Transparent polysiloxane elastomers with good self-healing and reprocessing abilities have attracted significant attention in the field of artificial skin and flexible displays. Herein, we propose a simple one-pot method to fabricate a room temperature self-healable polysiloxane elastomer (HPDMS) by introducing dynamic and reversible imine bonds and boroxine into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) networks. The presence of imine bonds and boroxine is proved by FT−IR and NMR spectra. The obtained HPDMS elastomer is highly transparent with a transmittance of up to 80%. The TGA results demonstrated that the HPDMS elastomer has good heat resistance and can be used in a wide temperature range. A lower glass transition temperature (Tg, −127.4 °C) was obtained and revealed that the elastomer is highly flexible at room temperature. Because of the reformation of dynamic reversible imine bonds and boroxine, the HPDMS elastomers exhibited excellent autonomous self-healing properties. After healing for 3 h, the self-healing efficiency of HPDMS reached 96.3% at room temperature. Moreover, the elastomers can be repeatedly reprocessed multiple times under milder conditions. Heterojunction semiconductors have been extensively applied in various optoelectronic devices due to their unique carrier transport characteristics. However, it is still a challenge to construct heterojunctions based on colloidal quantum dots (CQDs) due to stress and lattice mismatch. Herein, HgSe/CsPbBrxI3−x heterojunctions with type I band alignment are acquired that are derived from minor lattice mismatch (~1.5%) via tuning the ratio of Br and I in halide perovskite. Meanwhile, HgSe CQDs with oleylamine ligands can been exchanged with a halide perovskite precursor, acquiring a smooth and compact quantum dot film. The photoconductive detector based on HgSe/CsPbBrxI3−x heterojunction presents a distinct photoelectric response under an incident light of 630 nm. The work provides a promising strategy to construct CQD-based heterojunctions, simultaneously achieving inorganic ligand exchange, which paves the way to obtain high-performance photodetectors based on CQD heterojunction films. Two-dimensional material indium selenide (InSe) holds great promise for applications in electronics and optoelectronics by virtue of its fascinating properties. However, most multilayer InSe-based transistors suffer from extrinsic scattering effects from interface disorders and the environment, which cause carrier mobility and density fluctuations and hinder their practical application. In this work, we employ the non-destructive method of van der Waals (vdW) integration to improve the electron mobility of back-gated multilayer InSe FETs. After introducing the hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) as both an encapsulation layer and back-gate dielectric with the vdW interface, as well as graphene serving as a buffer contact layer, the electron mobilities of InSe FETs are substantially enhanced. The vdW-integrated devices exhibit a high electron mobility exceeding 103 cm2 V−1 s−1 and current on/off ratios of ~108 at room temperature. Meanwhile, the electron densities are found to exceed 1012 cm−2. In addition, the fabricated devices show an excellent stability with a negligible electrical degradation after storage in ambient conditions for one month. Electrical transport measurements on InSe FETs in different configurations suggest that a performance enhancement with vdW integration should arise from a sufficient screening effect on the interface impurities and an effective passivation of the air-sensitive surface. Understanding the composition of the bacterial community on the epidermis of wine grapes and in winery environments, as well as the response of grape epidermal bacteria to climatic factors, plays a significant role in ensuring grape health and promoting grape conversion into wine. This study utilized high-throughput sequencing to explore the composition of the bacterial community on the wine grape epidermis and representative wineries of three sub-regions of the Eastern Foothills of Helan Mountain, Ningxia. The results showed that the bacterial diversity and richness in the Yongning (YN) sub-region were the highest, with Qingtongxia (QTX) having the lowest levels of grape epidermal bacteria. The bacterial diversity and richness were the highest in Yinchuan (YC) and the lowest in YN in the winery environment (p < 0.05). The composition of dominant bacteria on the grape epidermis and in winery environments of the three sub-regions was not different at the phylum and genus level, but the levels of these dominant bacteria were different among the sub-regions. There was a correlation between grape epidermal bacteria and climatic factors. Approximately 93% of the bacterial genera on the grape epidermal genera in the three sub-regions are present in the winery environment and contain all the dominant bacterial genera on the epidermis. Background: The burden of cardiovascular diseases caused by ambient particulate air pollution is universal. An increasing number of studies have investigated the potential effects of exposure to particulate air pollution on endothelial function, which is one of the important mechanisms for the onset and development of cardiovascular disease. However, no previous study has conducted a summary analysis of the potential effects of particulate air pollution on endothelial function. Objectives: To summarize the evidence for the potential effects of short-term exposure to ambient particulate air pollution on endothelial function based on existing studies. Methods: A systematic literature search on the relationship between ambient particulate air pollution and biomarkers of endothelial function including endothelin-1 (ET-1), E-selectin, intercellular cell adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), and vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) was conducted in PubMed, Scopus, EMBASE, and Web of Science up to 20 May 2023. Subsequently, a meta-analysis was conducted using a random effects model. Results: A total of 18 studies were included in this meta-analysis. A 10 μg/m3 increase in short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 was associated with a 1.55% (95% CI: 0.89%, 2.22%) increase in ICAM-1 and a 1.97% (95% CI: 0.86%, 3.08%) increase in VCAM-1. The associations of ET-1 (0.22%, 95% CI: −4.94%, 5.65%) and E-selectin (3.21%, 95% CI: −0.90% 7.49%) with short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 were statistically insignificant. Conclusion: Short-term exposure to ambient PM2.5 pollution may significantly increase the levels of typical markers of endothelial function, including ICAM-1 and VCAM-1, suggesting potential endothelial dysfunction following ambient air pollution exposure. Hydroxysafflor yellow A (HSYA) is derived from Carthamus tinctorius L. (Honghua in Chinese) and is used to treat cardiovascular and cerebrovascular disease. However, the mechanism by which HSYA treats ischemic stroke following atherosclerosis (ISFA) remains unclear. The targets and pathways of HSYA against ISFA were obtained using network analysis. A total of 3335 potential IFSA-related targets were predicted using the GenCards and Drugbank databases, and a total of 88 potential HSYA-related targets were predicted using the Swiss Target Prediction database. A total of 62 HSYA-related targets against IFSA were obtained. The network was composed of HSYA, 62 targets, and 20 pathways. The top 20 targets were constructed via the protein–protein interaction (PPI) network. Gene Ontology analysis revealed that the targets were involved in signal transduction, protein phosphorylation, the cytoplasm, the plasma membrane, the cytosol, zinc ion binding, ATP binding, protein kinase binding/activity, and enzyme binding. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway enrichment analysis revealed that the pathways were associated with cancer, inflammatory mediator regulation of the transient receptor potential channels, and microRNA in cancer. Additionally, molecular docking indicated that HSYA mainly interacts with five targets, namely interleukin 1 beta (IL-1β), signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (STAT3), E1A-binding protein p300 (EP300), protein kinase C alpha (PRKCA), and inhibitor of nuclear factor kappa B kinase subunit beta (IKBKB). In animal experiments, HSYA administration ameliorated the infarct size, neurological deficit score, histopathological changes, carotid intima-media thickness (IMT), and blood lipid level (total cholesterol and triglycerides). Immunochemistry and quantitative PCR showed that HSYA intervention downregulated the expression of STAT3, EP300, PRKCA, and IKBKB, and the enzyme-linked immunoassay showed reduced IL-1β levels. The investigation of plasma channels induced by focused ultra-short 1030-nm laser pulses in bulk of synthetic High Pressure High Temperature (HPHT) diamond revealed strong dependence of their spatial parameters on the used numerical aperture of the lens (NA = 0.15–0.45). It was shown that at weak focusing conditions it is possible to significantly increase the length of the plasma channel with a slight increase in pulse power, while tight focusing allows one to obtain more compact structures in the same range of used powers. Such a dependence paves the way to new possibilities in 3D processing of transparent dielectrics, allowing one, for example, to vary the spatial parameters of modified regions without changing the setup, but only by controlling the lens aperture, which seems very promising for industrial applications. Coiled carbon nanotubes (CCNTs) as a promising nanometer scale spring are investigated for the effect of the defects on the tensile mechanical properties of CCNTs by using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Six samples of defective CCNTs are constructed by introducing the defects in the different positions. The results show an obvious decrease in the spring constant and elastic limit of defective CCNTs, which results in the lower energy storage ability during the elastic range compared with the perfect CCNTs. However, the defected CCNTs exhibit better ductility (138.9%) and higher energy absorbing ability (1539.93 J/g) during the fracture process since introduced defects change the deformation pattern. Furthermore, among the defected CCNTs, the stiffness (1.48~1.93 nN/nm), elastic limit (75.2~88.7%), ductility (108.5~138.9%), and deformation pattern can be adjusted by changing the position or the type of defects. This study firstly provides insight into the effects of Stone–Wales (SW) and vacancy defects on the mechanical properties of CCNTs, and the obtained results are meaningful for designing CCNTs with specified properties by introducing defects. Silicon elastomers with excellent self-healing and reprocessing abilities are highly desirable for the advancement of next-generation energy, electronic, and robotic applications. In this study, a dual cross-linked self-healing polysiloxane elastomer was facilely fabricated by introducing an exchangeable imine bond and boroxine into polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) networks. The PDMS elastomers exhibited excellent self-healing properties due to the synergistic effect of dynamic reversible imine bonds and boroxine. After healing for 2 h, the mechanical strength of the damaged elastomers completely and rapidly recovered at room temperature. Furthermore, the prepared PDMS elastomers could be repeatedly reprocessed multiple times under milder conditions without significant degradation in mechanical performance. In addition, a stretchable and self-healable electrical sensor was developed by integrating carbon nanotubes (CNTs) with the PDMS elastomer, which can be employed to monitor multifarious human motions in real time. We extracted magnesium-rich calcium phosphate bioceramics from tilapia bone using a gradient thermal treatment approach and investigated their chemical and physicochemical properties. X-ray diffraction showed that tilapia fish bone-derived hydroxyapatite (FHA) was generated through the first stage of thermal processing at 600–800 °C. Using FHA as a precursor, fish bone biphasic calcium phosphate (FBCP) was produced after the second stage of thermal processing at 900–1200 °C. The beta-tricalcium phosphate content in the FBCP increased with an increasing calcination temperature. The fact that the lattice spacing of the FHA and FBCP was smaller than that of commercial hydroxyapatite (CHA) suggests that Mg-substituted calcium phosphate was produced via the gradient thermal treatment. Both the FHA and FBCP contained considerable quantities of magnesium, with the FHA having a higher concentration. In addition, the FHA and FBCP, particularly the FBCP, degraded faster than the CHA. After one day of degradation, both the FHA and FBCP released Mg2+, with cumulative amounts of 4.38 mg/L and 0.58 mg/L, respectively. Furthermore, the FHA and FBCP demonstrated superior bone-like apatite formation; they are non-toxic and exhibit better osteoconductive activity than the CHA. Double-track microstructures were induced in the bulk of a z-cut lithium niobate crystal by 1030 nm 240 fs ultrashort laser pulses with a repetition rate of 100 kHz at variable pulse energies exceeding the critical Kerr self-focusing power. The microstructure topography was characterized by atomic force microscopy in piezoelectric response mode. The spatial positions of laser-induced modification regions inside lithium niobate in the case of laser beam propagation along the crystal optical axis can be directly predicted by simple analytical expressions under the paraxial approximation. A dimensional analysis of the morphology of the double-track structures revealed that both their length and width exhibit a monotonous increase with the pulse energy. The presented results have important implications for direct laser writing technology in crystalline dielectric birefringent materials, paving the way to control the high spatial resolution by means of effective energy deposition in modified regions. A novel pyridine-modified chitosan (PYCS) adsorbent was prepared in a multistep procedure including the successive grafting of 2-(chloromethyl) pyridine hydrochloride and crosslinking with glutaraldehyde. Then, the as-prepared materials were used as adsorbents for the removal of metal ions from acidic wastewater. Batch adsorption experiments were carried out to study the impact of various factors such as solution pH value, contact time, temperature, and Fe (III) concentration. The results showed that the absorbent exhibited a high capacity of Fe (III) and the maximum adsorption capacity was up to 66.20 mg/g under optimal experimental conditions (the adsorption time = 12 h, pH = 2.5, and T = 303 K). Adsorption kinetics and isotherm data were accurately described by the pseudo-second-order kinetic model and Sips model, respectively. Thermodynamic studies confirmed that the adsorption was a spontaneous endothermic process. Moreover, the adsorption mechanism was investigated using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The results revealed the pyridine group forms a stable chelate with iron (III) ions. Therefore, this acid-resistant adsorbent exhibited excellent adsorption performance for heavy metal ions from acidic wastewater compared to the conventional adsorbents, helping realize direct decontamination and secondary utilization. Differing from metal alloys produced by conventional techniques, metallic products prepared by additive manufacturing experience distinct solidification thermal histories and solid−state phase transformation processes, resulting in unique microstructures and superior performance. This review starts with commonly used additive manufacturing techniques in steel−based alloy and then some typical microstructures produced by metal additive manufacturing technologies with different components and processes are summarized, including porosity, dislocation cells, dendrite structures, residual stress, element segregation, etc. The characteristic microstructures may exert a significant influence on the properties of additively manufactured products, and thus it is important to tune the components and additive manufacturing process parameters to achieve the desired microstructures. In this study, high-performance modified biochar/alginate composite bead (MCB/ALG) adsorbents were prepared from recycled agricultural waste corncobs by a high-temperature pyrolysis and KOH/FeCl3 activation process. The prepared MCB/ALG beads were tested for the adsorption of methylene blue (MB) dye from wastewater. A variety of analytical methods, such as SEM, BET, FTIR and XRD, were used to investigate the structure and properties of the as-prepared adsorbents. The effects of solution pH, time, initial MB concentration and adsorption temperature on the adsorption performance of MCB/ALG beads were discussed in detail. The results showed that the adsorption equilibrium of MB dye was consistent with the Langmuir isothermal model and the pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The maximum adsorption capacity of MCB/ALG−1 could reach 1373.49 mg/g at 303 K. The thermodynamic studies implied endothermic and spontaneous properties of the adsorption system. This high adsorption performance of MCB/ALG was mainly attributed to pore filling, hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interactions. The regeneration experiments showed that the removal rate of MB could still reach 85% even after five cycles of experiments, indicating that MCB/ALG had good reusability and stability. Due to their compositional complexity and flexibility, multi-principal element alloys (MPEAs) have a wide range of design and application prospects. Many researchers focus on tuning chemical inhomogeneity to improve the overall performance of MPEAs. In this paper, we systematically review the chemical inhomogeneity at different length scales in MPEAs and their impact on the mechanical properties of the alloys, aiming to provide a comprehensive understanding of this topic. Specifically, we summarize chemical short-range order, elemental segregation and some larger-scale chemical inhomogeneity in MPEAs, and briefly discuss their effects on deformation mechanisms. In addition, the chemical inhomogeneity in some other materials is also discussed, providing some new ideas for the design and preparation of high-performance MPEAs. A comprehensive understanding of the effect of chemical inhomogeneity on the mechanical properties and deformation mechanisms of MPEAs should be beneficial for the development of novel alloys with desired macroscopic mechanical properties through rationally tailoring chemical inhomogeneity from atomic to macroscale in MPEAs. Three-dimensional integrated packaging with through-silicon vias (TSV) can meet the requirements of high-speed computation, high-density storage, low power consumption, and compactness. However, higher power density increases heat dissipation problems, such as severe internal heat storage and prominent local hot spots. Among bulk materials, diamond has the highest thermal conductivity (≥2000 W/mK), thereby prompting its application in high-power semiconductor devices for heat dissipation. In this paper, we report an innovative bottom-up Cu electroplating technique with a high-aspect-ratio (10:1) through-diamond vias (TDV). The TDV structure was fabricated by laser processing. The electrolyte wettability of the diamond and metallization surface was improved by Ar/O plasma treatment. Finally, a Cu-filled high-aspect-ratio TDV was realized based on the bottom-up Cu electroplating process at a current density of 0.3 ASD. Titanium alloy is widely used in aerospace and other fields due to its low density, high specific strength, corrosion resistance, and other advantages. With the development of selective laser melting additive manufacturing technology, it is possible to manufacture triply periodic minimal surface porous structures. The effects of structural parameters on the mechanical properties of a Ti-6Al-4V Diamond (D)-type triply periodic minimal surface structure are studied. According to the characteristics of porous structures, the Gibson Ashby fitting formulas of D structures are modified using the concept of equivalent cross-sectional areas. The influence of cell size and surface thickness on the compressive modulus and strength of a D structure is discussed. Prediction formulas of the mechanical properties based on cell size and surface thickness are established by combining the relative density with the structural parameters. On this basis, the density optimization method is applied to the lightweight design of a rocket-related assembly based on D structure filling. To better understand how positive bias and deposition pressure affect the plasma flow properties in the deposition chamber during the bias-enhanced MPCVD process, a two-dimensional axisymmetric model based on the discharge mechanism of pure H2 was constructed. The coupling process between different physical field models of the electromagnetic field, plasma, and temperature field in the MPCVD reactor is realized. We studied the influence of positive bias voltage and deposition pressure variation on microwave plasma flow characteristics in the deposition chamber. There was a bias voltage threshold phenomenon in the case of positive bias, and the suitable value range was narrow. Additionally, with the increase in the deposition pressure, the electron temperature in the deposition chamber tends to increase locally and reaches its maximum value when the pressure is approximately 30 torr. Long-term, curative treatment of cutaneous T-cell lymphomas (CTCL) remains a major challenge. Therapy resistance is often based on apoptosis deficiency, and may depend on antiapoptotic Bcl-2 proteins, such as Bcl-2, Bcl-xL, Bcl-w and Mcl-1. For their targeting, several antagonists have been generated, which mimic the Bcl-2 homology domain 3 (BH3 mimetics). As dysregulation and overexpression of Mcl-1 has been reported in CTCL, the use of Mcl-1 inhibitors appears as an attractive strategy. Here, we investigated the effects of the selective Mcl-1 inhibitor S63845 in a series of four CTCL cell lines, in comparison to ABT-263 and ABT-737 (inhibitors of Bcl-2, Bcl-xL and Bcl-w). In two cell lines (HH, HuT-78), S63845 resulted in significant apoptosis induction, decrease in cell viability, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and caspase activation, while two other cell lines (MyLa, SeAx) remained completely resistant. An inverse correlation was found, as S63845-resistant cells were highly sensitive to ABT-263/-737, and S63845-sensitive cells showed only moderate sensitivity to ABTs. Combinations of S63845 and ABT-263 partially yielded synergistic effects. As concerning Bcl-2 protein expression, weaker Mcl-1 expression was found in S63845-resistant MyLa and SeAx, while for Bcl-2 and Bcl-xL, the lowest expression was found in the highly sensitive cell line HH. The most striking difference between S63845-resistant and -sensitive cells was identified for Bcl-w, which was exclusively expressed in S63845-resistant cells. Thus, CTCL may be efficiently targeted by BH3 mimetics, providing the right target is preselected, and Bcl-w expression may serve as a suitable marker. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An infrared transparent conductive material is a solution to realize the shielding function of infrared windows against electromagnetic waves, by combining the two characteristics of high transmission and conductivity in infrared wavelengths. Indium-hydroxide-doped (In2O3:H) thin films were prepared by atomic layer deposition method, which can achieve high IR transmission by reducing the carrier concentration on the basis of ensuring the electrical properties. On this basis, the effect of the post-deposition annealing process on the microstructure evolution and optoelectronic properties of In2O3:H thin films was investigated in this paper. It is demonstrated that the carrier mobility after annealing is up to 90 cm2/(V·s), and the transmittance at the 4 μm is about 70%, meanwhile, the carrier concentration after annealing in air atmosphere is reduced to 1019 cm−3, with a transmission rate of up to 83% at 4 μm. The simulations visualize the shielding performance of the annealed In2O3:H thin film against radar electromagnetic waves. It provides a guideline for fabricating lightweight, thin, and multi-functional shielding infrared transparent materials in the key fields of spacecraft and high precision electronics. Background: Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have been shown to accumulate in bone and are gaining interest in connective tissue research. Aims: To investigate the intrarater reliability, two-timepoint agreement and correlations within and between two commercially available skin autofluorescence (SAF) AGE devices. Methods: Healthy volunteers were enrolled in a prospective study at a single academic institution. Each participant underwent SAF analysis by two different, commercially available devices on two occasions, 14 days apart. Upon enrollment, a general survey about the participant's lifestyle and health status was completed and followed up on for any changes at timepoint two. Results: In total, 40 participants (F:M ratio 5:3) with an average age of 39.0 ± 12.5 years were analyzed. For the AGE reader (skin) and AGE sensor (fingertip), both intrarater reliability and two-timepoint agreement were excellent with an interclass correlation coefficient (ICC) > 0.90 and a strong correlation within both machines. However, there was no correlation between both machines for either timepoint. In total, 4 participants were identified as outliers above the +2SD. Additionally, 5 participants with dark-colored skin could not be measured with the AGE reader at timepoint one and 4 at timepoint two. In contrast, all participants were able to undergo SAF analysis with the AGE sensor, irrespective of their skin type. Conclusions: Both machines showed excellent intrarater reliability and two-timepoint agreement, but the skin AGE reader might have limited applicability in individuals with dark-colored skin. Learning discriminative features for facial expression recognition (FER) in the wild is a challenging task due to the significant intra-class variations, inter-class similarities, and extreme class imbalances. In order to solve these issues, a contrastive-learning-based extra-contrast affinity network (ECAN) method is proposed. The ECAN consists of a feature processing network and two proposed loss functions, namely extra negative supervised contrastive loss (ENSC loss) and multi-view affinity loss (MVA loss). The feature processing network provides current and historical deep features to satisfy the necessary conditions for these loss functions. Specifically, the ENSC loss function simultaneously considers many positive samples and extra negative samples from other minibatches to maximize intra-class similarity and the inter-class separation of deep features, while also automatically turning the attention of the model to majority and minority classes to alleviate the class imbalance issue. The MVA loss function improves upon the center loss function by leveraging additional deep feature groups from other minibatches to dynamically learn more accurate class centers and further enhance the intra-class compactness of deep features. The numerical results obtained using two public wild FER datasets (RAFDB and FER2013) indicate that the proposed method outperforms most state-of-the-art models in FER. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The term sinecatechins designates an extract containing a high percentage of catechins obtained from green tea, which is commercially registered as Veregen or Polyphenon E (PE) and may be considered for treatment of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) and actinic keratosis (AK). As shown here, treatment of four cSCC cell lines with 200 µg/mL of PE resulted in strong, dose-dependent decrease in cell proliferation (20–30%) as well as strongly decreased cell viability (4–21% of controls, 48 h). Effects correlated with loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, whereas early apoptosis was less pronounced. At the protein level, some activation of caspase-3 and enhanced expression of the CDK inhibitor p21 were found. Loss of MMP and induced cell death were, however, largely independent of caspases and of the proapoptotic Bcl-2 proteins Bax and Bak, suggesting that sinecatechins induce also non-apoptotic, alternative cell death pathways, in addition to apoptosis. Reactive oxygen species (ROS) were downregulated in response to PE at 4 h, followed by an increase at 24 h. The contributory role of initially reduced ROS was supported by the antioxidant N-acetyl cysteine, which in combination with PE further enhanced the negative effects on cell viability. Thus, sinecatechins inhibited cell proliferation and viability of cSCC cells, which could suggest the use of PE for AK treatment. The mechanisms appear as linked to an imbalance of ROS levels. High carbon dioxide concentrations can effectively control most storage pests. To estimate the toxicity effect of high concentrations of CO2, four different concentrations of CO2 (25% CO2, 50% CO2, 75% CO2, and 95% CO2) were used to treat Tribolium castaneum, and the biochemical (carbohydrate content and gene expression level) and physiological (mortality, pupation, eclosion rate, and weight) features of insects submitted to different treatments with CO2 were evaluated. The T. castaneum mortality rate was 50% in approximately 2 days when exposed to a treatment with 95% CO2. When the CO2 concentration exceeded 75%, the pupation rate and eclosion rate of T. castaneum seriously declined. Higher than 25% CO2 concentrations resulted in a lower weight and shrunken body size of T. castaneum. It was further found that different CO2 concentration treatments all influenced the levels of the three carbohydrate contents in T. castaneum. In addition, according to the detection of trehalose metabolism pathway-related genes, T. castaneum mainly responds to stress factors via high expression of TPS, TRE1-2, and TRE1-3. Our results enrich the evaluation of the toxicity effect of CO2 treatment on grain storage pests, providing a basis for further improving the method of regulating grain storage to control insect pests. Featured Application: The study of the material removal mechanisms in ultrasonic abrasive polishing provides technical support for the surface modification of metal-based additive manufactured components which have poor surface quality. In addition, the technology can be further applied to smoothing various complex shapes and the internal features of both metal and non-metal parts, due to the use of loose abrasive particles and the possibility of uniform material removal process. Powder-based layered Additive Manufacturing (AM) techniques lead to high surface roughness, due to the balling and partial melting of powders, which cannot satisfy the requirements of design and practical use. Consequently, until there is a significant step-change in the resolution of AM technology, finishing processes will be a necessary step in the additive manufacturing process. In this work, ultrasonic abrasive polishing experiments are conducted with the aim of improving the surface quality of additive manufactured components. The roles of cavitation bubbles and abrasive particles in material removal are discussed. The impact action of abrasive particles is simulated using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method. The effects of ultrasonic output power and the concentration of abrasive suspension on machining characteristics are also examined. It is found that the cavitation bubble collapse in ultrasonic polishing can remove the partially melted structures efficiently, and further roughness improvement could be obtained using the micro-cut and impact of abrasive particles in the slurry. Cemented paste backfill is critical for the development of green mines, the safe exploitation of mineral resources deep underground, and the efficient disposal of solid wastes produced by mining. In this paper, the mechanism underpinning how the pumping agent works was studied. The number, area, and fractal dimension of pores in the microstructure of fresh paste were quantitatively analyzed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), image processing, and fractal theory, and the response of flocs was investigated. The results show that floc networks disintegrated and the liquid network became the dominant structure under the action of the pumping agent, which enhanced the lubrication and promotion of multi-scale particles. In addition, the force chains became fragile and scattered, diminishing the yield stress of the paste. The pores had a more homogenized dimension and the porosity was 15.52% higher. The increase in the fractal dimension of the pores indicated that there was a higher self-similarity, in terms of microstructure, with a strengthened liquid network. The migration of floc structures contributed to the enhancement of the fluidity and rheology of the paste. This study provides insights into the effects of floc and liquid networks on the performance of paste, and it is of engineering significance in terms of realizing safe and efficient CPB operations. A conformal metamaterial absorber with simultaneous optical transparency and broadband absorption is proposed in this paper. The absorptance above 90% over a wide frequency range of 5.3–15 GHz can be achieved through topology optimization combined with a genetic algorithm (GA). The broadband absorption can be kept at incident angles within 45° and 70° for TE mode and TM mode, respectively. In the meantime, by employing transparent substrates, including polyvinyl chloride (PVC) and polyethylene terephthalate (PET), good optical transmittance and flexibility can be obtained simultaneously. The experimental results agree well with the numerical simulations, which further validates the reliability of our design and theoretical analysis. With its visible-wavelength transparency, flexibility, broadband absorption, low profile, excellent angle stability and polarization insensitivity, the proposed absorber is highly favored for practical applications in microwave engineering, such as electromagnetic interference and stealth technology. Pluripotent stem cells (PSCs) have been successfully developed in many species. However, the establishment of bovine-induced pluripotent stem cells (biPSCs) has been challenging. Here we report the generation of biPSCs from bovine mesenchymal stem cells (bMSCs) by overexpression of lysine-specific demethylase 4A (KDM4A) and the other reprogramming factors OCT4, SOX2, KLF4, cMYC, LIN28, and NANOG (KdOSKMLN). These biPSCs exhibited silenced transgene expression at passage 10, and had prolonged self-renewal capacity for over 70 passages. The biPSCs have flat, primed-like PSC colony morphology in combined media of knockout serum replacement (KSR) and mTeSR, but switched to dome-shaped, naïve-like PSC colony morphology in mTeSR medium and 2i/LIF with single cell colonization capacity. These cells have comparable proliferation rate to the reported primed- or naïve-state human PSCs, with three-germ layer differentiation capacity and normal karyotype. Transcriptome analysis revealed a high similarity of biPSCs to reported bovine embryonic stem cells (ESCs) and embryos. The naïve-like biPSCs can be incorporated into mouse embryos, with the extended capacity of integration into extra-embryonic tissues. Finally, at least 24.5% cloning efficiency could be obtained in nuclear transfer (NT) experiment using late passage biPSCs as nuclear donors. Efficient drugs are needed for countering the worldwide high incidence of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) and actinic keratosis. Indirubin derivatives represent promising candidates, but their effects in cSCC cells have not been reported before. Here, we investigated the efficacy of three indirubin derivatives (DKP-071, -073 and -184) in four cSCC cell lines. High efficacy was seen in SCL-I, SCL-II, SCC-12 and SCC-13, resulting in up to 80% loss of cell proliferation, 60% loss of cell viability and 30% induced apoptosis (10 µM). Apoptosis was further enhanced in combinations with TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL). Induction of reactive oxygen species (ROS) appeared as critical for these effects. Thus, antioxidative pretreatment completely abolished apoptosis as well as restored cell proliferation and viability. Concerning the pathways, complete activation of caspases cascades (caspases-3, -4, -6, -7, -8 and -9), loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, activation of proapoptotic PKCδ (protein kinase C delta), inhibition of STAT3 (signal transducer and activator of transcription 3), downregulation of antiapoptotic XIAP (X-linked inhibitor of apoptosis protein) and survivin as well as upregulation of the proapoptotic Bcl-2 protein Puma and the cell cycle inhibitor p21 were obtained. Importantly, all activation steps were prevented by antioxidants, thus proving ROS as a master regulator of indirubins' antitumor effects. Incidence of cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) and actinic keratosis has increased worldwide, and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs as celecoxib are considered for treatment. We show here strong anti-proliferative effects of celecoxib in four cSCC cell lines, while apoptosis and cell viability largely remained unaffected. Impeded apoptosis was overcome in combinations with agonistic CD95 antibody or TNF-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL), resulting in up to 60% apoptosis and almost complete loss of cell viability. Proapoptotic caspase cascades were activated, and apoptosis was suppressed by caspase inhibition. TRAIL receptor (DR5) and proapoptotic Bcl-2 proteins (Puma and Bad) were upregulated, while anti-apoptotic factors (survivin, XIAP, cFLIP, Mcl-1, and Bcl-w) were downregulated. Strongly elevated levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS) turned out as particularly characteristic for celecoxib, appearing already after 2 h. ROS production alone was not sufficient for apoptosis induction but may play a critical role in sensitizing cancer cells for apoptosis and therapy. Thus, the full therapeutic potential of celecoxib may be better used in combinations with death ligands. Furthermore, the immune response against cSCC/AK may be improved by celecoxib, and combinations with checkpoint inhibitors, recently approved for the treatment of cSCC, may be considered. Thermal damage is one of the principle modes of wagon railway wheels. A new bainitic railway wheel steel with high thermal damage resistance and good combination of strength, plasticity, and toughness was developed. Microstructure and mechanical properties of the new steels in a tempered condition at different temperatures were examined. Microstructures were observed using scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope. Mechanical properties were evaluated by tensile, hardness, and Charpy impact tests with a simultaneous comparison to pearlitic railway wheel steel. The characteristic of retain austenite and V(C,N) were measured through X-ray diffractometry and energy disperse spectroscopy. The results indicate that this new bainitic wheel steel presents a submicron-sized carbide-free bainite morphology and preferable integrated mechanical properties when tempered at 280–360 °C. Precipitation strengthening plays an important role for the high strength, since a two-time-strengthening mechanism of the yield strength led by precipitation has been found at 280–360 and 480–560 °C, respectively. Compared with a pearlitic railway wheel steel, bainitic wheel steel tempered at 320 °C has a 10% higher yield strength, five times higher impact toughness, and much better thermal damage resistance, which is a promising railway wheel material for higher speed or heavier axle-load service conditions. Surface exciton polaritons (SEPs) are one of the three major elementary excitations: Phonons, plasmons and excitons. They propagate along the interface of the crystal and dielectric medium. Surface exciton polaritons hold a significant position in the aspect of novel sensor and optical devices. In this article, we have realized a sharp Fano resonance (FR) by coupling the planar waveguide mode (WGM) and SEP mode with Cytop (perfluoro (1-butenyl vinyl ether)) and J-aggregate cyanine dye. After analyzing the coupling mechanism and the localized field enhancement, we then applied our structure to the imaging biosensor. It was shown that the maximum imaging sensitivity of this sensor could be as high as 5858 RIU−1, which is more than three times as much as classical FR based on metal. A biosensor with ultra-high sensitivity, simple manufacturing technique and lower cost with J-aggregate cyanine dye provides us with the most appropriate substitute for the surface plasmon resonance sensors with the noble metals and paves the way for applications in new sensing technology and biological studies. Transparent conducting oxides (TCOs) have appeared in the past few years as potential plasmonic materials for the development of optical devices in the near infrared regime (NIR). However, the performance of biosensors with TCOs has been limited in sensitivity and figure of merit (FOM). To improve the performance of the biosensors with TCOs, a biosensor based on long-range surface plasmon with Ga-doped zinc oxide (GZO) is proposed. It is shown that a larger FOM with a 2~7 times enhancement compared to the traditional surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) sensor and higher detection accuracy (DA) can be realized in our proposed sensor compared with the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor with GZO. Therefore, this sensor can be used to detect biological activity or chemical reactions in the near infrared region.

Graphene terahertz (THz) surface plasmons provide hope for developing functional devices in the THz frequency. By coupling graphene surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) and a planar waveguide (PWG) mode, Fano resonances are demonstrated to realize an ultrasensitive terahertz biosensor. By analyzing the dispersion relation of graphene SPPs and PWG, the tunable Fano resonances in the terahertz frequency are discussed. It is found that the asymmetric lineshape of Fano resonances can be manipulated by changing the Fermi level of graphene, and the influence of the thickness of coupling layer and air layer in sandwich structure on the Fano resonances is also discussed in detail. We then apply the proposed Fano resonance to realize the ultrasensitive terahertz biosensors, it is shown that the highest sensitivities of 3260 RIU-1 are realized. Our result is two orders of a conventional surface plasmon resonance sensor. Furthermore, we find that when sensing medium is in the vicinity of water in THz, the sensitivity increases with increasing refractive index of the sensing medium.
