Polyaniline (PANI) nanospheres, nanofibers, and nanoplates were prepared using the oxidative polymerization method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) was used to observe the three morphologies of PANI, and their structure was tested using infrared spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The influence of particle morphology on the electrorheological (ER) effect was studied through rheological experiments and molecular dynamics (MD) simulation. The experimental and simulation results indicate that without applying an electric field, the nanofibers easily form a three-dimensional network structure in the suspension, resulting in yield stress. The three-dimensional network structure of the nanoplate suspension becomes weaker and the PANI nanosphere suspension lacks the ability to form a three-dimensional network structure. After applying an electric field, under the same condition, the yield stress and electric field-induced shear stress increment of PANI nanofibers are the highest, followed by nanoplates, and those of PANI nanospheres are the lowest. This indicates that the ER effect increases with the increase in particle morphology anisotropy. Through three-dimensional visual simulation analysis, it can be concluded that the enhanced ER effect associated with increased particle anisotropy can be attributed to improved stability in the ER chain structure. Electrorheological (ER) polishing is a novel polishing technology having flexible and tunable characteristics. At present, ER polishing uses ER particles to drive abrasive particles to polish the material surface. Under the action of high-speed centrifugation, the abrasive particles are easily separated from ER particles due to their significantly different ER effect, and this can easily cause the degradation of polishing ability. In this work, alumina-doped titanium dioxide ER polishing particles were developed via a sol-gel method. As a classical abrasive, alumina has higher hardness and can improve the ER effect of titanium dioxide by doping. Thus, alumina-doped titanium dioxide particles simultaneously possess high ER effect and high hardness. No phase separation appears in the polishing process and the result shows that alumina-doped titanium dioxide has a good polishing efficiency for materials with Mohs hardness of 3 and below. Microalgal lipids are essential for biofuel and dietary supplement production. Lipid engineering for higher production has been studied for years. However, due to the complexity of lipid metabolism, single-gene engineering gradually encounters bottlenecks. Multiple gene regulation is more beneficial to boosting lipid accumulation and further clarifying the complex regulatory mechanism of lipid biosynthesis in the homeostasis of lipids, carbohydrates, and protein metabolism. Here, three lipid-related genes, DOF, LACS2, and CIS, were co-regulated in Chlamydomonas reinhartii by two circles of transformation to overexpress DOF and knock down LACS2 and CIS simultaneously. With the multiple regulations of these genes, the intracellular lipids and FA content increased by 142% and 52%, respectively, compared with CC849, whereas the starch and protein contents decreased by 45% and 24%. Transcriptomic analysis showed that genes in TAG and FA biosynthesis were up-regulated, and genes in starch and protein metabolism were down-regulated. This revealed that more carbon precursor fluxes from starch and protein metabolism were redirected towards lipid synthesis pathways. These results showed that regulating genes in various metabolisms contributed to carbon flux redirection and significantly improved intracellular lipids, demonstrating the potential of multiple gene regulation strategies and providing possible candidates for lipid overproduction in microalgae. Urchin-like microparticles/nanoparticles assembled from radial nanorods have a good appearance and high specific surface area, providing more exposed active sites and shortening the diffusion path of photoexcited carriers from the interior to the surface. The interfacial interaction and physical and chemical properties of the materials can be improved by the interfacial porous network induced by interlacing nano-branches. In addition, multiple reflections of the layered microstructure can absorb more incident light and improve the photocatalytic performance. Therefore, the synthesis and functionalization of three-dimensional urchin-like nanostructures with controllable size, shape, and hierarchy have attracted extensive attention. This review aims to provide an overview to summarize the structures, mechanism, and application of urchin-like microparticles/nanoparticles derived from diverse synthesis methods and decoration types. Firstly, the synthesis methods of solid urchin-like micro-/nanoparticles are listed, with emphasis on the hydrothermal/solvothermal method and the reaction mechanism of several typical examples. Subsequently, the preparation method of composite urchin-like micro-/nanoparticles is described from the perspective of coating and doping. Then, the research progress of urchin-like hollow microspheres is reviewed from the perspective of the step-by-step method and synchronous method, and the formation mechanism of forming urchin-like hollow microspheres is discussed. Finally, the application progress of sea urchin-like particles in the fields of photocatalysis, electrochemistry, electromagnetic wave absorption, electrorheological, and gas sensors is summarized. Vertically oriented graphene (VG), owing to its sharp edges, non-stacking morphology, and high surface-to-volume ratio structure, is promising as a consummate material for the application of photoelectric detection. However, owing to high defect and fast photocarrier recombination, VG-absorption-based detectors inherently suffer from poor responsivity, severely limiting their viability for light detection. Herein, we report a high-performance photodetector based on a VG/indium tin oxide (ITO) composite structure, where the VG layer serves as the light absorption layer while ITO works as the carrier conduction channel, thus achieving the broadband and high response nature of a photodetector. Under the illumination of infrared light, photoinduced carriers generated in VG could transfer to the floating ITO layer, which makes them separate and diffuse to electrodes quickly, finally realizing large photocurrent detectivity. This kind of composite structure photodetector possesses a room temperature photoresponsivity as high as ~0.7 A/W at a wavelength of 980 nm, and it still maintains an acceptable performance at temperatures as low as 87 K. In addition, a response time of 5.8 s is observed, ~10 s faster than VG photodetectors. Owing to the unique three-dimensional morphology structure of the as-prepared VG, the photoresponsivity of the VG/ITO composite photodetector also presented selectivity of incidence angles. Due to their unique anisotropic morphology and properties, graphene-based materials have received extensive attention in the field of smart materials. Recent studies show that graphene-based materials have potential application as a dispersed phase to develop high-performance electrorheological (ER) fluids, a kind of smart suspension whose viscosity and viscoelastic properties can be adjusted by external electric fields. However, pure graphene is not suitable for use as the dispersed phase of ER fluids due to the electric short circuit caused by its high electrical conductivity under electric fields. However, graphene oxide (GO) and graphene-based composites are suitable for use as the dispersed phase of ER fluids and show significantly enhanced property. In this review, we look critically at the latest developments of ER fluids based on GO and graphene-based composites, including their preparation, electrically tunable ER property, and dispersed stability. The mechanism behind enhanced ER property is discussed according to dielectric spectrum analysis. We prepared poly(ethylaniline)-coated graphene oxide nanoflakes and then treated them with different concentrations of hydrazine solution to form dielectric composite nanoflakes having different reduction degrees of reduced graphene oxide core and insulating polyethylaniline shell (PEANI/rGO). The morphology of PEANI/rGO was observed by scanning electron microscopy, while the chemical structure was confirmed by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer. The influence of reduction degrees on the conductivity, dielectric polarization and electrorheological effect of PEANI/rGO in suspensions was investigated by dielectric spectroscopy and rheological test under electric fields. It shows that the PEANI/rGO has two interfacial polarization processes respectively due to rGO core and PEANI shell. As the number of hydrazine increases, the conductivity and polarization rate of rGO core increase. As a result, the difference between the polarization rate of rGO core and that of the PEANI shell gradually becomes large. This increased difference does not significantly decrease the yield stress but causes the flow instability of PEANI/GO suspensions under the simultaneous action of electric and shear fields. Polymerized ionic liquids (PILs) show potential to be used as new water-free polyelectrolyte-based electrorheological (ER) material. To direct ER material design at the molecular level, unveiling structure-property relationships is essential. While a few studies compare the mobile ions in PILs there is still a limited understanding of how the structure of tethered counterions on backbone influences ER property. In this study, three PILs with same mobile anions but different tethered countercations (e.g., poly(dimethyldiallylammonium) P[DADMA]+, poly(benzylethyl) trimethylammonium P[VBTMA]+, and poly(1-ethyl-4-vinylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate) P[C2VIm]+) are prepared and the influence of tethered countercations on the ER property of PILs is investigated. It shows that among these PILs, P[DADMA]+ PILs have the strongest ER property and P[C2VIm]+ PILs have the weakest one. By combining dielectric spectra analysis with DFT calculation and activation energy measurement, it can clarify that the influence of tethered counterions on ER property is mainly associated with ion-pair interaction energy that is affecting ionic conductivity and interfacial polarization induced by ion motion. P[DADMA]+ has the smallest ion-pair interaction energy with mobile ions, which can result in the highest ionic conductivity and the fastest interfacial polarization rate for its strongest ER property. By using different conductivity of polyaniline as filler, a kind of poly(ionic liquid)/polyaniline composite particles was synthesized to investigate the influence of dielectric polarization rate difference between filler and matrix on the electrorheological response and flow stability of composite-based electrorheological fluids under simultaneous effect of shear and electric fields. The composite particles were prepared by a post ion-exchange procedure and then treated by ammonia or hydrazine to obtain different conductivity of polyaniline. Their electrorheological response was measured by dispersing these composite particles in insulating carrier liquid under electric fields. It showed that the composite particles treated by ammonia had the strongest electrorheological response and most stable flow behavior in a broad shear rate region from 0.5 s−1 to 1000 s−1. By using dielectric spectroscopy, it found that the enhanced electrorheological response with stable flow depended on the matching degree of the dielectric polarization rates between poly(ionic liquid) matrix and polyaniline filler. The closer their polarization rates are, the more stable the flow curves are. We used inherently conducting polyaniline as a core to develop a type of poly(ionic liquid)s-capsulated polyaniline composite particles in order to both overcome the surface charged character of pure poly(ionic liquid)s particles prepared by post ion-exchange procedure, and enhance electrorheological (ER) effect. The structure was characterized by different techniques and the electrorheological suspension was prepared by dispersing the composite particles in silicone oil. Under electric fields, the electrorheological properties of the suspensions of poly(ionic liquid)s-capsulated polyaniline composite particles were measured and compared with their single forms. It is demonstrated that the composite particles have distinctly enhanced electrorheological effect compared with the pure poly(ionic liquid)s and polyaniline particles under electric stimuli. At 4 kV/mm of electric field, the yield stress of the suspension of poly(ionic liquid)s-capsulated polyaniline composite particles in silicone oil is about 2.3 kPa, which is twice as high as 1.2 kPa stress of the suspension of poly(ionic liquid) particles and 2.5 times as high as 0.9 kPa stress of the suspension of polyaniline particles. By using dielectric spectroscopy, microscopic observation, and oscillation rheology, we studied the origin of this enhanced electrorheological effect. The results indicated that wrapping polyaniline into poly(ionic liquid)s could partly suppress the positively charged surface state of poly(ionic liquid)s particles prepared by post ion-exchange procedure and improve the column-like electrorheological structure.
