This paper presents a W-band power amplifier monolithic microwave integrated circuit (MMIC) that is designed for high-precision millimeter-wave systems and fabricated using a 0.1 µm GaAs pHEMT process. The amplifier's stability was evaluated using the network determinant function, ensuring robust performance under both linear and nonlinear conditions. Simultaneous matching for gain and output power was achieved with minimal passive elements. The developed power amplifier MMIC exhibits a linear gain exceeding 20 dB and an input return loss greater than 6 dB across the 88–98 GHz range. It delivers an output power of 23.8–24.1 dBm with a power gain of 17.3–17.9 dB in the 88–97 GHz range and achieves a maximum power-added efficiency (PAE) of 24% at 94 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A staggered vane-shaped slot-line slow-wave structure (SV-SL SWS) for application in W-band traveling wave tubes (TWTs) is proposed in this article. In contrast to the conventional slot-line SWSs with dielectric substrates, the proposed SWS consists only of a thin metal sheet inscribed with periodic grooves and two half-metal enclosures, which means it can be easily manufactured and assembled and has the potential for mass production. This SWS not only solves the problem of the dielectric loading effect but also improves the heat dissipation capability of such structures. Meanwhile, the SWS design presented here covers a −15 dB S11 frequency range from 87.5 to 95 GHz. The 3-D simulation for a TWT based on the suggested SWS is also investigated. Under dual-electron injection conditions with a total voltage of 17.2 kV and a total current of 0.3 A, the maximum output power at 90 GHz is 200 W, with a 3 dB bandwidth up to 4 GHz. A wideband multi-polarized square-horn antenna based on an orthogonal mode transducer (OMT) is developed for working in the whole W-band in this paper. The designed antenna is capable of radiating multiple polarization modes as horizontal polarization (HP) and vertical polarization (VP) when as single-port excitation and left-handed circular polarization (LHCP) and right-handed circular polarization (RHCP) when as dual-port excitation, owing to the characteristic of the OMT with the transmitting of orthogonally polarized waves. A CNC-layered fabrication approach is proposed, which means that the antenna prototype integrating with a Boifot-type OMT, turning waveguide, twisting waveguide and phase shifter is divided into three layers along the vertical direction to be fabricated based on computerized numerical control (CNC) technology. In the design, the turning waveguide and twisting waveguide are employed to achieve plane consistency of the antenna branch ports. Furthermore, a phase shifter is designed to compensate the orthogonally polarized waves, which can keep the phase of the orthogonally polarized waves consistent in a wideband frequency range from 75 GHz to 110 GHz. A prototype is fabricated and measured to verify the performance of the proposed multi-polarization antenna, and the measured results agree well with the simulation ones. In the whole W-band, the value of return loss is better than 10 dB of all polarization modes, and the value of AR of the LHCP and RHCP is below 3.5 dB. The maximum gain of the antenna reaches up to 18.8 dBi at 110 GHz. In addition, regarding the layered structure, the possible layered assembly error analysis is discussed, which verifies the feasibility of the layered machining for this antenna. With increasing interest in the W-band, there is growing focus on parabolic reflector antennas that are known for efficiently inducing high-gain radiation characteristics. There is particular focus on parabolic antennas with diverse defocus-fed applications, including monopulse tracking, multi-beam formation using multiple feeds, and aperture-shared antennas for multi-band operation. Thus, a new simplified method is presented in this paper to analyze the radiation characteristics of defocus-fed parabolic antennas. The presented method is based on the discrete division of a parabolic reflector surface and considers only simplified wave propagation theory and the effect of the scalar function pattern from the feeder. Additionally, array theory is exclusively applied for the analysis of radiation characteristics. Therefore, the presented method uses a very simplified formula to calculate the radiation characteristics of a defocused parabolic reflector antenna. The performance of the presented method was evaluated by comparing the results with commercial EM tools. This article reports a two-stage differential structure power amplifier based on a 130 nm SiGe process operating at 77 GHz. By introducing a tunable capacitor for amplitude and phase balance at the center tap of the secondary coil of the traditional Marchand balun, the balun achieves amplitude imbalance less than 0.5 dB and phase imbalance less than 1 degree within the operating frequency range of 70–85 GHz, which enables the power amplifier to exhibit comparable output power over a wide operating frequency band. The power amplifier, based on a designed 3-bit digital analog convertor (DAC)-controlled base bias current source, exhibits small signal gain fluctuation of less than 5 dB and saturation output power fluctuation of less than 2 dB near the 80 GHz frequency point when the ambient temperature varies in the range of −40 °C to 125 °C. Benefiting from the aforementioned design, the tested single-path differential power amplifier exhibits a small signal gain exceeding 16 dB, a saturation output power exceeding 18 dBm, and a peak saturation output power of 19.1 dBm in the frequency band of 70–85 GHz. We propose a W-band circularly polarized reflectarray antenna in this article, which contains a single-layer reflectarray and a linearly polarized horn feed. To realize the proposed antenna, we designed a novel W-band multi-resonant element containing a Rogers RT5880 substrate with copper patches printed on its both surfaces. Then, a circular reflectarray with 12.25 λ0 (39.1 mm) aperture diameter was designed based on the proposed multi-resonant element, whose center frequency is 94 GHz. We further fabricated the proposed circular reflectarray and tested its performance. In the measured results, we can see that the obtained 1 dB gain bandwidth is 19.1% (91~109 GHz) and the obtained 2 dB gain bandwidth can reach as wide as 27.6% (89~115 GHz). Moreover, the 3 dB axial ratio bandwidth is 13.8% (89~102 GHz). The measured gain of our proposed reflectarray antenna at 94 GHz is 29.1 dBi and the corresponding aperture efficiency can reach as high as 52.0%. Radio telescopes are used by astronomers to observe the naturally occurring radio waves generated by planets, interstellar molecular clouds, galaxies, and other cosmic objects. These telescopes are equipped with radio receivers that cover a portion of the radio frequency (RF) and millimetre-wave spectra. The Sardinia Radio Telescope (SRT) is an Italian instrument designed to operate between 300 MHz and 116 GHz. Currently, the SRT maximum observational frequency is 26.5 GHz. A feasibility study and preliminary tests were performed with the goal of equipping the SRT with a W-band (84–116 GHz) mono-feed radio receiver, whose results are presented in this paper. In particular, we describe the adaptation to the SRT of an 84–116 GHz cryogenic receiver developed by the Institute de Radio Astronomie Millimétrique (IRAM) for the Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI) antennas. The receiver was upgraded by INAF with a new electronic control system for the remote control from the SRT control room, with a new local oscillator (LO), and with a new refrigeration system. Our feasibility study includes the design of new receiver optics. The single side band (SSB) receiver noise temperature measured in the laboratory, Trec ≈ 66 K at 86 GHz, is considered sufficiently low to carry out the characterisation of the SRT active surface and metrology system in the 3 mm band. Ground-based radar interferometry is capable of measuring target displacement to sub-mm accuracy. W-band ground-based radar has recently been investigated as a potential application for structural health monitoring. On the other hand, the application of W-band ground-based radar for natural slope monitoring is considered in this study due to its advantages in portability and recent cost-effective solutions. In radar interferometry, atmospheric phase screen (APS) is the most relevant phase disturbance that should be corrected for accurate displacement measurement. However, the APS effects in W-band radar interferometry have rarely been discussed. In this context, we study and evaluate the impacts of APS and its potential correction methods for 79 GHz ground-based radar interferometry using multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar. This paper presents an experimental investigation of a 79 GHz radar system using two types of field experiments conducted in an open flat field and a quarry site. In addition to the W-band radar system, a Ku-band (17 GHz) ground-based synthetic aperture radar (GB-SAR) system was jointly tested to compare different operating frequency bands. We have experimentally implemented a photonics-aided large-capacity fiber-mm-wave wireless communication system employing a simple dual-polarized single-input single-output (SISO) wireless based on polarization multiplexing at the W-band. To compare the performance of different algorithms, 18G-baud, and 35G-baud 16-level quadrature-amplitude-modulation (16QAM), probabilistically shaped 16QAM (PS-16QAM), 64QAM and PS-64QAM signal using different carrier phase recovery (CPR) algorithms are transmitted in the system. Moreover, we compare the Viterbi–Viterbi (VV), improved new algorithm based on VV (NVV), blind phase search (BPS), and two-stage BPS algorithms' computational complexity to better compare different algorithms. Using the experiment result, we can demonstrate that the BPS algorithm is about half a magnitude better than the NVV algorithm for PS-QAM signals, while the NVV algorithm has the lowest computational complexity. Additionally, we also achieve error-free wireless transmission at a net data rate of 324.1 Gb/s with the bit error ratio (BER) below the forward-error correction (FEC) threshold of 1 × 10−2 assuming soft-decision forward-error correction (SD-FEC) when using the BPS algorithm. A 94 GHz pulse Doppler solid-state millimeter-wave cloud radar (MMCR), Tianjian-II (TJ-II), has been developed. It reduces the size and cost using a solid-state power amplifier (SSPA) and a single antenna. This paper describes the system design, including hardware and signal processing components. Pulse compression, segmented pulse, and dual pulse repetition frequency (PRF) technologies are employed to overcome the limitations imposed by the low power of the SSPA and the high frequency of 94 GHz. The TJ-II also features a dual-polarization, high-gain antenna for linear depolarization ratio detection and a time-division receive channel to improve channel consistency and save on costs. To achieve high flexibility and low interference in signal transmission and reception, the TJ-II uses software-defined radio technology, including direct digital synthesis, digital downconversion, and bandpass sampling. In this study, a W-band GaN single-pole single-throw (SPST) switch was designed. To realize the pass and isolation modes of the SPST switch, we proposed the design technique of a unit branch consisting of one transistor and one transmission. The characteristic impedance and length of the transmission line were determined by the impedance and the angle at which the straight line connecting the impedances of the on and off states of the transistor meets the real axis of the Smith chart. Using the design technique, the matching networks for the pass and isolation modes of the switch are concurrently completed. In order to improve the insertion loss and isolation characteristics of the switch, the size of the transistor and the number of unit branches were investigated. To verify the feasibility of the proposed design technique, we designed the W-band SPST switch using a 100 nm GaN HEMT process. The measured insertion loss and isolation were below 2.9 dB and above 23.5 dB, respectively, in the frequency range from 91 GHz to 101 GHz. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A W-band, high-gain, hybrid slot antenna array based on bulk silicon MEMS technology is proposed in this paper. The high-order-mode cavity is explored to excite the 2 × 2-slot basic unit, so as to reach the low-profile requirement of the bulk silicon MEMS process. To avoid the fragile structure of the large-scale antenna arrays based on the bulk silicon MEMS process, the ridge gap waveguide is employed to build the feed network for a large-scale array. A vertical transition between a rectangular waveguide and a ridge gap waveguide is designed to support the low-loss and low-cost assembling method between the radiation units and the feed network. An 8 × 8-slot hybrid antenna array is simulated and fabricated. The measured results show a relative bandwidth (VSWR < 2) of 8.1% with the first side-lobe level less than −11 dB over the frequency band of 91–97 GHz. A maximum gain of 26.1 dBi with the radiation efficiency of 65.2% is achieved. In this paper, a novel wideband transition from a laminated waveguide (LWG) to an air-filled rectangular waveguide (RWG) is proposed for millimeter-wave integration solutions based on multilayer low-temperature co-fired ceramic (LTCC) technology. The integrated transition cavity is divided into several resonators by introducing five grounded via holes. Due to the magnetic wall existing in the symmetry plane, the equivalent circuit of the proposed transition can be simplified as a three-pole filter model to explain the working mechanism with wideband performance. A W-band integrated LWG-to-RWG transition is designed as an example using LTCC technology. Two back-to-back prototypes with different lengths are fabricated and measured. A measured 25.7% bandwidth from 76 GHz to 101 GHz can be achieved for return loss better than 14 dB. The average insertion loss of a single transition is about 0.5 dB. Remote sensing techniques in the microwave frequency range have been successfully used in the context of bird, bat and insect measurements. This article breaks new ground in the analysis of freely flying insects by using a continuous-wave (CW) radar system in W-band, i.e., higher mm-wave frequencies, by measuring and analyzing the micro-Doppler signature of their wing beat motion. In addition to numerical and experimental methods, the investigation also includes the development of a new signal processing method using a cepstrogram approach in order to automatically determine the wing beat frequency. In this study, mosquitoes (culex pipiens) and bees (apis mellifera) are considered as model insects throughout the measurement campaign. It was found that 50 independent micro-Doppler measurements of mosquitoes and bees can be clearly distinguished from each other. This paper investigates the fabrication accuracy of the W-band SU-8 photoresist micromachined 4th order waveguide bandpass filters (BPF). The designed filter based on cylindrical resonators is excited in TM010 mode. It is ideally suitable for the layered SU-8 micromachining process as the height of the resonator is much smaller than one wavelength, the electromagnetic fields remain unchanged in the thickness direction. The filter is composed of three silver-coated SU-8 layers based on a double-layer overlay process. Excellent manufacturing tolerances can be controlled within 4 μm in the thickness direction, around 10 μm in double-layer stacking accuracy, and an average of 1° in vertical angle deviation. Various challenges encountered in the SU-8 process are investigated while corresponding general solutions are proposed for machining high-precision devices. The measured results show a return loss of 12.4 dB and a minimum insertion loss of 0.8 dB, which are in agreement with the simulated one. A W-band slot array antenna based on a substrate integrated waveguide (SIW) for microwave power transmission (MPT) is proposed in this paper. By size optimization, the transition from the rectifier element to the antenna is limited to a small size. It realizes a compact arrangement of the radiating slots, which not only improves the aperture efficiency of the antenna but also makes it easy to integrate into a large-scale array. For antenna testing, a coplanar waveguide–SIW–rectangular waveguide transition structure is added at the end of the antenna, and an antenna with this transition structure is processed by PCB printing technology and measured. The measured reflection coefficient is less than −10 dB at 90–96 GHz, the aperture efficiency is greater than 60% at 93.5–94.5 GHz, the maximum gain is 13.2 dB at 93.5 GHz, and the aperture efficiency is 79%. A W-band integer-N phase-locked loop (PLL) for a frequency hopping frequency modulation continuous wave (FMCW) radar is implemented in 65-nm CMOS technology. The cross-coupled voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) was designed based on a systematic analysis of the VCO combined with its push-pull buffer to achieve high efficiency and high output power. To provide a frequency hopping functionality without any overhead in the implementation, the center frequency of the VCO is steeply controlled by the gate voltage of the buffer, which effectively modifies the susceptance of the VCO load. A stand-alone VCO with the proposed architecture is fabricated, and it achieves an output power of 13.5 dBm, a peak power efficiency of 9.6%, and a tuning range of 3.5%. The phase noise performance of the VCO is −92.6 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz and −106.1 dBc/Hz at 10 MHz offset. Consisting of a third-order loop filter and a divider chain with a total modulus of 48, the locking range of the implemented PLL with the cross-coupled VCO is recorded from 78.84 GHz to 84 GHz, and its phase noise is −85.2 dBc/Hz at 1-MHz offset. We present a W-band 8-way wideband power amplifier (PA) for a high precision frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) radar in 65-nm CMOS technology. To achieve a broadband operation with an improved output power for a high range resolution and high distance coverage of FMCW radar sensors, a balanced architecture is employed with the Lange coupler which naturally combines the output powers from two 4-way push-pull PAs. By utilizing a transformer-based push-pull structure with a cross-coupled capacitive neutralization technique, the gate-drain capacitance of the 4-way PA is compensated for the stabilization with an improved power gain. Interstage matching was performed with transformers for a reduced loss from the matching network and minimal area occupation. The implemented balanced 8-way PA achieved a saturated output power (Psat) of 16.5 dBm, a 1-dB compressed output power (OP1dB) of 13.3 dBm, a power-added efficiency (PAE) of 9.9% at 90 GHz and 3-dB power bandwidth was 20.4 GHz (79.2–99.6 GHz). A design of a modular antenna/detector array for the electron cyclotron emission (ECE) imaging system at the Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) is proposed. The modular antenna/detector array is based on a unit antenna/detector module, which consists of an elliptical mini-lens, a dual-dipole antenna, an antenna balun, a low-noise amplifier, and a metal frame. The proposed modular antenna/detector array resolves the problem in the conventional antenna/detector array where one faulty channel requires the entire array to be removed for the service. With the proposed modular array, each channel module can be easily and independently removed and replaced without interference to the rest of the array, thus minimizing the interrupted service time for maintenance. Moreover, the unit channel modules can be efficiently updated under a variety of the tokamak operation conditions. The antenna/detector modules are optimized to have improved performance, and are tested in a W-band test setup, and consistently provide the gain increase by 10~20 dB as compared with the conventional antenna/detector array. A set of the proposed modular antenna/detector array is currently installed and tested in the KSTAR ECE imaging system, and will consistently produce the improved ECE imaging to monitor MHD instability activities under various plasma operation conditions. In this paper, a high-power amplifier integrated circuit (IC) in gallium-nitride (GaN) on silicon (Si) technology is presented at a W-band (75–110 GHz). In order to mitigate the losses caused by relatively high loss tangent of Si substrate compared to silicon carbide (SiC), low-impedance microstrip lines (20–30 Ω) are adopted in the impedance matching networks. They allow for the impedance transformation between 50 Ω and very low impedances of the wide-gate transistors used for high power generation. Each stage is matched to produce enough power to drive the next stage. A Lange coupler is employed to combine two three-stage common source amplifiers, providing high output power and good input/output return loss. The designed power amplifier IC was fabricated in the commercially available 60 nm GaN-on-Si high electron mobility transistor (HEMT) foundry. From on-wafer probe measurements, it exhibits the output power higher than 26.5 dBm and power added efficiency (PAE) higher than 8.5% from 88 to 93 GHz with a large-signal gain > 10.5 dB. Peak output power is measured to be 28.9 dBm with a PAE of 13.3% and a gain of 9.9 dB at 90 GHz, which corresponds to the power density of 1.94 W/mm. To the best of the authors' knowledge, this result belongs to the highest output power and power density among the reported power amplifier ICs in GaN-on-Si HEMT technologies operating at the W-band. This paper presents a reflection-type phase shifter (RTPS) at W-band in a 0.13 µm complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) process. The RTPS is composed of a 90° hybrid coupler and two identical reflection loads. Lumped-distributed element transmission line is introduced in the 90° hybrid coupler to reduce the chip size. Series inductor-capacitor (LC) resonators are used as the reflective loads and parallel inductors are deployed to reduce insertion loss variation. By cascading two-stage RTPS, 90° phase shifting range and 10.5 dB insertion loss with 1 dB variations from 80 GHz to 90 GHz are achieved. An impressive 0.1 dB variation is obtained at 86 GHz. The development of novel high-gradient accelerating structures operating at THz frequencies is critical for future free-electron lasers and TeV scale linear colliders. To reach high energies with reasonable length requires high accelerating gradients of ~100 MV/m. The main limitation to reaching these high-energy gradients is the vacuum RF breakdown phenomenon, which disrupts normal accelerator operations. For stable operations and to understand the breakdown microscopic dynamics, a new device capable of detecting the breakdown occurrences is required. In this paper, we provide the design of a pulse length monitor based on an analog to digital converter for fast signal digitization without the need to use high-speed digitizers to be used in a commercial mm-wave heterodyne spectrometer. W-Band radiometers using intermediate frequency down-conversion (super-heterodyne) and direct detection are compared. Both receivers consist of two W-band low noise amplifiers and an 80-to-101 GHz filter, which conforms to the reception frequency band, in the front-end module. The back-end module of the first receiver comprises a subharmonic mixer, intermediate frequency (IF) amplification and a square-law detector. For direct detection, a W-Band detector replaces the mixer and the intermediate frequency detection stages. The performance of the whole receivers has been simulated requiring special techniques, based on data from the experimental characterization of each subsystem. In the super-heterodyne implementation a local oscillator at 27.1 GHz (with 8 dBm) with a x3 frequency multiplier is used, exhibiting an overall conversion gain around 48 dB, a noise figure around 4 dB, and an effective bandwidth over 10 GHz. In the direct detection scheme, slightly better noise performance is obtained, with a wider bandwidth, around 20 GHz, since there is no IF bandwidth limitation (~15 GHz), and even using the same 80-to-101 GHz filter, the detector can operate through the whole W-band. Moreover, W-band detector has higher sensitivity than the IF detector, increasing slightly the gain. In both cases, the receiver performance is characterized when a broadband noise input signal is applied. The radiometer characteristics have been obtained working as a total power radiometer and as a Dicke radiometer when an optical chopper is used to modulate the incoming signal. Combining this particular super-heterodyne or direct detection topologies and total power or Dicke modes of operation, four different cases are compared and discussed, achieving similar sensitivities, but better performances in terms of equivalent bandwidth and noise for the direct detection radiometer. It should be noted that this conclusion comes from a particular set of components, which we could consider as typical, but we cannot exclude other conclusions for different components, particularly for different mixers and detectors. Interferometric radars are widely used for static and dynamic monitoring of large structures such as bridges, culverts, wind turbine towers, chimneys, masonry towers, stay cables, buildings, and monuments. Most of these radars operate in Ku-band (17 GHz). Nevertheless, a higher operative frequency could allow the design of smaller, lighter, and faster equipment. In this paper, a fast MIMO-GBSAR (Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Ground-Based Synthetic Aperture Radar) operating in W-band (77 GHz) has been proposed. The radar can complete a scan in less than 8 s. Furthermore, as its overall dimension is smaller than 230 mm, it can be easily fixed to the head of a camera tripod, which makes its deployment in the field very easy, even by a single operator. The gyrotron travelling wave tube (gyro-TWT) is an ideal high-power, broadband vacuum electron amplifier in millimeter and sub-millimeter wave bands. It can be applied as the source of the imaging radar to improve the resolution and operating range. To satisfy the requirements of the W-band high-resolution imaging radar, the design and the experimentation of the W-band broadband TE02 mode gyro-TWT were carried out. In this paper, the designs of the key components of the vacuum tube are introduced, including the interaction area, electron optical system, and transmission system. The experimental results show that when the duty ratio is 1%, the output power is above 60 kW with a bandwidth of 8 GHz, and the saturated gain is above 32 dB. In addition, parasitic mode oscillations were observed in the experiment, which limited the increase in duty ratio and caused the measured gains to be much lower than the simulation results. In order to develop wide-band low-loss windows for W-band vacuum electronic devices and easily fabricate them, symmetric and asymmetric pillbox windows are investigated and reported in this paper. A symmetric pillbox window and an asymmetric pillow-box window were designed, simulation optimized, fabricated, and tested. The initial parameters for the two pillbox windows were designed by equivalent circuit theory. Computer simulation technology (CST) three-dimensional (3D) electromagnetic simulation software was used to verify and optimize the design. Because of the uncontrollability of welding during the experiment, this article provides two solutions. One is to measure and reprocess the symmetrical pillbox window with the dielectric sheet welded to reduce the influence of welding on the measurement results; the other is an asymmetrical box window which is designed to avoid the error caused by the welding of the box window. The best experimental results for the symmetric pillbox window were |S21| close to 1 dB and reflection parameter |S11| close to 10 dB in the frequency range of 77–110 GHz. The experimental results for the asymmetric pillbox window were |S21| < 1 dB nearly in the frequency range of 76–109.5 GHz. The experimental results show that both solutions efficiently complete the design of broadband pillbox windows and would potentially be operated in the gigahertz millimeter-wave region.
