During the steelmaking process, a great amount of slag is generated as a by-product. Vanadium-bearing steelmaking slags are classified as hazardous and require special handling and storage due to the toxicity of vanadium pentoxides. At the same time, such slags are valuable sources for the recovery of vanadium. The present work reviews the investigations on vanadium recovery from CaO-SiO2-FeO-V2O5 thin film slags under the neutral and oxidizing conditions in the temperature range 1653 K to 1693 K (1380 °C to 1420 °C) using Single Hot Thermocouple Technique (SHTT). The slag samples were analyzed by SEM/EDX. The results indicated that vanadium pentoxide evaporation can be up to 17.73% under an oxidizing atmosphere, while spinel formation under an argon atmosphere was detected in the conditions of thin film slags. Metallic material concepts associated with the sustainable and efficient use of resources are currently the subject of intensive research. Al addition to steel offers advantages in view of lightweight, durability, and efficient use of high-Fe scrap from the Al industry. In the present work, Al was added to Fe-12Cr-(9,12)Ni-3Mn-0.3C-xAl (x = 0.1–6) (wt.%) stainless steels to assess its influence on microstructure and mechanical properties. According to density measurements based on Archimedes' principle, densities were between 7.70 and 7.08 g/cm3. High-energy X-ray diffraction estimations of the lattice parameter indicated that nearly 31% of density reduction was caused by the lattice expansion associated with Al addition. Depending on Al concentration, austenitic and duplex matrix microstructures were obtained at room temperature. In the presence of up to 3 wt.% Al, the microstructure remained austenitic. At the same time, strength and hardness were slightly enhanced. Al addition in higher quantities resulted in the formation of duplex matrix microstructures with enhanced yield strength but reduced ductility compared to the austenitic alloys. Due to the ready formation of B2-(Ni,Fe)Al intermetallics in the ferrite phase of the present alloy system, the increase in strength due to the presence of ferrite was more pronounced compared to standard duplex stainless steels. The occurrence of B2 intermetallics was implied by dilatometry measurements and confirmed by electron microscopy examinations and high-energy X-ray diffraction measurements. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In the previous research works, ZnAl2O4 material was considered as one of the solutions for the decopperization process of molten steels; up to 33% of decopperization efficiency was reported by utilising the ZnAl2O4 filter. In order to verify the decopperization possibility of ZnAl2O4 materials, iron-based alloys with various copper and carbon contents were interacted with ZnAl2O4 substrates in a heating microscope under an argon gas atmosphere at 1600 °C. Fe-Cu alloys were found to react with the ZnAl2O4 substrate during the interaction process, and a reaction layer with a complex composition around the alloy droplet was formed; however, Cu was not detected in the reaction layer. Cu was later found infiltrated inside of the ZnAl2O4 substrates. Furthermore, the Cu-Zn compounds were detected when the copper content in Fe-Cu alloys was 10 wt% Cu. After interaction experiments, copper was decreased in all cases. Thereby, the copper evaporation and infiltration into the ZnAl2O4 substrate were considered as the reasons for copper loss. In this study, the effect of interstitial contents on the mechanical properties and strain-induced martensite formation in an austenitic stainless steel was investigated. The mechanical properties of solution annealed Fe-15Cr-7Mn-4Ni-0.5Si-(0.01-0.2)N-(0.01-0.2)C concentrations in weight percent stainless steels were studied using room temperature tensile tests. All three alloys used in the present study have a sum content of C + N of about 0.2 wt.%. To verify the influence of C and N on deformation behavior, microstructural investigations are performed using light optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and magnetic and hardness measurements. Moreover, strain-induced α′-martensite nucleation was characterized by scanning electron microscope using EBSD. In the present alloy system, carbon provides a stronger austenite stabilizing effect than nitrogen. Hence, the smallest amount of strain-induced α′-martensite was formed in the steel alloyed with 0.2 wt.% C. It also exhibited the optimal mechanical properties, including the highest ultimate tensile strength (1114 MPa), uniform elongation (63%), and total elongation (68%). Moreover, the interstitial content influences the occurrence of dynamic strain aging (DSA), which was only observed in the steel alloyed with carbon. The paper presents new results concerning the influence of the gas density and porous plug diameter on the nature of liquid steel stirring with an inert gas in the ladle. The tests were carried out on a cold model of a 30t ladle using particle image velocimetry (PIV) with a high-speed camera to analyse the plume zone formed during the supply of argon and helium as a stirring gas. The similarity criteria for the investigation of stirring processes in cold model in the past were discussed and compared. The modified Morton number was used in this paper to relate the gas flow rate in the model with real objects. The presented results constitute complete documentation of the influence of the plug diameter and gas density on the size of formed gas bubbles and the velocity of gas bubbles rising in different zones of the plume, plume, and spout geometry, including the expansion angle, spout height, open eye area, and gas hold-up. Inert gas atomization is one of the main sources for production of metal powder for powder metallurgy and additive manufacturing. The obtained final powder size distribution is controlled by various technological parameters: gas flow rate and pressure, liquid metal flow rate, gas type, temperature of spraying, configuration of nozzles, etc. This work explores another dimension of the atomization process control: modifications of the liquid metal properties and their effect on the obtained powder size. Series of double-alloyed Cr-Mn-Ni steels with sulfur and phosphorus were atomized with argon at 1600 °C. The results indicate that surface tension and viscosity modifications lead to yielding finer powder fractions. The obtained correlation is compared with the individual modification of surface tension with S and Se and modification of viscosity with phosphorus. Discrepancy of the results is discussed. The viscosities of the industrial basic oxygen furnace (BOF) slag with varying compositions of MgO, Al2O3, TiO2, and MnO were continuously measured at a temperature range between 1400 and 1700 °C using the rotating bob method. Three characteristic temperatures for the melting behavior of the BOF slag were investigated using a high-temperature microscope. The solid fraction of the slag was calculated by FactSage 7.2 using the FTOxid database. General observations from the experimental data show that the increase in MgO tends to increase viscosity. However, Al2O3, TiO2, and MnO decrease viscosity up to a certain level, and beyond that, they also increase the viscosity. The measured values of the viscosity of BOF slags were compared and discussed with known data from the literature. Finally, the activation energy of BOF slags with different compositions of MgO, Al2O3, TiO2, and MnO was calculated in the temperature range of industrial operations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The article presents the mechanical properties of the austenitic stainless steel X5CrMnNiMoN16-4-4 after deformation by cold rolling and subsequent short-term tempering (deformation and partitioning (D&P) treatment). Tensile strengths of 1700–900 MPa and beyond were achieved both after work hardening and in the D&P-treated strip. The initial state of austenite in terms of grain size and pre-strengthening, as well as the selected cold rolling temperature significantly influenced the deformation-induced formation of α' martensite and thus the flow and hardening behavior of the steel. The usage of two different rolling temperature regimes showed that the strength properties in the cold strip can be specifically adjusted. Lower deformation-induced martensite fractions enabled a larger thickness reduction of the strip without increasing the rolling force, while high deformation-induced martensite fractions led to strong hardening at low deformation levels. The D&P-treatment permits the strength of the cold-rolled strip with a predominantly austenitic microstructure to be increased to the required level. The total elongation of such a D&P strip was well over 2%. The D&P treatment of the spring steel strip is a cost-effective alternative to conventional tempering treatment. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The generation of a nickel-reduced, stainless spring steel strip with a thickness of 0.2 mm, producible under industrial conditions, is the aim of a transfer project together with the Institute of Metal Forming/TU BAF and the Auerhammer Metallwerk GmbH within the DFG Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) 799. The spring steel strip should exhibit a tensile strength of ≥1700 MPa in work-hardened and partitioned state. The mechanical and corrosive properties of the steel strip should be equal or better than those given for 1.4310 steel (AISI 301). The article presents the results of laboratory alloys focused on the design of steel strips, which meet the requirements for a cost-effective production. The results presented relate to steel design, microstructure formation, temperature-dependent mechanical properties, and corrosion resistance. Four alloys of the type X5CrMnNiMoN16-x-4 with manganese contents of approximately 2 to 6 wt.-percent were investigated. The austenitic steel X5CrMnNiMoN16-4-4 with TRIP/TWIP effect was selected for deformation and partitioning treatments. Its deformation-induced α'-martensite formation significantly contributes to the work hardening of the steel. Tensile properties of the Fe–1.44C–8Mn–1.9Al (mass %) steel with a fully austenitic microstructure, obtained by rapid quenching from the austenite range, was determined at room temperature. Tensile tests were performed using specimens prepared in two different routes involving an exchanged sequence of machining and heat treatment as the last processing steps prior to tensile tests. In spite of the occurrence of deformation twinning, total tensile elongations in both processing routes remained below 18%. Abrupt stress drops during tensile tests suggested the occurrence of discontinuities in tensile specimens. Detailed examination of the fracture surface indicated a mixed intergranular–transgranular fracture mode. Furthermore, a high density of surface cracks was observed near the outer surface in the gauge section of fractured tensile specimens. The origin of surface cracks could not be identified. The coincidence of surface cracks with the grain boundaries, especially those nearly perpendicular to the tensile direction, is thought to be responsible for the accelerated grain boundary decohesion and the premature fracture of tensile specimens.
