Ferrihydrite is usually used as a remedy for arsenic (As)-contaminated soil due to its strong affinity and large specific surface area. However, its noncrystalline phase makes it unstable in long-term applications in the soil. In this study, a soil incubation experiment was designed using the diffusive gradient in thin film (DGT) technique and spectral techniques to investigate the fate of As-bearing ferrihydrite [As(V)-Fh] after long-term incubation at different soil water holding capacities (SWHCs). After As(V)-Fh (0.05 and 0.005 As/Fe molar ratio) was incubated in soil for 360 days, both DGT-derived labile As and Fe were released at 70% SWHC and 120% SWHC into the soil (at a vertical depth of 12 cm). The concentrations of DGT-As and DGT-Fe increased with incubation time and were greater at 120% SWHC. The results of X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that As(V)-Fh gradually transformed into hematite and goethite after 360 days of incubation. Goethite was mainly found in the 120% SWHC treatment after 180 days. Hematite and goethite formation rates were greater in the 120% SWHC treatment and in the bottom soil layer. Mechanistic analysis based on X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) revealed that the variation in soil pH and the formation of Fe(II) (under flooded water conditions) are the two key factors promoting the formation of hematite (dehydrogenation and dehydration) and goethite (As(V)-Fh dissociation and reorganization). The As release mainly occurred due to the loss of adsorption sites. Thus, it is recommended that ferrihydrite be applied in paddy–dry rotations or dry-field patterns to effectively avoid the loss of As(V)-Fh in long-term-saturated soil. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The structure and assembly properties of ferritin derived from aquatic products remain to be explored. Constructing diverse three-dimensional (3D) protein architectures with the same building blocks has important implications for nutrient delivery, medicine and materials science. Herein, ferritin from Asterias forbesii (AfFer) was prepared, and its crystal structure was resolved at 1.91 Å for the first time. Notably, different from the crystal structure of other reported ferritin, AfFer exhibited a BCT lattice arrangement in its crystals. Bioinspired by the crystal structure of AfFer, we described an effective approach for manufacturing 3D porous, crystalline nanoarchitectures by redesigning the shared protein interface involved in different 3D protein arrays. Based on this strategy, two 3D superlattices of body-centered tetragonal and simple cubicwere constructed with ferritin molecules as the building blocks. In alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD), hepatic reductions in vitamin A and perturbations in vitamin A metabolism are common. However, the roles that the vitamin A receptors, termed retinoic acid receptors (RARs), may have in preventing the pathophysiology of ALD remains unclear. Our prior data indicate that a RARβ agonist limits the pathology of alcohol-related liver disease. Thus, we generated liver-specific AlbCre–RARβ knockout (BKO) mice and compared them to wild type (WT) mice in an early ALD model. Both strains showed similar blood ethanol concentrations and ETOH-metabolizing enzymes. However, the livers of pair-fed-BKO and ETOH-BKO mice developed higher levels of steatosis and triglycerides than pair-fed-WT and ETOH-WT mice. The increased hepatic steatosis observed in the pair-fed-BKO and ETOH-BKO mice was associated with higher lipid synthesis/trafficking transcripts and lower beta-oxidation transcripts. ETOH-BKO mice also exhibited a higher integrated stress response (ISR) signature, including higher transcript and protein levels of ATF4 and its target, 4-EBP1. In human hepatocytes (HepG2) that lack RARβ (RARβ-KO), ETOH treatments resulted in greater reactive oxygen species compared to their parental cells. Notably, even without ETOH, ATF4 and 4-EBP1 protein levels were higher in the RARβ-KO cells than in their parental cells. These 4-EBP1 increases were greatly attenuated in cultured ATF4-deficient and RARβ/ATF4-deficient HepG2, suggesting that RARβ is a crucial negative regulator of 4-EBP1 through ATF4 in cultured hepatocytes. The topological insulator 2D Bi2Se3 is promising for electronic devices due to its unique electronic properties; however, it is challenging to prepare antioxidative nanosheets since Bi2Se3 is prone to oxidation. Surface passivation using ligand agents after Bi2Se3 exfoliation works well to protect the surface, but the process is time-consuming and technically challenging; a passivation agent that is stable under a highly biased potential is significant for in situ passivation of the Bi2Se3 surface. In this work, the roles of halide anions (Cl−, Br−, and I−) in respect of the chemical properties of synthetic Bi2Se3 nanosheets during electrochemical intercalated exfoliation were investigated to determine the antioxidation capacity. It was found that Bi2Se3 nanosheets prepared in a solution of tetrabutylammonium chloride (TBA+ and Cl−) have the best oxidation resistance via the surface bonding of Bi with Cl, which promotes obtaining better device stability. This work paves an avenue for adjusting the components of the electrolyte to further promote the stability of 2D Bi2Se3-nanosheet-based electronic devices. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A better understanding of the P dynamic resupply roles of fertilization from soil solids to solution is urgently required to optimize sustainable P fertilizer management practices for efficient supply. A five–year fertilization experiment was used to investigate the effects on soil P fractions and availability, the kinetic P resupply based on a novel simulation technique (Diffusive gradients in thin films (DGT) and DGT–induced fluxes in sediments and soils (DIFS)) and to identify dominant factors during the maize season under five treatments (no fertilizer (CK), chemical fertilizer (NPK), chemical fertilizer combined with bone meal fertilizer (NPKC), crop straw (NPKS) and bioorganic fertilizer (NPKM)). The results showed that the NPKC and NPKM treatments had higher enhancement effects on Olsen–P and organic P and inorganic Ca2–P, Ca8–P, Al–P and Fe–P at maize growth stages, and they buffered pH decrease to delay the substantial Fe–P and Al–P release until a late stage. Inorganic Ca2–P, Ca8–P, Al–P and Fe–P heavily effected the Olsen–P levels. The NPKS, NPKC and NPKM treatments yielded higher CDGT–P levels and a stronger resupply capacity, reflected by higher R and CE/Csoln and smaller Tc values. The simulation and path model results revealed that the maize plant P uptake was determined by soil P resupply and an inorganic P supply pool. They were positively dominated by soil organic matter (SOM). Our results suggested that organic fertilization, especially NPKC and NPKM treatments, provided greater enhancement effects on the P supply pool and P resupply for higher plant P uptake, identifying them as highly effective P management practices for developing sustainable agriculture. Under the background of government-oriented environmental governance in China, the environmental effect of local official turnover has become an important issue. How to improve governmental governance is an important issue that profoundly affects local environmental governance. Based on a literature analysis, this paper establishes an environmental-effect identification equation to deeply analyze the environmental effect of local official turnover on private enterprises. Then, this paper empirically analyzes the effect of local personnel turnover on the environmental pollution control of private enterprises and the persistence of this effect. The results show that the turnover of local officials has a positive effect on the pollution control investment of private enterprises, but the effect is not persistent. The interest collusion between local officials and private enterprises tends to be one main reason to explain the environmental effect, and two different types of interest collusions are determined: priority to self-interest and economic development. The reasons why the positive effect cannot last for long may be attributed to a lack of systematic and effective institutions or temporary administrative measures. It is important to make local officials fully realize the "green wealth" value of the ecosystems, to change their economic priorities. As a natural phenolic compound, carvacrol has attracted much attention due to its excellent antibacterial and antioxidant activities. However, its application is limited due to its instability, such as easy volatilization, easy oxidation, etc. Protein-polysaccharide interactions provide strategies for improving their stability issues. In this study, the plant-based carvacrol microcapsules via complex coacervation between walnut meal protein isolate (WMPI) and gum Arabic (GA) has been fabricated and characterized. The formation conditions of WMPI-GA coacervates were determined by some parameters, such as pH, zeta-potential, and turbidity. The optimum preparation conditions were achieved at pH 4.0 with a WMPI-to-GA ratio of 6:1 (w/w). The mean particle size, loading capacity (LC), and encapsulation efficiency (EE) of the microcapsules were 43.21 μm, 26.37%, and 89.87%, respectively. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and fluorescence microscopy further confirmed the successful microencapsulation of carvacrol. The microencapsulation of carvacrol improved the thermal stability of the free carvacrol. The swelling capacity results indicated that it could resist gastric acid, and facilitate its intestinal absorption. Meanwhile, the carvacrol molecules trapped within the microcapsules could be continuously released in a concentration-dependent manner. Furthermore, the microcapsules presented good antioxidant activity and antibacterial activity against the Gram-negative (E. coli) and the Gram-positive (S. aureus) bacteria. A rotating body consisting of a rotating shaft and bearings inevitably generates voltage and current. The potential difference between the bearing and the shaft is the main cause of electrical corrosion, which causes motor failure, shortened bearing life, and many safety issues. To prevent corrosion, passive shaft-grounding devices use conductive materials and brushes; however, these devices cannot be completely grounded, so there is a difference in local potential, and brush friction generates a shaft current. The cumulative effect causes electrical corrosion; therefore, in this study, an electrical corrosion protection device for the rotating power supply shaft was developed. It detected current and potential difference and established a feedback system on the rotating shaft. It also energized the rotating shaft using an external power supply to eliminate the potential difference on the shaft and reduce electrical corrosion. The result was prolonged motor life and improved stability, operating efficiency, and operability of related equipment. In this study, a rotating-shaft test rig was set up, and a constant current was applied to simulate the potential difference and verify the performance of the anti-corrosion device. Gradually, the design scheme was optimized; the potential difference on the rotating shaft was accurately quantified; and the goal of controlling the potential difference within 2 mV was achieved. Finally, the electrical corrosion protection device was applied to the rotating shaft of a merchant ship, and the current and potential difference on the rotating shaft were monitored for 30 days. The harmfulness of fine dust generated by automobile brakes to the environment has recently received attention. Therefore, we aimed to analyze and regulate the brake wear particles in dynamometers. To accurately measure the number of particles and particle mass, the sampling system used needs to minimize transportation losses and reduce the residence time in the brake enclosure system. The brake dust measurement system currently used can estimate the main transportation loss but cannot evaluate the complex flow field in the brake enclosure system under different design conditions. We used computational fluid dynamics (CFD) technology to predict the behavior of brake wear particles and analyze the static pressure characteristics, the uniformity of the system flow, and the residence time of the brake dust particles in the system. In addition, we compared the design of the basic structure of the brake enclosure system, combined with the four factors affecting the design of the brake dynamometer, with the enclosure system. As a result, we proposed that the design of the cross section of the brake dynamometer enclosure should be circular, the outlet angle of the enclosure should be 15°, the caliper should be fixed to 150°, and two sets of splitters should be added. This design improves pressure loss and reduces the residence time of brake dust particles in the brake enclosure system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
