Injuries and subclinical effects from exposure to blasts are of significant concern in military operational settings, including tactical training, and are associated with self-reported concussion-like symptomology and physiological changes such as increased intestinal permeability (IP), which was investigated in this study. Time-series gene expression and IP biomarker data were generated from "breachers" exposed to controlled, low-level explosive blast during training. Samples from 30 male participants at pre-, post-, and follow-up blast exposure the next day were assayed via RNA-seq and ELISA. A battery of symptom data was also collected at each of these time points that acutely showed elevated symptom reporting related to headache, concentration, dizziness, and taking longer to think, dissipating ~16 h following blast exposure. Evidence for bacterial translocation into circulation following blast exposure was detected by significant stepwise increase in microbial diversity (measured via alpha-diversity p = 0.049). Alterations in levels of IP protein biomarkers (i.e., Zonulin, LBP, Claudin-3, I-FABP) assessed in a subset of these participants (n = 23) further evidenced blast exposure associates with IP. The observed symptom profile was consistent with mild traumatic brain injury and was further associated with changes in bacterial translocation and intestinal permeability, suggesting that IP may be linked to a decrease in cognitive functioning. This study designed integrated constructed wetland–microbial fuel cell (CW–MFC) systems using activated carbon (AC) as both CW substrates and MFC anodes and investigated the structure-activity relationship of six kinds of commercial columnar AC, as well as the organics and nitrogen removal, microbial activity and diversity of CW–MFCs. Results showed that the nitrogen adsorption by AC tended to be a linear process in which physical adsorption played a leading role and micropores made great contributions. A higher specific surface area, developed mesopores, and oxygen functionalities were conducive to the capacitance properties of AC, while a higher specific surface area and developed micropores were conducive to reduce material resistance and improve ion permeability. Coconut-shell-based AC had both excellent nitrogen adsorption capacity and electrochemical properties, making it ideal as both CW substrates and MFC anodes for CW–MFCs. The electricity generation, coulombic efficiency, internal resistance, and organics and nitrogen removal of CW–MFCs were positively correlated with the total depth of AC anodes. The total depth of AC anodes can be determined based on the influent organics/nitrogen loadings and organics/nitrogen removal load of AC, and a relatively smaller depth of a single AC anode (5 cm) was recommended. The MFC effectively improved the enzymatic activity (by 10.33% dehydrogenase, 8.72% catalase, and 7.35% ammonia monooxygenase), nitrification/denitrification intensity (by 9.53%/6.68%), and microbial diversity (by 1.64–4.07%) of AC (MFC anodes) in CW–MFCs, while the depth of a single AC anode barely influenced the microbial activity and diversity. MFCs increased COD and NH3-N removal in CW–MFCs by 11.60% and 3.4%, respectively. The increased total adsorption capacity of AC with the increase of its total depth narrowed the difference in COD removal resulting from the promotion of MFCs on organics degradation. MFCs increased TN removal in CW–MFCs by 5.29% through promoting denitrification in cathodes and enhancing NH3-N assimilation in anodes. The phyla of EAB (Proteobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, and Acidobacteria) and genera of EAB (Citrobacter, Geobacter, and Pseudomonas) accounted for 85–86% and 15.58–16.64% of the microbial community on AC anodes in CW–MFCs, respectively. We introduced a label-free sensing system based on an array of microring resonators (MRRs) which was successfully employed for human serum albumin (HSA) detection. The sensing-ring surface was functionalized to immobilize anti-HSA, facilitating HSA binding. Our refractive index sensing system demonstrates high sensitivity at 168 nm/RIU and a low limit of detection (LOD) of 63.54 ng/mL, closely comparable to current HSA detection methods. These findings confirm the potential of MRRs as biocompatible sensors for HSA detection. The spatial pattern of Weizi settlements features distinct regional characteristics. Moreover, it contains profound wisdom in terms of traditional construction; therefore, studies on its association with the microclimate have important implications for improving the quality of human settlements. In the present study, Guanweizi Village in the Xinyang City of Henan Province was used as an example to analyze and evaluate the thermal comfort of green spaces. The impact of peripheral water bodies on the thermal comfort of outdoor green spaces in the settlement was studied, and the association between the components of outdoor green spaces and physiological equivalent temperature as an indicator of thermal comfort was explored. Further, factors negatively affecting the thermal comfort of green spaces were analyzed through the grid method. Thermal comfort in the Weizi settlement is somewhat correlated with the coverage of water bodies, roads, soil, greening, and buildings. Increasing the water area and creating multi-level greening spaces are effective measures to improve the thermal comfort of green spaces in the settlement. For the marine industry, resistance reduction can reduce energy consumption and achieve protection of the marine environment. The use of air lubrication to reduce the resistance of ships is one of the most important ways. With this technology, high-speed air cavity crafts show immense potential as they can be utilized in various marine activities, such as emergency rescue, supply, and maritime security. Through experiments, this study presents an in-depth analysis of the effects of bubble chamber pressure and initial stern inclination on the resistance of high-speed air cavity crafts at different speeds. The results show that air pressure has a significant impact on resistance. It was found that as the speed of the ship increased, the resistance reduction effect became more prominent under the same pressure conditions. Moreover, the resistance tended to stabilize when the pressure reached a certain value. In addition to the air pressure, the longitudinal inclination does have an effect on resistance reduction. To achieve better resistance reduction, the initial stern inclination angle should be chosen appropriately. Furthermore, adjusting the angle with speed changes can optimize the resistance reduction effect. This experimental study provides critical support for conducting further research on high-speed air cavity crafts. Thioredoxin (TRX) is a small molecule protein that participates in the redox process and plays a decisive role in various functions of plants. However, the role of TRX in Medicago sativa (alfalfa), a widely cultivated perennial herb of legume, is still poorly understood. Here, we isolated MsTRX from alfalfa and determined the characteristics in improving salt tolerance by assaying the phenotype and physiological changes and the expression of stress-response genes in transgenic tobacco. The expression of MsTRX was similar in alfalfa roots, leaves, and inflorescences, and was downregulated in response to cold, drought, and salt treatment. The overexpression of MsTRX in tobacco promoted the accumulation of soluble sugar (SS) and proline; enhanced the activity of peroxidase (POD); and induced the upregulation of beta-amylase 1 (BAM1), lipid-transfer protein 1 (LTP1), candidate signal molecules/sensor relay proteins (CBSX3), superoxide dismutase [Cu-Zn] (Cu/Zn-SOD), superoxide dismutase [Mn] (Mn-SOD), protein gamma response 1 (GR1), dehydrin DHN1-like (ERD10B), and serine/threonine-protein kinase (SnRK2), as well as the downregulation of phyB activation-tagged suppressor1 (BAS1) and serine/threonine-protein kinase that phosphorylates LHCII protein 7 (STN7) under salt stress. These results indicated that MsTRX improves salt tolerance via maintaining osmotic homeostasis, scavenging reactive oxygen species (ROS), and regulating the transcription of stress-response genes in plants. In our study, we provided a new understanding of how MsTRX improves salt stress in plants and how MsTRX can be included in future breeding programs to improve salt tolerance in alfalfa. The placental tissue serves as an exchanger between the mother and the fetus during pregnancy in mammals. Proper placental angiogenesis is central to the health of both the mother and the growth and development of the fetus. Maternal obesity is associated with impaired placental function, resulting in restricted placental blood vessel development and fetal developmental disorders. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a ubiquitous second messenger in cells that has many biological effects such as promoting angiogenesis, anti-inflammation, anti-oxidation and promoting lipid metabolism. However, in the case of maternal obesity, whether H2S can be used as an important signaling molecule to regulate body metabolism, alleviate placental inflammation levels and promote placental angiogenesis is still unclear. In this study, diallyl trisulfide (DATS), which is a well-known H2S donor, was derived from garlic and used to treat obese pregnant mice induced by a high-fat diet, to determine its effects on lipid metabolism and inflammation, as well as placental morphology and placental angiogenesis. Here, we show that DATS treatment increased litter size and alive litter size. DATS improved the H2S level in the serum and placenta of the mice. In addition, DATS treatment improved insulin resistance and lipid metabolism, reduced the inflammatory response and alleviated placental vascular dysplasia caused by obesity in obese mice. In summary, our research revealed that H2S is an important signaling molecule in vivo, which can regulate placental angiogenesis and improve the reproductive performance in maternal obesity. To address trade-off and membrane-fouling challenges during the development of nanofiltration membranes, a thin-film composite membrane was prepared on the basis of interfacial polymerization regulated by adjusting the capsaicin-derived self-polymer poly N-(2-hydroxy-5-(methylthio) benzyl) acrylamide (PHMTBA) on the polysulfone substrate in this study. Through the self-polymerization of the monomer HMTBA with varied contents, microwave-assisted technology was employed to develop a variety of PHMTBAs. It was discovered that PHMTBA is involved in the interfacial polymerization process. Piperazine and PHMTBA competed for the reaction with trimesoyl chloride, resulting in a flatter and looser membrane surface. The PHMTBA-modified membrane presented a typical double-layer structure: a thicker support layer and a thinner active layer. The addition of PHMTBA to membranes improved their hydrophilicity and negative charge density. As a result, the PHMTBA-modified membrane showed dependable separation performance (water flux of 159.5 L m−2 h−1 and rejection of 99.02% for Na2SO4) as well as enhanced anti-fouling properties (flux recovery ratio of more than 100% with bovine serum albumin-fouling and antibacterial efficiency of 93.7% against Escherichia coli). The performance of the prepared membranes was superior to that of most other modified TFC NF membranes previously reported in the literature. Phosphate cement-based materials are fast-hardening cement materials, which have been applied to the rapid repair of concrete structures. However, the excessive setting rate could lead to initial cracks in the cement-based matrix. Therefore, a proper retarder is required to reduce the setting rate, thus improving the strength of structures. In this study, a magnesium chloride retarder was selected, and its influence on the setting time, slump flow, and the mechanical strengths (flexural strength, compressive strength, and bond strength) of phosphate cement paste curing for 3 h~28 d was investigated. Scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, and thermal analysis were used to analyze the mechanism of the properties of phosphate cement paste. Results showed that the setting time increased exponentially with the mass ratio of magnesium chloride by the total mass of magnesium oxide. Meanwhile, the slump flow increased linearly with the increasing dosage of magnesium chloride, and the drying shrinkage rate exhibited a quadratic function with the curing age. The addition of magnesium chloride decreased the mechanical strengths of phosphate cement paste at earlier curing age (lower than 3 d) and effectively improved the mechanical strengths at a later curing age (equal to or higher than 3 d). Moreover, magnesium chloride could also decrease the drying shrinkage rate. It can be obtained from the microcosmic researching results that magnesium chloride can inhibit the hydration of phosphate cement and reduce cracks induced by drying shrinkage at later curing age (higher than 3 d). Voltage-dependent anion channels (VDACs) are highly conserved proteins that are involved in the translocation of tRNA and play a key role in modulating plant senescence and multiple pathways. However, the functions of VDACs in plants are still poorly understood. Here, a novel VDAC gene was isolated and identified from alfalfa (Medicago sativa L.). MsVDAC localized to the mitochondria, and its expression was highest in alfalfa roots and was induced in response to cold, drought and salt treatment. Overexpression of MsVDAC in tobacco significantly increased MDA, GSH, soluble sugars, soluble protein and proline contents under cold and drought stress. However, the activities of SOD and POD decreased in transgenic tobacco under cold stress, while the O2- content increased. Stress-responsive genes including LTP1, ERD10B and Hxk3 were upregulated in the transgenic plants under cold and drought stress. However, GAPC, CBL1, BI-1, Cu/ZnSOD and MnSOD were upregulated only in the transgenic tobacco plants under cold stress, and GAPC, CBL1, and BI-1 were downregulated under drought stress. These results suggest that MsVDAC provides cold tolerance by regulating ROS scavenging, osmotic homeostasis and stress-responsive gene expression in plants, but the improved drought tolerance via MsVDAC may be mainly due to osmotic homeostasis and stress-responsive genes. In this study, relationships between low-level jet (LLJ) and low visibility associated with precipitation, air pollution, and fog in Tianjin are investigated based on observational data from January to December, 2016. Statistical results show 55% of precipitation is accompanied by LLJ, and two causes responsible for the relatively high percentage are presented. The result of case analysis shows that some southwesterly LLJs are favorable for the formation of precipitation by transporting water vapor when the water vapor channel from the South China Sea or Bengal Bay to Bohai Rim region is established. Statistical results show 55% of pollution episodes (PEs) are accompanied by LLJs. When pollutions are observed in the southern industrial regions, nocturnal southwesterly LLJ, which can carry polluted air masses from polluted regions to Tianjin and induce turbulent mixing, can enhance surface PM2.5 concentration and is favorable for the formation of surface pollution at night. Nocturnal northerly or southeasterly LLJ leads to clear air masses mixing with polluted air masses and is favorable for increasing visibility. Contributions of southwesterly LLJs to the formation of fog and precipitation are similar, which both rely on establishing the water vapor channel despite occurrence heights of LLJs being different. In this study, magnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles coated with polydopamine possessing abundant amino groups (Fe3O4@PDA) were conveniently prepared, detailed, and characterized, and then firstly used as a supporting matrix for immobilizing Thermomyces lanuginosus lipase (Fe3O4@PDA@TLL). The effects of some crucial factors on the immobilization efficiency were investigated and the optimal protein loading and activity recovery were found to be 156.4 mg/g and 90.9%, respectively. Characterization studies revealed that Fe3O4@PDA@TLL displayed a broader pH and temperature adaptability as compared to the free TLL, which allows its use at wider ranges of reaction conditions. With regard to the stabilities, the immobilized TLL clearly displayed improved pH, thermal, and solvent tolerance stabilities compared to the free enzyme, suggesting that the biocompatible Fe3O4@PDA might be an outstanding material for immobilizing TLL and acting as alternative support for different enzymes. From November 2016 to January 2017, there were large-scale dense fog processes in Tianjin area on the west coast of Bohai Bay, China, even strong dense fog with visibility less than 50 m occurred. Based on the observation data of fog droplet spectrum monitor, visibility sensor, environmental particle monitoring equipment and meteorological automatic station, the characteristics of fog droplet size distribution and the interaction between the fog droplets and fine particles during dense fog events were analyzed. The results show following characteristics: (1) The average concentration of fog droplets (Na), the average liquid water content (La) and the maximum liquid water content (Lmax) in the strong dense fog process are larger than those in the dense fog. The average spectrum of fog droplet size distribution conforms to Junge distribution, and they are all broad-spectrum fog with a spectrum width of about 45 μm. The average spectrum is similar to the dense fog of heavily industrialized inland in the world. (2) The maximum of fog droplet diameter during the formation stage have a good indication for the outbreak of strong dense fog. (3) The mass concentration of PM2.5 (CPM2.5) is ranged from 121–375 μg/m3, and the interaction between fog droplets and fine particles is analyzed. During the formation, development and maturity stages, fog process can scavenge atmospheric fine particles, and the scavenging efficiency of PM2.5 is more remarkable than PM10. When CPM2.5 does not exceed 350 μg/m3, the increase in the concentration of fine particles is conducive to the rapid growth of fog droplets and the sharp drop of visibility. However, when CPM2.5 exceeds the critical value, the increase has a negative feedback effect on the development of the fog process. More investigations and cases are necessary to fully assess the mechanisms related to the dense fog events in Tianjin area and further analysis will be done. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this study we produced transgenic tobacco plants by overexpressing a serine proteinase inhibitor gene, SaPIN2a, from the American black nightshade Solanum americanum under the control of the CaMV 35S promoter using Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated transformation. SaPIN2a was properly transcribed and translated as indicated by Northern blot and Western blot analyses. Functional integrity of SaPIN2a in transgenic plants was confirmed by proteinase inhibitory activity assay. Bioassays for insect resistance showed that SaPIN2a-overexpressing transgenic tobacco plants were more resistant to cotton bollworm (Helicoverpa armigera) and tobacco cutworm (Spodoptera litura) larvae, two devastating pests of important crop plants, than the control plants. Interestingly, overexpression of SaPIN2a in transgenic tobacco plants resulted in a significant increase in glandular trichome density and a promotion of trichome branching, which could also provide an additional resistance mechanism in transgenic plants against insect pests. Therefore, SaPIN2a could be used as an alternative proteinase inhibitor for the production of insect-resistant transgenic plants.
