based and radar-based digital elevation models (DEMs) are often used to build the high-accuracy floodplain topography, while in most cases the submerged riverbed could not be detected because both radar and LiDAR operate at wavelengths that cannot penetrate the water. Data from other sources is therefore required to establish the riverbed topography. The inundated river channel is often surveyed with an echo sounder to obtain discrete cross-section data. In this context, an improved algorithm based on the classic flow-oriented coordinates transformation is proposed to generate the riverbed topography using surveyed cross-sections. The dimensionless channel width (DCW) processing method is developed within the algorithm to largely increase the prediction accuracy, especially for the meandering reaches. The generated riverbed topography can be merged with the floodplain DEM to create an integrated DEM for 2D and 3D hydrodynamic simulations. Two case studies are carried out: a benchmark test in the Baxter River, United States, with carefully surveyed channel–floodplain topographic data to validate the algorithm, and a 3D hydrodynamic modelling-based application in Three Gorges Reservoir (TGR) area, China. Results from the benchmark case demonstrate very good consistency between the created topography and the surveyed data with root mean square error (RMSE) = 0.17m and the interpolation accuracy was increased by 55% compared to the traditional method without DCW processing. 3D hydrodynamic modelling results match the observed field data well, indicating that the generated DEM of the TGR area was good enough not only to predict water depths along the tributary, but also to allow the hydrodynamic model to capture the typical features of the complex density currents caused by both the topography of the tributary estuary and the operation rules of TGR. PROBA-V (Project for On-Board Autonomy-Vegetation) is a global vegetation monitoring satellite. The spectral quality of the data and the coverage of PROBA-V over coastal waters provide opportunities to expand its use to other applications. This study tests PROBA-V data for the retrieval of turbidity in the North Sea region. In the first step, clouds were masked and an atmospheric correction, using an adapted version of iCOR, was performed. The resulted water leaving radiance reflectance was validated against AERONET-OC stations, yielding a coefficient of determination of 0.884 in the RED band. Next, turbidity values were retrieved using the RED band. The PROBA-V retrieved turbidity data was compared with turbidity data from CEFAS Smartbuoys and ad-hoc measurement campaigns. This resulted in a coefficient of determination of 0.69. Finally, a time series of 1.5 year of PROBA-V derived turbidity data was plotted over MODIS data to check consistencies in both datasets. Seasonal dynamics were noted with high turbidity in autumn and winter and low values in spring and summer. For low values, PROBA-V and MODIS yielded similar results, but while MODIS seems to saturate around 50 FNU, PROBA-V can reach values up till almost 80 FNU. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
