Over the past two decades, the use of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) inhibitors has significantly improved the treatment of patients with immune-mediated inflammatory diseases. Firstly, introduced for rheumatoid arthritis, these inhibitors are currently approved and used for a variety of conditions, including ankylosing spondylitis, Crohn's disease, juvenile idiopathic arthritis, psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, ulcerative colitis, and chronic uveitis. Despite their immense therapeutic efficacy, TNF-α inhibitors have been associated with neurological adverse effects that bring new clinical challenges. The present review collects data from multiple studies to evaluate the incidence and the relationship between TNF-α inhibitors and neurological side effects and to explore the potential underlying mechanisms of this association. Moreover, it highlights the importance of patient selection, particularly in the case of individuals with a history of demyelinating diseases, raises awareness for clinicians, and calls for ongoing research that will improve TNF-α targeting strategies and offer safer and more effective therapeutic options. This paper brings new information regarding the influence of partial replacement of portland cement with nano silica and mesoscopic ZnO powders in terms of mechanical and antimicrobial properties. The experimental results demonstrate a reduced growth of the opportunistic pathogens Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and Candida albicans and an alteration of monospecific biofilm formation when exposed to the cement pastes modified with these additions. The coexistence of silica and ZnO powders modifies the kinetics of portland cement hydration and hardening processes, as well as the nature and composition of resulting compounds. While ZnO powder initially delays the hydration and hardening of portland cement, the addition of nano silica helps alleviate this delay and improves the compressive strengths. The main properties (mechanical strengths and antibacterial properties) of the cement pastes and derived composites (mortars) are assessed and statistically processed to identify the optimum dosage of each component. These materials could be of a particular interest for buildings exposed to conditions favoring microbial colonization, especially health-care facilities where the microbial load of antibiotic resistant and biofilm species is high. Clozapine and its metabolites require close therapeutic monitoring (TDM) in patients due to poor correlation between the administrated doses and resulting plasma concentrations, the narrow therapeutic interval, high inter-individual variability, and the risk of serious side effects once toxic levels are exceeded. The aim of the study was to develop a simple (relatively cheap) LC-UV method for the quantification of clozapine and its metabolites in plasma and urine samples. For sample preparation, liquid-liquid extraction (LLE) in n-octanol was more efficient and less limiting in injection volumes compared to the in-situ formation of SUPRAS. When analyzing urine, an alkalinization step before extraction was required. The proposed method produced linear concentration responses with/without internal standard (IS) for the target analytes, with LLOQs within the targeted range of 50 ppb and %RSD within the acceptable 15% range. Quadrupedal robots are confronted with the intricate challenge of navigating dynamic environments fraught with diverse and unpredictable scenarios. Effectively identifying and responding to obstacles is paramount for ensuring safe and reliable navigation. This paper introduces a pioneering method for 3D object detection, termed viewpoint feature histograms, which leverages the established paradigm of 2D detection in projection. By translating 2D bounding boxes into 3D object proposals, this approach not only enables the reuse of existing 2D detectors but also significantly increases the performance with less computation required, allowing for real-time detection. Our method is versatile, targeting both bird's eye view objects (e.g., cars) and frontal view objects (e.g., pedestrians), accommodating various types of 2D object detectors. We showcase the efficacy of our approach through the integration of YOLO3D, utilizing LiDAR point clouds on the KITTI dataset, to achieve real-time efficiency aligned with the demands of autonomous vehicle navigation. Our model selection process, tailored to the specific needs of quadrupedal robots, emphasizes considerations such as model complexity, inference speed, and customization flexibility, achieving an accuracy of up to 99.93%. Background: Adrenal tumors are a common finding in clinical practice, and only detailed evaluation may reveal secretory and metabolic abnormalities or their malignant character. We aimed to highlight epidemiological data, rates of malignancy, clinical or secretory characteristics, and the cardiometabolic implications of adrenal masses. Methods: We conducted a retrospective analysis using data from the medical files of 474 patients with adrenal pathology hospitalized between January 2007 and January 2020, before the COVID-19 pandemic, using the ICD-10 codes. After applying inclusion and exclusion criteria, a total of 264 patients with adrenal tumors were enrolled in the study. Patients underwent clinical examination, abdominal imaging, and hormonal evaluation, and some of them underwent a pathological exam after adrenalectomy. Results: Median age at diagnosis was 56 (17) years, with 81.06% of patients being female. The median follow-up period was 41.5 (70) months, ranging from 6 months to 13 years. Adrenal tumors were most frequently seen in older female patients, with 83.47% of them being over 40 years old. The malignancy rate was 4.54%. Hormonally nonfunctioning tumors (71.95%) predominated, and overt hypercortisolism was present in 10.61% of patients, as was mild autonomous cortisol secretion in 5.31% of patients, primary hyperaldosteronism in 8.71% of patients, and adrenal paraganglioma in 3.41% of patients. Cardiometabolic comorbid conditions were similar in patients with functioning and nonfunctioning tumors. Conclusions: All patients with adrenal tumors should receive a complete hormonal workup and detailed malignancy risk assessment. Even though a hormonally active tumor predisposes to cardiometabolic comorbid conditions, a nonfunctioning lesion may also be associated with such disorders and needs thorough assessment. Background: Bone density is affected by age- and sex-related changes in the os coxae, often known as the pelvic bone. Recent developments in computed tomography (CT) imaging have created new opportunities for quantitative analysis, notably regarding Hounsfield Units (HU). Objectives: The study aims to investigate the possibility of using HU obtained from os coxae CT scans to estimate age in the Romanian population. Methods: A statistical analysis was conducted on a sample of 80 pelvic CT scans in order to find any significant correlation between age, sex, and variation in density among the different pelvic bone locations of interest. According to the research, pelvic radiodensity measurements varied significantly between male and female participants, with men having greater levels. This technique may be valuable for determining an individual's sex precisely, as evidenced by the substantial association found between HU levels and changes in bone density associated with sex. Results: The analysis of variance underscores that HU values exhibit a significant negative relationship with radiodensity, with a general trend of decreasing HU with increasing age. The equation derived from the ordinary least squares OLS regression analysis can be used to estimate the age of individuals in the Romanian population based on their HU values at specific pelvic sites. Conclusions: In conclusion, the application of HU analysis in CT imaging of the coxae represents a non-invasive and potentially reliable method for age and sex estimation, and a promising avenue in the field of human identification. An understanding of the mechanical behavior of polymeric materials is crucial for making advancements in the applications and efficiency of nanocomposites, and encompasses their service life, load resistance, and overall reliability. The present study focused on the prediction of the mechanical behavior of biopolymeric nanocomposites with nano-clays as the nanoadditives, using a new modeling and simulation method based on Comsol Multiphysics software 6.1. This modeling considered the complex case of flake-shaped nano-clay additives that could form aggregates along the polymeric matrix, varying the nanoadditive thickness, and consequently affecting the resulting mechanical properties of the polymeric nanocomposite. The polymeric matrix investigated was biopolyamide 11 (BIOPA11). Several BIOPA11 samples reinforced with three different contents of nano-clays (0, 3, and 10 wt%), and with three different nano-clay dispersion grades (employing three different extrusion screw configurations) were obtained by the compounding extrusion process. The mechanical behavior of these samples was studied by the experimental tensile test. The experimental results indicate an enhancement of Young's modulus as the nano-clay content was increased from 0 to 10 wt% for the same dispersion grades. In addition, the Young's modulus value increased when the dispersion rate of the nano-clays was improved, showing the highest increase of around 93% for the nanocomposite with 10 wt% nano-clay. A comparison of the modeled mechanical properties and the experimental measurements values was performed to validate the modeling results. The application of extended reality (XR) technology in education has been growing for the last two decades. XR offers immersive and interactive visualization experiences that can enhance learning by making it engaging. Recent technological advances have led to the availability of high-quality and affordable XR headsets. These advancements have spurred a wave of research focused on designing, implementing, and validating XR educational interventions. Limited literature focuses on the recent trends of XR within science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education. Thus, this paper presents an umbrella review that explores the exploding field of XR and its transformative potential in STEM education. Using six online databases, the review zoomed in on 17 out of 1972 papers on XR for STEM education, published between 2020 and 2023, following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) guidelines. The results highlighted the types of XR technology applied (i.e., virtual reality and augmented reality), the specific STEM disciplines involved, the focus of each study reviewed, and the major findings from recent reviews. Overall, the educational benefits of using XR technology in STEM education are apparent: XR boosts student motivation, facilitates learning engagement, and improves skills, for example. However, using XR in education still has challenges that must be addressed, such as the physical discomfort of the learner wearing the XR headset and technical glitches. Besides revealing trends of using XR in STEM education, this umbrella review encourages reflection on current practices and suggests ways to apply XR to STEM education effectively. Introduction. The Fat Mass and Obesity-Associated (FTO) gene encodes a demethylase, which modulates RNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) and plays a regulatory role in adipocyte differentiation and the pathogenesis of human obesity. Methods. To understand the potential role of FTO in osteoporosis (OP), we investigated five single nucleotide variations (SNVs) in intron 1 (rs8057044, rs8050136, rs9939609, rs62033406, and rs9930506) of the FTO gene, and a missense SNV i.e., rs3736228 (A1330V), located in exon 18 of the LRP5 gene, in a cohort of postmenopausal women (n = 188) from Central Europe. Genotyping was performed with an allele discrimination assay, while haplotypes were reconstructed in the population by PHASE 2.1. Results. The rs9930506 was strongly associated with OP (p < 0.0035), which was supported by Bonferroni correction (p < 0.0175), and all SNVs located in the FTO gene were more strongly associated with severe OP with fragility fractures. Among seventeen haplotypes detected for the FTO gene, two haplotypes (H1 and H9) were frequent (frequency > 10%) and distributed in three main haplotypes pairs (H1/H1, H1/H9 and H9/H9, respectively). The pathogenic pair H1/H9 was associated with a leaner phenotype, increased fracture risk, and a lower bone mineral density (BMD), and carried the heterozygous GA of rs9930506, while the protective pair H9/H9 was associated with an increased obesity risk and carried AA alleles of rs9939609. Conclusions. Concordant associations with OP, an increased fracture risk, and a lower BMD at all skeletal sites indicate that the FTO gene is a promising candidate for OP, explaining the complex relationship with obesity and offering new perspectives for the study of the epigenetic regulation of bone metabolism. The current study evaluated the effect of powder fractionation based on particle size on the chemical composition of macronutrients such as proteins and sugars, on the phytochemical properties (total content of polyphenolic compounds, vitamin C, and antioxidant activity), on preservation capacity (water activity), powder functional properties (water absorption capacity and water solubility index), and physicochemical properties (particle size distribution and moisture content) of blackthorn berry (Prunus spinosa) powders. The fruits were separated from the plant material and seeds, dried, and then ground using an universal mill for dry materials. Eight fractions were obtained after sieving on sieves with different mesh sizes, such as 1 mm, 0.8 mm, 0.630 mm, 0.450 mm, 0.315 mm, 0.200 mm, and 0.125 mm. The grinding/sieving procedure was effective in separating Prunus spinosa powder into sufficiently different size classes. The maximal moisture content and water activity were 5.61% and 0.250, respectively, showed good preservation from a microbiological point of view, and ensured the prevention of oxidation of biologically active compounds of blackthorn berry powders. For samples with reduced particle sizes, the powder functional properties were greatly improved. The total phenolic content, carbohydrates, and antioxidant activity showed significantly different values for some particle size classes compared to the un-sieved sample. A considerable content of vitamin C was presented in the fraction with large particle sizes, precisely because they did not undergo intense degradation processes. Therefore, the technique of grinding and successive sieving proved effective in enhancing the physicochemical and functional characteristics of powdered blackthorn berries, particularly for smaller particles. (1) Background: Burn injuries in children present a significant public health concern due to their potential for severe physical and psychological impact. (2) Methods: This study investigates the determinants of pediatric burn severity by analyzing the interplay of demographic and environmental factors. Through a retrospective analysis of pediatric burn cases over five years, encompassing patient demographics, burn causative agents, and clinical outcomes, this research aims to identify significant predictors of burn severity. (3) Results: This study presents a comprehensive analysis of pediatric burn injuries, focusing on the severity, clinical outcomes, and multifactorial aspects influencing recovery. We reviewed 1498 pediatric burn cases from January 2015 to December 2020. The mean age of patients was 5.8 years, with a slight male predominance (54%). Scalds (45%), flame burns (30%), and contact burns (15%) were the most common burn types. Our findings indicate significant differences in burn severity based on TBSA, with 32.5% of cases having TBSA greater than 20%. Multivariate logistic regression identified rural residence, male gender, flame burns, and lower socioeconomic status as significant predictors of severe burn outcomes. The overall mortality rate was 2.5%, with higher rates among patients with TBSA greater than 40%. These results highlight the need for targeted prevention strategies and improved access to specialized burn care. This paper presents the computational design, fabrication, and control of a novel 3-degrees-of-freedom (DOF) soft parallel robot. The design is inspired by a delta robot structure. It is engineered to overcome the limitations of traditional soft serial robot arms, which are typically low in structural stiffness and blocking force. Soft robotic systems are becoming increasingly popular due to their inherent compliance match to that of human body, making them an efficient solution for applications requiring direct contact with humans. The proposed soft robot consists of three soft closed-loop kinematic chains, each of which includes a soft actuator and a compliant four-bar arm. The complex nonlinear dynamics of the soft robot are numerically modeled, and the model is validated experimentally using a 6-DOF electromagnetic position sensor. This research contributes to the growing body of literature in the field of soft robotics, providing insights into the computational design, fabrication, and control of soft parallel robots for use in a variety of complex applications. This study presents issues related to electromagnetic pollution and the level of magnetic field radiation occurring around conductors used for electricity transmission and distribution. The fact that modeling and simulation are the most efficient methods of optimization, considering the cost–benefit ratio, was the premise of this work. This paper proposes the performance of a complex analysis, carried out in a comparative manner, which includes physical tests and simulations in the existing field around transmission and distribution cables used in transformer substations. In the first stage, the level of the magnetic field existing near the conductor carried by an electric current was tested (measured), and a virtual model was then designed to simulate the field in conditions similar to those of the test. The results obtained from the simulation were analyzed in comparison with those obtained by testing. The maximum permissible limits of exposure to an electromagnetic field, which are regulated by Government Decision HG 520/2016 of 20 July 2016 and Directive 2013/35/EU of the European Parliament and of the Council of 26 June 2013, were used as the reference to formulate conclusions for both situations considered. These comparisons were intended to determine the level of exposure to electromagnetic fields existing in places where electricity transmission/distribution conductors are located. Energy sustainability exists due to the versatile properties of the conductors, with the energy transmission and distribution network being functional regardless of the source of energy production. Our purpose was to compare repeatability between ROI and VOI DKI-derived diffusion measurements and assess DKI accuracy in discriminating among pediatric PF tumors. Materials and methods: We retrospectively analyzed 34 children (M, F, mean age 7.48 years) with PF tumors who underwent preoperative examination on a 3 Tesla magnet, including DKI. For each patient, two neuroradiologists independently segmented the whole solid tumor, the ROI of the area of maximum tumor diameter, and a small 5 mm ROI. The automated analysis pipeline included inter-observer variability, statistical, and machine learning (ML) analyses. We evaluated inter-observer variability with coefficient of variation (COV) and Bland–Altman plots. We estimated DKI metrics accuracy in discriminating among tumor histology with MANOVA analysis. In order to account for class imbalances, we applied SMOTE to balance the dataset. Finally, we performed a Random Forest (RF) machine learning classification analysis based on all DKI metrics from the SMOTE dataset by partitioning 70/30 the training and testing cohort. Results: Tumor histology included medulloblastoma (15), pilocytic astrocytoma (14), and ependymoma (5). VOI-based measurements presented lower variability than ROI-based measurements across all DKI metrics and were used for the analysis. DKI-derived metrics could accurately discriminate between tumor subtypes (Pillai's trace: p < 0.001). SMOTE generated 11 synthetic observations (10 EP and 1 PA), resulting in a balanced dataset with 45 instances (34 original and 11 synthetic). ML analysis yielded an accuracy of 0.928, which correctly predicted all but one lesion in the testing set. Conclusions: VOI-based measurements presented improved repeatability compared to ROI-based measurements across all diffusion metrics. An ML classification algorithm resulted accurate in discriminating PF tumors on a SMOTE-generated dataset. Obesity is a worldwide increasing concern. Although in adults this is easily estimated with the body mass index, in children, who are constantly growing and whose bodies are changing, the reference points to assess weight status are age and gender, and need corroboration with complementary data, making their quantification highly difficult. The present review explores the interaction spectrum of oxidative stress, selenium status, and obesity in children and adolescents. Any factor related to oxidative stress that triggers obesity and, conversely, obesity that induces oxidative stress are part of a vicious circle, a complex chain of mechanisms that derive from each other and reinforce each other with serious health consequences. Selenium and its compounds exhibit key antioxidant activity and also have a significant role in the nutritional evaluation of obese children. The balance of selenium intake, retention, and metabolism emerges as a vital aspect of health, reflecting the complex interactions between diet, oxidative stress, and obesity. Understanding whether selenium status is a contributor to or a consequence of obesity could inform nutritional interventions and public health strategies aimed at preventing and managing obesity from an early age. This paper primarily presents statistics on the variation of physical characteristics (dimensions and mass) for the coulter discs of double-disc seeders. This statistic was calculated based on actual measurements of the probability density and cumulative probability for the mass of the discs, their average thickness, and outer diameter. These parameters (m = 4000 g, g = 4 mm, D = 380 mm) are tracked from the design phase to the actual realization phase, being the parameters specified in the purchase phase by users from agricultural machinery distributors. The standard deviation and deviation from the mean for a cumulative normal (Gaussian) distribution were calculated, and an analysis was made for the decrease of the mentioned parameters in discs already used for sowing cereals on an area of 80 hectares, due to the wear that appeared as a trace of the contact with the soil and the abrasive wear caused by it. Testing of disk parameters using both logarithmic and Gaussian distributions was performed, and test results are presented through appropriate graphs. With small deviations (which appeared for known or unknown reasons), it can be stated that the distribution of the mentioned parameters is generally a normal-type distribution. If the new discs are 15″ in diameter, experts recommend that they be replaced when they reach a diameter of less than 14.5 inches. This article aims to highlight the influencing factors on omni-channel consumer attitudes towards virtual shopping channels, providing the literature with a new conceptual model that studies the use of technology by omni-channel consumers. The research hypotheses were established based on the literature review, and a conceptual model was defined. Quantitative research was carried out on an emerging market through the survey technique to verify the relations between the investigated concepts. In total, 307 responses from Millennials and Generation Z members were analyzed using structural equations modeling in SmartPLS. The results show that both channel and consumer characteristics, alongside their media contexts, influence the attitude and willingness to access and use retail channels. To keep up with constantly changing consumer needs, companies are advised to continually analyze the target market and implement any necessary measures. Background: A measurable feature of the efficiency of vehicle use in transportation companies is the revenue from transport orders, which has a significant impact on their profitability. Therefore, it is important to skillfully analyze the parameters related to the operation of vehicles and their impact on the bottom line. Transportation companies, when managing their operations, take steps to reduce operating costs. The above makes a large number of studies available in the literature on the analysis of vehicle damage or wear of system components, as well as ways to predict them. However, there is a lack of studies treating the impact of the parameters of specific orders on economic efficiency, which is a research niche undertaken in the following study. Methods: The purpose of this article was to analyze the economic efficiency of vehicle operation in terms of the financial security of enterprises. The main research problem was formulated in the form of the question of how the various parameters of a transport order affect its profitability. During our study, critical analysis of the literature, mathematical modeling and inference were used. A detailed analysis of transport orders executed by SMEs (small and medium-sized enterprises), which are characterized by a fleet of light commercial vehicles with a capacity of up to 3.5 t, was carried out in the FMCG (Fast-Moving Consumer Good) industry in Poland in 2021–2022. Due to the binary variable form, a logistic regression model was elaborated. The estimated parameters of the model and the calculated odds ratios made it possible to assess the influence of the selected factors on the profitability of orders. Results: Among other things, it was shown that in the case of daily vehicle mileage, the odds quotient indicates that with each additional kilometer driven, the probability of profitability of an order increases by 1%. Taking into account the speed of travel, it is estimated that with an increase in its value by 1 km/h, the probability of profitability of an order decreases by 3%. On the other hand, an increase in cargo weight by 1 kg makes the probability of a profitable order increase by 9%. Conclusion: Through this study, the limited availability of low-cost analytical tools that can be applied during transportation fleet management in SME companies was confirmed, as was the use of simple and non-expansive mathematical models. At the same time, they are not "black boxes" and therefore enable drawing and implementing model conclusions into operations. The results obtained can help shape the overall strategy of companies in the area of vehicle operation and can support the decision-making process related to the management of subsequent orders, indicating those that will bring the highest profit. Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) techniques are based on either subtractive (milling prefabricated blocks) or additive (3D printing) methods, and both are used for obtaining dentistry materials. Our in vitro study aimed to investigate the behavior of human gingival fibroblasts exposed to methacrylate (MA)-based CAD/CAM milled samples in comparison with that of MA-based 3D-printed samples to better elucidate the mechanisms of cell adaptability and survival. The proliferation of human gingival fibroblasts was measured after 2 and 24 h of incubation in the presence of these samples using a 3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide assay, and the membrane integrity was assessed through the lactate dehydrogenase release. The level of reactive oxygen species, expression of autophagy-related protein LC3B-I, and detection of GSH and caspase 3/7 were evaluated by fluorescence staining. The MMP-2 levels were measured using a Milliplex MAP kit. The incubation with MA-based 3D-printed samples significantly reduced the viability, by 16% and 28% from control after 2 and 24 h, respectively. There was a 25% and 55% decrease in the GSH level from control after 24 h of incubation with the CAD/CAM milled and 3D-printed samples, respectively. In addition, higher levels of LC3B-I and MMP-2 were obtained after 24 h of incubation with the MA-based 3D samples compared to the CAD/CAM milled ones. Therefore, our results outline that the MA-CAD/CAM milled samples displayed good biocompatibility during 24-h exposure, while MA-3D resins are proper for short-term utilization (less than 24 h). Metal nanoparticle phytosynthesis has become, in recent decades, one of the most promising alternatives for the development of nanomaterials using "green chemistry" methods. The present work describes, for the first time in the literature, the phytosynthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) using extracts obtained by two methods using the aerial parts of Marrubium vulgare L. The extracts (obtained by classical temperature extraction and microwave-assisted extraction) were characterized in terms of total phenolics content and by HPLC analysis, while the phytosynthesis process was confirmed using X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy, the results suggesting that the classical method led to the obtaining of smaller-dimension AgNPs (average diameter under 15 nm by TEM). In terms of biological properties, the study confirmed that AgNPs as well as the M. vulgare crude extracts reduced the viability of human gingival fibroblasts in a concentration- and time-dependent manner, with microwave-assisted extracts having the more pronounced effects. Additionally, the study unveiled that AgNPs transiently increased nitric oxide levels which then decreased over time, thus offering valuable insights into their potential therapeutic use and safety profile. Nosocomial infections represent a major threat within healthcare systems worldwide, underscoring the critical need for materials with antimicrobial properties. This study presents the development of polyurethane foam embedded with silver nanoparticles (PUF/AgNPs) using a rapid, eco-friendly, in situ radiochemical synthesis method. The nanocomposites were characterized by UV–vis and FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray technique (SEM/EDX), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile and compression strengths, antimicrobial activity, and foam toxicity tests. The resulting PUF/AgNPs demonstrated prolonged stability (over 12 months) and good dispersion of AgNPs. Also, the samples presented higher levels of hardness compared to samples without AgNPs (deformation of 1682 µm for V1 vs. 4307 µm for V0, under a 5 N force), tensile and compression strength of 1.80 MPa and 0.34 Mpa, respectively. Importantly, they exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against a broad range of bacteria (including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Enterococcus faecalis) and a fungal mixture (no fungal growth on the sample surface was observed after 28 days of exposure). Furthermore, these materials were non-toxic to human keratinocytes, which kept their specific morphology after 24 h of incubation, highlighting their potential for safe use in biomedical applications. We have developed an innovative thin-film nanocomposite membrane that contains cellulose acetate (CA) with small amounts of TiO2-decorated graphene oxide (GO) (ranging from 0.5 wt.% to 2 wt.%) sandwiched between two polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE)-like thin films. The PTFE-like films succeeded in maintaining the bulk porosity of the support while increasing the thermal and chemical robustness of the membrane and boosting the catalytic activity of TiO2 nanoparticles. The membranes exhibited a specific chemical composition and bonding, with predominant carbon–oxygen bonds from CA and GO in the bulk, and carbon–fluorine bonds on their PTFE-like coated sides. We have also tested the membranes' photocatalytic activities on azithromycin-containing wastewaters, demonstrating excellent efficiency with more than 80% degradation for 2 wt.% TiO2-decorated GO in the CA-GO-TiO2/PTFE-like membranes. Introduction. Osteoporosis (OP) affects 30% of postmenopausal women, often complicated by metabolic syndrome (MetS) with a still controversial role. We aimed to characterize MetS and its components in relation to bone mineral density (BMD), body mass index (BMI), and insulin resistance. Methods. Patients (n = 188) underwent DEXA scans, spine X-rays, and metabolic and hormonal investigations, including bone biomarkers, muscular strength, and physical performance tests, while insulin resistance was evaluated by the Homeostasis Model Assessment (HOMA-IR). Results. Patients with a normal BMD or osteopenia (n = 68) and with OP (n = 120) displayed 51.5% and 30.8% of MetS, but without differences in insulin resistance. When BMD was studied as a function of the cumulative MetS criteria and centiles of BMI, lower levels of BMD were observed beyond an inflection point of 27.2 kg/m2 for BMI, allowing for further stratification as lean and overweight/obese (OW/OB) subjects. In contrast with lean individuals (n = 74), in OW/OB patients (n = 46), MetS was associated with HbA1c (p < 0.0037, OR 9.6, 95% CI [1.64–55.6]) and insulin resistance (p < 0.0076, OR 6.7, 95% CI [1.49–30.8]) in the context where BMD values were lower than those predicted from BMI in non-OP subjects. In OP patients with fragility fractures (31% of MetS), glycemia also appeared to be the dominant factor for MetS (p < 0.0005, OR 4.1, 95% CI [1.63–10.39]). Conclusions. These data indicate a detrimental effect of insulin resistance in MetS on OP patients, while the prevalence of the syndrome depends on the proportion of obesity. These findings provide new insights into the pathogenic role of MetS and reveal the need to consider different strata of BMI and insulin resistance when studying postmenopausal OP. The aim of this study was the investigation of biochemical and histological changes induced in different tissues, as a result of the subcutaneous administration of Gd nanohydrogels (GdDOTA⸦CS-TPP/HA) in a CD-1 mouse strain. The nanohydrogels were obtained by encapsulating contrast agents (GdDOTA) in a biocompatible polymer matrix composed of chitosan (CS) and hyaluronic acid (HA) through the ionic gelation process. The effects of Gd nanohydrogels on the redox status were evaluated by measuring specific activities of the antioxidant enzymes catalase (CAT), glutathione peroxidase (GPx), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), as well as oxidative stress markers, such as reduced glutathione (GSH), malondialdehyde (MDA), advanced oxidation protein products (AOPP), and protein-reactive carbonyl groups (PRCG), in the liver, kidney, and heart tissues. The nitrosylated proteins expression were analyzed with Western Blot and the serum biochemical markers were measured with spectrophotometric methods. Also, a histological analysis of CD-1 mouse tissues was investigated. Buried depressed-cladding waveguides were fabricated in 0.7-at.% Nd:Ca3Li0.275Nb1.775Ga2.95O12 (Nd:CLNGG) and 7.28-at.% Yb:CLNGG disordered laser crystals grown by Czochralski method. Circular waveguides with 100 μm diameters were inscribed in both crystals with picosecond (ps) laser pulses at 532 nm of 0.15 μJ energy at 500 kHz repetition rate. A line-by-line writing technique at 1 mm/s scanning speed was used. Laser emission at 1.06 μm (with 0.35 mJ pulse energy) and at 1.03 μm (with 0.16 mJ pulse energy) was obtained from the waveguide inscribed in Nd:CLNGG and Yb:CLNGG, respectively, employing quasi-continuous wave pumping with fiber-coupled diode lasers. The waveguide realized in RE3+-doped CLNGG crystals using ps-laser pulses at high repetition rates could provide Q-switched or mode-locked miniaturized lasers for a large number of photonic applications. Hyssop (Hyssopus officinalis L.) and oregano (Origanum vulgare L.), traditionally used for their antimicrobial properties, can be considered viable candidates for nanotechnology applications, in particular for the phytosynthesis of metal nanoparticles. The present work aims to evaluate the potential application of hyssop and oregano for the phytosynthesis of silver nanoparticles, as well as to evaluate the biological activities of their extracts and obtained nanoparticles (antioxidant potential, as well as cell viability, inflammation level and cytotoxicity in human fibroblasts HFIB-G cell line studies). In order to obtain natural extracts, two extraction methods were applied (classical temperature extraction and microwave-assisted extraction), with the extraction method having a major influence on their composition, as demonstrated by both the total phenolic compounds (significantly higher for the microwave-assisted extraction; the oregano extracts had consistently higher TPC values, compared with the hyssop extracts) and in terms of individual components identified via HPLC. The obtained nanoparticles ware characterized via X-ray diffraction (XRD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), with the lowest dimension nanoparticles being recorded for the nanoparticles obtained using the oregano microwave extract (crystallite size 2.94 nm through XRD, average diameter 10 nm via TEM). The extract composition and particle size also influenced the antioxidant properties (over 60% DPPH inhibition being recorded for the NPs obtained using the oregano microwave extract). Cell viability was not affected at the lowest tested concentrations, which can be correlated with the nitric oxide level. The microbiota–gut–brain axis has received increasing attention in recent years through its bidirectional communication system, governed by the ability of gut microorganisms to generate and regulate a wide range of neurotransmitters in the host body. In this research, we delve into the intricate area of microbial endocrinology by exploring the dynamic oscillations in neurotransmitter levels within plasma and brain samples. Our experimental model involved inducing hyperthyroidism in mice after a "probiotic load" timeframe using two strains of probiotics (Lactobacillus acidophilus, Saccharomyces boulardii, and their combination). These probiotic interventions continued throughout the experiment and were intended to uncover potential modulatory effects on neurotransmitter levels and discern if certain probiotic strains exhibit any protection from hyperthyroidism. Moreover, we aimed to outline the eventual connections between the gut microbiota and the hypothalamus–pituitary–thyroid axis. As our study reveals, there are significant fluctuations in crucial neurotransmitters within the hyperthyroidism model, related to the specific probiotic strain or combination. These findings could support future therapeutic approaches, help healthcare professionals choose between different probiotic therapies, and also allow us proceed with caution when administering such treatments, depending on the health status of hyperthyroid patients. The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs) were introduced in 2015 to advance the 2030 Agenda of sustainable development in all supporting countries. The SDGs are applicable to countries, non-governmental organizations, industries, and companies. In this article, we focus on the contribution of listed companies headquartered in the European Union (EU) to the SDGs. The EU intends to be the front-runner in the race for sustainable development and has adopted comprehensive strategies that mirror the UN SDGs. For this reason, we collected relevant data points from the Refinitiv Eikon database for 1156 companies headquartered in EU countries for the financial year 2022. The data collected refer to contributions to each SDG and the adoption of corporate sustainability policies. Data were statistically analyzed per country and sector to generate a comprehensive image of industry contributions to the SDGs in the EU. By applying a comparative analysis of country-level achievements and policies, the results point to four EU countries that are significant contributors to the SDGs through their economic activities. At the same time, other EU countries are still facing significant challenges in this domain. The socioeconomic considerations for these cases are laid out in the Discussion section. Broncho-esophageal fistula (BEF) is a severe yet relatively rare connection between the bronchus and esophagus usually caused by esophageal and pulmonary malignancies. We present a case report of a 49-year-old man diagnosed with terminal lung carcinoma who developed a BEF. The thoracic computed tomography scan detected a mass in the left bronchi that partially covers and disrupts the bronchial contour in certain regions and extends to the esophageal wall. After thoroughly evaluating alternative treatment approaches, we opt for the stenting procedure due to the advanced stage of the tumor and the significantly diminished quality of life. The treatment involves the use of a partially covered metal stent that is known to exhibit lower potential to migrate. The treatment is highly successful, resulting in a significant enhancement of the patient's quality of life, a lengthening in his survival, and the ability to pursue additional palliative treatment options. In contrast to the typical prosthesis implantation, our procedure uses a direct endoscopic visualization for the proximal deployment of a partially covered stent, offering a cost-effective and radiation-free alternative that can be particularly beneficial for BEF patients in facilities without radiology services. The proposed strategy for the extrusion of printable composite filaments follows the favourable association of biogenic hydroxyapatite (HA) and graphene nanoplatelets (GNP) as reinforcement materials for a poly(lactic acid) (PLA) matrix. HA particles were chosen in the <40 μm range, while GNP were selected in the micrometric range. During the melt–mixing incorporation into the PLA matrix, both reinforcement ratios were simultaneously modulated for the first time at different increments. Cylindrical composite pellets/test samples were obtained only for the mechanical and wettability behaviour evaluation. The Fourier-transformed infrared spectroscopy depicted two levels of overlapping structures due to the solid molecular bond between all materials. The aim of the present study is to assess the impact of structural capital intensity and utilization on firm profitability in an international setting: the European Union countries, plus Norway, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. The indicators are calculated based on financial data downloaded from the Refinitiv Eikon database. Two financial ratios are used as proxies for the intensity and utilization of structural capital. The balanced panel consists of 625 companies from 25 countries, over the period from 2013 to 2022. The panel includes financial information on two industries that are considered innovation-oriented, namely technology and healthcare. Alternative model specifications are proposed to test the robustness of the basic model, including dynamic models (with lagged dependent variables). The present study indicates that a higher proportion of structural capital (intangible assets, excluding goodwill) is a negative factor for company profitability in the technology and healthcare sectors. There is no indication that a more intense use of intangible assets and more investments in R&D positively contribute to company profitability in the respective industries, for a large sample of listed companies. A higher proportion of intangible assets, as reported in financial statements, is possibly related to inefficiencies in the management of structural capital. The inverse relationship between profitability and investments in intangible assets is likely due to failures in cost accounting. Vacuum degassing of seeds is a basic preliminary stage of the treatment process to improve the viability of seeds of various crops. In this work, the degassing process of corn seeds was experimentally and numerically analyzed by removing air or other gases from around the seeds, specifically from the seed coating, in a rough vacuum chamber. Two complementary variants were employed to understand and optimize this process to improve the quality and germination rate of the seeds. The average germination percentage on the first day was about 98%, and the germination speed of 5.0 days. Several experiments were conducted with well-established durations of 10 min and masses of 5 kg and masses of corn seeds at different temperatures to observe and record the behavior of the system, facilitating the modeling of the degasification process in the vacuum compartment. Modeling the degasification operation in the vacuum chamber allowed for determining the pressure profiles on the vacuum chamber and its lid. Numerical simulations were either conducted using a simulation program developed in the Visual Basic Applications (VBA) language for Microsoft Excel to model the degassing process in the vacuum chamber or with the assistance of specialized software (transient structural analysis and simulation program in the ANSYS Workbench environment). Statistical analysis of the correlation between experimental and estimated pressure values revealed that both the proposed mathematical model and the solution method are well-chosen, with differences expressed through the absolute error (EA) being very small, only 1.425 mbar. Structural dynamic analysis carried through the Finite Element Method (FEM) highlights that the chosen materials for manufacturing the vacuum chamber vessel (316 stainless steel—yield strength 225 MPa and tangent modulus 2091 MPa) or the chamber lid (transparent acrylic plastic—yield strength 62.35 MPa and shear modulus 1445.3 MPa) are durable and capable of withstanding the desired pressure and temperature demands in the seed treatment process. Additionally, through structural dynamic analysis, it was possible to study the deformation of system components, providing a detailed perspective on their structural distribution. Thus, the paper aims to improve the quality and survival/germination rate of corn seeds as an important step to improve corn yield through simulations and analyses (numerical and experimental) of the vacuum corn seed degassing system. Curcumin is a polyphenol of the Curcuma longa plant, which can be used for various medicinal purposes, such as inflammation and cancer treatment. In this context, two symmetric curcumin derivatives (D1—(1E,6E)-1,7-bis(4-acetamidophenyl)hepta-1,6-diene-3,5-dione and D2—p,p-dihydroxy di-cinnamoyl methane) were obtained by the microwave-based method and evaluated for their antitumoral effect on human cervix cancer in comparison with toxicity on non-tumoral cells, taking into account that they were predicted to act as apoptosis agonists or anti-inflammatory agents. The HeLa cell line was incubated for 24 and 72 h with a concentration of 50 μg/mL of derivatives that killed almost half of the cells compared to the control. In contrast, these compounds did not alter the viability of MRC-5 non-tumoral lung fibroblasts until 72 h of incubation. The nitric oxide level released by HeLa cells was higher compared to MRC-5 fibroblasts after the incubation with 100 μg/mL. Both derivatives induced the decrease of catalase activity and glutathione levels in cancer cells without targeting the same effect in non-tumoral cells. Furthermore, the Western blot showed an increased protein expression of HSP70 and a decreased expression of HSP60 and MCM2 in cells incubated with D2 compared to control cells. We noticed differences regarding the intensity of cell death between the tested derivatives, suggesting that the modified structure after synthesis can modulate their function, the most prominent effect being observed for sample D2. In conclusion, the outcomes of our in vitro study revealed that these microwave-engineered curcumin derivatives targeted tumor cells, much more specifically, inducing their death. Polyphenolic extracts from wild bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) have shown antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects, but they are prone to degradation when exposed to environmental factors, limiting their use in biomedical applications. To overcome this issue, this study proposed the embedding of wild bilberry fruit ethanolic extracts in pristine mesoporous silica functionalized with organic groups (mercaptopropyl and propionic acid), as well as coated with fucoidan, a biopolymer. Herein, we report a stability study of free and incorporated extracts in mesoporous silica-type supports in high-humidity atmospheres at 40 °C up to 28 days, using HPLC analysis, thermal analysis, and radical scavenging activity determination. Better chemical and thermal stability over time was observed when the extracts were incorporated in mesoporous silica-type supports. After 12 months of storage, higher values of antioxidant activity were determined for the extract embedded in the supports, silica modified with mercaptopropyl groups (MCM-SH), and fucoidan-coated silica (MCM-SH-Fuc) than that of the free extract due to a synergistic activity between the support and extract. All encapsulated extracts demonstrated remarkable effects in reducing NO production in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. The treatment with extract embedded in MCM-SH-Fuc in a dose of 10 μg/mL surpassed the effect of free extract in the same concentration. For the extract encapsulated in an MCM-SH support, a lower IC50 value (0.69 μg/mL) towards COX-2 was obtained, comparable with that of Indomethacin (0.6 μg/mL). Also, this sample showed a higher selectivity index (2.71) for COX-2 than the reference anti-inflammatory drug (0.98). This study explores the potential utilization of walstromite (BaCa2Si3O9) as a foundational material for creating new bioceramics in the form of scaffolds through 3D printing technology. To achieve this objective, this study investigates the chemical–mineralogical, morphological, and structural characteristics, as well as the biological properties, of walstromite-based bioceramics. The precursor mixture for walstromite synthesis is prepared through the sol–gel method, utilizing pure reagents. The resulting dried gelatinous precipitate is analyzed through complex thermal analysis, leading to the determination of the optimal calcination temperature. Subsequently, the calcined powder is characterized via X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy, indicating the presence of calcium and barium silicates, as well as monocalcium silicate. This powder is then employed in additive 3D printing, resulting in ceramic scaffolds. The specific ceramic properties of the scaffold, such as apparent density, absorption, open porosity, and compressive strength, are assessed and fall within practical use limits. X-ray diffraction analysis confirms the formation of walstromite as a single phase in the ceramic scaffold. In vitro studies involving immersion in simulated body fluid (SBF) for 7 and 14 days, as well as contact with osteoblast-like cells, reveal the scaffold's ability to form a phosphate layer on its surface and its biocompatibility. Bioceramics are the most promising materials used for hard tissue reconstruction. In this study, wollastonite/hydroxyapatite (HAp/WS)-type composite ceramic structures were synthesized with the aim of reaching a material with improved properties for use in bone tissue regeneration. The scaffolds were synthesized using a foam replica method, starting from ceramic powders with different mass ratios. These were subsequently studied and compared to identify the ideal mass ratio in terms bioactive character, appropriate mechanical properties, but also microstructural influence. The results indicate that all of the samples showed a highly porous microstructure with interconnected pores and high mineralization after 21 days of immersion in SBF. The porous structures with 90% and 70% mass contents of hydroxyapatite presented a well-defined structure and the highest values of mechanical compressive strength. Biocompatibility evaluation showed that osteoblast-like cells are able to penetrate the inner volume of the structures, exhibiting a biocompatible behavior in terms of morphological features and viability following 7 days of incubation. In recent years, nanoparticles have gained significant importance due to their unique properties, such as pharmacological, electrical, optical, and magnetic abilities, contributing to the growth of the science and technology sector. Particular naturally derived biomolecules with beneficial effects on menopause disorder have been the subject of studies of pharmaceutical formulation to obtain alternative pharmaceutical forms with increased bioavailability and without side effects, as in nanostructured lipid carriers (NLCs) loaded with such active ingredients. In the present study, one stage of a broader project, we have performed pharmacotoxicology studies for six combinatory innovative nanocapsule pharmaceutical forms containing active natural biomolecules before considering them as oral formulas for (1) in vitro toxicity studies on culture cells and (2) in vivo preclinical studies on a surgically induced menopause model of Wistar female rats, and the influence of the NLCs on key biochemical parameters: lipid profile (TG, Chol, HDL), glycemic markers (Gli), bone markers (Pac, Palc, Ca, phosphorus), renal markers (Crea, urea, URAC), inflammation (TNF), oxidative stress (GSH, MDA), and estrogen–progesterone hormonal profile. The micronucleus test did not reveal the genotoxicity of the tested compounds; the menopause model showed no significant safety concerns for the six tested formulas evaluated using the blood biochemical parameters; and the results showed the potential hypoglycemic, hypolipidemic, hypouricemic, and antioxidant potential of one of the tested formulas containing nano diosgenin and glycyrrhizic acid. The relationship between non-financial reporting quality (NFRQ) and various company-level factors has been studied extensively, considering the mandatory requirements applicable under the Non-Financial Reporting Directive 2014/95/EU (NFRD) of the European Union. The purpose of this research is to systematize the results of previous published studies on the relationship between NFRQ and company size, financial performance, corporate governance, market performance, and sustainability performance, under a mandatory regime. Our study contributes to the literature by proposing a taxonomy of company-level factors grouped into five categories. We analyze the post-2017 period, focusing on the application of NFRD in the European Union. By applying systematic inclusion and exclusion criteria to a population of 618 articles from Scopus, we obtain a sample of fifteen articles that are subject to an in-depth analysis of correlation matrices. The systematic review resorts to the vote counting methodology to assess the existence and strength of relationships between the NFRQ and company-level factors, based on correlation coefficients. The summarized results indicate that company size, corporate governance, and sustainability performance are positive factors of NFRQ. Regarding corporate governance, we find that board independence, board size, foreign ownership, gender diversity, corporate governance quality, the existence of a sustainability committee, and sustainability-linked remuneration positively influence NFRQ. Our findings emphasize the need to explicitly consider the role of corporate governance and sustainability performance in improving NFRQ while transitioning to improved corporate sustainability reporting under the new Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive 2022/2464 (CSRD). Our study has implications for academics who seek to engage in empirical research on various factors with positive or negative influence on sustainability reporting, throughout the transition from the NFRD to the CSRD. Policymakers may find our study useful in addressing specific areas of sustainability reporting that have a negative impact on corporate transparency, while practitioners may obtain valuable information on the challenges of transitioning to sustainability reporting and the implementation of mandatory assurance. The baking process in tunnel ovens can be influenced by many parameters. Among these, the most important can be considered as: the baking time, the volume of dough pieces, the texture and humidity of the dough, the distribution of temperature inside the oven, as well as the flow of air currents applied in the baking chamber. In order to obtain a constant quality of bakery or pastry products, and for the efficient operation of the oven, it is necessary that the solution made by the designers be subjected to modelling, simulation and analysis processes, before their manufacture, and in this sense it can be applied to the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) numerical simulation tool. In this study, we made an analysis of the air flow inside the baking chamber of an oven. The analyzed oven was used very frequently on the pastry lines. After performing the modelling and simulation, the temperature distribution inside the oven was obtained in the longitudinal and transverse planes. For the experimental validation of the temperatures obtained in the computer-assisted simulation, the temperatures inside the analyzed electric oven were measured. The current study presents research about electrodeposition in relation to electrospinning PCL wires on a Zr substrate and loading the coating with vancomycin. The structural composition of the coatings was investigated via FT-IR analysis. The morphology evaluated using scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, for the composition (SEM-EDS), evidenced the presence of the polymer wires, with and without drug vancomycin loading. The wettability of the coatings was evaluated from the hydrophobic–hydrophilic point of view, and the characterization was completed with mechanical and electrochemical tests. All the electrochemical tests performed in simulated body fluid highlighted that PCL represents a barrier against corrosion processes. The quantitative method to evaluate the loading efficiency shows that almost 80% of the total loaded vancomycin is released within 144 h; after the initial burst at 24 h, a steady release of vancomycin is observed over 7 days. Cancer patients have higher prevalences of antiphospholipid antibodies (aPLs), occasionally associated with thrombotic events. A cross-sectional study regarding the presence of criteria (IgG/IgM anti-cardiolipin-aCL, anti-β2 glycoprotein I-aβ2GPI) and non-criteria (IgG/IgM anti-phosphatidylserine-aPS, anti-phosphatidylethanolamine-aPE, anti-prothrombin-aPT) aPLs in 146 patients with involuntary weight loss was performed. None of the patients had thrombotic events during the study. Out of the 36 cancer patients, 33 had non-hematologic malignancies. In the cancer subgroup, 60% of the patients had at least one positive aPL, with significantly more patients being positive for aβ2GPI IgG compared with the non-cancer subgroup—p = 0.03, OR = 2.23 (1.02–4.88). When evaluating the titres, aCL IgG/IgM, aβ2GPI IgG, aPE IgG, and aPS IgG had significantly higher values in cancer patients, the best cancer predictor being aβ2GPI IgG—AUC 0.642 (0.542–0.742). Gastrointestinal cancer patients were studied separately, and aCL IgM positivity was significantly higher—p = 0.008, OR = 6.69 (1.35–33.02). Both the titres of aCL IgM (p = 0.006) and aPS IgM (p = 0.03) were higher in the gastrointestinal cancer subgroup, with aCL IgM being the best predictor for gastrointestinal cancer development—AUC 0.808 (0.685–0.932). Despite criteria and non-criteria aPLs being frequent in cancer, their connection with thrombosis in these patients is probably dependent on other important risk factors and needs further research. Composite hydrogels containing apatite-like particles can act as scaffolds for osteoblast proliferation, with applications in bone tissue engineering. In this respect, porous biocompatible hydrogels were obtained from chitosan, oxidized pullulan, and PVA in different ratios. The stability of the hydrogels was ensured both by covalent bonds between aldehyde groups of oxidized pullulan and free amino groups of chitosan, and by physical bonds formed during freeze–thaw cycles and lyophilization. The deposition of calcium phosphates was performed by alternate soaking of the porous hydrogels into solutions with calcium and phosphate ions, assuring a basic pH required for hydroxyapatite formation. The mineralized hydrogels were characterized using FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analysis, showing that inorganic particles containing between 80 and 92% hydroxyapatite were deposited in a high amount on the pore walls of the polymeric matrix. The composition of the organic matrix influenced the crystallization of calcium phosphates and the mechanical properties of the composite hydrogels. In vitro biological tests showed that mineralized hydrogels support the proliferation of MG-63 osteoblast-like cells to a greater extent compared to pristine hydrogels. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

As a result of ever-growing energy demands, motor vehicles are among the largest contributors to overall energy consumption. This has led researchers to focus on fuel consumption, which has important implications for the environment, the economy, and geopolitical stability. This article presents a comprehensive analysis of various fuel consumption modeling methods, with the aim of identifying parameters that significantly influence fuel consumption. The scientific novelty of this article lies in its use of low-cost technology, i.e., an OBD-II interface paired with a mobile phone, combined with modern mathematical modeling methods to create an accurate model of the fuel consumption of a vehicle. A vehicle test drive was performed, during which variations in selected parameters were recorded. Based on the obtained data, a model of the vehicle's fuel consumption was built using three forecasting methods: a multivariate regression model, decision trees, and neural networks. The results show that the multivariate regression model obtained the lowest MSE, MAR, and MRSE coefficients, indicating that this was the best forecasting method among those tested. Sufficient forecast error results were obtained using neural networks, with increases of approximately 73%, 10%, and 131% in MSE, MAE, and MRAE, respectively, compared to regression results. The worst results were obtained with the decision tree model, with increases of approximately 163%, 21%, and 92% in MSE, MAE, and MRAE compared to the regression results. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tuberous sclerosis complex is a rare multisystem genetic disorder characterized by multiorgan involvement, frequently associated with intellectual impairment and epilepsy. The aim of our study was to describe the neurological and dermatological manifestations of TSC in 32 adult patients (of whom 19 were females) who attended the Neurology and Nephrology Clinics of Fundeni Clinical Institute in Romania from 2015 to 2020. Seventeen patients were diagnosed with epilepsy, nine patients had intellectual impairment, and complete neuroimaging was available for twenty-two patients. As expected, the most frequent dermatological lesions were cutaneous angiofibromas in 20 patients, but with a lower frequency than described in the current literature. Statistical analysis was performed considering the small number of patients. Cortical tubers in neuroimaging seemed to be associated with the diagnosis of epilepsy, while subependymal nodules represented a risk factor for intellectual impairment. Males showed a larger number of dermatological types of lesions, especially café -au-lait patches. Interestingly, we found a statistically significant positive association between epilepsy and the presence of cutaneous angiofibromas, as well as total dermatological involvement. Females had significantly higher Charlson comorbidity index scores, indicating a higher burden of disease. Everolimus seemed to be a well-tolerated treatment and showed promising results in controlling epileptic seizures alone in two patients. The oil and gas sector is important to the global economy because it covers the exploration, production, processing, transportation, and distribution of oil and natural gas resources. Despite constant innovation and development of technologies to improve efficiency, reduce environmental impact, and optimize operations in the gas and oil industry over the last few decades, there is still room to increase the efficiency of the industry's equipment in order to reduce its carbon footprint. The separation of gas from oil is a critical stage in the technological production chain, and it is carried out using high-performance multi-phase separators to limit greenhouse gas emissions and have a low impact on the environment. In this study, an improved gas–oil separator configuration was established utilizing CFD techniques. Two separator geometry characteristics were studied. Both cases have the same number of subdomains, two porous media, and four fluid zones, but with a difference in the pitch of the cyclone from the inlet subdomain. The streamlines in a cross-plan of the separator and the distribution of the oil volume fraction from the intake to the outlet were two of the numerical results that were shown as numeric outcomes. The validation of these results was performed using an experimental testing campaign that had the purpose of determining the amount of lubricating oil that is discharged together with the compressed gas at the separator outlet. Due to the expansion of the use of powder bed fusion metal additive technologies in the medical field, especially for the realization of dental prostheses, in this paper, the authors propose a comparative experimental study of the mechanical characteristics and the state of their microscale surfaces. The comparison was made from material considerations starting from two dental alloys commonly used to realize dental prostheses: Ni-Cr and Co-Cr, but also technologies for obtaining selective laser melting (SLM) and conventional casting. In addition, to compare the performances with the classical casting technology, for the dental prostheses obtained through SLM, the post-processing stage in which they are in a preliminary finishing and polished state was considered. Therefore, for the determination of important mechanical characteristics and the comparative study of dental prostheses, the indentation test was used, after which the hardness, penetration depths (maximum, permanent, and contact depth), contact stiffness, and contact surface were established, and for the determination of the microtopography of the surfaces, atomic force microscopy (AFM) was used, obtaining the local areal roughness parameters at the miniaturized scale—surface average roughness, root-mean-square roughness (RMS), and peak-to-peak values. Following the research carried out, several interesting conclusions were drawn, and the superiority of the SLM technology over the classic casting method for the production of dental prostheses in terms of some mechanical properties was highlighted. At the same time, the degree of finishing of dental prostheses made by SLM has a significant impact on the mechanical characteristics and especially the local roughness parameters on a miniaturized scale, and if we consider the same degree of finishing, no major differences are observed in the roughness parameters of the surfaces of the prostheses produced by different technologies. In this review article, we embark on a thorough exploration of cannabinoids, compounds that have garnered considerable attention for their potential therapeutic applications. Initially, this article delves into the fundamental background of cannabinoids, emphasizing the role of endogenous cannabinoids in the human body and outlining their significance in studying neurodegenerative diseases and cancer. Building on this foundation, this article categorizes cannabinoids into three main types: phytocannabinoids (plant-derived cannabinoids), endocannabinoids (naturally occurring in the body), and synthetic cannabinoids (laboratory-produced cannabinoids). The intricate mechanisms through which these compounds interact with cannabinoid receptors and signaling pathways are elucidated. A comprehensive overview of cannabinoid pharmacology follows, highlighting their absorption, distribution, metabolism, and excretion, as well as their pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic properties. Special emphasis is placed on the role of cannabinoids in neurodegenerative diseases, showcasing their potential benefits in conditions such as Alzheimer's disease, Parkinson's disease, Huntington's disease, and multiple sclerosis.
