The seismic response detection and operational safety assessment of high-speed railway (HSR) bridges play a crucial role in ensuring HSR systems' operational safety and reliability. Smartphones have introduced intelligent inspection tools for structural health detection, becoming a new tool for intelligent structural inspection. Combining the public and smartphones is the key to public participation in structural health detection. This study utilizes smartphone-based structural seismic response inspection technology to investigate the framework of public participation in earthquake response inspection and assessment. This system comprises the Smart Bridge Brain (SBB), which integrates data from multiple sources and systems, an assigning mechanism for public participation inspection tasks, and smartphone-based HSR bridge structural seismic response inspection technology. At the same time, the Unreal Engine 5.0 software is used to create a mixed-reality virtual simulation experimental environment to validate the feasibility of this framework. The results indicate that the intelligent optimization of task allocation by the SBB successfully assigns detection tasks to each public participant. Public participants can promptly reach predefined damage structure detection targets and rapidly inspect bridge structural seismic response indicators using smartphones. In addition, this paper also conducts a comprehensive evaluation and analysis of the detection of the work efficiency index (WEI) within the system. Furthermore, optimization strategies for the efficient execution of detection tasks are proposed based on WEI variations influenced by different factors. Crack disease is one of the most serious and common diseases in road detection. Traditional manual methods for measuring crack detection can no longer meet the needs of road crack detection. In previous work, the authors proposed a crack detection method for asphalt pavements based on an improved YOLOv5s model, which is a better model for detecting various types of cracks in asphalt pavements. However, most of the current research on automatic pavement crack detection is still focused on crack identification and location stages, which contributes little to practical engineering applications. Based on the shortcomings of the above work, and in order to improve its contribution to practical engineering applications, this paper proposes a method for segmenting and analyzing asphalt pavement cracks and identifying parameters based on image processing. The first step is to extract the crack profile through image grayscale, histogram equalization, segmented linear transformation, median filtering, Sauvola binarization, and the connected domain threshold method. Then, the magnification between the pixel area and the actual area of the calibration object is calculated. The second step is to extract the skeleton from the crack profile images of asphalt pavement using the Zhang–Suen thinning algorithm, followed by removing the burrs of the crack skeleton image using the connected domain threshold method. The final step is to calculate physical parameters, such as the actual area, width, segments, and length of the crack with images obtained from the crack profile and skeleton. The results show that (1) the method of local thresholding and connected domain thresholding can completely filter noise regions under the premise of retaining detailed crack region information. (2) The Zhang–Suen iterative refinement algorithm is faster in extracting the crack skeleton of asphalt pavement, retaining the foreground features of the image better, while the connected-domain thresholding method is able to eliminate the missed isolated noise. (3) In comparison to the manual calibration method, the crack parameter calculation method proposed in this paper can better complete the calculation of crack length, width, and area within an allowable margin of error. On the basis of this research, a windowing system for asphalt pavement crack detection, WSPCD1.0, was developed. The joint roughness coefficient JRC of rock joints is an important parameter for measuring the geometric morphology of rock joints. However, the parameter obtained from traditional calculation methods has certain limitations in reflecting the differences in shear strength of rock joints in different shear directions with the same orientation. Firstly, native joint surface test blocks were cast using three-dimensional reverse reconstruction technology. Subsequently, direct shear tests were conducted under different normal stress and shear direction conditions, followed by numerical simulations using the finite difference software Flac3d. The JRC coefficient calculation method proposed by Yuan was modified and extended by considering the percentage of climbing sections and the effective contact area during the ramping process. This study indicates that the numerical simulation results are in good agreement with the shear test results. The introduction of the shear climbing rate SCR and the curvature coefficient of profile CCP is used to reflect the geometric differences of the joint surfaces in different shear directions. These two parameters are nonlinearly fitted with the experimental results, leading to a calculation formula that characterizes the shear strength characteristics of the joint surfaces in different shear directions. Fluorescence imaging (FI) in the second near-infrared (NIR-II) window has emerged as a promising imaging method for cancer diagnosis because of its superior properties such as deep penetration depth and high signal-to-background ratio. Despite the superiorities of organic conjugated nanomaterials for NIR-II FI, the issues of low fluorescence quantum yield, weak metabolic capability, undefined molecular structure for conjugated polymers, weak light-harvesting ability, short emission wavelength, and high synthetic complexity for conjugated small molecules still remain to be concerned. We herein propose an oligomerization strategy by facilely adjusting the oligomerization time to balance the advantages and disadvantages between conjugated polymers and small molecules, obtaining the candidate (CO1, oligomerization time: 1 min) with the optimal NIR-II optical performance. Then the CO1 is further prepared into water-dispersed nanoparticles (CON1) via a nanoprecipitation approach. By virtue of the suitable size, excellent NIR-II optical properties, low toxicity, and strong cell-labeling ability, the CON1 is successfully employed for in vivo NIR-II imaging, permitting the real-time visualization of blood vascular system and tumors with high sensitivity and resolution. This work thus not only provides a personalized organic conjugated nano-agent for NIR-II FI, but also highlights the molecular strategy for the development of organic conjugated systems with optimal performance for bio-imaging. The effects of different cooking methods (steaming, boiling, air frying, and oven baking) and cooking times (0, 5, 10, 15, and 20 min) on the bioactive components (total phenol, total flavonoid, crude polysaccharides, and eritadenine), color, texture, microstructure, and volatiles in shiitake mushrooms were investigated in this study. Steaming, boiling, and air frying for 5–20 min could decrease the contents of all the four bioactive components in the shiitake mushroom. However, oven baking for 5 min and 10 min showed the highest contents of total phenolics and total flavonoids, respectively. Moreover, the lowest losses of crude polysaccharides and eritadenine were observed for oven baking for 5 min and 15 min, respectively. The lightness of shiitake mushrooms was decreased by all treatments; however, steaming could keep a higher brightness compared with other methods. The microstructure was damaged by all cooking methods, especially air frying for 20 min. Meanwhile, steaming for 20 min decreased the hardness mostly, and there was no significant difference with air frying for 20 min. All cooking treatments decreased the complexity of the flavors and the relative contents of volatile compounds; the lowest contents were found when boiling for 5 min. From these results it can be seen that the physical, histological, and chemical features in shiitake mushroom were influenced by cooking methods and times. Opencast coal mine production and construction activities have a certain impact on the ecological environment, while the development and utilization of large coal bases distributed in semi-arid steppe regions may have a more direct and significant impact on the eco-environment. Therefore, in-depth studies of the ecological impacts of human activities and natural environmental elements in opencast coal mines in typical semi-arid steppe regions and analyses of their driving forces are of great significance for protecting and restoring regional fragile steppe ecosystems. In this paper, the mining area southwest of the Shengli coalfield, a typical ore concentration area in eastern Inner Mongolia, was selected as the research object. Its remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) was calculated using the Google Earth Engine (GEE) platform to analyze the eco-environmental quality in the mining area and its surrounding 2 km from 2005 to 2021. The geographically weighted artificial neural network model (GWANN) was combined with the actual situation of mining activity and ecological restoration to discuss the driving factors of eco-environmental quality change in the study area. The results showed that: (1) the proportion of the study area with excellent and good eco-environmental quality increased from 20.96% to 23.93% from 2005 to 2021, and the proportions of areas with other quality grades fluctuated strongly. (2) The change in eco-environmental quality in the interior of the mining area was closely related to the reclamation of dump sites and migration of the mining area. (3) The maximum contribution rate of the mining activity factor to the external eco-environmental quality of the mining area reached 43.33%, with an annual average contribution rate of 34.48%; as the distance from the mining area increased, its contribution gradually decreased. This quantitative analysis of the driving forces of RSEI change in the mining area will complement future work in ecological evaluations of mining areas while also improving the practicality of ecological evaluation at the mining scale, thereby further helping the ecological management of mining areas. The development of drug-resistance in the opportunistic pathogen Escherichia coli has become a global public health concern. Due to the share of similar flora between pets and their owners, the detection of pet-origin antibiotic-resistant E. coli is necessary. This study aimed to detect the prevalence of feline-origin ESBL E. coli in China and to explore the resistance elimination effect of garlic oil to cefquinome on ESBL E. coli. Cat fecal samples were collected from animal hospitals. The E. coli isolates were separated and purified by indicator media and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). ESBL genes were detected by PCR and Sanger sequencing. The MICs were determined. The synergistic effect of garlic oil and cefquinome against ESBL E. coli was investigated by checkerboard assays, time-kill and growth curves, drug-resistance curves, PI and NPN staining, and a scanning electronic microscope. A total of 80 E. coli strains were isolated from 101 fecal samples. The rate of ESBL E. coli was 52.5% (42/80). The prevailing ESBL genotypes in China were CTX-M-1, CTX-M-14, and TEM-116. In ESBL E. coli, garlic oil increased the susceptibility to cefquinome with FICIs from 0.2 to 0.7 and enhanced the killing effect of cefquinome with membrane destruction. Resistance to cefquinome decreased with treatment of garlic oil after 15 generations. Our study indicates that ESBL E. coli has been detected in cats kept as pets. The sensitivity of ESBL E. coli to cefquinome was enhanced by garlic oil, indicating that garlic oil may be a potential antibiotic enhancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper aims to investigate wave dispersion behavior in the quasi-solid state of concrete to better understand microstructure hydration interactions. The quasi-solid state refers to the consistency of the mixture between the initial liquid–solid stage and the hardened stage, where the concrete has not yet fully solidified but still exhibits viscous behavior. The study seeks to enable a more accurate evaluation of the optimal time for the quasi-liquid product of concrete using both contact and noncontact sensors, as current set time measurement approaches based on group velocity may not provide a comprehensive understanding of the hydration phenomenon. To achieve this goal, the wave dispersion behavior of P-wave and surface wave with transducers and sensors is studied. The dispersion behavior with different concrete mixtures and the phase velocity comparison of dispersion behavior are investigated. The analytical solutions are used to validate the measured data. The laboratory test specimen with w/c = 0.5 was subjected to an impulse in a frequency range of 40 kHz to 150 kHz. The results demonstrate that the P-wave results exhibit well-fitted waveform trends with analytical solutions, showing a maximum phase velocity when the impulse frequency is at 50 kHz. The surface wave phase velocity shows distinct patterns at different scanning times, which is attributed to the effect of the microstructure on the wave dispersion behavior. This investigation delivers profound knowledge of hydration and quality control in the quasi-solid state of concrete with wave dispersion behavior, providing a new approach for determining the optimal time of the quasi-liquid product. This paper discusses the challenges in characterizing electromagnetic (EM) waves propagating through inhomogeneous media, such as reinforced cement concrete and hot mix asphalt. Understanding the EM properties of materials, including their dielectric constant, conductivity, and magnetic permeability, is crucial to analyzing the behavior of these waves. The focus of this study is to develop a numerical model for EM antennas using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method, and to gain a deeper understanding of various EM wave phenomena. Additionally, we verify the accuracy of our model by comparing its results with experimental data. We analyze several antenna models with different materials, including the absorber, high-density polyethylene and perfect electrical conductors, to obtain an analytical signal response that is verified against the experimental response. Furthermore, we model the inhomogeneous mixture of randomly distributed aggregates and voids within a medium. Replication and erasure codes are always used for storing large amounts of data in distributed storage systems. Erasure code technology can maximize the storage space of distributed storage systems as well as guaranteeing their availability and reliability, but it will decrease the performance of the system when encoding and decoding. Since cold data do not require high real-time data availability, we focus on the cold data using erasure codes. We propose a new erasure code process named NewLib code based on the Liberation code, which designs the data alignment after stripping the encoding data. The NewLib code improves the performance of reading and writing in the distributed storage systems. At the same time, we developed a node scheduling scheme called N-Schedule, which divides the data nodes into multiple virtual nodes according to the storage space and computing power. The virtual nodes are dispersed into a hash ring by a consistent hash to construct a fully symmetric and decentralized hash ring in order to achieve uniform data distribution and task scheduling. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have received extensive attention due to their various harmful effects. In this study, the adsorptive removal of 10 legacy and emerging PFASs by four anion-exchange resins (including gel and macroreticular resins) were systematically investigated. Our results showed that the capacities of resins absorbing PFASs were ranked in the following order: gel strong base HPR4700 (297~300 μg/g) ≈ macroreticular strong base S6368 (294~300 μg/g) ≈ macroreticular weak base A111S (289~300 μg/g) > gel weak base WA10 (233~297 μg/g). Adsorption kinetic results indicated that the adsorption process might involve chemical and Henry regime adsorption or reaction control. Intraparticle diffusion was probably the major removal step. Co-existing fulvic acid (0.5, 1, 5 mg/L) and inorganic anions (5 mg/L of sulfate, carbonate, bicarbonate) would hinder the PFAS removal by resins with WA10 showing the highest inhibition rate of 17% and 71%, respectively. The adsorption capacities of PFBA decreased from 233 μg/g to 194 μg/g, and from 233 μg/g to 67 μg/g in the presence of fulvic acid and inorganic anions, respectively. PFASs were more easily removed by HPR4700, S6368, and A111S under neutral and alkaline environment. Moreover, WA10 was not able to remove PFASs under an alkaline medium. Oxide metallurgy technology can improve the microstructure of a coarse-grained heat-affected zone (CGHAZ) but introduces extra inclusions. Local corrosion behavior of the CGHAZ of a Zr–Ti–Al–RE deoxidized steel was investigated in this work using theoretical calculations and experimental verification. The modified inclusions have a (Zr–Mg–Al–Ca–RE)Ox core claded by a CaS and TiN shell. CaS dissolves first, followed by the oxide core, leaving TiN parts. This confirms that the addition of rare earth can reduce lattice distortion and prevent a galvanic couple between the inclusions and the matrix, while the chemical dissolution of CaS causes localized acidification, resulting in the pitting corrosion initiation. The classification of architectural style for Chinese traditional settlements (CTSs) has become a crucial task for developing and preserving settlements. Traditionally, the classification of CTSs primarily relies on manual work, which is inefficient and time consuming. Inspired by the tremendous success of deep learning (DL), some recent studies attempted to apply DL networks such as convolution neural networks (CNNs) to achieve automated classification of the architecture styles. However, these studies suffer overfitting problems of the CNNs, leading to inferior classification performance. Moreover, most of the studies apply the CNNs as a black box providing limited interpretability. To address these limitations, a new DL classification framework is proposed in this study to overcome the overfitting problem by transfer learning and learning-based data augmentation technique (i.e., AutoAugment). Furthermore, we also employ class activation map (CAM) visualization technique to help understand how the CNN classifiers work to abstract patterns from the input. Specifically, due to a lack of architectural style datasets for the CTSs, a new annotated dataset is first established with six representative classes. Second, several representative CNNs are leveraged to benchmark the new dataset. Third, to address the overfitting problem of the CNNs, a new DL framework is proposed which combines transfer learning and AutoAugment to improve the classification performance. Extensive experiments are conducted on the new dataset to demonstrate the effectiveness of our framework. The proposed framework achieves much better performance than baselines, greatly mitigating the overfitting problem. Highlights: What are the main findings? The effect of filling phosphogypsum on the axial compression behavior of CFS walls. What is the implication of the main finding? Filling phosphogypsum can effectively improve the axial compression behavior of CFS walls. The bearing capacity of the wall filled with phosphogypsum in and between the studs was significantly increased. The components affecting the bearing capacity of the wall are steel tubes, phosphogypsum, and wall sheathings. To study the effect of filling phosphogypsum (PG) on the axial compression behavior of cold-formed thin-walled steel (CFS) walls, four full-scale test specimens were designed and fabricated, in consideration of the filling regions of PG as well as measures with or without wall sheathings. The fabricated specimens were tested under monotonic vertical loads, and the failure processes and failure modes of specimens were elaborated. Each specimen's axial load-displacement curve, bearing capacity, strain curve, and energy dissipation capacity were investigated in detail. Furthermore, the internal force distributions of wall components and failure mechanisms were revealed. The test results indicated that the failure characteristics of specimens include the buckling of the steel tubes, cracking of wall sheathings, crushing of PG, and distorting of tracks. Compared with the cavity wall specimen, the axial bearing capacity of the specimen filled with PG in the studs only increased by 37.4%, and the bearing capacity of the specimen filled with PG in and between the studs increased by 115.7%. This indicates that filling PG can effectively improve the axial bearing capacity of CFS walls. The bearing capacity of the specimen without wall sheathings is lower than that of the specimen with wall sheathings, indicating that the wall sheathing has a beneficial effect on the bearing capacity of the specimen. In addition, the internal forces of components during the loading process were analyzed. It found that the steel tube and PG made a great contribution to the bearing capacity of the wall. The cycle of biogenic elements in lakes is intimately linked with particulate organic matter (POM), which plays a critical role in ecosystem restoration and the control of eutrophication. However, little is known regarding the functionality of ecosystem degradation on the source of POM in the water of a karst lake. To fill this knowledge gap, herein we compared the temporal and spatial distribution characteristics of POM prior to and after ecosystem degradation in the karst lake Caohai Lake, located in the southwest of China, and analyzed the source of POM using a combination of carbon and nitrogen stable isotopes (δ13C–δ15N). Our results showed that the dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration and pH values decreased, and the concentrations of POM in water increased by 11% and 31% in the wet and dry seasons, respectively. The decrease in the δ13C value of POM was accompanied by the increase in the δ15N value of POM in the water of Caohai lake. Prior to the ecosystem's degradation, sediment resuspension (28%) and submerged macrophytes (33%) were the dominant sources of POM in lake water. In contrast, sediment resuspension (51%) was the major source of POM after the ecosystem's degradation. Environmental factors, including DO, turbidity, water depth, and water temperature, that are related to photosynthesis and sediment resuspension are the main factors controlling the spatiotemporal distribution of POM. The resuspension of sediment reduced the transparency of the water, limiting effective photosynthesis, impeding the survival of submerged macrophytes, and, consequently, deteriorating the ecosystem. We propose that the control of sediment resuspension is important for improving the water transparency that creates an appropriate habitat for the restoration of the submerged macrophyte community. Simple Summary: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) has a notoriously bad prognosis due to its high mortality and lack of good therapies. Chemotherapy is the current standard of treatment for PDAC, yet survival for most PDAC remain at around one year. Better therapeutic options are in dire need. Unlike other cancer types where targeted therapies and immunotherapies have changed the treatment landscape, their uses in pancreatic cancer are limited. However, there is increasing evidence in preclinical and early clinical studies that suggest these agents hold the key to the next frontier in PDAC treatment. We herein review some selected evidence. Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is an aggressive cancer with abysmal prognosis. It is currently the third most common cause of cancer-related mortality, despite being the 11th most common cancer. Chemotherapy is standard of care in all stages of pancreatic cancer, yet survival, particularly in the advanced stages, often remains under one year. We are turning to immunotherapies and targeted therapies in PDAC in order to directly attack the core features that make PDAC notoriously resistant to chemotherapy. While the initial studies of these agents in PDAC have generally been disappointing, we find optimism in recent preclinical and early clinical research. We find that despite the immunosuppressive effects of the PDAC tumor microenvironment, new strategies, such as combining immune checkpoint inhibitors with vaccine therapy or chemokine receptor antagonists, help elicit strong immune responses. We also expand on principles of DNA homologous recombination repair and highlight opportunities to use agents, such as PARP inhibitors, that exploit deficiencies in DNA repair pathways. Lastly, we describe advances in direct targeting of driver mutations and metabolic pathways and highlight some technological achievements such as novel KRAS inhibitors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Simple Summary: Biliary tract cancers (BTCs) are a rare but deadly group of gastrointestinal tumors that are often diagnosed in the advanced stages of disease. Despite large studies investigating optimal systemic therapy options in BTCs, current chemotherapies provide only modest benefits in overall survival. The rapidly evolving study of homologous recombination repair (HRR) as part of the broader DNA damage repair (DDR) system makes it possible to exploit deficiencies in this pathway with targeted agents such as PARP inhibitors (PARPi). We will review the rationale for PARPi use, as well as considerations for further unlocking their potential in treating BTC. Biliary tract cancers (BTCs) are a heterogeneous group of malignancies that make up ~7% of all gastrointestinal tumors. It is notably aggressive and difficult to treat; in fact, >70% of patients with BTC are diagnosed at an advanced, unresectable stage and are not amenable to curative therapy. For these patients, chemotherapy has been the mainstay treatment, providing an inadequate overall survival of less than one year. Despite the boom in targeted therapies over the past decade, only a few targeted agents have been approved in BTCs (i.e., IDH1 and FGFR inhibitors), perhaps in part due to its relatively low incidence. This review will explore current data on PARP inhibitors (PARPi) used in homologous recombination deficiency (HRD), particularly with respect to BTCs. Greater than 28% of BTC cases harbor mutations in genes involved in homologous recombination repair (HRR). We will summarize the mechanisms for PARPi and its role in synthetic lethality and describe select genes in the HRR pathway contributing to HRD. We will provide our rationale for expanding patient eligibility for PARPi use based on literature and anecdotal evidence pertaining to mutations in HRR genes, such as RAD51C, and the potential use of reliable surrogate markers of HRD. In this study, singular integral solutions were studied to investigate scattering of Rayleigh waves by subsurface cracks. Defining a wave scattering model by objects, such as cracks, still can be quite a challenge. The model's analytical solution uses five different numerical integration methods: (1) the Gauss–Legendre quadrature, (2) the Gauss–Chebyshev quadrature, (3) the Gauss–Jacobi quadrature, (4) the Gauss–Hermite quadrature and (5) the Gauss–Laguerre quadrature. The study also provides an efficient dynamic finite element analysis to demonstrate the viability of the wave scattering model with an optimized model configuration for wave separation. The obtained analytical solutions are verified with displacement variation curves from the computational simulation by defining the correlation of the results. A novel, verified model, is proposed to provide variations in the backward and forward scattered surface wave displacements calculated by different frequencies and geometrical crack parameters. The analytical model can be solved by the Gauss–Legendre quadrature method, which shows the significantly correlated displacement variation with the FE simulation result. Slope deformation monitoring is the prerequisite for disaster risk assessment and engineering control. Terrestrial laser scanning (TLS) is highly applicable to this field. Coarse registration method of point cloud based on scale-invariant feature transform (SIFT) feature points and fine registration method based on the k-dimensional tree (K-D tree) improved iterative closest point (ICP) algorithm were proposed. The results show that they were superior to other algorithms (such as speeded-up robust features (SURF) feature points, Harris feature points, and Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) improved ICP algorithm) when taking the Stanford Bunny as an example, and had high applicability in coarse and fine registration. In order to integrate the advantages of point measurement and surface measurement, an improved point cloud comparison method was proposed and the optimal model parameters were determined through model tests. A case study was conducted on the left side of the K146 + 150 point at S236 Boshan section, Shandong Province, and research results show that from 14 August 2018 and 9 November 2019, the overall deformation of the slope was small with a maximum value of 0.183 m, and the slope will continue to maintain a stable state without special inducing factors such as earthquake, heavy rainfall and artificial excavation. Developments in applications such as rocket nozzles, miniature nuclear reactors and solar thermal generation pose high-density heat dissipation challenges. In these applications, a large amount heat must be removed in a limited space under high temperature. In order to handle this kind of cooling problem, this paper proposes liquid metal-based microchannel heat sinks. Using a numerical method, the flow and heat transfer performances of liquid metal-based heat sinks with different working fluid types, diverse microchannel cross-section shapes and various inlet velocities were studied. By solving the 3-D steady and conjugate heat transfer model, we found that among all the investigated cases, lithium and circle were the most appropriate choices for the working fluid and microchannel cross-section shape, respectively. Moreover, inlet velocity had a great influence on the flow and heat transfer performances. From 1 m/s to 9 m/s, the pressure drop increased as much as 65 times, and the heat transfer coefficient was enhanced by about 74.35%. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Injectable hydrogels, which are formed in situ by changing the external stimuli, have the unique characteristics of easy handling and minimal invasiveness, thus providing the advantage of bypass surgical operation and improving patient compliance. Using external temperature stimuli to realize the sol-to-gel transition when preparing injectable hydrogel is essential since the temperature is stable in vivo and controllable during ex vivo, although the hydrogels obtained possibly have low mechanical strength and stability. In this work, we designed an in situ fast-forming injectable cellulose/albumin-based hydrogel (HPC-g-AA/BSA hydrogels) that responded to body temperature and which was a well-stabilized hydrogen-bonding network, effectively solving the problem of poor mechanical properties. The application of localized delivery of chemotherapeutic drugs of HPC-g-AA/BSA hydrogels was evaluated. Tick-borne spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsioses were neglected in Taiwan. The study reported a seroepidemiological survey of SFG rickettsiae in residents in Gongliao District, Northeast Taiwan. Blood samples were examined for antibodies against SFG rickettsiae by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay and immunofluorescence assay. Risk factors were assessed using logistic regression. Ticks parasitizing dogs were collected within a 2 km radius from the houses of seropositive participants, and PCR was performed to detect possible tick-borne pathogens. Of 1108 participants, 75 (6.8%) had antibodies against SFG rickettsiae. Residents were more likely to be seropositive if they were older than 65 years, recruited by Dr. Enjoy's Clinic, or resided in Jilin village. A total of 184 ticks including 5 species (Rhipicephalus sanguineus, Rhipicephalus haemaphysaloides, Dermacentor auratus, Haemaphysalis hystricis, Haemaphysalis ornithophila) were collected. Rickettsia spp. were detected in 6.5% (12/184) of ticks. Rickettsia sp. TwKM01 was found in 6 R. sanguineus and 4 R. haemaphysaloides; while Rickettsia sp. TwKM03 was identified in 1 R. sanguineus. Moreover, gene-based pairwise analysis indicated identification of a putative new species, Rickettsia sp. Da-1, in D. auratus. These findings provided evidence of SFG rickettsiae infection in ticks and suggested SFG rickettsiae exposure in the residents. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The incident directions of seismic waves can change the ground motions of slope topography. To elaborate on the influences of the directions of seismic waves, a dynamic analysis of the slope topography was performed. Seismic waves were input using an equivalent nodal force method combined with a viscous-spring artificial boundary. The amplification of ground motions in double-faced slope topographies was discussed by varying the angles of incidence. Meanwhile, the components of seismic waves (P waves and SV waves), slope materials and slope geometries were all investigated with various incident earthquake waves. The results indicated that the pattern of the amplification of SV waves was stronger than that of P waves in the slope topography, especially in the greater incident angels of the incident waves. Soft materials intensely aggravate the acceleration amplification, and more scattered waves are produced under oblique incident earthquake waves. The variations in the acceleration amplification ratios on the slope crest were much more complicated at oblique incident waves, and the ground motions were underestimated by considering only the vertical incident waves. In this paper, the influences of Cr3C2/VC content on WC grain size, WC grain shape and mechanical properties of WC–6 wt. % Co cemented carbides were investigated. The results showed that the grain size first rapidly decreased and then slightly decreased with the increasing Cr3C2/VC content, and VC led to finer grain size and narrower size distribution. HRTEM/EDS analysis of the WC/Co interface indicates that the segregation concentration of V is much larger than that of Cr, which may be a strong response to the higher inhibition efficiency of VC. The addition of Cr3C2 induced triangular prism shape WC grains while VC generated stepped triangular prism grains. Despite the grain growth inhibitor (GGI) mechanisms of Cr3C2/VC have been extensively studied in the literature, the doping amount, especially the doping limit, has not been systematically investigated. In this work, the saturated solubilities of Cr and V in cobalt binder phase along with carbon content hare been predicted based on thermodynamic calculations. Based on the theoretical calculations, the doping amount of Cr3C2/VC is designed to be gradually increasing until more or less over their maximum solubilities in the binder phase, thereby investigating the subsequent microstructure and mechanical properties. When the doping of Cr3C2/VC exceeds the maximum solubility in Co phase, Co-rich Cr-carbides and Co-deficient V-carbides would form respectively, which were detrimental to the transverse rupture strength (TRS) and impact toughness. The hardness increased with the increasing Cr3C2/VC content, while the fracture toughness decreased with the increasing Cr3C2/VC content. The TRS initially enhanced and then declined, but the stepped triangular prism shape grains and low fraction of WC/Co interface in WC–6Co–VC cemented carbide led to a more pronounced decline in the TRS. The sample with 0.6 wt. % Cr3C2 addition had good comprehensive mechanical properties, its hardness, fracture toughness and TRS were 1880 kg/mm2, 9.32 MPa·m1/2 and 3450 MPa, respectively. This study presents a developed ultrasonic water level detection (UWLD) system with an energy-efficient design and dual-target monitoring. The water level monitoring system with a non-contact sensor is one of the suitable methods since it is not directly exposed to water. In addition, a web-based monitoring system using a cloud computing platform is a well-known technique to provide real-time water level monitoring. However, the long-term stable operation of remotely communicating units is an issue for real-time water level monitoring. Therefore, this paper proposes a UWLD unit using a low-power consumption design for renewable energy harvesting (e.g., solar) by controlling the unit with dual microcontrollers (MCUs) to improve the energy efficiency of the system. In addition, dual targeting to the pavement and streamside is uniquely designed to monitor both the urban inundation and stream overflow. The real-time water level monitoring data obtained from the proposed UWLD system is analyzed with water level changing rate (WLCR) and water level index. Avian salmonellosis caused by Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) and Pullorum (S. Pullorum) remains a big threat to the poultry industry and public hygiene. AvrA is an effector involved in inhibiting inflammation. Compared to AvrA from S. Enteritidis (SE-AvrA), the AvrA from S. Pullorum (SP-AvrA) lacks ten amino acids at the C-terminal. In this study, we compared the anti-inflammatory response induced by SP-AvrA to that of SE-AvrA. Transient expression of SP-AvrA in epithelial cells resulted in significantly weaker inhibition of NF-κB pathway activation when treated with TNF-α compared to the inhibition by SE-AvrA. SP-AvrA expression in the S. Enteritidis resulted in weaker suppression of NF-κB pathway in infected HeLa cells compared to SE-AvrA expression in the cells, while SP-AvrA expressed in S. Pullorum C79-13 suppressed NF-κB activation in infected HeLa and Caco 2 BBE cells to a greater extent than did SE-AvrA because of the higher expression of SP-AvrA than SE-AvrA in S. Pullorum. Further analysis demonstrated that the inhibition of NF-κB pathway in Salmonella-infected cells corresponded to the downregulation of the p-JNK and Beclin-1 protein molecules. In this study, the effects of Cr3C2, VC, and TaC on microstructure, WC grain morphology and mechanical properties of WC–10 wt. % Co ultrafine cemented carbides were investigated. The experimental results showed that WC grains size decreased and size distribution became narrow by adding Cr3C2, VC, and TaC. The inhibition efficiency was in the order of VC > Cr3C2 > TaC. Cr3C2 addition would induce triangular prism grains and Co phase was strengthened by Cr3C2, resulting in the enhancement of transverse rupture strength (TRS) and impact toughness. WC morphologies in cemented carbides with VC addition were triangular prisms with multi-steps in basal and prismatic planes due to anisotropic growth. The multi-steps in basal and prismatic planes led to low TRS and fracture toughness. The inhibition mechanism of TaC is to reduce the surface energy of WC and slow down the solution/re-precipitation rate at the WC/Co interfaces by adsorbing on the surface of WC grains. The sample with 0.8 wt. % Cr3C2 had excellent comprehensive mechanical properties. Its Vickers hardness, fracture toughness, TRS and impact toughness were 1620 kg/mm2, 9.94 MPa·m1/2, 3960 MPa and 50.4 J/m2, respectively. This study presents a comparative assessment of image enhancement and segmentation techniques to automatically identify the flash flooding from the low-resolution images taken by traffic-monitoring cameras. Due to inaccurate equipment in severe weather conditions (e.g., raindrops or light refraction on camera lenses), low-resolution images are subject to noises that degrade the quality of information. De-noising procedures are carried out for the enhancement of images by removing different types of noises. For the comparative assessment of de-noising techniques, the Bayes shrink and three conventional methods are compared. After the de-noising, image segmentation is implemented to detect the inundation from the images automatically. For the comparative assessment of image segmentation techniques, k-means segmentation, Otsu segmentation, and Bayesian segmentation are compared. In addition, the detection of the inundation using the image segmentation with and without de-noising techniques are compared. The results indicate that among de-noising methods, the Bayes shrink with the thresholding discrete wavelet transform shows the most reliable result. For the image segmentation, the Bayesian segmentation is superior to the others. The results demonstrate that the proposed image enhancement and segmentation methods can be effectively used to identify the inundation from low-resolution images taken in severe weather conditions. By using the principle of the image processing presented in this paper, we can estimate the inundation from images and assess flooding risks in the vicinity of local flooding locations. Such information will allow traffic engineers to take preventive or proactive actions to improve the safety of drivers and protect and preserve the transportation infrastructure. This new observation with improved accuracy will enhance our understanding of dynamic urban flooding by filling an information gap in the locations where conventional observations have limitations. Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is a host-ranged pathogen that can infect both animals and humans. Poultry and poultry products are the main carriers of S. Enteritidis, which can be transmitted to humans through the food chain. To eradicate the prevalence of S. Enteritidis in poultry farms, it is necessary to develop novel vaccines against the pathogen. In this study, we constructed two vaccine candidates, CZ14-1∆spiC∆nmpC and CZ14-1∆spiC∆rfaL, and evaluated their protective efficacy. Both mutant strains were much less virulent than the parental strain, as determined by the 50% lethal dose (LD50) for three-day-old specific-pathogen free (SPF) White Leghorns and Hyline White chickens. Immunization with the mutant candidates induced highly specific humoral immune responses and expression of cytokines IFN-γ, IL-1β, and IL-6. In addition, the mutant strains were found to be persistent for almost three weeks post-infection. The survival percentages of chickens immunized with CZ14-1∆spiC∆nmpC and CZ14-1∆spiC∆rfaL reached 80% and 75%, respectively, after challenge with the parental strain. Regulating the microstructure of powder metallurgy (P/M) nickel-based superalloys to achieve superior mechanical properties through heat treatment is a prevalent method in turbine disk design. However, in the case of dual-performance turbine disks, the complexity and non-uniformity of the heat treatment process present substantial challenges. The prediction of yield strength is typically derived from the analysis of microstructures under various heat treatment regimes. This method is time-consuming, expensive, and the accuracy often depends on the precision of microstructural characterization. This study successfully employed a coupled method of Artificial Neural Network (ANN) and finite element analysis (FEA) to reveal the relationship between the heat treatment process and yield strength. The coupled method accurately predicted the location specified and temperature-dependent yield strength based on the heat treatment parameters such as holding temperatures and cooling rates. The root mean square error (RMSE) and mean absolute percentage deviation (MAPD) for the training set are 50.37 and 3.77, respectively, while, for the testing set, they are 50.13 and 3.71, respectively. Furthermore, an integrated model of FEA and ANN is established using a Abaqus user subroutine. The integrated model can predict the yield strength based on temperature calculation results and automatically update material properties of the FEA model during the loading process simulation. This allows for an accurate calculation of the stress-strain state of the turbine disk during actual working conditions, aiding in locating areas of stress concentration, plastic deformation, and other critical regions, and provides a novel reliable reference for the rapid design of the turbine disk.
