Chang'e-6 (CE-6) is the first sample-return mission from the lunar farside and will be launched in May of 2024. The landing area is in the south of the Apollo basin inside the South Pole Aitken basin. Statistics and analyses of impact craters in the landing area are essential to support safe landing and geologic studies. In particular, the crater size–frequency distribution information of the landing area is critical to understanding the provenance of the CE-6 lunar samples to be returned and can be used to verify and refine the lunar chronology model by combining with the radioisotope ages of the relevant samples. In this research, a digital orthophoto map (DOM) mosaic with resolution of 3 m/pixel of the CE-6 landing area was generated from the 743 Narrow Angle Camera of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter Camera. Based on the DOM, craters were extracted by an automated method and checked manually. A total of 770,731 craters were extracted in the whole area of 246 km × 135 km, 511,484 craters of which were within the mare area. Systematic analyses of the crater distribution, completeness, spatial density, and depth-to-diameter ratio were conducted. Geologic model age estimation was carried out in the mare area that was divided into three geologic units according to the TiO2 abundance. The result showed that the east part of the mare had the oldest model age of μ 3.27 − 0.045 + 0.036 Ga, and the middle part of the mare had the youngest model age of μ 2.49 − 0.073 + 0.072 Ga. The crater catalogue and the surface model age analysis results were used to support topographic and geologic analyses of the pre-selected landing area of the CE-6 mission before the launch and will contribute to further scientific researches after the lunar samples are returned to Earth. Optimizing the energy structure to effectively enhance the integration level of renewable energy is an important pathway for achieving dual carbon goals. This study utilizes an improved multi-objective particle swarm optimization algorithm based on load fluctuation rates to optimize the architecture and unit capacity of hydrogen production systems. It investigates the optimal configuration methods for the architectural model of new energy hydrogen production systems in Xining City, Qinghai Province, as well as the internal storage battery, ALK hydrogen production equipment, and PEM hydrogen production equipment, aiming at various scenarios of power sources such as wind, solar, wind–solar complementary, and wind–solar–storage complementary, as well as intermittent hydrogen production scenarios such as hydrogen stations, hydrogen metallurgy, and continuous hydrogen production scenarios such as hydrogen methanol production. The results indicate that the fluctuation of hydrogen load scenarios has a significant impact on the installed capacity and initial investment of the system. Compared with the single-channel photovoltaic hydrogen production scheme, the dual-channel hydrogen production scheme still reduces equipment capacity by 6.04% and initial investment by 6.16% in the chemical hydrogen scenario with the least load fluctuation. Impact craters serve as recorders of lunar evolutionary history, and determining the stratigraphic ages of craters is crucial. However, the age of many craters on the Moon remains undetermined. The morphology of craters is closely related to their stratigraphic ages. In the study, we systematically and quantitatively analyzed seven morphological parameters of 432 impact craters with known stratigraphic ages (Copernican, Eratosthenian, Imbrian), including crater depth, wall width, wall height, rim height, irregularity, volume, and roughness, as well as rock abundance. The study provided a range of morphological parameters for craters from the Copernican, Eratosthenian, and Imbrian. Additionally, we derived power law relationships between five morphological parameters and crater diameter, excluding irregularity and roughness. Furthermore, the transitional crater diameters from simple to complex crater morphology were determined for the Copernican and Eratosthenian, approximately 13 km and 15 km, respectively. These results suggest systematic differences in the lunar regolith in different stratigraphic ages. For impact craters of the same diameter, as crater age increases, irregularity tends to be greater, while crater depth, wall width, wall height, rim height, volume, roughness, and rock abundance tend to be smaller. Therefore, in cases where the diameter is determined, the actual values of morphological parameters and rock abundance can be used to constrain the stratigraphic age information of craters of an unknown age. The illumination conditions of the lunar south pole region are complex due to the rugged terrain and very low solar elevation angles, posing significant challenges to the safety of lunar landing and rover explorations. High-spatial and temporal-resolution analyses of the illumination conditions in the south pole region are essential to support mission planning and surface operations. This paper proposes a method for illumination condition analysis in the lunar pole region using multi-temporal high-resolution orbital images with a pre-selected landing area of Chang'E-7 as the study area. Firstly, a database of historical multi-temporal high-resolution (0.69–1.97 m/pixel) orbital images, with associated image acquisition time, solar elevation angle, and azimuth angle, is established after preprocessing and registration. Secondly, images with the nearest solar elevation and azimuth at the planned time for mission operations are retrieved from the database for subsequent illumination condition analysis and exploration support. The differences in the actual solar positions at the mission moments from that of the nearest sun position image are calculated and their impact on illumination conditions is evaluated. Experimental results of the study area demonstrate that the constructed image database and the proposed illumination analysis method using multi-temporal images, with the assistance of DEM in a small number of cases, can effectively support the mission planning and operations for the Chang'E-7 mission in the near future. While the original equipment manufacturers are developing engines that can withstand higher PCP, the methodology to maximize the thermal efficiency gain with different PCP limits is still not well-known or documented in the literature. This study aims to provide guidance on how to co-optimize air system parameters, compression ratio, and intake valve closing (IVC) timing of heavy-duty turbocharged diesel engines to enhance thermal efficiency with peak cylinder pressure (PCP) constraints. In this study, a one-dimensional turbocharged engine model is established and validated by experimental data. The effects of turbocharger efficiency, boost pressure, high-pressure exhaust gas recirculation (HP EGR) ratio, compression ratio (CR), and IVC timing on diesel engine efficiency are assessed under PCP constraints through parametric analysis. The results indicate that for enhancing engine thermal efficiency under limited PCP, an increment in boost pressure and CR, and late IVC timing compared to baseline is required. By multiple parameter optimization, the best parameter combination under different PCP constraints is proposed. At a PCP limit of 20 MPa, the combination of a compression ratio of 18.57, boost pressure of 298 kPa, and IVC timing of −95.2 °CA ATDC yields a 1.56% (absolute value) improvement in ITEn over the baseline condition. Raising the PCP limits from 20 MPa to 25 MPa requires increasing the compression ratio to 21.92, boost pressure to 308 kPa, and delaying the intake valve closing timing to −88.7 °CA ATDC, which results in an absolute improvement of 0.86% in ITEn. Baseline engine configuration is updated accordingly to validate the thermal efficiency improvement strategy at a 25 MPa PCP limitation. Internal combustion (IC) engines serve as power devices that are widely applied in the fields of transport, engineering machinery, stationary power generation, etc., and are evolving towards the goal of higher efficiency and lower environmental impacts. In this Editorial, the role of IC engines for future transport and energy systems is discussed, and research directions for advancing IC engine and fuel technologies are recommended. Finally, we introduce the 14 technical papers collected for this Special Issue, which cover a wide range of research topics, including diesel spray characteristics, combustion technologies for low- and zero-carbon fuels, advanced combustion mode, fuel additive effects, engine operation under extreme conditions and advanced materials and manufacturing processes. The lunar crater production function describes the general pattern of the size–frequency distribution of craters on the lunar surface, and it is the foundation of the surface dating method via crater counting. In addition, the lunar crater production function has been extended to other celestial bodies and used to analyze the meteorite flux of the inner solar system. The basic process of establishing the lunar crater production function is to map in an ideal way the primary craters in different geological units, and then to normalize all of the corresponding size–frequency distributions using a mathematical model. Currently, the most widely used lunar crater production functions have been established based on the images acquired in the last century. However, now they can be refined with newly obtained high-resolution images. In this research, we mapped all of the primary craters in 13 regions on the lunar surface with the images acquired using the narrow angle camera and wide angle camera onboard the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, and then we fitted the lunar crater production function with a polynomial. The resultant new lunar crater production function is largely comparable with the previous results, and the difference is mainly at the large diameter end. We analyzed the uncertainty of model fitting as well as the difference in the crater measurements and demonstrated the reliability of the new production function. The Chang'e-4 (CE-4) lunar probe, the first soft landing spacecraft on the far side of the Moon, successfully landed in the Von Kármán crater on 3 January 2019. Geological studies of the landing area have been conducted and more intensive studies will be carried out with the in situ measured data. The chronological study of the maria basalt surrounding the CE-4 landing area is significant to the related studies. Currently, the crater size-frequency distribution (CSFD) technique is the most popular method to derive absolute model ages (AMAs) of geological units where no returned sample is available, and it has been widely used in dating maria basalt on the lunar surface. In this research, we first make a mosaic with multi-orbital Chang'e-2 (CE-2) images as a base map. Coupled with the elevation data and FeO content, nine representative areas of basalt units surrounding the CE-4 landing area are outlined and their AMAs are derived. The dating results of the nine basalt units indicate that the basalts erupted from 3.42 to 2.28 Ga ago in this area, a period much longer than derived by previous studies. A natural-gas-diesel dual-fuel marine engine with a pre-chamber is a promising solution for ocean transportation to meet the International Maritime Organization (IMO) emission regulations. This engine system employs a pre-chamber with direct injection of diesel to ignite premixed natural gas due to its higher ignition energy, which can enable lower lean limit and higher thermal efficiency. The dual-fuel pre-chamber marine engine presents complex multi-regime combustion characteristics in- and outside the pre-chamber, thus posing challenges in its numerical simulation in a cost-effective manner. Therefore, this paper presents a three-dimensional modeling study for the multi-regime combustion in a large-bore two-stroke marine dual-fuel engine, proposing a novel mapping approach, which couples the well-stirred reactor (WSR) model with the G-equation model to achieve high computational accuracy and efficiency simultaneously. In-depth analysis is performed using representative exothermic reaction (RXR) analysis and premixed turbulent combustion fundamentals to better understand the combustion process and to provide guidance in the selection of mapping timing. The results show that the use of mapping to switch from the WSR to the G-equation model can effectively reduce the runtime significantly by 71.5%, meanwhile maintaining similar accuracies in predictions of in-cylinder pressure traces, HRR and NOx emissions, compared to using WSR all along. The age of Mars yardangs is significant in studying their development and the evolution of paleoclimate conditions. For planetary surface or landforms, a common method for dating is based on the frequency and size distribution of all the superposed craters after they are formed. However, there is usually a long duration for the yardangs' formation, and they will alter the superposed craters, making it impossible to give a reliable dating result with the method. An indirect method by analyzing the ages of the superposed layered ejecta was devised in the research. First, the layered ejecta that are superposed on and not altered by the yardangs are identified and mapped. Then, the ages of the layered ejecta are derived according to the crater frequency and size distribution on them. These ages indicate that the yardangs ceased development by these times, and the ages are valuable for studying the evolution of the yardangs. This indirect dating method was applied to the areas of Martian yardangs in the Medusae Fossae Formation (MFF). The ages of the selected six layered ejecta range from ~0.50 Ga to ~1.5 Ga, indicating that the evolution of the corresponding yardangs had been ceased before these times. Analysis of more layered ejecta craters and superposed yardangs implies that yardangs in the MFF have a long history of development and some yardangs are still in active development. The Chang'E-2 digital elevation model (DEM, named CE2TMap2015), which is the highest resolution DEM product in China, was released with global coverage of the lunar surface. A detailed geometric quality assessment of the product is desirable for wider applications by users. A novel procedure for evaluating DEM geometric quality, which investigates both the global geometric uncertainty and local gross errors, is proposed in this paper. First, the DEM was divided into regular blocks and matched with the reference DEM. Then, the characteristics of errors were investigated using the statistical information of the matched tie points. Next, the local outlier factor (LOF) algorithm was performed to locate the gross errors. In our experiment, CE2TMap2015 was evaluated using the proposed method, with SLDEM2015 as the reference DEM. The results show that there were widespread geometric inconsistencies with an area-weighted average of 183.1 m horizontally (with the standard deviation being 101.2 m) and 2.3 m vertically (with the standard deviation being 15.4 m). Gross errors were detected automatically and were excluded in the statistical analysis. The periodic errors were extracted in the frequency domain using a Fourier transform. Our research results provide instructional information for the utilization of CE2TMap2015 by world-wide users.
